Benni McCarthy robbed at gunpoint

Former Bafana Bafana striker Benni McCarthy has reportedly been robbed at gunpoint shortly after arriving back in SA.

Johannesburg - Media reports say that former Bafana Bafana striker Benni McCarthy was robbed at gunpoint in Johannesburg on Tuesday afternoon.

McCarthy had arrived in the country earlier on Tuesday and then made his way to a hair salon, ahead of his stint as a soccer analyst on a TV broadcast on Tuesday evening.

Reports say that soon after McCarthy arrived at the salon at around 1pm, three armed men walked in, drew their firearms and demanded McCarthy’s personal belongings, before driving off.

None of the other patrons in the salon were robbed.

Turmoil at Newcastle

John Carver offered to fall on his sword during a meeting with Newcastle managing director Lee Charnley after an amazing 48 hours at St James’ Park.

|||

John Carver offered to fall on his sword during a meeting with Newcastle managing director Lee Charnley after an amazing 48 hours at St James’ Park.

Sportsmail can today reveal the full disturbing picture of a club in turmoil following a series of meetings between players, management and executives since the shameful 3-0 loss at Leicester on Saturday.

In an attempt to save Newcastle from relegation, Carver told owner Mike Ashley he would stand aside if the club could find a replacement.Incredibly, Newcastle approached Derby manager Steve McClaren to take the last three games of the season, in a desperate attempt to find the points they need to stay in the Barclays Premier League.

McClaren turned down the chance to move to the North East and appears determined to lead another Derby assault on promotion from the Championship next season.

The failure to recruit McClaren, who has failed to get Derby into the play-offs this campaign, forced Newcastle to release a statement backing Carver. But the current boss’s power has been eroded over the past few weeks by the betrayal of senior players.

Yesterday, the squad attended the club’s Darsley Park training centre for a meeting on their own as they look for the win that could keep Newcastle in the top flight.

Coaching staff were excluded from the summit, which was attended by first-team players ahead of a warm-down session and massages for those who played on Saturday.

This is not the first time the players have held a meeting during Newcastle’s depressing run, but the slump has continued. A Newcastle source told Sportsmail: ‘It’s just meetings about meetings.’

Carver has been attempting to develop a siege mentality at the club following a run of results that has left Newcastle two points above the relegation zone.

At half-time at Leicester, it has emerged that the players were deliberately provoked by coaching staff in an attempt to get a reaction after the break.

By then they were 2-0 down following a first-minute goal by Leonardo Ulloa and a 17th-minute effort by Leicester defender Wes Morgan.

Amid fiery exchanges, the players were told they were so bad they would be practising kick-offs in training this week because they had surrendered possession so easily. Just three minutes after the restart, they conceded a third goal when Ulloa scored again, this time from the penalty spot.

Carver fears the worst after his side’s run of league defeats was extended to eight. The manager wanted a response from his players in the dressing room, but he fears they lack the necessary leadership and character going into the final three games.

There have been a number of attempts by the Newcastle boss to provoke the players on the training field, but there is now an air of resignation among the squad. Managing director Charnley, who has been hugely supportive of Carver since he replaced Alan Pardew in January, also met with the coaching staff.

And it has emerged that an administrative decision means young central defender Jamaal Lascelles, who has been on loan at Nottingham Forest for the season, will not be available to face West Bromwich Albion this Saturday.

Newcastle agreed to let Lascelles’ contract at the City Ground run until the end of May in case Forest made the Championship play-offs. In the event, Dougie Freedman’s side finished 19 points behind sixth-placed Ipswich. On top of that, Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, the 25-year-old defender signed from Montpellier in 2013, is on loan at Roma for the season.

Newcastle will be without Mike Williamson, sent off in disgrace at Leicester, for the clash with Tony Pulis’s side at St James’ Park.

Carver could play Ryan Taylor alongside Fabricio Coloccini at centre half.

Vernon Anita is expected to play at right back against West Brom, with Jonas Gutierrez at left back if Newcastle survive the week without any more injuries.

Although Newcastle’s future hinges on the next three games, Ashley was warned about the potential problems at the club by his then manager Pardew last summer.

During Newcastle’s tour to New Zealand, Pardew expressed reservations about the squad and warned the executive they would face a relegation battle.

Pardew, now in charge at Crystal Palace, has been proved right after a run of defeats that began when Newcastle lost 1-0 at home to Manchester United on March 4.

Newcastle have not won a game since the 1-0 win over Aston Villa at St James’ Park on February 28 and they now face a massive battle for survival.

After Saturday’s clash with West Bromwich, the team travel to relegation-threatened Queens Park Rangers before their final game of the season, at home to West Ham on May 24.

There is an outside chance striker Papiss Cisse, who is recovering from a knee injury, could return for the final two games, but he remains upset about Newcastle’s attempts to sell him in January.

Cisse, who has scored 11 times for Newcastle this season, has not played since Newcastle’s home defeat by Manchester United, after which he was hit with a seven-match ban for spitting at defender Jonny Evans.– Daily Mail

Messi is unstoppable, says Pep

Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola says there is no way of stopping Barcelona's Lionel Messi in his present form.

|||

Barcelona - Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola says there is no way of stopping Barcelona's Lionel Messi in his present form ahead of their Champions League semi-final clash on Wednesday.

In his former role as Barca boss, Guardiola frequently described Messi as the best player in the world.

He visited the Nou Camp as a spectator to watch his former club take apart Manchester City in the last 16 and was pictured in the stands shaking his head in disbelief as Messi wove his magic.

He now has the opportunity to pitch his Bayern side against the club where he is still idolised for what he achieved as both a player and coach.

If he is to emerge a winner at the Nou Camp, he says his side will have to find other ways to beat Barca than trying to cut out the threat of Messi.

“You don't stop Messi, in this form, no,” Guardiola told a news conference in Barcelona on Tuesday.

“In the last few months he has been unstoppable. He is too good. Maybe you can try different tactics like getting close to him, making it difficult for him to get the ball, put three players on him but against talent of this size then you cannot defend against it. We will have to look at other ways to win the game.”

The Argentine has scored 51 goals in all competitions this season and is part of a formidable attacking trident with Luis Suarez and Neymar. They have notched up 108 goals between them.

Guardiola also feels it would be futile to try and beat Barcelona at their own possession-based game.

“No team has beaten Barcelona for possession. It has always been like that,” said the Bayern coach.

“We will do what I think is necessary though and we will see who is in (the final in) Berlin next week.

“It is difficult to find weaknesses in this Barca team which has so much talent but we will try and make the most of our virtues. Barca have talent and they know how to play together.”

While Guardiola admits it is likely to be an emotional occasion, he is clear in his mind about what he needs to do.

“It is great to be here and it is impossible not to think of the memories. I knew that if I trained other big teams I would come here with them but I am not here for people to pay homage but to take Bayern to the final,” he said.

Pirates, Downs batttle for second spot

Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates will battle it out to claim the runner’s up spot in the Premiership.

|||

Johannesburg – With entry into next season’s Caf champions league on the line for finishing in second place in the Premiership, Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates will battle it out to claim the runner’s up spot in the league.

The Brazilians on 51 points in second, are three ahead of the third-placed Buccaneers with just the Wednesday and Saturday fixtures left to wrap up league proceedings for this season.

Sundowns, in particular, made up their game in hand they had over Pirates with a win against Platinum Stars away from home on Sunday to wrestle the advantage.

“It was very important for us to get the three points against Platinum Stars away from home. We normally win there,” said coach Pitso Mosimane heading into Wednesday’s clash with SuperSport United at Lucas Moripe Stadium.

The title ambitions of Sundowns were effectively ended with a crushing 5-0 defeat to Bloemfontein Celtic in the middle of April.

That result would have come as a blow for the defending champions, and Mosimane said his side had not fully recovered from that humbling result just yet.

“We are not yet back, the confidence is not yet strong. It’s about grinding things out now and getting back second position.”

Ultimately, two wins in their final two fixtures would secure the second place finish for Sundowns and would be the only goal left in the league for Mosimane’s side.

“We played very well against Vasco and we won. We played very well against the champions and we lost. Against Stars we didn’t play very well and we won.

“We will consolidate again next season. We are trying to wrap up things.”

Pirates, meanwhile, face Maritzburg United away at Harry Gwala Stadium fresh off their 5-2 aggregate win over Mounana FC in their CAF Confederations Cup match on the weekend.

Champions Chiefs host Wits at FNB Stadium. Wits at fourth place on the log with 46 points could slip ahead of Pirates if results go their way.

In other games on the evening, University of Pretoria host bottom of the table AmaZulu at Tuks stadium. Ajax Cape Town host relegation-threatened Moroka Swallows at Athlone Stadium, Platinum Stars take on Polokwane City at Royal Bafokeng Stadium, Bloem Celtic are at home against Free State Stars at Free State Stadium and Black Aces welcome Chippa United at Mbombela Stadium. – ANA

Jose is better than Arsene, Pep

Chelsea’s Cesc Fabregas rates manager Jose Mourinho above his previous managers, Arsene Wenger and Pep Guardiola.

|||

Cesc Fabregas has heralded a new era of success for a Chelsea team he believes can be among Europe’s finest.

After clinching his first Barclays Premier League title, Fabregas predicted a glorious future for the club with Jose Mourinho at the helm and Eden Hazard on the wing.

Hazard, he says, is capable of reaching the heights of Lionel Messi and rates manager Mourinho above Arsene Wenger and Pep Guardiola.

‘He knows how to manage a team and how to get the best from you,’ said Fabregas. ‘That’s what you want from a manager, 100 per cent. He can motivate a player every three days — not easy when you play 60 games a season, trust me.

‘Everyone thinks that we have a big squad, but we don’t. We’ve used 22 players, some of them from the under-21s, so it’s not easy and he actually is doing a fantastic job.

‘He just loves winning. I’m not saying other managers I’ve played under don’t, but he has some edge that goes above anyone else I have ever been with.

‘The mentality shows in every single training session or game. I now understand why he has won what he has won in his career.’

It was Mourinho who convinced the former Arsenal captain to choose Stamford Bridge when he left Barcelona last summer, promising him a role as his creator-in-chief. Fabregas responded by striking an instant understanding with Diego Costa and Eden Hazard and finished the season with a stream of assists.

‘He makes me feel important in the team,’ said Fabregas. ‘He allows me to play the way I feel. I feel like that he trusts me. He makes me feel things I didn’t feel for a while: to feel important, to play every game, sometimes he allows me to give speeches.

‘Every game before the game, one player gives a speech, and he allows me to feel like a leader, to feel important to the team. It is always good for a player to feel he has the confidence of the manager.’

Before Sunday’s title clincher against Crystal Palace, Mourinho asked Fabregas to deliver the pre-match speech in the dressing room.

‘It was a special one,’ smiled the Spain midfielder, 28. ‘I cannot say what I said, but it worked, so I’m happy.’

If Petr Cech and Didier Drogba leave in the summer, Mourinho will be searching for a new vice-captain, with Fabregas sure to be among the main candidates along with Gary Cahill and Branislav Ivanovic.

‘I am hopeful this will be the start of a new era,’ said Fabregas. ‘We have players who have been here a long time but I hope the new players will feel the winning mentality and go on for a long time.

‘I’ve said since the start of the season that this is a very talented young team. That is one of reason I signed. Potentially, this team can be one of the best in Europe.’

While Mourinho has emphasised that this season has been a great team effort, all at Chelsea accept that Hazard, the PFA Player of the Year, adds the stardust — and Fabregas rates him as highly as his former Barcelona team-mates.

‘He can be one of those, for sure,’ said Fabregas. ‘He can be up there. He’s had a fantastic season, I just want for him to do it again next year and to be even better. He is the main guy. In my mind, he is the guy that makes this team better than it is.

‘Next year he has to prove himself in the Champions League as well because he is capable of that, and I am sure he will give many big nights of glory to this club.’ – Daily Mail

Young set for new United deal

Ashley Young will sign a three-year contract to stay at Manchester United this summer.

|||

Ashley Young will sign a three-year contract to stay at Manchester United this summer.

The winger has been one of United’s few successes under Louis van Gaal and he will commit to the club at the end of the season.

Young’s future was in doubt when Van Gaal arrived last summer, but he has won over the Dutch coach with his versatility.

He earns £120,000 a week and the new contract will be on similar terms.

Young turns 30 in July and, as he prepares to complete four seasons at the club, is planning to see out his career at United.

Young also has ambitions to reclaim his England place.

Roy Hodgson’s men travel to Dublin to play the Republic of Ireland on June 7, before heading to Slovenia for a Euro 2016 qualifier.

Young has not played for England since the clash with Ukraine in September 2013. – Daily Mail

I’m not retiring soon - Terry

Chelsea captain John Terry has warned his Premier League rivals: ‘I am far from finished.’

|||

Chelsea captain John Terry has warned his Premier League rivals: ‘I am far from finished.’

Terry has played every minute of his side’s title-winning season so far, and has set his sights on completing the remaining three matches.

Former Chelsea manager Rafa Benitez famously said Terry, who was 32 at the time, could no longer play two games in a week.

And the 34-year-old, who signed a new 12-month deal earlier this year, is adamant he still has plenty of football ahead of him.

‘When people write you off it does spur you on. It’s not nice to read when you’ve been at the top for so long,’ said the former England captain.

‘There will come a point when enough’s enough but I’ll know when that is and I’ll be the first to say, “Listen, I can’t do this no more”.’

Of Benitez, he added: ‘I don’t need to stand here and prove him wrong. My football’s done that for my whole career.’

Meanwhile, Terry is hopeful that 37-year-old striker Didier Drogba, who has yet to extend his deal beyond the end of this season, stays at Stamford Bridge. Terry said: ‘Let’s hope he’s in the camp next season. He’s got a massive part to play on and off the field.’ – Daily Mail

Pepe relishing battle with Tevez

Real Madrid defender Pepe said he was relishing the prospect of a battle against Juventus forward Carlos Tevez.

|||

Turin - Real Madrid defender Pepe said he was relishing the prospect of a battle against Juventus forward Carlos Tevez when the sides meet in the Champions League semi-final.

Tevez has been revitalised since his move to Juventus two years ago and the battle between the feisty Argentine and the notoriously volatile Portugal defender promises to be one of the highlights of the first leg.

“Tevez is a top quality player, who likes to fight for the ball and battles a lot on pitch, and I enjoy it when it's like that,” Pepe told reporters on Monday.

Vilified for his red card against Germany at the World Cup, Pepe has yet to be sent off this season, which critics say is a sign that the 32-year-old has mellowed and matured under the leadership of coach Carlo Ancelotti.

“It's a privilege to learn from Carlo Ancelotti every day. He knows exactly what the players need,” said Pepe who smiled his way through the press conference.

“He teaches you a lot both as a player and as a person.”

Ancelotti promised that his team would come to attack and said he had no regrets about his unhappy two year spell at Juventus.

“The important thing is try to play as well as possible, using and showing the quality we have,” he said.

“This team can show our quality by attacking, we will prepare to play on the attack in this game...but we have to defend better than we have recently.

“It's a good moment for us. We had a few problems in January and February, when we were a bit down, but the team is confident and we have replaced the injured players really well,” he added.

“I coached here for two years and got on very well with part of the fans and the club. I learned a lot but I had a problem with some fans, but what can I say? The years I spent here have helped me to improve as a coach.”

He played down the absence of forward Karim Benzema who has not recovered sufficiently from a knee injury.

“The difficulty is when you don't have good movement, with and without the ball.... the movement of the team, rhythm of the team, that is what makes the difference.” – Reuters

Chelsea set for summer spending spree

Jose Mourinho will propose Roman Abramovich bankrolls another summer transfer spree to turn Chelsea into Europe’s top dogs.

|||

Jose Mourinho will propose Roman Abramovich bankrolls another summer transfer spree to turn Chelsea into Europe’s top dogs once more.

The Blues manager will recommend the newly-crowned Barclays Premier League champions strengthen significantly ahead of the next campaign when he files his end-of-season report this month.

Despite their title success, Mourinho knows he must improve on the club’s Champions League showing this season after they were knocked out by Paris Saint-Germain in the second round.

And Sportsmail understands Mourinho’s dossier will identify a new goalkeeper, centre back, left back, attacking midfielder and striker as the areas that need addressing.

Technical director Michael Emenalo and influential director Marina Granovskaia have already held meetings with intermediaries, as the club prepare for another busy summer.

Petr Cech’s imminent exit, potentially to Arsenal, means the club will look to sign a new second-choice goalkeeper, with Queens Park Rangers’ Robert Green, 35, an option.

Scouts are also identifying replacements for left back Filipe Luis, who is expected to leave after just one season having failed to dislodge Cesar Azpilicueta. Atletico Madrid are interested in re-signing the defender.

Chelsea will also aim to sign a long-term successor for John Terry with Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane their top target.

Mourinho will consider offers for creative midfielder Oscar, meaning the Blues will be in the market for a replacement, possibly Liverpool’s Raheem Sterling, whose future is unclear. Atletico’s attacking midfielder Antoine Griezmann and Shakhtar Donetsk’s Douglas Costa have also earned rave reviews from Chelsea scouts.

The club are identifying centre-forward targets to replace Didier Drogba, who is set to leave.

In addition, a new central midfielder is on the club’s radar but Mourinho is likely to promote academy star Ruben Loftus-Cheek into the senior side to fill the gap.

Chelsea will also look to sell winger Mohamed Salah, who is interesting Tottenham, to offset their summer spending. – Daily Mail

Sanchez exceeding Wenger’s expectations

Alexis Sanchez became the first Arsenal player since Thierry Henry to score over 20 goals in his first season.

|||

London - Alexis Sanchez became the first Arsenal player since Thierry Henry to score over 20 goals in his first season and manager Arsene Wenger said the Chilean has exceeded all his expectations.

The effervescent 26-year-old scored a brace in Arsenal's 3-1 Premier League victory against Hull City on Monday to take his tally to 24 goals in all competitions in his debut campaign.

Sanchez has set the Premier League alight since his 35 million pound ($54.78 million) arrival from Barcelona in the close season though his impressive goal tally tells only part of the story of his impact at the Emirates Stadium.

The attacking midfielder has also contributed 11 assists and plays with an unrivalled energy and enthusiasm to inspire an Arsenal team who have claimed 28 points from a possible 30 to all but secure Champions league qualification for an 18th successive season.

His 24 goals, including 16 in the Premier League, have come in all manners from unstoppable long-range thunderbolts to deft finishes at the end of mazy runs.

Arsenal have boasted some of Europe's most gifted attacking midfielders during Wenger's tenure but few combined that with the tenacity and competitiveness of Sanchez who has taken to the physically demanding Premier League like a duck to water.

Earlier this season Arsenal great Henry, who scored 175 Premier League goals for the club, said Sanchez had been Wenger's “best signing in the last six years”.

Henry joined the club from Italian giants Juventus in 1999 and scored 26 goals in all competitions in his first season in Arsenal colours and surpassed the 20 goal mark in seven successive seasons.

Wenger, who holds Sanchez in similarly high esteem, has regularly purred over the consistently scintillating performances of his marquee player.

“Yes (he has exceeded all my expectations) because I expected him to be more of a provider than a goalscorer,” Wenger told Sky Sports.

“And especially because I play him on the flank where you have less chances. But he has the timing and the quality of his runs are very good and he gets in good positions to finish.”

Should Arsenal beat Manchester City to finish second in the Premier League and retain the FA Cup against Aston Villa later this month the talismanic Sanchez is likely to be pivotal. – Reuters

Sanchez and Ramsey lift Arsenal

Arsenal have triumphed over relegation-threatened Hull City in their Premier League encounter.

|||

London - Arsenal all but sealed Champions League qualification for an 18th successive season after they eased past relegation-threatened Hull City 3-1 in the Premier League on Monday.

Alexis Sanchez's deflected free-kick wrong-footed stranded keeper Steve Harper to hand Arsenal a 28th-minute opener before Aaron Ramsey doubled the advantage four minutes later when his shot was diverted into the net via a Hull defender.

Sanchez rounded Harper to add his second in first half stoppage time and, though they improved after the break, Hull's solitary response came from Stephen Quinn's 56th minute header.

Arsenal, in third, have 70 points from 34 matches and trail second-placed Manchester City, who have played a game more, on goal difference.

Hull sit one point and place above the relegation zone and face the daunting prospect of games against Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United among their remaining three fixtures.

Maradona calls for end to ‘anarchy’ at Fifa

Diego Maradona launched a blistering attack on Fifa president Sepp Blatter, saying that world soccer's governing body had descended into anarchy under him.

|||

Dead Sea, Jordan - Argentina's World Cup winning captain Diego Maradona launched a blistering attack on Fifa president Sepp Blatter on Monday saying that world soccer's governing body had descended into anarchy with the 79-year-old Swiss in charge.

With the Fifa presidential election less than a month away, Maradona, one of the greatest players to ever grace the game and the inspiration behind Argentina's 1986 World Cup victory, said the time was long overdue for Blatter to go.

He said he would do all he could to help Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein win the election, even though the 39-year-old Jordanian royal hinted on Monday he might consider pulling out of the contest if he thought one of the other two challengers could win.

In a syndicated interview with Guillem Balague, the moderator at the Soccerex Asian Forum at the King Hussein convention centre, some 60 kilometres from the Jordanian capital Amman, Maradona pulled no punches and gave his backing to the Jordanian royal.

Asked why he replied: “If I didn't believe that he would be a good president, I wouldn't be here.

“As the football world knows, inside Fifa there is total anarchy, where there is only one man who decides everything.

“But he knows absolutely nothing. Therefore it is time for a change. And it is so because even his colleagues should actually advise him to leave.”

Maradona, 54, who was voted along with Pele the joint-best player of the 20th century by Fifa in 2000, said he believed that the continued presence of Blatter, who is seeking a fifth term as president, would continue to harm football.

“He has done a lot of damage to football since he has been there. It's time for him to step aside and let us, who are full of strength, renovate football.”

Maradona played in the World Cups of 1982, 1986, 1990 and 1994 and later coached Argentina to the World Cup quarter-finals of 2010.

He implied he was unhappy about way things were done at Fifa, particularly regarding the choice of Russia and Qatar for the 2018 and 2022 World Cup finals.

“First we didn't know where the World Cup was going to be held. Then we found out that after Brazil it was Russia and then Qatar.

“Without any doubt whatsoever Blatter is scared. Blatter is scared. He's scared of being left out of his share of the cake,” Maradona said.

“That is what really annoys someone like me, who has played in four World Cups. I was chasing the ball, Blatter is chasing champagne.”

Wenger’s goal - close gap on Chelsea

At this point of the season, Arsenal matches are often a desperate scramble to scrape into fourth place. But not this year.

|||

At this point of the season, Arsenal matches are often a desperate scramble to scrape into fourth place and prevent any diminishing of the club's stature. But not this year.

Arsène Wenger's side have been excellent in recent months and are aiming not for fourth, or even for third, but for second place in the Premier League. Beating Hull City tonight should give them a good chance of doing that.

If Arsenal do end in second - and retain the FA Cup - it will have been an excellent season, exceeding expectations. It will also prompt new questions this summer about where they can go next, about how close they are to a Chelsea side they have not been able to lay a finger on this season.

While Arsenal have been in better form than Chelsea over recent months, leading a league and winning a title are different. Wenger, though, hopes that his team will take their improvements into next season.

“Chelsea is a very strong side, I don't deny that,” the Arsenal manager said. “What will be interesting, let's get a new start and see where we stand next year. We feel we have made up some ground, - that will be the challenge of next season from the start; let's show we are there and capable to fight for it.”

The summer will be important at the Emirates as Wenger builds his team for next season, but any fans hoping for wholesale changes may be disappointed.

“We are not in the need of absolute change,” Wenger said. “We have a strong squad, we have some strong young players behind. It is difficult to say at the moment. We are not close to signing anybody. We have a very big squad, so we need to lose some players as well.”

Wenger is often predisposed to trusting his existing players rather than seeking to upgrade them, but he suggested in the winter that he felt differently. He says now that 2015's burst in form has prompted “massive changes” in how he assessed his squad, the implication being that players have proved him wrong and will now not need to be replaced.

Striker Olivier Giroud is certainly one of those who has exceeded expectations, but that did not stop Thierry Henry from saying on Sky Sports last week that he was not good enough. Wenger sprang to Giroud's defence, saying Henry himself was subject to early pre-judgement when he played for Arsenal.

“I think Henry is wrong,” Wenger said. “We all know the system of modern media. I know how it works, they push you to be controversial because they give you a lot of money. I heard the same thing being said about [Nicolas] Anelka, about Henry himself and about Robin van Persie. And they all became world-class players.” – The Independent

Fifa to discuss PFA’s Israel suspension call

Fifa's annual Congress will discuss a proposal from the Palestinian Football Association for the suspension of Israel.

|||

Zurich - Fifa's annual Congress will discuss a proposal from the Palestinian Football Association (PFA) for the suspension of Israel, according to the agenda published by soccer's governing body on Monday.

Palestine has complained that Israel has continued to hamper its football activities, saying Israel imposes restrictions on the movement of their athletes between the Gaza Strip and the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

The PFA has also cited curbs Israel places on the import into Palestinian territories of sports equipment and on visits by foreign teams and individuals.

Agenda 15 on the item for the May 29 Congress in Zurich read: “Proposal by the Palestinian Football Association for the suspension of the Israel Football Association.”

Two years ago, Fifa established a task force which included president Sepp Blatter, the Israeli and Palestinian soccer chiefs and the heads of the European and Asian soccer confederations to examine the Palestinian complaints and to try and resolve them.

Blatter said at the time that he was determined to resolve the impasse.

However, on Friday PFA president Jibril Rajoub told Reuters that nothing had improved and reiterated his claim that Israel was “were persecuting Palestine footballers, athletes and the movement of sporting equipment”.

Rajoub agreed to drop a similar resolution at last year's Congress in Sao Paulo but he said he would not back down this time.

It would need a three-quarter majority of Fifa's 209 members for Palestine's proposal to succeed.

Israel, whose federation is a member of UEFA, cites security concerns for restrictions it imposes in the West Bank, where the Palestinian Authority exercises limited self rule, and along the border with the Gaza Strip.

But it says it has eased travel for Palestinian athletes between the territories, which requires passage via Israel.

PSL survival fight hots up

The fight to stay in the Premiership for the three bottom teams will be the focus ahead of the next eight league fixtures.

|||

Johannesburg – With two games left in the season, the fight to stay in the Premiership for the three bottom teams will be the focus ahead of the next eight league fixtures.

Current favourites for the drop are AmaZulu at the foot of the standings with 24 points, and three behind 15th placed Moroka Swallows, and five behind Chippa United on 29 points.

The team who finishes last (16th) at the end of the season is automatically relegated with the National First Division (NFD) champions (Golden Arrows) promoted.

The two teams who finish 14th and 15th in the Premiership will then have to battle it out with the NFD’s second and third placed teams to decide which two teams will play in the top-tier South African league next season.

On Wednesday, AmaZulu travel to 11th-placed University of Pretoria at Tuks stadium in desperate search of a win.

AmaZulu coach Steve Barker said it was now up to his team to win at all costs.

“Yes of course there is still hope. There are still six points to play for. The onus is on us to win our next two games, we don’t have a choice,” said Barker.

AmaZulu went down 3-1 at home to SuperSport United at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday, after Swallows had beaten Maritzburg United 1-0 at Dobsonville Stadium on Friday to jump out of last place.

Barker said it would be a scrap among the bottom teams to avoid finishing in the unenviable bottom spot.

“We have to bounce back from Saturday’s defeat and make sure that Wednesday away from home we lift ourselves. So all we can do is fight for the six points remaining and if we get those six points we’ll see what happens.”

Swallows themselves will have a difficult assignment as they travel to the Mother City to take on Ajax Cape Town at Athlone Stadium.

Chippa, meanwhile, will also be away, as they come up against Black Aces at Mbombela Stadium. – ANA
