‘Arsenal don't need more midfielders’

Arsene Wenger won’t sign a defensive midfielder before the transfer window shuts, saying he is happy with his options.

|||

London - Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has ruled out signing a defensive midfielder before the transfer window shuts, saying he is happy with his options.

The Gunners have been criticised by pundits and some fans for not buying another holding midfielder to support Francis Coquelin, who broke into the first team last season after being recalled from a loan spell with second tier side Charlton Athletic.

The only competition for Coquelin is captain Mikel Arteta, 33, who has just returned from a calf injury after six months out, and an aging Mathieu Flamini, who has only one year left on his contract.

“Everybody has their opinion and everybody is entitled to have an opinion. I could prove to you that it's not necessarily right,” Wenger was quoted as saying by the club's website (www.arsenal.com) when asked about the need for more 'powerful' midfielders by reporters.

“When you don't win, you're wrong and people always find reasons why. Are they the good reasons?

“I think I have enough experience and intelligence to know when it's right and when it's wrong,” added the club's longest-serving manager.

Arsenal are still waiting for their first home win of the season after being held by Liverpool in Monday's entertaining goalless draw following the opening day shock 2-0 defeat by West Ham United.

The hosts were unlucky not to take an early lead when Aaron Ramsey's effort was ruled out for offside in the eighth minute, although Liverpool were equally unfortunate not be out of sight by halftime.

New signing Petr Cech saved a Christian Benteke strike from point-blank range, while Liverpool's Philippe Coutinho also struck the woodwork twice.

Wenger was disappointed that Ramsey's goal was disallowed.

“It was a regular goal. It was a period of the game where we maybe had the most problems defensively but it's a regular goal,” the 65-year-old said.

“I can't see why it was cancelled. It's clear and on that front you cannot say that Liverpool can complain,” the Frenchman added.

Wenger also conceded that his club have not been up top scratch this season after collecting just four points from their first three Premier League fixtures.

“We have started very average I must concede sharpness is missing a little bit in some players,” the former Monaco manager said.

“Our game is still not fluent enough in the final third.”

Arsenal target Cavani

Arsenal are exploring a shock swoop for Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani.

|||

Arsenal are exploring a shock swoop for Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani as their hopes fade of landing top target Karim Benzema.

The Gunners have started looking at alternatives to France star Benzema, who Real Madrid insist is not for sale.

A move for Cavani, 28, has been discussed by the Arsenal hierarchy, with manager Arsene Wenger desperate to sign a forward before next week’s transfer deadline.

He is only interested in proven, world-class players but whether PSG would consider selling Cavani remains to be seen.

The Uruguay forward’s raft of advisers also make any deal difficult to broker.

That has not put off Arsenal, though, as they go back in for a player they first tried to sign in January 2013. Cavani was with Napoli at that time and switched to PSG the following summer for £55million.

He has scored 54 goals in 79 games for the French side since then.

Benzema did his utmost yesterday to quell talk of a move to the Emirates Stadium.

The 27-year-old has played a bit-part role for Real recently owing to a thigh injury, as talk about a potential switch to Arsenal has escalated.

But Benzema posted a picture of himself in a Real shirt on Twitter yesterday and wrote: ‘For all those clowns who want to make believe things at my fans. Here this is my home!’ – Daily Mail

Balotelli set for Milan return

Mario Balotelli is set to end his Anfield misery by re-joining AC Milan on a season-long loan.

|||

Mario Balotelli is set to end his Anfield misery by re-joining AC Milan on a season-long loan.

The Liverpool striker, who has been training away from the first-team squad for most of the past month, was in Milan at the weekend to try to agree a deal.

Milan, who sold Balotelli to the Reds for £16million last August, will not have to pay a loan fee. It is understood that Liverpool will pay half of the 25-year-old’s salary — likely to be around £2.5m.

There is no clause forcing Milan to sign him permanently in 12 months’ time but, for now, Liverpool will be relieved to move on a player who has flopped on Merseyside.

Sampdoria, Lazio and Bologna are among the clubs who have been linked with Balotelli this summer, but only Milan have shown firm interest. When asked at the weekend what the future held for Balotelli, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers said: ‘It’s not something I’ve really thought of.

‘But every player that comes in here will be respected. We bring in players that are good players. Whether it works out for them, it’s up to them. It’s not fair to talk about an individual.’

If this move to AC Milan does not work, it is difficult to see where Balotelli goes next. Milan chief executive Adriano Galliani has warned the Italian: ‘This is absolutely his last chance. I hope he understands this.’ – Daily Mail

Cech provides reminder of his class

Petr Cech provided a reminder of his undoubted class with some stunning saves as he marshaled a nervous Arsenal to a goalless draw against Liverpool.

|||

London - After an error-strewn league debut Petr Cech provided a timely reminder of his undoubted class with some stunning saves as he marshaled a nervous Arsenal to a goalless draw against Liverpool on Monday.

Cech, who arrived from Chelsea during the close-season, was at fault for both goals as Arsenal succumbed to a surprise 2-0 opening-day defeat at home to West Ham United before being breached again against Crystal Palace last week.

Against a Liverpool side who had won both of their opening games, Cech turned in a performance typical of a player who had become one of the most respected goalkeepers during 11 trophy-laden seasons at Stamford Bridge.

“When you start your first game with a new club and everything goes wrong for you individually you need to go back to work and bounce back and this is what I tried to do,” man-of-the-match Cech told Sky Sports.

“I was in the right place at the right time and I helped the team overcome difficult moments in the first half. It's hard to believe after all the chances it finished 0-0.”

While his general leadership helped to marshal a nervous, error-strewn Arsenal defence - without experienced duo Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny - two particular saves stood out.

First, the 33-year-old produced a sublime instinctive stop to deny Christian Benteke from point-blank range then he acrobatically tipped Philippe Coutinho's curling goal-bound shot onto the post.

“With Christian Benteke's effort Gabriel (Paulista) tried to intercept the ball just in front of me so I had to wait for that moment and you cannot go ahead,” Cech said.

“Obviously once it got past him I knew I had to be there fast and I got there and closed him down quick enough. The shot from Coutinho, I saw the ball all the way and I managed to get there.

“Today was a particularly difficult situation because both central defenders couldn't play. Laurent and Per couldn't be here and it was a big game so there was a bit of pressure on Gabriel and Calum (Chambers).

“Here, I need to make sure I communicate more and make sure everyone is in the right place at the right time.” – Reuters

Arsenal, Liverpool battle to a draw

Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech produced a string of stunning saves to keep an impressive Liverpool at bay.

|||

London - Liverpool's 100 percent start to the season ended with a hard-fought goalless draw against top-four rivals Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Monday.

Arsenal were indebted to goalkeeper Petr Cech - at fault for West Ham United's goals in a 2-0 opening-weekend defeat - in the first half after he produced a string of stunning saves to keep an impressive Liverpool at bay.

Arsenal improved and enjoyed the better of proceedings in the second half but were unable to breech a stingy Liverpool defence which has yet to concede in three matches this season.

Liverpool sit third with seven points - two behind early pace-setters Manchester City - while Arsenal, touted as serious title contenders before the season, have had an indifferent start and are ninth with four points.

“When you start your first game with a new club and everything goes wrong for you individually you need to go back to work and bounce back and this is what I tried to do,” Cech told Sky Sports.

“I was in the right place at the right time and I helped the team overcome difficult moments in the first half. It's hard to believe after all the chances it finished 0-0.”

Having been humbled 4-1 on their last visit to the Emirates Stadium, Liverpool made an early statement on a wet night in north London with Philippe Coutinho rattling the crossbar in the third minute.

That early scare brought Arsenal to life and only the narrowest of offside decisions denied Aaron Ramsey an opening goal five minutes later.

Arsenal were without experienced defenders Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny and their replacements Gabriel Paulista and Calum Chambers looked nervous against the physical Christian Benteke and skilful Coutinho.

Arsenal commanded the majority of possession but it was Liverpool who carried the greatest threat against the hosts' disjointed defence.

Cech was called into action to deny first Benteke, with a stunning reaction save, and Roberto Firmino in quick succession.

Cech had to be at his brilliant best again to tip Coutinho's goal-bound shot onto the woodwork as Arsenal desperately held on before halftime.

The Gunners came out with far more conviction after the break and Santi Cazorla and Olivier Giroud combined to create a the space for Alexis Sanchez to fire against the post.

Liverpool were proving a tough nut to crack with Giroud, Ramsey and substitute Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain were all denied by Simon Mignolet as the visitor's defence stood firm.

Wenger has no sympathy for Liverpool

Liverpool lost Luis Suarez and Raheem Sterling in successive summers but Arsene Wenger has no sympathy for the club.

|||

London - Liverpool lost Luis Suarez and Raheem Sterling in successive summers but Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has no sympathy for the club who refused to sell the Uruguayan to the Gunners in 2013.

Arsenal welcome the Merseyside club on Monday for a high-profile fixture at the Emirates Stadium and the Reds' rejection of the Gunners' offer of 40 million plus one pound for Suarez still seems to rankle Wenger.

“Liverpool can make their own decisions. They refused to sell us Suarez so I cannot feel too much sympathy for them,” the 65-year-old Frenchman said.

Liverpool scored more than 100 goals in the 2013-14 season, largely thanks to Suarez, Daniel Sturridge and Sterling.

However, with two of the prolific trio having left the club and a third out injured, Wenger acknowledged the challenge his counterpart Brendan Rodgers faces.

“Let's remember two years ago with Suarez, Sturridge and Sterling they scored over a hundred goals. To score more than 100 goals in the Premier League, you need special quality to do that,” Wenger said.

“Sterling was part of that. I personally rate Raheem Sterling. We will see that in the longer term. He's a quality player.

“But they bought (Roberto) Firmino. We will see what he will produce. He is a similar player,” he added.

Liverpool have brought in 32.5 million pound ($51 million) man Christian Benteke to ease the goal-scoring burden on the team but Wenger is confident of keeping him quiet.

“We played a cup final against Benteke and we managed to deal with it. Then again, every game is a new challenge and we have to show that we can do it,” Wenger said.

“We have dealt with him in a positive way before.”

Will Chiefs be playing at CT Stadium?

Rodney Reiners wants to know if Kaizer Chiefs will be playing three of their home games at Cape Town Stadium?

|||

We are still waiting for the City of Cape Town to confirm or deny whether they have invited Kaizer Chiefs to play three of their home games at the Cape Town Stadium.

The spin is that the City wants to make the former World Cup venue in Green Point “more financially viable” – but all the exercise of bringing Chiefs here will do is further alienate Cape football. The perception (or should that be reality) is that the City is sending a big, big “up-yours” to football clubs and footballers who live, breathe, eat and slave in this city.

We know the City is struggling to make the stadium work – or is the agenda political? Nevertheless, it’s another case of smug officials being completely out of tune with the sport.

Cape Town has hundreds of amateur football clubs and tens of thousands of amateur footballers – the most in the country. It has promising, ambitious teams in the Third, Second and First Divisions, and one in the elite Premier Soccer League (PSL). Yet, except for the use of grounds across the region, including Cape Town and Athlone Stadiums, which, of course is its duty as a public service to provide, ask any club or player what this City has done to aid the progress and development of football and they will say “Nothing”.

As Siviwe Mpengesi, the owner of Chippa United, told me in an interview just before he relocated his Philippi-based club to Port Elizabeth: “Football just doesn’t talk to Cape Town, and by that I include the government of the province and the city.”

Ask any other club boss or chairman in the City – be that amateur or professional – and they will echo that sentiment. When Cape football knocks on the City’s door, it opens ever so slightly, just to peek at who has had the audacity to knock, and then it shuts it firmly, and rudely…

Now, however, with their backs to the wall, under pressure after the disaster of the Cape Town Cup (which, by the way, was of their own making), the City seems to see Chiefs as some kind of stop-gap solution. Because, let’s face it, the Cape Town Cup could have worked, if only the City had consulted with Cape football – including Safa-CT and local clubs – but, in its egotistical wisdom it failed, yet again, to connect with Capetonians.

And this will keep on happening as long as the professional business of operating the stadium is run by amateur public officials with – to add again – political agendas.

Getting the City to admit that Chiefs have been invited has been a frustrating exercise in obfuscation, which, needless to say, leads to speculation about the real motives behind the current dalliance with the Soweto side.

So, let’s look at the process. According to PSL rules, by July 31 each year, clubs have to nominate a home venue and an alternate. Chiefs have nominated the FNB Stadium in Joburg, with their alternate venue being the Cape Town Stadium. Really?

That, alone, proves that Chiefs’ negotiation with the City has been ongoing for quite a while. And, what’s more, the Joburg team was so confident that the deal was a fait accompli that they were perfectly content to name Cape Town as their other venue.

Now, as the most popular and best-supported football club in the country, rest assured Chiefs are not coming down here for nothing. They will demand quite a hefty appearance fee. The Gauteng club has, of course, done this before, in that it has previously taken some of its home games to Polokwane or Port Elizabeth (for which they easily picked up in the region of R1-1,5 million per game – and that’s just as an appearance fee).

But have a glance at Chiefs’ record in the Mother City, results-wise, and it doesn’t make for satisfactory reading. If they have any designs on retaining their PSL title, Cape Town should be the last place they wish to play a few home games – because, with their inconsistent record here, they run the risk of dropping unnecessary points. Therefore, the very reason that Chiefs want to come here (or, indeed, are coming here) suggests that the City has made it worth their while. Question: Where is the money coming from?

And, as we have already seen with the ill-fated Cape Town Cup, the City has no idea how to market and promote a football event, nor how to engage with the ordinary man in the street when it comes to sport.

Ajax Cape Town, the Mother City’s PSL club, are understandably livid. After years and years of trying to make things work in the Cape, of more than a decade of creating a professional environment for talented young kids in the region to grow their game as footballers, the region in which the club resides would rather entertain a Gauteng club. As Ajax chief executive Ari Efstathiou says: “It’s a snub for Cape Town and Capetonians. This is a stadium built by the residents, for the people of Cape Town, and now the city is inviting an outside team to use the ground.”

Remember that, with Chiefs’ support-base, an Ajax-Chiefs fixture in the Cape is a big money-spinner for Ajax. It’s the one game the Parow club can rely on to generate some money for its coffers.

If Chiefs are coming here to play three of their home games, they will be in Cape Town for four games, which means there are no guarantees for Ajax. As such, Efstathiou and Ajax are already in the process of moving their fixture against Chiefs – on September 26 – to Port Elizabeth or East London (at great cost in terms of hire, travel and accommodation). Crazy, isn’t it? Cape club plays outside of the city; Joburg club invited to use Cape Town Stadium.

It’s a sad state of affairs. Football in this country is already overwhelmingly skewed in favour of Chiefs and Orlando Pirates. They lure the sponsors, they dominate the market… while other clubs scrounge to pick up the scraps left behind and try to make do as best they can, Chiefs and Pirates continue to get stronger, aided and abetted, of course, by the politically-correct climate that dominates everything in this country.

Yet, this very city in which we reside, where the City does very little to assist local football, it now wants to welcome, with open arms and enrich a team from another province – a club with its roots, allegiances and tax money in Gauteng.

So can the City please answer us? Are Chiefs coming here or not? Cape football clubs would love to know whether the up-yours is pointed in their direction? - Cape Argus

Rodgers defends playing style

Brendan Rodgers has defended the perceived change in Liverpool's playing style brought on by the inclusion of Christian Benteke.

|||

Brendan Rodgers has defended the perceived change in Liverpool's playing style brought on by the inclusion of Christian Benteke and said the tall Belgian striker gives his side an element of unpredictability they were lacking last season.

Liverpool travel to the Emirates Stadium to take on Arsenal on Monday night hoping to maintain their perfect start to the season after two 1-0 victories in their previous fixtures.

The six-foot-four-inch (1.93 metres) Benteke, who joined from Aston Villa for a reported 32.5 million pounds ($51 million) in the close season, scored on his first appearance at Anfield for the Merseyside club to secure three points against Bournemouth last week.

“When you bring in a certain profile of player, it gives you other options,” said Rodgers, who sold another tall target man in Andy Carroll after taking the reigns at Liverpool because the forward was deemed incompatible with the high-energy, quick passing style the manager wanted to implement.

“One of the key things in bringing Christian here was, first and foremost, that he can play football,” the manager said.

“As you see already, his touch is good. His ability to bring players into the game, whether that's with his feet or a little cushioned header, is a great skill,” the Northern Irishman added.

“What he gives us is that threat in the box; when the ball comes in, he's a striker that's in the area.

“There are other ways of keeping the game alive, but when you have a 6 foot 4 inch player like Christian when the ball comes into the box, because of his physicality and mobility it keeps the game alive that little bit longer,” Rodgers said.

The manager denied that the 24-year-old Belgian's inclusion had resulted in a departure from the playing style he has tried to establish at the club over the past three seasons.

“It wasn't the case that we were smashing the ball into the box and playing off a second ball. I'm not against that. There's not a compromise,” Rodgers said.

“I said at the beginning of the season that we want the unpredictability to our game.

“Our conditions of our game won't change but hopefully because of the different types of players we have, and different strikers in particular, it gives that unpredictability to our game, which is important,” he added. – Reuters

Everton lacked ‘know-how’ - Martinez

Roberto Martinez said he was disappointed with Everton’s reaction after conceding a “sloppy” first goal in their 2-0 loss to Manchester City.

|||

Everton manager Roberto Martinez said he was disappointed with his side's reaction after conceding a “sloppy” first goal in their 2-0 loss to Manchester City on Sunday, but that his team could take several positives from their first defeat of the season.

City's Raheem Sterling played in Aleksander Kolarov for the opener and the left-back beat Tim Howard at his near post after the Everton goalkeeper dived the wrong way in the Premier League contest.

“I think the first goal seemed to be too important today,” Martinez said.

“We always knew it was going to be an important one playing against a quality side, but I think it affected us a little bit too much,” the manager added.

“It comes from us being very sloppy on the ball and us giving them a counter-attack, which ended up in the back of our net and that gave them a real sense of control,” the Spaniard said.

“I thought up to that goal, especially in the first half, we probably had the best moments in the game.

“We defended really well ... but we didn't have our normal composure or the know-how that we usually carry,” Martinez added.

“In terms of effort and the way in which we had a proper face-to-face confrontation with a team, who, in my eyes, are the best in the league at the moment ... we can take a lot of positives from that,” the 42-year-old said.

The manager also confirmed that left-back Brendan Galloway was withdrawn during the first half due to a knee injury and that Costa Rican Bryan Oviedo was ready to return for the first time since April after breaking a bone in his right foot.

“Brendan has been terrific and we as a football club are ready to give young players an opportunity,” Martinez told the club website (www.evertonfc.com).

“He picked up a patella tendon problem that we'll assess in the next 24 to 48 hours. It's probably more to do with his age and the fact he's still growing rather than a structural injury.

“Bryan Oviedo is fully fit and needs a bit of match fitness now. Hopefully we'll see him on the pitch very soon,” Martinez added. – Reuters

United will start scoring - Shaw

Manchester United’s Luke Shaw is certain they will bounce back from the disappointment of their goalless draw against Newcastle United.

|||

Manchester United defender Luke Shaw is certain his side will bounce back from the disappointment of Saturday's goalless draw against Newcastle United when they face Club Bruges in their Champions League qualifier.

The Red Devils head to Belgium for the second leg on Wednesday with a 3-1 lead over the Belgian champions, courtesy of a brace from new signing Memphis Depay.

But the Dutch forward was part of an attacking United unit who struggled to break down Newcastle at Old Trafford on Saturday, with striker Wayne Rooney again having a quiet game.

“We've got a game just around the corner (against Bruges) and I think it's only good for us. We'll get back up and try to win that game,” the 20-year-old Shaw told the club's website(www.manutd.com).

“I think it's the best thing for us, when we feel that we've dropped two points. It's very important that there's another game and it's even more important that we try to win it.

“I'm sure we'll start scoring many goals soon. We've got so much quality up front that it's only a matter of time before someone puts one away and we'll be flying again,” the former Southampton defender added.

Shaw, part of a United backline that has yet to concede a goal in three Premier League outings, said he was disappointed his side did not convert their chances, especially during a bright opening. Defender Chris Smalling also hit the post late in the game.

“With the chances we created in the first 20 minutes, I think if we'd put one of those away, it would have been game over for Newcastle,” the England international said.

“I think they wouldn't have been able to get back into the game if they were a goal down, they wouldn't have sat back like they did in the last 20 or 30 minutes. Everyone's really disappointed in the dressing room.

“I think we created so many chances and, unfortunately, we didn't put them away,” he added. – Reuters

Benitez bemoans Real’s lack of accuracy

Real Madrid's new coach Rafa Benitez was left frustrated after his side could only manage a 0-0 draw at promoted Sporting Gijon.

|||

Madrid - Real Madrid's new coach Rafa Benitez complained of a lack of shooting accuracy among his players after his return to La Liga was spoiled by a 0-0 draw at promoted Sporting Gijon in their opening match of the campaign on Sunday.

Real had scores of chances at the Molinon against a team with a fraction of their resources but could not find a way past Gijon goalkeeper Ivan Cuellar, the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Jese all drawing a blank.

James Rodriguez made little impact when he replaced Jese in the second half, while fullbacks Danilo and Marcelo were largely ineffective when they attacked down the wings.

“I knew it was going to be a match in which Sporting made things hard for us,” Benitez, who has had stints at clubs including Liverpool, Chelsea and Napoli since leaving Valencia in 2004, told reporters.

“There were a lot of shots but without precision and in the first half we allowed them to get into the game,” added the 55-year-old, who has taken over from the sacked Carlo Ancelotti.

“We have to improve things, we have to work more. We were lacking the final pass and skill in our execution in attack.”

Real are hoping to improve on a 2014-15 season under Ancelotti in which they failed to win the Champions League, La Liga or the King's Cup.

Benitez has returned to club where he featured as a player and coach in the youth academy and is seeking to deny arch rivals Barcelona, who won the treble last season, their sixth La Liga title in eight years.

Barca got their La Liga campaign off to a winning start earlier on Sunday with a 1-0 success at Athletic Bilbao.

Benitez said his players had reacted well in the second half against Gijon and that he remained upbeat about Real's chances of lifting silverware this term.

“The players showed character and personality and in the second half were clearly going after the game,” he told reporters.

“What I have clear in my mind is that this is just the beginning,” he added. “We have to keep making adjustments. I am still optimistic.” – Reuters

City looking ominous

Manchester City's impressive 2-0 victory at Everton equalled a club record of nine successive Premier League wins.

|||

London - Manchester City's impressive 2-0 victory at Everton on Sunday equalled a club record of nine successive Premier League wins but more importantly sent an ominous warning to their rivals.

City have yet to drop a point since a humbling 4-2 defeat away to bitter local rivals United in early April.

Given last season's underwhelming campaign, which ended with an eight-point deficit to champions Chelsea, few had talked about City as title favourites in the build-up this time.

Three successive wins, however, including a 3-0 victory at home to Chelsea, has catapulted City to the top of the fledgling table and sent an ominous warning that they mean business.

“Before the game someone told me that if we win today it is a new record after so many years,” manager Manuel Pellegrini, whose side have scored eight goals and conceded none, told Sky Sports.

“That is secondary but they are always important. But it is more important to be top of the table and the most important thing is to see the team playing the way we are doing.

“I am pleased because it was a very professional performance against a very difficult team here at Goodison Park.

“In the first half and the second half we were very consistent and we had more chances to score goals than Everton.

“We scored two goals and again we kept a clean sheet so I think we are working very well as a team in attack and defence.”

Crucial to their impressive start, which has put them two points clear on nine, is the form of their leading quartet Vincent Kompany, Yaya Toure, David Silva and Sergio Aguero.

Kompany, who has guided City to three clean sheets and scored twice, and Yaya Toure appear back to their dominant best following a disappointing season last year.

Silva and Aguero have also been in mesmerising form, carving open opposition defences and creating chances at will.

Close-season signing Raheem Sterling from Liverpool has already formed a strong partnership with fullback Aleksandar Kolarov, scorer of the opening goal on Sunday, and the pair have been central to much of City's best play this year.

“We have a good squad,” Pellegrini added after substitute Samir Nasri had scored a late second goal. “We have all the players involved in our target which is to play in the way we are doing so far.

“Now after Watford (at home on Saturday) we are going to start playing eight games every month so it is important to have the whole squad involved in our targets this year.

“It is very important to understand we are just starting the season and it is just three games.” – Reuters

Ten-man Chelsea hang on for victory

Chelsea held on with 10 men to claim their first win of the PL season at West Brom on Sunday.

|||

London – Chelsea survived almost 40 minutes with 10 men to claim their first Premier League victory of the season with a 3-2 win at West Bromwich Albion on Sunday.

New signing Pedro was among the scorers for the champions as Chelsea led 3-1 but after captain John Terry was sent off, James Morrison’s second goal meant the visitors had to cling on for three points.

Morrison missed a penalty for West Brom on 14 minutes before Pedro and Diego Costa made it 2-0 to Chelsea after half-an-hour.

Morrison pulled one six minutes later but Cezar Azpilicueto restored the advantage three minutes before the break.

Terry was sent off for pulling back Salomon Rondon nine minutes into the second half and Morrison halved the deficit five minutes later.

West Brom chased the equaliser and Rondon forced a good late save from Thibaut Courtois as Chelsea hung on to move into the top half while West Brom fall to the bottom of the table.

Later on Sunday, Manchester City, with two wins out of two, can go top if they win at Everton.

Disappointing debut for Drogba

Didier Drogba made a tame MLS debut for Montreal in their home loss to Philadelphia on Saturday.

|||

New York – Former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba made a tame MLS debut for Montreal in their 1-0 home loss to Philadelphia Union on Saturday.

The former Ivory Coast player entered the game in the 59th minute to a standing ovation from the Montreal crowd but had his night spoiled in the end.

Philadelphia’s Sebastien Le Toux scored the winner in the 78th minute on an assist from Eric Ayuk Mbu, ending their five-game winless streak.

For the night, Drogba had two shots and two fouls in his 31 minutes for Montreal.

“I thought he brought a presence in the team,” Montreal coach Frank Klopas told reporters. “I just think we’ve got to find a better way to use him. That’s going to take time.”

In other MLS matches, Vancouver regained first place in the Western Conference with a 1-0 win over FC Dallas.

Cristian Techera back-heeled in a goal in the 32nd minute for the Whitecaps who moved two points above Los Angeles.

Meanwhile, Real Salt Lake got goals from Javier Morales and Sebastian Jaime to beat Seattle Sounders 2-0.

In Toronto, Jozy Altidore scored two goals in about 18 minutes of play to lead Toronto FC to a 5-0 rout over Orlando City SC.

In Columbus, Jack McInerney’s 88th minute strike lifted the Crew to a 3-2 victory over Sporting Kansas City.

Tony Tchani tied the game 2-2 eight minutes earlier for the Crew.

In Washington, the San Jose Earthquakes got goals from Chris Wondolowski and Shea Salinas to beat DC United 2-0.

In Chicago, Dillon Serna scored in the opening minute as Colorado beat Chicago Fire 1-0 to snap a three-game losing streak. – Reuters
