Ex-Stars ace wins final for SuperSport

You’d think Thuso Phala has forgotten all he owes to the Stars such was his performance against them.

|||

Johannesburg –Talk about biting the hand that fed you. Thuso Phala owes just about everything he knows about football to the Stars. It is the club that first gave him a taste of the game at professional level, having played at the club in two spells that spanned the side’s history as first Silver Stars and now Platinum Stars.

Not only did he earn his spurs at the club, but even his mother served the club for many years, the Phala household literally earning their livelihood at Stars.

You’d have sworn Phala had forgotten all this here yesterday, such was his inspired performance which saw SuperSport usurp Dikwena as Telkom Knockout champions.

His stunning goal will no doubt remain etched in the memory of this year’s tournament, the winger’s slaloming run past two defenders before slotting home a sweetly-struck shot past Siyabonga Mpontshane.

But he did more than just score that goal, Phala having won the penalty that gave Matsatsantsa a 2-1 lead via Clayton Daniels’ conversion, the captain also netting the equaliser from the spot in the first half.

He had said before the match that he would put his emotions aside to help his new club to silverware, and you knew he meant business when he created the match’s first chance as early as the fourth minute.

Using his pace and skill, he beat Luvolwethu Mpeta to deliver a cross Mpontshane failed to handle only for Lebogang Manyama to spill it. Confident he had the beating of his marker Mpeta, Phala toyed with the Stars right-back and continuously delivering dangerous crosses.

Typical of a cup final though, this one could so easily have gone the other way and Stars will feel they should have wrapped it up at the end of the first half of extra time.

In a stanza that produced a crazy three minutes which saw first Daniels put SuperSport ahead with his second penalty before Mogakolodi Ngele equalised with a superb half-volley, Eleazar Rodgers had a chance to put Stars ahead. But from a spot-kick gained after Thabo Moloi handled in the box, the lanky striker was twice denied by Ronwen Williams.

The young goalkeeper stopped Rodgers’ first attempt and then leapt back into action to again push the ball out when the Capetonian took a second bite from the rebound.

It was the turning point of the game, though it appeared the match could well be decided via a shoot-out.

But Phala received the ball on the right and, as he had done all day, ran at Mpeta, whom he left for dead before rendering Thabiso Semenya redundant and shoot into the net.

It was a superb goal, worthy of a final that seesawed from brilliant to tepid between halves – the first one being played at a high intensity and the second like a Sunday kick-about.

Still, there were chances even during this half that could have decided the match before the extended time.

Before the goals, Dove Wome forced a splendid save out of Mpont-shane with a bullet-like shot from the edge of the box on 10 minutes and, from the resultant corner, Manyama’s low shot was cleared off the line with the Stars keeper nowhere.

Stars’ first chance came on 13 minutes when Ronwen Williams got off his line and blasted the ball against Rodgers in an attempted clearance. Ng’ambi lobbed towards goal but Williams was quick to run back and fist out for a corner.

SuperSport had a seemingly legitimate penalty appeal turned down on 19 minutes after a brilliant interchanging of passes between Wome and Sibusiso Khumalo ended with the latter being hacked in the box.

And when ref Thando Ndzanzeka gave them a spot-kick that was never on, Daniels equalised. It looked as though the ref was making up for his initial error, though.

Stars had taken the lead through Ng’ambi, the Malawian profiting from some persistent play by Rodgers, who chased the ball on the far left, kept it in play and delivered for Ndumiso Mabena to set up the scorer. Ng’ambi shot the ball low and hard past the diving Williams.

Then extra time came, producing those crazy three minutes before Phala put a sword through his former club’s hearts to give joy to Matsatsantsa. – Sunday Independent

News sport : Boise State has clear path to represent Group of Five in CFP bowl

Nov 29, 2014; Boise, ID, USA; Boise State Broncos running back Jay Ajayi (27) scores his second touchdown of the first half against the Utah State Aggies at Albertsons Stadium. (Brian Losness-USA TODAY Sports ) Not only did Boise State clinch a spot in the Mountain West Championship game with a 50-19 win over Utah State on Saturday night, but the Broncos also have a clear path to represent the Group of Five in a College Football Playoff-affiliated bowl game.

Boise’s win over the Aggies gives the Broncos the 2014 Mountain Division crown, scheduling a showdown with West Division champions Fresno State in next Saturday night’s conference title game in Boise.

The Broncos used a power running game with Jay Ajayi to overwhelm the Aggies early on. Boise scored on its first three offensive drives of the first quarter – two of which culminated in Ajayi touchdown runs.

Ajayi added another score in the second quarter, while senior quarterback Grant Hedrick tossed his second touchdown of the half to Thomas Sperbeck to give the Broncos a 34-12 halftime lead.

Boise continued to pound the rock with Ajayi throughout the second half, taking time off the clock while its defense completely shut down Utah State. Ajayi, a 6-foot, 216-pound junior, ran for a career-high 229 yards and five touchdowns on 27 carries.

The win improved Boise’s record to 10-2 on the season. Boise was No. 22 in the latest College Football Playoff rankings and could see a bump after Saturday night’s dominant performance. With Marshall, the only other Group of Five team to crack the Top 25, losing its first game of the season to Western Kentucky, Boise looks to be the top team from outside the power five conferences in the eyes of the College Football Committee members.

Of course, the top-ranked team from the Group of Five (AAC, C-USA, MAC, MWC and Sun Belt) is guaranteed a spot in one of the six CFP bowls. As long as Boise takes care of business against 6-6 Fresno, the Broncos look like the obvious choice.

Fresno won its last three games of the regular season to clinch the MWC’s West Division and bowl eligibility. Boise defeated Fresno 37-27 on Oct. 17. There’s no reason to think the Broncos won’t do it again on a bigger stage with the conference title on the line.

News sport : Kansas State got an interception after a Kansas player kicked the ball (Video)

While Kansas' football futility has become predictable, the ways in which that futility is achieved have not become predictable.

Saturday, the Jayhawks were blown out by in-state rival Kansas State 51-13. But Kansas at least provided us some entertainment with this Kansas State interception. Quarterback Michael Cummings threw a deep pass to Rodriguez Coleman who somehow kicked the ball as he was jumping for it. The ball skied into the air and was intercepted by Randall Evans.

Last week, Kansas punter Trevor Pardula had an issue trying to recover a bad punt snap. Oh, and there was that whole "giving up the most rushing yards to a single player" thing in trying to stop running back Samaje Perine.

The Jayhawks haven't beaten the Wildcats in football since 2008. Kansas finishes the year at 3-9, though it's guaranteed not to be last in the Big 12 thanks to a win over Iowa State. And hey, basketball season has now officially arrived in Lawrence, Kan.

News sport : Auburn had two simultaneous possession catches on one drive (GIFs)

An Auburn drive in the third quarter of Saturday's game against Alabama had two catches that were ruled completions because of the simultaneous possession rule.

If a receiver and a defensive back both have possession of the football, the tie goes to the offensive player. The first catch, as Auburn was leading 33-27, was by Duke Williams, who held on to the ball for a third-down conversion as he was hit and had his knees bent awkwardly while wrestling with Landon Collins for possession.

The second was crazier. Quan Bray ran a deep route on the sidelines and was covered closely by Bradley Sylve. Sylve was between Bray and the sidelines and as the ball hit Bray's arms and he tumbled out of bounds, Sylve had the ball too.

While you could make the argument that Sylve had more possession than Bray did while Bray's feet were inbounds, the catch was ruled to be simultaneous possession on the field. It was reviewed -- almost too late, as Auburn appeared to have run the next play before officials were signaled for the replay -- but as you can see, there was no convincing evidence either way to overturn the call on the field.

The possession turned into a field goal for Auburn to make it a 36-27 game.

News sport : Baylor's close win against Texas Tech won't help its CFP cause

The College Football Playoff committee already didn’t hold Baylor in the highest regard compared to some of the other teams in the top 7 of the rankings and the Bears’ 48-46 win against Texas Tech isn’t going to do ithem any favors.

Several times throughout the release of the playoff rankings, committee chairman Jeff Long has noted that Baylor’s schedule was not comparable to that of, say, No. 5 TCU. That’s why Baylor has failed to leapfrog TCU in the rankings despite a win against the Horned Frogs earlier in the season.

The one thing that could have pushed the Bears over the TCU hump was impressive wins to end their schedule. However, they squandered a 42-17 third-quarter lead and gave up the potential tying touchdown with 1:42 remaining. Had Tech been able to convert its two-point try, the game likely would have gone to overtime.

That’s a stark contrast to what TCU did to the Red Raiders on Oct. 25 — an 82-27 Horned Frog victory — and a contrast to what the Horned Frogs were able to do against a tough Texas defense on Thursday (a 48-10 win). Moreover, Texas is a bowl team; Texas Tech came into Saturday’s game with just two conference wins against the two teams worse than it. All but one of the Red Raiders other conference losses this season were by double digits.

TCU knows all too well how struggling against a bad opponent can hurt in the playoff rankings. When it beat Kansas by just four points a couple weeks ago, it dropped out of the top 4 and has yet to get back in.

Now, this doesn’t mean Baylor won’t move up in the standings this week, especially with Mississippi State’s loss. But it’s made jumping TCU that much more difficult especially when the Bears needed to impress a committee that had yet to be impressed by their resume so far.

Baylor probably will have to have a superior effort against Kansas State to even get close to TCU and that could be difficult if quarterback Bryce Petty isn’t able to play. Petty was knocked out of Saturday’s game with a mild concussion. Backup Seth Russell came in and performed well, but the Bears need Petty in the lineup if they're going to beat the Wildcats and make their best pitch for a spot in the playoff.

News sport : Wisconsin heads to Big Ten Championship with win over Minnesota

Nov 29, 2014; Madison, WI, USA; Wisconsin Badgers running back Melvin Gordon (25) celebrates with the Paul Bunyan Axe following the game against the Minnesota Golden Gophers at Camp Randall Stadium. Wisconsin won 34-24. (Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports) Wisconsin fell behind early, but stuck to its game-plan.

It paid off, and now the No. 14 Badgers are headed to the Big Ten Championship Game following a 34-24 home win over No. 18 Minnesota.

A Wisconsin muffed punt and the strong ground game of senior running back David Cobb allowed the Gophers to jump out to an early 17-3 lead, but the Badgers kept their cool. Riding the rushing attack of Heisman favorite Melvin Gordon and the connection between quarterback Joel Stave and wideout Alex Erickson, the Badgers worked their way back in to the game.

First, Stave looked Erickson’s way and hit the former walk-on for a 70-yard gain. Three plays later, Stave found Gordon out of the backfield on third-and-goal to cut Minnesota’s lead to 17-10.

It looked like Minnesota would increase its lead before halftime on its ensuing possession, but the exchange between quarterback Mitch Leidner and Cobb went awry on a read option, resulting in a fumble at the Wisconsin 30-yard-line with 18 seconds to go in the half.

The usually conservative Badgers offense then went back to the air. Stave hit Erickson (5 catches, 160 yards) on completions of 35 and 14 yards, setting up a successful 38-yard Rafael Gaglianone field goal to decrease the deficit to 17-13 at halftime.

The second half was more of the same for Wisconsin. The Badgers defense tightened up against the Gopher ground game, while Gordon and sophomore Corey Clement went to work. The Badgers took a lead when Clement (7 rushes, 89 yards, 1 TD) took a first down carry 28 yards for a score with 6:20 to go in the third.

As the Wisconsin defense continued to force punts, Wisconsin kept up its hot ground attack early in the fourth. Its first drive in the final frame went like this: Gordon for eight yards, Gordon for 24, Clement for five. Clement for 31. Gordon one-yard score. Wisconsin 27-17 lead.

The Gophers did not go quietly, however. Leidner (95 pass yards, 54 rush yards, two rushing scores) and Cobb (25 rushes for 118 yards and a TD), who set a school single-season rushing record, quickly worked their way down the field. A Leidner two-yard plunge made it 27-24 Wisconsin with 7:32 to go.

But Wisconsin stuck to its money maker: the ground game. Gordon reeled off three nice runs, Stave hit Erickson for 31 yards and Clement added another good run to get the Badgers deep into Minnesota territory. Instead of letting the air out of the ball and taking some time off the clock, Stave (11-of-18, 215 yards, 2 TDs) went to the air and found sophomore Robert Wheelwright for his first catch of the season – a game-sealing 17-yard touchdown with 4:41 left in regulation.

From then on out, except for a Gordon ankle injury that did not appear to be serious, the game came to an uneventful conclusion.

Now, the Badgers (10-2, 7-1 Big Ten) head into Saturday’s Big Ten title game against a J.T. Barrett-less Ohio State with a major chance to win the league and play in a major bowl game. As long as Gordon, who went for 151 yards to bring his season total to a Big Ten record 2,260 yards, is healthy, the Badgers could be considered favorites against the Buckeyes next Saturday night in Indianapolis.

For Minnesota (8-4, 5-3 Big Ten), to be in the position to win the Big Ten West division is a major step forward for Jerry Kill’s program. It’s certainly a disappointing ending, especially after jumping out to a nice lead, but Kill’s program is on the rise and should represent the conference well in a bowl game.

News sport : Chad Morris says he hasn't agreed to anything with SMU

Clemson offensive coordinator Chad Morris has emerged as the likely candidate for SMU's vacant head coaching position and said Saturday after Clemson's win over South Carolina that he hadn't agreed to anything with the school.

"I have not agreed to anything with SMU," Morris said via TigerIllustrated.com.

He said when the time came, something would be announced.

"When the time comes, we'll come out and say what needs to be said," Morris said. "For now, we're going to enjoy the night and I appreciate y'all respecting that."

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney said he wouldn't stand in the way of Morris taking a head coaching job that he wanted.

"If Chad has an opportunity and it's something he wants to do and feels good about, I wish him nothing but the best," Swinney said. "He's helped us and we've helped him. Nobody would be happier for him than me."

SMU has one game remaining this season (against UConn) and is 0-11. After losing 35-9 to Houston on Friday, the Mustangs have been outscored, on average, 43-10 this season.

Morris is from Edgewood, Tex., and went to Texas A&M. He coached at Lake Travis High School in Austin before coaching at Tulsa for a season before becoming Clemson's offensive coordinator in 2011.

SMU coach June Jones resigned after the second game of the season and defensive coordinator Tom Mason has served as the interim coach.

News sport : Ole Miss ends Mississippi State's SEC West hopes

A week after Ole Miss' SEC West dreams disappeared, the Rebels ended the division hopes of their in-state rivals by beating Mississippi State 31-17 on Saturday.

And the Bulldogs' College Football Playoff hopes are likely kaput too.

After Mississippi State took a 10-7 lead early in the third quarter, Ole Miss assumed control and rattled off 17 straight points to make it 24-10. The touchdown that opened a 14-point lead was a nifty cutback run from Jaylen Walton that went 91-yards and had the chance to demoralize Mississippi State.

However, the Bulldogs bounced back and cut the lead to 24-17 with a touchdown pass from Dak Prescott to De'Runnya Wilson. Though Ole Miss quickly got the lead back to two possessions when Jordan Wilkins threw a halfback pass to Cody Core for the final points of the game.

Soon after the game was over, Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze got a Gatorade bath while attempting to kiss his wife, Jill.

Ole Miss was victorious on the strength of its defense, which held Mississippi State to less than four yards a carry. Bo Wallace, who was injured against Arkansas, was 13-30 for 296 yards, but the yardage statistics were inflated because of two long catch and runs by Rebel receivers.

When Ole Miss was shut out at Arkansas, the loss was the Rebels' third conference loss of the season and made winning the West impossible. Now, with Mississippi State at two losses, the Bulldogs are also eliminated as MSU loses the tiebreaker to Alabama if the Tide lose to Auburn later Saturday night. It means Alabama will face Missouri next Saturday in Atlanta for the SEC Championship.

And that since TCU, Baylor and Ohio State still all have one loss, Mississippi State is going to need some serious help to sniff the College Football Playoff now that its regular season is officially over.

At best, the Bulldogs will be seventh in the rankings on Tuesday, but there's a chance they could be usurped by Michigan State, Arizona and Kansas State, the latter of two who have big games on the schedule remaining to move up even further.

News sport : Jaylen Walton made a great 91-yard TD run against Mississippi State (GIF)

Jaylen Walton might have put Mississippi State's College Football Playoff hopes on ice.

Shortly after MSU punted to Ole Miss in the third quarter on Saturday, Walton ran to the right and reversed field to his left. He found a seam and was off to the races for a 91-yard touchdown run.

The run gave Ole Miss a 24-10 lead with a little more than a quarter remaining in the game. If Mississippi State loses, the Bulldogs are eliminated from contention in the SEC West and likely eliminated from any chance of playing in the College Football Playoff as three teams below MSU in the rankings only have one loss. A loss in the Egg Bowl would be MSU's second of the season.

News sport : Deshaun Watson played against South Carolina with torn ACL

Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson played against South Carolina on Saturday with a torn ACL.

Watson suffered a left knee injury against Georgia Tech on November 15 but the school said that he suffered a bone bruise and sprained LCL. The torn ACL, according to coach Dabo Swinney, happened in preparation for Clemson's game against Georgia State on November 22 as Watson went down during a drill in practice.

An MRI the next day revealed a torn ACL. Watson played in the win over South Carolina with a brace on his left knee.

"That brace was his ACL in this game," Swinney said via TigerIllustrated.com.

Watson was 14-19 for 269 yards and two touchdowns against the Gamecocks. He also had two rushing touchdowns on five carries.

Swinney also said the plan is for Watson, who also suffered a broken bone in his hand earlier in the season, to play in the Tigers' bowl game before he has surgery. The month layoff between games will allow Watson's LCL to heal fully but isn't nearly enough time for the ACL to heal.

It's also fair to question whether or not Watson should have been playing against South Carolina in the first place. Yes, playing with a torn ACL is uncommon but not unheard of, however, Watson, a freshman, has been Clemson's most dynamic player and will be for two or three more years. While he may not be able to do more damage to the ACL, he's apparently suffered injuries to two of the three main ligaments in his knee in a short timeframe.

The succeeding instability makes him a less effective and explosive player and any overcompensation can increase the risk of further injury.

But from Watson's perspective, he clearly wanted to play. And from Clemson's, well, the offense with a hobbled Watson is still much better than it is with Cole Stoudt under center. The difference in Clemson's offense with the two quarterbacks is incredibly clear, and the team clearly felt Watson gave it the best chance to win.

And ultimately, Clemson was right as the Tigers beat the Gamecocks for the first time since 2008. And hopefully Watson won't be injured further before the ACL is fixed after the season.

News sport : Ohio State beats Michigan, but Barrett injury hurts playoff hopes

Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett acknowledges fans as he is driven from the field after an injury in the fourth quarter of an NCAA college football game Saturday, Nov. 29, 2014, in Columbus, Ohio. Ohio State beat Michigan 42-28. (AP Photo/Jay LaPrete) Ohio State beat bitter rival Michigan at home on Saturday afternoon, but it took a major hit to its College Football Playoff hopes.

On the Buckeyes' first play of the fourth quarter, star redshirt freshman quarterback J.T. Barrett was tackled awkwardly from behind and suffered a severe lower leg injury. The Heisman candidate had an air cast applied and he was carted off the field.

Ohio State was clinging on to a 28-21 lead against a resilient Michigan squad when Barrett went down. With sophomore Cardale Jones in at quarterback, the Buckeyes managed to pull out a 42-28 thanks to a 46-yard Ezekiel Elliott touchdown run on a fourth-and-one play with under five minutes to go. Later on, a 33-yard fumble return for touchdown by Darron Lee added some style points for the Buckeyes and put the game out of reach.

Ultimately, a really solid win for the Buckeyes will be completely overshadowed by Barrett’s injury.

Early reports indicate that the injury is one that would require several months of recovery.

With that said, Barrett will likely miss next Saturday’s Big Ten Championship Game against the winner of the Minnesota-Wisconsin game. Beyond that, it does not seem likely that Barrett could return for a bowl game in late December or early January.

With Barrett out, Jones – who started the year third on the Buckeyes’ depth chart – assumes the starting role. Coming into Saturday’s game, the 6-foot-5, 250-pound Jones attempted only 16 passes in his career. He attempted three more against the Wolverines, completing two for just seven yards.

Over the past few years, he has seen plenty of garbage time running the read option in relief of Barrett or Braxton Miller, and against Michigan he rushed twice for 18 yards. Jones is nowhere near as shifty as Barrett, but he can run people over and has accumulated 316 yards and one touchdown on 41 carries in his career.

Even if Jones is able to lead the Buckeyes to a Big Ten title next weekend, the selection committee can factor in the injury of a significant player when filling out its rankings.

The selection committee protocol lists “other relevant factors such as key injuries that may have affected a team’s performance during the season or likely will affect its postseason performance” as a factor it can consider when ranking teams.

Barrett, who threw for 2,658 yards, 33 touchdowns and 10 interceptions while running for 849 yards and nine more scores entering Saturday, certainly fits that criteria.

News sport : Georgia Tech beats Georgia 30-24 in OT

Georgia Tech beat Georgia for the first time since 2008 on Saturday with a 30-24 overtime win.

The Yellow Jackets sent it to overtime after a 53-yard field goal by Harrison Butker that barely cleared the crossbar. And by barely, we mean that if the field goal was from 54 yards, it might not have been good.

Georgia Tech got the ball to start overtime and Zach Laskey scored on a two-yard run but Butker's extra point was blocked, the second kick of his that was blocked. So because of the miss, Georgia just needed to score a touchdown and get the extra point for the win.

However, Hutson Mason was intercepted by D.J. White. Mason thought he had Malcolm Mitchell on a slant, but White jumped the route and picked off the pass to clinch the win.

Mason found Mitchell for a touchdown and a 24-21 lead with 18 seconds left in regulation on fourth down. The Bulldogs had gotten the ball to get the go-ahead score with 2:41 left after Georgia Tech quarterback Justin Thomas fumbled while attempting a pump fake.

Thomas fumbled as the Yellow Jackets were simply trying to run out the clock after taking a 21-17 lead and recovering the ensuing kickoff. Tech pooch-kicked to prevent a long return but no one from Georgia took the initiative to field the ball and Tech picked it up off the bounce.

Oh, the game also featured three fumbles inside the one-yard-line, including a Thomas fumble that was returned 99 yards for a touchdown by Georgia's Damian Swann. Georgia Tech blocked a Georgia field goal, too.

The win gives Georgia Tech 10 wins and a boost heading into next Saturday's ACC Championship Game against Florida State. The loss means Georgia finishes the regular season at 9-3. The Bulldogs were eliminated from contention for the SEC Championship Game on Friday with Missouri's win. Had Arkansas beaten the Tigers, Georgia would have played either Alabama or Mississippi State next Saturday in Atlanta for the SEC title.

News sport : Ohio State QB J.T. Barrett leaves game with injury

Nov 29, 2014; Columbus, OH, USA; Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback J.T. Barrett (16) is taken from the field after an injury against the Michigan Wolverines at Ohio Stadium. (Greg Bartram-USA TODAY Sports) It appears that the season of Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett has been cut short by injury.

With the No. 6 Buckeyes leading 28-21 early in the fourth quarter against rival Michigan, the Heisman Trophy candidate went down with a gruesome-looking injury to his lower right leg. Barrett was tackled from behind and his lower leg was caught underneath the defender as he was pulled to the ground awkwardly.

Barrett stayed down on the field for several minutes as an air cast was applied to his injured leg. The redshirt freshman was then carted off the field and into the locker room for further evaluation.

Barrett took over as Ohio State’s starter after senior Braxton Miller suffered a season-ending shoulder injury in preseason camp. He started the season off slow, but has been one of the nation’s best quarterbacks over the last few months.

Before leaving the game, Barrett threw for 176 yards and a touchdown while also running for 89 yards and two more scores. Entering Saturday’s game, Barrett threw for 2,658 yards, 33 touchdowns and 10 interceptions while running for 849 yards and nine more scores.

With Barrett sidelined, sophomore Cardale Jones – who started the season as the team’s third-string quarterback – now looks to be the man under center for the Buckeyes moving forward.

News sport : Georgia's Damian Swann returns fumble 99 yards for TD (GIF)

Georgia Tech's Justin Thomas might have scored a touchdown. But if he did, the officials didn't see it.

Thomas attempted to run the ball in from two yards out in the third quarter against Georgia on Saturday but as he was swallowed up by Georgia's defense, Damian Swann ripped the ball from his arms and returned it 99 yards for a touchdown.

It's inconclusive if Thomas actually got into the end zone or if he was down at all when the ball was ripped out, but it's apparent that he had the ball taken from his grasp after his forward progress had been stopped. However, no whistles were blown and the play continued until Swann scored.

The touchdown was an incredible swing in the game. If Thomas would have scored, Georgia Tech would have taken a 14-7 lead. Instead, the Bulldogs grabbed the lead by a score.

It was also the game's third goal-line fumble. Before Georgia Tech coughed it up near the end zone, Georgia's Nick Chubb and Sony Michel each fumbled.

News sport : Penn State players honor injured teammates on senior day (Photo)

Though they cannot suit up due to injury, the numbers of Penn State seniors Ryan Keiser and Zach Zwinak will be worn Saturday afternoon for senior day at Beaver Stadium.

Junior cornerback Jordan Lucas will wear Keiser’s No. 23, while senior running back Bill Belton will wear Zwinak’s No. 28 when the 6-5 Nittany Lions host No. 10 Michigan State (9-2) at 3:30 p.m. ET.

Keiser, a safety who went from walk-on to team captain, fractured a rib during practice leading up to Penn State’s game against Ohio State on Oct. 25. That rib fracture led to a serious bowel injury that kept him in intensive care for weeks.

Zwinak, a fellow senior running back, broke his ankle on the opening kickoff of the Penn State-Ohio State game. He is 15th on Penn State’s career rushing list with 2,108 yards and is tied for tenth in school history with 11 100-yard rushing games.

Similarly in 2012, Penn State linebacker Gerald Hodges honored fellow senior linebacker Michael Mauti on Senior Day by wearing his No. 42. Additionally, the entire team wore No. 42 decals on their helmets to honor Mauti.

Both Keiser and Zwinak will be on hand to be honored along with 15 other PSU seniors before the game.
