PFA sticks to its guns on Israel

The PFA remains reluctant to drop its call for a vote at the Fifa Congress to suspend Israel from international football.

|||

Zurich – The Palestinian FA (PFA) will not drop its proposal for a vote at the Fifa Congress to suspend Israel from international football although it will continue to pursue dialogue, its president Jibril Rajoub told Reuters on Sunday.

Rajoub met his Israeli counterpart Ofer Eini and Fifa president Sepp Blatter at the headquarters of soccer’s governing body in the latest attempt to end the impasse between the two sides.

The PFA accuses Israel of hampering its activities and restricting the movement of players between the Gaza Strip and the Israeli-occupied West Bank. Israel cites security concerns for the restrictions it imposes.

“Both member associations agreed to pursue the dialogue,” said Fifa in a statement.

“(Fifa President Blatter) confirmed that he will travel to Israel and Palestine to meet their respective FA Presidents and Heads of State ahead of the Fifa Congress.”

For the Palestinian proposal to pass, it would need the approval of 75 percent of Fifa’s 209 member associations at the annual congress in Zurich on May 29.

As well as restrictions on movement, the PFA has cited issues surrounding the curbs Israel places on the import into the Palestinian territories of sports equipment and visits by foreign teams and individuals.

Fifahas been trying to find a solution to the Palestinian complaints for more than two years.

“The proposal (to suspend Israel) will remain on the agenda,” Rajoub said in a telephone interview.

“A dialogue is not a solution, the solution is that the Israelis have to come and recognise our rights to develop the game according to the statutes of Fifa.

“We told the Israeli FA that they have enough time to come to the Congress with a proposal to end our suffering. We recognise their association and the right of their footballers to enjoy the game and we want to enjoy the same rights.

“I want to end the suffering of Palestine football rather than cause suffering to others,” he said. “I don’t wish the suffering of the Palestine footballers on anybody, including Israel.

“I shook hands with them (the Israeli delegation), they are my neighbours,” added Rajoub. “But I wish they would join me and fight against discrimination.”

If Fifa were to suspend Israel, it would bar all its teams and clubs from competing in international competitions such as the Champions League and Euro 2016 qualifiers.

Israel is a member of UEFA and Palestine is part of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). – Reuters

Draw ends Carver’s toughest week

For Magpies manager John Carver, Saturday’s Albion draw marked an end to the toughest week of his life.

|||

London – Newcastle United manager John Carver said Saturday’s 1-1 draw with West Bromwich Albion had ended “probably the toughest week of my life” and that a huge point would be crucial in their battle to avoid relegation.

The draw gave Newcastle their first Premier League point since February and halted a run of eight successive defeats which had dragged them from mid-table security into a relegation battle.

After a toothless 3-0 defeat by resurgent Leicester City last weekend Carver suggested his defender Mike Williamson had got himself sent off deliberately.

Derby County manager Steve McClaren reportedly rejected the chance to join the free-falling club for their final three games of the season and Carver held crisis talk with the board to discuss his future.

Having fallen behind to Victor Anichebe’s goal on Saturday Newcastle found themselves temporarily in the relegation zone but Ayoze Perez’s equaliser lifted them back to 17th place.

Newcastle are still in a precarious position, one place and two points above the drop, but Carver said the mental boost of halting their losing run would give his side renewed optimism.

“That could be huge,” Carver, who was heartened by post- match applause from Newcastle’s disgruntled fans, told reporters.

“It was important to stop the slide and that run of defeats.

“There has been a lot said in the last week after the Leicester game and rightly so, but there was a response from the players and definitely from the fans.

“One thing I would say is when you see a performance like that - and hopefully it’s not too late - is that the players do care and they do want to stay in the Premier League.

“It was a great reaction from the fans and it affected the reaction of the players. They showed great character and determination to come back.

“From the first whistle to the last there was one team trying to win the game and one team trying to stay in the game and wait for a set play.”

Houston, do we have a lift off?

Houston Hills is a key player for the All Stars to pull off their shot at a play-off spot.

|||

Cape Town – All Stars have had a fantastic debut season in the National First Division. Not only are they the only Mother City club in with a shot at a promotion play-off spot, but they have also provided a platform for a few players to realise their full potential.

Today is the final day of the NFD campaign – and, as All Stars look to defeat Jomo Cosmos at Athlone Stadium this afternoon (kick-off 3pm) and, at the same time, hope other results go their way, attacking midfielder Houston Hills can reflect on a fruitful season at the Gugulethu-based club.

Like Amigo Memela and Zaid Patel – two other players who have come to prominence at All Stars after struggling at their previous clubs – Hills has blossomed at the Cape club under the tutelage of coach Boebie Solomons.

It has been a long and difficult journey for Hills to find a club where he is able to smile. He has been disappointed so many times. Just when it would seem as if everything would come together and he would go on to make a success of his chosen career as a professional footballer, his world would come crashing down.

Now 27 years of age, the player with the exotic name (Houston Hills is the name of a suburb in North Carolina, USA) is from Westbury, the sprawling Joburg township which was also home to current Everton star Steven Pienaar and Ajax Cape Town winger Keagan Dolly. As a junior, Hills started at a community side in Westbury called, ironically, Everton, before he joined the FC AK youth academy in Roodepoort at the age of 16.

Soon after, he was promoted to the FC AK first team who, at the time, were campaigning in the First Division. By the age of 19, Hills had signed for Thanda Royal Zulu in the Premier Soccer League, making his top-flight debut against Kaizer Chiefs. He spent two seasons at Thanda, but eventually a lack of game time prompted him to leave.

He came down to the Cape in search of regular football and signed for First Division club Hanover Park in 2008.

“It was a good move,” said Hills. “I played well, scored a couple of goals and the next season I was signed by Wits. Roger de Sa (current Ajax Cape Town coach) was in charge at the time. After a short while, De Sa sent me on loan to Vasco da Gama, where I was able to do well and contribute to the team from Parow being promoted to the PSL.

“Roger then recalled me to the Wits squad after the loan period, and I was in their squad that won the Nedbank Cup final in 2010.”

But that, too, would come to an end. The Wits stint was over and Hills then moved to Mpumalanga Black Aces in 2013, where, again, he was able to make a contribution to a club attaining promotion to the PSL. After playing such a crucial role in their success, Hills renewed his contract with Aces, hoping that he had finally found a club that would appreciate his talent.

Alas, it was not to be. “Things just went bad at Aces,” said Hills. “Having achieved promotion, they changed their squad completely, brought in a lot of new players, and I was completely out of favour. It killed me… so I got my release and came down to Cape Town again, this time to join Milano (United) in the NFD.

“This, though, wasn’t a great move. I just never enjoyed myself. After Milano lost out in the promotion play-offs, I went back home to Westbury, took time off from football, sorted out my life and got my head right. It was during this time that I found religion. I was saved, and I was able to put everything into perspective and just concentrate on what I needed to do to get my career back on track.”

Hills called Solomons, soon after he was appointed head coach of All Stars, and the former Cape Town Spurs midfielder told the player to head down to the Mother City. It was to be the best decision of Hills’ career. Everything has gone right – the goals are coming, he has been in brilliant form, and, at last, he can enjoy his game to the fullest.

“The coach (Solomons) has played a big part in my performance,” said Hills. “He has given me the confidence to express myself and the belief in my ability. I’m really grateful for what All Stars and the coach have done for me this season.”

But a play-off spot is not cut-and-dried for Solomons’ troops, even if they manage to defeat second-placed Cosmos today. They will still have to hope that Black Leopards and Thanda don’t sneak in ahead of them.

As it stands, champions Golden Arrows are already promoted to the PSL, but Cosmos (50 points), Leopards (48), Thanda (47) and All Stars (47) are in a desperate race to secure second and third positions on the NFD standings and, thereby, clinch places in the play-offs.

The two NFD teams will then join the club ending second-last on the PSL in a three-way play-off, with the eventual winner assured of a place in next season’s PSL.

“The only thing we can do is focus on what we have to do,” said Hills. “We have to beat Cosmos today and then just hope other results go our way. That’s it… if we deserve to be in the play-offs, we will be there, that’s what I believe.

“I’ve been struggling with injury of late, but playing through the pain is not a problem. This is a crucial period of the season. We need the win, we are in with a chance at a play-off spot. We want to give it our best.”

Today’s NFD fixtures

Black Leopards v African Warriors; Thanda Royal Zulu v Garankuwa United; Vasco da Gama v Santos (Parow Park, 3pm); Maluti FET College v Baroka FC; Milano United v FC Cape Town (Philippi Stadium, 3pm); Royal Eagles v Witbank Spurs; Cape Town All Stars v Jomo Cosmos (Athlone Stadium, 3pm); Highlands Park v Golden Arrows

Injured Kroos remains hopeful

Real’s Toni Kroos is hoping an injury sustained on Saturday doesn’t sideline him for the Juventus clash.

|||

Madrid – Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos has hinted an injury sustained in Saturday’s La Liga draw against Valencia is unlikely to sideline him for the holders’ Champions League game against Juventus on Wednesday.

Real need to overturn a 2-1 deficit when they host the Italian side for the semi-final, second leg at the Bernabeu and Germany international Kroos will be key to their hopes of exerting control in the central areas.

He had to be replaced by Asier Illarramendi in the 25th minute on Saturday and coach Carlo Ancelotti told a news conference Kroos had suffered a blow to the hip but probably not a muscle injury.

“Thank you for your kind messages,” Kroos wrote on his Twitter feed on Sunday.

“I’ve just been through the examination. Don’t worry,” he added. “Let’s focus on Wednesday.”

Real are in danger of ending the season without defending either their European crown or securing a first La Liga title since 2012.

The draw with Valencia left them four points behind leaders Barcelona with two games left after their arch-rivals won 2-0 at home to Real Sociedad earlier on Saturday. Reuters

Gareth won’t Bale despite woes

Gareth Bale is suffering at Real but he has no plans to quit the club, the Welsh winger’s agent says.

|||

Madrid – Gareth Bale is suffering at Real Madrid because his teammates are not passing him the ball enough but he has no plans to quit the club, according to the Wales winger’s agent.

Bale’s troubled second season in Spain hit a new low with a poor performance in last week’ Champions League defeat at Juventus and he again failed to spark in Saturday’s 2-2 La Liga draw at home to Valencia.

He has been whistled by disgruntled fans at the Bernabeu, a startling turnaround for a player who scored in the finals of the Champions League and the King’s Cup last term.

Real broke the transfer record to buy the 25-year-old but he has lately been struggling to live up to expectations in a season partly disrupted by injury.

“Real have to work with Gareth and pass the ball to him more,” Bale’s agent Jonathan Barnett was quoted as saying in Britain’s Sunday Telegraph newspaper.

“Give him more of the ball and let him show everybody what he’s good at,” Barnett added.

“He’s going to be the best player at Real Madrid when his team mates work with him and help him.”

Real are in danger of ending the season without defending their Champions League crown or securing a first La Liga title since 2012.

Eliminated from the King’s Cup by Atletico Madrid in January, Real lost the semi-final, first leg at Juve 2-1 and are four points behind leaders Barca in second in La Liga with two matches left.

Bale’s statistics are actually similar to last season, with 17 goals and 10 assists in 46 matches compared to 22 goals and 12 assists in 44 games in 2013-14.

However, he has been criticised for being selfish in front of goal and not contributing enough in defence.

“Most people would have been broken by this but he is determined,” Barnett said.

“He could have screamed and shouted or knocked on the manager’s office door but he doesn’t want to upset anyone.

“Every top club in the world would want to sign him but he will be at Real Madrid next season.

“There’s no way he is going anywhere in the summer. When we said he always wanted to play for Real, it was 100 percent true and he’s determined to be a success there.” – Reuters

Dallas down LA Galaxy in upset

Dallas scored twice in the last 13 minutes to come from behind and beat Galaxy 2-1 on Saturday.

|||

Los Angeles – Dallas FC scored twice in the last 13 minutes on Saturday to come from behind and beat the reigning Major League Soccer (MLS) champions Los Angeles Galaxy 2-1.

Argentine-born playmaker Mauro Diaz set up both goals for Dallas, the first by Blas Perez then the winner, in the 86th minute, by last season’s MLS rookie of the year, Tesho Akindele.

The win lifted Dallas FC to a share of first place in the Western Conference standings, level on 20 points with Vancouver, while the Galaxy slipped to sixth place after their third away loss of the season.

“We didn’t do well at the end of the game, obviously the last 15 minutes, and that’s my responsibility,” LA Galaxy coach Bruce Arena told reporters.

“When a team plays that poorly on the road, they’re not well-coached.”

Vancouver beat a 10-man Philadelphia 3-0 to edge ahead of Dallas on goal difference. Pedro Morales and Octavio Rivero both scored in the first half then substitute Darren Mattocks added a third after Philadelphia defender Richie Marquez was sent off for a reckless challenge.

New England gave up two late goals, including the equaliser in the last minute, to draw 2-2 with Orlando, missing the chance to snatch the outright lead in the Eastern Conference standings.

New England led 2-0 with just 15 minutes to go at the Citrus Bowl before things suddenly went awry. Orlando pulled one back in the 75th minute then equalised in the last minute when French-born defender Aurelien Collin headed in off the bar.

DC United, level on points with New England, also squandered the opportunity to take the outright lead, drawing 1-1 with Sporting Kansas City.

DC’s Costa Rican international Jairo Arrieta gave the home side the lead but Sporting KC levelled on the stroke of halftime through Englishman Dominic Dwyer.

Argentine midfielder Diego Valeri, playing his first match since undergoing knee surgery in October, scored the winner for Portland in a 2-1 victory over Montreal.

The US national team captain Clint Dempsey scored twice for the Seattle Sounders but his brace was not enough to stop the Columbus Crew from registering a 3-2 win.

Kei Kamara banged in two goals for Columbus to remain level with Dempsey at the top of the MLS goalscoring this season with seven goals each. – Reuters

Real setback for title hopes

Real’s hopes of overhauling La Liga leaders Barca suffered a blow with a draw to Valencia on Saturday.

|||

Madrid – Real Madrid’s hopes of overhauling La Liga leaders Barcelona suffered a stinging blow when they were held to a 2-2 draw at home to Valencia on Saturday to slip four points behind their arch rivals with two games left.

Fourth-placed Valencia raced into a surprise 2-0 lead at the Bernabeu through goals from Paco Alcacer and Javi Fuego before Real forward Cristiano Ronaldo had a penalty saved by goalkeeper Diego Alves on the stroke of half-time.

Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Javier Hernandez had earlier struck efforts against the frame of the goal and Real’s Germany midfielder Toni Kroos had to be replaced by Asier Illarramendi because of a suspected muscle injury.

Pepe pulled a goal back for Real with a header from a corner 11 minutes into the second half and Isco levelled with a superb curling shot six minutes from time but Valencia held on in an action-packed finale.

It was Real’s second consecutive game without a win after the holders went down 2-1 at Juventus in Tuesday’s Champions League semi-final, first leg, with the return to come at the Bernabeu on Wednesday.

Barca have 90 points after they won 2-0 at home to Real Sociedad earlier on Saturday, with Real on 86 and champions Atletico Madrid 10 points further adrift in third ahead of their game at Levante on Sunday. – Reuters

Man U close in on Champions spot

United took a step closer to making a return to Europe's top league with their win over Palace on Saturday.

|||

London – Manchester United took a big step towards a return to their once-permanent place among Europe's aristocrats when they beat a resilient Crystal Palace 2-1 on Saturday to close in on a Champions League place.

The victory ended a run of three successive Premier League defeats and put United seven points clear of Liverpool, the only team who can pip them to fourth spot in the Premier League.

To do that Liverpool must win their last three matches, starting at champions Chelsea on Sunday, and hope United take only one point from games against third-placed Arsenal and relegation-threatened Hull City.

The odds now firmly favour United’s return to the Champions League after missing out this season and that would represent a solid achievement for Dutch coach Louis van Gaal in his first season in charge.

United finished seventh last season under caretaker-manager Ryan Giggs following the sacking of David Moyes.

“I don’t think we have played our best match but we fought to the end and it was important to win it. Its the right step towards qualification for the Champions League” Van Gaal told Sky Sports.

United went ahead with a 19th-minute penalty from Juan Mata after Scott Dann handled an Ashley Young cross and although Jason Puncheon equalised with a deflected 57th-minute free kick, Marouane Fellaini secured victory with a 78th-minute header, again from a Young cross.

Palace, whose place in next season’s Premier League was guaranteed by earlier results, played with the spirit of adventure that has been their hallmark since Alan Pardew took over as manager in January.

They were only denied a better result by another excellent performance from United goalkeeper David De Gea who made several superb saves.

England skipper Wayne Rooney limped off at halftime and United defender Luke Shaw was taken to hospital after getting an elbow in the face but Van Gaal did not think his injury was too serious.

“Luke went to the hospital but I already have good news because he shall come to the airport and come home on the plane. It’s not so bad otherwise you cannot fly,” the Dutchman said. – Reuters

Chiefs fan killed after clash with cops

A Kaizer Chiefs supporter was shot dead during a confrontation with police as thousands of fans invaded the pitch at the end of Chiefs' victory over Chippa United.

|||

Port Elizabeth - A supporter was shot dead during a confrontation with South African police as thousands of fans invaded the pitch at the end of champions Kaizer Chiefs' 2-0 victory over Chippa United that closed their league campaign on Saturday.

The incident at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, one of the venues used during the World Cup in 2010, is being investigated but police spokesman Johan Rheeder was quoted as saying the unidentified man had tried to disarm an officer and died at the scene.

“The man tried to take the policeman's gun and during the scuffle the gun went off and the person was shot,” Rheeder told South Africa's Herald newspaper.

The incident was also confirmed by the CEO of the Premier Soccer League, Braam de Villiers.

Thousands of supporters took to the pitch at the final whistle as the notoriously ill-equipped security at South African domestic football matches could do little to stem the charge.

Kaizer Chiefs were crowned league champions for a record 12th time on April 22, but were forced by the league authorities to wait until the final day of the season to lift the trophy.

That created much anticipation for Saturday's fixture against minnows Chippa United, and the 46,000-seater venue was a sell-out. – Reuters

Amazulu relegated from PSL

AmaZulu were relegated from the Premiership following their 2-1 loss to Maritzburg United in their match at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

|||

Durban – AmaZulu were relegated from the Premiership following their 2-1 loss to Maritzburg United in their match at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday.

Needing to match the score of fellow relegation-threatened side Moroka Swallows, who won on the final day of the season, AmaZulu’s loss meant they fell to bottom of the table upon the completion of the season and were automatically relegated to the National First Division.

In the seventh minute Maritzburg began to threaten as Mohammed Anas reeled off a strike from long range but his effort was just wide.

Some woeful defending allowed Maritzburg to take the lead in the eighth minute of the match. Maritzburg were gifted possession near the halfway line, before Deolin Mekoa received the final ball ahead of the defence and drove home his left-footed strike from inside the box to take a 1-0 lead with the game still in its infancy.

A minute after the break, AmaZulu wasted a huge opportunity to level the scores. Bongi Ntuli found himself ahead of the Maritzburg defence, but could not find the target with just Shuaib Walters in goal to beat.

AmaZulu were denied an equaliser in the 67th by a fine reaction save from Walters. Bornwell Mwape headed the ball goalwards from close range but Walters was able to stick out a hand to deflect the ball out for a corner after what seemed like a certain goal for the men in green.

Maritzburg United were reduced to 10 men in the 72nd minute as Kwanda Mngonyama received his second yellow card for a challenge and was given his marching orders.

AmaZulu equalised in the 73rd minute as Tapelo Nyongo produced a clinical header from close range after Marc van Heerden whipped the ball into the box from a free kick to make it 1-1.

In the 80th minute, Bongani Ndulula had the chance to give his side the lead, but with just the keeper to beat running into the box lofted his poor attempt way over the goal.

Maritzburg ended any hopes AmaZulu had of staying in the Premiership in the 88th minute. Mohau Mokate was on hand to grab the winner for his side. – ANA

Burnley relegated, despite win

Burnley won plenty of praise for the way they played, but not enough matches to stay in the Premier League and their relegation after one season in the top flight came as no real surprise.

|||

Burnley won plenty of praise for the way they played, but not enough matches to stay in the Premier League and their relegation after one season in the top flight came as no real surprise.

Even though they won 1-0 at Hull City for a first victory and a first goal in six matches since they beat outgoing champions Manchester City 1-0 on March 14, Burnley occupied one of the bottom four positions for the entire season.

Their return to the Championship was confirmed by Newcastle United's 1-1 draw with West Bromwich Albion which left Burnley seven points from the safety zone with two games left.

Manager Sean Dyche and his men though have won plaudits for the battling spirit they have shown since winning promotion last year and although they were always favourites to make an immediate return to the Championship, they go down with their reputation intact and their heads held high.

“We have been competitive in virtually every game this season, but when we've needed to take our chances we haven't quite done that,” manager Dyche told Sky Sports after their fate was sealed.

“Our players have quality, but it's delivering it at the key moments and that's where we've fallen a little short over the season.”

Saturday's match-winner Danny Ings told the BBC: “I thought we showed unbelievable fight and spirit today.

“The lads have fought until the end - and I'm extremely proud of them. Now we are going to play the last two games with pride and hope to finish strongly.”

Ultimately Burnley's season had more “moral victories” than actual ones, and a lack of financial muscle and experienced top flight players made their task a tough one.

But, as Dyche explained: “We are a change from the norm. People normally throw money at it and hope for the best, but we have had to develop a team to play in this league.

“We have all learnt from this experience and the club is in a far better place than it was. It hasn't kept us in the division but there are great signs that we can move on beyond this point.”

Burnley's fans also appear to be behind Dyche and his men and are no doubt dreaming of a swift return.

After cheering on their team for virtually the whole match, they gave them a standing ovation at the end.

They may be down and out now, but there's every sign they could bounce back before too long. – Reuters

|||

London - Sunderland climbed out of the Premier League's bottom three and applied heavy pressure to the teams fighting for survival around them with a gritty 2-0 victory at Everton on Saturday.

Danny Graham put Sunderland ahead after 54 minutes when the striker was in the right place to deflect Jordi Gomez's shot past Tim Howard and record his first goal for the club he joined over two years ago.

Everton pushed for an equaliser but Sunderland made sure of the three points when Jermain Defoe turned in Adam Johnson's deflected shot with five minutes remaining.

Sunderland climbed to 14th on 36 points from 35 matches and have a game in hand on all the teams around them. Everton remained 11th with 44 points from 36 games.

Bottom side Burnley travel to Hull City later on Saturday needing three points and results to go their way to avoid relegation. Newcastle United host West Bromwich Albion trying to end an eight-game losing streak. –Reuters

City will get Toure a cake this year

Manuel Pellegrini will ensure Yaya Toure receives a birthday cake when he turns 32, after last year’s fiasco.

|||

Manuel Pellegrini will ensure Yaya Toure receives a birthday cake when he turns 32 next Wednesday, after the midfielder was reportedly offended that his club failed to light the candles for him last year.

The City boss is keen to avoid the mistakes of 12 months ago, but refused to be dragged into a war of words with Toure’s agent Dimitri Seluk, who has claimed his client is ‘90 per cent’ certain to leave the Etihad this summer.

‘Are you sure his birthday is next week?’ joked Pellegrini. ‘We will have to see what the best thing to do is because I think it it important to learn from your mistakes in the past.

‘We will talk about next season in the right moment. I have never answered to Yaya’s agent so I will not do it now.

‘Yaya has a contract here for two years more so in we are only thinking about the best way to finish the season then we will see what happens.

Pellegrini, meanwhile, insists the Premier League’s leading scorer Sergio Aguero can become City’s version of Lionel Messi and help his club catch up with Barcelona.

Aguero, who has scored 22 league goals despite City’s woes, has been one of his club’s few success stories this season and his boss expects Aguero to be even more impressive next term, matching the sort of form shown by his countryman at Barca.

Pellegrini said: ‘It’s important for Kun to improve every year, to play all the games. I hope he will be as important here as those players are at Barca.’ – Daily Mail

D-Day for PSL relegation battle

One of Moroka Swallows, AmaZulu and Chippa United will be relegated from PSL when the final round of games are done.

|||

The Premier Soccer League (PSL) is calling it Super Saturday, but for either Moroka Swallows or AmaZulu, and to some extent Chippa United, there’ll be nothing super about this afternoon should they fail to survive relegation from the elite league.

The smart money is on Swallows going down for the first time in their history, given that they need not only to beat Bloemfontein Celtic, but also hope for favourable results in other matches to stay afloat.

And with their coach literally having left it all up to his players following Wednesday night’s last-minute defeat at Ajax Cape Town, there’s every indication that Swallows will walk onto the pitch at the Dobsonville Stadium a deflated lot.

Speaking after the 2-1 loss that sent them to the bottom spot after AmaZulu’s victory at the University of Pretoria, Swallows’ coach Craig Rosslee lamented his team’s failure to defend high balls against what he felt was much shorter opposition.

And then he uttered the words that may well spell Swallows’ death-knell: “What I am going to do is irrelevant. (Of course) I will do what any coach will do, but the players now have to find the strength within themselves to get the result.”

Granted a coach can only do so much to motivate his team. But since taking over at Swallows, Rosslee’s language hasn’t inspired confidence. He made similar pronouncements after the draw with SuperSport United and the one at the University of Pretoria – essentially kicking the ball into the players’ court.

Yet when a club is in the kind of doldrums that Swallows were in when he took over, what the players need to hear is that their coach believes he is the man to save them.

Talk like the one Steve Barker has been churning out since he joined an Usuthu side that was, for all intents and purposes, relegated as they trailed by no less than 15 points at the halfway stage.

Barker was at it after the come-from-behind win over AmaTuks as he spoke of how he believes his team have it in them to beat a Maritzburg United side chasing a top-eight spot.

“I’ve been telling them we have matches from which we can save our status and I told them ‘let’s go down fighting’. Now it’s so nice to hear them singing,” he said in an interview at the Tuks Stadium as his players celebrated a victory that took them off the bottom in song.

Could it perhaps be that difference of attitude from the coaches that makes a difference in the two clubs’ fortunes this afternoon. Barker’s ‘can do’ outlook has already done wonders to ensure that AmaZulu are still in with a chance of avoiding the drop going into the last matchday of the season.

In turn, Rosslee looks to have already washed his hands of a Swallows’ demise. In some of his post-match interviews, he spoke of how poor the team spirit has been all season, even before he took over. All that will count for nothing this afternoon, though, with both sides needing to win and hoping Chippa get nothing from their clash with Kaizer Chiefs.

And that will be super – for whoever manages to avoid the chop.

FIXTURES: Today (all 3pm): Mamelodi Sundowns v University of Pretoria, Lucas Moripe Stadium; Moroka Swallows v Bloemfontein Celtic, Dobsonville Stadium; Ajax Cape Town v Orlando Pirates, Cape Town Stadium; Free State Stars v Mpumalanga Black Aces, Goble Park; AmaZulu v Maritzburg United, Moses Mabhida Stadium; Bidvest Wits v Platinum Stars, Bidvest Stadium; Polokwane City v SuperSport United, Old Peter Mokaba Stadium; Chippa United v Kaizer Chiefs, Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium - Saturday Star

United ‘forced’ to sign Depay - LVG

Louis Van Gaal says the signing of Memphis Depay is only the start of Manchester United’s summer transfer business.

|||

Louis van Gaal says he was forced into signing Memphis Depay to stop the player from joining Paris Saint-Germain, but warned it is only the start of Manchester United’s summer transfer business.

The United manager landed the PSV Eindhoven forward, 21, for £25million, but will have a further £75m at his disposal to pursue Borussia Dortmund central defender Mats Hummels and Southampton full back Nathaniel Clyne, as well as extra cash for Real Madrid winger Gareth Bale.

When asked if he expected to conclude more business at the end of the season Van Gaal said confidently: ‘Manchester United shall always react when it is necessary.’

On Depay, he added: ‘I have been forced to sign him. I didn’t want to before the end of the season because you disturb the focus of your present group but otherwise he would have joined Paris Saint-Germain.’

Van Gaal said he intervened to prevent Depay, the Dutch league’s top scorer, from heading to France, using his close relationship with the management of PSV to set up the deal.

The Dutchman also congratulated champions Chelsea and said he was not disappointed that old friend Jose Mourinho had given his side four days off before tomorrow’s game at home to Liverpool, United’s rivals for a top-four spot.

‘I have sent him a message,’ he said. ‘It was well deserved. You cannot doubt they are the real champions.’

A number of United players are doubtful for today’s game at Crystal Palace after a virus swept through the squad. ‘We have a virus in our dressing room,’ Van Gaal said. ‘A lot of players are suffering from it and I have a little bit of pain in the throat.’

Van Gaal also confirmed Michael Carrick will not play again this season because of a calf injury. – Daily Mail
