Dutch footballer banned for biting

An amateur player in the Netherlands has been banned for 10 games for biting after pictures of the mark he left were posted on his alleged victim's Facebook site.

|||

Amsterdam - An amateur player in the Netherlands has been banned for 10 games for biting after pictures of the mark he left were posted on his alleged victim's Facebook site.

Jerry van Staa of amateur club DETO was suspended by the Dutch FA (KNVB) after Thomas Smedema published a photo of the teeth marks left on his back.

“During the derby against DETO a player bit me in the back,” Smedema posted on his page. “A lowly and cowardly deed.

“His coach and the referee were not brave enough to take him off the field. Such a person has no place on the football field.”

Van Staa denied the accusation in a newspaper interview, saying he lost balance after being shoved and fell with his mouth in Smedema's back.

“He then turned around and punched me,” he told De Twentsche Courant Tubantia.

The KNVB, alerted to the post and following up on last month's incident, suspended Smedema for two matches for the punch.

Van Staa is to appeal against his 10-match ban.

News sport : Dakota State coaches show us the hilarious 'Dizzy Punt' (Video)

After a day of practice, NAIA program Dakota State (SD) decided to have some fun by playing a game called “Dizzy Punt” with defensive coordinator Cory Miller and head coach Josh Anderson.

The idea is for each coach to hold a golf club to their head (a la “Dizzy Bat”) and spin around 12 times before attempting to punt the football.

As you can see, the punts did not get very far. Miller (left) needed help to even get to the football, which was about five yards in front of him.

One thing is certain: the players had a lot more fun than the coaches did.

United feared losing Rooney to City

Manchester United's owners were convinced the club would lose Wayne Rooney to Manchester City in 2010.

|||

Manchester United's owners were convinced the club would lose Wayne Rooney to Manchester City at the height of the uncertainty which led them to give him a £200,000-a-week contract.

The fears of the club's hierarchy are revealed in the first detailed behind-the-scenes insight into the Glazer family's 10-year reign at Old Trafford, written by their former spokesman Tehsin Nayani. He describes “a growing resignation among the club's hierarchy” that Rooney would be “on his way out to join Abu Dhabi-owned Manchester City”, in October 2010.

Though Rooney subsequently said on the club's in-house TV station that he would never have signed for City, it has never been made clear what kind of situation the Glazers faced at the height of the controversy. In his own autobiography, the former manager Sir Alex Ferguson made no allusion to any direct threat posed by the neighbours, describing simply how Rooney appeared in his office with a “hugely sheepish” look on his face. “I felt he'd been programmed in what he was trying to say,” Ferguson said. “The basis of his complaint was that we were not sufficiently ambitious.”

Rooney publicly questioned United's ambitions two hours before a Champions League match against Bursaspor. Two days later, after what Nayani describes as “a most unedifying public relations battle between Rooney and United,” the club confirmed it had entered into intensive talks with the player's representatives as “a rapprochement was possible”.

The book lays bare Nayani's contempt for Rooney, whom he accuses of making a “crudely disguised dig” at the Glazers by making his claim that United were no longer able to “attract the top players in the world”. He describes his desire to make his feelings about Rooney's conduct clear, rather than the agreed strategy, which was: “Say absolutely nothing.” Ferguson described how Rooney was “made one of the highest paid players in the country” after a conference call with the Glazers, at which “the future ambitions of the club were discussed”.

Nayani's book - The Glazer Gatekeeper - provides a revealing insight into the Glazers' equanimity in the face of huge opposition to their ownership by United supporters, which culminated in the green and gold campaign. He describes how co-chairman Joel Glazer refused to believe that elements of the club's fanbase “hated” them - even rejecting the notion on the feverish night when David Beckham appeared to support the green and gold campaign.

After Beckham took a scarf offered him after he left the field on his return with Milan, who lost 4-0 at Old Trafford in March 2010, Nayan called Glazer, who had watched the potentially symbolic gesture live on television in the United States. “From where I'm sitting there are many millions of fans who are just happy the team are through to the next round [of the Champions League],” Glazer said. “They're supporters of United too. I get that some fans don't like us, but to hate us, it's such a strong word. To hate us when the club has been so successful, it's extraordinary.”

When Nayani pointed out that Beckham was “a good catch” for the protesters, Glazer replied: “I get that, but we don't know Beckham's motives for putting on the scarf. Also, I'm not sure the publicity is necessarily bad.”

“But Beckham's gesture is likely to be construed as a negative,” Nayani said. “Sure, but let's strip this back. What I mean to say is that football is a passionate business. Won't it blow over? It's always blown over in the past.” – The Independent

News sport : MSU hoops coach Ben Howland: Football is 'most important' college sport

Jan. 26, 2013; Tempe, AZ, USA: UCLA Bruins head coach Ben Howland against the Arizona State Sun Devils at the Wells Fargo Arena. Mandatory Credit: Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports After two seasons away from the game, Ben Howland became the new men’s basketball coach at Mississippi State last month. He hopes to resurrect a program that has struggled in recent years, but will first get a chance to serve as a guest coach during the Bulldogs’ spring football game on Saturday.

On the football field, the Bulldogs ascended to No. 1 in the rankings late in the year, but lost three of their last four games. Howland said part of the allure of accepting the MSU job was the football program’s success. He even said that football is “the most important sport on a major college campus.”

"When you look at football and basketball, all the best programs in the country, with the exception of a few maybe, have both," Howland said, per Al.com. "I knew that having good football only helps basketball.

"Let's be clear here. The most important sport on a major college campus is football because it costs the most and it has the most revenue potential to bring money into the university. Football is very, very important. I love college football."

Some coaches want their respective sport to be the center of attention and wouldn’t be attracted to a job where basketball plays second fiddle. Howland isn’t one of them and said that the SEC’s football prowess was a major selling point.

“There’s no question, it’s not even debatable, who has the best football conference in America. Period. It’s the SEC,” Howland said. “It’s raised everybody’s level. Mississippi State was No. 1 in the country for five weeks last year in football, and that’s absolutely awesome.”

As for his short stint as guest football coach on Saturday, Howland has a plan.

“I have a formula. Get the ball to Dak Prescott,” he said of MSU’s senior quarterback. “We’re going to run the ball. We’re going to run the option.”

News sport : Charlotte to serve 6.5-lb burritos, 6-lb burgers at All-Star Race

The track that gave us the Funnel Bacakonator is back with some more crazy concessions.

Charlotte Motor Speedway announced Friday that it will serve a 6.5-pound burrito and a six-pound burger during the All-Star Race weekend on May 15-16.

Yes, those measurements are in pounds and not ounces. If you're looking for something less hefty, you can always go with the candied bacon on a stick the track introduced with the burrito and the burger.

First, the details on the burrito.

The "Crank Shaft Burrito," which will cost $25, has four tortillas, 1.5 pounds of beans, 1.5 pounds of cole slaw and 3 pounds of pulled pork. It also has a half-pound of cheese sauce plus a quarter-pound of jalapenos and "more" baked beans, slaw and pork. If you're scoring at home, you'll notice that the ingredients add up to more than 6.5 pounds, so depending on the amount of "more," you could score a seven-pound burrito.

Oh, it's also 1,685 calories, which doesn't seem as outlandish as it could be.

The burger is the "Speedway Picnic Burger" and has eight quarter-pound burgers and eight hot dogs. It also contains 1.5 pounds of pulled pork and a pound of bacon, though it only has eight slices of cheese. We were hoping for 10.

It also includes lettuce and tomato, but really, you're not buying that burger for the vegetables, are you? It's on a 14-inch bun and is 2,156 calories.

At $35, the burger nets you 61.6 calories per dollar while the burrito is approximately 67.4 calories per dollar. Yes, when you're a former fat kid you sometimes do these type of calculations to see what gets you more caloric bang for your buck.

The burger is also wrapped in a tablecloth for the full picnic experience, though we're just thinking it's because the lines between napkin and tablecloth become blurred when you're wrapping food of that size.

The track promotes both items as shareable, however we've got a feeling that there will be many people attempting solo conquests. However, in this age of American gluttony we won't truly be amazed unless someone eats them both in a two-hour timeframe. We guarantee someone is going to try it, and if you're that somebody, let us know. We'd love to know if the task was accomplishable, and if so, how you felt in the hours afterwards.

This is glorious.

The ISU Letterwinners Club posted a 'Field of Dreams' imitation to YouTube earlier in the week featuring linebacker Levi Peters and coach Paul Rhoads.

We're not sure you need us to explain the similarities to the movie, which was set in Iowa.

The clip is a promo for the renovations the school is doing at Jack Trice Stadium. Iowa State is expanding the stadium's capacity to 61,000 and adding a second video board, among other things.

News sport : Bryan Stow takes big step in recovery, throws out first pitch at minor-league game

Bryan Stow, the San Francisco Giants fan who was nearly beaten to death four years ago outside Dodger Stadium, took another big step in his inspirational road to recovery on Thursday night.

Stow attended the home opener of the Class-A San Jose Giants and threw out the ceremonial first pitch. Jimmy Durkin of the San Jose Mercury News described the scene at Municipal Stadium:

Stow was accompanied by his sister and two children for the event, and said he will attend the Giants-Dodgers game in San Francisco next week. More from Durkin:

"A lot was going through my brain," Stow said. "I would love to do it again. When do they play again? Tomorrow? I can be here tomorrow."

Stow, using a walker, took the field and was handed a ball that came via special delivery. A helicopter landed in center field, and a sheriff's deputy emerged and delivered the ball to Stow, who acknowledged that it was "a little scary" making the walk out to the mound.

Stow waved to the crowd and then delivered an underhand toss to the plate. Several coaches and players greeted him, and he flashed more smiles, waves and thumbs up toward the crowd as he exited the field with his family.

Stow has come a long way from that frightening night in 2011. As a result of the beating Stow suffered severe injuries to his skull and brain and was placed in a medically induced coma. Doctors weren’t sure if he would live, let alone walk again. But there he was on Thursday night, once again enjoying the game he loves.

News sport : Johnny Manziel apologizes to Browns, says he's working to earn back trust

Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel is out of rehab, and he might not be ready to discuss his various difficulties, but he is ready to say he's sorry.

In a statement released by Manziel through the team, he said:

"I would like to thank my family, friends, the Browns organization, my teammates, and Browns fans everywhere, for your patience, understanding, and support during my stay at Caron. The doctors and staff have been amazing and what I’ve learned in the last couple of months has been tremendous. I owe private apologies to a lot of people that I disappointed but a very public one to the Browns organization and the fans that I let down. I take full responsibility for my actions and it’s my intention to work very hard to regain everyone’s trust and respect.

"I understand that will take time and will only happen through what I do and not what I say. I also understand there’s a lot of curiosity about this but anyone who has a friend or family-member that’s been through things like this knows it’s an ongoing process. I’m going to continue to ask folks to try to respect my privacy as I determine to what degree I am comfortable talking about a subject which I consider very personal. Most of you have been considerate about that and I thank you for it. I look forward to seeing my teammates next week and focusing on football and my desire to be the best possible player, teammate, and man that I can be.”

Some of Manziel's teammates, such as Joe Thomas and Donte Whitner, have said that they are hoping to see Manziel show a different side in his second season with the team and earn back his trust. This statement, even if Manziel didn't himself pen it (notice the Oxford comma? Nice touch!), is a good start, post-rehab, towards that end.

Manziel is trying his best to keep on the down low, or so he says, and yet eventually he's going to have to face the media and rehash a lot of this stuff. He also might be exposed to the behind-the-scenes cameras of "Hard Knocks" — ratings! — if HBO has its way.

So this thing has a long way to go. But if you're the Browns, you have to feel good about the first step back by their talented but troubled quarterback.

Liverpool academy ditches eThekwini deal

The Liverpool Football Club academy has pulled out of the multimillion-rand sporting development near King’s Park and is looking for a permanent home at another site in Durban.

|||

The Liverpool Football Club academy has pulled out of the multimillion-rand sporting development near King’s Park and is looking for a permanent home at another site in Durban.

Hoy Park Management, the company behind the development, confirmed that the academy would no longer be part of it and that the site would be used primarily as an elite soccer academy of the SA Football Association (Safa).

The 14.334ha northern precinct site at King’s Park came under the spotlight last year after the eThekwini Municipality gave Berea Rovers Club – which occupies the site – notice to vacate.

The city signed a 30-year lease agreement with Hoy Park Management to develop the area.

The development, which is being partly funded by the city and the province, was sold to Durban ratepayers as a site that would eventually have six synthetic soccer fields, a high-performance centre, the Liverpool academy and a hotel.

Yesterday Carlos Catalino, managing director of Hoy Park Management, confirmed the change in plans.

He said the precinct was being developed with Safa, and would eventually house 88 “elite” youngsters from around KwaZulu-Natal.

City manager, Sibusiso Sithole, said he did not know anything about the latest development.

“I don’t have the most recent progress report, so I can’t help you,” he said. He referred the Daily News to the city’s communications department, which had not responded to questions by the time of publication.

The development will consist of a world-class sports centre with accommodation, training, medical and recreational facilities aimed at drawing international teams for their preseason training sessions and winter breaks.

There will also be facilities for hockey and rugby.

Catalino said Liverpool was meant to be part of the development initially but needed bigger facilities.

“Initially they were going to be coming in. But they needed a bigger base and a bigger set-up which the developer could not offer them.

“There was only one field for them. They need two or three fields to operate. We have the Safa academy and we would require our fields.

“It would not be possible to have everything in the same section,” he said.

“Liverpool was going to initially come in and rent facilities and lease certain parts and hours of the day, but they are no longer going to and they are going to have their own venue.

“They will not be part of Safa, we need to keep that totally separate.”

Catalino insisted the original plan was always to have a Safa academy and that the Liverpool academy was separate.

He said that unlike the Liverpool academy model, which requires players to pay a fee to be part of the set-up, the Safa academy would be free to youngsters with potential to be professional footballers.

“What we are doing at King’s Park is developing elite players. The programmes are different, it is not the same programme.”

Chief executive of the Liverpool academy, CJ Benjamin, said it was never cast in stone that they would be part of the King’s Park precinct.

Private

“The Liverpool academy is a private institute and we could use any field across the country for our academy because it is independent. It is not run by Safa or influenced by it… Liverpool academy is a private academy and players pay us.”

Benjamin said that since launching in January, the academy had operated from George Campbell Technical High School. She said they were looking for a permanent base in Durban.

“(Moving to the King’s Park precinct) was a tentative conversation (with the developers). There was never a single document in place. It is not the crux of the Liverpool academy that we have to be based at the precinct. We will choose a facility that is best for the Liverpool academy standards,” she said.

Benjamin said the Durban academy was one of two in the country. The other is in Johannesburg.

Ray Curtis, the newly appointed head coach of Liverpool football academy who recently moved to South Africa to take up the position, said they were looking for a football pitch suitable to develop the correct technical programme for their young players.

He said they were keen at securing one that had a “good history and family values”.

“We have to make sure it is safe for the players, the kids and the coaches. The ideal scenario is a nice, manicured pitch just like Anfield but that is not always available. We are willing to compromise as long as it is somewhere that has the potential to be developed,” he said.

“On top of that, we need decent changing rooms, showers and medical support. We are looking for reasonable standards.”

Safa referred all questions relating to the issue to its president, Danny Jordaan, who was said to be out of the country. He could not be reached by the time of publication. – Additional reporting by Kamcilla Pillay

News sport : Michigan's attendance streak was boosted with 60,000+ free tix

Michigan's streak of home games with over 100,000 people in attendance got a significant assist from comped tickets in 2014.

According to the Detroit News, the school had a significant increase in free tickets given out last season.

There were 62,879 free tickets distributed during the 2014 season that accounted for roughly 8.6 percent of attendance, a sharp increase from the previous season, when 2.8 percent of the attendance came from comp tickets. Even with the comps, the stadium surpassed its capacity of 109,901 only once, and that came in a night game against Penn State.

The last time Michigan had a home game with less than 100,000 was on Oct. 25, 1975. The News says the six-figure mark includes "tickets sold, tickets distributed, staffing, catering employees, university facility and operations employees, the spirit squad and marching band, and the media."

The increase in the practice, while striking, isn't all that surprising given Michigan's struggles in 2014. Not only did the team perform poorly on the field, there was the whole debacle with quarterback Shane Morris and the coaching staff's handling of his concussion.

You may also remember the promotion last season that saw two tickets (briefly) given away to the team's game against Minnesota with the purchase of a Coca-Cola product. The school called the promotion a "miscommunication" after a picture of the sign started to spread.

While Michigan is likely to not win the national title in 2015, we're going to guess comp ticket levels will go back to where they were in 2013, if not lower. With the optimism surrounding former quarterback Jim Harbaugh's return to the school as a coach, the program won't be having to beg people to come to football games.

News sport : USC women's tennis team accidentally smashes PAC-12 trophy

Before you read any further, just remember: there's not a whole lot of catching involved in tennis.

The USC women's tennis team won the PAC-12 championship on Thursday over UCLA, which is certainly a notable achievement worth celebrating. And when the team celebrated, well, things got a bit out of hand:

Whoops.

It's not the first time a precious trophy has ended up in shards. Most notably, Alabama's $30,000 Waterford crystal football commemorating the football team's 2011 national championship shattered when a player's father bumped the case. Similarly, a recruit destroyed Florida's 2006 championship football by accident in 2008.

Still, a trophy's just a trophy; it's the celebration that counts. And the team enjoyed the victory as well as a fine new story:

Congrats to the team. Perhaps they can incorporate it into their next hype video:

News sport : Daily Dime: Corey Kluber, Jed Lowrie and various Dodgers

Happy Kris Bryant Day, friends. Please enjoy it responsibly. Below, you'll find the usual daily recommendations. As always, we urge you to view the weather reports and double-check lineups before finalizing selections.

[Yahoo Sports Fantasy Baseball: Sign up and join a league today!]

Corey Kluber, SP, at Min (Pelfrey), $10,700 at FanDuel: Friday's slate features a few notable pitching mismatches, including Scherzer-vs.-O'Sullivan and Kershaw-vs.-Kendrick. Kluber is a bit cheaper than the other blue-chip options, and he's facing a guy with a 1.48 career WHIP.

And while we're picking on Pelf...

Brandon Moss, 1B, at Min (Pelfrey), $3500: Sure, he's off to a slow start this season, but the degree-of-difficulty will be dialed down against Pelfrey. Moss is 5-for-10 in his career against the giant righty, and the price is right.

Lucas Duda, 1B, vs. Mia (Phelps), $4100: Duda is binging at the moment, coming off three straight multi-hit games, with six extra-base hits included. He's facing a not-so-intimidating right-hander in this one (David Phelps), so I'm not expecting him to cool off just yet.

Joc Pederson, OF, vs. Col (Kendrick), $3500: I'm pretty much always looking eat at the Kyle Kendrick buffet of runs and hits, whether he's pitching at altitude or not. Pederson has been reaching base at an outstanding clip (.444 OBP), and his power/speed potential is well-documented. If Andre Ethier sneaks into Friday's lineup (he's just $2600 at FD), I'll be interested in him, too.

Jed Lowrie, SS, vs. LAA (Weaver), $3400: Lowrie is hitting well, slashing .286/.394/.643 for Houston and batting third most nights. He's facing a struggling Jered Weaver (8.71 ERA), a guy who's somehow averaging only 83.3 mph on his fastball. I'm rolling with Jed in all lineups.

Kevin Kiermaier, OF, vs. NYY (Warren), $2900 : If you're deploying one of the pricier aces in action on Friday, then you're going to need to find some bargains somewhere. Kiermaier is raking lately, hitting .344 with a pair of home runs in his 32 at-bats. Adam Warren shouldn't frighten you away from the Rays' low-cost LHBs.

Matt Joyce, OF, at Hou (Hernandez), $3200: With an unthreatening right-hander on the mound, Joyce should find himself batting fourth, positioned to drive in Trout and Pujols. You know what to do.

Wil Myers, OF, at CHC (Hammel), $3100: Myers has four multi-hit efforts in his last five starts, raising his season average to .293. He's also leading off for the Pads, which works for our purposes.

Derek Norris, C, at CHC (Hammel), $2400: Honestly, I've got nothin' against Jason Hammel. He's fine — not stellar, but fine. Norris just happens to be a dirt-cheap catcher who bats second for his team, and the man can hit a little (.270 at the moment). Again, if you're dropping $11K or more on your starting pitcher on Friday, you're going to need to sketch in the rest of your daily lineup with a few quality, low-cost options.

Alejandro De Aza, OF, at Bos (Kelly), $3100: De Aza has been leading off for the O's, and he's hitting .314 with an OPS of .905. Joe Kelly was terrific in his first start of the season for Boston, but he remains Joe Kelly. At this price, I'm plenty interested in Alejandro.

London - Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany may not be fit before the end of the season because of a muscle injury, manager Manuel Pellegrini said.

The 29-year-old centreal defender limped off at halftime during last weekend's 4-2 derby defeat by Manchester United and could miss City's remaining six games of the campaign.

“We don't know if he will be fit before the end of the season,” Pellegrini told a news conference.

London - Manchester United's Michael Carrick, Marcos Rojo, Phil Jones and Daley Blind will miss Saturday's Premier League clash against leaders Chelsea because of injury, manager Louis van Gaal said on Friday.

“It is the worst scenario,” Van Gaal told a news conference.

“Marcos and Phil can both play left central defender and Jonny Evans is also suspended so I do not have many choices.

“Daley Blind and Michael Carrick could play as a holding midfield player and I do not have another option. It is a puzzle.”

Third-placed United arrive at Stamford Bridge on a run of six successive league victories and buoyed by their 4-2 derby demolition of champions Manchester City last weekend.
