News sport : Grizzlies to sit Marc Gasol, Zach Randolph, Tony Allen, Mike Conley vs. Wizards

See? Told you going bowling would help out the Washington Wizards as they headed into a nationally televised Thursday night matchup with the Memphis Grizzlies.

[DraftKings: FREE entry to huge cash Fantasy Basketball Contest with first deposit]

Granted, we figured it would come in the form of increased camaraderie and team-wide positive vibes, but hey, I'm willing to bet Randy Wittman and company will take Dave Joerger's crew getting their Pop on, too:

Yep, that's right. As the San Antonio Spurs have done so many times before, the Grizzlies will hold their top guns out for a TNT broadcast, giving All-Star center Marc Gasol, star power forward Zach Randolph and top perimeter stopper Tony Allen the night off to rest, while giving point guard Mike Conley the night off to heal up his aching right ankle.

Conley, the unassuming leader of the Memphis offense and the tip of Joerger's spear on defense, has been dealing with multiple nagging injuries since the All-Star break, to the point where multiple smart Grizzlies watchers — like Kevin Lipe of the Memphis Flyer — thought it might behoove Joerger to find an opportunity to give the point guard a night off during Memphis' East Coast road trip. He's continued to trot Conley out there, though, which briefly looked like a disastrous decision during the third quarter of the Grizzlies' Wednesday meeting with the Boston Celtics:

At first, many feared that Conley had suffered a serious knee injury after planting awkwardly while dribbling against Celtics guard Avery Bradley, as the 27-year-old instantly hit the deck in evident pain and had to be carried off the court by teammates. Shortly thereafter, though, Conley trotted back out to the Memphis bench, with the Grizzlies public relations team announcing that he'd simply suffered a sprained right ankle and would try to return.

He did, coming back at the 9:05 mark of the fourth quarter and doing his level best to push the Grizzlies past the finish line, scoring eight of his team-high 20 points in the final frame after fighting with Memphis' medical personnel to get back into the fray, according to Ronald Tillery of the Memphis Commercial Appeal:

“We were back here arguing for about five minutes about whether I should go out or not,” Conley said in the visitor’s locker room after the game. “I said I might as well give it a try and see how it goes. If I can’t move then I can’t move and I’ll come out.” [...]

“That was tough, but we went back (in the locker room) and did some treatment, took some medicine, was able to dull the pain a little bit,” Conley said about his ability to keep playing.

Despite the wounded lead guard's efforts, though, Memphis came up just short, dropping a somewhat disappointing three-point decision to the Celtics that saw the starting lineup struggle once again, former Celtic Jeff Green take 13 shots to score 11 points — including a 2-for-6 mark in the final quarter, while Gasol went without a field-goal attempt in the fourth — and bumped-back-to-the-bench guard Allen (16 points, five rebounds, two steals, two assists, two blocks) continue to make his case for being restored to a more prominent role.

[Follow Dunks Don't Lie on Tumblr: The best slams from all of basketball]

After the loss, Memphis' seventh in its last 15 tries, the Grizzlies' stars apparently seemed a bit off, according to Tillery:

"What are we doing? I don’t know,” Griz forward Zach Randolph said afterward. “We’ve got to play and be smart. We’ve got to execute and be strong. This is (expletive).” [...]

“We’ve got to do a better job of imposing our will and making the right plays at the right time. It’s simple basketball,” Gasol said before cutting his interview short, citing frustration.

... which makes some sense, considering just how hard-travelin' a group of heroes they've been of late:

... and now, they'll get a night off to rest, recover and, perhaps, get back on track:

Maybe Conley, Gasol, Z-Bo and Allen they can head to the White House and bowl a few frames. It's already paying dividends for the Wizards, after all.

News sport : Fantasy Baseball Position Primer: Outfield

The outfield is where you'll find ... well, everything.

Whatever you need, it's available in the outfield. All hitting stats, all player traits. This roster spot is where the four and five-category fantasy commodities tend to reside. The top-two overall picks in an average Yahoo draft are a pair of outfielders — Mike Trout and Andrew McCutchen — and four additional OF-eligible players are typically selected among the overall top-ten.

[Yahoo Sports Fantasy Baseball: Sign up and join a league today!]

Simply put, fantasy is a numbers game, and the outfield is rich with numbers. If you adhere too strictly to position-scarcity draft principles in the opening rounds, you'll whiff on several of the game's most productive, bankable, multi-category assets.

Eighteen major league hitters posted at least 80 runs, 80 RBIs and 20 HRs last year, and nine were outfielders. (None were shortstops, none were catchers.) Thirteen players at this position delivered a combined homers-plus-steals total of 40 or more. Only five big leaguers topped 35 home runs, and four carry outfield eligibility, including MLB leader Nelson Cruz. Fifteen players stole 30-plus bags in 2014, and 11 were outfielders.

It's certainly true that breakout fantasy monsters emerge in the outfield each season from the mid and late rounds (or the free agent pool), as with Michael Brantley and Corey Dickerson in 2014. But it's also unquestionably true that the elite fantasy outfielders rank among the most predictable assets in our game — most of this year's upper-tier OFs were last year's upper-tier OFs.

Bottom line: If you deliberately avoid this position at the top of your draft, you're choosing to pass on fantasy's most useful and reliable stars. Does that sound like a winning approach?

If it does, um ... then I'd like to invite you to join a few highly incentivized leagues. Prepayment required, no exceptions. We can draft around your schedule, whenever it's convenient.

2012, OF3 — 71.0 R, 15.7 HR, 61.1 RBIs, 18.0 SB, .273 AVG

Note: We’re treating the outfield as three positions, with “OF1” representing the 20 highest-ranked players. The outfielders ranked 21-40 are OF2s, and 41-60 are OF3s.

News sport : Georgia assistant and family escape Wednesday night house fire

Nov 2, 2013; Jacksonville, FL, USA; A Georgia Bulldogs helmet sits on the sideline during the first half of the game against the Florida Gators at EverBank Field. (Rob Foldy-USA TODAY Sports) Instead of going to bed early like he normally does, Georgia assistant strength and conditioning coach Gus Felder decided to stay up to read and watch television on Wednesday night. That turned out to be a huge decision.

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Felder noticed a strange smell around 11 and discovered a small fire underneath the dryer in the laundry room on the second floor of the house he rents.

After getting his family – his wife and five children – out of the house, Felder located a fire extinguisher, but it didn’t work. He phoned the fire department as the fire intensified, consuming the laundry room. Once the fire was contained, the second floor, including the room shared by his three youngest children, “sustained major heat, smoke and water damage.”

Felder's children lost their clothes and toys, but no one was hurt.

“Everybody’s safe now,” said Felder, who doesn’t think he would have smelled the fire if he hadn’t stayed awake. “It’s just the grace of God the way it worked out.”

For now, the Felders moved in with fellow assistant strength coach John Thomas before trying to find “something a little more permanent.”

A local church has set up a gofundme campaign to held the family in their efforts to re-locate.

Despite the turmoil the fire has caused, Felder is thankful that everyone is OK.

“We’ve always had a little plan for emergencies and that worked out great,” Felder said. “My kids did great, my wife did a great job. So we made it, thank God.”

News sport : Big 12 will use head-to-head tiebreaker to declare 'One True Champion'

The Big 12’s maxim of “One True Champion” will actually be true in the 2015 football season.

Commissioner Bob Bowlsby said Thursday that the conference's athletic directors are in favor of getting rid of the co-champion policy and instead using head-to-head as the tiebreaker to indeed declare one true champion.

The Big 12’s “One True Champion” credo came under fire during the football season as Baylor and TCU jockeyed for position in the College Football Playoff. They both had one loss, but Baylor beat the Horned Frogs in their matchup. The conference declared the two teams co-champions and the Big 12 ultimately became the only Power Five conference to miss out on the inaugural College Football Playoff despite it being the only conference with two teams in the top six of the rankings.

Of course, there’s no guarantee that the Big 12 declaring Baylor the regular season champion over TCU would have changed the way the College Playoff Committee voted. Baylor finished fifth and TCU finished sixth in the final rankings.

However, declaring one champion will make it easier for the conference to petition for one team if playoff scenarios are close in future years.

Perez gives Ancelotti his backing

Real Madrid president expresses support for Carlo Ancelotti and his players and firmly denies the Italian coach is facing the sack

|||

Madrid - Real Madrid president Florentino Perez called a surprise news conference to express his support for Carlo Ancelotti and his players and firmly deny a report the Italian coach was facing the sack.

The world and European champions have lost their last two matches and are without a win in three and surrendered top spot in La Liga to arch rivals Barcelona last weekend after a 1-0 reverse at Athletic Bilbao.

They followed up with a 4-3 Champions League defeat at home to Schalke 04 on Tuesday, squeaking through to the quarter-finals 5-4 on aggregate, and were roundly whistled by angry fans at the Bernabeu.

Barca host Real for the La Liga 'Clasico' on March 22 and Spanish sports daily Marca reported on Thursday that a humbling loss at the Nou Camp would prompt Perez to sack Ancelotti, who has a contract until the end of next season.

“To use the fact that we are not on our best form at the moment to report information that is not true is unacceptable,” Perez told reporters.

“I want to state categorically that the club has full confidence in our coach and in our players,” he added.

“And I want to say, contrary to a report published today, that whatever happens in the coming days and weeks Carlo Ancelotti will remain the coach of Real Madrid.

“We have the best coach and the best players that Real Madrid could have.

“As president of Real Madrid, I appeal to our fans to support our coach and our players and ask that they feel proud of them for all they have given us and for all they will continue to give us.”

Perez also expressed support for Real's Wales winger Gareth Bale and goalkeeper Iker Casillas, who are struggling for form and have been the main targets of fan ire.

“Gareth Bale is one of the best players in the world,” Perez, who set a transfer record when he bought Bale from Tottenham Hotspur for around 100 million euros ($106 million) in 2013, told reporters.

“The biggest clubs fought and continue to fight to secure his services.

“The only thing I can say is that we shouldn't forget what he was able to achieve in his first year at Real Madrid.”

News sport : The Washington Wizards went bowling at the White House

It helped the Cleveland Cavaliers shake off the bad vibes of six straight losses. It gave the Golden State Warriors a bit of a boost in the midst of a four-game, six-night, pre-All-Star-break road trip. So what the heck, why not — with the Washington Wizards in the throes of a dispiriting 5-13 stretch that's dropped them from potential Fnals dark horses to the middle of the Eastern pack, why not just take 'er easy for a bit and go bowl a few frames?

[DraftKings: FREE entry to huge cash Fantasy Basketball Contest with first deposit]

With the Wizards off Wednesday ahead of a Thursday night showdown with the scuffling, staggering, fresh-off-a-loss-in-Boston Memphis Grizzlies, head coach Randy Wittman and company pulled up the Internet, checked out Bullets Forever, took blogger Bobby Steele's advice and headed out to the local lanes for some decompression and bonding. Of course, when you're in "House of Cards" country, the sweetest neighborhood alley resides in a pretty familiar setting:

Yes, the Wiz headed to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue — an address that changes all the rules — to roll a few at the Harry S. Truman bowling alley in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building during a visit to the White House that, as depicted in John Wall's Instagram photo above, included a trip to the West Wing. Not a bad way to spend your day off.

Speaking of items depicted in that Instagram pic, though — what's up with Wall's hand-on-top-of/in-front-of-the-ball release? I mean, far be it from me to question the form of a two-time NBA All-Star, but that's not how Big Ern did it, so I think John might want to rethink his approach.

Then again, Washington's favorite point guard seems to have found some success with his motion. Lookatdaflickadatwrist:

Despite his skill at picking up spares, though, Wall didn't make it to the finals of the tournament among the Wizards' players. In the championship round, veteran Paul Pierce picked off swingman Martell Webster to take home the bragging rights as Washington's single greatest pinhead.

"It was tough, competitive, but at the end, the No. 1 seed always prevails," Pierce told Monumental Network.

That's precisely the sort of confidence the Wizards hope to carry over into a tough stretch of the schedule that sees them welcome three Western squads — the Grizzlies, DeMarcus Cousins' Sacramento Kings and the Portland Trail Blazers — into Verizon Center before embarking on a four-game West Coast road trip that features matchups with the resurgent Utah Jazz, the Chris Paul-led Los Angeles Clippers (perhaps once again featuring a healthy Blake Griffin), a second meeting with Boogie and George Karl, and a visit to Oracle Arena to take on the league-leading Warriors.

[Follow Dunks Don't Lie on Tumblr: The best slams from all of basketball]

Tough sledding, to be sure, but with the Raptors struggling and the Chicago Bulls fighting through multiple major injuries, the Wizards find themselves just three games back of the No. 3 seed with an opportunity to rise if they can just rediscover their early-season form.

“This is a chance to see where we stand,” Wall said, according to Jorge Castillo of the Washington Post. “And try to get over the hump.”

If the Cavs' and Dubs' post-bowling-party records are any indication, the Wizards have already gotten themselves off to a pretty solid start.

News sport : OU student athletes issue statement calling for more investigation of SAE racist incident

Oklahoma student athletes Thursday called for further investigation into the SAE video that depicted several members of the now disbanded fraternity participating in a racist chant during a bus trip. Two members of the fraternity who were seen leading the chant have been expelled from Oklahoma and university president David Boren said more expulsions would be coming once more identifications were made.

“The two students that have already been expelled are only a symptom of a larger disease, a disease perpetuated by the leadership of Sigma Alpha Epsilon,” the statement read. “The chant was not invented by the two that led it, but taught to underclassmen by people of higher authority. As a team, we have come to a consensus that, in any organization, the leadership is responsible for the culture created, an in this case, encouraged.”

Oklahoma football also said its protest of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity will continue for the rest of the week.

The statement, posted on the Twitter accounts of several football players, noted the football team would abstain from practice for the third time this week and would not return to the field until after spring break on March 23. Oklahoma players will use Thursday’s practice to demonstrate silently on Owen Field as they have done during other practice times this week. The statement also said the team would continue to wear black on the practice field and during media opportunities as part of the protest.

“We simply cannot wait to get back on the practice field in our pursuit of a national championship,” the statement read, “but even a national championship is not more important than using our platform as student athletes to make our university and our nation a better place.”

The statement also said the goal of the student athletes on the Oklahoma campus was to show their unity despite race and hope that a similar culture is created across the campus.

“Our hope is to shed light on this issue and promote meaningful change at a national level,” the statement read. “But before we can change the nation, we make it our mission to change our campus. We seek to accomplish this goal by stepping out of the spotlight and integrating the student-athlete experience and the student experience. As student athletes of all races, classes, and creeds, we hope to show the university and the community that we are defined by more than the numbers on our jerseys, and that we are human beings that desire to get to know our classmates as we all attempt to end the culture of exclusivity on this campus.”

News sport : Bears sign safety Antrel Rolle, WR Eddie Royal to three-year deals

The Bears improved on both sides of the ball by signing safety Antrel Rolle and wide receiver Eddie Royal to three-year deals on Wednesday night.

Rolle, a 10-year veteran and three-time Pro Bowl selection, started all 16 games in each of the last five seasons for the New York Giants at strong safety. The 32-year-old Rolle registered 464 tackles and 14 interceptions during his time in New York. After being picked in the first round of the 2005 draft, Rolle spent the first five seasons of his career with Arizona, where he totaled 335 tackles and 12 interceptions.

Rolle, whose deal is reportedly worth $11.25 million with $5 million guaranteed, will join outside linebacker Pernell McPhee, who signed a five-year contract with the Bears earlier on Wednesday.

“It’s official,” Rolle wrote on Instagram. “Today was a long, painful, and exhausting day! But in the end we both get what we want. A team that wants to win and a player that would give them everything he got to win! Thank you to the Chicago organization for making this day possible once again.”

Royal spent the past three seasons with the San Diego Chargers, with his 2014 campaign being his most productive with 62 catches for 778 yards and seven touchdowns.

Interestingly, the best season of Royal’s career came in his rookie year with Denver in 2008 when he caught 91 passes for 980 yards and five touchdowns. His quarterback? None other than the Bears’ Jay Cutler.

Overall in his career, Royal has recorded 338 catches for 3,750 yards and 25 touchdowns. With Brandon Marshall traded to the Jets, Royal will provide a nice complement to Alshon Jeffrey and tight end Martellus Bennett.

Royal has also proven to be a capable punt returner, averaging 10.6 yards and scoring twice on 111 attempts in his career.

The financial terms of Royal’s deal were not disclosed.

News sport : Chip Kelly rocks the Frank Underwood/'House of Cards' double-tap

They're master decisionmakers, men who manipulate others' lives like chess pieces, men whose singular vision leads inexorably forward, no matter what collateral damage (to lives, or to the NFC East) they cause along the way. Sure, we can compare Eagles coach Chip Kelly and "House of Cards" impresario Frank Underwood on a macro level, but now they're even using the same tics.

Kelly's press conference on Wednesday was a masterpiece of definitive statement and media scolding, a lecture in which Kelly took the guessers and speculators to task for assuming they knew what he'd been plotting with his many trades. And he ended it with the classic Frank Underwood double-tap on the table, the sign that he owned this room and he was done.

For a refresher, here's the master at work, at the moment when he achieved all he'd sought:

Five bucks says Chip Kelly has Roger Goodell's job in three years.

News sport : Remembering junior hockey’s Terry Trafford, lessons his death taught (Video)

On March 11, 2014, Terry Trafford’s body was found in Saginaw, Michigan. An autopsy concluded that the cause of death was asphyxiation, and that it was self-inflicted.

He had been sent home by the OHL Saginaw Spirit for violating team rules, and felt his hockey career was over. He had been missing since March 3; Skye Cieszlak, his girlfriend, told Yahoo Sports at the time that Trafford was “completely devastated” when she spoke to him after the cut.

His death prompted an outcry for better mental health education and treatment options in the OHL, as well as for young players to not hesitate to use those options at their disposal.

One year later, Yahoo Canada went back to Michigan where Trafford played to understand the legacy of his tragic death - in raising awareness for mental health issues and opening up the discourse for many young people. This is the first in a series of videos aimed at furthering the discussion on mental health and sports.

News sport : Report: Warrant issued in different case for owner of reported stolen Cup car

A bench warrant has reportedly been issued for the arrest of Team Xtreme owner John Cohen over failure to pay a settlement in a civil lawsuit in New Jersey.

Nearly two weeks ago, Team Xtreme's No. 44 car was reported stolen from the parking lot of an Atlanta-area hotel before race weekend at Atlanta Motor Speedway. It was recovered approximately 24 hours later. The team withdrew from the Atlanta race and failed to qualify at Las Vegas.

Per NJ.com, the settlement said that Cohen should pay two former business partners $55,000 after the failed launch of a Manhattan nightclub.

Cohen told the site that he wasn't the one named in the lawsuit.

From NJ.com:

Cohen, reached on his cell phone Thursday morning, denied any wrongdoing. "It's a story that's not true," he said. "I didn't make the settlement."

When asked specifically about the warrant, he replied, "That's not me. That's my father. That has nothing to do with me." He referred other questions to his lawyer, who could not be immediately reached. A NASCAR spokesman did not immediately have a response.

When Elliott Malone, a lawyer for the plaintiffs in the civil case, was told Cohen denied making the settlement and being named in the arrest warrant, he replied, "My response is one word: Typical."

According to Malone, his two clients entered an agreement with Cohen to start a nightclub contingent on Cohen securing a liquor license. He never did, and one of the former business partners believes he used the money to fund Team Xtreme.

The site also reports that Cohen is involved in a lawsuit involving the purchase of a car from now-defunct Swan Racing in 2014. Swan expanded to a two-car operation at the beginning of last year but after early struggles, it disbanded, leaving Parker Kligerman without a ride. Cole Whitt went to BK Racing as a third member of the team.

While Cohen's reported stolen No. 44 car was recovered along with the truck pulling the trailer it was in, according to to the Morrow (Georgia) Police Department, the trailer is still missing. A warrant has been issued for a person of interest in the incident surrounding the car.

Team Xtreme is listed on the entry list for Sunday's race at Phoenix with Travis Kvapil scheduled to drive the car. After qualifying for the Daytona 500 (despite a crash in qualifying that forced the team to ship a backup car down to Daytona before the Budweiser Duels), the team has competed in 16 races over four years.

News sport : Gonzaga aims to shed the label of postseason underachievers

LAS VEGAS — As they climbed a ladder to slice off their souvenir strands of net after winning a third straight WCC tournament on Tuesday night, many Gonzaga players admit they had already begun looking ahead to their next challenge.

The Zags are eager to play deep into March for the first time in a while.

[DraftKings: Play Conference Championship Fantasy – Free entry with first deposit]

A program that rose from obscurity by outperforming expectations during the NCAA tournament has endured a string of early exits in recent years. Gonzaga has survived the opening weekend only twice since its remarkable stretch of 17 consecutive NCAA tournaments began with a stunning run to the 1999 Elite Eight and surprise Sweet 16 appearances the following two years.

Whether or not this could be Gonzaga's breakthrough team has been a topic of discussion since before the season even began. The deep, skilled Zags have only fueled those hopes by going 32-2, ascending as high as No. 3 in the AP poll and positioning themselves to earn no worse than a No. 2 seed on Sunday when the NCAA tournament bracket is revealed.

"I'm hungrier than ever," senior point guard Kevin Pangos said. "Some of the guys who have been here in the past are hungrier than ever. We just know that we have a great team and great guys on this team. We want to play together as long as possible."

If the national perception is Gonzaga has been astonishingly consistent in the regular season under coach Mark Few but has underachieved in the NCAA tournament, a closer look reveals it's a bit more complicated than that.

Gonzaga has advanced past the opening round in each of the past six NCAA tournaments, an achievement only Kansas has duplicated. The Zags also have seldom crashed out of the NCAA tournament at the hands of a lesser foe.

They were outclassed by a juggernaut North Carolina team in 2009 and by superior Syracuse and Arizona teams in 2010 and 2014. They endured late-game heartbreak in a double-overtime round of 32 loss to Arizona in 2003 and in a Sweet 16 loss to UCLA in 2006. The only loss that looked inexcusable at the time came when ninth-seeded Wichita State upset the top-seeded Zags in 2013, but the Shockers validated that win by reaching the Final Four two weeks later and piling up a 63-5 record the past two seasons.

"I don't think we're going to change what we do to prepare for the NCAA tournament," Few said. "We've won a game in that thing for [six] straight years. Our problem is we keep running into Arizona, North Carolina, Syracuse in Buffalo, Wichita hitting 13 threes."

Gonzaga won't be able to make the excuse that it ran into a vastly superior team if it loses early in the NCAA tournament this month. Aside from top-ranked Kentucky, there aren't many programs that boast the combination of size, depth, skill and postseason experience that the Zags have this season.

Where Gonzaga is strongest is in the frontcourt because of a trio of big men whose skill sets complement each other perfectly. Przemek Karnowski is a wide-bodied 7 footer who is proficient in the low block on offense and protects the rim defensively. Kyle Wiltjer has evolved into a versatile scorer capable of knocking down pick-and-pop threes, facing up and driving or doing damage with his back to the basket. And freshman Domantas Sabonis has become a valuable third big man because of his knack for scoring at the paint and his ability to defend and rebound.

Seniors Pangos, Gary Bell and Byron Wesley start on the perimeter and junior Kyle Dranginis and Vanderbilt transfer Eric McClellan are two of the first guards off the bench. All are 3-point threats with the exception of Wesley, a slasher who averaged 17.8 points per game last season at USC but has settled into a complementary role with the Zags.

The potency of Gonzaga's offense was on full display in the WCC title game when the Zags avenged a loss to BYU the previous weekend with a 91-75 victory. Karnowski, Sabonis and Wiltjer punished the smaller, thinner Cougars in the paint, Pangos and Dranginis attacked aggressively off the dribble and Gonzaga's array of shooters took advantage when they were left free and sank 8 of 12 3-pointers.

"We need to keep getting these guys to play the way we did [Tuesday night]," Few said. "We were attacking on offense. We were spread out. It was Kevin, it was Gary, it was Wiltjer, it was Przemek, it was Domantas. It was coming at you from a bunch of different directions. We've got to continue to do that. We've got to be able to count on our defense and we've got to be physical."

Playing in the WCC instead of a power conference has sometimes been a disadvantage for Gonzaga in years past because its focus tends to wane late in conference play and then it struggles to get it back. That's why it's a potential longterm positive for the Zags if BYU emerges as a perennially worthy challenger.

The Cougars had won eight straight entering the WCC title game and boast a formidable perimeter-oriented offense. Gonzaga came out sharp from the opening tip-off Tuesday night because the Zags knew they were facing a quality opponent and they wanted to avenge their previous loss.

"Losing was a wakeup call for us on how we had to approach the game and how we had to focus," Pangos said. "It gave us a chance to learn how we have to play. It would be nice to learn that in a win, but we responded to the loss like we had to."

Gonzaga has enjoyed a great regular season this year, defeating NCAA tournament-bound SMU, St. John's and Georgia, handing UCLA its only loss at Pauley Pavilion and taking Arizona to overtime in Tucson. Fair or unfair, however, the Zags know they'll be judged by what they accomplish this March.

One advantage this Gonzaga team has over previous editions is the postseason experience of Wiltjer, who was a shooter off the bench for the 2012 Kentucky team that won the national championship. Asked if he learned any lessons during that run that he has passed onto his current teammates, Wiltjer said that he's only told them how much fun those three weeks were and how great it would be to do it again.

"We thought we had a chance to be special that year, but there were a lot of freshmen and we were unsure of ourselves at first," Wiltjer said. "There was a lot of the same uncertainty with that team that there is with this team right now too. What we have to do is the same thing that team did. We have to play harder than our opponent each night and just try to prove people wrong."

News sport : VOD: Tony Dungy's speech to the Texas Longhorns

Former Indianapolis Colts and Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Tony Dungy stopped by to speak to the Texas football team Monday at the request of coach Charlie Strong.

Dungy was in Austin for a charity event and said he wore his Super Bowl rings to show the Texas players, telling them that talent isn't the only key to winning football games (In October, Strong said his team needed to learn how to win). Dungy won a Super Bowl as a player with the Pittsburgh Steelers and as a coach with the Colts.

"I can tell you one thing I've learned as a player and as a coach, you don't win these with talent," Dungy said. "Talent is a part of it, but talent isn’t all of it. As a matter of fact, my head coach with the Steelers, Chuck Noll, who I think is the best coach who as ever, ever coached the game, he said something my first year that I always remembered. He said that champions don’t do extraordinary things. Champions do the ordinary things better than everyone else."

News sport : DeMarco Murray prepared to sign with Eagles, per reports

FILE - In this Sept. 28, 2014, file photo, Dallas Cowboys' DeMarco Murray (29) sprints to the end zone for a touchdown as New Orleans Saints' Jairus Byrd, left, attempts to stop him during the second half of an NFL football game in Arlington, Texas. The Saints' Kenny Vaccaro (32) and Corey White (24) watch on the play. NFL free agency begins Tuesday, March 10, 2015. (AP Photo/Brandon Wade, File) DeMarco Murray is preparing to jump ship from the Dallas Cowboys in favor of divisional rival Philadelphia, according to published reports.

ESPN's Adam Schefter indicated that Murray was en route to Philadelphia on Thursday morning with the expectation of signing with the Eagles. "Murray would consider a final, last minute offer from the Cowboys, per source," Schefter wrote, "but he's going to Philadelphia with the intent to sign."

There's still plenty of time for this potential signing to turn south — or southwest, as the case may be — but indications are that Murray is, at the very least, not definitively tied to the Cowboys any longer. Earlier this week he deleted "Cowboys" from his Twitter bio, which could be read either as hurt feelings or as a negotiating ploy.

The move would signal the latest rumble in a seismic shift in Philadelphia, where Chip Kelly has virtually rebuilt the team's offense and may not be done dealing. Murray would replace LeSean McCoy, who was dealt to Buffalo, and would be taking handoffs from ... well, it's not certain who will be Philadelphia's quarterback just yet, but it could be Sam Bradford.

Dallas, meanwhile, would find itself having to replace a workhorse back who, in all fairness, ran up huge mileage and took significant punishment last season while leading the Cowboys deep into the playoffs. Could the Cowboys fill Murray's slot with former Vikings running back Adrian Peterson? The possibility has long been there, and now the opportunity may be, as well.

News sport : Michigan C Jack Miller won't play football in 2015

Michigan will not have a returning starter at center in 2014.

Jack Miller, the Wolverines' starter in 2014, won't play football in 2015 according to an athletic department official. Miller would have been a fifth-year senior in 2015.

According to TheWolverine.com, the decision came after Miller participated in a few spring practices this season.

From TheWolverine.com:

Miller spoke with enthusiasm and anticipation following Jim Harbaugh's introduction as Michigan's new head coach. Miller talked about a U-M team that was ready to win, but had to have a little extra push to get over the top in that area. He sounded hopeful that Michigan's veteran players, combined with a new crew of coaches, could accomplish it together.

Miller was a rock on Michigan's offensive line in 2014, starting every game. He started four games in 2013. He was an integral part of the Wolverines' offensive line improvement in 2014. With new offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier, Michigan running backs averaged 4.6 yards a carry in 2014 vs. 3.3 yards a carry in 2013. Plus, the Wolverines gave up 10 fewer sacks (26) in 2014 than they did in 2013.
