News sport : Connor McMuffins are a tasty treat when spelled correctly

Photo via @hot107edmonton

This type of behavior is expected maybe in a non-traditional market, but Edmonton? Come on Hot 107, you couldn’t spell Connor right on this Connor McMuffin? There is no ‘e’ in Connor! Though nice attempt to cover it up.

Clearly the Connor McDavid palooza in Edmonton, who won the No. 1 pick and the right to select McDavid, is hitting some level of a fever pitch, and Hot 107 is no exception. Also more free advertising for McDonald’s from a Canadian NHL team! What kind of strange under-the-radar deal did the league make with McDonald’s and its Canadian franchises? (s/t Sportsnet)

Between the Hamburglar in Ottawa, and now this? Seriously. Canada is taking Burger King’s purchasing of Tim Hortons a little too personally.

Also, check out this video … and what do you find interesting about it, besides how staged it looks?

The weather in Edmonton during playoff time doesn’t appear horrible. Also, there is a buzz and an excitement amongst the good citizen of Edmonton. This is their sixth savior (counting Wayne Gretzky and the last four No. 1 picks). So maybe it’ll all work out. Nah, the Oiler's management is still there. They'll find some new way to screw this up.

But at least Hot 107 got the homage to "Superbad" correctly:

One of the most underrated scenes in that film, by far.

News sport : Tyrone Swoopes remains Texas' starting QB after spring competition

Tyrone Swoopes is still Texas’ starting quarterback.

After Saturday’s spring game, coach Charlie Strong said Swoopes did nothing to lose his starting role and backup Jerrod Heard did nothing to change that.

“I don’t want to turn this into a quarterback controversy,” Strong said according to the Dallas Morning News. “When you look at it, Tyrone has come into the spring as a starter. I don’t know that Heard has done anything yet to unseat him as a starter. I said he’s closed the gap, which is what you want.

“Ty is still the No. 1 guy at this point.”

Swoopes finished the spring game completing 17 of his 31 passes for 159 yards. He had an interception called back by a penalty and a dropped pass in the end zone. He also threw a ball out of bounds that hit a young boy in the face. Strong made Swoopes check on the boy while medics attended to him. The boy was OK.

“I just told him that I was sorry,” Swoopes said. “I burned a ball out of bounds, and I caught him not paying attention. He looked pretty bummed about it.”

Strong said he expects Swoopes, a junior, to be better this season simply because the team around him is better. Texas spent the spring making improvements to the offensive line and changing the offense from a pro-style to an up-tempo spread attack that should play better in the offense-dominant Big 12.

As for Heard, a redshirt freshman, the Texas coaching staff was pleased with his progress this spring, but even he admitted he had a long way to go.

"The game is still fast for me," Heard said. "I really do have to have the team's confidence in me. My job is to show them that when my number is called, I'll be ready."

Heard, who is the more natural fit for the Longhorns’ up-tempo offense, completed 20 of 29 passes for 177 yards. He scrambled for a touchdown and scrambled to covert a fourth down that set up a field goal. But he also fumbled a snap, tossed an interception on an underthrown pass and had a potential interception dropped by a defender.

Strong said he hoped Swoopes would continue to progress throughout the summer so he would be the starter heading into the season opener against Notre Dame.

“The thing about it is I hope I don’t have to go into Notre Dame and start a redshirt freshman,” Strong said.

News sport : Celebrate the return of Tebowmania with the Tebow Pretzel

You knew Tebowmania was going to hit the ground running (well, running and praying). We've been here before — the hype, the hope, the lunacy — so anybody that's going to break through the foaming mass of Tebow-love will have to come strong. And Philly Pretzel Factory has done just that:

The pose, of course, is reminiscent of that early-2010s craze of "Tebowing":

Tim Tebow #15 of the Denver Broncos kneels on the ground before their game against the Oakland Raiders at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum on December 19, 2010 in Oakland, California.

You remember that, don't you? Ah, we were all so young back then. Anyway, good on the Philly Pretzel Factory. All those Tebow conspiracy theorists will need something to snack on while they try to figure out how the Eagles signing Tebow ties into their theory that the NFL is blackballing the guy.

Also, should you purchase a Tebow pretzel, eat the arm first. We hear that's the tenderest part.

News sport : Todd McLellan, Sharks 'mutually agreed to part ways'

David Pollak was on to it. Todd McLellan won’t be fired from the San Jose Sharks. Instead, the team announced on Monday that they’ve “mutually agreed to part ways" with the head coach.

From the Sharks:

“I want to thank Todd and his staff for their years of service to the San Jose Sharks organization,” said [GM Doug] Wilson. “Sometimes a change is best for all parties involved but nothing will take away from what Todd and his staff accomplished here over the last seven seasons.”
“San Jose will always hold a special place for me and my family,” said McLellan. “I would like to thank Doug and the Sharks organization for allowing me the opportunity to coach at the National Hockey League level. While we both agree that a change is in the best interest of myself and the team, I’m proud of what we accomplished as an organization.”

McLellan compiled a 311-163-66 record in seven seasons in San Jose, making the postseason every year but 2014-15. In the playoffs, however, the Sharks could never live up to the high Stanley Cup expectations. They reached the Western Conference Final in consecutive years, but only won one game. And three first-round exits were highlighted by the disastrous collapse against the Los Angeles Kings a year ago, which has turned out to be the beginning of the end.

It was a toxic situation in San Jose. Last week, Logan Couture commented on the culture of the team by saying it's "not great," while supporting McLellan.

But while McLellan takes the fall here, there should be plenty of responsibility pointed Wilson’s way. After the loss to the Kings, instead of bolstering an already strong roster, the GM went out and signed Mike Brown and John Scott. They combined to play only 50 games. He then stripped Joe Thornton of the captaincy in August, and toward the end of the season, the two got into a war of words through the media after Wilson told a group of season-ticket holders that the center allowed pressure to get to him.

Wilson's the general manager, for now, and we'll see if owner Hasso Plattner goes forward with other front office changes.

McLellan, meanwhile, is already a favored target of several NHL teams who are currently without head coaches, a list that could grow over the next several weeks. The Toronto Maple Leafs and Philadelphia Flyers are reportedly interested, but the coaching markets will probably be stalled until we know the fate of Mike Babcock in Detroit.

News sport : Zach Randolph bought 500 tickets to Blazers-Grizzlies Game 1 to give away to fans

The only thing better than being there in person to watch your favorite team open the playoffs with a dominating win is having somebody else pick up the tab for you to do it. Five hundred Memphis Grizzlies fans enjoyed that sweet, sweet feeling on Sunday, taking in the Grizzlies' dominant 100-86 win over the Portland Trail Blazers at FedEx Forum after receiving tickets paid for by star power forward Zach Randolph:

[Follow Dunks Don't Lie on Tumblr: The best slams from all of basketball]

As noted in Memphis ABC affiliate WATN-TV's report, the initial plan was for Z-Bo to give away 300 tickets for the Game 1 tilt on a first-come, first-served basis after the Grizzlies' Saturday practice. But with scores of fans winding up on the short end of the stick after those 300 tickets were given away, Randolph decided to reach back into his wallet and buy another 200, ensuring that even more die-hard Grizzlies fans who might not have had the means to buy their way in on their own were on-hand to pack the Grindhouse and give the Blazers precisely the sort of welcome that visitors dread when they come to Tennesse.

The ticket giveaway is just the latest in a long line of efforts by Randolph aimed at giving back to the city that has embraced him wholeheartedly, warts and all. Since joining the Grizzlies before the 2009-10 season, he's helped in-need Memphians pay their electric and heating bills, donated $10,000 to save and care for an injured pit bill, worked to raise money for St. Jude Children's Hospital, and regularly makes huge donations to local charities and families, especially around the holidays. He's put the off-court troubles of his past behind him, becoming the sort of generous, fan-focused pro whose efforts earned him recognition as one of the five finalists for the Professional Basketball Writers Association's 2014-15 J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award, an annual honor celebrating a player, coach or athletic trainer who shows "outstanding service and dedication to the community."

"I do what I do because I remember when times were tough growing up, so I want to help families that experience those hardships," Randolph said in a statement after being named a finalist. "To win the award would be an honor for my family, my team and for Memphis, and serve as a reminder that I can always do more."

He already does plenty — including scoring 16 points, grabbing 11 rebounds and making things hard on Portland All-Star power forward LaMarcus Aldridge during Memphis' comfortable Game 1 victory — and the Grizzlies fans love him for it.

News sport : Alex Boone's criticism of 'insane' Jim Harbaugh doesn't make sense

I worry about the San Francisco 49ers this season.

Jim Harbaugh, who was not welcomed back by the 49ers and went to the University of Michigan after last season, pushed that San Francisco team hard. Here's what San Francisco guard Alex Boone had to say about it, on HBO's "Real Sports."

“He does a great job of giving you that spark, that initial boom,” Boone said, via Pro Football Talk. “But after a while, you just want to kick his (behind) ... He just keeps pushing you, and you’re like, ‘Dude, we got over the mountain. Stop. Let go.’  He kind of wore out his welcome.

“I think he just pushed guys too far," Boone said. "He wanted too much, demanded too much, expected too much. You know, ‘We gotta go out and do this. We gotta go out and do this. We gotta go out and do this.’ And you’d be like, ‘This guy might be clinically insane. He’s crazy. ...  I think that if you’re stuck in your ways enough, eventually people are just going to say, ‘Listen, we just can’t work with this.'”

It's not a bad thing that Harbaugh was demanding. He came to a team that hadn't been to the playoffs in eight consecutive seasons. His first three seasons they made the NFC championship game, winning once. Was he a tough coach? I'm sure he was. You know what else Harbaugh was? Extremely successful. Boone knew this. He said so last September.

“So what’s the problem? I’m confused. Is winning not good? Is business not a’booming right now, boys?" Boone told 95.7 The Game last September, via CSN Bay Area, when asked about possible locker room issues with Harbaugh.

“As a matter of fact, I know for a fact that everybody loves Harbaugh,”

And no, the 49ers did not get "over the mountain," as Boone said. They got very, very close, losing a Super Bowl to the Baltimore Ravens when a fourth-down pass fell incomplete. That would probably drive a competitive person to push very hard, to actually get over the mountain.

Here's the problem I have with the 49ers going forward: They seem to value nice and easy working conditions over what Harbaugh brought to the facility every day. Why else would you get rid of a coach with a 44-19-1 record (again, eight seasons without a playoff appearance before he arrived)? Probably because they got sick of him being hard to work with. Harbaugh didn't deny any of that, to "Real Sports."

“It must be true, yeah,” Harbaugh said, via PFT. “Sometimes I’d wear out my welcome.

“They just don’t want to be around you after a while."

Jim Tomsula is in a no-win situation now. As the new coach, having just seen his old boss get run out for being too demanding, how hard do you think he'll be on the players? Not too much, if he's into self preservation. If you want to make the argument that NFL players, who are all grown men, don't need to be pushed hard that's fine. But then it's also a coincidence that things happened to turn around for the 49ers at the exact moment the hard-charging Harbaugh got there.

Tomsula feels like a substitute teacher for the 49ers. One of the 49ers' best players is saying the old coach was "clinically insane" for how he pushed them. It's a guarantee that life will be different around the 49ers now.

Without Harbaugh around, the 49ers are going to have a much calmer workplace environment. Whether that translates to more wins than they had with Harbaugh, well, maybe that doesn't matter as much to them.

News sport : Baylor put no-contact restriction on 400-pound TE so he wouldn't injure teammates

Baylor offensive guard LaQuan McGowan (80) catches a touchdown pass from quarterback Bryce Petty (14) during the second half of the Cotton Bowl NCAA college football game against Michigan State Thursday, Jan. 1, 2015, in Arlington, Texas. (AP Photo/LM Otero)Baylor is ready to prove that using LaQuan McGowan as a tight end was not a one-time thing.

McGowan, a converted 6-foot-7 guard who weighs in at 400-plus pounds, caught an 18-yard touchdown pass against Michigan State in the Cotton Bowl. Since then, McGowan, who told Fox Sports that he was “425 (pounds) butt naked” and “probably about 440” in pads for the Cotton Bowl, has practiced exclusively at tight end for the Bears and is listed as a co-starter coming out of spring practice.

Baylor head coach Art Briles says the team is ready to unleash McGowan, a fifth-year senior who he has nicknamed “The Annihilator.”

“I don’t have to worry about what I say about him, because no one else has got anybody like him,” Briles told Fox Sports’ Stewart Mandel. “He’s the most unique football player in the United States with his combination of size and athletic skill.

“He’s going to be a dominant player. Not just a guy who jogs out on the field and does his job, he’s going to be dominant in what we ask him to do.”

The Baylor defense got a taste of McGowan, who’s now down to 405 pounds, throughout spring practice. The coaches actually had to put no-contact restrictions on McGowan so he wouldn’t injure his defensive teammates.

“Me and a linebacker (Grant Campbell) went head-to-head and it didn’t end well,” McGowan said. “They’re going to take the chains off (for the first game). I’m going to come out with a full head of steam.”

He also had a 21-yard catch during the Bears' spring game:

McGowan struggled to get on the field during his first three years with the program. Offensive coordinator Kendal Briles said McGowan had trouble keeping up with the Bears’ fast-paced offense. Now as a tight end, he’ll be able to substitute in-and-out to the point where he can stay fresh.

Kendal Briles, Art Briles’ son, said that tight ends play around “45 to 60 snaps per game” and catch “around 24 to 30 passes” per season in the Bears’ offense. With McGowan (and his huge hands) splitting time with 2014 starter Tre’von Armstead, Art Briles says they think they’ve found the perfect role for McGowan to contribute in a big way.

"I think we've found his niche," said Art Briles. "It's taken four years but we've found the way he can help our football team win games and help himself, and that to me is inspirational. We stereotype these guys in their roles because of their body types, and that's something we have to be careful with."

News sport : Braves reliever Andrew McKirahan suspended 80 games for PED use

(Getty Images)

The Atlanta Braves' bullpen took another hit on Monday, though this time it's not due to injury or trade. Left-hander Andrew McKirahan was suspended 80 games after testing positive for PEDs. The news comes via Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports.

McKirahan, 25, was picked up by the Braves off waivers from Miami near the end of spring training. He's the third major leaguer to receive a PED suspension so far this season. Twins starting pitcher Ervin Santana and Mets closer Jenrry Mejia are the other two. Atlanta minor league arm Arodys Vizcaino is also serving an 80-game ban for a positive test. Santana, Mejia, and Vizcaino were all said to have used the steroid Stanozolol. The substance that caused McKirahan's suspension has not been announced.

[Yahoo Sports Fantasy Baseball: Sign up and join a league today!]

Having already had their relief options weakened, most notably by trading All-Star closer Craig Kimbrel to San Diego, this is a blow that Braves president John Hart was not expecting.

From the Atlanta Journal-Constitution:

"From a club perspective we’re obviously disappointed in this one," Hart said of McKirahan’s suspension. "From a depth standpoint, we lost Shae Simmons to Tommy John (elbow surgery in January), and Vizcaino was suspended. And Feigl, it looks like potentially he may need Tommy John. This (McKirahan suspension) is sort of a double whammy in that we lost a guy we were looking at in the bullpen and we’ve lost some other weapons."

For now Atlanta will have to go forward with what they have in the bullpen. If they stay competitive, they're 8-4 through two weeks of baseball, they'll definitely check in on the trade market later in the year to look for potential reinforcements.

News sport : Did NHL screw up draft lottery, Edmonton Oilers’ win?

First thing’s first: The NHL Draft Lottery wasn’t fixed.

The horrific looks that hung on the faces of Gary Bettman and Bill Daly told us everything, after it was revealed that the League’s next can’t-miss superstar will be crushed under an avalanche of poor management, apathy for the market and sub-zero temperatures for the next 15 years.

Which is to say that Edmonton was, without much debate, the last place the NHL wanted Connor McDavid.

But just because the lottery wasn’t fixed doesn’t mean it was pulled off without a flaw, which brings us to a Reddit user’s conspiracy theory that the NHL botched its own lottery rules.

Before we get into the “conspiracy,” such as it is, please take about nine minutes to watch the meticulous explanation of the lottery’s rules and execution of the lottery itself in this video the NHL released.

It might be the most unintentionally hilarious thing the League’s put out since The Guardians Project, as charisma machine Gary Bettman does everything he can to lend transparency to every facet of the lottery process. So of course something happened to make some fans question the credibility of the lottery:

OK, here’s how the theory goes, via “McDavid2015,” whom we’re going to go ahead and guess might be a Buffalo Sabres fan:

- There’s a dude in charge of turning on the machine, hitting the vacuum/blower button and then hitting the button that sucks one ball up the tube.

- He’s told explicitly to hit that third button once every 10 seconds for reasons that we’re sure have something to do with the integrity of the draft.

- (As an aside, he looks like the kind of guy who gets blamed for screwing up something royally at the office, but who is generally well-liked for being a nice guy who brings Irish soda bread in on St. Patrick’s Day every year.)

- On the first ball, the lottery guy pushes the red button, and it emits a distinct sound: The button is pressed, and then clicks back into place.

- Inexplicably, it appears he hits the button a second time a split second later, as it emits the same sound.

- The No. 5 ball is sucked up into the tube. The No. 11 ball is right behind it, having been pushed into the tube by the second click of the button, before falling back to the tube.

Reddit

- YOU HAD ONE JOB.

- He then selects Nos. 14, 6 and 1, and the combination gives the Edmonton Oilers the top pick. Each time, those are the only balls that go up the tube. Each time, the button click doesn’t sound like the initial “two clicks” from him.

The winning team had the No. 11 ball been counted (5-11-14-6)?

The Buffalo Sabres!

Skate in the crease! Double-clicked McDavid Lottery buttons! This franchise is cursed.

Honestly, we’re certain that every lottery ever held ever that involves these machines has but one standard: It’s the ball the emerges from the top of the tube that counts. How many Mega Millions drawings have you seen where multiple balls are sucked up into the tube, but only the one drawn out by the lovely model counts?

So while much like Connor McDavid himself, we would do anything in our power to take the top pick away from the Edmonton Oilers, this “conspiracy theory” or ineptitude isn’t enough to have forced a redraw.

But, seriously, NHL: If you have another one of these draft lotteries whose integrity can’t be maligned in any way, perhaps bring in a pro at meticulously pushing a button next time?

News sport : Cardale Jones shows off arm strength with 74-yard throw (Video)

Ohio State held its spring game Saturday in front of nearly 100,000 fans at the Horseshoe. Before the annual Scarlet-Gray game got underway, fans were entertained with several competitions.

For one, the quarterbacks, along with former Buckeye Troy Smith, competed in a long-toss competition. Cardale Jones beat J.T. Barrett with this insane 74-yard throw. For what it’s worth, Braxton Miller did not participate.

Here’s another angle.

The Buckeyes also showcased their circle drill for the fans and Jones got to square off with fellow quarterback Stephen Collier.

Jones is listed at 6-foot-5 and 250 pounds. I wouldn’t want to absorb that hit, but it looks like the 6-foot-4, 225-pound Collier handled it just fine.

Once the game was finally played, Jones threw for 304 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions and led the Gray team to a 17-14 victory. Collier threw for 157 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions for the Scarlet. Barrett (shoulder) and Miller (foot) are still on the mend and sat out.

News sport : Potential first-round pick Jakob Poeltl's return is a coup for Utah

Had Utah center Jakob Poeltl entered this year's the NBA draft, the smooth, fluid 7-footer probably would have been selected in the first round.

Instead Poeltl will return to the Utes for his sophomore season, gambling that an offseason spent adding muscle and diversifying his offensive repertoire can improve his stock next spring.

"I really enjoy it here at the University of Utah," Poeltl said in a statement released Monday morning. "I love my teammates, coaches and college in general. I think another year will help my development and I'm looking forward to next season."

Poeltl's patience gives Utah a good chance to remain nationally relevant next season. Do-it-all star Delon Wright and productive 7-footer Dallin Bachynski both are gone from this past season's 26-win Sweet 16 team, but Poeltl is the centerpiece of a returning core strong enough to keep the Utes in the Pac-12's upper echelon next year.

Rising senior guards Brandon Taylor and Jordan Loveridge will be responsible for taking over Wright's role as Utah's perimeter catalysts. Promising rising sophomores Brekkott Chapman, Chris Reyes and Isaiah Wright will be expected to shoulder greater responsibility next season. And Poeltl will have to develop into a more consistent low-post scoring threat and anchor what should be an excellent defense.

Poeltl started all but one game for Utah during its breakthrough season under Larry Krystkowiak and quickly emerged as a pleasant surprise. The Austria native shot 68 percent from the field, ranked third in the Pac-12 in blocks per game and averaged 9.1 points and 6.8 rebounds.

He was at his best in the postseason, scoring in double figures in five of Utah's last six games and helping hold Duke's Jahlil Okafor to just six points in the Sweet 16.

"Jakob had a solid freshman season for us and made great strides but there is no doubt in my mind that his best basketball is ahead of him," Krystkowiak said in a statement. "He is driven, intelligent and an elite athlete. I'm excited he has faith in our program to turn the words `potential' and `project' into `proven' and possibly "prize."

News sport : White Sox set to promote top pitching prospect Carlos Rodon

(Getty Images)

Move over, Kris Bryant. There's another big-time prospect coming to Chicago.

According to multiple reports, the White Sox are expected to call-up 22-year-old left-hander Carlos Rodon on Monday. The move was first reported by Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports.

Rodon was the No. 3 overall pick in the 2014 MLB draft following a stellar college career at N.C. State. He pitched well in spring training, putting up a 3.06 ERA with five walks and 21 strikeouts over 17 2/3 innings, but was assigned to Triple-A Charlotte to start the season. In two Triple-A starts, the big lefty went 1-0 with a 3.60 ERA.

[Yahoo Sports Fantasy Baseball: Sign up and join a league today!]

The plan is for Rodon to be used in relief by the White Sox, just like they did with Chris Sale when he first arrived in the big leagues. Sale pitched exlusively out of the bullpen in 2010 and 2011 before making the jump to the rotation in 2012.

Rodon probably won't have to wait that long to get his chance to start. There's a strong possibility he makes his first major league start sometime in 2015 and earns a spot in the rotation.

[Check out Big League Stew on Tumblr for even more baseball awesomeness.]

Given the success Sale has had, it's no surprise to see the White Sox follow the same path with their latest electric left-hander.

News sport : George O'Leary interested in exhibition with another Florida school

HOUSTON, TX - OCTOBER 02: Head coach George O'Leary of the UCF Knights waits on the field during the first half of their game against the Houston Cougars at TDECU Stadium on October 2, 2014 in Houston, Texas. (Photo by Scott Halleran/Getty Images)George O’Leary isn’t a big fan of the usual intrasquad spring games we see across college football each year.

The UCF head coach said Saturday after his team’s scrimmage that he is going to reach out to coaches from Florida schools to see if they'd be interested in playing an exhibition game.

“I’d much rather see the competition level improve that way. Where you can make a true evaluation of where you’re at and give the money to charity,” O’Leary said, per the Associated Press.

O’Leary went with a starters vs. reserves format for the Knights’ spring game and the starters predictably came out on top, 20-6. Though he said it turned out to be “one of the better spring games” UCF has had during his tenure with the program, O’Leary thinks an exhibition with another program would generate more excitement.

“You’re not going to game plan things. You just go out and execute, take the kicking game out of it and I think it would be a lot more fun,” O’Leary said. “At least you’d get a lot more interest in the spring games.”

While the idea sounds good in theory, would other schools go for it? Most fans would most likely be on board with O’Leary’s idea, but opposing coaches are far more concerned about the health of their players than putting on a bigger show for the fans.

News sport : Glenn Healy said Canadiens traded Cameron Diaz for Dale Weise

Glenn Healy of Sportsnet has earned one or two detractors over the years for his hockey commentary, which can sometimes reside at the corner of Crazy Lane and Cuckoo Street.

They’re probably still laughing over Healy’s gaffe Sunday night in discussing Montreal Canadiens Game 3 hero Dale Weise, in which he envisioned a scenario where the Habs acquired him for Kimmy from “My Best Friend’s Wedding.” Said Healy:

“ANOTHER GREAT TRADE BY [Montreal GM Marc] BERGEVIN. HE TRADED HIM FOR CAMERON DIAZ, DEFENSEMAN, TO VANCOUVER.”

Forgetting the odd syntax of the statement itself – Bergevin traded Weise? – Healy was obviously going for defenseman Raphael Diaz, who as far as we can tell never used any of Ben Stiller’s hair gel.

They’re easily confused, of course: Raphael Diaz is Swiss, and Cameron Diaz once dressed like this. But other than that, they're literally Knight and Day. Confusing them on Any Given Sunday leads to Very Bad Things.

Unrelated: Healy also said that we can expect the Calder Trophy to go to Ottawa rookie Sharon Stone.

News sport : 2015 NFL Rookie Predictions: Maxx Williams has All-Pro promise

Poked, prodded, pricked -- pro prospects have been thoroughly examined by franchises leading up to this month's NFL Draft. However, fantasy owners are just now dissecting their Year 1 potential. Over the next several weeks, we'll attempt to channel our inner Mayock determining whether Rookie X will be fantasy flame or lame material this fall. Monday's profile: Minnesota tight end Maxx Williams.

College Highlights: The Mackey Award finalist and second team All-American arguably owns the most long-term upside of any tight end in this year's class. In 25 career games with Minnesota he grabbed 61 passes for 986 yards and 13 touchdowns, averaging an impressive 16.2 yards per catch. His eight receiving TDs as a sophomore were the most ever by a Golden Gopher tight end in a single season. Was Academic All-Big Ten in 2012.

Pluses: Williams was a Combine wonder setting the pace at his position in the 40-yard dash (4.78), shuttle run, broad jump and vertical jump. He is by no means a blazer, but accelerates to top speed quickly. Combine that with his 6-foot-4 length and wide catch radius and he's an imposing target to contain inside the red-zone and on seam outs across the middle. Excelled after the catch, particularly on designed screens. When the ball is in his hands, he lowers pad level and drives through contact. In general, he's fluid, shifty, athletic and blessed with large, soft hands. His outward appearance and outstanding playmaking ability explain why many scouts believe he's a future All-Pro. The son of a coach, he has high football aptitude.

Minuses: Despite weighing in at 250 pounds, Williams needs to add muscle and strength to decisively win one-on-one matchups at the next level. Though he showed improvement as a route runner from his freshman-to-sophomore years, he's still relatively unpolished. Without exceptional speed and wiggle off-the-line cleverness will be key to gain separation. Blocking remains a work in progress. Snap count will be limited until coaches trust his execution in the ground game.

Pro Comp(s): Jason Witten, Heath Miller, Dwayne Allen

Team Fits: Cleveland, Buffalo, New Orleans, Baltimore, Atlanta

Projected ADP/Auction Value ($200 cap): 200+/$1-$3

Fearless Forecast: It won't be long before fantasy owners want to hang at The Maxx. Still, history is typically unkind to first-year tight ends. Highly publicized youngsters Jace Amaro and Eric Ebron, for example, barely moved the meter last year. Additionally, Antonio Gates, Jimmy Graham and Greg Olsen were minimal contributors in their inaugural campaigns. Really only Rob Gronkowski, who made a splash in 2010 with 10 TDs, was the rare rookie tight end to accumulate TE1 numbers out the gate. Keep in mind no rookie tight end has surpassed 900 yards in a season and only two since 2000 (Gronk and Aaron Hernandez) have eclipsed five scores in a season. Williams owns tremendous ball skills, but his somewhat svelte build and questionable blocking elongates the learning curve. He's a highly recommended investment for dynasty owners, but expect his maiden NFL voyage to be filled with more more valleys than peaks.
