News sport : Chris Fowler and Kirk Herbstreit discuss what's been thrown at them (Video)

Before there was a net installed behind the crew of ESPN's College GameDay, people threw some interesting items at the crew.

Chris Fowler and Kirk Herbstreit were on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Tuesday and talked about the creativity of the signs people in the audience at GameDay's weekly locations have and the objects that have been tossed their direction.

The projectiles include golf balls, radishes and even corn, which Herbstreit said pierced the net that's now in place on the set.

Oh, and Fowler's favorite sign that didn't get confiscated by GameDay's sign police? It involved a synonym for an upset that also is the nickname of Wichita State.

News sport : The Brooklyn Nets are a bomb that will be nearly impossible to dismantle

Predictably, on Tuesday, word leaked that the Brooklyn Nets wanted to re-arrange their roster. Nothing’s imminent, of course, and the team isn’t looking to move into a rebuilding process, they just don’t like what they have. The Nets want to be a very good basketball team, a step up from the quite average (at best) basketball team they currently are, and they wouldn’t mind it if you’d help them out in that regard. Dealing Andrei Kirilenko for straight payroll relief just isn’t enough.

“Please take our players in exchange for your better players, via a trade that somehow works under the NBA’s salary cap rules.” It’s a lovely concept, if some other team or three would submit to it. ESPN’s Marc Stein and Ohm Youngmisuk tossed the first lob out:

The Brooklyn Nets have begun reaching out to teams to let them know that former All-Stars Deron Williams, Brook Lopez and Joe Johnson are available via trade, ESPN.com has learned.

League sources told ESPN.com that the Nets, off to a disappointing 8-11 start and looking to retool after last season's $190 million roster filled with veterans couldn't advance beyond the second round of the playoffs, have let it be known that they are prepared to move any of those franchise cornerstones in what would likely be separate deals if they came to fruition because of the high salaries each possess.

Right.

We’re not attempting to devalue Stein and Youngmisuk’s work, as the Nets definitely do want to completely reshape the roster. What we’re trying to do here is devalue the work of Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov, and general manager Billy King.

Prokhorov found his perfect GM in King. The former Larry Brown acolyte had previously made a career out of trading one massive contract for another, working under a pound-foolish philosophy in Philadelphia that ultimately proved itself to be penny-foolish as well. Prokhorov promised Nets fans a championship within five years back in 2010, a rather daft maneuver, one that he later doubled down on with his decision to hire King during the 2010 offseason.

Billy King goes after big names, regardless of the substance or contributions they provide. If the NBA had its own version of US Weekly, Billy King would attempt to sign or deal for the cover subject every week. This isn’t to say that former stars like Deron Williams, Kevin Garnett and Joe Johnson haven’t had their merits at some point – Garnett is just a step behind Tim Duncan when it comes to listing the greatest players of their generation – but King’s buy-now-pay-later schemes have never come close to creating a championship contender despite massive resources and that five-year window.

A window that is going to run out at the end of the season, with the Nets on pace for 35 wins and the last seed in the pitiful Eastern Conference playoff bracket. Brooklyn’s player and coach payroll neared the $200 million mark last season once luxury taxes were factored in, and the team’s payroll this season before the luxury tax hit is over $93 million. The team will have to swap its first round draft pick with the improving Atlanta Hawks next June, it owes Boston its first rounders in 2016 and 2018, and it will have to swap picks with Boston in 2017 if the Celtics end up with a better record.

All for a miserable, listless team. One that would seem to want to launch out of the gates in 2014-15 in order to spite former coach Jason Kidd, a hope that shot to bits by the time the team got to work in the season’s first month.

The Nets can’t beat good teams. They’ll do their job against bottom feeders, but by and large this is an offense-first outfit that can’t score, with too-slow players at every position and rotation spot. And they wouldn’t mind it if you’d help them upgrade at every position.

Now, it’s not completely impossible for Billy King to trade his cornerstones. He’s proven, for over a decade, that a trade that seems terrible to just about any other NBA observer feels just fine in Billy King’s head, so it’s more than feasible that King can somehow structure a series of deals that he sees as winners in his own mind. He’s never failed us in that realm.

The problem for King is that the league has changed. In years past there was always a scant series of similarly-terrible general managers that would engage with him and take his mistakes off of his hands in exchange for even heavier millstones. Not only has scouting improved, significantly, in the last decade or so, but teams have gotten smarter with their finances. There aren’t a lot of squads out there that have similar sized-contracts – even a group of medium-sized yearly contracts – to send back to King in exchange for, say, Deron Williams’ final three years and over $63 million.

Basketball analysts are correct in pointing out that no contract is untradeable, often referring to the infamous Gilbert Arenas-for-Rashard Lewis deal from 2010 as proof. The problem with that ongoing assertion is that the league has changed and evolved ten times over in the four years since that swap, and the few remaining millstones only belong to Los Angeles (who made a semi-understandable business, not basketball, decision with Kobe Bryant), the New York Knicks (a previous regime’s desperate gambit on Amar’e Stoudemire, soon to expire), and Brooklyn (Billy King).

Worse for Nets fans is the fact that King has precious little to offer by way of incentive to take on Williams’ deal, Joe Johnson’s deal (two years, over $48 million remaining), or Brook Lopez’s contract (two years, over $32 million). As noted, the Nets don’t have the rights to keep their own earned first round draft pick until 2019, which is absolutely bonkers. Mirza Teletovic is a solid player, but he’s a restricted free agent this summer. Bojan Bogdanovic has a reasonable contract, but he’s been pretty awful this season, and Mason Plumlee seems like the only reason why any team would consider taking on any of the Nets’ heavy-hitters at this point.

Plumlee’s a great athlete and improving player, but he ain’t worth taking on Williams or Johnson at this point. Or even Lopez, who is a fine scorer saddled with a game that feels more and more like an anachronism at this point in the modern-as-tomorrow NBA.

Prokhorov could dismiss Billy King tomorrow and the incoming el jefe would still be saddled with a seemingly immovable roster. There is a chance, however slight, that King could move one of these players for a litany of middling contributors with average contracts – as the Sacramento Kings did when they dumped Chris Webber on King’s Philadelphia 76ers in 2005 – but at this point it genuinely feels as if King’s best move is to just wait this crew out until their contracts expire. Either that, or hope some desperate team decides to use all their cap space this summer or the next and deal for a 30-something Deron Williams in exchange for a conditional draft pick.

That’s a shocking conclusion to the end of a story that was initially penned with championship hopes, but everyone outside of Brooklyn’s front office saw it coming. Deron Williams’ descent into mediocrity wasn’t to be expected, and the championship or bust gambit was intriguing in a weird way, but at no point during any part of King’s reign did anyone spy the Nets as a championship contender following one of his blockbuster deals. Even in the awful East. Jason Kidd was so exasperated by the Nets’ upcoming prospects that he decided to leave his adopted home town to coach the worst team in the NBA last summer.

The Brooklyn Nets have, for years, been playing with their own currency. Now they want other teams to carry the burden of their ridiculous exchange rate. That’s not going to be easy.

News sport : Western Kentucky QB Brandon Doughty given 6th year by NCAA

Western Kentucky QB Brandon Doughty will be back in 2015 after being granted a sixth-year waiver by the NCAA.

The school announced the decision on Wednesday. Doughty was injured in the 2011 and 2012 seasons and threw a combined 25 passes in those two seasons. After redshirting in 2010 he suffered a knee injury in 2011.

"My time at WKU has been very special and I am looking forward to the opportunity to come back for my sixth year to build on what we've started this season," Doughty said in a team statement. "Having to deal with injuries for two seasons was really tough and I never would have made it through without my faith in God and the support from my coaches, teammates and the athletic department staff. The players in that locker room are like brothers to me, and I am blessed to get to go through one more season with them."

This season Doughty has thrown for 4,344 yards and 44 touchdowns. Against Marshall, who WKU beat 67-66 in overtime for the Thundering Herd's first loss of the season, Doughty threw for 491 yards, eight touchdowns and two interceptions.

He threw for 593 yards in a three-OT loss to Middle Tennessee and 569 yards in a win over Bowling Green to start the season.

Western Kentucky finished the regular season 7-5 and plays Central Michigan on December 24 in the Bahamas Bowl.

News sport : Colts mascot absolutely destroys kids in football game

Mascots. Who knew that beneath their colorful plush exterior beats a heart of blackest evil?

The Minnesota Vikings run a "Mascot Challenge" in which the team invites mascots to play local kids in what should be a friendly game of football. Blue, the Indianapolis Colts mascot, showed up, and made it clear he wasn't down with any "friendly competition" nonsense.

(Vine via Rodger Sherman)

As Bleacher Report notes, this wasn't the first time a mascot has gone smash-happy over a bunch of poor sweet innocent little children. Here's the Minnesota Golden Gopher trucking a whole bunch'a young fools at the same event back in 2009:

Blue's antics are reminiscent of the way another onetime Indianapolis resident treated children on a football field:

Now, some people might be upset at the way these kids are getting knocked around, but whatever. We're all for it. Never too early to teach the youngsters a solid life lesson. Namely, your icons are TERRIFYING.

News sport : Hawaii AD Ben Jay resigns, coach Norm Chow retained

Hawaii athletic director Ben Jay announced his resignation on Tuesday just four months after telling the university’s board of regents that he wasn’t sure the football program could survive in the new climate of college athletics.

Jay’s resignation will be effective at the end of the school year in June. Hawaii interim Chancellor Robert Bley a search for a new athletic director would begin in January.

Jay cited family as the reason for his resignation, but he had also failed to help the athletic department overcome a $3 million deficit, which he claimed back in August was due, in part, by the failures of the football program.

"We're going to have to generate more revenue," Jay told Hawaii News Now in August. "There's no doubt about that. We've always had to do that. People want to support football and basketball and baseball and all of our other sports, so it's going to come down to how are we going to get that support financially from our fan base and from all the folks who love UH athletics."

The university has operated in a deficit in 11 of the past 13 years.

Declining attendance at football games had contributed to Hawaii losing money. This season, the Rainbow Warriors averaged 27,451 during its seven home games in a 50,000-seat stadium. The program went 4-9 last season and hasn’t had a winning season since going 10-4 in 2010. Despite the struggles, Jay announced that football coach Norm Chow would be retained. He is 8-29 in three seasons with the program.

Jay was hired to replace Jim Donovan in 2012 after Donovan was scammed out of $200,000 of the university’s money while trying to book a benefit concert with Stevie Wonder.

Baxter left fuming after stalemate

Kaizer Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter gave his team the hairdryer treatment after they allowed Platinum Stars to run circles around them.

|||

Johannesburg – Kaizer Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter gave his team the hairdryer treatment after they allowed Platinum Stars to run circles around them in their 2-2 Premiership draw.

Amakhosi had to come back twice at the Peter Mokaba Stadium to preserve their unbeaten streak in the league. From 15 games, they have won 11 and drawn four.

“I was disappointed with our first half. We gave away two goals and we gave them a few massive chances because we could not pass the ball,” a peeved Baxter said.

“We defended nervously, I thought we were not there in the first-half and it was a waste of time.”

Stars put up a valiant effort against a familiar foe in their fifth encounter of the season. Chiefs had got the better of Dikwena in three matches, while their opponents ousted them from the Telkom Knockout competition on penalties after a goalless draw in the quarterfinals.

Robert Ng'ambi and Eleazar Rodgers struck for the visitors while goals from Siphiwe Tshabalala and Tefu Mashamaite equalised for the log leaders.

Having survived the scare, Baxter admitted it was a great game which could have been clinched by either side.

“Exciting games often have lots of mistakes and action around the goals,” he said.

“We got our goal and had the game where we wanted it. But we gave it back to them. It could have ended up 4-3 for either team.”

Although Chiefs fought back to earn the draw, Baxter said there was still room for improvement from his players.

“We changed the picture of the game but we let it slip about by making some horrible mistakes. We let the initiative go once we got it. I will look at this game as a bad day at the office.”

Having shown great courage to rise to the occasion, Stars coach Allan Freese said victory was there for the taking.

“I thought we had it there for a moment – unlucky for us we didn't,” Freese said.

“I don't think we defended well. To concede those two goals – we should have done better.”

Freese still felt his team showed tremendous character against the best ranked team in the country.

“It was a good game between two sides who know each other well. It's what people would like to see at the stadium – good entertaining football. It was end to end stuff.”

Stars would come back stronger in their next match against Wits on Sunday after an encouraging performance, he said.

“We came away from home to play Chiefs in front of their own supporters and we gave them a tough match. We are happy about that.

“My boys gave it their best so we will take it from there. We know our position on the log and we needed the three points more than Chiefs.”

Chiefs will look to get back to winning ways when they take on Chippa United on Saturday at the Peter Mokaba Stadium. – Sapa

News sport : Is the Outback Bowl Melvin Gordon's final game at Wisconsin?

Will Melvin Gordon's last game as a Wisconsin Badger be against Auburn in the Outback Bowl?

Gordon was on the Dan Patrick Show on Wednesday and was asked about coming back for his final season of eligibility after discussing chemistry class. When Patrick brought up leaving early, Gordon hesitated and started laughing. And then when he was asked if leaving early, going to the Heisman ceremony and playing in the Outback Bowl was official, Gordon replied with a "Yep."

Gordon was eligible for the draft last season after he got a medical redshirt in the 2011 season due to playing in just three games. However, he elected to return to school for 2014 after receiving a second round grade. And his 2015 draft grade will likely be no lower after he's accumulated 2,336 yards and 26 touchdowns in 13 games this season.

He's one of three players invited to the 2014 Heisman Trophy ceremony on Saturday along with Oregon QB Marcus Mariota and Alabama WR Amari Cooper. Mariota will be the likely winner of the award.

Last season, Gordon had 1,609 yards and 12 touchdowns. At one point this season, Gordon took over the career yards-per-carry record from Army's Glenn Davis, who officially holds the mark at 8.26 yards per carry. But after a few games with a lower yards per carry average, Gordon is at a still-incredibly-impressive 7.81 yards per carry.

While we won't go as far as to take Gordon's one-word answer as an official declaration, the decision to leave is the obvious one in his case. His value may never be higher. There's more downside to leaving than there is to staying, especially if Gordon is as close to his degree as he told Patrick.

The Buckeyes trounced Wisconsin 59-0 and Watt, who made a bet with teammate and Ohio State grad John Simon, had to pay the price.

A risky move by Simon because Watt looks really unhappy in this picture. Not sure an angry Watt is ever a good thing.

News sport : Top H.S. recruit Josh Sweat makes committment

Top defensive end Josh Sweat, the 6-foot-five, 240-pound senior who started the year as the nation's top recruit, has kept college recruiters guessing all season. On Wednesday morning, he gave them their answer. Or, to be fair, his mom gave his answer.

As of last week analysts said Sweat had narrowed the field of teams down to five, featuring Florida State, Oregon, Georgia, Virginia Tech and Ohio State.

Wednesday morning it looked like Sweat was going to follow the trend, picking the hat that matched his choice. Instead, he let his mom do the honor.

As soon as she showed off the sweatshirt, Sweat did a Tomahawk chop, then hugged his mom and shook his dad's hand.

Sweat came into his senior year at Oscar Smith (Chesapeake, Va.) as the top recruit in the country. An early-season knee injury lowered his stock slightly, though he is still in the top 5 on some polls.

Rivals.com had him at No. 5 at the end of November but dropped him to No. 31 last week.

Sweat is the sixth player on the Class of 2015 Rivals 100 to verbally commit to play for Jimbo Fisher and the Seminoles next year. He'll be getting a jump start on his future teammates, as he plans to graduate from high school next month and enroll in spring classes at FSU.

News sport : Police reportedly called to disturbance at J.T. Barrett's apartment

Columbus, Ohio, police were reportedly called to an incident at the apartment of Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett on Tuesday.

According to the police report, obtained by WSYX 6 in Columbus, a woman, Alexandria Barrett-Clark, identified as Barrett's girlfriend refused to leave his apartment after he told her to do so. Barrett said she "ran at him and pushed him."

From WSYX 6:

Barrett says Barrett-Clark hit him. In the report, he says he pushed her away in self-defense, which caused her to fall to a bed. Barrett says he again asked her to leave. Again, he says, she refused.

Barrett-Clark says she told Barrett that she would leave in the morning.

She told police that Barrett confronted her in his bedroom and "choked her on the bed." She said Barrett used his forearm to apply pressue to her neck before taking her phone away from her.

Barrett-Clark told police she managed to get away from Barrett and call police.

According to police, both had no visible injuries and refused treatment. No arrests were made.

Barrett is currently recovering from surgery for a broken right ankle he suffered against Michigan in the last week of the regular season. Cardale Jones started for the Buckeyes in the Big Ten Championship Game and thanks to Ohio State's impressive performance in the game, the Buckeyes will play Alabama in the Sugar Bowl on January 1.

Before suffering the broken ankle, Barrett was a contender to be invited to New York for the Heisman Trophy ceremony on Saturday. He finished with 45 total touchdowns, 938 rushing yards and 2.834 passing yards.

Wenger still under loads of pressure

Dissenting voices against Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger have become more vociferous after a poor start to their Premier league campaign.

|||

London - Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey's superb goal in Tuesday's Champions League win could not mask the fact that manager Arsene Wenger is under mounting pressure as the focus returns to their stuttering Premier League campaign.

Club officials blocked unhappy supporters from displaying banners calling for Wenger to be sacked ahead of Arsenal's 4-1 victory at Galatasaray, as the team finished second in their group to qualify for the competition's knockout stages.

Two goals each from Lukas Podolski and Ramsey, whose second was a 30-metre volley that he hailed as his “best” ever goal, secured the win but, with qualification to the last-16 secured before kick off, it is the visit of in-form Newcastle United in the league on Saturday that really matters.

Dissenting voices against Wenger, who has been at the club for 18 years, have become more vociferous as Arsenal have suffered a poor start to their domestic league campaign with the team sixth and level on 23 points with Newcastle after 15 games.

“We have to cope with that (criticism), we are professional footballers. I am a competitive person,” the 65-year-old Frenchman said. “What is important is the next game and responding in a strong way, to play to win the game.”

Arsenal ended a nine-year wait for a trophy by winning the FA Cup last season and supporters had hoped their success would be a springboard for more silverware this term.

Having suffered defeats in the Champions League round of 16 in the previous four seasons, qualification for the same stage this year will not be met with high expectations and their Premier League form remains the main focus for supporters.

Wenger was subjected to a torrent of verbal abuse from fans as he boarded the team bus after their 3-2 league defeat at Stoke City on Saturday and he has called for patience from supporters.

“You expect that everyone is disappointed after that result (at Stoke), but the Premier League is difficult,” Wenger told reporters.

“We want to be judged at the end of the season, not after every single game where it is normal that emotion is always very high. So let us get our stability back defensively and see at the end of the season where we are.” – Reuters

News sport : Michigan's Devin Funchess declares for the NFL draft

Michigan announced on Tuesday that WR Devin Funchess will declare for the 2015 NFL draft.

Funchess was Michigan's leading receiver in 2014. He had 62 catches for 733 yards and four touchdowns while wearing the No. 1 jersey.

"I would like to thank my family, coaches and teammates for their support," Funchess said in a Michigan statement. "It's always been a dream of mine to play in the NFL, and I am prepared to take the next step in my journey.

"I want to personally thank Coach Hoke and his staff. I've learned life and character lessons from them, and they have helped me become a better person and man. I love Michigan. From the former players to the fans, it's a special place. The opportunity to play in the Big House in front of 100,000 strong each week, those are memories that will last with me forever. It's been an honor to strap on the winged helmet for three years with my teammates, and I will always bleed maize and blue."

Funchess was selected to the all-Big Ten second team by the league's coaches. At 6-5, 230, Funchess is listed at approximately the same height and weight as former Texas A&M WR Mike Evans and former Florida State WR Kelvin Benjamin. Both receivers were first round picks in the 2014 NFL draft.

In 2013, Funchess was officially listed as a tight end and had 748 receiving yards, the most in Michigan history for a player at the position and was also a second-team all-Big Ten coaches' team selection.
