Vidal arrested for drunk driving

Chilean soccer star Arturo Vidal was arrested for drunk driving after crashing his Ferrari on the outskirts of Santiago, police said.

|||

Chilean soccer star Arturo Vidal was arrested for drunk driving Tuesday after crashing his Ferrari on the outskirts of Santiago, police said.

The Juventus midfielder, currently starring in his country's bid to win the Copa America on home soil, suffered “minor injuries”.

His wife, who also was in the red sports car, had “moderately serious injuries,” police colonel Ricardo Gonzalez told reporters.

“Because he was driving under the influence of alcohol ... (Vidal) is being held,” Gonzalez said. He refused to discuss the level of alcohol in Vidal's system.

Immediate details about the crash were scarce, but officials said Vidal's car had collided with another vehicle.

The player posted a short video message on YouTube, in which he tried to reassure his fans.

“Today, I had a car accident. It was not my fault. I'm fine, my family's fine. Thank you for everything,” Vidal said, giving a thumbs-up.

Several Twitter users posted photographs of what they said were Vidal's car, which was badly mangled on the driver's side. The car's airbags appeared to have deployed.

It was not immediately clear how Vidal's arrest would affect his participation in the tournament.

Vidal, 28, who plays for Italian giants Juventus, is one of the biggest stars of Chilean football and a key figure in the country's attempts to win the Copa America.

The midfielder is currently the tournament's top goalscorer, having scored a penalty in the opening victory against Ecuador last Thursday before scoring twice in Monday's 3-3 draw with Mexico in Santiago.

Chile, currently top of Group A, meet Bolivia in their final first round match on Friday.

The combative midfielder is no stranger to controversy. In 2011 he was among a group of several players who were sanctioned and kicked out of a Chilean squad camp after turning up late to training. He was subsequently welcomed back to the fold after apologizing.

Earlier this season Juventus handed the midfielder a club record 100 000 euro ($112,000) fine after he was allegedly involved in a drunken brawl outside a Turin nightclub. – AFP

Chelsea closing in on Falcao

Chelsea are finalising the signing of Radamel Falcao on a one-season, £7million loan deal from Monaco.

|||

Chelsea are finalising the signing of Radamel Falcao on a one-season, £7million loan deal from Monaco.

The finer details were being discussed last night, with Monaco keen on taking Mario Pasalic or Charly Musonda on loan in return.

Falcao, 29, is with Colombia at the Copa America in Chile, preparing to face Brazil tomorrow.

Manchester United rejected the chance to sign the striker for £43.2m after a loan spell last season produced four goals in 29 games.

However, Jose Mourinho believes he can rekindle Falcao, saying: ‘It hurts me that people in England think the real Falcao is the one we saw at Manchester United. If I can help Falcao reach his level again, I will do it.’

Falcao’s arrival will prompt Loic Remy to consider his future at Stamford Bridge.

The 28-year-old is a target for West Ham and Crystal Palace but Chelsea would want close to £20m for the France international.

Meanwhile, Mourinho is playing hardball with Arsenal over their attempts to secure an £11m move for Petr Cech.

The Gunners want a deal for the Chelsea goalkeeper tied up this week, but are facing strong opposition from Mourinho.

Cech wants to join and it is understood Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich will not stand in the 33-year-old’s way.

However, Mourinho does not want to strengthen a rival by allowing Cech to move across London. The Chelsea boss has asked the Gunners for either Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain or Theo Walcott in return for Cech — but Arsene Wenger has rejected that proposal.

Mourinho would much prefer Cech to join Paris Saint-Germain, who are also interested. Nevertheless, Arsenal — knowing Abramovich has given Cech his blessing — are still confident of landing their man.

Mourinho’s reluctance to sanction Cech’s switch to the Emirates Stadium also stems from the lack of a ready-made replacement for the keeper.

Cech would leave Chelsea without a proven second-choice goalkeeper, something Mourinho is acutely aware of.

Stoke’s Asmir Begovic interests Chelsea, but the Bosnian does not want to be a No 2. QPR’s Rob Green is also a possible replacement. – Daily Mail

Wilshere inspired by Gascoigne

Paul Gascoigne’s fearless style inspired Jack Wilshere as England flew through the clouds to Slovenia.

|||

Paul Gascoigne’s fearless style inspired Jack Wilshere as England flew through the clouds to Slovenia.

Wilshere watched the new documentary film about Gazza during the flight to Ljubljana, marvelling at his footwork, invention and the iconic goal against Scotland at Euro 96.

By the time he had fastened his seatbelt for the return journey Wilshere was already floating on air, savouring the thrill of his first England goals — two long-range strikes Gascoigne would have been proud to call his own.

‘I watched the film on the plane and it did inspire me,’ said Wilshere. ‘You could tell by the way he was going out and playing for England that he didn’t feel any fear.

‘Sometimes I think players feel a little bit of fear and a bit of pressure when they play for their country. But he just wanted to go out there. He said he felt at his best when he was playing, with the ball at his feet. You do sometimes feel like that. He did it and he was England’s best player. So, it’s worth a try.’

Wilshere has found his goal touch late in the season. He scored only four for club and country, but three of those came in his last four games.Two for England in a 3-2 win in Slovenia and a breathtaking volley for Arsenal against West Bromwich Albion.

He rated his second on Sunday as the best. ‘It was for England and it put us in the lead,’ said Wilshere. ‘It was a great team goal. Jordan Henderson passed it to Adam Lallana and not many players have that ability to see I was coming. He was running the other way and flicked it back. It sat up perfectly and I hit it sweetly.

‘Then, I’d probably say the first one for England. I was backing up, it fell nicely and I thought: “Why not?”. Thankfully it went in.

‘You work for these kind of moments, especially with England. When you’re younger, you dream of playing for England. So the goals felt great because playing for your country is great and when you score it’s a special feeling.’

Wilshere admits a goal was overdue, as he won his 28th cap. ‘It wasn’t preying on my mind,’ he said. ‘But you look at your stats and it says 28 games and no goals.

‘I hope there will be more. I’ve been open about saying I haven’t scored enough. I get into good positions but haven’t scored. It’s strange because I’m playing a deeper role.’

In the absence of a natural holding midfielder, Wilshere has been identified to operate deeper, even though his instinct is always to go forward, skipping past tackles and bouncing one-twos.

Roy Hodgson tries to resist labels like ‘holding midfielder’ and does not want to neutralise a creative force but this role is all about anticipation and decision making.

Wilshere has studied video clips of midfielders who control the game from that area, like Andrea Pirlo and Xabi Alonso, as well as dribblers like Lionel Messi and Andres Iniesta, who are more akin to his natural game.

Despite his party-boy image, the 23-year-old Arsenal midfielder has a strong appetite to improve. He has impressed the England coaching staff with his willingness to commit to a role outside his comfort zone. He has started the last eight games when fit.

‘It’s the balance that’s important,’ said Wilshere. ‘Sometimes you have to shield and sometimes you have to press.

‘When we’re attacking, you’re backing up play but you’re trying to stop the counter-attack. You’re trying to read the position the ball will drop out in. That’s a big part of the role.’

Truer test lies ahead for the new generation and proposed friendlies against France, Spain, Holland and Germany will offer a better yardstick than this gentle qualifying group.

‘We don’t feel we’re the finished article yet,’ said Wilshere. ‘We’re beating teams that we should beat. But we’re playing well. Sometimes, we’re going behind and coming back, showing great character. We’re unbeaten in a season for the first time in 24 years.’ – Daily Mail

No time to work on basics - Mashaba

Bafana Bafana coach Shakes Mashaba says the matter of the national side’s goal drought is beyond his control.

|||

Bafana Bafana coach Shakes Mashaba says the matter of the national side’s goal drought is beyond his control.

The national team has now played three matches without scoring and there are fears that the lack of fire power up front could be the case again when Bafana Bafana host Angola in an international friendly at the Cape Town Stadium, Green Point, today (kick-off 3pm).

The match will be co-hosted by Safa and the City of Cape Town to highlight Youth Day celebrations and place the Mother City in the pan-African spotlight.

Speaking to the media after yesterday morning’s training session at the match venue, Mashaba said that when the national team is in camp there is no capacity to work on “the basics of the game” because most of the time was spent on “technical matters”. He said the first day or two of a camp was usually a time for the squad to arrive, and on the remaining two days players will work on the game plan for the match.

“There is no time, at national level, to work on the basics of the game, no chance,” said Mashaba. “It’s something that’s done at club level and as for strikers not scoring goals, it’s not something I want to say too much about because I won’t tramp on the toes of the clubs, they are our suppliers after all.

“The matter of scoring does not only rest with the strikers. When we look at football across the globe, goals are also scored by midfielders and even defenders. We need to be one step ahead and in keeping with modern times.”

In past encounters, South Africa have never lost to Angola, who are known as Palancas Negras (Sable Antelopes) to their fans. In seven meetings, SA have won four and drew three. Several of those goals against Palancas Negras were scored by Cape Town-born strikers Mark Williams and Benni McCarthy, so playing in the Mother City may be a good omen for Bafana Bafana.

Unlike Bafana, who were held to a goalless draw against Gambia on Saturday, Angola will arrive in Cape Town on the back of a 4-0 home win over the Central Africa Republic on Saturday, in an Afcon Group B first-round qualifying match.

The four-goal victory has not escaped Mashaba’s attention: “We know what kind of competition to expect from them. They’re very tough, quick going forward and they push up all the time.”

Mashaba said he was encouraged by the performance at training where the strikers seemed to be at the top of their game. He hoped that they would carry this form into the match so that it could put smiles on the faces of Bafana fans in the Mother City.

“The game is important to try and bring smiles to our people’s faces. We can only hope that they will come and support the team, because the boys really need the support,” said Mashaba.”

“It’s most unfortunate sometimes when people get really discouraged when results do not come the way they want them to.”

According to Mashaba, there won’t be a lack of confidence in the ranks. “We have dealt with the game that we played against Gambia; that is now history. We’ve spoken to the players and, as you have seen them in training, they were alright. They showed some willingness. “In terms of the mood; it’s okay. Everyone is vibrant.”

Good news from the Bafana Bafana camp is that Orlando Pirates midfielder Oupa Manyisa could be fit to play. – ANA

Milan - AC Milan dismissed manager Filippo Inzaghi after a disappointing season in which the side finished 10th in Serie A and failed to qualify for Europe.

Inzaghi, who spent 10 years at the club as a player, struggled throughout much of a campaign that brought their lowest number of wins since 2001 and his future had long been questioned.

“AC Milan communicate that Filippo Inzaghi has been discharged of his responsibilities as first team coach. The club thank him for his work,” the club said in a statement on their website.

Chelsea homeless for 3 years?

Chelsea face finding a temporary home for up to three years as they roll out plans to build a new stadium with a capacity over 60 000.

|||

Chelsea face finding a temporary home for up to three years as they roll out plans to build a new stadium at Stamford Bridge with a capacity over 60 000.

The London club informed its local residents, club members and season-ticket holders yesterday that the process was ready to move into a consultation phase.

Final plans will not be drawn until consultation is over, and the club insist they remain some distance from lodging any formal applications with Hammersmith and Fulham council.

But feasibility studies are leading Chelsea towards the idea that they will be forced to abandon the ground they have called home for the last 110 years, clear the site and start from scratch, digging below street level to create space for an arena with an improved capacity.

This would send them in search of somewhere to play while work is ongoing.

Nearby Twickenham would be an ideal venue, and there have been preliminary talks with the RFU, although this solution remains highly unlikely because of the opposition

from the rugby world to hosting football at HQ.

Wembley is viewed as a serious alternative, although this would also be far from straightforward not least because of a strict annual limit on the number of live events which can be held there.

Roman Abramovich has always been aware that an expansion project at Stamford Bridge would be fraught with complications.

It is a technical challenge because it is only 12 acres — when 20 acres is normally considered the minimum for a stadium of the proposed size — and it is hemmed in by railway lines and the Fulham Road, which is awash with listed buildings.

Chelsea will look at building stands up and over the railway lines and different ways of getting up to 20,000 extra fans in and out quickly and safely.

It is an extraordinarily ambitious undertaking and likely to leave Abramovich with a bill of up to £500million. – Daily Mail

Bafana change four for Angola

Bafana Bafana head coach Ephraim Mashaba has made four changes to the squad that will face Angola in the international friendly match.

|||

Cape Town – Bafana Bafana head coach Ephraim Mashaba has made four changes to the squad that will face Angola in the international friendly match at the Cape Town Stadium (kick-off at 15h00).

Itumeleng Khune retains his place in goals, making his 67th appearance for South Africa.

Mashaba has made two changes in defence. Anele Ngcongca and Rivaldo Coetzee will be joined by Patrick Phungwayo and Clayton Daniels, who take the places of Thabo Matlaba and Thulani Hlatshwayo respectively.

Bongani Zungu and Jabulani Shongwe have been preferred over Andile Jali and the injured Oupa Manyisa who hasn’t recovered from a knock on the shin and an ankle sprain suffered in the match against Gambia recently.

Thulani Serero and Thamsanqa Gabuza complete the starting XI.

Ngcongca will again captain the side.

“This is a tricky for us as we are using it as preparations for the 2017 AFCON qualifiers which resume in September, and we are also looking at the upcoming 2016 CHAN qualifier against Mauritius this coming weekend. I believe the changes we have made will give us a lot of room as we have to give other players a chance because we have called up a big squad since we have three matches back to back,” said Mashaba.

“It is unfortunate that sometimes results don’t come the way we want them to, so the game against Angola is very important to bring back the smiles on the faces of our fans.

“We can only hope they come and support the team because without them we are nothing. We are expecting a very tough match because the Angolans are very quick going forward, so it is going to be high level of competition against them. Also they come here at the back of a very good win against Central Africa Republic (CAR) in the AFCON qualifiers where they won 4-nil so we have to be at our best to defeat them.”

Twelve players have been named on bench – goalkeeper Jackson Mabokgwane, Tshepo Gumede, Thulani Hlatshwayo, Siyabonga Nhlapho, Ntsikelelo Nyauza, Marc van Heerden, Thabo Matlaba, Gift Motupa, Andile Jali, Mandla Masango, Bonginkosi Ntuli and Sphelele Ntshangase.

Six substitutes will be allowed as this is an international friendly match.

Four players have not been considered for the match – Manyisa, Vuyisile Wana, Thuso Phala and Brilliant Khuzwayo.

SA’s starting XI vs Angola: Itumeleng Khune (GK), Anele Ngcongca (c), Rivaldo Coetzee, Clayton Daniels, Patrick Phungwayo, Bongani Zungu, May Mahlangu, Jabulani Shongwe, Thulani Serero, Ayanda Patosi, Thamsanqa Gabuza

Chile, Mexico in six goal thriller

Mexico frustrated Chile's hopes of clinching a Copa America quarter-final berth , snatching a 3-3 draw in a pulsating battle.

|||

Mexico frustrated Chile's hopes of clinching a Copa America quarter-final berth, snatching a 3-3 draw in a pulsating battle with the host nation in Santiago.

Two goals from Mexico's veteran striker Vicente Vuoso cancelled out a brace from Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal for Chile, who also had two goals ruled out for offside in a frenetic late onslaught.

Mexico spent the opening exchanges camped in their own half as Chile swarmed forward looking for an early goal to put them on the path to the quarter-finals from Group A following their opening win over Ecuador.

But the Mexicans stung the hosts on virtually their first foray into enemy territory, sweeping forward on the counter-attack to score when Vuoso prodded home Juan Carlos Medina's cross on 21 minutes.

Chile hit back instantly however, getting back on level terms within a minute thanks to a towering header from Vidal. Charles Aranguiz swung in a corner and Vidal powered home a long-range header to make it 1-1.

The Chilean goal failed to deter Mexico and only a superb save from Claudio Bravo, parrying a Gerardo Flores header onto the bar from close range denied 'El Tri' from taking a 2-1 lead.

But Mexico did not have long to wait before grabbing their second goal, Atletico Madrid striker Raul Jimenez heading home Adrian Aldrete's corner to make it 2-1.

Chile again poured forward, and equalised for the second time in the 42nd minute when Vidal's pinpoint cross was met by Eduardo Vargas, who guided his header into the bottom left-hand corner.

The home side looked to have taken control of the game early in the second half and deservedly took the lead through Vidal's second penalty of the tournament.

The midfielder won the spot-kick after being bundled over by Flores and stepped up to convert and make it 3-2.

Mexico refused to roll over though and on 66 minutes struck back. A long ball over the top from Aldrete found Vuoso, and the striker kept his cool to steer home his second past Bravo.

Chile thought they had grabbed a winner on 80 minutes though, but Alexis Sanchez was adjudged fractionally offside after jabbing home a low shot. – AFP

Blatter could make a Fifa U-turn

Sepp Blatter is actively considering reversing his promise to stand down as Fifa president, one of his advisers said.

|||

London - Sepp Blatter is actively considering reversing his promise to stand down as Fifa president, one of his advisers has told Sky News.

Klaus Stoehlker, who advised Blatter during the recent election campaign, said Blatter could remain head of world soccer's governing body if a “convincing candidate” to replace him did not emerge.

Blatter stepped down as Fifa president almost two weeks ago, as the Swiss-based body was rocked by corruption allegations.

Stoehlker, who Sky News says stressed he is not an official spokesman, was in a meeting when contacted by Reuters and unable to comment immediately.

Switzerland's Schweiz am Sonntag newspaper reported on Sunday that Blatter, 79, may seek to stay on.

Fifa refused to be drawn when contacted by Reuters, saying only that “Klaus Stoehlker's mandate from the Fifa President ended on 31 May 2015” and emailing a link to Blatter's two-week-old resignation speech.

Caf denies asking Blatter to stay on

Africa's soccer confederation (Caf) has not heard of any of its members asking Sepp Blatter to stay on as Fifa president.

|||

Cape Town - Africa's soccer confederation (Caf) has not heard of any of its members asking Sepp Blatter to stay on as Fifa president, an executive committee member said on Monday.

“At Caf level we are not aware of any African countries who have written to ask Blatter to stay on,” Kalusha Bwalya, a Caf executive committee member and president of the Football Association of Zambia, told Reuters.

“We feel it is better to get on with our own work in the mean time and see what everyone has to say in the next months. Everybody is waiting for clarity.”

The confusion surround Fifa's leadership took a new twist on Sunday when the Schweiz am Sonntag newspaper reported that Blatter, 79, may seek to stay on as president, less than two weeks after he promised to step down, four days after being re-elected.

The report said Blatter had received messages of support from African and Asian football associations, asking him to rethink his decision.

Blatter was honoured by the support and had not ruled out remaining in office, the newspaper said, citing an anonymous source close to him.

But Bwalya, a former Zambia international, said Caf was waiting for Fifa's executive committee meeting before taking a position.

“The African members will then report back to the Caf executive when we met on August 6 and we'll see what will be done after that,” he said.

“At the moment there are a lot of rumours floating about and everyone is rushing to turn the smallest piece of information into a story.”

Blatter was re-elected for a fifth term as Fifa president on May 27 when his opponent Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein withdrew after Blatter won the first round of voting by 133 votes to 73.

Four days later, as corruption allegations continued to batter Fifa, Blatter, in a shock announcement, said he would stand down and call a new election, due to be held between December and February.

The FBI are investigating bribery and corruption at Fifa, including scrutiny of how soccer's governing body awarded World Cup hosting rights to Russia and Qatar.

Uefa insiders told Reuters that European soccer's governing body was left perplexed by the reports that Blatter would stand again and that the plot would be too outrageous even for a Hollywood script.

Officially, European soccer's governing body did not want to comment but the German football association (DFB) called on Blatter, who is staying on until the election, to leave quickly.

“We only know the media reports which strengthen our clear position,” spokesman Ralf Koettker told reporters. “Blatter's announced resignation must be formally completed as soon as possible.”

Germany coach Joachim Loew said: “As far as I can speak as a coach, Fifa must have a new structure and there has to be a certain new start because all of this has damaged football, and that was dangerous. I think resigning from a resignation should normally not happen.”

Fifa has not directly denied the newspaper report, instead referring Reuters to the speech Blatter made on June 2 when he said he would not be a candidate.

However, Domenico Scala, the official overseeing the process of choosing a new president, said on Sunday that Blatter's departure was an “indispensable” part of planned reforms to soccer's governing body. – Reuters

Bafana firing blanks, again!

South Africa fired blanks in their opening Afcon qualifier against Gambia, again highlighting Bafana’s glaring weakness.

|||

Durban – South Africa’s goalless draw in their opening Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against the tiny nation of Gambia left them on the back foot and with a major scoring riddle to solve.

Bafana Bafana coach Ephraim Mashaba stood by his team selection even though Saturday’s stalemate extended their recent poor scoring form.

South Africa fired blanks in the Cosafa Cup with goalless draws against Malawi and Botswana to bow out early from the regional competition last month.

In the build-up to that event the side also failed to hit the back of the net against Lesotho.

Saturday night Mashaba fielded Thamsanqa Gabuza, who only trained once with the squad after he arrived as a late replacement for Tokelo Rantie, who failed to show up because of his wedding.

The coach said he had to wait on Rantie because the country had no other strikers like the England-based professional.

“Rantie is the only player in South Africa who can harass defenders in front and behind, and he can create chances to score by himself,” said Mashaba after the game at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

Nevertheless Mashaba’s preference for rookie First Division campaigners such as Siphelele Ntshangase and Gift Motupa ahead of experienced pros such as Kermit Erasmus, Bernard Parker and Lehlohonolo Majoro would have raised eyebrows.

Ntshangase and Motupa are support strikers at best, and the former delivered in that role when he replaced Thulani Serero midway through the second half against the Scorpions.

However his poor finishing cost South Africa the win. With two minutes left on the clock he had a great chance one-on-one with the Gambian goalie but curled a strike wide.

The Scorpions had little sting of their own up front but promised to be much stronger as the qualifiers progressed, particularly because they would have more time to prepare for the next round in early September when they host Cameroon in Banjul.

Their new Swiss coach Raoul Savoy, appointed last month, fielded a new-look side put together with players from the Gambian diaspora. Many of them trained together for the first time when they camped in Uganda and recorded a 1-1 draw against the Cranes.

“We’re not thinking of qualifying. But imagine if this team trains properly for about 10 days ...” said Savoy.

“If we win against Cameroon at home then we can do something. In football there are no small games or small teams. We did well to get a point; we’re not small, and we have got some top players in Europe,” he added.

In contrast South Africa has a thriving league and the national team has facilities that are the envy of many countries on the continent.

Yet the goal-scoring issue has plagued all the recent national coaches from Pitso Mosimane, through Gordon Igesund, to Mashaba.

“We need to work on our scoring, nothing else. We played good football otherwise,” insisted Mashaba.

“As long as we talk of grooming strikers at Bafana we’ll go nowhere.

“The national team is not development level; there’s no time to make players. We need players to come and perform, that’s all.

“The 16 PSL teams are talking of a goal-scoring problem, and now you expect the national team, which gets together for four days, to solve the scoring problem. We can only guide the players on what we want at national team level,” said Mashaba.

Whatever the solutions are, Mashaba’s next qualifier away to Mauritania is a “must-win” game because only the group winners qualify for the 2017 Afcon in Gabon.

South Africa are in Cape Town where they host Angola in a friendly tomorrow afternoon.

The only doubtful player is midfielder Oupa Manyisa who injured his leg against Gambia. - The Star

City confident of landing Sterling

Manchester City are growing increasingly confident aboout landing Raheem Sterling for less than Liverpool’s £50million valuation.

Manchester City are growing increasingly confident aboout landing Raheem Sterling for less than Liverpool’s £50million valuation.

Sportsmail understands City will not pay more than £40m for the England star.

Liverpool’s hopes of sparking a bidding war for the forward in an attempt to maximise the transfer fee they’ll receive looks unlikely to materialise.

Arsenal and Chelsea are both interested, but have other priorities in the transfer market, while Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are unlikely to pay beyond the £30m City, who will make an improved bid this week, have already offered.

Sterling has just two years left on his current deal and Liverpool know his value will begin to fall rapidly over the next 12 months as a result, a factor Etihad chiefs are also more than aware of.

Meanwhile, Juventus defender Patrice Evra has urged his former Manchester United team-mate Paul Pogba to stay in Turin rather than move to City.

Pogba has been linked with a £60m move to the Etihad Stadium but Evra said: ‘I have told him he needs to make the best decision for him.

‘If he wants to leave for one of Europe’s big clubs then that is fine but I think it would be a good idea if he stays where he is. I don’t think Juventus will let him leave.’ – Daily Mail

Jose set to sign £30m deal

Jose Mourinho’s new £30million four-year deal with Chelsea is expected to be signed in the coming weeks.

|||

Jose Mourinho’s new £30million four-year deal with Chelsea is expected to be signed in the coming weeks, with both sides satisfied with the progress of negotiations.

Mourinho is set to commit to the Premier League champions until 2019 and though Chelsea are not ready to announce the deal yet, there are no concerns on either side and both club and manager are anticipating the contract being signed imminently.

The relative ease of negotiations contrasts with the stormy relationship Mourinho had with the board of directors in his last spell at the club when he eventually left by mutual consent in 2007 as the acrimony became unmanageable.

But senior figures at Chelsea have stressed that board members, Mourinho (right) and owner Roman Abramovich now have far more experience in how to make the club run smoothly and that the manager’s current spell in charge has been characterised by co-operation.

Mourinho is expected to earn £7.5m a year and his anticipated signature on the deal will be seen as a significant staging post in his desire to build a legacy at the club.

Mourinho has previously been accused of short-termism, with his spell of three years and three months at Chelsea between 2004 and 2007 being the longest he has remained at any club.

But he has said that he would like to participate in a long-term project at Chelsea and see the current crop of young players mature in the first team.

Meanwhile, Chelsea target Toby Alderweireld has conceded that he does not know where his future lies.

The defender was on loan at Southampton from Atletico Madrid last season, and the Saints have an option to buy him this summer, but he is wanted by Mourinho, as well as Manchester City and Tottenham.

Alderweireld, who will speak to Atletico about his future when he returns from holiday, said: ‘The only thing I can say is that I’m happy in England, but it isn’t just up to me.

‘I don’t have an answer now, but it would be good to come back to England.’ – Daily Mail
