News sport : VOD: Iowa State channels 'Field of Dreams'

This is glorious.

The ISU Letterwinners Club posted a 'Field of Dreams' imitation to YouTube earlier in the week featuring linebacker Levi Peters and coach Paul Rhoads.

We're not sure you need us to explain the similarities to the movie, which was set in Iowa.

The clip is a promo for the renovations the school is doing at Jack Trice Stadium. Iowa State is expanding the stadium's capacity to 61,000 and adding a second video board, among other things.

News sport : Bryan Stow takes big step in recovery, throws out first pitch at minor-league game

Bryan Stow, the San Francisco Giants fan who was nearly beaten to death four years ago outside Dodger Stadium, took another big step in his inspirational road to recovery on Thursday night.

Stow attended the home opener of the Class-A San Jose Giants and threw out the ceremonial first pitch. Jimmy Durkin of the San Jose Mercury News described the scene at Municipal Stadium:

Stow was accompanied by his sister and two children for the event, and said he will attend the Giants-Dodgers game in San Francisco next week. More from Durkin:

"A lot was going through my brain," Stow said. "I would love to do it again. When do they play again? Tomorrow? I can be here tomorrow."

Stow, using a walker, took the field and was handed a ball that came via special delivery. A helicopter landed in center field, and a sheriff's deputy emerged and delivered the ball to Stow, who acknowledged that it was "a little scary" making the walk out to the mound.

Stow waved to the crowd and then delivered an underhand toss to the plate. Several coaches and players greeted him, and he flashed more smiles, waves and thumbs up toward the crowd as he exited the field with his family.

Stow has come a long way from that frightening night in 2011. As a result of the beating Stow suffered severe injuries to his skull and brain and was placed in a medically induced coma. Doctors weren’t sure if he would live, let alone walk again. But there he was on Thursday night, once again enjoying the game he loves.

News sport : Johnny Manziel apologizes to Browns, says he's working to earn back trust

Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel is out of rehab, and he might not be ready to discuss his various difficulties, but he is ready to say he's sorry.

In a statement released by Manziel through the team, he said:

"I would like to thank my family, friends, the Browns organization, my teammates, and Browns fans everywhere, for your patience, understanding, and support during my stay at Caron. The doctors and staff have been amazing and what I’ve learned in the last couple of months has been tremendous. I owe private apologies to a lot of people that I disappointed but a very public one to the Browns organization and the fans that I let down. I take full responsibility for my actions and it’s my intention to work very hard to regain everyone’s trust and respect.

"I understand that will take time and will only happen through what I do and not what I say. I also understand there’s a lot of curiosity about this but anyone who has a friend or family-member that’s been through things like this knows it’s an ongoing process. I’m going to continue to ask folks to try to respect my privacy as I determine to what degree I am comfortable talking about a subject which I consider very personal. Most of you have been considerate about that and I thank you for it. I look forward to seeing my teammates next week and focusing on football and my desire to be the best possible player, teammate, and man that I can be.”

Some of Manziel's teammates, such as Joe Thomas and Donte Whitner, have said that they are hoping to see Manziel show a different side in his second season with the team and earn back his trust. This statement, even if Manziel didn't himself pen it (notice the Oxford comma? Nice touch!), is a good start, post-rehab, towards that end.

Manziel is trying his best to keep on the down low, or so he says, and yet eventually he's going to have to face the media and rehash a lot of this stuff. He also might be exposed to the behind-the-scenes cameras of "Hard Knocks" — ratings! — if HBO has its way.

So this thing has a long way to go. But if you're the Browns, you have to feel good about the first step back by their talented but troubled quarterback.

Liverpool academy ditches eThekwini deal

The Liverpool Football Club academy has pulled out of the multimillion-rand sporting development near King’s Park and is looking for a permanent home at another site in Durban.

|||

The Liverpool Football Club academy has pulled out of the multimillion-rand sporting development near King’s Park and is looking for a permanent home at another site in Durban.

Hoy Park Management, the company behind the development, confirmed that the academy would no longer be part of it and that the site would be used primarily as an elite soccer academy of the SA Football Association (Safa).

The 14.334ha northern precinct site at King’s Park came under the spotlight last year after the eThekwini Municipality gave Berea Rovers Club – which occupies the site – notice to vacate.

The city signed a 30-year lease agreement with Hoy Park Management to develop the area.

The development, which is being partly funded by the city and the province, was sold to Durban ratepayers as a site that would eventually have six synthetic soccer fields, a high-performance centre, the Liverpool academy and a hotel.

Yesterday Carlos Catalino, managing director of Hoy Park Management, confirmed the change in plans.

He said the precinct was being developed with Safa, and would eventually house 88 “elite” youngsters from around KwaZulu-Natal.

City manager, Sibusiso Sithole, said he did not know anything about the latest development.

“I don’t have the most recent progress report, so I can’t help you,” he said. He referred the Daily News to the city’s communications department, which had not responded to questions by the time of publication.

The development will consist of a world-class sports centre with accommodation, training, medical and recreational facilities aimed at drawing international teams for their preseason training sessions and winter breaks.

There will also be facilities for hockey and rugby.

Catalino said Liverpool was meant to be part of the development initially but needed bigger facilities.

“Initially they were going to be coming in. But they needed a bigger base and a bigger set-up which the developer could not offer them.

“There was only one field for them. They need two or three fields to operate. We have the Safa academy and we would require our fields.

“It would not be possible to have everything in the same section,” he said.

“Liverpool was going to initially come in and rent facilities and lease certain parts and hours of the day, but they are no longer going to and they are going to have their own venue.

“They will not be part of Safa, we need to keep that totally separate.”

Catalino insisted the original plan was always to have a Safa academy and that the Liverpool academy was separate.

He said that unlike the Liverpool academy model, which requires players to pay a fee to be part of the set-up, the Safa academy would be free to youngsters with potential to be professional footballers.

“What we are doing at King’s Park is developing elite players. The programmes are different, it is not the same programme.”

Chief executive of the Liverpool academy, CJ Benjamin, said it was never cast in stone that they would be part of the King’s Park precinct.

Private

“The Liverpool academy is a private institute and we could use any field across the country for our academy because it is independent. It is not run by Safa or influenced by it… Liverpool academy is a private academy and players pay us.”

Benjamin said that since launching in January, the academy had operated from George Campbell Technical High School. She said they were looking for a permanent base in Durban.

“(Moving to the King’s Park precinct) was a tentative conversation (with the developers). There was never a single document in place. It is not the crux of the Liverpool academy that we have to be based at the precinct. We will choose a facility that is best for the Liverpool academy standards,” she said.

Benjamin said the Durban academy was one of two in the country. The other is in Johannesburg.

Ray Curtis, the newly appointed head coach of Liverpool football academy who recently moved to South Africa to take up the position, said they were looking for a football pitch suitable to develop the correct technical programme for their young players.

He said they were keen at securing one that had a “good history and family values”.

“We have to make sure it is safe for the players, the kids and the coaches. The ideal scenario is a nice, manicured pitch just like Anfield but that is not always available. We are willing to compromise as long as it is somewhere that has the potential to be developed,” he said.

“On top of that, we need decent changing rooms, showers and medical support. We are looking for reasonable standards.”

Safa referred all questions relating to the issue to its president, Danny Jordaan, who was said to be out of the country. He could not be reached by the time of publication. – Additional reporting by Kamcilla Pillay

News sport : Michigan's attendance streak was boosted with 60,000+ free tix

Michigan's streak of home games with over 100,000 people in attendance got a significant assist from comped tickets in 2014.

According to the Detroit News, the school had a significant increase in free tickets given out last season.

There were 62,879 free tickets distributed during the 2014 season that accounted for roughly 8.6 percent of attendance, a sharp increase from the previous season, when 2.8 percent of the attendance came from comp tickets. Even with the comps, the stadium surpassed its capacity of 109,901 only once, and that came in a night game against Penn State.

The last time Michigan had a home game with less than 100,000 was on Oct. 25, 1975. The News says the six-figure mark includes "tickets sold, tickets distributed, staffing, catering employees, university facility and operations employees, the spirit squad and marching band, and the media."

The increase in the practice, while striking, isn't all that surprising given Michigan's struggles in 2014. Not only did the team perform poorly on the field, there was the whole debacle with quarterback Shane Morris and the coaching staff's handling of his concussion.

You may also remember the promotion last season that saw two tickets (briefly) given away to the team's game against Minnesota with the purchase of a Coca-Cola product. The school called the promotion a "miscommunication" after a picture of the sign started to spread.

While Michigan is likely to not win the national title in 2015, we're going to guess comp ticket levels will go back to where they were in 2013, if not lower. With the optimism surrounding former quarterback Jim Harbaugh's return to the school as a coach, the program won't be having to beg people to come to football games.

News sport : USC women's tennis team accidentally smashes PAC-12 trophy

Before you read any further, just remember: there's not a whole lot of catching involved in tennis.

The USC women's tennis team won the PAC-12 championship on Thursday over UCLA, which is certainly a notable achievement worth celebrating. And when the team celebrated, well, things got a bit out of hand:

Whoops.

It's not the first time a precious trophy has ended up in shards. Most notably, Alabama's $30,000 Waterford crystal football commemorating the football team's 2011 national championship shattered when a player's father bumped the case. Similarly, a recruit destroyed Florida's 2006 championship football by accident in 2008.

Still, a trophy's just a trophy; it's the celebration that counts. And the team enjoyed the victory as well as a fine new story:

Congrats to the team. Perhaps they can incorporate it into their next hype video:

News sport : Daily Dime: Corey Kluber, Jed Lowrie and various Dodgers

Happy Kris Bryant Day, friends. Please enjoy it responsibly. Below, you'll find the usual daily recommendations. As always, we urge you to view the weather reports and double-check lineups before finalizing selections.

[Yahoo Sports Fantasy Baseball: Sign up and join a league today!]

Corey Kluber, SP, at Min (Pelfrey), $10,700 at FanDuel: Friday's slate features a few notable pitching mismatches, including Scherzer-vs.-O'Sullivan and Kershaw-vs.-Kendrick. Kluber is a bit cheaper than the other blue-chip options, and he's facing a guy with a 1.48 career WHIP.

And while we're picking on Pelf...

Brandon Moss, 1B, at Min (Pelfrey), $3500: Sure, he's off to a slow start this season, but the degree-of-difficulty will be dialed down against Pelfrey. Moss is 5-for-10 in his career against the giant righty, and the price is right.

Lucas Duda, 1B, vs. Mia (Phelps), $4100: Duda is binging at the moment, coming off three straight multi-hit games, with six extra-base hits included. He's facing a not-so-intimidating right-hander in this one (David Phelps), so I'm not expecting him to cool off just yet.

Joc Pederson, OF, vs. Col (Kendrick), $3500: I'm pretty much always looking eat at the Kyle Kendrick buffet of runs and hits, whether he's pitching at altitude or not. Pederson has been reaching base at an outstanding clip (.444 OBP), and his power/speed potential is well-documented. If Andre Ethier sneaks into Friday's lineup (he's just $2600 at FD), I'll be interested in him, too.

Jed Lowrie, SS, vs. LAA (Weaver), $3400: Lowrie is hitting well, slashing .286/.394/.643 for Houston and batting third most nights. He's facing a struggling Jered Weaver (8.71 ERA), a guy who's somehow averaging only 83.3 mph on his fastball. I'm rolling with Jed in all lineups.

Kevin Kiermaier, OF, vs. NYY (Warren), $2900 : If you're deploying one of the pricier aces in action on Friday, then you're going to need to find some bargains somewhere. Kiermaier is raking lately, hitting .344 with a pair of home runs in his 32 at-bats. Adam Warren shouldn't frighten you away from the Rays' low-cost LHBs.

Matt Joyce, OF, at Hou (Hernandez), $3200: With an unthreatening right-hander on the mound, Joyce should find himself batting fourth, positioned to drive in Trout and Pujols. You know what to do.

Wil Myers, OF, at CHC (Hammel), $3100: Myers has four multi-hit efforts in his last five starts, raising his season average to .293. He's also leading off for the Pads, which works for our purposes.

Derek Norris, C, at CHC (Hammel), $2400: Honestly, I've got nothin' against Jason Hammel. He's fine — not stellar, but fine. Norris just happens to be a dirt-cheap catcher who bats second for his team, and the man can hit a little (.270 at the moment). Again, if you're dropping $11K or more on your starting pitcher on Friday, you're going to need to sketch in the rest of your daily lineup with a few quality, low-cost options.

Alejandro De Aza, OF, at Bos (Kelly), $3100: De Aza has been leading off for the O's, and he's hitting .314 with an OPS of .905. Joe Kelly was terrific in his first start of the season for Boston, but he remains Joe Kelly. At this price, I'm plenty interested in Alejandro.

Kompany worry for City

Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany may not be fit before the end of the season because of a muscle injury, manager Manuel Pellegrini said.

London - Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany may not be fit before the end of the season because of a muscle injury, manager Manuel Pellegrini said.

The 29-year-old centreal defender limped off at halftime during last weekend's 4-2 derby defeat by Manchester United and could miss City's remaining six games of the campaign.

“We don't know if he will be fit before the end of the season,” Pellegrini told a news conference.

United hit by defensive injuries

London - Manchester United's Michael Carrick, Marcos Rojo, Phil Jones and Daley Blind will miss Saturday's Premier League clash against leaders Chelsea because of injury, manager Louis van Gaal said on Friday.

“It is the worst scenario,” Van Gaal told a news conference.

“Marcos and Phil can both play left central defender and Jonny Evans is also suspended so I do not have many choices.

“Daley Blind and Michael Carrick could play as a holding midfield player and I do not have another option. It is a puzzle.”

Third-placed United arrive at Stamford Bridge on a run of six successive league victories and buoyed by their 4-2 derby demolition of champions Manchester City last weekend.

Chelsea - the worst behaved team

Chelsea have the unfortunate tag of being the worst-behaved team in the top flight when it comes to respecting officials.

|||

London - Chelsea may top the Premier League table but Jose Mourinho's side have the unfortunate tag of being the worst-behaved team in the top flight when it comes to respecting officials, according to Football Association Fair Play delegates.

Chelsea, who have a seven-point lead in the Premier League with seven games remaining, have received widespread criticism for their attitude towards referees this season despite Mourinho suggesting they are victims of a 'campaign' by the FA and media.

The data, complied by FA Fair Play delegates who attend every Premier League match, shows Chelsea have the least respect towards match officials, the Telegraph reported.

Teams are marked out of seven when assessing behaviour towards the referee and his assistants, and Chelsea have a respect mark of 159 compared to Liverpool's 181, which makes Brendan Rodgers's side the most respectful towards officials.

“A positive attitude, including the acceptance of doubtful decisions without protest, will be rewarded with high marks,” guidelines published on the Premier League website state.

“Normal behaviour without any particular positive attitudes or gestures towards match officials is likely to receive a score of 6 rather than 7.”

Chelsea are also the second worst team when it comes to the behaviour of club staff on the touchline, with struggling Sunderland the only side above them.

Mourinho's assistant Rui Faria appeared to celebrate Cesc Fabregas's late winner right in front of opposition manager Chris Ramsey in Sunday's west London derby against Queens Park Rangers.

“Positive and negative aspects of the team officials' conduct will be assessed - such as whether they calm down or provoke angry players or fans and how they accept the decisions of the referee,” the guidelines state.

“Co-operation with the media will also be taken into account.”

Honesty not the best policy - Pitso

Following Sundowns’ thrashing by Blemfontein Celtic, Pitso Mosimane was understandably looking worse for wear.

|||

Following Sundowns’ thrashing by Blemfontein Celtic, Pitso Mosimane was understandably looking worse for wear.

That the Premier Soccer League (PSL) was awarding him with the accolade for the best coach of the last two months (February and March) was not going to do much to cushion the blow of the fact he is unlikely to defend his club’s Absa Premiership title.

The 5-0 hammering by Bloemfontein Celtic on Wednesday night clearly still rankled, Mosimane was at his grumpy best.

And it was not long before the source of his foul mood came to the fore, the man they affectionately call ‘Jingles’ whingeing about what he felt was a belittling of his efforts by the media to the extent he threatened to quit the local game. “You don’t understand me,” said Mosimane, “You always want me to be apologetic and not voice my opinions.

“There was a point when I decided that I am not going to speak, but the PSL told me that I have to speak. The thing is, when I speak, I tell the truth – all the time. Even when I am called by the Disciplinary Committee (DC), I don’t lie.

“It is very tough for me because I have a lot of passion for the game.

“I give back to the game. I spend a lot of time on the game and I work very hard and give my life to football. I don’t cheat the game, I don’t waste time playing golf, I am a loyal servant of football,” said the former Bafana Bafana coach.

“Sometimes I feel like South Africa doesn’t understand me; you personalise me. And I feel like, if it becomes too difficult for me, maybe I should go to youth coaching or go to neighbouring countries. I can coach anywhere in the world. And leave (South Africa).

“Is that what you want? If anybody wants me to be apologetic, I will give you that, those boring interviews.

“When you speak from your heart, it is not accepted in South Africa. Maybe I will go to youth football. I love football, but I will leave the country. Yes, I won’t earn as much as I am earning at the moment. I will have to adjust and probably have to change my lifestyle, but I will still be able to take my kids to school,” said Mosimane.

Mosimane was announced as the Absa Premiership Coach of the Month (February and March) with his striker Cuthbert Malajila scooping Player of the Month at the PSL offices in Parktown yesterday.

For getting the award, Mosimane thanked everyone at Sundowns for helping him with the team. “Physical trainers, goalkeeping coaches, everyone has done exceptionally well at the team. This award is not about me, it is about Mamelodi Sundowns. There is still a lot to play for, we just have to accept the defeat (to Celtic) and move on. We can’t dwell on it.”

Malajila, on the other hand, says he will be looking to add more goals to the 10 he has scored so far this season to help Sun-downs get back to winnings ways. He says their chances of defending their title aren’t over yet. “You don’t know what will happen tomorrow, the league is not over yet. We need to win all our games and see what happens.” - The Star

Crunch time in PSL relegation scrap

With the Premiership title almost decided, the relegation battle moves firmly into focus ahead of this weekend’s matches.

|||

Johannesburg – With the Premiership title almost decided, the relegation battle moves firmly into focus ahead of this weekend’s matches.

First up on Saturday is the clash between Polokwane City and Free State Stars at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane at 3pm.

City have the luxury of not being involved in the scrap to avoid the drop, but at eighth spot on the log with 33 points with five games remaining they will be looking to secure their lucrative top-eight position. The top eight teams at the end of the season gain entry into the MTN8 Cup, and will serve as motivation for the mid-table outfits to finish as high as possible.

For Stars, however, they are second from bottom of the log on 22 points, ahead of last-placed Moroka Swallows only on goal difference. The team that finishes last on the log will be relegated to the National First Division (NFD) automatically, while the team who finished 15th on the log will enter the relegation playoffs with two teams from the NFD.

One of the reasons the Free State outfit find themselves in trouble coming to the close of the season, is they have scored the second fewest goals in the league with 24 from as many matches. Stars coach Kinnah Phiri said he would address this issue ahead of the City fixture.

“We are working mainly on attack, because we haven’t been scoring goals. We have also been conceding goals that we shouldn’t have, especially from set pieces,” said Phiri.

The coach said he had identified the reason behind his side’s soft defence and had an appropriate plan.

“I have just devised a strategy to prevent that. When I coached in Malawi with my previous team, for six years we did not concede a goal from a set piece. I have now brought in that strategy to Free State Stars and the players are very happy with it.

“Apart from the set-piece defence and attacking, we have hardly conceded goals in play. We defend well, except at free kicks.”

In the evening, at an 8.15pm kickoff SuperSport United host Swallows at Peter Mokaba Stadium.

United were placed sixth on the log on 34 points with five games remaining, and would also have a top eight finish on the log a bare minimum in their objectives.

The Birds, meanwhile, will be looking to turn their season around with their five games left, and at the very least avoid the automatic drop.

In the other evening fixture, Wits host Chippa United at Bidvest Stadium. The high-flying Clever Boys come off a 2-0 win over Orlando Pirates at their Milpark home ground, and will be hoping to improve on their fourth place with 44 points as they are only behind the Soweto side on goal difference.

For Chippa, it will also be important to get at least a point from the clash. The Cape side appear safe in 13th spot on the log, and five points ahead of third-from bottom AmaZulu, but any run of poor results from their five remaining games could see them engulfed in the relegation battle. – ANA

Szczesny’s Arsenal future in doubt

If Wojciech Szczesny was still Arsenal's first choice goalkeeper he would be sitting on the bench watching Saturday's FA Cup semi-final against Reading.

|||

London - If Wojciech Szczesny was still Arsenal's first choice goalkeeper he would be sitting on the bench watching Saturday's FA Cup semi-final against Reading rather than playing in it, said manager Arsene Wenger.

But unlike last year's semi-final when he was among the substitutes watching fellow Polish international Lukasz Fabianski playing against Wigan Athletic, Szczesny will be in goal while Colombia keeper David Ospina has the afternoon off.

It might also be one of Szczesny's last appearances for the club after nine years in north London as Wenger could not say for certain that the Pole would be content to stay having lost the No.1 spot after 3-1/2 seasons as his first choice.

The only matches Szczesny has played since losing his place following the 2-0 defeat at Southampton in the Premier League on New Year's Day have been in the Cup against Brighton, Middlesbrough and Manchester United.

However, even though Wenger said he thought Szczesny had an excellent game in the 2-1 sixth-round win at Old Trafford, the Frenchman remained non-committal about his keeper's future.

“I hope Wojciech stays, but at the moment it is very difficult to answer that question,” he told reporters.

Last season, when Arsenal won the FA Cup to end a nine-year trophy drought, Szczesny did not play in the competition but since being replaced by Ospina in January his only appearances have come in the cup.

Wenger, speaking at Arsenal's training ground, left no-one in any doubt who was now Arsenal's No.1.

“I replaced Wojciech because he had a bad game,” Wenger said. “I still think he is a great goalkeeper and I want him to have the opportunity to show that. But if Wojciech remained No.1, Ospina would be playing on Saturday.”

Szczesny was dropped after the defeat at Southampton when he was also fined 20,000 pounds ($29,918) by the club for smoking in the showers afterwards.

Arsenal's form has improved dramatically since then and they have won 13 of the 15 matches Ospina has started and 16 of their last 18 in all competitions.

Wenger did not agree that their improved form was just down to the change, explaining: “We had many players who were out in the first part of the championship and they have all come back and been in form since January.” – Reuters

Toure digs in his heels

Yaya Toure will not be forced out of Manchester City, but the club is set to make the midfielder available this summer.

|||

Yaya Toure will not be forced out of Manchester City, but the club is set to make the midfielder available this summer.

Sportsmail revealed earlier this week that the Barclays Premier League champions will listen to offers for the Ivorian as they look to reshape their squad after such a disappointing season.

But Toure is determined not to be forced out of the door at the end of the campaign. He is said to be content with life at the Etihad Stadium despite the difficulties and is in no rush to leave.

Toure has more than two years left to run on his £220,000-a-week deal and is unlikely to move for anything less. A number of clubs, such as Inter Milan, are interested in the 31-year-old, but given his huge wages there must be doubts over whether they would be able to afford it.

Inter are prepared to offer Toure a five-year deal to compensate for the pay-cut he would be required to take if he moved to Italy — although it is unlikely that he would agree to a such a compromise.

There had been talks about a contract extension for Toure at City — which included the possibility of an ambassadorial role when he hangs up his boots — but the club are now happy for him to go.

City, meanwhile, will resist any attempt by Valencia to pull out of a £24million deal for Alvaro Negredo to fund a move for Radamel Falcao, currently on loan at Manchester United.

Negredo joined Valencia on loan last summer and the agreement included a clause involving a permanent move to the Mestalla. Reports in Spain yesterday suggested that Valencia are having second thoughts about keeping Negredo next season, but City are adamant that the deal will go through.

The 29-year-old striker scored 23 goals in his first season at the Etihad following a £20.6m move from Sevilla, but he has only found the net five times for Valencia. When he scored in Monday’s 3-0 win over Levante, the Spain striker refused to celebrate, fuelling speculation over his future. Financial problems mean Valencia are struggling to hold onto key players such as defender Nicolas Otamendi. But it has not stopped them being linked with a move for Falcao, who is set to leave United at the end of his season-long loan from Monaco.

Falcao’s agent Jorge Mendes is an advisor to Valencia owner Peter Lim and offloading Negredo is seen as one way of affording the Colombian.

City had scouts at Porto, watching their 3-1 Champions League win over Bayern Munich on Wednesday night, with the home team’s Brazilian left back Alex Sandro said to be the focus of interest. – Daily Mail
