Guardiola rules out City move

Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola shot down swirling rumours of a possible move to Manchester City next season.

|||

Munich - Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola shot down swirling rumours of a possible move to Manchester City next season, saying he would see out his contract at the German champions.

“Boys, I have said it 200 million times that I have one more year on my contract here,” the Spaniard told reporters ahead of Wednesday's Champions League semi-final, return leg against Barcelona in Munich.

“Next season I will be here and that's all there is to it,” said Guardiola, who won the domestic double last season and the league title in the current campaign.

But he has not enjoyed the European success he was hired to achieve back in 2013 and a 3-0 Champions League first leg defeat at Barcelona could spell the end of their run this season.

A 1-0 loss to Augsburg in the league on Saturday further fanned speculation about the Spaniard's stay in Munich after what was the fourth straight loss for Bayern in all competitions, something that had not happened since 1991.

Several media had reported on Sunday of a pre-agreement with City. – Reuters

Arsenal will challenge next season

Arsène Wenger believes his Arsenal side have shown their potential for a Premier League title challenge in the second half of the season.

|||

Arsène Wenger believes his Arsenal side have shown their potential for a Premier League title challenge in the second half of the season after conceding the initiative to Chelsea in the opening months.

The Gunners' first league defeat of the campaign was to Chelsea in October, but they had already lost ground to the Blues by drawing four of their first six games. A late-season rally - nine wins in a 10-match unbeaten streak - has not been enough for them to catch Chelsea, but Arsenal will still aim to extend that run against Swansea City.

“There are many turning points,” Wenger said. “One of them was that we had some players back and defensively we were much stronger in the second part of the season than the first part. We still have room for improvement there. Maybe we have more stability and more balance in the team.

“We were not consistent enough. After eight games we were 11 points behind Chelsea. If we win our game in hand [against Sunderland on 20 May] we are 10 points behind Chelsea. That means in the first eight games we lost our championship and that's what we have to address next season and start strong.

“We feel we have made progress in our consistency, our quality and our stability.That is what we want to continue and I believe it is important to finish as close as possible to Chelsea and think we are ready to challenge next season.”

Swansea manager Garry Monk also sees Arsenal as likely challengers for the title next year. He said: “I expect they'll be a little bit disappointed they didn't start the season the way they're finishing it. Maybe they could have been a little bit closer to Chelsea. But they've had a fantastic season. There's a talented squad there, with real depth as well, especially the attacking options they have.

“People will talk about certain aspects of their play and what they need to improve but the squad Arsène is building is going to be a force in the next couple of years. They seem young enough and good enough players to make that next step and looking from the outside they seem a squad who could develop into title contenders.”

Arsenal need to win to keep the pressure on Manchester City in the race for second but Swansea head to North London in confident mood. Back-to-back wins over Newcastle United and Stoke City have consolidated eighth place and secured a club Premier League record of 53 points.

“You always expect them to be strong and their home record has been exceptional,” Monk said. “It's an arena which can be extremely tough and we expect that, but it's also one where we've done well in the past.

“I want my players to go to these type of arenas and play these sort of teams; it's a chance for them to express themselves. We've proven this season we can handle those situations and let's hope we can do it again.” – The Independent

Gerrard has a dig at Chelsea fans

Steven Gerrard received a standing ovation from the home fans when he was substituted at Stamford Bridge.

|||

Steven Gerrard received a standing ovation from the home fans when he was substituted at Stamford Bridge, but said the gesture did not make up for being mercilessly taunted by the Chelsea support throughout the 1-1 draw.

The Liverpool captain slipped over in the game against Chelsea at Anfield last season - an act that all but ended Liverpool's title challenge - and yesterday the home fans reminded him of the fact repeatedly.

Gerrard, who will leave Anfield this summer to join Los Angeles Galaxy, was substituted with 11 minutes to go and was applauded off. However, he did not thank the Chelsea fans afterwards.

“I think Chelsea fans have showed respect for me for a couple of seconds but they have slaughtered me all game,” Gerrard said, before adding acerbically: “It was nice of them to turn up for once.”

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho led the standing ovation and afterwards told the Liverpool captain that Chelsea's “negative song” about him was a sign of respect.

Mourinho has been making clear for days just how much he respects Gerrard and last night, after the 1-1 draw, he did it again. He said he was “very happy” that the Chelsea fans had applauded Gerrard off and that their taunting him showed how much they admired him.

“The negative song only shows respect, nothing other than respect,” Mourinho said. “It is like a negative song, to a 'dear enemy'. The applause was special. Stamford Bridge was special. Steve gets that for almost two decades, every week when he plays at Anfield. To get that in an away stadium is a fantastic way for him to feel. Probably every club, every stadium respects him a lot.”

Mourinho insisted there was no chance, though, of him finally signing Gerrard on loan next January. “He was clear, it would be impossible for him to score a goal against Liverpool. He was very clear.”

After an even game at Stamford Bridge, Mourinho was pleased with Chelsea's performance, especially that of 19-year-old Ruben Loftus-Cheek, making his first Premier League start.

“I think he did well,” said Mourinho, who replaced the teenager with Nemanja Matic after an hour. “But I also think it's better for him to play 60 minutes and leave the pitch in good condition than stay on when it would have been difficult for him to cope with the speed of the game in the second half. But a fantastic experience for him, to feel the intensity and the speed of the game.”

There was more promise for next season as Mourinho voiced his hope that Oscar could develop as much next year as Eden Hazard has this campaign. “Fundamental will be to keep my players and try and get the best out of them,” Mourinho said about his plans for the summer. “People like Oscar, who has never had a pre-season in his life, playing Olympic games or tournaments. Now he is not going to the Copa America and I have a feeling, next year, he could have the same evolution as Hazard had this season.”

Brendan Rodgers spoke of the importance of finding the “right acquisitions” for Liverpool this summer, especially with Gerrard leaving. “He is irreplaceable really, but we need to find a solution one way or the other,” Rodgers said. The manager praised his team, though, for an “outstanding” second-half performance and said that Cesc Fabregas should have been sent off in the first minute after a high, late tackle on Raheem Sterling.

“Out of control, diving, stretching. A poor challenge,” said Rodgers.– The Independent

Truce marks Glazers’ 10th anniversary

An uneasy truce between Manchester United fans and the Glazer family who run the club is in place as the 10th anniversary of their ownership approaches.

|||

London - An uneasy truce between Manchester United fans and the Glazer family who run the famous Premier League club is in place as the 10th anniversary of their ownership approaches.

When the Glazers bought United it sparked a fans' revolt but the Americans are now reluctantly tolerated, a situation that will be helped by a return to the Champions League next season amid progress under Dutch coach Louis van Gaal.

Much of the deep hostility from the supporters towards the Glazers remains, although the fact that the club have generally enjoyed success since their arrival has quelled some of the more vehement opposition amongst the huge fanbase.

The owners have done themselves no harm this weekend, letting it be known they have no intention of selling the naming rights to the club's home ground at Old Trafford.

There has been speculation during the season that the Glazers would raise about 20 million pounds ($30.92 million) a year by allowing England's second-biggest stadium to be renamed.

While there has been no official club statement, British media reported on Sunday that this was now unlikely to happen.

If that is the case the Glazers will get the full backing of the United fans for once and more cordial relations with the supporters will continue at least for the time being.

A decade after their controversial leveraged takeover of United, which burdened the club with a debt of 525 million pounds in May 2005, the owners still maintain a low profile.

Many United fans vociferously opposed the takeover and a section formed their own semi-professional club, FC United of Manchester, playing in the sixth tier of English soccer.

The 'gold-and-green' campaign, with fans wearing scarves in the colours of the club's 19th century founding fathers, drew more than 150,000 members with some vowing never to return to Old Trafford while the Glazers were in charge.

Many still believe, rightly or wrongly, that the Glazers were using United's wealth to boost their U.S. finances at the expense of the club's appetite for success.

A recently published book “The Glazer Gatekeeper” by their former spokesman Tehsin Nayani gives the Glazers' side of the story, despite an opening sentence that reads: “The Glazers may not be the ideal owners of Manchester United.”

In the following 300-plus pages he attempts to argue why they are.

Even the Glazers' most die-hard opponents acknowledge that United have won silverware under their ownership, including five Premier League titles and a Champions League crown in 2008.

While they failed to keep Cristiano Ronaldo at Old Trafford after the Portugal forward joined Real Madrid in 2009 for a world record fee of 80 million pounds, the Glazers silenced some of their critics last summer when they splashed the cash for new coach Louis Van Gaal's dip in the transfer market.

They are also reportedly planning to make more investments for next season and started early by securing the 25 million-pound signing of highly-rated 21-year-old Dutch international striker Memphis Depay from PSV Eindhoven.

United's quarterly accounts, published in February, showed the debt was down to 380 million pounds and results due to be released on Thursday will provide the latest figures. – Reuters

‘Chelsea competed with dignity’

It was not a vintage Chelsea performance but manager Jose Mourinho said his newly-crowned champions competed for the dignity of the Premier League in their 1-1 draw against Liverpool.

|||

London - It was not a vintage Chelsea performance but manager Jose Mourinho said his newly-crowned champions competed for the dignity of the Premier League in their 1-1 draw against Liverpool on Sunday.

The visitors welcomed Chelsea on to the pitch with a guard of honour at Stamford Bridge and the hosts responded by taking the lead after five minutes when John Terry headed in from a corner.

Visiting captain Steven Gerrard capitalised on some slack defending to nod home the equaliser just before halftime but neither side could make the decisive breakthrough in the second half.

“It was a proper game. It was not a pre-season game. Both teams were trying to get a result. Were Chelsea at their top? No. But were we at a level where we show we want to compete? Clearly,” Mourinho told the BBC.

“It's normal, people like Jon Mikel Obi, Loic Remy, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, many weeks without playing, in the second half they felt it.

“The second half was a bit difficult for us but we competed for what we have to compete for, the dignity of the Premier League.”

Gerrard, teased by Chelsea fans about his slip last season which allowed Demba Ba to score at Anfield and undermined their title hopes, got a standing ovation when he was substituted as he prepares to join LA Galaxy at the end of the season.

Mourinho was delighted Gerrard, a player he tried to sign for Chelsea, Inter Milan and Real Madrid, was given a warm send off by the home crowd.

“I'm so happy with that. The negative song Chelsea fans sing for him is respect for an old, dear enemy that fought so much against us in every competition,” the Portuguese coach said.

“After that, the standing applause is amazing. To get it at Anfield he gets it week in week out, year after year but away from home it shows a lot.

“Moments like that and when Crystal Palace come here and fight and win, Burnley fight like lions, us losing at home to a League One team in Bradford, moments like that make this country special.”

Chelsea have 84 points from 36 games, 11 more than second-placed Manchester City, and visit West Bromwich Albion and host Sunderland in their final two matches of the season. – Reuters

QPR relegated after mauling

It’s relegation from the Premier League for QPR after a crushing 6-0 defeat to Manchester City on Sunday.

|||

London – Queens Park Rangers were relegated from the Premier League on Sunday after Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero scored a hat-trick in a crushing 6-0 defeat that sent them down after just one season in the top flight.

QPR needed to win their remaining three fixtures to stand any chance of survival but defeat at the Etihad Stadium means the west London club are nine points adrift of 17th-placed Newcastle United with two games remaining.

Second place City have now booked their place in next season’s Champions League.

QPR, who will join Burnley in the Championship, have won just seven away points this season and were behind in the fourth minute when Aguero dinked over Robert Green before Aleksander Kolarov’s free kick doubled their lead in the 32nd minute.

Aguero completed his hat-trick with further goals in the 50th and 65th minutes before James Milner added a fifth four minutes later and David Silva completed the rout with three minutes remaining.

QPR announced massive losses in March and could face heavy fines, points deductions and transfer embargoes under the Football League’s Financial Fair Play rules.

City have 73 points from 36 games and trail Champions Chelsea by 10 points ahead of the Blues’ fixture against Liverpool at Stamford Bridge later on Sunday. – Reuters

Beckford lob ends Preston’s jinx

Preston’s Jermaine Beckford scored with a 60m lob to round off a 3-0 win over Chesterfield on Sunday.

|||

London – Preston North End’s cc

Preston, haunted by nine successive playoff failures, completed a 4-0 aggregate success with a comfortable victory in the second leg at Deepdale.

The final flourish came in the 87th minute when former Everton striker Beckford spotted Chesterfield keeper Joe Murphy off his line and took aim from inside his own half to send a shot arcing perfectly into the net.

Beckford, who netted the only goal in the first leg, also opened the scoring in the return when he rolled a defender to fire home in the 38th minute.

Joe Garner added a second goal from the penalty spot in the second half after Murphy rushed off his line to bring down Daniel Johnson.

Preston, who had exited at the semi-final stage of the playoffs six times since 1989, will face the winners of Sheffield United’s clash with Swindon Town in the final on May 24 for a place in the Championship (second tier). – Reuters

PFA sticks to its guns on Israel

The PFA remains reluctant to drop its call for a vote at the Fifa Congress to suspend Israel from international football.

|||

Zurich – The Palestinian FA (PFA) will not drop its proposal for a vote at the Fifa Congress to suspend Israel from international football although it will continue to pursue dialogue, its president Jibril Rajoub told Reuters on Sunday.

Rajoub met his Israeli counterpart Ofer Eini and Fifa president Sepp Blatter at the headquarters of soccer’s governing body in the latest attempt to end the impasse between the two sides.

The PFA accuses Israel of hampering its activities and restricting the movement of players between the Gaza Strip and the Israeli-occupied West Bank. Israel cites security concerns for the restrictions it imposes.

“Both member associations agreed to pursue the dialogue,” said Fifa in a statement.

“(Fifa President Blatter) confirmed that he will travel to Israel and Palestine to meet their respective FA Presidents and Heads of State ahead of the Fifa Congress.”

For the Palestinian proposal to pass, it would need the approval of 75 percent of Fifa’s 209 member associations at the annual congress in Zurich on May 29.

As well as restrictions on movement, the PFA has cited issues surrounding the curbs Israel places on the import into the Palestinian territories of sports equipment and visits by foreign teams and individuals.

Fifahas been trying to find a solution to the Palestinian complaints for more than two years.

“The proposal (to suspend Israel) will remain on the agenda,” Rajoub said in a telephone interview.

“A dialogue is not a solution, the solution is that the Israelis have to come and recognise our rights to develop the game according to the statutes of Fifa.

“We told the Israeli FA that they have enough time to come to the Congress with a proposal to end our suffering. We recognise their association and the right of their footballers to enjoy the game and we want to enjoy the same rights.

“I want to end the suffering of Palestine football rather than cause suffering to others,” he said. “I don’t wish the suffering of the Palestine footballers on anybody, including Israel.

“I shook hands with them (the Israeli delegation), they are my neighbours,” added Rajoub. “But I wish they would join me and fight against discrimination.”

If Fifa were to suspend Israel, it would bar all its teams and clubs from competing in international competitions such as the Champions League and Euro 2016 qualifiers.

Israel is a member of UEFA and Palestine is part of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). – Reuters

Draw ends Carver’s toughest week

For Magpies manager John Carver, Saturday’s Albion draw marked an end to the toughest week of his life.

|||

London – Newcastle United manager John Carver said Saturday’s 1-1 draw with West Bromwich Albion had ended “probably the toughest week of my life” and that a huge point would be crucial in their battle to avoid relegation.

The draw gave Newcastle their first Premier League point since February and halted a run of eight successive defeats which had dragged them from mid-table security into a relegation battle.

After a toothless 3-0 defeat by resurgent Leicester City last weekend Carver suggested his defender Mike Williamson had got himself sent off deliberately.

Derby County manager Steve McClaren reportedly rejected the chance to join the free-falling club for their final three games of the season and Carver held crisis talk with the board to discuss his future.

Having fallen behind to Victor Anichebe’s goal on Saturday Newcastle found themselves temporarily in the relegation zone but Ayoze Perez’s equaliser lifted them back to 17th place.

Newcastle are still in a precarious position, one place and two points above the drop, but Carver said the mental boost of halting their losing run would give his side renewed optimism.

“That could be huge,” Carver, who was heartened by post- match applause from Newcastle’s disgruntled fans, told reporters.

“It was important to stop the slide and that run of defeats.

“There has been a lot said in the last week after the Leicester game and rightly so, but there was a response from the players and definitely from the fans.

“One thing I would say is when you see a performance like that - and hopefully it’s not too late - is that the players do care and they do want to stay in the Premier League.

“It was a great reaction from the fans and it affected the reaction of the players. They showed great character and determination to come back.

“From the first whistle to the last there was one team trying to win the game and one team trying to stay in the game and wait for a set play.”

Houston, do we have a lift off?

Houston Hills is a key player for the All Stars to pull off their shot at a play-off spot.

|||

Cape Town – All Stars have had a fantastic debut season in the National First Division. Not only are they the only Mother City club in with a shot at a promotion play-off spot, but they have also provided a platform for a few players to realise their full potential.

Today is the final day of the NFD campaign – and, as All Stars look to defeat Jomo Cosmos at Athlone Stadium this afternoon (kick-off 3pm) and, at the same time, hope other results go their way, attacking midfielder Houston Hills can reflect on a fruitful season at the Gugulethu-based club.

Like Amigo Memela and Zaid Patel – two other players who have come to prominence at All Stars after struggling at their previous clubs – Hills has blossomed at the Cape club under the tutelage of coach Boebie Solomons.

It has been a long and difficult journey for Hills to find a club where he is able to smile. He has been disappointed so many times. Just when it would seem as if everything would come together and he would go on to make a success of his chosen career as a professional footballer, his world would come crashing down.

Now 27 years of age, the player with the exotic name (Houston Hills is the name of a suburb in North Carolina, USA) is from Westbury, the sprawling Joburg township which was also home to current Everton star Steven Pienaar and Ajax Cape Town winger Keagan Dolly. As a junior, Hills started at a community side in Westbury called, ironically, Everton, before he joined the FC AK youth academy in Roodepoort at the age of 16.

Soon after, he was promoted to the FC AK first team who, at the time, were campaigning in the First Division. By the age of 19, Hills had signed for Thanda Royal Zulu in the Premier Soccer League, making his top-flight debut against Kaizer Chiefs. He spent two seasons at Thanda, but eventually a lack of game time prompted him to leave.

He came down to the Cape in search of regular football and signed for First Division club Hanover Park in 2008.

“It was a good move,” said Hills. “I played well, scored a couple of goals and the next season I was signed by Wits. Roger de Sa (current Ajax Cape Town coach) was in charge at the time. After a short while, De Sa sent me on loan to Vasco da Gama, where I was able to do well and contribute to the team from Parow being promoted to the PSL.

“Roger then recalled me to the Wits squad after the loan period, and I was in their squad that won the Nedbank Cup final in 2010.”

But that, too, would come to an end. The Wits stint was over and Hills then moved to Mpumalanga Black Aces in 2013, where, again, he was able to make a contribution to a club attaining promotion to the PSL. After playing such a crucial role in their success, Hills renewed his contract with Aces, hoping that he had finally found a club that would appreciate his talent.

Alas, it was not to be. “Things just went bad at Aces,” said Hills. “Having achieved promotion, they changed their squad completely, brought in a lot of new players, and I was completely out of favour. It killed me… so I got my release and came down to Cape Town again, this time to join Milano (United) in the NFD.

“This, though, wasn’t a great move. I just never enjoyed myself. After Milano lost out in the promotion play-offs, I went back home to Westbury, took time off from football, sorted out my life and got my head right. It was during this time that I found religion. I was saved, and I was able to put everything into perspective and just concentrate on what I needed to do to get my career back on track.”

Hills called Solomons, soon after he was appointed head coach of All Stars, and the former Cape Town Spurs midfielder told the player to head down to the Mother City. It was to be the best decision of Hills’ career. Everything has gone right – the goals are coming, he has been in brilliant form, and, at last, he can enjoy his game to the fullest.

“The coach (Solomons) has played a big part in my performance,” said Hills. “He has given me the confidence to express myself and the belief in my ability. I’m really grateful for what All Stars and the coach have done for me this season.”

But a play-off spot is not cut-and-dried for Solomons’ troops, even if they manage to defeat second-placed Cosmos today. They will still have to hope that Black Leopards and Thanda don’t sneak in ahead of them.

As it stands, champions Golden Arrows are already promoted to the PSL, but Cosmos (50 points), Leopards (48), Thanda (47) and All Stars (47) are in a desperate race to secure second and third positions on the NFD standings and, thereby, clinch places in the play-offs.

The two NFD teams will then join the club ending second-last on the PSL in a three-way play-off, with the eventual winner assured of a place in next season’s PSL.

“The only thing we can do is focus on what we have to do,” said Hills. “We have to beat Cosmos today and then just hope other results go our way. That’s it… if we deserve to be in the play-offs, we will be there, that’s what I believe.

“I’ve been struggling with injury of late, but playing through the pain is not a problem. This is a crucial period of the season. We need the win, we are in with a chance at a play-off spot. We want to give it our best.”

Today’s NFD fixtures

Black Leopards v African Warriors; Thanda Royal Zulu v Garankuwa United; Vasco da Gama v Santos (Parow Park, 3pm); Maluti FET College v Baroka FC; Milano United v FC Cape Town (Philippi Stadium, 3pm); Royal Eagles v Witbank Spurs; Cape Town All Stars v Jomo Cosmos (Athlone Stadium, 3pm); Highlands Park v Golden Arrows

Injured Kroos remains hopeful

Real’s Toni Kroos is hoping an injury sustained on Saturday doesn’t sideline him for the Juventus clash.

|||

Madrid – Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos has hinted an injury sustained in Saturday’s La Liga draw against Valencia is unlikely to sideline him for the holders’ Champions League game against Juventus on Wednesday.

Real need to overturn a 2-1 deficit when they host the Italian side for the semi-final, second leg at the Bernabeu and Germany international Kroos will be key to their hopes of exerting control in the central areas.

He had to be replaced by Asier Illarramendi in the 25th minute on Saturday and coach Carlo Ancelotti told a news conference Kroos had suffered a blow to the hip but probably not a muscle injury.

“Thank you for your kind messages,” Kroos wrote on his Twitter feed on Sunday.

“I’ve just been through the examination. Don’t worry,” he added. “Let’s focus on Wednesday.”

Real are in danger of ending the season without defending either their European crown or securing a first La Liga title since 2012.

The draw with Valencia left them four points behind leaders Barcelona with two games left after their arch-rivals won 2-0 at home to Real Sociedad earlier on Saturday. Reuters

Gareth won’t Bale despite woes

Gareth Bale is suffering at Real but he has no plans to quit the club, the Welsh winger’s agent says.

|||

Madrid – Gareth Bale is suffering at Real Madrid because his teammates are not passing him the ball enough but he has no plans to quit the club, according to the Wales winger’s agent.

Bale’s troubled second season in Spain hit a new low with a poor performance in last week’ Champions League defeat at Juventus and he again failed to spark in Saturday’s 2-2 La Liga draw at home to Valencia.

He has been whistled by disgruntled fans at the Bernabeu, a startling turnaround for a player who scored in the finals of the Champions League and the King’s Cup last term.

Real broke the transfer record to buy the 25-year-old but he has lately been struggling to live up to expectations in a season partly disrupted by injury.

“Real have to work with Gareth and pass the ball to him more,” Bale’s agent Jonathan Barnett was quoted as saying in Britain’s Sunday Telegraph newspaper.

“Give him more of the ball and let him show everybody what he’s good at,” Barnett added.

“He’s going to be the best player at Real Madrid when his team mates work with him and help him.”

Real are in danger of ending the season without defending their Champions League crown or securing a first La Liga title since 2012.

Eliminated from the King’s Cup by Atletico Madrid in January, Real lost the semi-final, first leg at Juve 2-1 and are four points behind leaders Barca in second in La Liga with two matches left.

Bale’s statistics are actually similar to last season, with 17 goals and 10 assists in 46 matches compared to 22 goals and 12 assists in 44 games in 2013-14.

However, he has been criticised for being selfish in front of goal and not contributing enough in defence.

“Most people would have been broken by this but he is determined,” Barnett said.

“He could have screamed and shouted or knocked on the manager’s office door but he doesn’t want to upset anyone.

“Every top club in the world would want to sign him but he will be at Real Madrid next season.

“There’s no way he is going anywhere in the summer. When we said he always wanted to play for Real, it was 100 percent true and he’s determined to be a success there.” – Reuters

Dallas down LA Galaxy in upset

Dallas scored twice in the last 13 minutes to come from behind and beat Galaxy 2-1 on Saturday.

|||

Los Angeles – Dallas FC scored twice in the last 13 minutes on Saturday to come from behind and beat the reigning Major League Soccer (MLS) champions Los Angeles Galaxy 2-1.

Argentine-born playmaker Mauro Diaz set up both goals for Dallas, the first by Blas Perez then the winner, in the 86th minute, by last season’s MLS rookie of the year, Tesho Akindele.

The win lifted Dallas FC to a share of first place in the Western Conference standings, level on 20 points with Vancouver, while the Galaxy slipped to sixth place after their third away loss of the season.

“We didn’t do well at the end of the game, obviously the last 15 minutes, and that’s my responsibility,” LA Galaxy coach Bruce Arena told reporters.

“When a team plays that poorly on the road, they’re not well-coached.”

Vancouver beat a 10-man Philadelphia 3-0 to edge ahead of Dallas on goal difference. Pedro Morales and Octavio Rivero both scored in the first half then substitute Darren Mattocks added a third after Philadelphia defender Richie Marquez was sent off for a reckless challenge.

New England gave up two late goals, including the equaliser in the last minute, to draw 2-2 with Orlando, missing the chance to snatch the outright lead in the Eastern Conference standings.

New England led 2-0 with just 15 minutes to go at the Citrus Bowl before things suddenly went awry. Orlando pulled one back in the 75th minute then equalised in the last minute when French-born defender Aurelien Collin headed in off the bar.

DC United, level on points with New England, also squandered the opportunity to take the outright lead, drawing 1-1 with Sporting Kansas City.

DC’s Costa Rican international Jairo Arrieta gave the home side the lead but Sporting KC levelled on the stroke of halftime through Englishman Dominic Dwyer.

Argentine midfielder Diego Valeri, playing his first match since undergoing knee surgery in October, scored the winner for Portland in a 2-1 victory over Montreal.

The US national team captain Clint Dempsey scored twice for the Seattle Sounders but his brace was not enough to stop the Columbus Crew from registering a 3-2 win.

Kei Kamara banged in two goals for Columbus to remain level with Dempsey at the top of the MLS goalscoring this season with seven goals each. – Reuters

Real setback for title hopes

Real’s hopes of overhauling La Liga leaders Barca suffered a blow with a draw to Valencia on Saturday.

|||

Madrid – Real Madrid’s hopes of overhauling La Liga leaders Barcelona suffered a stinging blow when they were held to a 2-2 draw at home to Valencia on Saturday to slip four points behind their arch rivals with two games left.

Fourth-placed Valencia raced into a surprise 2-0 lead at the Bernabeu through goals from Paco Alcacer and Javi Fuego before Real forward Cristiano Ronaldo had a penalty saved by goalkeeper Diego Alves on the stroke of half-time.

Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Javier Hernandez had earlier struck efforts against the frame of the goal and Real’s Germany midfielder Toni Kroos had to be replaced by Asier Illarramendi because of a suspected muscle injury.

Pepe pulled a goal back for Real with a header from a corner 11 minutes into the second half and Isco levelled with a superb curling shot six minutes from time but Valencia held on in an action-packed finale.

It was Real’s second consecutive game without a win after the holders went down 2-1 at Juventus in Tuesday’s Champions League semi-final, first leg, with the return to come at the Bernabeu on Wednesday.

Barca have 90 points after they won 2-0 at home to Real Sociedad earlier on Saturday, with Real on 86 and champions Atletico Madrid 10 points further adrift in third ahead of their game at Levante on Sunday. – Reuters

Man U close in on Champions spot

United took a step closer to making a return to Europe's top league with their win over Palace on Saturday.

London – Manchester United took a big step towards a return to their once-permanent place among Europe's aristocrats when they beat a resilient Crystal Palace 2-1 on Saturday to close in on a Champions League place.

The victory ended a run of three successive Premier League defeats and put United seven points clear of Liverpool, the only team who can pip them to fourth spot in the Premier League.

To do that Liverpool must win their last three matches, starting at champions Chelsea on Sunday, and hope United take only one point from games against third-placed Arsenal and relegation-threatened Hull City.

The odds now firmly favour United’s return to the Champions League after missing out this season and that would represent a solid achievement for Dutch coach Louis van Gaal in his first season in charge.

United finished seventh last season under caretaker-manager Ryan Giggs following the sacking of David Moyes.

“I don’t think we have played our best match but we fought to the end and it was important to win it. Its the right step towards qualification for the Champions League” Van Gaal told Sky Sports.

United went ahead with a 19th-minute penalty from Juan Mata after Scott Dann handled an Ashley Young cross and although Jason Puncheon equalised with a deflected 57th-minute free kick, Marouane Fellaini secured victory with a 78th-minute header, again from a Young cross.

Palace, whose place in next season’s Premier League was guaranteed by earlier results, played with the spirit of adventure that has been their hallmark since Alan Pardew took over as manager in January.

They were only denied a better result by another excellent performance from United goalkeeper David De Gea who made several superb saves.

England skipper Wayne Rooney limped off at halftime and United defender Luke Shaw was taken to hospital after getting an elbow in the face but Van Gaal did not think his injury was too serious.

“Luke went to the hospital but I already have good news because he shall come to the airport and come home on the plane. It’s not so bad otherwise you cannot fly,” the Dutchman said. – Reuters
