Chelsea not missing Cech - Jose

Jose Mourinho says Chelsea do not miss goalkeeper Petr Cech and is sure his side will cope well without the suspended Thibaut Courtois.

|||

Jose Mourinho has said Chelsea do not miss goalkeeper Petr Cech and is sure his side will cope well without the suspended Thibaut Courtois when they visit Manchester City on Sunday.

Mourinho was not keen on allowing the 33-year-old Cech to join London rivals Arsenal after 11 successful seasons with the champions, but the manager insists he is happy with the goalkeeping options at his disposal.

“We don't miss Petr,” Mourinho was quoted as saying by the British media. “We've got a good keeper, the problem with Petr is not that we miss him because we have two excellent keepers.

“The problem with Petr is that an opponent is better than before.”

Cech opted to move to Arsenal after finding himself playing second fiddle to Belgian international Courtois, who Chelsea recalled from loan at Atletico Madrid last season.

Chelsea bought Stoke City keeper Asmir Begovic as a back-up to Courtois following Cech's transfer.

“Thibaut and Asmir are two fantastic keepers. My club did very well by getting a keeper on time and not on the August 31,” Mourinho added.

Courtois is banned for the match at the Etihad Stadium after he was sent off against Swansea for a foul on striker Bafetimbi Gomis, which earned their opponents a penalty and allowed them to draw the game 2-2. – Reuters

Amakhosi frustrated by Chilli Boys

Kaiser Chiefs began the 2015/16 campaign with a share of the spoils against a 10-man Chippa United side.

|||

If getting to the top is hard, staying there is even harder and this much Ama-khosi will be quick to appreciate as they strive to hold on to the Absa Premiership title.

Chiefs began the 2015/16 campaign with a share of the spoils against a 10-man Chippa United side that hardly afforded the champions any respect.

And as it was, the Chilli Boys could so easily have stolen all three points were it not for the alertness and bravery of prodigal son Itumeleng Khune.

The goalkeeper denied Chippa captain James Owuosa what would probably having been the winner on 73 minutes. A beautifully floated free-kick by Eric Chipeta from the right landed flush on the Nigerian defender’s head and he redirected the ball back across goal towards the far corner but Khune stretched his foot to keep it out.

Then five minutes from time Khune showed his bravery when he dived low to block a threatening attack after Mark Mayambela had threaded through a fantastic low pass.

At the venue where they were crowned last season, Chiefs would have been the favourites of many to grab maximum points following their splendid showing midweek when they came from 2-0 down to beat Maritzburg United 5-3 in the MTN8 quarter-finals. But Chippa had other ideas and took the game to the visitors from the outset with Mayambela, Rhulani Manzini and Joseph Malongoane at the forefront of their attacks.

Yet when Malongoane got his marching orders some 10 minutes before the break, it looked like the tide would turn Chiefs’ way and they’d begin their championship defence on a winning note.

And they nearly did when Siphiwe Tshabalala delivered a fantastic shot from the edge of the box to beat Dalyan Hayes in the Chippa goal only for the ball to bounce off the crossbar.

But before that Chippa had been very impressive as they asked questions of the Chiefs defence, Mayambela wasting a free-kick and then working his way into the box but delivering a poor final cross.

Their pacy attacks and great passing allowed Roger Sikhakhane’s team to open up Amakhosi’s defence and there were moments when Siyanda Xulu and Erick Mathoho looked a bit shaky.

But once they found their footing and Malongoane was sent off, Chiefs took control of the match and found their way into the opposition’s danger area.

David Zulu had a chance to open up for Chiefs but dilly-dallied with the ball inside the box and got dispossessed following splendid combination play between Bernard Parker and Reneilwe Letsholonyane. But Chippa held firm and hardly looked like they were outnumbered as they tries to catch Chiefs on the break.

Yet even with the changes both sides made, the goals were not forthcoming and left the two sides having to be content with the single point – Chippa no doubt pleased but Chiefs aware of just how hard it will be to hold on to their title.

In the other game yesterday Rodney Ramagalela netted the winner as 10-man Golden Arrows held on for a hard-fought 1-0 win against Tuks. - The Star

Wenger refuses to blame Cech

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger refused to blame goalkeeper Petr Cech for their 2-0 defeat to West Ham United.

|||

London - Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger refused to blame goalkeeper Petr Cech or any individual performances after his side sank to a disappointing 2-0 defeat by West Ham United in their opening Premier League match of the season on Sunday.

Cech's arrival after an 11-year trophy-laden spell at Chelsea was met with great optimism by supporters and hailed as the missing piece in Arsenal's quest for a first Premier League title since 2004.

But the Czech international was far from his commanding best at the Emirates, failing to deal with Dimitri Payet's free kick in the build-up to Cheikhou Kouyate's header before being beaten at his near post by Mauro Zarate's low strike.

“I haven't spoken to him (Cech) yet,” Wenger told reporters. “I can't see many individual convincing performances today so it's difficult to single someone out.

“It was a collective one. I think there are many things to say about that. I knew that if the delivery was good, we would be in trouble before the free kick was taken.

“We have enough experience at the back. If you look at our back line, I think the youngest age is 30.”

The Gunners were hoping to make a flying start and show that they are serious contenders to challenge for Chelsea crown.

Against Slaven Bilic's well-organised West Ham, however, Arsenal struggled to impose themselves and Wenger was frustrated with the way his team went about their business.

“I think our performance was not convincing,” the Frenchman said. “I felt we were a bit nervous and we rushed our game a bit.

“We didn't always respect the basics. We wanted to be too quick going forward in first half.

“I don't think we were too confident, I would rather say too nervous maybe.

“On top of that, I feel we gave two very cheap goals away and they were at the wrong moments - just before and after halftime.

“We gave ourselves a mountain to climb.”

Arsenal travel to Crystal Palace next Sunday before hosting Liverpool and Wenger has urged his side to bounce back quickly.

“It's difficult but it's part of our job,” he said. “A successful season is how you respond to disappointments and it's never a clear motorway.

“We have to respond quickly. We have a tricky start.” – Reuters

Coutinho bags points for Reds

Philippe Coutinho’s exquisite late strike sealed a 1-0 Premier League win for Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool at Stoke City.

|||

London - Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers was ready to substitute Philippe Coutinho just before the Brazilian's exquisite late strike sealed a 1-0 Premier League win at Stoke City on Sunday.

Coutinho, who played only one pre-season game due to his late return after featuring for Brazil at the Copa America, was set to be replaced by Danny Ings as Liverpool searched for a winner.

But with four minutes remaining, Coutinho shrugged off the challenges of two Stoke players before hammering a shot from distance past goalkeeper Jack Butland.

“I was very close to taking him off,” Rodgers told reporters.

“We were looking at making a positive change - so he was going to come off and we were going to put Danny Ings on.

“It was a great strike to win the game.

“I'm glad I kept him on.”

Liverpool finished a disappointing sixth last season and Rodgers received criticism from disgruntled supporters, but the Northern Irishman kept his job following an end-of-season review by the club's American owners.

Rodgers revamped his squad over the close season and new signings Christian Benteke, midfielder James Milner and defenders Nathaniel Clyne and Joe Gomez all started at the Britannia Stadium.

Liverpool face all of last season's top five away before the end of November in a tricky run of fixtures, but Rodgers praised the way his new recruits had handled an always combative Stoke.

“The players that we brought in have that character,” Rodgers said.

“Look at Benteke up front; people talk about him only being a player that can play off a long ball, but you saw his quality today - his setup of the game, his movement, his strength, his power and that ability in the air.

“Young Joe Gomez, at 18 years of age, playing against a really good player in Jonathan Walters, I thought he handled it and as the game wore on he became even stronger.

“Nathaniel Clyne has been outstanding since he came in, James Milner has that experience.”

Liverpool were humiliated 6-1 by Stoke on the final day of last season and Rodgers was delighted to be able to right a few wrongs.

“I knew it was a one-off but it still happened and you have to be better and be more resolute,” he said.

“It was a very good victory for us.” – Reuters

W Ham bring Gunners down to earth

West Ham capitalised on two errors from Arsenal’s new goalkeeper to claim a surprise win on Sunday.

|||

London – West Ham United capitalised on two mistakes from Arsenal’s new goalkeeper Petr Cech to claim a surprise 2-0 victory at the Emirates and bring the Gunners’ early Premier League optimism down to earth with a bump on Sunday.

Cech, signed from Premier League champions Chelsea during the close season, came flying out to punch Dimitri Payet’s free kick just before halftime but was beaten to the ball by the head of West Ham’s Cheikhou Kouyate.

Mauro Zarate doubled West Ham’s advantage in the 57th minute when his low strike beat Cech at his near post as former West Ham player Slaven Bilic enjoyed victory in his first Premier League match as a manager.

Newcastle United also have a new manager in Steve McClaren and the former England coach’s first league match in charge ended in a 2-2 draw against Southampton at St James’ Park.

Later on Sunday, Liverpool have an immediate opportunity to avenge a 6-1 loss to Stoke City on the final day of last season with a return to the Britannia Stadium. – Reuters

Baines injury blow for Toffees

Everton’s Leighton Baines could be sidelined for a significant period after suffering a freak training injury.

|||

London – Everton left-back Leighton Baines could be sidelined for a significant period after sustaining a freak training ground injury to his surgically-repaired ankle, manager Roberto Martinez has said.

The England international missed Everton’s 2-2 draw with Watford in their Premier League opener on Saturday after picking up the injury in training.

“We don’t know how long he will be out for, but it has been a real disaster,” the BBC quoted Martinez as saying.

The 30-year-old defender had surgery on the ankle in May and missed the tailend of the Premier League season as well as England’s European Championship qualifier against Slovenia.

“Everything had been perfect in Leighton’s programme and he worked extremely hard in pre-season,” Martinez told Everton’s website. “He looked refreshed, he looked strong and he look at a really, really good level.

“Then, in training, he blocks a ball and it hits him exactly in the same area where he had surgery, with the unfortunate result that he’s going to be out for a while.”

Martinez also has concerns over the fitness of Kevin Mirallas, who left the field in the 77th minute after a heavy tackle from Watford’s Valon Behrami.

“He wanted to stay on the pitch, clearly. But he had a really nasty tackle and we’re going to be assessing him in the next 48 hours,” added Martinez.

Everton got off to a slow start against promoted Watford and Martinez thought his side lacked intensity throughout the first half.

Miguel Layun gave the visitors a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute and Everton toiled until Martinez brought on forward Arouna Kone in the 63rd minute.

Ross Barkley scored a sensational equalizer 14 minutes from the end before Watford went 2-1 up through Odion Ighalo in the 83rd minute.

Kone drew Everton level just a minute later and Martinez said the goal could be a turning point for the forward, who has struggled to regain form after a serious knee injury in 2013.

“Arouna Kone arrived at Everton and I don’t know if a black cat crossed his path at Finch Farm (Everton’s training ground), but everything went against him,” said Martinez.

“He was never able to get the momentum or luck and nobody got to see the best of Arouna.

“When he came on the pitch, you could see he had to win the crowd over and I was delighted for him. He came up with a quality finish - that’s one of his strengths, running into the box and finding that corner.

“I feel it can be a turning point and I hope everyone at Everton can see what he can bring to the team.”

Walker own goal gifts United win

The Premier League kicked off in unique fashion as an own goal by Spurs' Kyle Walker gave Manchester United a victory.

|||

London - The Premier League kicked off in unique fashion on Saturday as an own goal by Tottenham Hotspur's Kyle Walker gave Manchester United a 1-0 victory in an undistinguished season opener at Old Trafford.

Never before had English football's top flight competition begun with a player putting past his own keeper until full back Walker inadvertently prodded the ball past Michel Vorm in the 22nd minute when desperately trying to dispossess Wayne Rooney.

Tottenham had dominated until then but the goal helped United, with five expensive debutants in their ranks, relax as the Londoners' verve deserted them until a late attacking flurry was repelled by the hosts' new Argentine keeper Sergio Romero.

Even if the fare was mediocre, three points on a warm, muggy lunchtime was the ideal start for manager Louis van Gaal after a huge close season investment took United's spending to about 230 million pounds ($356.39 million) in his 12 months at the helm.

Romero made three important late saves while Italian defender Matteo Darmian, French midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin and Dutch striker Memphis Depay also made useful first starts, with United's Germany World Cup-winner Bastian Schweinsteiger coming on for the last half-hour and getting booked.

Local is lekker in fascinating PSL battle

As we go into the 19th season since the advent of the PSL, the most pleasing thing is the fact that local coaches dominate.

|||

Johannesburg - As we go into the 19th season since the advent of the Premiership was ushered back in 1996, the most pleasing thing is the fact that local coaches dominate.

Of the 16 teams that will attempt to be crowned Absa Premiership champions, only three have non-South Africans at the helm.

It is probably safe to predict that a local coach will win the championship this season, with the three foreign coaches in charge of clubs that cannot be classified as title contenders.

With due respect to Muhsin Ertugral, Kosta Papic and Kinnah Phiri, it will take some miracle for Black Aces, Polokwane City and Free State Stars to finish top of the table come the end of May.

The big question then is whether we are going to have a maiden championship-winning coach or will the usual suspects triumph once more.

Fascinatingly, the previous 18 seasons have produced a mere 10 winning coaches, two of which were jointly in charge. Of those 10, just four were local - one of them having won the title in conjunction with a foreigner.

Pleasingly, however, is the fact that those four coaches accounted for half of the 18 titles, Gordon Igesund having won a joint-record four, Gavin Hunt three, Pitso Mosimane a single and Neil Tovey one, albeit jointly.

The first three coaches are once again in the mix for this season and are perhaps the best bet to stop Steve Komphela adding his name to the list of local Premiership winners by helping Kaizer Chiefs retain their title.

It makes for an exciting season, one that should begin with some fireworks today with both Mamelodi Sundowns and Bidvest Wits involved.

Mosimane’s Brazilians were pretty heartsore after having their title taken away from them last season by a marauding Kaizer Chiefs under the guidance of Stuart Baxter who added a second title to his CV.

And the man they call “Jingles” made it clear even last season that he will be stopping at nothing to get the championship back to Chloorkop. Incredibly, though, he did not raid the market as usual to help him in his endeavour to win a second league title. A sign perhaps that he is content with the team he has?

Their impressive pre-season form seemed to suggest this was the case until Wednesday night when the Brazilians once again failed in the MTN8 following defeat to a Bloemfontein Celtic side that literally killed off their title hopes last season.

But anyone who reads too much into the penalty shoot-out loss in the cup competition would be making a big mistake, for Sundowns are a team built for the marathon that is the league race.

Mosimane opens the season with a tricky trip to a Platinum Stars side that have traditionally got the better of him and a slip up there might have “Jingles” a little ruffled. Still, he is way too experienced to allow it to affect him much.

Yet if the former Bafana Bafana coach has the know-how to lead a team to league glory, he is still a baby compared to both Igesund and Hunt.

Both these multiple championship winners are under immense pressure to deliver this season as their clubs - SuperSport United and Bidvest Wits - have spared no cost to ensure they have the playing personnel to deliver the big gong.

Hunt scored a psychological victory over his adversary with the MTN8 victory midweek and a win tonight over an Ajax Cape Town outfit he is facing in the cup semi-final to begin the season on a winning note will send confidence soaring at the former university outfit.

One thing you can count on is for both Hunt and Igesund to have a meticulous plan on how to tackle the season. Hunt is renowned for his ability to get the points where you will expect him to - against the smaller clubs - and then stealing a few from fellow contenders.

Igesund, on the other hand, probably has already drawn up a plan of how many points he needs to get to win the championship - which matches he can afford to lose and still not be hurt badly.

What then of new kids on the championship contenders’ block - Komphela at Chiefs and Eric Tinkler at Pirates? Perhaps what these two have going for them is that they are in charge of the country’s two biggest sides and will have a huge crowd support to help them on. They are yet to show themselves as championship-winning material and this season they get the chance.

We are in for a fascinating championship battle. Let the race begin.

Anssi is liking new ‘nasty’ Ajax style

Anssi Jaakkola has picked up on a positive change at Ajax, a change that certainly augurs well for the new season.

|||

Cape Town - Anssi Jaakkola has quickly picked up on a positive change in the youthful Ajax Cape Town squad, a change that certainly augurs well for the new season.

Ajax open their Premier Soccer League campaign with an away fixture against Wits in Johannesburg on Saturday night (kick-off 8.15pm) - and Finnish goalkeeper Jaakkola believes that, if things continue the way they did in Tuesday’s 1-0 MTN8 quarter-final win over Orlando Pirates, the Urban Warriors could do very well this season.

Jaakkola has been an inspirational figure for Ajax since signing in 2013. The 28-year-old shot-stopper played in his home country, Italy, the Czech Republic and Scotland before arriving in the Mother City.

In a very young Ajax squad, Jaakkola is the voice and presence of experience, while he is also often the only player in the team that doesn’t have his roots in the Cape club’s youth academy.

In that semi-final against Pirates in midweek, the Finn was outstanding. Ajax weren’t at their best, especially in the first half, and Jaakkola had to pull off some memorable saves to keep the Capetonians in the game.

“It was a big win against Pirates,” Jaakkola said. “I don’t think we played too well, we couldn’t get our passing game going and I thought we were lacking in energy at times. But I guess that makes the win all that better.

“But you know what impressed me was that, for the first time ever, we played a bit of a nasty game. I think sometimes we are too nice, we don’t want to roll up our sleeves and fight for the points.

“But, against Pirates, I finally saw that aspect of our game. The team put in the tackles, they worked hard, they toughed it out, and it was nice to see such a change.”

But with Wits waiting on Saturday night, Jaakkola is aware that Ajax are in for yet another difficult challenge.

“We know what Wits are all about,” he said. “They will come with high balls into the penalty area and play off the second ball. They are an aerial threat, so they’ll try to use that to their advantage. We just have to make sure that we are sharp and alert and that we are ready for the physical battle.”

And, considering Jaakkola’s thoughts on how he expects Wits to play, there’s no doubt the keeper’s role will be extremely vital on Saturday night.

Ajax coach Roger de Sa, too, admitted that facing the Students is always a difficult task - and it’s a challenge he will have to get used to, especially now that they also have to face the Clever Boys in a two-leg MTN8 semi-final over the next few weeks.

“It’s a really tough league opener,” De Sa said. “Wits have added some good players to their squad and I think they will do well this season. I certainly believe that they will be among the title-contenders.

“And, for us today, it’s even more difficult, in that Wits are always tough to play at home. But it’s a challenge we will have to overcome.”

The challenge for both De Sa and Ajax, of course, is in their performance on the road. Over the last few seasons, the Urban Warriors have been abysmal away from home, but the coach is starting to see a change.

“At the end of last season, we beat Bloemfontein Celtic away and there were also a few other away games in which we did well,” De Sa said.

“And then on Tuesday we went to Orlando to beat Pirates, something which we haven’t done in a number of years… so the away form is also starting to look good.

“We are finally getting a little better on the road. But it’s also about consistency, and that is now the challenge for the squad.”

Fixtures:

Saturday: Free State Stars v Black Aces; Polokwane City v Bloem Celtic; Platinum Stars v Mamelodi Sundowns; Wits v Ajax Cape Town (Joburg, 8.15pm)

Sunday: Golden Arrows v University of Pretoria; Chippa United v Kaizer Chiefs

Watch me get better, roars Kane

What are the odds of Harry Kane repeating last season’s stunning 31-goal breakthrough?

|||

London - What are the odds of Harry Kane repeating last season’s stunning 31-goal breakthrough? If you listen to the modest but confident 22-year-old, they might become shorter than you think.

The Tottenham striker, linked with a £40million switch to Manchester United, thinks he can back up a memorable year - and is ready to dismiss claims he will be a one-season wonder.‘I’m looking forward to the challenge of seeing what I come up against and how I deal with it,’ said Kane ahead of today’s opener at Old Trafford.

‘I am looking forward to it and am confident in my ability, as I have been my whole career, that I will be capable of maintaining my form - if not improving year in, year out.’ Wise beyond his years, the Chingford boy is ready for the inevitable questions should he go through a barren spell in the coming months.

‘That’s football,’ he said. ‘I try never to get too high and never to get too low. You have to just keep that medium. There will be times if I don’t score for a few games and times when hopefully I will be scoring three, four or five games in a row.’ Not that he is too concerned.‘I’ve scored goals wherever I’ve been,’ said the England forward.

‘It’s something that comes naturally to me. And it is not just about scoring, it is about what you bring to the team, working hard, bringing others into play, getting assists - that’s all part of the game as well.’

This time around there will be a heavy burden on Kane’s broad shoulders. Fellow striker Emmanuel Adebayor is set to leave while Spain flop Roberto Soldado’s future is unclear.

Mauricio Pochettino has vowed to bring in support, with West Brom’s Saido Berahino a target, but when Spurs kick off at Old Trafford he will be the lone man up top.Kane, who went to the European Championship with England Under 21s, is ready to carry that workload.‘I’m probably as fit as I ever have been,’ he said.

‘I didn’t have as much rest as some of the other lads but I kept myself fit while I was away and cleared my mind mentally for a few weeks.‘I went away to New York and the Bahamas with my girlfriend and played some golf,’ Kane explained. ‘I kept fit in the gym. The Bahamas was quite quiet on the beach.

I didn’t really look at my phone for a week or so. I just got away from it all and I think that was the perfect thing to do.’ Kane’s golf handicap is down to four, but he dismissed claims of being a shark on the course.

‘No, it’s four!’ he said. ‘I have seen a few bandits in the football game, don’t worry about that. It’s hard to play during the season but I managed to play a bit while I was away.’ It is back to business at Old Trafford - and for Kane the clash against his admirers cannot come quickly enough.

‘I can’t wait, to be honest,’ he said. ‘I’m just really excited to get going now. It feels like ages, the last couple of weeks. It’s going to be a good test for us.’ Talk of a big move and leading the line seems a long way from 12 months ago, when Kane was named as a substitute for his side’s opening-day clash with West Ham.

‘I managed to come on and get an assist which was a good feeling and then it was about being patient,’ he said. ‘Obviously it’s different now. I’m looking forward to hopefully leading the line and trying to get off to a good start.’ Few would bet against him doing just that.

I'll win back fans, insists Rodgers

Brendan Rodgers admits he is starting from scratch and must prove to Liverpool’s supporters that he can earn their trust.

|||

London - Brendan Rodgers has admitted he is starting from scratch once again and must prove to Liverpool’s supporters that he can earn their trust.

The Liverpool manager returns to Stoke tomorrow, 11 weeks on from the 6-1 mauling that plunged his three-year tenure into doubt.

Rodgers described that afternoon as ‘the worst’ of his managerial career and accepts he will be under persistent scrutiny this season.

Rodgers has been eager to draw a line under the way his team’s form collapsed last season and having spent almost £80million on new faces - headed by Christian Benteke, who will make his debut - he believes Liverpool have the ammunition to challenge for a place in the top four.

There is a recognition, though, that his words will lack substance until Liverpool start winning consistently and he also accepts there will be scepticism about his credentials, just as there was when he first arrived from Swansea in 2012.

‘I never take for granted the support I have had here but I also understand the disappointment of last year,’ said Rodgers. ‘I’m sure after a game like Stoke there was huge disappointment, but I have always been the one to take responsibility and rightly so.

‘The anger goes towards the manager and I accept that. It’s been an incredible journey since I came in here, an absolute privilege to manage this club with the supporters we have behind us, but of course you have to do well to earn that support and I need to earn that trust again.’

After a campaign in which Liverpool finished sixth and tumbled out of Europe at the first hurdle twice, Rodgers understands how big the onus is on him to deliver a place in the Champions League next May.

‘The owners have given me great trust since I have been in here and in the main I have had a great response from the players,’ he said.

‘I’m as driven now - if not more - as the first day I came in here. We want to put a disappointing season behind us. They have always felt that I was the guy to be here. They re-assured me of that. That, of course, gives me great confidence going forward to make us better again.’

Now De Gea is finished at United...

Louis Van Gaal made a stunning eve-of-season pronouncement, revealing David de Gea would not play against Spurs.

|||

London - Louis van Gaal was on Friday night considering one of the biggest gambles of his managerial career as he pondered whether to hand young goalkeeper Sam Johnstone a Barclays Premier League debut at home to Tottenham.Van Gaal on Friday made a stunning eve-of-season pronouncement, revealing David de Gea would play no part after struggling for focus amid a proposed transfer to Real Madrid.

The manager’s decision, which all but confirms De Gea’s Manchester United career is over, threw plans for Saturday’s game into confusion and placed pressure on executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward to sell the 24-year-old to Madrid before the end of the transfer window on September 1.

It appears Ajax’s Jasper Cillessen is top of United’s list to take over from De Gea as the club’s No 1. ‘We have problems with the goalkeepers so we need maybe two more players,’ Van Gaal told MUTV.

However, it is the identity of the Spaniard’s replacement that will most intrigue United fans on Saturday, as none of the reserve keepers would appear to be in the ideal position to step up.Van Gaal brought in Argentina international Sergio Romero and the former Sampdoria goalkeeper has been earmarked as United’s second choice.

However, the 28-year-old has not played a club game since January. With Anders Lindegaard available for transfer and recently injured and Victor Valdes so far out of favour he hasn’t even been allocated a squad number, it would appear Van Gaal faces a straight choice between Romero and young Johnstone.

The 22-year-old has never played a competitive game for United but played a full season on loan for Preston in League One last year and, crucially, appeared in all four of his club’s pre-season tour games in America. United told Preston last week he would not be able to return on loan until the situation at Old Trafford had been sorted out. Meanwhile, those close to Johnstone confirmed last night he is expecting to figure in Saturday’s matchday squad, at the very least.

Van Gaal said De Gea is unsettled by uncertainty about his future and it would appear there is no way back for last season’s player of the year.‘I don’t know the solution with De Gea,’ said the Dutchman. ‘I cannot lead this process, I can only watch and observe and that is what I’m doing. I’m not participating in it. ‘But he shall not play. I don’t have any concerns. He won’t start the game. I think a human being is more than only a player.

He cannot manage it. You have to wait and see who plays.‘We have seen in training and matches and he is not the De Gea of last year. He tries, he does his upmost best, but it is a difficult situation.‘Now we have to play our first match and this is the most important match so I want players who can only focus on the match.’Van Gaal also expressed frustration the transfer window remains open after the domestic seasons across Europe have started.

‘I think when it is September 1 there is a decision made as the transfer period is over and then you have to manage a new situation,’ he said. ‘I am the victim, the fellow players are the victim, the club is the victim - that is why the transfer period needs to change.’ United’s stance this summer - at least at boardroom level - has been De Gea would not be sold and would only leave if Madrid agreed a swap deal involving defender Sergio Ramos.

That, however, has left United with an unhappy player and it is clear now Van Gaal wants him to be sold. Indeed, his decision to drop De Gea could be an attempt to speed up that process.‘He is the best goalkeeper we have had,’ said Van Gaal. ‘He was nominated by the fans as the best player at the club.

Do you think the trainer coach wants him to leave? ‘What has Real Madrid offered? We are asking money and they have to pay money. In the last few years Manchester United has paid a lot (for players) and we haven’t received a lot of money.’
