Despite a second straight nine-loss season (with a tenth possibly on the way on Saturday against TCU), Iowa State athletic director offered a vote of confidence for head coach Paul Rhoads on Monday.
Rhoads’ Cyclones teams have mustered just five wins over the past two seasons, but Pollard believes he can turn it around.
"It's a place that you've got to have a chip on your shoulder and you've got to try to do something that others maybe are afraid to do or couldn't do or don't want to try to do," Pollard said, per the Des Moines Register. “That's what inspires all of us to be here, and it's to climb a mountain that others have never gotten to the top. I look forward to continuing that journey with coach Rhoads and hopefully getting there."
The Cyclones are on the verge of going winless in the Big 12, unless they can pull off a shocker against No. 5 TCU in the season finale of Rhoads’ sixth season as head coach on Saturday.
Rhoads’ team has seen many starters go down with season-ending injuries this season. Pollard acknowledged that those setbacks must be considered when looking at the difficulties of the 2014 season.
“In the end, we’ve got to get better,” Pollard said. “It’s a game of results. Coach knows that, I know that, everybody knows that. But, we’re closer to it than I think we’re further away, and we look forward to continuing to climb that mountain.”
Iowa State has reached three bowl games in Rhoads’ tenure and the team’s overall record in his six seasons is 29-45.
Earlier in the season, Pollard criticized Big 12 officials while sticking up for Rhoads and the football team after a few controversial calls in the Cyclones’ loss to Oklahoma State. He was fined $25,000 for his comments.
“We lost games as a result of calls that either we were apologized for or the media certainly felt we should have been apologized to,” Pollard said Oct. 4. “We can’t get that back. That ends careers for football coaches, ADs and presidents and so something’s got to be done. I don’t know what it is, but there needs to be more accountability on what happens in certain situations.”
