Blatter hires top legal eagle

Sepp Blatter and his second-in-command have hired top lawyers to represent them during the Fifa probe.

|||

Berne/New York - Fifa’s embattled president, Sepp Blatter, and his second-in-command have hired high-powered lawyers to represent them, two sources said as a corruption probe engulfs soccer's global governing body with Swiss authorities identifying suspicious bank transactions.

Blatter recently retained Richard Cullen, the chairman of the law firm McGuireWoods and a former US federal prosecutor, said a person familiar with the matter who spoke to Reuters on the condition of anonymity.

Jerome Valcke, Fifa secretary general, has hired prominent New York defence attorney Barry Berke to represent him, a separate person familiar with the matter said on Wednesday.

Swiss prosecutors looking into the international soccer scandal identified 53 suspicious bank transactions, the attorney general said on Wednesday, stressing that the investigation may take time.

Swiss Attorney General Michael Lauber told journalists he would not rule out interviewing Blatter and Valcke, although Switzerland had so far targeted no individuals.

Switzerland, where Fifa is based, announced its criminal investigation and seized computers at Fifa headquarters last month on the same day that the United States revealed indictments of nine soccer officials and five businessmen as part of a separate probe into corruption.

“We are faced with a complex investigation with many international implications,” Lauber said in his first public comments since his office obtained the computer data last month.

“The world of football needs to be patient. By its nature, this investigation will take more than the legendary 90 minutes,” he said, referring to the length of a soccer match.

US prosecutors have not accused Blatter of wrongdoing. Among the issues the Federal Bureau of Investigation is examining is Blatter's stewardship of Fifa, sources have said.

US prosecutors believe that Valcke was involved in $10-million in Fifa bank transactions that are a key part of the investigation, a source said in early June. He also has not been accused of wrongdoing.

Fifa’s ethics committee confirmed it was conducting its own investigation into individuals suspected of breaking the rules in relation to bidding for the right to host the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, which were granted to Russia and Qatar respectively.

It said it was prepared to investigate more suspects and take on extra staff if needed.

On Wednesday, Ricardo Teixeira, the former head of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF), said he got “absolutely nothing” in return for his vote to award Qatar the rights to host the 2022 World Cup and described suggestions he was involved in impropriety as “preposterous”.

Switzerland's third-largest listed bank, Julius Baer, said on Wednesday it had launched an internal investigation in connection with Fifa. It said it was co-operating with the authorities and did not say when its own probe had begun.

The attorney general was clear that Blatter and Valcke could be among those summoned for questioning: “There will be formal interviews of all relevant people. By definition, this does not exclude interviewing the president of Fifa and this does not exclude interviewing the secretary general of Fifa.”

Lauber said his team had obtained evidence on 104 bank-client relationships, each of which represented several accounts. Switzerland's Financial Intelligence Unit anti-money laundering agency had identified 53 suspicious transactions flagged up from information supplied by banks.

Blatter was re-elected to a controversial fifth term just two days after the probes became public. He announced the following week that he would step down and a new presidential election would be held between December and February.

In a related development, suspended Asian Football Confederation (AFC) general secretary Alex Soosay quit on Wednesday rather than fight to clear his name amid allegations he tried to interfere with an anti-corruption probe of the regional governing body.

Soosay was suspended last month by the AFC after Malaysian media reported an official at the 46-member confederation had been asked by Soosay to “tamper or hide” documents during a 2012 external audit.

The PricewaterhouseCoopers inspection came following the lifetime ban of former AFC President Mohamed Bin Hammam, by FIFA for ethics breaches, who Soosay worked closely with.

Bin Hammam was once set to challenge Blatter for the Fifa presidency but was banned for his part in a cash-for-votes scandal.

Swiss authorities have said their criminal investigation specifically targets the decisions to stage the 2018 and 2022 World Cups. Both Russia and Qatar deny wrongdoing and say they are preparing to hold the tournaments as scheduled.

Asked whether the Swiss investigation could derail Russia's plans, Lauber said that decision was not his problem.

Lauber said his work was completely independent of the ongoing US cases. While Switzerland had received and fulfilled a request for legal assistance from the United States, it had not asked for any such help in return, he added.

His investigation was looking closely at material generated by Michael Garcia, an American lawyer hired by Fifa to investigate ethics violations who spent years examining the Russia and Qatar bids.

Garcia's report has never been published and Fifa has released only a summary which exonerated the Russian and Qatari bids of serious wrongdoing.

Garcia quit saying the summary mischaracterised his report. However, it resulted in proceedings being opened against unnamed individuals which his successor Cornel Borbely said he has continued.

“The (ethics committee) is carrying out several proceedings into football officials on suspicion of breach of the Fifa Code of Ethics based on the findings of the investigation into the decision for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups,” Borbely said in a statement.

“Should new evidence come to light, the investigatory chamber will widen the group of suspects. (It) is prepared to increase its staff numbers at any time if needed.”

Lauber said the US authorities had not asked for Garcia's report.

Lauber said his office had seized nine terabytes of data, the size of the printed collection of the US Library of Congress.

He said he had no complaints about Fifa's co-operation to date. Fifa said in a statement that the Swiss investigation was based on a complaint that it had made itself last November.

“Fifa is co-operating fully as an injured party in the actions by Swiss authorities,” it said.

“Fifa itself instigated these proceedings in November 2014 when it presented the file on the 2018/2022 Fifa World Cup bidding process to the Swiss Office of the Attorney General.”

Leicester sack racist sex tape trio

Leicester City have sacked three players who allegedly took part in a racist sex tape during an end-of-season tour of Thailand.

|||

London - Leicester City have sacked three players, including manager Nigel Pearson's son James, after the trio appeared to take part in a racist sex tape during an end-of-season tour of Thailand.

“Leicester City Football Club has notified Tom Hopper, Adam Smith and James Pearson that their contracts with the club have been terminated,” Leicester said in a statement on the club website on Wednesday.

“The decision follows the conclusion of an internal investigation and disciplinary proceedings, as a consequence of events that took place during the club's end-of-season goodwill tour of Thailand.”

Midlands side Leicester, who produced a remarkable late-season surge to secure their Premier League safety, are owned by Thai billionaire father and son Vichai and Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha.

The involvement of his son is a big embarrassment for manager Pearson, who has been hailed by fans for managing the 'great escape' from relegation.

James Pearson made one appearance in a League Cup tie, while neither of Hopper or Smith had played for the first team.

“Leicester City Football Club is acutely aware of its position, and that of its players, as a representative of the city of Leicester, the Premier League, the Football Association and the Club's supporters,” the statement added.

“It is committed to promoting a positive message of community and family values and equality, and to upholding the standards expected of a Club with its history, tradition and aspirations.”

Neymar named in Barca fraud lawsuit

A Brazilian company filed a complaint that alleges it was the victim of fraud committed in Barca's signing of Neymar.

|||

Madrid - A Spanish judge has accepted a legal complaint filed by Brazilian investment fund DIS that alleges it was the victim of a fraud perpetrated in Barcelona's signing of forward Neymar from Santos.

DIS, which owned 40 percent of Neymar's rights when he was at Santos, alleges it was paid less than half the cash it was entitled to when the player agreed to join the Spanish and European champions in 2013.

Barcelona, former president Sandro Rosell, incumbent Josep Maria Bartomeu, who is standing for re-election, Neymar, his father, Santos and two of the Brazilian club's executives were all named in the lawsuit, according to a court statement published on Wednesday.

The complaint is the latest twist to a saga that has resulted in Barcelona, Rosell and Bartomeu facing trial for tax fraud over the Neymar deal.

However, this is the first time that Neymar himself has been named as a defendant in a lawsuit linked to the transfer.

Bartomeu was a vice president under Rosell when Neymar was signed in 2013 in a complex deal involving multiple contracts with the player and his father.

Bartomeu, Rosell, who resigned over the allegations, and the club have been accused of defrauding the tax office of some 13 million euros ($14.7 million).

Prosecutors have asked for a prison sentence of two years and three months for Bartomeu and 7-1/2 years for Rosell, plus fines and payments of outstanding taxes totalling more than 60 million euros.

The tax probe was launched after a club member questioned the figures given for the Neymar deal. Barca initially said they paid 57.1 million euros but later admitted the cost was nearer 100 million.

The court said on Wednesday that as part of the probe into the DIS complaint, English clubs Chelsea and Manchester City, Barca's Spanish rivals Real Madrid and German side Bayern Munich had been asked for details of offers they made for Neymar when he was at Santos between 2009 and 2013.

Bafana dismantled Angola - Shakes

Coach Shakes Mashaba said Bafana Bafana's "nippy" display laid the foundation for their 2-1 won over Angola.

|||

Cape Town – Coach Shakes Mashaba said Bafana Bafana’s “nippy” display laid the foundation for their 2-1 won over Angola in Tuesday’s international friendly at the Cape Town Stadium.

He added that the approach of the visiting Angolans helped to bring the best out of Bafana Bafana.

“What I liked about this (Angola) team is that they never came to park a bus here. They were attacking from the word ‘go’ and their level of match intelligence was very high,” said Mashaba. “They defend in numbers. They attack in numbers.

“The good things is the kind of nippy football we played dismantled them. Our boys were very good in combinations, though the problem of finishing up was still there today.

“It was a good thing that we managed to score two goals and we managed to win the game. I think going forward to our next game, this was a good preparation match. It gave us, more or less, an idea of what to expect, not in terms of skills, but in terms of attacking football.”

After Bafana Bafana’s three-match goalless streak, Mashaba said the fact that the team managed two goals will help to instill a measure of self-belief in the ranks.

“The boys did not lose hope, they gave their all today. Having not won for the past many games did not make the players drop their heads, but they kept on grinding and that is why today they were able to come out with a win.

“The victory was what we were looking for and it came at the right time. What pleased me more with our play was when we were going forward. When players get to that (penalty) area they start thinking what happens if I miss, and unfortunately in that area you need to make a split decision, you have to act now or you have lost it.”

Mashaba lamented the fact that the Bournemouth-based striker Tokelo Rantie was not available for the match.

“Playing without a player like Rantie in our team causes problems upfront. Rantie creates, he assists and creates chances for himself and when he plays, there is no defender that is comfortable,” said Mashaba.

“So imagine if you have three Rantie’s in your team: you can prepare to play three strikers and three midfielders, because it says to the opposition: you will need more numbers in your defence. Where do you (opposition) get them? They will draw from their midfield or somewhere else, which gives us the space to go forward.”

The matter of grooming strikers at national level is not a job for a national team coach, nor can he be expected to solve the problem.

“A coach that comes to you at national level and says I’ve got a solution for scoring goals will not be telling you the truth,” he said. “It’s not only the national teams that are complaining about the lack of goals; it’s in the PSL and the NFD – that’s where the problem should be addressed. But even there it is a little bit late, you have to go further down to work with those things.

“In the national team, [the problem] will always be there, until you get a striker born with striking qualities. Then he will score goals for you, and you won’t have problems.” - ANA

City in fresh bid for Sterling

Manchester City have made a fresh and much improved offer of £40 million to Liverpool for want-away Raheem Sterling.

|||

Manchester City have made a fresh and much improved offer of £40 million to Liverpool for want-away England international Raheem Sterling, according to reports in the English press.

Liverpool are thought to value the livewire 20-year-old winger at £50 million (69 million euros) and they are likely to turn down the offer even though Sterling has told Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers he wants to leave Anfield.

City offered £25 million plus add ons last week and this second approach for Sterling is unlikely to be their last.

The club's chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak has promised “high-quality” signings after Manuel Pellegrini's charges failed to meet expectations during their failed defence of the Premier League title.

For their part the once-mighty Merseyside outfit remain keen to convince Sterling to sign a new contract, although he rejected a deal that would have paid him around £100,000-a-week earlier this year.

Sterling's refusal to commit to Liverpool has angered the club's supporters, who jeered him at an end of season awards dinner.

Agent Aidy Ward's subsequent claim his client would not even sign for “£900,000-a-week” prompted Liverpool to cancel a scheduled meeting to reopen talks in May.

Sterling says his issue is not about money, stating in an April interview not sanctioned by the club, that he did not want to be viewed as a “money-grabbing 20-year-old”.

Liverpool's sixth-place finish means they cannot offer him Champions League football next season and a disjointed campaign on the pitch personally has not helped.

Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United are also reported to be interested in Sterling. – AFP

Vidal arrested for drunk driving

Chilean soccer star Arturo Vidal was arrested for drunk driving after crashing his Ferrari on the outskirts of Santiago, police said.

|||

Chilean soccer star Arturo Vidal was arrested for drunk driving Tuesday after crashing his Ferrari on the outskirts of Santiago, police said.

The Juventus midfielder, currently starring in his country's bid to win the Copa America on home soil, suffered “minor injuries”.

His wife, who also was in the red sports car, had “moderately serious injuries,” police colonel Ricardo Gonzalez told reporters.

“Because he was driving under the influence of alcohol ... (Vidal) is being held,” Gonzalez said. He refused to discuss the level of alcohol in Vidal's system.

Immediate details about the crash were scarce, but officials said Vidal's car had collided with another vehicle.

The player posted a short video message on YouTube, in which he tried to reassure his fans.

“Today, I had a car accident. It was not my fault. I'm fine, my family's fine. Thank you for everything,” Vidal said, giving a thumbs-up.

Several Twitter users posted photographs of what they said were Vidal's car, which was badly mangled on the driver's side. The car's airbags appeared to have deployed.

It was not immediately clear how Vidal's arrest would affect his participation in the tournament.

Vidal, 28, who plays for Italian giants Juventus, is one of the biggest stars of Chilean football and a key figure in the country's attempts to win the Copa America.

The midfielder is currently the tournament's top goalscorer, having scored a penalty in the opening victory against Ecuador last Thursday before scoring twice in Monday's 3-3 draw with Mexico in Santiago.

Chile, currently top of Group A, meet Bolivia in their final first round match on Friday.

The combative midfielder is no stranger to controversy. In 2011 he was among a group of several players who were sanctioned and kicked out of a Chilean squad camp after turning up late to training. He was subsequently welcomed back to the fold after apologizing.

Earlier this season Juventus handed the midfielder a club record 100 000 euro ($112,000) fine after he was allegedly involved in a drunken brawl outside a Turin nightclub. – AFP

Chelsea closing in on Falcao

Chelsea are finalising the signing of Radamel Falcao on a one-season, £7million loan deal from Monaco.

|||

Chelsea are finalising the signing of Radamel Falcao on a one-season, £7million loan deal from Monaco.

The finer details were being discussed last night, with Monaco keen on taking Mario Pasalic or Charly Musonda on loan in return.

Falcao, 29, is with Colombia at the Copa America in Chile, preparing to face Brazil tomorrow.

Manchester United rejected the chance to sign the striker for £43.2m after a loan spell last season produced four goals in 29 games.

However, Jose Mourinho believes he can rekindle Falcao, saying: ‘It hurts me that people in England think the real Falcao is the one we saw at Manchester United. If I can help Falcao reach his level again, I will do it.’

Falcao’s arrival will prompt Loic Remy to consider his future at Stamford Bridge.

The 28-year-old is a target for West Ham and Crystal Palace but Chelsea would want close to £20m for the France international.

Meanwhile, Mourinho is playing hardball with Arsenal over their attempts to secure an £11m move for Petr Cech.

The Gunners want a deal for the Chelsea goalkeeper tied up this week, but are facing strong opposition from Mourinho.

Cech wants to join and it is understood Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich will not stand in the 33-year-old’s way.

However, Mourinho does not want to strengthen a rival by allowing Cech to move across London. The Chelsea boss has asked the Gunners for either Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain or Theo Walcott in return for Cech — but Arsene Wenger has rejected that proposal.

Mourinho would much prefer Cech to join Paris Saint-Germain, who are also interested. Nevertheless, Arsenal — knowing Abramovich has given Cech his blessing — are still confident of landing their man.

Mourinho’s reluctance to sanction Cech’s switch to the Emirates Stadium also stems from the lack of a ready-made replacement for the keeper.

Cech would leave Chelsea without a proven second-choice goalkeeper, something Mourinho is acutely aware of.

Stoke’s Asmir Begovic interests Chelsea, but the Bosnian does not want to be a No 2. QPR’s Rob Green is also a possible replacement. – Daily Mail

Wilshere inspired by Gascoigne

Paul Gascoigne’s fearless style inspired Jack Wilshere as England flew through the clouds to Slovenia.

|||

Paul Gascoigne’s fearless style inspired Jack Wilshere as England flew through the clouds to Slovenia.

Wilshere watched the new documentary film about Gazza during the flight to Ljubljana, marvelling at his footwork, invention and the iconic goal against Scotland at Euro 96.

By the time he had fastened his seatbelt for the return journey Wilshere was already floating on air, savouring the thrill of his first England goals — two long-range strikes Gascoigne would have been proud to call his own.

‘I watched the film on the plane and it did inspire me,’ said Wilshere. ‘You could tell by the way he was going out and playing for England that he didn’t feel any fear.

‘Sometimes I think players feel a little bit of fear and a bit of pressure when they play for their country. But he just wanted to go out there. He said he felt at his best when he was playing, with the ball at his feet. You do sometimes feel like that. He did it and he was England’s best player. So, it’s worth a try.’

Wilshere has found his goal touch late in the season. He scored only four for club and country, but three of those came in his last four games.Two for England in a 3-2 win in Slovenia and a breathtaking volley for Arsenal against West Bromwich Albion.

He rated his second on Sunday as the best. ‘It was for England and it put us in the lead,’ said Wilshere. ‘It was a great team goal. Jordan Henderson passed it to Adam Lallana and not many players have that ability to see I was coming. He was running the other way and flicked it back. It sat up perfectly and I hit it sweetly.

‘Then, I’d probably say the first one for England. I was backing up, it fell nicely and I thought: “Why not?”. Thankfully it went in.

‘You work for these kind of moments, especially with England. When you’re younger, you dream of playing for England. So the goals felt great because playing for your country is great and when you score it’s a special feeling.’

Wilshere admits a goal was overdue, as he won his 28th cap. ‘It wasn’t preying on my mind,’ he said. ‘But you look at your stats and it says 28 games and no goals.

‘I hope there will be more. I’ve been open about saying I haven’t scored enough. I get into good positions but haven’t scored. It’s strange because I’m playing a deeper role.’

In the absence of a natural holding midfielder, Wilshere has been identified to operate deeper, even though his instinct is always to go forward, skipping past tackles and bouncing one-twos.

Roy Hodgson tries to resist labels like ‘holding midfielder’ and does not want to neutralise a creative force but this role is all about anticipation and decision making.

Wilshere has studied video clips of midfielders who control the game from that area, like Andrea Pirlo and Xabi Alonso, as well as dribblers like Lionel Messi and Andres Iniesta, who are more akin to his natural game.

Despite his party-boy image, the 23-year-old Arsenal midfielder has a strong appetite to improve. He has impressed the England coaching staff with his willingness to commit to a role outside his comfort zone. He has started the last eight games when fit.

‘It’s the balance that’s important,’ said Wilshere. ‘Sometimes you have to shield and sometimes you have to press.

‘When we’re attacking, you’re backing up play but you’re trying to stop the counter-attack. You’re trying to read the position the ball will drop out in. That’s a big part of the role.’

Truer test lies ahead for the new generation and proposed friendlies against France, Spain, Holland and Germany will offer a better yardstick than this gentle qualifying group.

‘We don’t feel we’re the finished article yet,’ said Wilshere. ‘We’re beating teams that we should beat. But we’re playing well. Sometimes, we’re going behind and coming back, showing great character. We’re unbeaten in a season for the first time in 24 years.’ – Daily Mail

No time to work on basics - Mashaba

Bafana Bafana coach Shakes Mashaba says the matter of the national side’s goal drought is beyond his control.

|||

Bafana Bafana coach Shakes Mashaba says the matter of the national side’s goal drought is beyond his control.

The national team has now played three matches without scoring and there are fears that the lack of fire power up front could be the case again when Bafana Bafana host Angola in an international friendly at the Cape Town Stadium, Green Point, today (kick-off 3pm).

The match will be co-hosted by Safa and the City of Cape Town to highlight Youth Day celebrations and place the Mother City in the pan-African spotlight.

Speaking to the media after yesterday morning’s training session at the match venue, Mashaba said that when the national team is in camp there is no capacity to work on “the basics of the game” because most of the time was spent on “technical matters”. He said the first day or two of a camp was usually a time for the squad to arrive, and on the remaining two days players will work on the game plan for the match.

“There is no time, at national level, to work on the basics of the game, no chance,” said Mashaba. “It’s something that’s done at club level and as for strikers not scoring goals, it’s not something I want to say too much about because I won’t tramp on the toes of the clubs, they are our suppliers after all.

“The matter of scoring does not only rest with the strikers. When we look at football across the globe, goals are also scored by midfielders and even defenders. We need to be one step ahead and in keeping with modern times.”

In past encounters, South Africa have never lost to Angola, who are known as Palancas Negras (Sable Antelopes) to their fans. In seven meetings, SA have won four and drew three. Several of those goals against Palancas Negras were scored by Cape Town-born strikers Mark Williams and Benni McCarthy, so playing in the Mother City may be a good omen for Bafana Bafana.

Unlike Bafana, who were held to a goalless draw against Gambia on Saturday, Angola will arrive in Cape Town on the back of a 4-0 home win over the Central Africa Republic on Saturday, in an Afcon Group B first-round qualifying match.

The four-goal victory has not escaped Mashaba’s attention: “We know what kind of competition to expect from them. They’re very tough, quick going forward and they push up all the time.”

Mashaba said he was encouraged by the performance at training where the strikers seemed to be at the top of their game. He hoped that they would carry this form into the match so that it could put smiles on the faces of Bafana fans in the Mother City.

“The game is important to try and bring smiles to our people’s faces. We can only hope that they will come and support the team, because the boys really need the support,” said Mashaba.”

“It’s most unfortunate sometimes when people get really discouraged when results do not come the way they want them to.”

According to Mashaba, there won’t be a lack of confidence in the ranks. “We have dealt with the game that we played against Gambia; that is now history. We’ve spoken to the players and, as you have seen them in training, they were alright. They showed some willingness. “In terms of the mood; it’s okay. Everyone is vibrant.”

Good news from the Bafana Bafana camp is that Orlando Pirates midfielder Oupa Manyisa could be fit to play. – ANA

Milan - AC Milan dismissed manager Filippo Inzaghi after a disappointing season in which the side finished 10th in Serie A and failed to qualify for Europe.

Inzaghi, who spent 10 years at the club as a player, struggled throughout much of a campaign that brought their lowest number of wins since 2001 and his future had long been questioned.

“AC Milan communicate that Filippo Inzaghi has been discharged of his responsibilities as first team coach. The club thank him for his work,” the club said in a statement on their website.

Chelsea homeless for 3 years?

Chelsea face finding a temporary home for up to three years as they roll out plans to build a new stadium with a capacity over 60 000.

|||

Chelsea face finding a temporary home for up to three years as they roll out plans to build a new stadium at Stamford Bridge with a capacity over 60 000.

The London club informed its local residents, club members and season-ticket holders yesterday that the process was ready to move into a consultation phase.

Final plans will not be drawn until consultation is over, and the club insist they remain some distance from lodging any formal applications with Hammersmith and Fulham council.

But feasibility studies are leading Chelsea towards the idea that they will be forced to abandon the ground they have called home for the last 110 years, clear the site and start from scratch, digging below street level to create space for an arena with an improved capacity.

This would send them in search of somewhere to play while work is ongoing.

Nearby Twickenham would be an ideal venue, and there have been preliminary talks with the RFU, although this solution remains highly unlikely because of the opposition

from the rugby world to hosting football at HQ.

Wembley is viewed as a serious alternative, although this would also be far from straightforward not least because of a strict annual limit on the number of live events which can be held there.

Roman Abramovich has always been aware that an expansion project at Stamford Bridge would be fraught with complications.

It is a technical challenge because it is only 12 acres — when 20 acres is normally considered the minimum for a stadium of the proposed size — and it is hemmed in by railway lines and the Fulham Road, which is awash with listed buildings.

Chelsea will look at building stands up and over the railway lines and different ways of getting up to 20,000 extra fans in and out quickly and safely.

It is an extraordinarily ambitious undertaking and likely to leave Abramovich with a bill of up to £500million. – Daily Mail
