Villa Cup win marred by pitch invasion

Aston Villa sank West Bromwich Albion 2-0 to become the first team to march into the FA Cup semi-finals but the win was marred by chaotic crowd scenes.

London - Aston Villa sank West Bromwich Albion 2-0 to become the first team to march into the FA Cup semi-finals but the win was marred by chaotic crowd scenes with goalscorer Fabian Delph revealing he was bitten.

After giant-killers Bradford City played out a 0-0 draw with Reading in their quarter-final, Villa's second victory over their local rivals in five days at Villa Park was a full-blooded affair featuring two sendings off and crowd disorder.

Villa captain Delph, whose 51st minute strike set them on the way to victory before Scott Sinclair finished the job five minutes from time, spoke of his alarm as he tried to leave the field at the end while engulfed by hundreds of celebrating fans.

“It was dangerous. Someone tried to take my boot off. People tried to kiss me and were biting me,” the England international told the BBC.

“It was very, very scary. My armband got nicked, someone got my left boot, but I could appreciate the relief the fans are feeling after a result like that.”

Villa's euphoric day, as their resurgence continues under new manager Tim Sherwood, took a bad turn after two late sendings off - Albion's Claudio Yacob and Villa substitute Jack Grealish - added to the fevered atmosphere.

Some Albion fans appeared to rip out seats and hurl them on to the playing surface, while dozens of Villa supporters invaded the pitch in celebration even before referee Anthony Taylor had sounded the final whistle.

At the end, many more Villa fans flooded on to the field but as they swamped their Wembley-bound heroes, it had all seemed largely good-natured, if uncontrolled.

It all meant more derby misery for Albion, who had succumbed to defeat from a late penalty in the Premier League fixture at the same venue on Tuesday.

The visitors' anguish was made complete when, following what seemed a harsh second yellow card for Yacob for an innocuous challenge, Sinclair completed a sweet counter-attack with a delightful, curling finish five minutes from time.

Youngster Grealish then earned a second yellow card in stoppage for what was construed by referee Taylor, perhaps harshly, as a dive.

In the other last eight ties, Liverpool entertain Championship (second-tier) Blackburn Rovers on Sunday and holders Arsenal visit Manchester United on Monday.

While seven-times winners Villa can look forward to a Wembley appearance, third-tier Bradford, who knocked out Premier League leaders Chelsea and Sunderland in a remarkable run to the last eight, will have to try again to book their historic place.

They dominated much of the second half but were unable to break down the resolute defence of second-tier Reading at Valley Parade.

Despite living a charmed life, the visitors could have won it in the closing minutes when Oliver Norwood's looping free kick hit the post and caused havoc in the Bradford area.

“It was just two teams going at it 100 percent in a proper cup tie and it was difficult for both sides I think,” Bradford forward Jon Stead told BT Sport.

“We're still in the hat but there's a little bit of disappointment because we've not got through.

“We (dominated) the second half so that we can take great credit from but it's half a job so we've still got to do the business down there.”

Reading produced the first moment of quality when Russian Pavel Pogrebnyak's well-struck shot cannoned off the post.

Bradford carved out the next opportunity when Gary Liddle's teasing deep cross evaded everyone before clipping the outside of the post.

Stead, who had scored in all the previous rounds, was Bradford's focal point after halftime as they continued to lay siege to the visitors' goal.

News sport : Packers keep Randall Cobb with four-year deal worth $40 million

Randall Cobb decided that (more) money didn't mean as much as a run at a Super Bowl.

The Green Bay Packers earned a major victory before the start of free agency, retaining Cobb with a four-year contract worth $40 million, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Cobb might have received as much as $11-12 million per year or more from salary-cap-flush teams such as the Oakland Raiders or Jacksonville Jaguars, but he opted to stay in Green Bay. The Packers, loaded on offense, could be among the handful of Super Bowl favorites entering 2015.

[Check out Shutdown Corner's full 2015 free agent rankings – click here for offensive players, and click here for defensive players and specialists]

The Packers privately had expressed some reservation in going north of $10 million per year to retain Cobb, especially after having given a contract to de facto No. 1 receiver Jordy Nelson — four years, $39 million — that came in south of that per-year average.

Nelson led the team in receiving with 98 receptions for 1,519 yards and 13 touchdowns, and Cobb finished second in all three categories with 91 catches for 1,287 yards and 12 TDs.

Playing with Aaron Rodgers the next four seasons could give Cobb and the Packers chances at multiple titles. Consider this a hometown discount, even at a whopping $10 million per year.

News sport : Ticket Punched: Murray State miscue allows Belmont to hit winner

For a second, maybe a smidge more, Saturday night, Belmont’s hopes of winning the Ohio Valley Conference tournament were dashed.

[DraftKings: Play March Madness Fantasy College Hoops. $20 Entry. $20,000 Guaranteed Cash Prizes.]

Murray State big man Jarvis Williams collected a rebound off a miss by the Bruins and the Racers appeared on their way to a 26th consecutive victory. But Williams attempted to pass the ball to guard T.J. Sapp who wasn’t expecting it so quickly and he fumbled it out of bounds giving Belmont new life.

Moments later, Taylor Barnette curled off a screen near the top of arc and drilled a deep 3-pointer to give Belmont an 88-87 victory and automatic berth in the NCAA tournament.

Murray State had 3.2 seconds to try to travel the length of the court and hit a game winner but it was unable to do so and the nation’s second longest active winning streak was over.

[Fill out a Tourney bracket and get a free Big Gulp Drink]

Murray State was 16-0 this season when scoring 80 or more prior to losing to Belmont which is back in the tournament for the second time in the past three seasons. The Bruins hit 15 3-pointers in the game to upset the Racers. Craig Bradshaw scored 25 points and Evan Bradds added 21, but Barnette was the hero with all nine of his points coming from behind the 3-point line.

It is a bitter loss for Murray State because it almost certainly cost the Racers a trip to the NCAA tournament. Murray State likely has no chance at earning an at-large bid even though it has a 27-5 record. The Racers played only one NCAA Tournament-caliber team outside of conference play this season and lost by 27 to Xavier.

News sport : Running back Mark Ingram re-signs with New Orleans Saints

Well, the market for running backs isn't totally dead.

The New Orleans Saints, who are in the worst situation relative to the salary cap in the NFL, re-signed Mark Ingram. According to multiple reports, the deal is for four years and $16 million.

Dallas Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray, who can become a free agent when free agency opens on Tuesday, will be studying that deal closely.

[Check out Shutdown Corner's full 2015 free agent rankings – click here for offensive players, and click here for defensive players and specialists]

The Saints were about $16 million over the cap, according to OverTheCap.com, and will have to find a way to get under the cap by the time the new league year starts on Tuesday.

For a while it looked like Ingram, a former Heisman Trophy winner, would be a first-round disappointment for the Saints. But after showing a few good signs in 2013 on 78 carries, Ingram became a reliable workhorse in his contract year last season. He had 964 yards and nine touchdowns on 226 carries last season, his fourth in the NFL. He was named to the Pro Bowl.

The Saints have severe salary-cap issues, but they still wanted to retain Ingram instead of going cheap at running back. That should be a positive sign to the other backs about to hit free agency.

News sport : Diver recovers club Rory McIlroy threw in the water at Doral

Rory McIlroy's 3-iron was at the bottom of a hazard at TPC Blue Monster on Friday. By Saturday night, it might be on eBay.

A diver waded into the hazard on Saturday and retrieved the club McIlroy threw after his second shot in Round 2 wound up well left of his intended target and at the bottom of the drink.

McIlroy said after the 2-under 70 on Friday that he was fine with chucking the club because he didn't believe he would need it for the final 10 holes of the day.

The world No. 1 shot 72 on Saturday. While that number was worse than his Friday score, he at least finished up with all 14 clubs in the bag.

News sport : Free agency preview: Bargain shopping at each position

Free agency can't be all about dropping nine figures on Ndamukong Suh. There has to be a few good items on the discount rack.

But which players might be the best bargains? Let's pick one for each position:

QUARTERBACK: Matt Moore

Really, the quarterback free-agent class is nothing to get excited about, from top to bottom. But the last time we really saw Moore, he was having a good 2011 as the Dolphins' starter with an 87.1 rating. He has thrown 29 passes since, as Ryan Tannehill took over as the franchise quarterback. With many teams having serious issues at quarterback, Moore should get a look.

RUNNING BACK: Roy Helu

Helu was a fourth-round pick by Washington in 2011, but was usurped by 2012 rookie Alfred Morris. But he has been pretty good in the passing game, giving clues that he could take on a bigger role. And the best part of him being buried behind Morris is he has very few miles on him.

RECEIVER: Nate Washington

(USA Today Sports Images) Washington is the 40-degree day among this receiver class. Nobody has anything to say about a 40-degree day (h/t Stringer Bell). Yet Washington has been a steady, productive receiver for many years, and will come at a fraction of the cost as some of the other receivers in this class.

TIGHT END: Virgil Green

Green isn't going to light up a passing game, but what he does well is block. There's value in that, and he was a big part of C.J. Anderson's Pro Bowl season last year. He's only 26, as well.

OFFENSIVE LINEMAN: Jermey Parnell

There should be trepidation about any player who has six NFL seasons and just seven starts. Five of those starts came last year, however, when Doug Free was out for the Cowboys. And Parnell played pretty well. He shouldn't have a huge price tag because of his lack of starting experience, but he might be a late bloomer.

DEFENSIVE LINEMAN: Karl Klug

Klug might not be a great bargain, because it should be clear he's capable of taking on a bigger role after spending four years as a backup with the Titans. He can rush the passer, he holds up well against the run, he is versatile and is still just 26. He's not a big name but could be a valuable addition.

LINEBACKER: Akeem Ayers

Ayers looked like a typical second-round bust, as even the talent-poor Titans didn't have a use for him anymore. They traded Ayers to the Patriots, where he had a good run late in the season. Ayers went to the bench (understandably) when Chandler Jones returned. But he showed he can be a solid pass rusher, and he's just 26. When the Patriots are interested in a player's talent, other teams should be too.

CORNERBACK: Rashean Mathis

It's hard to trust aging corners, but there's no sign that Mathis is letting up. Mathis had yet another good season with the Lions last season. Mathis will be 35 next season, but that's why he'd come at a much lower price than some of his counterparts.

SAFETY: Tyvon Branch

Branch has had no shortage of interested teams since the Raiders cut him for cap reasons. But he might not get quite what he wants as a free agent because of his injury history. He has played just five games the past two years. But he was a rising star a few years ago, and the injuries should lead to a discount. It might be tough to bet on him staying healthy, but if he does he would likely be a tremendous value.

News sport : Philadelphia goaltending coach left because of spat with Flyers: Report

It’s not often when you see a goaltending coach pick up and leave in the middle of a hockey season. Check … near the end of a season for a team in the middle of a playoff race.

Still, it didn’t seem like such a major deal when Jeff Reese opted to leave Philly on Friday after six years of service to the team. The team sent out a release, it appeared the parting was a mutual understanding. Hey, this happens with teams sometimes. Geez, the Devils fire coaches at all times of the year.

But the breakup was quite bad according to a report by Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Daily News.

Reese’s issues apparently stem from a Feb. 26 game in Toronto when then-injured Steve Mason was asked to relieve Rob Zepp. Mason had knee surgery on Feb. 10, and apparently he wasn’t completely back up to speed at that moment. The Flyers’ original timeframe was 2-4 weeks.

According to multiple sources, Reese was peeved that Mason relieved starter Rob Zepp after two goals, since Mason was told that day he would not play unless Zepp sustained serious injury.

Sources said Mason was given that word by the team, asking him to suit up because the team had salary cap issues and could not afford another backup goaltender for the game.

And

In his post-game press conference that night following the 3-2 loss to the Maple Leafs, coach Craig Berube admitted Mason “would have preferred Zepp to finish the game … but that’s my gut and I went with it.” Mason limped out of Air Canada Centre that night to the team’s bus.

That's one way to tick off a player, especially if he's still trying to come back from surgery. In the story, when asked further about the issue, Berube didn’t say much:

Berube did not have an answer. He said he was not concerned about how Mason would react on Saturday in such a pivotal moment.

“‘Reeser' is a great coach,” Berube said, referring all other questions to the team’s statement. “You read the release. No further comment.”

Mason has regained some of his Columbus rookie-year form working with Reese. This year he has a 2.25 goals against average and .925 save percentage. If Philadelphia's 'secondary scoring' was an issue, its goaltending with Mason was not.

The Flyers are five points back of the Bruins for the final playoff spot. If they really want to make the postseason upheaval may not play out well.

News sport : Padres Andrew Cashner meets his lookalike teammate

It's always fun spotting a celebrity or fan who happens to look like a major league player and doing the old side-by-side photo comparison. However, in the case of San Diego Padres pitcher Andrew Cashner, we didn't even have to look outside his own team's spring training facility to find his doppelganger.

As Corey Brock of MLB.com writes, a minor league pitcher named Jeffery Enloe is a spitting image of the 6-foot-6 right-hander, right on down to his light hair and full beard.

That's "Cash" on the right and the man now known as "Coins" on the left, which is fitting given that's the arm each pitcher throws with. That's a notable physical difference. Visually, Cashner's signature mullet is the only way to tell them apart at first glance. If you look a little closer, you might be able to tell that Cashner is one inch taller than Enloe. Aside from that though, it's like looking at long lost brothers, if not twins.

[Baseball is back! Check out Yahoo For Spring Training for great spring training pics.]

As Brock notes, Padres minor league staff started to notice the resemblance last season as Enloe, a 37th round draft pick in 2013, slowly established his presence in the system. However, it was newly arrived pitcher James Shields who brought it to Cashner's attention after spotting Enloe during an early spring workout.

"Shields told me about him, but I hadn't met him," said Cashner, who was admittedly suspicious. "But then I saw him and it was scary. I was like, 'Holy smokes, he looks just like me.'"

Once the connection was made and Padres players saw Cash and Coins together, it was only a matter of time before this happened.

(Corey Brock/MLB.com)

One can easily spot Matt Kemp getting a chuckle, which is part of the reason why manager Bud Black arranged the meeting.
As part of manager Bud Black's team-building exercises in the morning, instructors Trevor Hoffman and Mark Loretta walked over to the Minor League clubhouse to get Enloe.

"They told me what was going on and to have fun with it," Enloe said. "They gave me a little heads-up."

[Yahoo Sports Fantasy Baseball: Sign up and join a league today!]

It was a nice moment to lighten the mood, but Enloe's ultimate goal is to become Cashner's full-time teammate at the major league level. In that regard, he still has a ways to go. In 34 appearances (18 starts) at the minor league level, the 25-year-old has a 4.99 ERA and a 84-35 strikeout-to-walk ratio. He might even be considered a long shot to make it, but perhaps spending time in the Padres clubhouse will be just the motivation he needs to move up the depth chart.

News sport : Jim Harbaugh is in full uniform at Oakland A's spring training (Photos)

Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh is a man of many interests. Not only does he love Judge Judy and Big Sean, he’s apparently a huge baseball fan.

While Michigan students are still on spring break for a few more days, Harbaugh took a trip to Arizona to take in spring training with the Oakland A’s.

According to ESPN.com, Harbaugh was invited by A’s manager Bob Melvin and Melvin will let him coach first base in full uniform for a few innings on Saturday afternoon.

“It’s a great day for baseball, let’s play two as Ernie Banks would say,” Harbaugh said, per ESPN.com. “How does it get any better than that? It’s a beautiful day for baseball, and just have a chance to put on the uniform. I haven’t had a baseball on since American Legion ball.”

Harbaugh and Melvin have known each other since they were teenagers growing up in Palo Alto, Calif.

“I played on the same team in American Legion, but not at the same time,” Harbaugh said. “Bob was the legend and went to the World Series the year before I was on the team. I wasn’t near the player Bob was.”

When Harbaugh was the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers, he invited Melvin on the sidelines as a guest. Melvin said he’s simply returning the favor.

"I wanted to give him this experience because of when (the 49ers) brought me in, I stood on the sidelines maybe 15 feet away from him, got to watch some games down there, got to watch his meetings, watch his coaches prepare,” Melvin said. “There are a lot of similarities, obviously different sports, but obviously a lot of similarities in the interaction between the coaches.”

Following his quick trip to Arizona, Harbaugh and the Wolverines are scheduled to return for their fourth spring practice on Tuesday, March 10.

Soweto derby ends in stalemate

Despite a fast and furious second half, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates were made to share the spoils in their Soweto Derby clash.

|||

Johannesburg – Despite a fast and furious second half, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates were made to share the spoils in their Soweto Derby clash at FNB Stadium.

An ordinary opening half made way for a frantic second, which seemed to go by in a flash as the Soweto rivals played up to the always highly-anticipated clash between the country's premier clubs in Gauteng.

Chiefs extended their lead at the top of the table to 11 points, after second-placed Wits lost to Bloemfontein Celtic on Friday night, gifting Chiefs the chance to grab three points to put further daylight between themselves and the Clever Boys.

But a resilient Buccaneers side, now unbeaten in nine straight Premiership games, will feel the happier of the two having claimed a point, which takes them up to third in the league standings.

The game started brightly for Chiefs, who had a penalty shout turned down in the fifth minute despite George Lebese complaining that he had been hacked down by Siyabonga Sangweni's clumsy tackle inside the box.

Pirates woke up and proceeded to dominate the next quarter and put their cross-town rivals on the back foot for most of the half.

Chiefs came closest when Eric Mathoho headed Siphiwe Tshabalala's free-kick narrowly over the crossbar after finding himself in acres of space inside the box.

A minute later, Brighton Mhlongo was forced into his first real save of the match when Tshabalala had a go from a long way out, thanks to Bernard Parker's recovery and counter-attack from the middle of the park.

But the half fizzled out somewhat as the teams went into the break after a reasonable 45 which saw little in the way of chances at either end.

The second half started with a bang and was far quicker in tempo, up and down the pitch.

Amakhosi used neat touches and short, sharp passes to work their way past Pirates' helpless defence but poor decisions let the Glamour Boys down.

Mhlongo made a stunning save on 48 minutes to thwart Reneilwe Letsholonyane from distance, with the midfielder curling a shot goalwards but instead finding a two-handed diving stop from Mhlongo.

It was going Chiefs' way and Tshabalala took advantage by cutting inside to unleash a thunderous left-footed shot from distance, rattling the crossbar with an effort worthy of a goal.

Pirates replied with a long-range stunner of their own when Sifiso Myeni found the underside of the crossbar with his vicious attempt on 65 minutes.

The shot took a nasty deflection en route to goal and wrong-footed Itumeleng Khune who was relieved to see the ball bounce straight down, but not over the goal-line, and out of danger.

Chiefs were made to rue missed opportunities nine minutes from the end when second-half replacement Siphelele Mthembu failed to round-off a superb Chiefs move which started with a burly run by Parker down the middle.

Mthembu, however, got his feet caught up and could only chest his foiled shot tamely at a grateful Mhlongo, who was alone in the box.

Mthembu was put through on goal shortly afterwards but again could not beat Mhlongo in a one-on-one situation.

In the end, it was a fair reflection on a breathtaking game which brought the crowd to its feet, courtesy of a second half that was unlucky not to see a goal. – Sapa

Kane double seals points for Spurs

Harry Kane struck twice as Tottenham Hotspur beat Queens Park Rangers to boost their hopes of a top-four finish.

|||

London - Harry Kane struck twice as Tottenham Hotspur beat Queens Park Rangers 2-1 to boost their hopes of a top-four finish and leave their London rivals facing an uphill battle to avoid relegation.

QPR enjoyed the better of the early exchanges at Loftus Road but in-form Kane continued his impressive run of scoring in his last five London Premier League derbies to put Spurs ahead.

Kane added his second after the break in front of England manager Roy Hodgson before former Tottenham midfielder Sandro pulled a goal back for QPR.

Spurs resisted a late onslaught to hold on to the victory which moved them up to sixth on 50 points - three behind fourth-placed Manchester United.

QPR remained in 18th place on 22 points, three behind Aston Villa.

“It's a massive win, we always seem to be winning 2-1,” Kane told the BBC. “I'm loving my football, being out there with my team mates and my mates.

“I feel good and confident, it's important for a striker to have that. The second goal was a nice composed finish.

“There are a lot of top teams up there (competing for the top four) and whoever can put a run together will be right up there.”

Both goalkeepers were called into action early on as Hugo Lloris forced Bobby Zamora's header over the bar before Rob Green produced a smart save to deny Kane.

Charlie Austin fired a shot against the underside of the crossbar as QPR piled on the pressure but Spurs snatched the lead when Kane headed in Andros Townsend's free kick.

QPR had appeals for a penalty turned down at the end of the first half when Lloris appeared to clip Mauricio Isla in the box.

But Kane scored his 16th Premier League goal of the season to double Spurs' advantage in the 68th minute when he latched on to Ryan Mason's pass and slotted the ball home.

Sandro's neat finish gave QPR a lifeline and the home side were denied another possible penalty in the dying minutes when Steven Caulker's header appeared to strike the hand of Nabil Bentaleb. – Reuters

Ajax sink SuperSport

Goals from Toriq Losper and Erwin Isaacs secured victory for Ajax Cape Town over SuperSport United at the Peter Mokaba Stadium.

|||

Johannesburg – First-half strikes from Toriq Losper and Erwin Isaacs secured a 2-1 Premiership victory for Ajax Cape Town over SuperSport United at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Saturday night.

Ajax wasted little time when Losper opened the scoring in the seventh minute. Against the run of play and with the first clear scoring chance, his clinical finish put the visitors ahead.

United looked to retaliate immediately when Thuso Phala played Dove Wome through on goal, but the striker's shot flew wide of the target.

Having suffered their biggest defeat last week when they lost 5-2 to AmaZulu, the Tshwane club continued to show signs of a leaky defence.

Just before the half-hour mark, the Urban Warriors doubled their lead. The youthful, hard-running Isaacs punished the sub par United resistance.

Having started the encounter with a conservative line-up, coach Gordon Igesund threw in Bradley Grobler and David Mathebula to spark the attack while Ajax striker Nathan Paulse was bothering the hosts with his aerial prowess.

While United launched an all-out attack on the Cape side, there remained the danger of conceding again on the counter-attack.

Jeremy Brockie had a chance in the 38th minute to pull one back for Matsatsantsa, but he was blocked by defender Mosa Lebusa.

United had another scuffed chance to head into the interval with their heads held high, but Mathebula failed to beat his marker Rivaldo Coetsee, who dispossessed him.

Phala got onto the scoresheet for the home side but the goal in the 56th minute proved inconsequential as Ajax marched away with the points. – Sapa

Liverpool the only place for Rodgers

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has admitted it would be “very difficult” for him to manage another English club.

|||

London - Brendan Rodgers has admitted it would be ‘very difficult’ for him to manage another English club as he stated his ambition to create an Anfield dynasty.

Having overseen a dramatic transformation in Liverpool’s season, Rodgers’ star is ascending once more and it has been speculated that he would be high on Manchester City’s wish-list if Manuel Pellegrini does not survive the end of this campaign.

Rodgers, however, has not been distracted by such talk as he is concentrating on making sure Liverpool fulfil the potential they have shown since he switched their system to 3-4-3 by finishing in the top four and winning silverware this season.

He signed a long-term contract extension last May and is focused on seeing the project through, with beating Blackburn at Anfield tomorrow and securing Liverpool’s first trip to Wembley since May 2012 the first target.

‘Where do you go from Liverpool, one of the biggest clubs in the world?’ said Rodgers. ‘You know when you join Liverpool you’re never going to manage Manchester United. You join Tottenham or Arsenal, the reality is you won’t do the other. You manage Swansea, you won’t manage Cardiff.

‘That is all hypothetical. Liverpool might sack me and then I need to be in work.

‘I’ve signed a deal here and I want to be here to see that through. Then, hopefully, I’ve earned enough time to warrant another deal, to keep growing and building here.

‘If I’m here after this year, it will be the longest period in any role I’ve been in football. I’ve always been the same. After three years, I’ve always moved a role or job.

‘I always saw Liverpool as a club that was going to be a destination for me, not somewhere that was part of the journey.

‘I really wanted to be here, follow some incredible managers with a support that is unrivalled, and to have success while knowing I was young enough to create and build something. That is why I came here. I know I need to justify that by working well and winning trophies. I hope that is the next step.

‘When you come here, that is what you are judged on. It is something (win trophies) I want to do for all the supporters and people here.’

Steven Gerrard could come back into the squad tomorrow if he shows he has fully recovered from the hamstring problem that has sidelined the 34-year-old for the last three weeks but, Rodgers says, there is no certainty the midfielder will go straight back into the starting line-up.

‘No one in the squad has a God-given right to walk back into the team,’ said Rodgers.

‘I have shown if players are performing well, irrespective of status or price, they play - simple as that.

‘The main thing is having him available. Having him back would make us a better squad.’

News sport : Dunk of the year nominee: Hanner Mosquera-Perea's tip jam

The most remarkable thing about this Hanner Mosquera-Perea tip dunk is how far the Indiana center came from to flush it one-handed. There were four Michigan State rebounders in the paint and Mosquera-Perea wasn't even within sight of TV cameras. The Spartans paid the price for falling asleep on the play and not putting a body on Mosquera-Perea after Nick Zeisloft's missed 3-pointer. Mosquera-Perea's flying one-handed tip dunk was so jaw-dropping that former Indiana player and current ESPN analyst Dan Dakich called it the best he'd ever seen in Assembly Hall. This one from Will Sheehey from a few years ago might be a contender too, but the Mosquera-Perea jam is definitely one of the better ones this season.

Evans, Cisse given long bans for spitting

Man United’s Jonny Evans and Newcastle’ Papiss Cisse were given long bans for spitting at each other.

London - Manchester United defender Jonny Evans and Newcastle striker Papiss Cisse were given long bans Saturday for spitting at each other during a Premier League match.

Evans denied deliberately spitting but was found guilty by an English Football Association disciplinary panel, which handed him a six-game suspension - the standard penalty for the offense.

Cisse had accepted the FA charge for the same offense. He was suspended for seven matches, as he has already received a ban for violent conduct - for elbowing Everton's Seamus Coleman - this season.

The incident occurred following a confrontation between the players during the first half of Wednesday's game at St. James' Park, which United won 1-0. It was not seen by the match officials but caught on video.

Evans, who has only recently been recalled to United's team, said in a statement released by the club on Thursday that he was “totally unaware of any spitting incident” and was “totally surprised by any suggestion of spitting.”

“It is not in my character or in my nature to spit at anybody,” Evans said, with that assertion backed up United manager Louis van Gaal later in the day.

Footage showed Evans spat toward Cisse first.

Cisse issued an apology, saying he had “reacted to something I found very unpleasant.”

United has cover at center back in Chris Smalling, Marcos Rojo and Phil Jones for the games that Evans will not be available for, starting with the FA Cup quarterfinal against Arsenal at Old Trafford on Monday.
