London - Jose Mourinho has committed himself to Premier League champions Chelsea until at least 2019 after signing a new four-year contract as manager, the west London club said on Friday.

The 52-year-old, who had previously been in charge from 2004-2007, rejoined the Stamford Bridge outfit in 2013 and led Chelsea to the league title and League Cup success last season.

“I said when I returned here that I have a special feeling for this club and nothing changed,” Mourinho told the club's website (www.chelseafc.com).

“I think this is a normal thing for me to sign a new contract. It is important we have this continuity and I hope we can enjoy more success in the future - for the fans, the players and the club.

“It is the club closest to my heart and I am very happy to know I will be staying here for a long time.”

Mourinho's side won the league twice during his first spell in charge and lifted the FA Cup plus two League Cups before the Portuguese left the club and enjoyed more success at Inter Milan, who won the Champions League in 2010.

Mourinho joined Real Madrid immediately after his European triumph with Inter - his second Champions League success after winning the trophy with Porto in 2004 - and won the King's Cup in his first season with the Spanish giants.

Real won their first La Liga title in four years in 2012 but the next season was turbulent as dressing-room divisions with established players, such as keeper Iker Casillas and defender Sergio Ramos, left Mourinho feeling unloved in the capital.

A welcome return to Chelsea soon followed and the London club finished third in the league under Mourinho in the 2013-14 season - four points behind champions Manchester City.

Chelsea were rampant in their quest for the title last season, however, and won the league with three matches to spare as Mourinho ensured his 69 percent win rate was the best of any manager to have taken charge of 15 or more Premier League games.

“We are very happy that Jose has committed four more years to the club,” Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia said.

“Since his arrival two years ago he has carefully developed the playing squad and brought trophies to Stamford Bridge.

“We look forward to the next four years and the continued success of the team.”

Chelsea begin the defence of their Premier League title at home to Swansea City on Saturday.

Durban – Kaiser Chiefs goalkeeper Nhlanhla Brilliant Khuzwayo was caught speeding on the N2 on Friday evening.

KwaZulu-Natal Road Traffic Inspectorate spokeswoman Zinhle Mngomezulu said Khuzwayo was clocked speeding at 166km/h an hour near the town of Ballito north of Durban.

Mngomezulu said Khuzwayo, who was driving a white BMW, was stopped and taken to the Umhlali police station before being released on R2000 bail.

The Belgium international rediscovered his touch soon after Sherwood took over at Aston Villa from Paul Lambert, scoring 12 goals in 13 league games, and ignited the interest of Liverpool, who bought him for a reported 32.5 million pounds ($50.36 million) in the summer.

Sherwood did his best to keep Benteke at Villa after Liverpool made their interest known and the manager even said, “there's no point going to a club where they don't cross the ball”.

Benteke said those comments led to a showdown with the 46-year-old Sherwood.

“I don't believe that and I told him - I spoke with him and I explained to him the situation,” the 24-year-old Benteke was quoted as saying by the British media.

“I said football has changed and football now is modern and I can adapt.

“It is not just about crossing, I can score normal goals, too. I told him I am not afraid about it.”

Benteke, who ruptured his Achilles tendon before the start of last season and missed the World Cup, feels the Villa manager was given too much credit for his return to form in the latter half of last season.

It was more down to his regaining full fitness, according to Benteke.

“He (Sherwood) came in at a good time, at a time when I was getting fit and getting better, so it was a good time for both of us,” Benteke added.

“The right time for him and for me. OK, he helped me a lot but I had been injured for a long time and I was getting back to what I could do. It was just a question of time.” – Reuters

The 30-year-old England international has made 115 appearances and scored 13 goals for the club since he joined from Aston Villa in 2011, and his new contract has an option to extend for another year.

“We are delighted that Ashley has signed a new contract,” manager Louis van Gaal told the club's website (www.manuntd.com). “Ashley is a very multi-functional player.

“He took to the wing-back position with great confidence and flourished on the wing throughout last season.

“Ashley is always very professional and has a great presence in the dressing room.”

Young was part of the team that won the Premier League title in 2012-13, which was also manager Alex Ferguson's last season in charge.

The winger's impressive form saw him keep British record transfer Angel Di Maria out of United's starting line-up for most of last season.

That takes him through to June 2017, along with coaches Ruben Cousillas, Xabier Mancisidor and Jose Cabello.

“We are delighted to reach this agreement with Manuel Pellegrini who has already contributed so much to the development of Manchester City in his first two years with us and we look forward to further progress in the seasons ahead,” chief executive officer Ferran Soriano said.

Critics have suggested Pellegrini faced the sack if City did not regain the league title from Chelsea but the Chilean, who joined the club in 2013, believes they will have “a very good” season.

“I am proud to manage Manchester City FC and am therefore very pleased to have agreed this contract,” he said.

“I have a very good roup of players and a great team of people to work with on and off the field and at all levels of the Club.

“I am focussed on the coming season and confident that my team and I will respond to the constant support shown to us by everyone including of course our fantastic fans.”

Chiefs defence will be tough to crack

Kaizer Chiefs conceded a miserly 14 goals in their 30 Absa Premiership matches last season.

Strikers, so the saying in football goes, win you matches. But defences win you championships.

This much was proven by Kaizer Chiefs last season when they captured the championship on the back of a solid defensive display that saw Amakhosi concede a miserly 14 goals in their 30 Absa Premiership matches. Before them, Gavin Hunt had guided SuperSport United to three successive league titles with the hallmark of Matsatsantsa’s play being the strength of their rearguard.

As Chiefs attempt to retain their title under the guidance of new coach Steve Komphela, pictured, Hunt and many other elite league coaches would have been pleased to see Amakhosi leak in a massive three goals in their MTN8 semi-final win over Maritzburg United.

It was the first time since their defeat by Congolese side AS Vita back in 2013 that Chiefs have had the opposition put three past them; the last time Chiefs conceded three goals in the league was in August 2013.

But while they were pathetic in defence on Wednesday night, the rest of the league will do well to not get too carried away.

For one, Chiefs were incredibly efficient in staging a second half comeback that saw them overhaul Maritzburg’s 2-0 half-time lead and then go ahead only for Siyanda Xulu to score an own goal that resulted in the match going into extra-time.

But more importantly should be the fact that the central defensive pairing of Xulu and Ivan Bukenya is unlikely to be the way Komphela goes this season. Once Erick Mathoho, who was a splendid performer alongside the departed Tefu Mashamaite, recovers from his injury he will take his rightful place in the heart of the defence to give Chiefs the solidity that they are used to.

And there’s also the likelihood of Itumeleng Khune returning in goal to lend his star quality to the side’s rearguard and ensure the defending champions are veryhard to breach.

That done, Chiefs are sure to be hard to beat as Komphela seeks to join Pitso Mosimane as the only black coaches to win the Premiership titles.

For in attack, Amakhosi look like they will be much better than they were under Stuart Baxter – Komphela having made it clear that he will have them playing expansive and positive football.

Already on Wednesday night it was clear to see that the club is beginning to understand what their new coach needs – Chiefs taking the game to Maritzburg from the first whistle and attacking them with pace and in varied forms – directly and from the wings.

What Komphela will need to cut out from his team’s play though is what appeared to be over-elaboration and an attempt to walk the ball into the net.

And as Maritzburg proved in the first half, Chiefs will have to be very careful not to leave themselves open to counter-attacks. For while the Team of Choice allowed them back in the game, the likes of SuperSport, Bidvest Wits and Mamelodi Sundowns will not let a 2-0 lead slip away.

Still, it would appear Chiefs will be hard to dethrone as Absa Premiership champions. They begin the defence of their title where they were crowned last season, at Chippa United tomorrow.

Van Gaal said the Spaniard would sit out Saturday's game as he cannot “manage” the ongoing transfer speculation.

“It is not easy for David De Gea to manage his situation now,” Van Gaal told reporters.

“David shall not play so I don't have any concerns (about him not being ready),” said Van Gaal.

“I think about the human being more than the player and I don't think he can manage that.”

The Spaniard was in inspirational form last season, helping United to finish fourth in the Premier League and grab a place in the Champions League playoffs.

Yet since the end of the campaign he has been consistently linked with a return home and speculation has intensified as the transfer window has worn on.

United signed a potential replacement for De Gea in Argentina goalkeeper Sergio Romero, who could now be handed a Premier League debut at Old Trafford this weekend.

Van Gaal said his side have no injury worries as they approach their season opener, but new midfield signing Bastian Schweinsteiger and defender Marcos Rojo are struggling for fitness.

“Schweinsteiger also came at the last moment so I don't think he's fit enough. We have to build his fitness,” Van Gaal said.

London - Chelsea must add a new dimension to their brand of football if the champions are to mount a strong defence of the Premier League title they won in some comfort last season, said manager Jose Mourinho.

The Stamford Bridge club finished eight points clear of second-placed Manchester City in May but Mourinho said his players had to continue to evolve and could not afford to simply stand still.

“We are trying to add new qualities to our game to improve what we did in the past,” the Portuguese told reporters.

“We are trying to be a little more unpredictable because opponents know us well and we want to go to the season with high motivation.

“The title cannot give us bad things, it can only give us good things. The good things are confidence and motivation for more,” said Mourinho.

Chelsea played a free-flowing style in the first half of last season but when injuries, suspensions and loss of form kicked in after Christmas they started to adopt a more cautious, pragmatic approach in order to grind out results.

Mourinho's men have been big spenders in the past but they have been almost frugal with their close-season expenditure compared to Manchester City, Manchester United and Liverpool and Mourinho said it would be a “great challenge” to try and retain the title.

While City, United and Liverpool have splashed out vast sums of money to strengthen their resources, the Londoners have merely tinkered with their squad.

Club favourites Petr Cech and Didier Drogba have moved on to pastures new and been replaced by former Stoke City goalkeeper Asmir Begovic and Monaco striker Radamel Falcao who had an indifferent spell on loan at United last season.

“I have only one objective and that is to win the next game,” said Mourinho. “I have no other objective apart from trying to improve and improve and improve.

“It's a great challenge to improve our team basically without new players, apart from Begovic and Falcao. I'm more than happy with that and the players are receiving this challenge with open arms.

“Every day we work really hard to try to improve and I see great motivation in the players. They are happy because we are the same group...because myself and the club have shown loyalty to them,” added Mourinho.

“We've said, 'You are the champions, you made us champions, we trust you. Even if the other clubs have made huge investment we stick with you, we believe in you'.”

Chelsea, who have won the Premier League four times in 11 seasons, meet Cech's new team Arsenal in Sunday's Community Shield, the traditional curtain-raiser to the new campaign.

Villa escaped relegation by the skin of their teeth last season, finishing 17th on 38 points - their worst performance since 1994-95 - and Sherwood believes avoiding the drop rather than trying to push for major honours will continue to be the club's top priority in the new season.

“We need to stay in the league obviously,” said the manager, who lost two key players in Christian Benteke and Fabian Delph during the summer transfers.

“We know it's a tough ride ahead.”

The clubs that avoid relegation this season will benefit from the record television rights deal that comes into effect from next season.

The 5.14 billion pounds ($7.97 billion) agreement with Sky and BT Sports will boost even the lowest-ranked club's income by millions of pounds.

Sherwood has brought in nine players during the summer to plug the gaps in his squad, including former England and Manchester City defender Micah Richards and Ghana striker Jordan Ayew from French club Lorient.

“An improvement on last year is what we're looking for,” Sherwood was quoted as saying by the Bournemouth Echo.

He missed five months of last season, from the end of November to the start of May, and now the England midfielder must endure another period of uncertainty while he waits to find out the extent of this injury.

It is the same left ankle that he had surgery on following Paddy McNair's tackle on him in November when he damaged ligaments. The best case scenario is that Wilshere will not require surgery this time and could be back training again within four weeks.

There is a risk that it could be much longer. He has been sent on holiday by the club for a few days and they hope to have a clearer view of his situation when he returns.

Either way, it is a huge blow for the 23-year-old who hit his stride with England at the end of last season, scoring twice in the 3-2 win in the Euro 2016 qualifier against Slovenia in June. He had looked sharp in pre-season.

Wilshere will miss England's qualifiers in September against San Marino and Switzerland.

Arsène Wenger said on the club's website: “I had a bad surprise because it is a hairline crack in his fibula that makes him a few weeks out. There is minimal damage apart from the bone damage - there is no damage at all apart from that. It was a collision in training and it was all completely accidental.”

London - England's Premier League is undoubtedly one of the most exciting in world football but as it embarks on its 24th season on August 8 is it also becoming one of the most predictable?

Last term only Newcastle United and Everton, both of whom dropped down the table, moved more than four places either way, while two of the three promoted clubs went straight back down.

Clubs outside the top six will aim to avoid relegation which will be more important than ever with a lucrative three-year domestic television deal, worth over five billion pounds ($7.77 billion), strting in 12 months' time.

Overseas TV rights will add half as much again, making the struggle to stay up intense.

While the usual suspects are expected to contest the title, however, none of them have managed to win it for two years in a row since Manchester United completed a hat-trick in 2009 under Alex Ferguson.

Since the Scot retired in 2013, the Old Trafford club have not been in serious contention to add to their record 20 championships, finishing seventh and fourth.

They have spent vast amounts of money in that time, with only mixed success, and during the close season Louis Van Gaal has continued to revamp his squad.

Germany captain Bastian Schweinsteiger from Bayern Munich and Southampton's Frenchman Morgan Schneiderlin will improve the midfield options and allow the Dutchman to use Wayne Rooney in his best position, further forward.

By the end of the season Rooney should have overtaken Bobby Charlton's records as record scorer for England and United.

He will be more interested in whether United have regained the title from Chelsea, who led the table from the third match of last season and finished eight points clear of the previous season's champions Manchester City.

On the day in May that Jose Mourinho's side made sure they could not be caught, television pundit and former United defender Gary Neville told viewers, “the rest are absolutely miles behind this Chelsea team”.

United, City, Arsenal and Liverpool will all believe they have reduced the gap after a transfer window in which the champions have so far been comparatively quiet.

Other than bringing in Asmir Begovic from Stoke to replace Petr Cech as second-choice goalkeeper, Mourinho's only notable signing has been Colombia striker Radamel Falcao, who failed to live up to his reputation at United last season.

He impressed Chelsea's captain John Terry when scoring a hat-trick against the Londond club for Atletico Madrid in the 2012 Uefa Super Cup final and, like United, they have now taken him on loan from Monaco, while hoping for a better return.

City scored 10 goals more than Chelsea last season and hope to outscore them again after paying a fee that could rise to 49 million pounds ($76.16 million) for England's Raheem Sterling.

Their total of 83 goals was 31 more than Liverpool, which explains why Brendan Rodgers made forwards his priority and signed Christian Benteke from Aston Villa, Hoffenheim's Brazil striker Roberto Firmino and Danny Ings from relegated Burnley.

Arsenal's Arsene Wenger has felt less need to strengthen a squad that retained the FA Cup and returned to the top three, although experienced former Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech will doubtless save them plenty of points.

Paris - Paris St Germain boosted their Champions League prospects by adding significant weight to their attacking options with the signing of Argentina winger Angel Di Maria from Manchester United on Thursday.

The French champions, who had their Financial Fair Play restrictions lifted by UEFA last month, have paid 63 million euros for Di Maria according to local media reports.

The fee is just short of the 64 million euros ($69.89 million) Ligue 1 record set by PSG when they bought Uruguay striker Edinson Cavani and the more than 60 million that Monaco paid for Colombia striker Radamel Falcao in 2013.

“I know that PSG has a very important, very good project to win the Champions League... this is what I share with it. I want to bring the maximum to go beyond the quarter-finals,” Di Maria told a news conference at his unveiling in Paris.

PSG have failed to get past the last eight in the Champions League for the last three seasons but with former Real Madrid winger Di Maria, Laurent Blanc's side will hope to go further.

“We have the right team to do better, to win the Champions League,” said PSG president Nasser al Khelaifi. “We know it's very tough but we want to try and win it, especially now that we have one more player that has won the Champions league.”

The 27-year-old Di Maria, who was looking to end a disappointing stint at United, could partner fellow Argentine Javier Pastore, the duo having been impressive in helping their country reach the final at this year's Copa America.

Di Maria is expected to play on the left wing, which would send Cavani to the right flank with Swede Zlatan Ibrahimovic playing as a lone striker.

Neither Ibrahimovic nor Cavani have won the Champions League but Di Maria was man of the match in the 2014 final when Real Madrid lifted the trophy with a 4-1 win over Atletico Madrid.

He was also instrumental in Argentina's campaign at the 2014 World Cup, where the Albiceleste reached the final.

After an impressive start at Old Trafford last season, with three goals in his first four games, he suffered a two-month injury layoff and failed to score again in the league.

Towards the end of the season he was regularly left out by manager Louis Van Gaal, who became resigned to the club taking a heavy loss on the Argentine after shelling out a British record fee of almost 60 million pounds 12 months ago.

Di Maria did not join United's pre-season tour of the United States and on Monday travelled to Doha, Qatar, where PSG's owners are based, before finalising the deal.
