Will Chiefs be playing at CT Stadium?

Rodney Reiners wants to know if Kaizer Chiefs will be playing three of their home games at Cape Town Stadium?

|||

We are still waiting for the City of Cape Town to confirm or deny whether they have invited Kaizer Chiefs to play three of their home games at the Cape Town Stadium.

The spin is that the City wants to make the former World Cup venue in Green Point “more financially viable” – but all the exercise of bringing Chiefs here will do is further alienate Cape football. The perception (or should that be reality) is that the City is sending a big, big “up-yours” to football clubs and footballers who live, breathe, eat and slave in this city.

We know the City is struggling to make the stadium work – or is the agenda political? Nevertheless, it’s another case of smug officials being completely out of tune with the sport.

Cape Town has hundreds of amateur football clubs and tens of thousands of amateur footballers – the most in the country. It has promising, ambitious teams in the Third, Second and First Divisions, and one in the elite Premier Soccer League (PSL). Yet, except for the use of grounds across the region, including Cape Town and Athlone Stadiums, which, of course is its duty as a public service to provide, ask any club or player what this City has done to aid the progress and development of football and they will say “Nothing”.

As Siviwe Mpengesi, the owner of Chippa United, told me in an interview just before he relocated his Philippi-based club to Port Elizabeth: “Football just doesn’t talk to Cape Town, and by that I include the government of the province and the city.”

Ask any other club boss or chairman in the City – be that amateur or professional – and they will echo that sentiment. When Cape football knocks on the City’s door, it opens ever so slightly, just to peek at who has had the audacity to knock, and then it shuts it firmly, and rudely…

Now, however, with their backs to the wall, under pressure after the disaster of the Cape Town Cup (which, by the way, was of their own making), the City seems to see Chiefs as some kind of stop-gap solution. Because, let’s face it, the Cape Town Cup could have worked, if only the City had consulted with Cape football – including Safa-CT and local clubs – but, in its egotistical wisdom it failed, yet again, to connect with Capetonians.

And this will keep on happening as long as the professional business of operating the stadium is run by amateur public officials with – to add again – political agendas.

Getting the City to admit that Chiefs have been invited has been a frustrating exercise in obfuscation, which, needless to say, leads to speculation about the real motives behind the current dalliance with the Soweto side.

So, let’s look at the process. According to PSL rules, by July 31 each year, clubs have to nominate a home venue and an alternate. Chiefs have nominated the FNB Stadium in Joburg, with their alternate venue being the Cape Town Stadium. Really?

That, alone, proves that Chiefs’ negotiation with the City has been ongoing for quite a while. And, what’s more, the Joburg team was so confident that the deal was a fait accompli that they were perfectly content to name Cape Town as their other venue.

Now, as the most popular and best-supported football club in the country, rest assured Chiefs are not coming down here for nothing. They will demand quite a hefty appearance fee. The Gauteng club has, of course, done this before, in that it has previously taken some of its home games to Polokwane or Port Elizabeth (for which they easily picked up in the region of R1-1,5 million per game – and that’s just as an appearance fee).

But have a glance at Chiefs’ record in the Mother City, results-wise, and it doesn’t make for satisfactory reading. If they have any designs on retaining their PSL title, Cape Town should be the last place they wish to play a few home games – because, with their inconsistent record here, they run the risk of dropping unnecessary points. Therefore, the very reason that Chiefs want to come here (or, indeed, are coming here) suggests that the City has made it worth their while. Question: Where is the money coming from?

And, as we have already seen with the ill-fated Cape Town Cup, the City has no idea how to market and promote a football event, nor how to engage with the ordinary man in the street when it comes to sport.

Ajax Cape Town, the Mother City’s PSL club, are understandably livid. After years and years of trying to make things work in the Cape, of more than a decade of creating a professional environment for talented young kids in the region to grow their game as footballers, the region in which the club resides would rather entertain a Gauteng club. As Ajax chief executive Ari Efstathiou says: “It’s a snub for Cape Town and Capetonians. This is a stadium built by the residents, for the people of Cape Town, and now the city is inviting an outside team to use the ground.”

Remember that, with Chiefs’ support-base, an Ajax-Chiefs fixture in the Cape is a big money-spinner for Ajax. It’s the one game the Parow club can rely on to generate some money for its coffers.

If Chiefs are coming here to play three of their home games, they will be in Cape Town for four games, which means there are no guarantees for Ajax. As such, Efstathiou and Ajax are already in the process of moving their fixture against Chiefs – on September 26 – to Port Elizabeth or East London (at great cost in terms of hire, travel and accommodation). Crazy, isn’t it? Cape club plays outside of the city; Joburg club invited to use Cape Town Stadium.

It’s a sad state of affairs. Football in this country is already overwhelmingly skewed in favour of Chiefs and Orlando Pirates. They lure the sponsors, they dominate the market… while other clubs scrounge to pick up the scraps left behind and try to make do as best they can, Chiefs and Pirates continue to get stronger, aided and abetted, of course, by the politically-correct climate that dominates everything in this country.

Yet, this very city in which we reside, where the City does very little to assist local football, it now wants to welcome, with open arms and enrich a team from another province – a club with its roots, allegiances and tax money in Gauteng.

So can the City please answer us? Are Chiefs coming here or not? Cape football clubs would love to know whether the up-yours is pointed in their direction? - Cape Argus

Rodgers defends playing style

Brendan Rodgers has defended the perceived change in Liverpool's playing style brought on by the inclusion of Christian Benteke.

|||

Brendan Rodgers has defended the perceived change in Liverpool's playing style brought on by the inclusion of Christian Benteke and said the tall Belgian striker gives his side an element of unpredictability they were lacking last season.

Liverpool travel to the Emirates Stadium to take on Arsenal on Monday night hoping to maintain their perfect start to the season after two 1-0 victories in their previous fixtures.

The six-foot-four-inch (1.93 metres) Benteke, who joined from Aston Villa for a reported 32.5 million pounds ($51 million) in the close season, scored on his first appearance at Anfield for the Merseyside club to secure three points against Bournemouth last week.

“When you bring in a certain profile of player, it gives you other options,” said Rodgers, who sold another tall target man in Andy Carroll after taking the reigns at Liverpool because the forward was deemed incompatible with the high-energy, quick passing style the manager wanted to implement.

“One of the key things in bringing Christian here was, first and foremost, that he can play football,” the manager said.

“As you see already, his touch is good. His ability to bring players into the game, whether that's with his feet or a little cushioned header, is a great skill,” the Northern Irishman added.

“What he gives us is that threat in the box; when the ball comes in, he's a striker that's in the area.

“There are other ways of keeping the game alive, but when you have a 6 foot 4 inch player like Christian when the ball comes into the box, because of his physicality and mobility it keeps the game alive that little bit longer,” Rodgers said.

The manager denied that the 24-year-old Belgian's inclusion had resulted in a departure from the playing style he has tried to establish at the club over the past three seasons.

“It wasn't the case that we were smashing the ball into the box and playing off a second ball. I'm not against that. There's not a compromise,” Rodgers said.

“I said at the beginning of the season that we want the unpredictability to our game.

“Our conditions of our game won't change but hopefully because of the different types of players we have, and different strikers in particular, it gives that unpredictability to our game, which is important,” he added. – Reuters

Everton lacked ‘know-how’ - Martinez

Roberto Martinez said he was disappointed with Everton’s reaction after conceding a “sloppy” first goal in their 2-0 loss to Manchester City.

|||

Everton manager Roberto Martinez said he was disappointed with his side's reaction after conceding a “sloppy” first goal in their 2-0 loss to Manchester City on Sunday, but that his team could take several positives from their first defeat of the season.

City's Raheem Sterling played in Aleksander Kolarov for the opener and the left-back beat Tim Howard at his near post after the Everton goalkeeper dived the wrong way in the Premier League contest.

“I think the first goal seemed to be too important today,” Martinez said.

“We always knew it was going to be an important one playing against a quality side, but I think it affected us a little bit too much,” the manager added.

“It comes from us being very sloppy on the ball and us giving them a counter-attack, which ended up in the back of our net and that gave them a real sense of control,” the Spaniard said.

“I thought up to that goal, especially in the first half, we probably had the best moments in the game.

“We defended really well ... but we didn't have our normal composure or the know-how that we usually carry,” Martinez added.

“In terms of effort and the way in which we had a proper face-to-face confrontation with a team, who, in my eyes, are the best in the league at the moment ... we can take a lot of positives from that,” the 42-year-old said.

The manager also confirmed that left-back Brendan Galloway was withdrawn during the first half due to a knee injury and that Costa Rican Bryan Oviedo was ready to return for the first time since April after breaking a bone in his right foot.

“Brendan has been terrific and we as a football club are ready to give young players an opportunity,” Martinez told the club website (www.evertonfc.com).

“He picked up a patella tendon problem that we'll assess in the next 24 to 48 hours. It's probably more to do with his age and the fact he's still growing rather than a structural injury.

“Bryan Oviedo is fully fit and needs a bit of match fitness now. Hopefully we'll see him on the pitch very soon,” Martinez added. – Reuters

United will start scoring - Shaw

Manchester United’s Luke Shaw is certain they will bounce back from the disappointment of their goalless draw against Newcastle United.

|||

Manchester United defender Luke Shaw is certain his side will bounce back from the disappointment of Saturday's goalless draw against Newcastle United when they face Club Bruges in their Champions League qualifier.

The Red Devils head to Belgium for the second leg on Wednesday with a 3-1 lead over the Belgian champions, courtesy of a brace from new signing Memphis Depay.

But the Dutch forward was part of an attacking United unit who struggled to break down Newcastle at Old Trafford on Saturday, with striker Wayne Rooney again having a quiet game.

“We've got a game just around the corner (against Bruges) and I think it's only good for us. We'll get back up and try to win that game,” the 20-year-old Shaw told the club's website(www.manutd.com).

“I think it's the best thing for us, when we feel that we've dropped two points. It's very important that there's another game and it's even more important that we try to win it.

“I'm sure we'll start scoring many goals soon. We've got so much quality up front that it's only a matter of time before someone puts one away and we'll be flying again,” the former Southampton defender added.

Shaw, part of a United backline that has yet to concede a goal in three Premier League outings, said he was disappointed his side did not convert their chances, especially during a bright opening. Defender Chris Smalling also hit the post late in the game.

“With the chances we created in the first 20 minutes, I think if we'd put one of those away, it would have been game over for Newcastle,” the England international said.

“I think they wouldn't have been able to get back into the game if they were a goal down, they wouldn't have sat back like they did in the last 20 or 30 minutes. Everyone's really disappointed in the dressing room.

“I think we created so many chances and, unfortunately, we didn't put them away,” he added. – Reuters

Benitez bemoans Real’s lack of accuracy

Real Madrid's new coach Rafa Benitez was left frustrated after his side could only manage a 0-0 draw at promoted Sporting Gijon.

|||

Madrid - Real Madrid's new coach Rafa Benitez complained of a lack of shooting accuracy among his players after his return to La Liga was spoiled by a 0-0 draw at promoted Sporting Gijon in their opening match of the campaign on Sunday.

Real had scores of chances at the Molinon against a team with a fraction of their resources but could not find a way past Gijon goalkeeper Ivan Cuellar, the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Jese all drawing a blank.

James Rodriguez made little impact when he replaced Jese in the second half, while fullbacks Danilo and Marcelo were largely ineffective when they attacked down the wings.

“I knew it was going to be a match in which Sporting made things hard for us,” Benitez, who has had stints at clubs including Liverpool, Chelsea and Napoli since leaving Valencia in 2004, told reporters.

“There were a lot of shots but without precision and in the first half we allowed them to get into the game,” added the 55-year-old, who has taken over from the sacked Carlo Ancelotti.

“We have to improve things, we have to work more. We were lacking the final pass and skill in our execution in attack.”

Real are hoping to improve on a 2014-15 season under Ancelotti in which they failed to win the Champions League, La Liga or the King's Cup.

Benitez has returned to club where he featured as a player and coach in the youth academy and is seeking to deny arch rivals Barcelona, who won the treble last season, their sixth La Liga title in eight years.

Barca got their La Liga campaign off to a winning start earlier on Sunday with a 1-0 success at Athletic Bilbao.

Benitez said his players had reacted well in the second half against Gijon and that he remained upbeat about Real's chances of lifting silverware this term.

“The players showed character and personality and in the second half were clearly going after the game,” he told reporters.

“What I have clear in my mind is that this is just the beginning,” he added. “We have to keep making adjustments. I am still optimistic.” – Reuters

City looking ominous

Manchester City's impressive 2-0 victory at Everton equalled a club record of nine successive Premier League wins.

|||

London - Manchester City's impressive 2-0 victory at Everton on Sunday equalled a club record of nine successive Premier League wins but more importantly sent an ominous warning to their rivals.

City have yet to drop a point since a humbling 4-2 defeat away to bitter local rivals United in early April.

Given last season's underwhelming campaign, which ended with an eight-point deficit to champions Chelsea, few had talked about City as title favourites in the build-up this time.

Three successive wins, however, including a 3-0 victory at home to Chelsea, has catapulted City to the top of the fledgling table and sent an ominous warning that they mean business.

“Before the game someone told me that if we win today it is a new record after so many years,” manager Manuel Pellegrini, whose side have scored eight goals and conceded none, told Sky Sports.

“That is secondary but they are always important. But it is more important to be top of the table and the most important thing is to see the team playing the way we are doing.

“I am pleased because it was a very professional performance against a very difficult team here at Goodison Park.

“In the first half and the second half we were very consistent and we had more chances to score goals than Everton.

“We scored two goals and again we kept a clean sheet so I think we are working very well as a team in attack and defence.”

Crucial to their impressive start, which has put them two points clear on nine, is the form of their leading quartet Vincent Kompany, Yaya Toure, David Silva and Sergio Aguero.

Kompany, who has guided City to three clean sheets and scored twice, and Yaya Toure appear back to their dominant best following a disappointing season last year.

Silva and Aguero have also been in mesmerising form, carving open opposition defences and creating chances at will.

Close-season signing Raheem Sterling from Liverpool has already formed a strong partnership with fullback Aleksandar Kolarov, scorer of the opening goal on Sunday, and the pair have been central to much of City's best play this year.

“We have a good squad,” Pellegrini added after substitute Samir Nasri had scored a late second goal. “We have all the players involved in our target which is to play in the way we are doing so far.

“Now after Watford (at home on Saturday) we are going to start playing eight games every month so it is important to have the whole squad involved in our targets this year.

“It is very important to understand we are just starting the season and it is just three games.” – Reuters

Ten-man Chelsea hang on for victory

Chelsea held on with 10 men to claim their first win of the PL season at West Brom on Sunday.

|||

London – Chelsea survived almost 40 minutes with 10 men to claim their first Premier League victory of the season with a 3-2 win at West Bromwich Albion on Sunday.

New signing Pedro was among the scorers for the champions as Chelsea led 3-1 but after captain John Terry was sent off, James Morrison’s second goal meant the visitors had to cling on for three points.

Morrison missed a penalty for West Brom on 14 minutes before Pedro and Diego Costa made it 2-0 to Chelsea after half-an-hour.

Morrison pulled one six minutes later but Cezar Azpilicueto restored the advantage three minutes before the break.

Terry was sent off for pulling back Salomon Rondon nine minutes into the second half and Morrison halved the deficit five minutes later.

West Brom chased the equaliser and Rondon forced a good late save from Thibaut Courtois as Chelsea hung on to move into the top half while West Brom fall to the bottom of the table.

Later on Sunday, Manchester City, with two wins out of two, can go top if they win at Everton.

Disappointing debut for Drogba

Didier Drogba made a tame MLS debut for Montreal in their home loss to Philadelphia on Saturday.

|||

New York – Former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba made a tame MLS debut for Montreal in their 1-0 home loss to Philadelphia Union on Saturday.

The former Ivory Coast player entered the game in the 59th minute to a standing ovation from the Montreal crowd but had his night spoiled in the end.

Philadelphia’s Sebastien Le Toux scored the winner in the 78th minute on an assist from Eric Ayuk Mbu, ending their five-game winless streak.

For the night, Drogba had two shots and two fouls in his 31 minutes for Montreal.

“I thought he brought a presence in the team,” Montreal coach Frank Klopas told reporters. “I just think we’ve got to find a better way to use him. That’s going to take time.”

In other MLS matches, Vancouver regained first place in the Western Conference with a 1-0 win over FC Dallas.

Cristian Techera back-heeled in a goal in the 32nd minute for the Whitecaps who moved two points above Los Angeles.

Meanwhile, Real Salt Lake got goals from Javier Morales and Sebastian Jaime to beat Seattle Sounders 2-0.

In Toronto, Jozy Altidore scored two goals in about 18 minutes of play to lead Toronto FC to a 5-0 rout over Orlando City SC.

In Columbus, Jack McInerney’s 88th minute strike lifted the Crew to a 3-2 victory over Sporting Kansas City.

Tony Tchani tied the game 2-2 eight minutes earlier for the Crew.

In Washington, the San Jose Earthquakes got goals from Chris Wondolowski and Shea Salinas to beat DC United 2-0.

In Chicago, Dillon Serna scored in the opening minute as Colorado beat Chicago Fire 1-0 to snap a three-game losing streak. – Reuters

NFD season opens with goal flurry

It has been goals galore in the opening round of the NFD season, with at least 18 scored on Saturday.

|||

Johannesburg – It was goals galore in the opening round of the National First Division, with at least 18 scored on Saturday.

AmaZulu won 1-0 at home to Witbank Spurs and Moroka Swallows went down 2-0 at Cape Town All Stars.

Black Leopards who made it to the promotion play-offs at the end of last season, completed a 2-0 win over Milano United.

In a five-goal affair, African Warriors edged FC Cape Town 3-2. That would not be the highest scoring match of the opening round, however, as Mbombela United and Thanda Royal Zulu played out to a scintillating 3-3 draw.

In the final match of the day, Highlands Park drew 1-1 with Royal Eagles.

Bucs book Confed semi spot

The Pirates booked their place in the Caf Confed Cup semis to make history on Saturday.

|||

Johannesburg – Orlando Pirates booked their place in the semi-finals of the Caf Confederation Cup for the first time in the club’s history after beating Congo’s AC Leopards here on Saturday night.

Goals from Mpho Makola in the first half, and Oupa Manyisa late in the match saw the Sea Robbers progress in this continental cup competition, though a draw would have been enough for them to reach the semis.

AC Leopards looked threatening in the first 25 minutes. The Congolese outfit came highly motivated and played some attacking football.

And rightly so, they had beaten Zamalek 1-0 on home turf a fortnight ago, ending their three-game unbeaten run in Group B building up to this clash.

Pirates’ first chance at goal came in the fifth minute when Kermit Erasmus played a brilliant cross into the box to find Thamsanqa Gabuza. The striker, however, failed to give Pirates an early lead.

Three minutes later, Leopards responded with an attacking move of their own. However, Cesair Gandze’s shot did not trouble Pirates goalkeeper Filipe Ovono as it went way over the crossbar.

Erasmus then produced another sublime pass 18 minutes into the game to find midfielder Sifiso Myeni who was unmarked outside the box. Myeni’s shot, however, was deflected for a corner.

Pirates kept on asking questions with some dazzling attacking moves but it was their finishing that let them down.

The Buccaneers scored their opener when Mpho Makola coolly converted after a cross from Erasmus in the 33rd minute.

Pirates should have gone 2-0 up at the stroke of half-time when Manyisa’s pass for Makola was intercepted by Erasmus who was in an offside position.

The Sea Robbers continued the momentum they had built in the first half. Gabuza missed three scoring chances in quick succession. The first came just five minutes after the break.

The striker’s diving header went wide after Myeni spotted him inside the danger zone.

Gabuza then went on a blistering run in the 72nd minute beating two opponents but his shot was blocked by Leopards goalkeeper Lawrence Ngoe.

Seven minutes later, there was more frustration for Gabuza as Ngoe pulled off yet another sterling save.

Skipper Manyisa made it 2-0 three minutes before full-time following a teasing cross from Lehlohonolo Majoro who came on in the 74th minute for Erasmus.

Pirates have been on a high after their first Group B defeat at the hands of Zamalek 2-1 at Mbombela Stadium.

For Pirates, though, that defeat came with many lessons which helped improve their game. They have since worked on keeping their shape at the back as they move forward.

They have also been technically and tactically disciplined.

Their latter performances in the group stage, both against CS Sfaxien, showed they had mastered the art of winning games.

And yesterday Pirates were brilliant, putting together a string of passes.

Bucs brought on playmaker Thabo “Jomo” Rakhale for Myeni and midfielder Thandani Ntshumayelo replaced Gabuza late in the second half.

Pirates meet Zamalek in a fortnight’s time in Egypt in the final group match.

Amakhosi shoot down the Stars

The Chiefs, helped by two own goals, powered their way to an emphatic win against the Stars.

|||

Johannesburg – Kaizer Chiefs, helped by two own goals, powered their way to an emphatic 4-0 victory against Free State Stars at the FNB Stadium on Saturday.

It was a dominant performance and three points for Chiefs who drew their first PSL game and would have pleased coach Steve Komphela, who was up against his former team.

Chiefs dominated the early stages of the game when Bernard Parker came close to scoring but was shut out by a defence which seemed to be struggling.

It was only in the 17th minute when Stars broke the shackles after some slack defending, but Danny Venter’s shot was blocked.

A few minutes later Stars broke again and Itumeleng Khune was forced to make a good save with an outflung leg when Sthembiso Ngcobo got hold of a pass and fired on target. This seemed to wake up Chiefs who continued to plug away, forcing a few corners.

Stars though were looking more comfortable midway through the first half, pushing the ball around in midfield but they were stunned in the 34th minute.

Siboniso Gaxa galloped down the right flank, crossed to a crowded penalty area only to see his shot deflected into the net off the legs off Robert Sankara for an unfortunate own goal.

But there was nothing wrong about the second goal in the 42nd minute. Siphiwe Tshabalala weaved his way through some defenders on the right, slid a perfect slide rule pass across goal for George Lebese to tuck it past goalkeeper Johnny Mathole and into the net off the left upright.

If that was not bad enough, Stars imploded again just on the first half whistle when Liberty Chakoroma had a moment of madness when, trying to defend ball from Parker, he powered a shot into his own net much to the shock of his goalkeeper – and no doubt his fellow players.

With the game more or less over as a contest, the second half was played without much purpose with the Amakhosi seemingly content to play it safe and knock it around the park.

But Chiefs were soon making Stars suffer again when Tshabalala got hold of a ball just outside the penalty area and sent a looping volley into the top corner of the net for the fourth goal. He could have had another a minute later but was thwarted by an outstretched Mathole.

United held to draw by Newcastle

Manchester United's 100% start to the season ended after they were held to a goalless draw against Newcastle United.

|||

London - Manchester United's 100 percent start to the Premier League season ended when they were held to a goalless draw against Newcastle United at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Wayne Rooney had an early goal ruled out for offside as United, 1-0 winners in their opening two league games, dominated but it was Newcastle who went closest to scoring in the first half when Aleksandar Mitrovic hit the crossbar.

Substitutes Javier Hernandez and Antonio Valencia then had opportunities to snatch a late goal for the home team who are top of the table with seven points.

"It was a very important result for us," said defender Fabricio Coloccini as Newcastle ended a run of seven successive away league defeats. "We worked really hard.

"It's very hard to play at Old Trafford because they have a lot of possession," he told BT Sport. "We were told to defend as well as possible and we did really well."

United captain Rooney has made a mediocre start to the season but began brightly against Newcastle, having a sixth-minute goal chalked off.

Juan Mata was twice denied by goalkeeper Tim Krul and Memphis Depay was a constant threat but United nearly conceded against the run of play when Newcastle's close-season signing Mitrovic rattled the bar with a thunderous header.

After their high-octane start, United finished the half on the back foot as Newcastle's Ayoze Perez saw his shot squirm narrowly past the post.

United manager Louis van Gaal cut a frustrated figure at the break and his side did little to alleviate his discontent in the second.

The hosts handed a first league start to World Cup winner Bastian Schweinsteiger and the German was solid yet unspectacular before being substituted in the 59th minute.

The game burst into life with a frantic final 10 minutes as Hernandez was denied by a fine Krul save before man-of-the-match Coloccini produced a superb block to thwart Valencia.

Chris Smalling headed against the post for United while Papiss Cisse was just wide after a counter-attack by Newcastle who have two points from three matches.

Later on Saturday, Leicester City take their 100 percent record into a home game with Tottenham Hotspur, Stoke City visit Norwich City and Crystal Palace entertain Aston Villa.

Sunderland and promoted Bournemouth, occupying the bottom two places in the table, search for their first points against Swansea City and West Ham United respectively.

United can still attract anybody - LVG

Louis van Gaal insists Manchester United’s pulling power remains as strong as ever.

|||

London - Louis van Gaal insists Manchester United’s pulling power remains as strong as ever and has indicated that it was their decision to walk away from a £21million deal for Pedro.

Chelsea jumped in to buy the Barcelona star earlier this week while Valencia defender Nicolas Otamendi, another player strongly linked with United this summer, joined Manchester City for £28.5m.

It has led to criticism of Old Trafford chief Ed Woodward, who is understood to have flown to Barcelona on Monday in an attempt to sign Pedro, with the player’s agent Antonio Sanz yesterday claiming that United ‘fell asleep’ over the deal.

However, Van Gaal defended Woodward and gave a clear indication that United could have signed Pedro and Otamendi had they wished.

He said: ‘I have the idea that you want to separate Ed Woodward and me. Never. Every day I am updated by him and I trust him. I don’t think that people have to doubt him because he has proven for many years that he is the right person in the right spot.

‘When we wanted Pedro it was not any problem. There was a clause in his contract so it was the most easy transfer. What we are doing is guiding a process and in that process we make decisions.

‘I have never spoken about any defender and you are asking me about Otamendi. Also that Manchester City was quicker than Manchester United.

‘I think when Manchester United want a player he shall come, except when the club are not selling. It is the same with us when we are not selling (David) de Gea.’

Despite United’s hardline stance over De Gea in the face of persistent interest from Real Madrid, the goalkeeper’s future remains in the balance with 10 days of the transfer window remaining.

Van Gaal, who would not be drawn on his interest in Southampton’s Sadio Mane, reiterated that the decision to keep De Gea out of action would not be assessed until the window closes on the first day of September.

Mane has told Saints boss Ronald Koeman he wants to stay at St Mary’s despite interest from United. Asked whether Mane (left) had told him he wants to remain at Southampton, Koeman said: ‘Yes. He wants to stay. He knows that there’s no bid for the player. His agent knows. I know. Everybody knows.’

Meanwhile, Van Gaal praised Wayne Rooney for admitting that he has endured a poor start to the season after being restored to centre forward, but expressed surprise that his captain has been so candid.

‘It starts with the player himself as he has to admit that he is bad and then he can improve,’ said Van Gaal.

‘When you are saying so publicly that you are bad, then you know that you are very bad at that time. I think it’s fantastic that a player will admit that.

‘It’s also for me unbelievable because he is one of the few players who is saying those things because there can be a threat of pressure from the media after a few weeks. He takes a risk, I think.’

Rooney also received support from Steve McClaren, the Newcastle manager who hopes to end United’s 100 per cent start to the season at Old Trafford this lunchtime.

McClaren said: ‘Unfortunately, he is one of those types - whatever he does, he will be criticised. But believe me, he won’t give a damn about that.’

Business as usual, says Shabba

It’s been eight years since Siphiwe Tshabalala left Free State Stars, and the Amakhosi skipper still has a soft spot for the team.

Johannesburg - It’s been eight years since Siphiwe Tshabalala left Free State Stars, and the Amakhosi skipper still has a soft spot for the team that put him in the limelight.

After all, it was at Stars where he made his mark, getting his first national call up while the club were still playing in the National First Division (NFD).

“Free State Stars gave me an opportunity to shine and show what I can do. It is the team where I established myself. I am truly thankful and I will be forever grateful to them. But now I am at Kaizer Chiefs. This is my home; I have been here for eight years. So for me it is business as usual, but I will always have respect for Free State Stars,” Tshabalala said.

Shabba and Chiefs host Stars at the FNB Stadium on Saturday (kick-off 8.15pm).

Unlike in their league opener when they played to a goalless draw with Chippa United, a side easily dismantled 4-1 by their nemesis Orlando Pirates, who had a sloppy start to the season with a 1-0 loss to Supersport United, Chiefs want their strikers to be lethal.

With Chiefs yet to register maximum points in this campaign, Tshabalala believes teams want a win over Chiefs, and the league has toughened up with all the clubs having something to play for this campaign.

“They want to stop the train.

“They know what the team is capable of and they also want to win the league. It is going to be a battle, and some want to be in the top three, while others will want to avoid relegation. So I am anticipating a tough season.

“Challenges are good for everyone. It helps us grow.

“I think teams have beefed up their personnel.

“Pirates have a strong team, Sundowns have a strong team. SuperSport and Wits have a spring in their step.

“So it is not only three teams that one needs to look at. It shows the standard of our league and strength of the PSL has grown,” Tshabalala said.

Tshabalala will not be the only one at Chiefs looking forward to a “reunion” with the Free State outfit.

His coach, Steve Komphela, will also be facing a team he had two spells with between 2008 and 2013.

“It will also be good for the coach to help the team beat his former club.

“It will be his first home game against Stars. We will work hard and do well, hopefully to win it for him.”

No Surprise, Downs’ veteran Moriri upbeat

He may have lost some pace, but Surprise Moriri says retirement is not even on his mind.

Johannesburg - Living legend Surprise Moriri is the envy of many a footballer.

Moriri, one of the most decorated players in the PSL, boasts a glittering resumé riddled with prestigious accolades. The Mamelodi Sundowns poster boy’s living room glitters with three PSL championship medals, one SAA Supa Eight medal and two Nedbank Cup medals.

Throughout his career, spanning over a decade, Moriri has amassed massive personal accolades as well.

In 2006 he walked away with the PSL Player of the Season and PSL Players’ Player of the Season awards. Moriri also donned the Bafana Bafana jersey 34 times. He was a member of the Bafana squad at the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2010 Fifa World Cup.

With such honours and at the age of 35, the usual retirement age, the questions is: what’s still left for Moriri to achieve?

“Obviously I want more trophies and to win the CAF Champions League. We are going back to the Champions League and we want to do well,” said Moriri.

He may have lost a yard of pace, but Moriri says retirement is not even on his mind since his legs can still carry him.

The rigorous demands of football means Moriri’s recovery after intense matches and training sessions is not as quick as it used to be. The midfield genius says he has adapted to taking things easy.

“Fortunately the supporting staff have been helping me. They have been managing me very well in terms of reco-vering and other things. I make sure I rest a lot and that after a hard session I go through a recovery process,” said the man from Matibidi in Mpumala-nga.

Moriri is the most experienced player in Pitso Mosimane’s team having played at the club since 2004. The Downs fan favourite, who has fans singing songs about him during matches, knows it won’t be easy to feature prominently in a team that has many midfielders. Among his responsibilities is to mentor youngsters in Mosimane’s team, though.

“My role is to help youngsters understand what the team is all about and the pressure that comes with playing for Sundowns. Make sure you calm them down so they focus on the game. They must know we are on the field to win,” said Moriri.

“What motivates me is that there are a lot of youngsters looking up to me so there’s no reason to drop the standard and give up. If they see me giving up, it means I am letting them down. I must always give my best.”

This afternoon Sundowns take on Bidvest Wits in what is expected to be a tough league encounter at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville.

Moriri may not be an outright starter but he will be a part of the proceedings as Downs will throw all they have in order to see off the challenge.

Moriri believes victory over Wits will come in handy as they psyche themselves up for what is going to be a torrid season.

“It’s always a tough game against Wits, one of the teams that will be competing for the league. We need to go out there and give our best. We must focus for the 90 minutes,” said the former Platinum Stars player.

“It’s going to be very tough. If you look at all the teams, Wits have beefed up. They want to do better than last season.”
