Magical Messi saves the day again

Lionel Messi and Neymar helped Barcelona break Bayern Munich’s resistance in a Champions League thriller.

|||

Barcelona - Two late moments of Lionel Messi magic and a goal from Neymar helped Barcelona break the resistance of Bayern Munich in a pulsating 3-0 victory in their Champions League semi-final first leg at the Nou Camp on Wednesday.

After Barca had been frustrated by the brilliance of Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer for most of the match, Messi fired home after 77 minutes and then doubled the lead with a delightful chip from six metres three minutes later.

Neymar completed a resounding late burst from the hosts when he raced clear and slotted calmly home in stoppage time.

It was a disappointing evening for Bayern coach Pep Guardiola on his return to his former club.

He had warned before the game that it was impossible to stop his former prodigy Messi and it proved the case as the Argentine orchestrated Barcelona's emphatic victory that gives them a clear advantage heading into next week's second leg.

“When Messi is inspired he is unstoppable and tonight he showed his talent again,” Barcelona centre back Gerard Pique told Spanish television.

“We played a fantastic game. Defensively we were very good as they didn't have shots on target and to achieve that against a team like Bayern is amazing.”

Barca have evolved this season under Luis Enrique into a team that is no longer obsessed with maintaining possession and instead is allowing the forwards to be more creative.

Bayern had plenty of the ball in the second half but it was Barca's counter-attacks that proved decisive.

“We played okay for long periods of time but we were caught on the break three times. It's bitter, we had our chances but we lost possession, they break and that should not happen,” Bayern's Philipp Lahm told reporters.

Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben were among those sidelined in an injury crisis for Bayern, but a masked Robert Lewandowski started in attack despite fracturing his nose and jaw in his side's recent defeat by Borussia Dortmund in the German Cup.

Barcelona's first clear sight of goal came after 11 minutes when Luis Suarez scampered clear of the Bayern defence and was denied by a superb block from the feet of Neuer.

Minutes later a close range effort from Neymar was deflected wide by Rafinha.

The German champions slowly woke up and should have scored on the counter when Lewandowski slid a Thomas Mueller cross wide after 17 minutes.

Messi and Suarez were both showing delightful touches as they teased the Bayern backline while Neymar on the left side of their attacking trident found it more difficult to get into the game.

Barca continued to pass up opportunities in the second half before Messi made the breakthrough with a 20-metre drive that beat Neuer at his near post.

He then capped an excellent performance by lifting the ball expertly over Neuer for a record 77th Champions League goal and providing the pass for Neymar's crucial late third.

Ajax sign Serbian brothers AND dad

Ajax Amsterdam signed Serbia international Nemanja Gudelj from AZ Alkmaar, while also recruiting his younger brother and giving their dad a coaching job.

|||

Amsterdam - Ajax Amsterdam have signed Serbia international Nemanja Gudelj from fellow Dutch club AZ Alkmaar, while also recruiting his younger brother and giving their dad a coaching job, the club said on Wednesday.

Ajax signed Nemanja on a five-year deal and the 23-year-old midfielder is the club's first major signing in preparation for next year's Champions League.

“The new season starts early for us at the end of July with a match in the preliminary round of the Champions League, so therefore it's important that we get our lineup in order as quickly as possible,” coach Frank de Boer said on the club's website (www.ajax.nl).

“The arrival of Nemanja Gudelj is an important step in that process. We've decided we need a better physical presence in our lineup next season. Nemanja brings that and a winning mentality.”

Ajax said Nemanja's 17-year-old brother Dragisa would join their reserve side and father Nebojsa will be on the coaching staff.

Nebojsa Gudelj, 46, played in the Netherlands and coached NAC Breda for two years until he was sacked last year.

Real tops Forbes soccer teams rich list

European champions Real Madrid are the world's most valuable soccer club for a third straight year, according to a Forbes poll.

|||

Madrid, Spain - European champions Real Madrid are the world's most valuable soccer club for a third straight year, according to a Forbes poll released on Wednesday that showed the average value of the top 20 teams rose 11 percent over last year.

The Spanish club's value fell five percent to $3.26 billion but their $746 million in revenue, the highest of any sports team in the world, was enough to keep them top of the list, Forbes said in a statement.

Barcelona ($3.16 billion), Manchester United ($3.10 billion), German champions Bayern Munich ($2.35 billion) and Manchester City ($1.35 billion) rounded out the top five.

Rising television and shirt sponsorship revenue helped drive the average value of the top 20 clubs to $1.16 billion, a staggering 84 percent jump from five years ago.

Eight of the top 20 teams are from the English Premier League, which Forbes credited to both a rise in the British pound relative to the euro and US dollar and a lucrative new domestic TV deal starting from the 2016-17 season.

Serie A champions Juventus ($837 million), AC Milan ($775 million), Inter Milan ($439 million) and Napoli ($353 million) are the only Italian teams to crack the top 20 but none were higher than ninth place.

Forbes said the once-great Serie A brand has been undermined over the past decade by match-fixing scandals, antiquated stadiums, rising debts and a decline in talent on the pitch.

The 10 most valuable soccer teams (in billions):

1. Real Madrid $3.26

2. Barcelona $3.16

3. Manchester United $3.10

4. Bayern Munich $2.35

5. Manchester City $1.38

6. Chelsea $1.37

7. Arsenal $1.31

8. Liverpool $982

9. Juventus $837

10. AC Milan $775

Skrtel contract talks hits a snag

Martin Skrtel’s contract talks with Liverpool have hit a snag over a clause relating to the number of games he must play each season.

|||

Martin Skrtel’s contract talks with Liverpool have hit a snag over a clause relating to the number of games he must play each season.

The 30-year-old central defender, who is one of the top earners at the club behind Steven Gerrard and Daniel Sturridge, was thought to be close to agreeing a new three-year deal, with the option of another 12 months.

Liverpool were confident of wrapping up the contract before the end of the season, but it is understood Skrtel has to play 80 per cent of the games to qualify for his full salary and those terms have proved a stumbling block.

Liverpool, who are negotiating with a number of players over new deals, have caused considerable discord over their handling of the future of Brad Jones.

The back-up keeper is furious with the club after he was initially told that he would be given a new 12-month contract because of his positive influence in the dressing room. He was happy to stay for another year as No 2 to Simon Mignolet but can now leave for free at the end of the season.

Daniel Sturridge had surgery in New York yesterday to correct the hip problem that has ended his season.

The 25-year-old Liverpool striker has been in the United States since last week seeing specialists over an issue that has plagued him since he was injured during a 2-1 defeat to Manchester United in March.

It was hoped that rest and recuperation would correct the damage but it was decided that surgery was the best course of action to prevent any recurrence of the injury later in his career.

Sturridge now has no chance of being involved in England’s end of season internationals against Slovenia and the Republic of Ireland.

It has been a nightmare 12 months for Sturridge, who has also suffered thigh and calf problems, limiting him to just 19 appearances.

Provided there are no complications, Sturridge should be fit for pre-season, when Liverpool will embark on a tour of Australia and Malaysia. The club is also exploring the possibility of playing in Vietnam or Thailand. – Daily Mail

Chippa boss nothing but an amateur

To term the way Chippa United is being run amateurish would be an insult to the clubs campaigning in the unpaid ranks, says Matshelane Mambolo.

|||

Some clubs just should not be in the professional ranks, let alone in existence. To term the way Chippa United is being run amateurish would be an insult to the clubs campaigning in the unpaid ranks.

The latest debacle at the Chilli Boys that has seen yet another change in the technical team with Mich D’Avray stripped of the caretaker coach role he was supposed to hold until the end of the season tells the story of a club that is nothing more than a rudderless ship.

I played amateur football in my younger days and my club was run way better than the Chilli Boys are, albeit it ours was administered from the boot of a taxi.

I remember how we used to be the township’s whipping boys during our formative stages. Defeats as humiliating as 5-0 were common as we looked to gel into a unit. But in all those losses, not once did the club owner look for a new coach, as he and a couple of other fathers preserved to lead the team.

In the end we grew into a very competitive team that contested the provincial finals on a number of occasions and some of our teammates even attracted the attention of professional sides such as Orlando Pirates.

Someone should tell Chippa Mpengesi that chopping and changing coaches at the rate he is, is not going to see the Chilli Boys become giants of the game.

Why Mpengesi decided that D’Avray was no longer good enough to lead his side despite his getting four points from a possible nine just goes to confirm the man is clueless as to what coaching is all about.

Yet, perhaps, the best thing would be for the club to get relegated once again so that he goes down to the tough National First Division (NFD) where he will perhaps be taught the folly of his trigger-happy ways.

Consistency in the technical team is the cornerstone of many a successful teams, with Kaizer Chiefs’ record-points victory in this season’s championship race set on the back of Stuart Baxter’s knowledge of a team he has been in charge of for three seasons.

Few coaches can ever make a success of a club in a few matches, let alone a single season.

Coaches need time to build something solid, time to understand the players as individuals before gelling them into a cohesive unit that will put their individual abilities and unique skills to the benefit of the team.

Time Mr Mpengesi, not three matches.

And surely you would know this from your other businesses. Unless all you are is the typical South African tenderpreneur! - The Star

Jose agrees new Chelsea deal

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has verbally agreed a two-year extension to his current contract, according to reports in the British media.

|||

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has verbally agreed a two-year extension to his current contract, according to reports in the British media.

Mourinho, 52, returned to Chelsea in 2013 on a four-year contract and this season has led the club to the Premier League title – their first since 2010 – and the League Cup.

During his first spell at Stamford Bridge, between 2004 and 2007, he won two league titles, in 2005 and 2006, as well as two League Cups and one FA Cup.

Mourinho is already the best-paid manager in England, with a reported annual salary of £8.4 million ($12.75 million, 11.4 million euros), and British tabloid The Sun reported that his new deal would be worth around £10.5 million per year.

Speaking after Chelsea secured the league title with a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace on Sunday, Mourinho reiterated that he will stay at the club as long as owner Roman Abramovich wants him to remain.

“As I was saying since the beginning of the season, I stay here until Mr Abramovich wants me to stay,” said the Portuguese. “The day he tells me to go, I go.” – AFP

Arsenal need quality signings

Imagine Petr Cech, Mats Hummels, Paul Pogba and Edinson Cavani in a side already rich with the talent of Alexis Sanchez, Santi Cazorla and Mesut Ozil.

|||

When Thierry Henry urged Arsenal to sign four world-class players Jose Mourinho pretended to fall off his chair in shock.

To add such a quartet to Arsene Wenger’s lavish squad would make them ‘invincible’ once again, chortled Mourinho.

Henry, like many others who watch Arsenal, envisaged four high-end players down the spine of the team: a top-level goalkeeper, dominant centre half, strong and athletic midfielder and 25-goal-a-season striker.

Imagine stitching Petr Cech, Mats Hummels, Paul Pogba and Edinson Cavani through a side already rich with the talent of Alexis Sanchez, Santi Cazorla and Mesut Ozil.

It is akin to what Chelsea did last year with Thibaut Courtois, Nemanja Matic, Cesc Fabregas and Diego Costa.

Would it close the gap? Arsenal are cash-rich with saleable assets to boost funds but things work differently in N5 and Wenger has said how the fine form of 2015 has changed his mind about his tactics in the summer market.

CECH MATE?

Arsenal’s summer work must start in goal. This year’s upturn in form correlates directly to the moment David Ospina replaced Wojciech Szczesny as No 1. Yet the Colombian is not entirely convincing and Petr Cech is handily available.

Chelsea would prefer not to sell to such obvious rivals but Cech’s relationship with Roman Abramovich and Jose Mourinho is good and they are likely to allow him to leave if he wants to.

On the other side of this equation is Arsenal’s transfer policy. Cech (below) is 33 later this month and will be a big investment in terms of fee and wages. Blowing big money on thirty-somethings is hardly the modus operandi of Arsene Wenger.

Will he make an exception because it appears to be such an ideal fit? Sometimes it feels like the louder the clamour, the less likely Wenger is to do it.

IN DEFENCE OF PER

Even with the January addition of Gabriel Paulista, it feels as if Arsenal need more in central defence. Per Mertesacker has taken a lot of criticism this season, but he plays in a team which exposes its centre halves — unlike, for example, Chelsea.

A big-money upgrade on the 30-year-old German might appeal to fans, but Eliaquim Mangala was the hottest defender on the market last summer and it has gone badly for him at Manchester City.

Arsenal could do with strengthening at the back but even at £32million, there are certainly no guarantees.

This has always been Wenger’s mantra and his instinct will be reinforced by the emergence of teenager Hector Bellerin from the youth ranks and the rapid improvement of Nacho Monreal since Arsenal adopted a slightly more cautious style of play.

Calum Chambers, suddenly third-choice right back, may find his next chance appears in the centre.

RISE OF COQUELIN

Francis Coquelin is the key factor behind Wenger’s rethink. There was a long-standing interest in Southampton’s Morgan Schneiderlin, although this has cooled since Coquelin established his place in the team.

Wenger’s principles will deter him from playing such a pair together in central midfield even if there have been times when Arsenal seem to cry out for more physical presence in midfield.

He has faith in possession and prefers more craft to more protection — and the experiment with Cazorla deep in midfield has proved successful.

He will also be wary of losing what he has found in the second part of the season. Cazorla is 30 and Wenger might spring a surprise by prioritising an alternative to him, like Paris Saint-Germain’s Yohan Cabaye, instead of investing in someone who is a slight upgrade on Coquelin.

JACK’S BACK

Wilshere returned to action at Hull with his trademark explosion of pace in evidence. He looked in good touch after five months out, but Arsenal have changed in his absence with players cementing their places in the roles where he plays.

Coquelin provides the bite and there is no touching Sanchez, Ozil or Cazorla at the moment. Aaron Ramsey is out of position on the right but Wilshere would be equally out of position if he were to oust him. Manchester City’s interest in Wilshere appears genuine, but Arsenal value him at £40m. It is a figure which includes the usual premium for an English player, and it seems an awful lot of money for someone with such a rotten injury record. It is a fork in the road for Wilshere, now 23. He needs regular football more than anything.

GIROUD AWAKENING

Henry fuelled this one when he claimed Arsenal would not win the Barclays Premier League with Olivier Giroud up front. It is harsh on a centre forward who has missed three months of the season and still scored 18 in all competitions.

While Sanchez is prolific from the wing, this is a decent goal return. Giroud also has the physical strength to operate with his back to goal and get the best from the creative forces which swarm around him.

Shop in the next tier where Sergio Aguero and Luis Suarez reside and transfer fees are north of £50m. It is hard to imagine an English club laying down money for Radamel Falcao after this season. Wenger is much more likely to accept Giroud for what he is and search to improve options around him.

He is well stocked in these positions but if Wilshere or Theo Walcott is sold, it generates space for the likes of Lyon’s Nabil Fekir, a youngster who is right up Wenger’s street.

ALL IN THE MIND?

While Wenger is reluctant to fix what he thinks isn’t broken, there remain questions about this team that will not be answered by finishing second and winning the FA Cup.

They have yet to deliver under extended pressure, always promising more than they produce with a stylish recovery to repair a poor start or a dreadful collapse after a rampant opening to the season.

It is about maturity of character and mental strength and Arsenal could use a little more of it.

The heat will be on next season to challenge for the title — another reason to start the summer by paying whatever it takes to get a proven winner like Cech into the building.– Daily Mail

Juve close to rejoining Europe’s elite

uventus's win over Real Madrid has strengthened their conviction that they are good enough to rejoin European football's elite.

|||

Turin, Italy - Juventus's win over Real Madrid has strengthened their conviction that they are good enough to rejoin European football's elite after years of watching the Champions League final stages from the sidelines.

Once regarded as one of the continent's biggest and most powerful clubs, the twice European champions have had to fight their way back to the top following the Calciopoli match-fixing scandal which saw them stripped of two Serie A titles and relegated.

Their life has been further complicated by the steady decline of Serie A, where dwindling budgets means that clubs are no longer able to attract the world's top players.

Boosted by the opening of their own stadium in 2011, however, Juventus believe that, by investing wisely, they can once again compete alongside the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona.

They have already re-established themselves as the dominant force in Italian football and last Saturday wrapped up a fourth successive Serie A title with four matches to spare.

“We wanted to prove to ourselves that we can play at this level and face the European champions on level terms,” said goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon

The 37-year-old is the only survivor from the Juventus side which beat Real Madrid 4-3 on aggregate in their last semi-final appearance in 2003, having stayed at the club even when they played in Serie B in 2006/7.

Juventus were regarded as relative lightweights in the semi-final draw which also featured Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

They spent around 42 million euros in last year's July-August transfer window, just over half of the amount Real Madrid splashed out on Colombia forward James Rodriguez alone.

But they have spent wisely over the last few years, plucking playmaker Andrea Pirlo from a dead end at AC Milan and rescuing Carlos Tevez from a difficult period at Manchester City, in addition to investing in younger players such as Alvaro Morata.

“Regardless of whether we get to the final, we have the basis for the future with lads who play with personality,” said coach Massimiliano Allegri, praising newcomers Stefano Sturaro, Roberto Pereyra and Morata.

Juve's optimism was a far cry from two years ago, when they were outclassed by Bayern Munich in a 4-0 aggregate defeat in the quarter-finals.

Antonio Conte, their coach at the time, launched an impassioned criticism of Italian football, saying it would be years before a Serie A team could win the Champions League again.

But Tuesday's win has left them tantalisingly close to Berlin, and with the possibility that Paul Pogba, the jewel in Juve's crown, could be set for a return after injury in next week's second leg.

“We need to recognise how important this result is,” said Allegri. “We've played good football this season and above all I'd say we showed signs we are superior (to Real).

“I think if we want to make the final, we've got to deliver a masterpiece in Madrid. We've laid the foundations”. – Reuters

Chelsea offers Mourinho new deal

Chelsea and Jose Mourinho are ready to conclude talks over a new contract with a view to keeping him in charge at Stamford Bridge until 2019.

|||

Chelsea and Jose Mourinho are ready to conclude talks over a new contract with a view to keeping him in charge at Stamford Bridge until 2019.

Mourinho’s current deal, thought to be worth £12.5million a year, expires in two years but there is a will from both sides to swiftly agree a two-year extension with improved terms. The manager will be back in his office at the training ground today after two days off following the club’s first Barclays Premier League title triumph in five years.

Chelsea hope contract negotiations can be finalised quickly before they focus on the summer transfer market.

Barcelona striker Pedro Rodriguez has emerged as a possible target as Mourinho attempts to strengthen his squad and build a dynasty at Stamford Bridge. Since returning to London from Real Madrid two years ago, he has insisted that he no longer felt the urge to club-hop in pursuit of personal ambition.

Instead, he came in legacy mode, keen to create something to compare with what Sir Alex Ferguson did at Manchester United.

Mourinho said it would be ‘impossible’ for him to match Ferguson’s 13 Premier League titles, but he is determined to achieve more at Stamford Bridge.

‘My next move will be if and when Chelsea decide it is time,’ the 52-year-old said earlier this year, and Roman Abramovich, a visible presence during the run-in, appears delighted.

Transfer business seems set to revolve around signing one or two strikers, a defender and a reserve goalkeeper, with Petr Cech expected to leave after 11 years.

Chelsea have declared an interest in Barcelona’s Pedro, having been made aware of his availability earlier this year, and they also admire Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Greizmann.

Mourinho is keen on Getafe’s 28-year-old goalkeeper Vicente Guaita (right) as back-up to Thibaut Courtois, although an English goalkeeper would help them with the quota regulations.

Rafael Varane remains a top defensive target if he can be prised out of Real Madrid but the Chelsea manager, aware that Branislav Ivanovic can operate in central defence, may opt for another full back.

Real left back Fabio Coentrao is in the frame again, with Filipe Luis set to leave Stamford Bridge, probably for a return to Atletico.

Chelsea face competition from Mainz for Japan forward Yoshinori Muto. FC Tokyo announced last month they were in negotiations with Chelsea over Muto’s sale. However, the 22-year-old believes he would gain more game time in the Bundesliga and is willing to snub Chelsea and discuss a £4m move to Germany.

Mainz management are expected to arrive in Japan next week to negotiate directly with Muto.

Chelsea’s players do not report back until tomorrow to start preparations for the game at home to Liverpool on Sunday.

Mourinho knows the strain this campaign has put on a smallish squad and is planning to give them another four days off next week before they play at West Bromwich on Monday week.

Oscar is out of the final three games. The Brazil midfielder damaged a thigh muscle in training last week and will not take part in the Copa America in June. Filipe Luis and Willian have been selected by Brazil boss Dunga but not Ramires, who has a kidney problem. – Daily Mail

Messi is unstoppable - Guardiola

Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola says there is no way of stopping Barcelona's Lionel Messi in his present form ahead of their Champions League semi-final clash.

|||

Barcelona - Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola says there is no way of stopping Barcelona's Lionel Messi in his present form ahead of their Champions League semi-final clash.

In his former role as Barca boss, Guardiola frequently described Messi as the best player in the world.

He visited the Nou Camp as a spectator to watch his former club take apart Manchester City in the last 16 and was pictured in the stands shaking his head in disbelief as Messi wove his magic.

He now has the opportunity to pitch his Bayern side against the club where he is still idolised for what he achieved as both a player and coach.

If he is to emerge a winner at the Nou Camp, he says his side will have to find other ways to beat Barca than trying to cut out the threat of Messi.

“You don't stop Messi, in this form, no,” Guardiola told a news conference in Barcelona on Tuesday.

“In the last few months he has been unstoppable. He is too good. Maybe you can try different tactics like getting close to him, making it difficult for him to get the ball, put three players on him but against talent of this size then you cannot defend against it. We will have to look at other ways to win the game.”

The Argentine has scored 51 goals in all competitions this season and is part of a formidable attacking trident with Luis Suarez and Neymar. They have notched up 108 goals between them.

Guardiola also feels it would be futile to try and beat Barcelona at their own possession-based game.

“No team has beaten Barcelona for possession. It has always been like that,” said the Bayern coach.

“We will do what I think is necessary though and we will see who is in (the final in) Berlin next week.

“It is difficult to find weaknesses in this Barca team which has so much talent but we will try and make the most of our virtues. Barca have talent and they know how to play together.”

While Guardiola admits it is likely to be an emotional occasion, he is clear in his mind about what he needs to do.

“It is great to be here and it is impossible not to think of the memories. I knew that if I trained other big teams I would come here with them but I am not here for people to pay homage but to take Bayern to the final,” he said. – Reuters

Sturridge hip surgery successful

Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge has had successful surgery on a hip problem that effectively ended his season, he said on social media.

Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge has had successful surgery on a hip problem that effectively ended his season, he said on social media.

The 25-year-old England international has been sidelined by hip and thigh injuries and has not played since the FA Cup quarter-final win over Blackburn Rovers on April 8.

Sturridge's season ended once Liverpool decided to send him to the United States for an assessment of the injuries that have seen him miss most of the campaign.

After having the surgery in New York, Sturridge will now start a recovery programme to get fit for next season.

“Just want to let the world know I've had a successful operation on my hip today and I want to thank God for allowing that to be possible,” Sturridge wrote on Instagram.

He started the first three games this season, scoring the winner in the 2-1 victory over Southampton on the opening day, but did not play from the end of August to late January.

Sturridge has only played 18 games in this campaign, scoring five goals, compared to 33 appearances last season and 24 goals.

Liverpool still harbour faint hopes of a top-four Premier League finish and a place in next season's Champions League. They are four points behind fourth-placed Manchester United with three games left. – Reuters

United hoping for Jones boost

Manchester United could have defender Phil Jones back for the final three games of their season as they try to secure a top-four finish in the Premier League.

|||

London - Manchester United could have defender Phil Jones back for the final three games of their season as they try to secure a top-four finish in the Premier League.

The versatile England international has been out since mid-April with an ankle injury but played for United's under-21s on Monday and came through unscathed.

After three consecutive league defeats in which they failed to score, the return of Jones would be a boost for United who are four points clear of fifth-placed Liverpool.

They face Crystal Palace away on Saturday, then Arsenal at home and finish the season at Hull City.

“(As a team) we have got a long way to go as there are still three games coming up, three massive games, and we have got to approach it in the right way. I'm sure we can do that and cement that top-four finish,” Jones told the club's website.

“I'm happy to play in the Under-21s and get some fitness. I feel I'm ready to go again and hopefully I can make the squad on Saturday. Hopefully, I'll recover on Tuesday, then train on Wednesday and Thursday, and see how it goes.” – Reuters

Coloccini apologises for Newcastle fiasco

Newcastle United captain Fabricio Coloccini has written an open letter of apology to fans for the club's woeful form.

|||

Newcastle United captain Fabricio Coloccini has written an open letter of apology to fans for the club's woeful form that has left them battling to retain their Premier League status.

A run of eight successive league defeats has left Newcastle two points above the relegation zone, with three matches remaining of what has turned into a nightmare run-in.

“On behalf of the squad we would like to apologise for the moment we are going through. Needless to say this is not anything intentional,” Argentina central defender Coloccini wrote on the club's website (www.nufc.co.uk) on Tuesday.

“The time we have left to turn around this situation is short but after the end of the season we will try to learn from the mistakes we made so that we don't have to go through this again.

“This is as painful for us as it is for you, because when this team comes on to the pitch we do so with the intention of winning and to defend not just the colours of this club, not just our shirt, but also to represent thousands of fans, the whole city.”

Newcastle's 3-0 home defeat by Leicester City on Saturday, in which they had two players sent off, has provoked an outbreak of soul-searching at the north east club.

On Monday, a club statement said there had been two days of “frank discussions” involving under-fire manager John Carver and senior players who, along with the board, were “focused” and “determined” that the club retain their Premier League status.

Carver came in for heavy criticism from the media in the wake of the Leicester defeat for suggesting Newcastle defender Mike Williamson had got himself red-carded deliberately.

Coloccini said it was now time for everyone at the club to put past problems aside and called on supporters to get behind the team for the remaining fixtures.

The Magpies host West Bromwich Albion on Saturday before finishing the season with games at Queens Park Rangers and home to West Ham United.

“Players and staff have come together in order to leave all past problems aside and to focus 100 percent on the three 'cup finals' that we have left,” said Coloccini.

“I would like to make a call to all fans today to also leave aside all differences, all different opinions, anything that divides us as people who love this club.

“On Saturday, please come to St James' Park, create a great atmosphere, support the team more than ever, because at the end of the day what matters the most here is Newcastle United Football Club.” – Reuters

McCarthy unharmed during robbery

Three gunmen stormed a barber’s shop in Johannesburg and targeted soccer star Benni McCarthy, said his agent.

|||

Johannesburg - South Africa's record goal-scorer Benni McCarthy was robbed at gunpoint on Tuesday while having a haircut in Johannesburg, his agent said.

Three gunmen stormed a barber's shop in Johannesburg's Melrose suburb, robbing the 37-year-old of his wedding ring, watch and other valuables. He was not injured.

McCarthy's agent Percy Adams said the robbers targeted just the striker - who helped Portugal's Porto to win the 2004 Champions League under Jose Mourinho - in a packed salon.

The robbers ignored nine other patrons in the hairdressers.

“They didn't even touch other people, they didn't want money, nothing, they just went for him, took what they got from him and then left,” Adams told Talk Radio 702.

McCarthy is post-apartheid South Africa's leading scorer with 31 goals, including eight at the 1998 Africa Cup of Nations in Burkina Faso where Bafana Bafana finished runners-up.

He went on to play in Europe including Portugal, Spain and England with Blackburn and West Ham.

He is currently studying for a Uefa coaching licence with Scottish club Hibernian.

Several South African sporting stars have been victims of crime in the past year, including Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa, shot dead during a suspected robbery last year.

Tevez penalty stuns Real Madrid

Turin, Italy - Juventus striker Carlos Tevez smashed home a second-half penalty as the hosts stunned holders Real Madrid with a 2-1 win in an absorbing Champions League semi-final, first leg on Tuesday.

The irrepressible Argentine, playing some of the best football of his career, won the spot kick just before the hour when he was upended by Dani Carvajal on a breakaway and tucked it away to give Juve the edge after a pulsating, open game.

The home side's Alvaro Morata scored against his old club, although he declined to celebrate, in the ninth minute but Cristiano Ronaldo headed the equaliser for Real in the 27th.

Although Juventus are regarded as one of the most powerful clubs in Europe, Serie A's recent decline means they have been unable to keep up financially with the continent's elite and were regarded as relative lightweights among the semi-finalists.

They were given a painful reminder of the gap two years ago when Bayern Munich beat them 4-0 on aggregate in the quarter-finals but Tuesday's win suggests they are back near the top.

Giorgio Chiellini, booked for a crunching tackle in stoppage time, symbolised Juve's determination by playing the last few minutes with a bandage around his head after suffering a cut.

Real began shakily and played well in patches though Sergio Ramos, once again moved up to midfield, looked uncomfortable, at one point spraying a cross-field pass aimlessly into touch, and Welshman Gareth Bale was subdued on his return from injury.

“We made more mistakes than usual, not just Sergio, but at the back we had more difficulties because Juve put us under a lot of pressure but Sergio did a good job as he did in the past games,” said Real coach Carlo Ancelotti.

Tevez had a hand in the opening goal when his shot towards the far corner was saved by Iker Casillas but went straight to Morata who tapped home.

Real regained their composure and equalised when James Rodriguez cleverly flicked a bouncing ball over a defender for Ronaldo to head home at the far post.

Ronaldo's goal meant the Portuguese regained the lead from Lionel Messi as the Champions League's all-time leading scorer with 76 goals, although the Argentine is in action for Barcelona against Bayern Munich in the second semi-final on Wednesday.

The game could have turned out differently but Real forward James Rodriguez wasted a glorious chance when he headed against the bar from point-blank range before the break.

Real fell behind again after an attack broke down.

The ball was cleared to Morata who sent Tevez charging away and the Argentine's run ended in the Real penalty area where he was bundled over by Carvajal.

Tevez got up to beat Casillas from the spot with a shot down the middle.

The game continued to swing from end to end and substitute Fernando Llorente missed two good chances to put Juventus in an even stronger position.
