Good behaviour clause for Mario

Maverick striker Mario Balotelli will have a good behaviour clause inserted into his contract with AC Milan.

Milan - Maverick striker Mario Balotelli will have a good behaviour clause inserted into his contract with AC Milan, banning extravagant haircuts and clothing and committing him to a healthy lifestyle.

Italian sports daily Gazzetta dello Sport said on Wednesday that the club's chief executive Adriano Galliani had based the clause on regulations which are applied to people who serve in the Italian air force.

The 25-year-old, repeatedly criticised for his poor work rate, is set to return to Milan just one year after leaving for Liverpool, where he had a dismal season.

He underwent a medical in Milan on Tuesday ahead of an unexpected loan move, although the deal has not yet been officially confirmed.

According to Gazzetta, Balotelli must not damage the image of the club and his Twitter, Facebook and Instagram posts will be closely monitored.

He will be banned from extravagant haircuts and clothing, from smoking and from visiting night clubs and must turn up on time from training. His drinking will also be limited.

Balotelli's first spell at Milan was relatively successful and uneventful with a respectable scoring rate although there were some misdemeanors.

He lost his temper in front of the cameras after his performance in was criticised by Italian television pundits, telling his interviewers that they did not understand football and throwing his microphone down.

He was also booked for making a vulgar gesture at Cagliari supporters, served two three-match bans and was caught smoking in the toilet of a train by a ticket collector.

However, these incidents paled in comparison to some of his antics at Manchester City earlier in his career, where he famously set fire to his house after letting off fireworks in his bathroom. – Reuters

Spurs second bid for Berahino rejected

West Bromwich Albion have rejected a second bid from Tottenham Hotspur for unsettled English striker Saido Berahino.

|||

West Bromwich Albion have rejected a second bid from Tottenham Hotspur, reportedly in the region of 22 million pounds ($18.8 million), for unsettled English striker Saido Berahino, according to a statement on the club website.

West Brom said on Tuesday that they had rejected a written transfer request from the 22-year-old, who manager Tony Pulis dropped for the 3-2 home defeat against Chelsea on Sunday, saying he was not in the right frame of mind to play.

Berahino was also left out of Pulis' squad for Tuesday's League Cup win over Port Vale.

“Our position remains unchanged. The sale of this player is not on our agenda,” Baggies' chairman Jeremy Peace said in a brief statement on the club's website (www.wba.co.uk) that confirmed the rejection of the second bid from Spurs.

Tottenham's pursuit of the striker, who is contracted to West Brom until the summer of 2017 and scored 20 goals in all competitions last season, has led Pulis to criticise the transfer window being left open after the start of the season.

“I just think the transfer window should close.

“It just takes everything away from what we're here for and that's the football. So close the transfer window and let the season start and then everyone can concentrate on the season,” the manager had said on Sunday.

Tottenham, who signed Cameroonian forward Clinton N'Jie from French side Lyon on August 14, have been in the hunt for another striker to ease the burden on England international Harry Kane.

Spurs have sold Spaniard Roberto Soldado to Villarreal after the forward scored just seven goals in 52 league appearances since joining in 2013, and manager Mauricio Pochettino's only other striking option is the out-of-favour Emmanuel Adebayor, who has not featured for the club this season. – Reuters

Fellaini can solve scoring issues - LVG

Marouane Fellaini can be the solution to Manchester United's goal-scoring problems, manager Louis van Gaal suggested.

|||

Marouane Fellaini can be the solution to Manchester United's goal-scoring problems, manager Louis van Gaal suggested on Tuesday, revealing that he will be used predominantly in attacking positions this season.

The gangly Belgian international's valuable injury-time header gave United a 3-1 win against his countrymen Club Brugge in last week's Champions League play-off round first leg and the 27-year-old is pushing for a starting berth in Wednesday's return match in Bruges.

That result aside, United have struggled for goals this season, scoring only two in their three Premier League matches to date, and Van Gaal believes that Fellaini can help address the matter.

“He can play in a nine position and a 10, but he can also play six and eight,” Van Gaal told his pre-match press conference at the Jan Breydel Stadium.

“But this year he shall play more at 10 and nine than six and eight because there we have other players.”

United had a number of options up front last season, but the departures of Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao have left Wayne Rooney to plough a lone furrow in attack, while the midfield is even more well furnished following the arrivals of Morgan Schneiderlin and Bastian Schweinsteiger.

Fellaini struggled as a central midfielder in his debut campaign under David Moyes -- his former manager at Everton -- in 2013-14, but scored some vital goals last season after being moved further forward by Van Gaal.

“In the past I played number 10 and number nine sometimes, when I have to help the team, so I can play there and I can help my team-mates and my team,” Fellaini said.

“For me it's not important where I play. The most important (thing) is to win the game. Of course it's different to play midfield and striker or number 10, but I enjoy all the positions I can play.”

He added: “Everyone knows my first season was difficult, but now it's the past, so now I look forward. Last year I did quite well and I want to continue like that.

“I know my team-mates, the manager and the philosophy of the manager, so I'm just looking to do well and score some goals.”

Fellaini's first-leg goal, set up by new signing Memphis Depay, who had earlier scored a brace, makes United strong favourites to reach the group stage after a first season out of the tournament in 19 years.

It is 10 years since Club Brugge played in the group phase and 20 since Van Gaal led a young Ajax team to Champions League glory against AC Milan, illustrating the difficulties that teams from Belgium and the Netherlands face when trying to compete with the giants of England, Spain and Germany.

But Van Gaal, who played in Belgium with Royal Antwerp, believes the blend of youth and experience he concocted at Ajax – and is trying to replicate at Old Trafford – can help Europe's lesser lights glow again.

“I think these teams still have something to say in Europe,” he said.

“I'm not optimistic, because the gap is big, but you have to believe in it. That's why I believe in youth education.

“When you see how many young players Manchester United have and (who) play – we are starting with (Luke) Shaw, then Depay, (Adnan) Januzaj, then (Jesse) Lingard, (Paddy) McNair, they are all playing in this squad.

“Sometimes they shall play more matches. It depends also what happens in the transfer period. But we are starting to make a mixture.

“I think it's always important to make a mix of youth players and older players. And you can do that in the Netherlands and also in Brugge.”

Asked if United could win the Champions League with an Ajax-style blend of ages, he replied: “Yes, I believe in that. I believe more in a mix than players only from 27 to 34.” – AFP

Stones in bid to force transfer

Everton defender John Stones has handed in a transfer request in an attempt to persuade his club to sell him to Chelsea, according to reports.

|||

Everton defender John Stones has handed in a transfer request in an attempt to persuade his club to sell him to Chelsea, according to reports on Tuesday.

Stones is Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho's top target as he seeks to bolster his defensive options, but Everton have rejected three offers for the England international and he has now taken matters into his own hands.

After Chelsea's latest bid of £30 million ($47 million) was snubbed by the Goodison Park outfit, Stones is widely reported to have formally expressed his desire to leave before training on Tuesday.

However, Everton have been resolute in their determination to hang on to the 21-year-old and manager Roberto Martinez has insisted throughout the saga the centre-back is not for sale.

Martinez refused to even discuss what the club's response would be should the player hand in a transfer request when he was asked about it on Tuesday.

“There is nothing to comment on that,” he said.

“Once more, it is always the same question and always the same answer.

“The only thing that matters now is the game we have in front of us. There is nothing to announce or discuss.

“I know it is your job to keep asking the same question and unfortunately it is my job in this case to always give you the same answer.”

But despite Martinez's determination to keep Stones, who joined Everton from Barnsley for £3 million in January 2013, the youngster is convinced he can persuade the club to sell him before the September 1 transfer deadline.

If he does go to the Premier League champions, Stones will add much-needed depth to Chelsea's central defence after the struggles of John Terry and Gary Cahill this season.

Terry was sent off in Sunday's win at West Bromwich Albion after being substituted during Chelsea's 3-0 defeat at Manchester City. – AFP

Valencia beat Monaco in CL play-offs

Spain became the first country to have five teams in the Champions League group stage in one season after Valencia squeezed past Monaco 4-3 on aggregate in the playoff round.

|||

Spain became the first country to have five teams in the Champions League group stage in one season after Valencia squeezed past Monaco 4-3 on aggregate in the playoff round despite a 2-1 defeat on Tuesday.

Valencia joined holders Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Sevilla, who got an automatic berth as last season's winners of Europe's second-tier Europa League.

On a night of pulsating action, Malmo, Dinamo Zagreb, Maccabi Tel Aviv and Shakhtar Donetsk also booked money-spinning group stage spots in Europe's premier club competition.

Former Manchester City forward Alvaro Negredo put Valencia in the driving seat with a deft fourth-minute chip but the Spaniards were forced to hang on after Andrea Raggi and Elderson revived Monaco's hopes in the principality.

“It was important to get an away goal and we managed that early in the match which helped calm things down,” Negredo told Spanish television. “In the second half they pressed forward and we were tiring but thankfully we held on.”

Swedish champions Malmo made the group stage for a second straight season after captain Markus Rosenberg and a Dedryck Boyata own goal gave them a bruising 2-0 win and 4-3 aggregate triumph over Celtic to overturn a 3-2 first-leg away deficit.

Former European Cup winners Celtic lost their lead after Rosenberg met a corner, the ball sliding in off his shoulder.

Malmo missed several chances before Boyata's desperate attempt to clear in a goalmouth scramble ended with the Celtic defender sliding the ball into his own net.

“We are at least as good as last year, particularly at home,” Rosenberg told Sweden's TV6 after Malmo kept a 10th straight clean sheet at home in European qualifying.

“A hard day's work, we did what we said we would do and the crowd were great as always.”

Dinamo qualified for the third time in the past five seasons, beating Skenderbeu 4-1 at home to complete a 6-2 overall victory against the Albanians.

Algeria striker El Arabi Hilal Soudani netted a fine brace, with Jeremy Taravel and Armin Hodzic also on the scoresheet for the Croatians.

A nervy 2-2 home draw with Rapid Vienna saw Shakhtar through 3-2 on aggregate after a 1-0 win in the first leg, while Maccabi edged out Basel on away goals, a 1-1 home draw being just enough following last week's 2-2 tie in Switzerland.

Shakhtar appeared to be cruising after Marlos doubled their aggregate lead but goals from Louis Schaub and Steffen Hofmann turned the tie on its head before Olexandr Gladkiy forced the final twist in a rip-roaring first half.

Maccabi progressed to the group stage for the second time after an Eran Zahavi goal cancelled out Luca Zuffi's opener.

The top clash among Wednesday's five games features Manchester United's visit to Bruges, where the three-time winners will defend a 3-1 first-leg advantage over the Belgians. – Reuters

Chippa teach Tuks a lesson

A second-half trio of strikes vaulted Chippa United to a 4-0 victory over a 10-men University of Pretoria side.

|||

Johannesburg – A second-half trio of strikes vaulted Chippa United to a 4-0 victory over a 10-men University of Pretoria side in their Premiership match at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, on Tuesday evening.

With the hosts 1-0 up at the break, it appeared to be heading for a tight finish until Tuks had Vukile Mngqibisa sent off and it signalled the turn of Chippa to don their scoring boots.

Chippa United broke the deadlock in the 33rd minute. From a setpiece Rhulani Manzini sent the ball into the area and Mark Mayambela headed home the opener for a 1-0 lead for the hosts.

With Tuks struggling to find an equaliser, they were reduced to 10 men in the 69th minute. Mngqibisa received his second yellow card for a challenge on Chippa player Erick Chipeta. The referee had no option but to give Mngqibisa his marching orders.

The reduction in numbers opened the floodgates for the home side who piled on three more goals in the closing stages of the encounter.

Tuks conceded a penalty in the 78th minute as keeper Washington Arubi fouled Nkosinathi Mthiyane. Up stepped Chipeta who converted from the spot to make it 2-0 to Chippa.

Three minutes later and Chippa made it 3-0. It was the turn of Mthiyane who on this occasion found the target with a headed effort.

In the 87th minute, Mayambela turned provider as Lerato Manzini was fed the ball and made no mistake to make it a comprehensive 4-0 win for his side.

Rodgers loves high intensity

Manager Brendan Rodgers hailed the return of Liverpool's high-intensity pressing after the club's third clean sheet in a row.

|||

LONDON: Manager Brendan Rodgers hailed the return of Liverpool’s high-intensity pressing after the club’s third clean sheet in a row during Monday’s 0-0 draw at Arsenal and said their defensive cohesion would allow the team’s creative talents to flourish.

Liverpool are yet to concede a goal in the Premier League this season after letting in 48 last year, the worst record of any side that finished in the top six apart from Tottenham Hotspur, and one that included a 4-1 rout the last time they visited the Emirates.

“Our performance level is growing all the time, you see our defensive organisation was very good against a top-class team,” the Northern Irishman said after the game.

“With my teams the focus is always very much on the football element.

“But anyone who has followed my career as a youth coach through into senior management, (knows) it’s very much about the intensity of how we press and that cohesion as a team,” Rodgers added.

“That was something that drifted last season, for sure, so it was very important, especially with a number of new players coming in, that our defensive organisation was super organised,” the 42-year-old said.

“That’ll be the platform for us with all our creative talent.”

Rodgers said he was satisfied with the performanc e but disappointed not to get the win after Liverpool dominated in the first half only to be kept at bay by the impressive Petr Cech.

“The overriding feeling is we get a point, a clean sheet and we move to the next game,” the manager said.

“We definitely could have had all three points,” he added.

“Certainly performance-wise, I was very happy with how we worked.”

Midfielders Jordan Henderson and Adam Lallana, who started the 1-0 wins against Stoke City and Bournemouth, missed the Arsenal game due to injury.

Henderson was ruled out with a foot problem while Lallana missed the game due to a thigh injury. – Reuters

Can City stop rampant Amakhosi?

In the first half of last season it looked like no-one could stop Chiefs, but Polokwane City managed to do just that...

|||

Johannesburg - In the first half of last season when the Kaizer Chiefs juggernaut was running with such precision it appeared that no-one could stop them, Polokwane City then managed to do just that - halt Amakhosi’s run of victories.

Kosta Papic’s team were only the second team - after Moroka Swallows - to steal a point from Chiefs as they held them goalless at Polokwane’s Peter Mokaba Stadium.

A repeat of that result will be most welcome on Tuesday night as the Limpopo outfit look to rid themselves of their reputation as the league’s most defensively inept outfit.

Just two matches into the new season and City have already leaked in five goals - their 3-0 defeat by University of Pretoria at the weekend coming after they beat Bloemfontein Celtic 3-2 in their season opener.

But in Chiefs they meet a team that will be high on confidence, Amakhosi having smashed four past Free State Stars on Saturday night.

And just as was the case under Stuart Baxter last season, the defending league champions once again have goals coming from all over the field - with Robert Sankara, George Lebese, Liberty Chakoroma and Siphiwe Tshabalala having contributed to the victory at the weekend.

They scored four against City in the second round and indications are that they can repeat the dose on Tuesday night.

But they will not find City willing to just let them come to the Limpopo capital and pick up the points. For one, Papic’s team will be keen to get back to winning ways and will stop at nothing to achieve that.

In Punch Masenamela they have a former Chiefs man who is both defensively adept and a big threat when he makes those trademark forays of his up the left flank.

He is likely to ensure that Siboniso Gaxa’s attacks are limited while he will threaten the Chiefs goal with his own dangerous crosses into the box.

It is Jabulani Maluleke, however, that Chiefs will have to be most wary of if they are not to come a cropper on Tuesday night. The City skipper is arguably one of the most underrated players in the local game, Maluleke having dished out consistent performance season-in and season-out for every club he has played for.

At City he has blossomed as he is allowed the freedom of the park and that has seen him play the role of fetcher, carrier and distributor with excellence as he dictates how the team plays.

But it is the fact he also contributes goals that makes him such a key member of City. He scored this season’s first goal and will be keen to add another. He is particularly deadly on set-pieces and the likes of Willard Katsande, Siyanda Xulu and Erick Mathoho will do well not to concede fouls in front of their box lest Chiefs are made to pay.

Yet if City appear a one-man team of sorts, Chiefs are the direct opposite - with anyone who puts on the famous gold and black strip able to turn the game in their side’s favour.

Reneilwe Letsholonyane has what it takes to nullify whatever threat Maluleke brings and will be ably assisted by both Lebese and Tshabalala.

Whichever way this match goes though, the one thing that is certain is that it will be an open encounter - after all any game involving City always is. And under Steve Komphela, Chiefs are no longer waiting to pounce on their opposition in the transition; they rather go at them directly.

In the other matches on Tuesday night, Mpumalanga Black Aces welcome Mamelodi Sundowns to Mbombela Stadium while Chippa United are at home to University of Pretoria.

MLS is the place to be, says Keane

LA Galaxy striker Robbie Keane believes Major League Soccer can attract the world’s biggest players.

|||

London - LA Galaxy striker Robbie Keane believes Major League Soccer can attract the world’s biggest players.

“This is the league,” said Keane. “There’s no getting away from it. It’s getting bigger and bigger and that will continue.

“People are calling me from everywhere to play in this league. Years ago there were other leagues. People wanted to go to Spain. Not any more. People want to come here.”

Galaxy had just beaten New York City 5-1 and the Irish striker had scored twice. Steven Gerrard, Andrea Pirlo and David Villa were all on the pitch. Frank Lampard, injured, sat in the stands with 27 000 fans.

Galaxy coach Bruce Arena agrees with Keane’s assessment. “I have talked to some of the greatest players in the game this year about coming here... you’d be shocked,” he said.

The MLS wants more stars in their prime, something Arena believes isn’t far off. “Ten years from now... it’s going to be wild and we’re going to have real players here in that time,” he added.

Ramsey wants disallowed goal reviewed

Arsenal's Aaron Ramsey has called for video technology to help after his goal against Liverpool was disallowed.

|||

London - Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey has called for video technology to help with crucial decisions after his goal against Liverpool during Monday's 0-0 draw at the Emirates Stadium was ruled out for offside.

Ramsey ran through onto Santi Cazorla's pass in the first half and slotted home past Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, only to realise that assistant referee Simon Bennett had raised his flag.

“I thought I held my run a bit, I thought I was onside but I obviously took a glance over to make sure and saw the flag was up,” the 24-year-old told the British media.

“The replays suggest I was onside - it should have stood - but obviously the linesman thought it was offside,” he added.

“At the end of the day we should have been 1-0 up.

“To look at a video for 20 seconds would have maybe changed the outcome of the game,” the Wales international said.

“I think we could take a leaf out of rugby - they do it really well. You see it on the screens, they go off for 20 seconds and they get the decision right in the end,” Ramsey said.

Arsenal currently lie ninth in the table on four points and travel to St James' Park to take on Newcastle United on Saturday.

‘Chelsea was a gamble I had to take’

Pedro said he took a “gamble” by leaving Barcelona, but he was driven by his desire for to play more.

|||

London - Chelsea's new signing Pedro has said he took a “gamble” by leaving Spanish champions Barcelona after eight successful years, but one driven by his desire for more playing time.

The Spain striker completed a 30 million euro ($34.6 million) move to the Premier League champions last week and came up with a goal and an assist on his debut in their 3-2 victory at West Bromwich Albion on Sunday.

“Of course I would have liked to have stayed at Barca and retire here,” Sky Sports quoted the 28-year-old as telling the Spanish media in his farewell press conference for which he flew back to Barcelona on Monday.

“That was my intention when I signed my contract extension. But I've taken a gamble because it's what I wanted.

“I wasn't going to stay here just to appear on the photo,” he added.

Pedro, who has scored 59 goals for the Catalan club in 128 La Liga starts, found his opportunities limited after the arrival of Luis Suarez from Liverpool last season and decided to move despite signing a new four-year contract in June.

“I was really happy when I signed that contract. But then I saw that my situation would not change.

“I'm always ambitious but it was difficult to have continuity here. Now I have new challenges and the opportunity to continue to play,” he said.

“This offer arrived and it gave me everything I needed to take a decision. I wanted to leave to have more playing time,” the Spain international and World Cup winner added.

Pedro won 20 trophies in his time with Barcelona, including five La Liga titles and three Champions Leagues crowns.

“I'm very happy to be at Chelsea because it's a club that, like Barca, are fighting for titles,” he said.

“I had offers from other English clubs - Manchester United, City and Chelsea, who were the club that more rapidly resolved my transfer and the one that showed more interest in me,” the striker added.

“I just hope I don't have to face Barca or step out at the Nou Camp wearing another jersey. It would be difficult, I wouldn't like it.

“I don't think Barca will miss me because they have plenty of quality players, but I will sure miss them, the players and the club,” he said.

Stop acting like a diva, Mr Tinkler!

So Eric Tinkler enjoys some semblance of success and he suddenly believes he can tell the media what to do.

|||

Johannesburg - So Eric Tinkler enjoys some semblance of success as a head coach and he suddenly believes he can tell the media what questions to ask him or how they should report. Ja nee!

Ahead of the past weekend’s CAF Confederation Cup group tie with AC Leopards, the Orlando Pirates coach threw his toys out of the cot over what was clearly the biggest talking point regarding the Buccaneers.

With Brighton Mhlongo out injured, Pirates had just one goalkeeper - Felipe Ovono - for the match that they duly won 2-0 to book their place in the semis of the continent’s second tier knockout competition. But before Mpho Makola and Oupa Manyisa scored goals that put the Congolese side to the sword on Saturday night, Tinkler had behaved like a prima donna late Friday at Orlando Stadium.

Any journalist worth his salt knew the only story prior to that match was how Pirates were going to handle the goalkeeping situation. And even on Tuesday night after they beat Chippa United in a league match, a question along those lines was put to the Bucs coach.

He jokingly asked that the story of their not having a natural reserve goalkeeper be kept under wraps only for the club’s media person to suggest that journalists attend Friday’s training session so the coach can discuss the issue.

They duly went only to have Tinkler behave like a diva.

Here’s how it went down:

Journalist: “Coach, have you figured out who will deputise for him (Ovono) tomorrow?”

Tinkler: “Should he get injured, you mean. He’s not gonna get injured!”

Journalist: “Obviously we’ll pull all our inyangas to make sure he doesn’t get injured. But have you figured it out?”

Tinkler: “I have, and I’m not telling you”

Journalist: “Okay, will you have that person wearing the goalkeeping gear tomorrow?”

Tinkler: “No, no I won’t be telling you (laughs).”

Journalist: “Psychologically, that thing - has it worked on you guys?”

Tinkler: “What do you mean?”

Journalist: Going into tomorrow with one goalkeeper?”

Tinkler: “No, because I have all confidence Ovono will be fine. He is an experienced goalkeeper, he knows how to protect himself. And I don’t foresee any issues in that regard.

So far, so good! And then the wheels came off.

Journalist: “No worries, especially when you know how serious this game is and also the opposition coming here knowing (that you only have one goalkeeper) and might come with some funny ploy?”

Tinkler: “Be positive guys; not because you start writing things that are negative, which is wrong. No, I am telling you to be positive otherwise I end the interview now. I am serious. Because you guys are causing it, you’re causing it. Let me ask you, would we know if they only had one goalkeeper? Would we know? No we wouldn’t because the media would protect them. But you guys are not looking to protect. I hope you’re not filming this, switch it off. Thandi, (Merafe, the Pirates media officer) I’m getting upset here. Do you understand? Stop asking silly questions and putting rubbish in the newspapers. Start writing a little bit of positive things. You’re being negative now, why continue on the same subject.”

Well, Eric - they continued on the same subject because it was a subject that needed to be discussed fully. You had not answered their questions satisfactorily and they were trying to get that out of you.

For one, the Pirates fans needed to be put at ease that their club had a plan to replace their only goalkeeper should the need be. That the opposition were to know about your goalkeeping dilemma is not for the media to worry about.

If you’ve not cottoned on to it yet, the fact is that while we are patriotically behind Pirates’ efforts to do well on the continent, we are not the club’s public relations machine.

This much your colleagues actually showed to understand as your assistant Teboho Moloi calmly discussed the same goalkeeping issue on a radio show and told listeners the club had a plan to deal with it without giving away too much. Club administrator Flloyd Mbele was also on the television on Thursday discussing the same matter.

As it is, the fact that Pirates only have two goalkeepers registered for the competition is actually a reflection on the technical team that failed to make their superiors realise that letting Ralph Zikalala go to Golden Arrows was short-changing them. And as head coach, you should shoulder the blame for that Mr Tinkler. That’s perhaps the only negative in this saga. Then you come around and think you can dictate what the media reports, please!

Are you aware those same reporters who attended a late afternoon session when they could easily have done their previews earlier without allowing you the platform to discuss your plans, are among those who have followed Pirates’ progress on the continent unfailingly? They have been to the airport whenever Pirates arrived from their matches - be it early morning or late in the evening. And they told the ‘positive story’ of the Buccaneers’ good run.

Of course it is a good run, one that no doubt all South Africans are happy about and willing Pirates on to more.

But it is not success yet. Not until you hand the trophy to Irvin Khoza like Ronald Mkhandawire did with the Champions Cup almost 20 years ago. And even then, as a coach you will continue to be under scrutiny - your job never fully guaranteed.

For someone working in an industry that treats its exponents like disposable razors, perhaps it is about time you exercised some courtesy to the media Mr Tinkler. I suggest you get some pointers from your seasoned colleagues fast because the diva tendencies you pulled won’t help your cause at all. And they are not a good reflection on a brand as big as Pirates that some people lost their lives to build over the years.

Berahino's transfer request rejected

West Bromwich Albion have rejected a transfer request from striker Saido Berahino, a target for Tottenham Hotspur.

|||

London - West Bromwich Albion have rejected a transfer request from striker Saido Berahino, a target for Tottenham Hotspur, according to a statement on the club website.

The Baggies rejected an offer from Tottenham last week and manager Tony Pulis dropped the 22-year-old for their 3-2 home defeat against Chelsea on Sunday, saying the forward was not in the right frame of mind to play.

The Baggies, who signed strikers Rickie Lambert and Salomon Rondon during the close season, currently sit bottom of the league table with just one point from their three games so far.

“West Bromwich Albion have received a written transfer request from Saido Berahino,” the club said in a statement posted on its website (www.wba.co.uk).

“The request has been rejected and the club's position remains unchanged from that outlined in the statement from Chairman Jeremy Peace of August 18,” the statement added.

Peace had issued a strongly worded statement assuring fans that Berahino would not be sold.

Berahino, who is contracted to West Brom until the summer of 2017, has scored 19 goals in 72 Premier League appearances for the club.

Seven days to grab a ‘Gaalactico’

Gossip circles continues to hold United at its core, with the suggestion that the club craves something spectacular.

London - The morning after Manchester United’s pursuit of Spanish winger Pedro ended with news that the Barcelona player was moving instead to Chelsea, Old Trafford chief executive Ed Woodward was in bullish mood.

‘Don’t worry, we have bigger targets,’ was the thrust of Woodward’s message to associates. ‘The Pedro thing will eventually be forgotten.’

Woodward, on the whole, does not generally want for self-confidence. His attitude towards the business of buying footballers reflects this and on his watch attempts have already been made to sign - with varying degrees of success - Gareth Bale, Angel di Maria, Cesc Fabregas, Thiago Alcantara, Radamel Falcao and Sergio Ramos.

As United and the rest of Europe hurtle into the final week of another trading window, therefore, Woodward and his manager Louis van Gaal continue to aim high. Gossip in football circles continues to hold United at its core with the suggestion being that England’s biggest club crave something spectacular between now and next Tuesday.

Van Gaal has a liking for Bale in particular. If he could take one player from within Europe tomorrow then it would be Real Madrid’s Wales winger. He admires Bayern Munich’s Thomas Muller also while suggestions that Woodward attempted to draw Barcelona into a rather ambitious conversation about the Brazilian Neymar have not been categorically denied.

All these remain fanciful, however, in terms of the current window at least and this represents United’s big problem. The odds on Bale moving to United in the next couple of years are pretty short but Van Gaal is confident of signing him during his time at the club. The Dutchman currently has two years of his contract left.

In terms of right now, however, United find themselves being pushed towards other marquee players such as Zlatan Ibrahimovic, in whom they have no interest, and the faded Brazilian star Pato. They were in this situation a year ago and ended up with a lame tho-roughbred in the shape of Falcao.

They have learned a lesson from that, which is why the next few days will be so interesting. While reaching for the stars it is important to keep a grasp on some semblance of sound judgment and perhaps this is why the official line out of Old Trafford yesterday was that, apart from an interest in Southampton’s forward Sadio Mane, there were no other situations currently ‘active’.

Supporters, and even owners, tend to grow frustrated at this time of year. They do not understand why lots of money does not talk more convincingly. If it did, though, Chelsea or Manchester City would have signed Paul Pogba by now and City also Kevin De Bruyne.

Transfers of this scale are enormously complicated, however. They often take years of planning.

United, for example, signed the German midfielder Sebastian Schweinsteiger this summer after failing 12 months earlier.

City, meanwhile, identified Yaya Toure while Mark Hughes was manager but had to wait two years and first sign his brother Kolo as bait before Roberto Mancini was eventually able to push the button on the deal.

Currently, Chelsea are trying to sign Pogba while aware that he has the opportunity to go to Barcelona next summer. De Bruyne, meanwhile, has been keeping City waiting while he himself looks to see if interest from Bayern Munich, which was denied yesterday, and Paris Saint-Germain hardens up.

These days, there are only a handful of clubs with the money to compete at this level. Three of them, United, City and Chelsea, are English and their hands will only strengthen when the new Premier League TV deal kicks in next season.

Nevertheless, competition at the top table is fierce with clubs even attempting to stockpile players they do not necessarily need just to ensure their opponents do not get them.

United have fallen victim to this before, with Chelsea beating them to a number of players during the early years of Roman Abramovich at Stamford Bridge.

United know they need another galactico to help Van Gaal’s team tick at the top end of the field. One of their problems, however, is that the majority of players they want are already playing at clubs wealthy enough to resist them, for the time being at least.

Sitting in a restaurant recently, Van Gaal spoke to friends in expansive terms about Bale in particular. He believes the former Tottenham player can lend his team the raw pace, dynamism and unpredict-ability that they currently lack.

It is not a new view, either. Sir Alex Ferguson first spotted Bale playing as a left back in the Southampton youth team and expressed a firm interest. His successor David Moyes, meanwhile, was disappointed Woodward did not manage to sign him when he left Spurs for Spain two summers ago. That still rankles with the Scot.

Here in 2015, meanwhile, time is once again running out. If Woodward is to pull off his Wolf of Wall Street deal this week it may take more than hard cash to do his talking.
