Real set to pounce on De Gea?

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea's future is up in the air after manager Louis van Gaal acknowledged the threat of Real Madrid's reported interest in signing him.

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea's future is up in the air after manager Louis van Gaal acknowledged the threat of Real Madrid's reported interest in signing him.

De Gea was forced off by a hamstring injury during United's 1-1 draw at home to Arsenal on Sunday and, with Real Madrid thought to be preparing to pounce, it may have been his final appearance for the club.

While Van Gaal professed not to know if Madrid have made a formal offer for De Gea, who began his career with their cross-town rivals Atletico, he accepts that his club face a struggle to prevent the 24-year-old falling into their clutches.

Asked if he had accepted that De Gea was heading for the exit, Van Gaal responded: “You are asking things I cannot answer, because I don't know.

“I have said a transfer is an individual thing. It's also a process. He has to decide. We have given a fantastic contract (offer) because we want him to stay.

“But I analyse his position and then I say he is Spanish, he is a Spanish international -- still behind (Iker) Casillas -- and now a Spanish club is coming.

“His girlfriend is Spanish, his father and mother come every week or two weeks here to watch, and still it is difficult for him. It's a big compliment for Manchester United.”

United have been happy to do business with Madrid in the past when it has suited them, with Javier Hernandez's loan move to the Bernabeu this season echoing previous transfers involving David Beckham, Gabriel Heinze and Ruud van Nistelrooy.

But they also endured a long, ill-tempered stand-off with the 10-time European champions over the services of Cristiano Ronaldo, who eventually left for the Spanish capital in a world-record deal in 2009.

British press reports suggest United have already drawn up a shortlist of potential replacements for De Gea, with Tottenham Hotspur's Hugo Lloris and Chelsea's Petr Cech among the players who have been cited.

De Gea's premature departure against Arsenal enabled his countryman Victor Valdes to make his United debut, four months after signing, and the former Barcelona goalkeeper is likely to be required to deputise again at Hull City on the season's final day.

United led 1-0 through Ander Herrera's 30th-minute volley when De Gea left the fray, but Arsenal equalised eight minutes from time when Theo Walcott's cross-shot was deflected past Valdes by home substitute Tyler Blackett.

Arsenal can effectively secure third place in the Premier League table, and with it a Champions League group-stage berth, by avoiding defeat at home to Sunderland on Wednesday in their game in hand.

Van Gaal conceded he would rather avoid the inconvenience of entering the Champions League in the play-off round in mid-August – predicting a pair of “stressful games” – but he drew heart from the support of United's fans.

“It's amazing when you are fourth and they are shouting and clapping their hands so long for us,” the Dutchman told his post-match press conference.

“I feel the warmth of the fans. I like it very much. I had never that experience in my other clubs.”

Reflecting on the prospect of avoiding the Champions League play-offs, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said: “It takes the pressure off during the holiday period and in the preparation.

“You have always that in mind when you prepare, so it will be great when we do it, but it is still to do.

“We have two home games. Let's focus on the next one. We can secure that on Wednesday night against Sunderland.”

Sunday's draw followed Arsenal's 2-1 win at Old Trafford in the FA Cup quarter-finals in March, and they have also recorded wins over Manchester City and Liverpool since the turn of the year.

“We feel we have made progress compared to last season,” Wenger added.

“We have been stronger against the big teams, so that's a good platform to do better.” – AFP

LVG wants more improvement

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal received a rousing reception from the Old Trafford fans after the 1-1 Premier League draw with Arsenal.

|||

London - Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal received a rousing reception from the Old Trafford fans after the 1-1 Premier League draw with Arsenal which ensured they will almost certainly finish fourth in his first season in charge.

For almost two decades when Alex Ferguson was Manchester United manager, matches against Arsene Wenger's Arsenal often decided titles.

But times have changed.

After the embarrassment of finishing seventh last season under David Moyes, Van Gaal has steadied the United ship and a place in the Champions League qualifying round is an acceptable prize.

“I am satisfied we have set our goal and reached that,” the Dutchman told Sky Sports.

“From what I have seen of the fans they are pleased.

“We have not yet qualified for Champions League. It is always stressful as you can meet opponent who is halfway through a season already.”

United dominated the first half against Arsenal at Old Trafford and led through Ander Herrera's far-post volley, but substitute Tyler Blackett deflected in Theo Walcott's strike eight minutes from time to earn Arsenal a point.

“You can say we are unlucky because it is the third deflected goal in a row and falls in our net,” Van Gaal said.

“But I have said it is not unlucky to the players. You have to force luck by finishing games. You see Arsenal want to come back so you have to stick together and be compact.

“I have said Arsenal have maybe the best team but Chelsea can finish the game which Arsenal cannot do and we can't either. That is important.”

Van Gaal will be there again next season to continue his re-building programme.

“As the manager I want more,” he said. “Next year we shall fight for more.”

Van Gaal refused to be drawn on transfer dealings at Old Trafford, but hinted that goalkeeper David de Gea might move back to Spain with Real Madrid.

“David de Gea shall not leave us so easily,” he said. “Of course, we are a great club and he wants to participate. But he is Spanish and his girlfriend is Spanish.”

United, two points behind third-placed Arsenal, must win at Hull City in their final game next Sunday and hope the Gunners lose their two remaining home matches if they are to climb into an automatic Champions League group place. – Reuters

Barca clinch La Liga title

Barcelona are La Liga champions for the fifth time in seven years after a clinical Lionel Messi strike secured victory against Atletico Madrid.

|||

Madrid - Treble-chasing Barcelona are La Liga champions for the fifth time in seven years after a clinical Lionel Messi strike secured a 1-0 victory away to Atletico Madrid that wrapped up the title with a game to spare on Sunday.

Cristiano Ronaldo hit a record-extending 26th La Liga hat-trick for Real Madrid in their 4-1 victory away to Espanyol but Barca cannot be caught now with a four point lead.

Messi combined with Pedro Rodriguez and then slotted home from the centre of the penalty area with 65 minutes gone.

It had been a cagey game but the talent of the Argentine shone through again to break the deadlock and help Luis Enrique to his first piece of silverware at the helm of Barcelona.

The Catalan side have dominated the list of La Liga titles in recent years and remain on course to repeat their trophy treble of 2009.

They are through to the Champions League final on June 6 to face Juventus and will play Athletic Bilbao in the King's Cup showpiece on May 30.

“Last year was tough for us and we were not good enough to be champions but this year we are doing well,” midfielder Sergio Busquets told reporters.

“This is the first trophy for us and we are going to celebrate it as it is the most difficult tournament because we face all the teams.

“It is the most important although the Champions League is the most prestigious,” he added.

Barcelona were missing Luis Suarez from their devastating attacking trio due to a hamstring injury with Pedro stepping into the forward line.

Atletico provided their usual aerial threat and keeper Claudio Bravo clawed away a Jose Maria Gimenez header from a corner early on while Messi wasted a golden chance with a weak header in front of goal that went straight to keeper Jan Oblak.

The game settled into a contest where Barca had plenty of possession, but lacked precision in the final third of the pitch, against an Atletico side that looked to soak up the pressure.

The gaps were beginning to emerge in the Atletico backline as Barca continued to press and Messi found space after playing a one-two with Pedro before finding the back of the net.

Minutes later Messi assisted Neymar who could have doubled their advantage but the Brazilian's shot flew over the crossbar.

Ronaldo showed his typical competitiveness as he lifted Real to victory in the second half against Espanyol despite the La Liga title escaping their grasp.

The Portuguese now has two more hat-tricks overall in the league than Messi and he also leads this season's scoring charts with 45 La Liga goals, four more than the Argentine.

Real looked low on morale during the first 45 minutes following their Champions League elimination last Wednesday by Juventus but Ronaldo put them ahead after being found by Karim Benzema on the hour.

While Cristian Stuani pulled a goal back for Espanyol, Marcelo restored Real's lead and then Ronaldo scored twice more in the final eight minutes to seal the win.

Elsewhere in the battle for the Champions League places Valencia, in fourth, drew 1-1 with Celta Vigo and Sevilla a point below them in fifth beat Almeria 2-1. – Reuters

Big night belongs to Tefu

Tefu Mashamaite was the big winner at the 2014/25 PSL awards, winning R450 000 and the coveted Footballer of the Season award.

|||

Tefu Mashamaite’s multiple success at last night’s 2014/15 PSL awards was a triumph for teamwork and a sign that even in this era of the Messi’s and Ronaldo’s, good old defensive play and hard work are still important in the beautiful game.

The Kaizer Chiefs captain walked away with three awards – Footballer of the Season, Absa Premiership Players’ Player of the Season, as well as Absa Premiership Defender of the Season – to swell his bank account by a whooping R450000.

Mashamaite, installed Chiefs captain in place of the flamboyant Itumeleng Khune, lead Amakhosi with some aplomb this season as his solid displays from the back set the foundation for a magnificent campaign that saw his team literally walk the championship.

Solid in the tackle, excellent in reading the game, fantastic in the air and calm under pressure, the defender they fondly call Masha at Naturena was an influential presence for the champions throughout the season and even chipped in with some goals for a successful campaign that also delivered the MTN8 title.

Impressively, Mashamaite played in all of Chiefs’ league matches and got booked only twice – the sign of a defender who times his tackles perfectly.

In a game that is often obsessed with the skilful goalscorer ala the Barcelona or Real Madrid stars Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, Masha-maite’s success was a reminder of the importance of good defensive play, with that good old adage that defences win championship and attacks win matches ringing so true.

For while Chiefs were fantastic in attack, their title triumph was achieved on the basis of a solid defence that saw them concede a miserly 14 goals in their 30 matches, despite using all three of their goalkeepers this season.

And Mashamaite’s steadiness was pretty crucial in the heart of the defence where he performed very well with either Erick Mathoho or Morgan Gould alongside him.

Mashamaite was not the only Amakhosi member to walk away with a big smile from the Sandton Convention Centre last night, his coach Stuart Baxter taking home the Coach of the Season accolade.

George Maluleka was voted the best player of the MTN8 competition, which Chiefs won earlier in the season, and walked away with the Last Man Standing award and R80000 in prize money.

The rest of the awards were shared among the clubs, with BIDVest Wits’ Moeneeb Josephs and Phumlani Ntshangase winning the Absa Premiership Goalkeeper of the Season and Absa Premiership Young Player of the Season awards, respectively.

Mamelodi Sundowns’ Teko Modise walked away with two gongs, the Absa Premiership Midfielder of the Season as well as the Nedbank Cup Player of the Tournament.

SuperSport United’s Dove Wome was the best player of the Telkom Knockout, which his team won. All the Winners

Bafana hit by injuries in Lesotho

Shakes charges have suffered four injuries during two matches against Lesotho in Maseru in days.

|||

Johannesburg – The Bafana Bafana squad has suffered four injuries during two matches against Lesotho in Maseru over the past few days.

South Africa played to a goalless and 1-1 draw against Lesotho on Thursday, and Saturday, respectively.

In the process, Marc van Heerden (Achilles tendon), Puleng Tlolane (thigh muscle), Gift Motupa and Cole Alexander (both ankles) all picked up injuries, which are worrying the technical staff.

Tlolane and Alexander were stretchered off in the second match and were replaced by Moeketsi Sekola and Siyabonga Nhlapho respectively.

”Tlolane clashed with the opposition goalkeeper during the match and had a knock on the knee. We suspect a mild contrution or bruise which indicates it’s not a bad injury. He has slight pain so he is now on medication, but there are no major worries there and we believe he should be up and running in the next 48 to 72 hours,” said team medico Dr Tshepo Molobi.

“With regards to Cole Alexander, he twisted his ankle outwardly and has pain around that area after a tackle. He had some swelling when he was treated on the field, but as a precautionary measure we would like to do an MRI scan just to be sure it’s nothing serious.”

Van Heerden did not play in any of the two matches, while Motupa earned his first Bafana Bafana cap in the first clash but got injured at training a day before the second encounter.

“We will take the final decision on the two when we arrive back home. We will check them again and see how serious the injuries are. Hopefully by the end of this afternoon we should have a clearer picture of what we are dealing with,” added Dr Molobi.

Coach Shakes Mashaba said he was worried about the four but said he was hoping for the best.

“We have to be careful on how we deal with each case because the registration or deregistration of players for the tournament closes on Wednesday (May 20). When we get back home we must reassess them thoroughly. I believe that by Monday afternoon we will know where we stand. We can’t wait too long, we have to make decisions and if we are bringing in any new players we have to act quickly,” said Mashaba.

The squad is expected back in South Africa on Sunday. – ANA

Toure double lifts City to 4-2 win

Yaya Toure scored twice to lift Manchester City to a 4-2 win at Swansea City on Sunday.

|||

London – Yaya Toure scored twice to lift Manchester City to a 4-2 win at Swansea City in an entertaining Premier League game on Sunday in which the hosts fought back from 2-0 down to level the scores.

Ivorian midfielder Toure struck his 50th league goal for second-placed City to give them a first-half lead and James Milner added a second.

Gylfi Sigurdsson pegged one back for Swansea with an excellent curling effort on the stroke of half-time and Bafetimbi Gomes struck his fifth goal in as many games to level the scores early in the second half.

As the hosts pushed on to complete a remarkable turnaround, Toure squeezed the ball in at the near post to restore the visitors’ lead before City keeper Joe Hart made a stunning save to keep out a header from Federico Fernandez.

City’s former Swansea striker Wilfried Bony added the fourth in stoppage-time with a well-placed finish and City moved six points ahead of Arsenal with one game left this season.

Later on Sunday, fourth-placed Manchester United host Arsenal, who are one position and two points above them and have a game in hand on both Manchester clubs. – Reuters

Burnley resigned to lose top scorer

Relegated Burnley are resigned to losing top scorer Danny Ings when his contract expires at the end of the season.

|||

London – Relegated Burnley are resigned to losing top scorer Danny Ings when his contract expires at the end of the season, manager Sean Dyche said, with a host of clubs keen to sign the England Under-21 striker.

The 22-year-old has scored 10 goals in his first Premier League season but his strikes could not help Burnley beat the drop and their relegation to the Championship was confirmed last week.

Ings has been linked with Manchester United and Liverpool when he becomes a free agent, though any club would have to pay a fee, decided by a tribunal, because he is under 24.

Dyche believes Ings will move to keep playing top-flight football.

“You can never give 100 percent guarantees. It’s probable that was a farewell from Danny though,” Dyche said following a goalless draw with Stoke City on Saturday in their final home game of the season.

It appeared to be Ings’s final game at Turf Moor in a Burnley shirt, with the striker thanking the fans in the programme and saying an emotional goodbye during a lap of honour.

“It’s good to see his development. But it looks like it won’t continue with us. He and his agent have put the message out that they are looking at pastures new,” Dyche added.

Ings, who moved to Burnley from Bournemouth in 2011, has also been linked with a move to Spanish side Real Sociedad, who are coached by former Manchester United manager David Moyes. – Reuters

Fiji hits SA for six in Sevens

Fiji has snatched the Sevens World Series crown for the first time in nine years, with a 19-7 win over SA.

|||

London – Fiji were crowned Sevens World Series champions for the first time in nine years with a 19-7 win over South Africa on the final day of the season at Twickenham on Sunday.

The victory over second-placed South Africa came in the quarter-final of the tournament in London and guaranteed Fiji the overall world title, regardless of who wins the final.

“It's an amazing day,” Fiji captain Osea Kolinisau, whose team finished with a 100 percent record in pool matches this season with 27 wins from 27 games, told the tournament website(http://ift.tt/1ws1t53).

“We are really thankful that we have finished the Series with the title, it has been a tough journey all along.”

Fiji's first win since 2006, and their second since the series began in 1999, broke 12-times winners New Zealand's stranglehold on the trophy.

The Kiwis, who had won the last four series, face England in the quarter-finals later on Sunday.

The hosts confirmed that they will be the team to represent Britain in the inaugural rugby sevens tournament at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro after guaranteeing a top-four finish with two pool wins on Saturday. – Reuters

Feeling the San Siro pressure: Mancini

San Siro has become a hindrance for Inter, coach Roberto Mancini complained after the Juves home loss.

|||

Milan – San Siro has become a hindrance rather than a help for Inter Milan, coach Roberto Mancini said following their 2-1 home defeat by champions Juventus.

“It does weigh on you. We should win all the time here but instead we struggle,” Mancini told Inter’s website (www.inter.it) after their fifth home league defeat of the season on Saturday.

“The stadium should be our fortress but we’re not incisive enough. We should be winning nearly all our games here.”

The defeat left Inter eighth in the table and in danger of missing out on European football for the second time in three seasons.

“The Europa League is clearly much further away from us after this game,” said Mancini.

“We have lots of work to do to build a team with experienced, quality players who can lift the side in matches like this simply because they’re used to playing in them.”

Inter, who drew 1-1 at Juventus earlier in the season, are 31 points behind their rivals, although Mancini said the difference between his side and Juventus was not as big as the gap suggested.

“The real difference isn’t that great, as you could see in the two matches we played,” he said. “They’re the best team at the moment but if we do a good job in the transfer market we’ll keep growing.” – Reuters

No fairytale return on cards: Gerrard

Steven Gerrard, who is getting ready for his US adventure, has scuttled hopes of a Liverpool loan return.

|||

London –There was no happy ending to Steven Gerrard’s Anfield farewell and there will be no fairytale return to play for his boyhood club after the Liverpool captain ruled out coming back on loan when he begins his American adventure.

Having lived in Liverpool all his life, Gerrard is getting ready to abandon Merseyside for the US for a swan-song with Los Angeles Galaxy in Major League Soccer.

After Liverpool suffered a 3-1 loss to Crystal Palace in his final home game after 17 years of silver service in more than 700 matches, Gerrard said a playing return was not on the cards.

“I don’t think I’ll come back on loan after today’s performance,” he said in a pitchside interview.

“I think I am going to have to go away and reflect for a few years and see what’s there for me in a couple of years.

“But hopefully I’ll stay involved in the game because I’ve lived here (Liverpool) for a long time and I love it.”

Having ruled out returning to Liverpool in the U.S. off-season, Gerrard can focus on eking the last reserves of energy out of his 34-year-old legs in the MLS, a step down from the ferocious pace of England’s ultra-competitive Premier League.

It was perhaps fitting, if not part of the script, that Gerrard signed off from Anfield with a performance that suggested his best days were in the past.

This season has shown that the bustling midfielder is no longer the force he was and, while his playing time at Liverpool would have become increasingly sporadic had he stayed, a move to the U.S. could hand him a new lease of life.

He has left the door open, however, to returning to the club that is so close to his heart in a coaching capacity.

Liverpool’s owners posted a farewell message on the club website (www.liverpoolfc.com) saying Gerrard would “always have a home here during our stewardship of this incredible club.

“He can, and will, return in the appropriate capacity, at the appropriate time,” the message read.

Gerrard, however, is aware that he will have to prove he has what it takes to make it as a coach.

“You have to be good enough,” he told the BBC. “This is a big club and can be brutal at times. I’m trying to go through the coaching badges and it’s a bridge I will cross in a couple of years.”– Reuters

Sundowns win Nedbank Cup final

Mamelodi Sundowns beat Ajax Cape Town 4-3 on penalties to win the Nedbank Cup at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.

|||

Port Elizabeth - Mamelodi Sundowns beat Ajax Cape Town 4-3 on penalties to win the Nedbank Cup at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, in Port Elizabeth, on Saturday.

After the sides failed to produce a goal in 90 minutes of regulation time and a further half an hour of extra time, the Cup final was decided in the cruellest method of the game with the Brazilians coming out on top.

Hlompo Kekana missed the second penalty of the shootout to hand Ajax the advantage which they held until their last attempt of the five with a 3-2 lead. Abbubaker Mobara stepped up to take the penalty to win the cup for his side but smashed his attempt into the crossbar.

Thabo Ntethe made it 3-3 with the fifth attempt for Sundowns to send the shootout into sudden death.

Franklin Cale missed from the spot in sudden death for Ajax, and Bongani Zungu promptly drove the ball home for Sundowns to take the title.

Earlier, in the sixth minute of the contest, Nathan Paulse caught Sundowns on the counter and the early pass for the Ajax forward allowed him to run into the box unmarked, but his shot was whipped across the face of goal as the Brazilians were let off the hook.

Sundowns began to threaten and had a great chance to open the scoring with just under 20 minutes gone in the encounter. A Teko Modise free kick into the box was met by Zungu who rose above the Ajax defence but could not find the target with his free header.

After a number of shots in succession for Sundowns in the 24th minute, the final attempt fell to Khama Billiat on the edge of the box but he could not keep the ball down as his effort sailed into the crowd.

Kekana had the next good chance from a free-kick just outside the box in the 28th minute, but his powerful dipping shot was just over the crossbar.

Two minutes before half-time, Paulse had another golden opportunity to open the scoring when he reeled off a first time shot running into the area but Sundowns defender captain Alje Schut deflected the ball wide with an outstretched leg.

Six minutes after the interval, Sundowns had the best chance of the afternoon with Billiat firing in a low piledriver but Anssie Jaakkola produced a fine save to keep the sides level.

Ancelotti defends under-fire Bale

Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti defended Gareth Bale, saying he had paid the price for the poor form of his team mates.

|||

Madrid - Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti has defended under-fire midfielder Gareth Bale, saying the Welshman had paid the price for the poor form of his team mates, but had improved his link-up play in a difficult season.

Bale has scored just three goals in his last 19 games and has faced criticism for not being a team player during a campaign where Real are set to miss out on all major trophies.

He has not made the same impact as he did in his first year in Spain where he scored important goals to help Real win the Champions League and the King's Cup.

Real's Champions League elimination by Juventus on Wednesday and their King's Cup defeat to Atletico Madrid in January have ensured their slender hopes of silverware lie in La Liga where they trail Barcelona by four points with two matches remaining.

They play Espanyol away on Sunday at the same time as Barcelona face a difficult away clash against Atletico Madrid.

Bale was whistled by the home crowd against Juventus after he failed to convert his second-half chances.

He has struggled to adapt to the typical Spanish short passing game, while his pace and direct running have proved less effective in La Liga than in the Premier League.

Ancelotti, however, feels that he has done well considering that he has been hampered by injuries.

“He has had good moments when the team was in form and suffered when the team has played badly,” the Italian coach told a news conference.

“It is difficult to evaluate the season of a player who has had injuries but while there have been a few small issues he has progressed and become more used to playing with the team.”

There are question marks over Ancelotti's future following a difficult campaign.

“I am disappointed because I think that the team deserved to play another final,” he said. “We have to respect what happens on the pitch and that another team will play the (Champions League) final.

“We have battled and we are still fighting in La Liga. We were close to reaching the final of the Champions League and it is during a season when we have had a lot of injuries.”

London - Southampton's Senegal forward Sadio Mane scored the fastest Premier League hat-trick as he broke a 20-year-old record to help them lead 5-1 at home to Aston Villa by halftime on Saturday.

His treble was timed at two minutes and 56 seconds breaking broke Robbie Fowler's record of four minutes and 33 seconds against Arsenal on 28 August 1994.

It also broke Scot Graham Leggat's record for the quickest English top flight hat-trick scored in exactly three minutes for Fulham in a club record 10-1 win over Ipswich Town in 1963.

Mane struck in the 13th, 14th and 16th minutes at St Mary's, which is the earliest a player has scored three goals in a Premier League game, beating the 22 minutes registered by Dwight Yorke for Blackburn Rovers in 2003.

Mane is the third Southampton player to score a Premier League hat-trick after James Beattie and Matt Le Tissier.

Southampton striker Shane Long grabbed a double in the 26th and 38th minutes to put Southampton 5-0 ahead.

Christian Benteke did pull a goal back in added time before the break prompting the travelling Villa fans to sing: “We're going to win 6-5!”

The fastest hat-trick in Football League history was scored in two minutes and 20 seconds by Bournemouth's James Hayter against Wrexham in 2004 after he came on as a substitute with his team leading 3-0 and six minutes left.

His parents missed his hat-trick as they had to leave early to get the last ferry back to the Isle of Wight.

LVG moves for keeper, De Gea exit looms

David de Gea’s Man United future is in serious doubt - with Louis van Gaal revealing he has lined up replacements.

London - David de Gea’s Manchester United future is in serious doubt - with Louis van Gaal revealing he has lined up replacements and reports in Spain claiming the goalkeeper has agreed to move to Real Madrid.

The United manager has warned the 24-year-old, who is stalling over a new contract, that he has identified players to step in should he move to the La Liga giants.

And with reports in Spain stating that De Gea has agreed terms on a deal with Real worth over £3.6million a year, the writing would appear to be on the wall.

Spanish newspaper Marca claim an agreement was reached months ago and say only United’s insistence on being paid £29m for the Madrid-born star, who is out of contract next season, is holding up the move.

‘We want him to sign but he has to want to stay here at Manchester United,’ Van Gaal said ahead of tomorrow’s visit of Arsenal. ‘I don’t know why he has not made the decision.’

United have been linked with moves for Tottenham’s Hugo Lloris and Stoke’s Asmir Begovic.

And Van Gaal pointed out that they would be prepared should De Gea, who signed for £17.8m from Atletico Madrid in 2011, head to the Bernabeu.

‘We know who already shall be the next goalkeeper,’ the Dutchman said. ‘We have a list of goalkeepers who can replace him because we have to be organised also, not only for that position but every position.We want him to stay so hopefully he shall sign.’

Meanwhile, Spurs have told United that 30-goal striker Harry Kane is not for sale.

The White Hart Lane club will not entertain any offers for their prize asset after his sensational breakthrough season.

Tottenham view Kane, 21, as an integral part of their future on and off the pitch.

Indeed, Kane’s commercial worth to the club was underlined yesterday as he featured in the club’s promotional material for the launch of their new kit.

Van Gaal has also been linked with Real’s out-of-form Welsh winger Gareth Bale, who could be used in an exchange deal for De Gea. But he would not be moved on his targets.

‘I see that I buy everyone in the world but it is not like that,’ he said.

United, in fourth place, will be without Wayne Rooney (dead leg), Luke Shaw (facial injury), Michael Carrick (calf) and Rafael (rib), while Jonny Evans is an injury doubt for the visit of the third-placed Gunners.

On Thursday executive vice- chairman Ed Woodward said he was ‘delighted’ with Van Gaal’s performance after the club all but secured their target of Champions League football for next season.

‘It’s not bad I think,’ Van Gaal agreed.
