Toure, Nasri set to exit City

Manchester City have decided to listen to offers for Yaya Toure and Samir Nasri this summer.

|||

Manchester City have decided to listen to offers for Yaya Toure and Samir Nasri this summer as the Barclays Premier League champions look to repair the damage of a disastrous title defence.

City manager Manuel Pellegrini is under intense scrutiny following Sunday’s 4-2 defeat by neighbours Manchester United. But as the City board refuse to give up on their manager just yet the decision has been made to jettison high-profile players who the club believe have failed them.

Toure will be made available before his value in the market dwindles. Nasri, meanwhile, has barely played since his lame showing in the Champions League at Barcelona. Defender Aleksandar Kolarov and striker Edin Dzeko are also short of admirers within the club, while midfielder James Milner is out of contract this summer.

Toure may be difficult to sell as he earns in excess of £1million a month. Pellegrini is vulnerable but may be saved by a relatively undemanding fixture list up to the end of the season and by the fact that City’s No 1 choice to replace him, Pep Guardiola, is contracted to Bayern Munich for another year.

However, City fear captain Vincent Kompany will miss a few weeks of the run-in with a thigh injury. – Daily Mail

Did Sterling use laughing gas?

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has pledged to question Raheem Sterling about footage of him apparently using nitrous oxide.

|||

Liverpool - Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers will speak to striker Raheem Sterling after footage emerged of the England international apparently taking nitrous oxide.

Images published on The Sun's website appeared to show the 20-year-old Sterling passing out unconscious after taking the substance, which is described as a legal high.

Sterling, who scored the opening goal in Liverpool's 2-0 victory over Newcastle United at Anfield on Monday, is currently stalling on a new contract and admitted recently that he had rejected a new 100 000 pounds-a-week deal.

“He's a young kid who has been in the spotlight now so he knows the demands of being a top class player and a top class professional,” Rodgers told reporters after Liverpool's victory over Newcastle.

“When you are a professional sports person it's not something you should be doing, but I'll speak to him on that.

“We want players here that are super pro and focused on their football.

“It's not just on the field, it's off the field as well, but I will speak with him on it and we'll move on.”

Over the weekend a picture also emerged of Sterling on social media where he appeared to be smoking from a shisha pipe.

Liverpool, who play Aston Villa in an FA Cup semi-final at Wembley on Sunday, are fifth in the Premier League with 57 points from 32 matches.

Sterling, Allen shine for Liverpool

Liverpool have secured a comfortable Premier League victory against Newcastle United, who finished with 10 men.

|||

Liverpool - Liverpool kept alive their hopes of Champions League football next season with a comfortable 2-0 Premier League victory on Monday against a Newcastle United side who finished with 10 men.

A goal in each half from Raheem Sterling and Joe Allen respectively secured victory and closed the gap on fourth-placed Manchester City to four points with six games remaining.

When Liverpool and Newcastle meet goals are normally the order of the day with 130 scored in their previous 41 league meetings without a single goalless draw in that time.

Sterling ensured that run continued when he netted after nine minutes to give Liverpool the perfect start following back-to-back league defeats by Manchester United and Arsenal.

Allen doubled Liverpool's lead in the 70th as Newcastle, who had Moussa Sissoko sent off for a second booking late on, were condemned to a fifth straight league defeat.

Fifth-placed Liverpool now have 57 points from 32 games, one point ahead of Southampton in sixth, and are closing in on ailing City who lost 4-2 at local rivals Manchester United on Sunday, while struggling Newcastle remain 13th with 35 points.

“Manchester City have maybe opened up the door a wee bit and if we keep winning our games we will see what will happen but I am sure that there will be plenty of twists and turns to come still,” said Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers.

Liverpool, who play Aston Villa in an FA Cup semi-final at Wembley on Sunday, arrived at Anfield in desperate need of a win to close the gap on Manchester City and give themselves renewed hope of qualifying for the Champions League.

Sterling, making his first Anfield appearance since a BBC interview about his decision to wait on signing a new contract, gave the hosts the perfect start when he weaved his way into the box and curled an exquisite shot past goalkeeper Tim Krul.

Newcastle spent most of the first period on the back foot but they finished it strongly and felt they should have won a penalty when Ayoze Perez was wiped out in the box after a wild swing of the boot from defender Dejan Lovren.

Sterling missed a glorious chance to double his tally at the start of the second half when he scuffed Henderson's cross wide from point-blank range but Allen made amends for the England forward's miss when he lashed the ball home from close range.

Newcastle were then reduced to 10 men when midfielder Sissoko received a second yellow card for a mistimed tackle on Lucas as John Carver's side fell to yet another defeat leaving them in danger of being dragged into a relegation battle.

News sport : Blazers lose Batum (right knee), McCollum (left ankle) in first half vs. Thunder

The Portland Trail Blazers are locked into the No. 4 seed in the Western Conference, are assured of having to open the first round of the playoffs on the road since their opponent will end the season with a superior record, have already lost three wings to injury and entered Monday night without All-Star power forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who's nursing a sprained left foot. With no chance to improve their seeding and just two games left in the regular season, at this point, Blazers fans were just hoping that what remains of the team to make it to the playoffs in one piece.

Unfortunately, as Blazers fans know as well as anyone, you don't always get what you hope for. Two more starters — small forward Nicolas Batum and shooting guard C.J. McCollum, whom coach Terry Stotts slid into the starting lineup after losing Arron Afflalo, to whom Stotts turned after losing Wesley Matthews — went down in the first half of Monday's meeting with the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Batum suffered a right knee injury with just over a minute and a half remaining in the opening quarter. The veteran swingman and teammate Joel Freeland both jumped to try to collect a rebound of a missed 3-point shot by Oklahoma City guard Dion Waiters:

As Batum came down, he landed awkwardly on his right foot, seeming to stick in place as he landed, shaking and falling forward, putting his hands out to brace himself against the hardwood. He did not join his teammates in the frontcourt on offense, leaving him as the lone line of defense after Waiters picked the pocket of Portland reserve point guard Tim Frazier and drove to the basket. Batum just got his body in Waiters' way, taking the foul so he could get himself off the court and to the sideline, where he was met by a pair of athletic trainers, who helped him to the back.

Batum, who was already dealing with a sore back, finished with one point and one rebound in 10 1/2 minutes.

[Follow Dunks Don't Lie on Tumblr: The best slams from all of basketball]

McCollum's injury came just before intermission, after an Enes Kanter putback of a Russell Westbrook miss gave Oklahoma City a seven-point lead in a must-win game to keep pace with the New Orleans Pelicans in the race for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference:

As McCollum broke toward the ball to take the inbounds pass, Westbrook stepped into his path. McCollum tried to elude Westbrook, but he stepped awkwardly as he planted his left foot, tumbling to the ground. He got up and limped as quickly as he could off to the sideline, but was clearly in pain and couldn't quite get comfortable in his gait again.

He finished with four points on 2-for-8 shooting, four assists, two rebounds and a block in 20 minutes of work.

The loss of two rotation wings left Stotts with just eight healthy bodies for the balance of Monday's game, which is not exactly ideal for matching up with the desperate Thunder on the road. Whatever the outcome Monday, though, what matters most will be the follow-up evaluations on Tuesday; should either Batum or McCollum (or, gulp, both) wind up having injuries that linger on, the wounded Blazers' already tall task of toppling whichever team finishes fifth without home-court advantage will become even more challenging.

Simeone plotting Real’s downfall

When Diego Simeone returned to Atletico Madrid as coach in January 2012, his objective was an ambitious one.

|||

Madrid – When Diego Simeone returned to Atletico Madrid as coach in January 2012, his objective was not to prevent the troubled

team from slipping down into the relegation zone – but instead something much more ambitious.

The former Atletico midfielder – a hero for the fans for his role in the 1996 league-and-cup-double – did not mention his long-term plan in public, because many people might have questioned his sanity had he done so.

His long-term goal was nothing less than to change the balance of football power in the Spanish capital, by equipping Atletico to

compete permanently with illustrious neighbours Real, and ultimately emerge from their shadow.

After three years of success that even Simeone could not have expected, he is close to his objective. His hard-working,

never-say-die team has beaten Real six times now – four of them this present season – en route to winning last term’s Spanish league, the 2013 cup and 2014 Supercup.

However, there remains one competition in which Simeone’s battlers have still not beaten Los Merengues: the Champions League.

Simeone was just two minutes away from doing this last May, in the final in Lisbon.

His team were close to clinching Atletico’s first Champions League crown – until an agonizing Sergio Ramos equalizer in stoppage time led to extra-time, in which the Whites prevailed 4-1.

“What I would give to play that match again,” mused Simeone some months later.

“But I think we will have another chance to beat them in the Champions League, sooner or later.”

Well, that chance has now come, with Atletico hosting Real in Tuesday’s quarter-final first leg, in what will be a packed Estadio

Calderon.

“I’m not obsessed with revenge for Lisbon,” Simeone said when the Madrid teams were paired together in the Uefa draw.

“After all, we have beaten them four times since them. But what I would like is to finish our bad luck in the Champions League, once and for all.”

That bad luck started in 1959, when Atletico were edged out by Real in the semi-finals. Real, winners of the first three editions, beat Atletico 2-1 in the first leg but were defeated 1-0 in the second leg, at Atletico’s old Estadio Metropolitano.

Under current rules, Atletico would have gone through on the away goals rule. Instead, a playoff was organized in Zaragoza – and

Atletico lost 2-1.

Atletico’s foul luck in the competition continued in 1974. They managed to reach the final, in Brussels against Bayern Munich, and

were one minute away from finishing as 1-0 winners in extra-time.

However, a speculative long shot from Bayern defender Georg Schwarzenbeck then eluded Atletico keeper Miguel Reina and gave the German champions a 1-1 draw.

Atletico crashed 4-0 in the replay two nights later, in what was an ominous taste of things to come in Lisbon 40 years later.

But now Simeone, who masterminded Atletico’s Europa League triumph in 2012, has the chance to finally lead Atletico to European Cup glory – if they can see their way past Real for the first time.

“All I will say is that it is going to be a very close tie, probably decided in one or two small details,” Simeone said about the

quarter-finals after Saturday’s 2-2 La Liga draw at Malaga.

Simeone has transformed Atletico from midtable mediocrity to league and cup winners. He has committed his long-term future to the club by extending his contract until 2020.

His challenge now, starting on Tuesday, is to finally get past Real in the Champions League, the most prestigious competition of all. – DPA-ANA

News sport : Wolves' Andrew Wiggins posterizes Pelicans' Omer Asik

There weren't many knocks on Andrew Wiggins' profile as an NBA prospect during his lone collegiate year at Kansas, but one of the few critiques that seemed to gain traction focused on whether or not the reedy swingman was aggressive and assertive enough to be able to use his estimable physical talents to take control of games against the best competition at the highest level. Some unfortunate folks even wondered whether he was too Canadian to dominate. (Seriously.)

[Follow Dunks Don't Lie on Tumblr: The best slams from all of basketball]

Well, judging by the way Wiggins has developed over the course of his first NBA season after being selected first overall in the 2014 NBA draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers and traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves, "aggressiveness and assertiveness" no longer seem to be a problem. Just ask New Orleans Pelicans center Omer Asik, one of the league's pre-eminent rim protectors and shot-deterrents, whether he thinks the young Wolf doesn't have enough dog in him:

Wiggins, all 6-foot-8 and 200 pounds of him, collides in mid-air with Asik, who's listed at 7 feet tall and 255 pounds. He bounces off the massive Turk, continues to rise up, cocks the ball back with his right hand and absolutely hammers it down through the rim. Asik can do nothing but look up and wonder what fresh hell just came raining down on top of his head.

The answer? A thunderbolt from the right arm of the likely Rookie of the Year, which is the kind of thing that's happening more frequently as the still-just-20-year-old Wiggins gets more and more reps under his belt. From "The Stifle Tower" to Asik to a shot-blocker near you, Wiggins seems intent on taking advantage of his height, length, springs, body control and developing strength to make sure that no more opponents, fans or pundits make the mistake of letting the smooth taste ever again.

News sport : Oklahoma quarterback competition is still wide open

Apr 11, 2015; Norman, OK, USA; Oklahoma Sooners quarterback Baker Mayfield (6) looks to pass during the spring football game at Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium. Red wins 20-7 over White. Mandatory Credit: Rob Ferguson-USA TODAY Sports With spring practice in the books, Oklahoma’s quarterback competition is still wide open. All four candidates – Trevor Knight, Baker Mayfield, Cody Thomas and Justice Hansen – are still in the running, and Saturday’s spring game didn’t make things any clearer for head coach Bob Stoops and new offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley.

“We’re gonna let this thing go until the fall,” Riley said, per ESPN.com. “It’s gonna be a great battle. There’s not enough separation.”

All four candidates saw their fair share of snaps in front of more than 30,000 at Memorial Stadium. As with any spring game, there were positives and negatives.

“They’ve had a nice spring again in their reads and what they’re doing with the ball,” Stoops said. “I think they were definitely putting some balls up that when it’s practice it’s no big deal, but when you’re in game-type situations it’s a bigger deal.”

Stoops said the forced passes and interceptions were not a reflection of the group’s solid play throughout the spring.

“They’ll learn from it,” Stoops said. “This isn’t indicative of what I’ve seen all spring. I’ve been pleased with what they’ve been doing all spring.”

Three of the candidates – Knight, Mayfield and Thomas – have a solid base of regular season experience, but each turned the ball over on Saturday.

Knight, who threw for 78 yards and an interception on 6-of-13 throwing on Saturday, burst onto the scene toward the end of his redshirt freshman season, especially with a standout Sugar Bowl performance against Alabama, but had a disappointing sophomore campaign.

Thomas started three games after Knight was injured (he returned for the Citus Bowl) and completed just 46 percent of his passes while throwing two touchdowns and four interceptions. Thomas completed 5-of-12 passes for 83 yards and an interception on Saturday.

Mayfield threw for 2,315 yards, 12 touchdowns and nine interceptions as a true freshman at Texas Tech in 2013 before transferring to the Sooners. He showed flashes by completing 10-of-13 passes for 176 yards and a touchdown, but he also threw two interceptions.

Hansen, a redshirt freshman, is the dark horse candidate of the group. He was 5-of-5 for 70 yards on the afternoon.

This will be one to keep an eye on as we inch toward the fall.

News sport : Derrick Rose compares his most recent surgery rehab to 'Hell'

Yes, it was against the Philadelphia 76ers, and yes, the Sixers were playing without their best player in Nerlens Noel, but the Chicago Bulls looked great on Saturday evening. Not only did the team win to keep pace in the race for the third seed, but Derrick Rose also easily had his best game since his return from knee surgery earlier in the week.

[Follow Dunks Don't Lie on Tumblr: The best slams from all of basketball]

Rose scored 22 points on 19 shots, he dished eight assists and pulled in six rebounds. Most importantly, the bounce appeared to be back.

Speaking to reporters prior to Monday’s important game against the Brooklyn Nets, Rose credited his six-week rehab as the reason for the bounce, while giving us some insight into what probably was a rather dark winter for the 2011 MVP:

"Hell," Rose said when asked what the last six weeks were like. "Because you got to do rehab over again. Waking up at 7:30 every day and being there two hours before practice, beating everybody to the training room when you arrive to a city. You have to do two or three workouts every day. So the game, that’s kind of easy. For sure it’s easy."

The last two years have not been easy for Derrick Rose.

We’re nearing the two-year anniversary of Rose’s initial left ACL tear, an injury that knocked him out of what could have been his first championship season (the Bulls tied for the best record in the NBA in 201-12), and one that laid him out for the entirety of 2012-13. Many criticized Rose for sitting out a whole season, noting that other ACL tear sufferers had returned to action weeks earlier than Rose, but Derrick Rose was not and will never be a typical NBA player – ex-MVPs aren’t usually put into that particular position, they’re not allowed on-court baby steps.

Rose’s 2013-14 comeback was cut short due to a torn right meniscus just ten games into the season, a season that saw Rose struggle mightily on both ends of the court. Meniscus tears often lead to persistent knee pain and follow-up surgeries (Russell Westbrook and Eric Bledsoe have undergone several over the last two years), which made Derrick Rose’s operation in late February as expected as it was frightening.

The point guard is returning to action with just a few games to go before the regular season ends, in a desperate bid to establish some form of continuity with a Bulls rotation that is healthy on paper (forward/center Joakim Noah will play each game, but he is clearly far from one hundred percent). Monday’s game will mark the penultimate contest of the team’s regular season, and even the relative familiarity of the playoff setup might not provide the Bulls with the certainty they need to make an impact in the East.

The dark part is over, though. At least Rose has that.

News sport : Anderson Silva pushes to compete for Brazil in taekwondo at the 2016 Olympics

When the Olympic Summer games head to Rio de Janeiro next summer, Brazil could have former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva helping its medal count.

That is, if "Spider" has anything to say about.

Silva, who is 5th-degree black belt in taekwondo, penned a letter to the president of the Brazilian Taekwondo Federation (CBTKD), Carlos Fernandes, expressing his desire to compete for the national team in the 2016 Summer Games.

"Everybody knows that for a high-performance athlete, the Olympic games is the dream of every athlete, and it wouldn't be different with me," Silva wrote on the CBTKD webpage. "It will be a great pleasure to be part of this golden team, which has a serious institution, commanded by president Carlos Fernandes, who honors us very much, along with his team. Therefore, I wish to represent taekwondo and Brazil in the Olympic games in 2016. With all my esteem, strength and honor."

Whether or not Silva actually represents Brazil is anyone's guess at this point; however, Silva is, in fact, meeting with President Fernandes soon to discuss, as Fernandes has stated, this "magnificent possibility."

Silva began his taekwondo training at just 14 years old. Since that time, he used it to become one of the most heralded strikers the sport of mixed martial arts has ever seen. Silva, 39, is currently suspended by the Nevada State Athletic Commission for failing drug tests before and after his fight with Nick Diaz in January at UFC 183.

Silva has expressed interest in a potential Olympic run in previous years, but the talk was quickly shut down as Silva focused on his MMA career.

Testing for the Olympics is conducted by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and is much more stringent than the tests he faced during his MMA career. If Silva is looking to put his PED debacle in MMA to rest, a clean and authoritative run in Rio may just help in restoring his championship legacy with fight fans.

News sport : Six important NBA veterans are gearing for make their playoff debuts

On Monday, Boston Celtics guard Isaiah Thomas won the NBA’s Eastern Conference Player of the Week award for his 22.7-point, 5.7-assist performance over three games – all Boston wins. His work helped keep the C’s alive in the Eastern playoff hunt, as Boston will enter Monday night with the seventh seed in the East, with Isaiah offering stuff like this along the way:

Every aspect of this – Isaiah Thomas working as the East’s best player for a week (for the second, award-winning time this season), him doing it for Boston, the Celtics actually potentially making the postseason – are a bit charming and surprising.

Just as charming was Thomas’s quote following the team’s win over the Cavaliers on Sunday, as reported by Jackie MacMullan of ESPN Boston:

Asked how much it would mean to him to make the playoffs Thomas answered, "For me personally? It's everything. In my NBA career, I haven't been to the playoffs. It's something I want to experience. I heard it's fun, it's exciting.''

It is exciting! The playoffs start this weekend, and Thomas is the unlikely go-to guy for his third team in 12 months. Thomas, the last man selected in the 2011 NBA draft, missed the playoffs during his first three seasons with Sacramento and was well on his way toward missing it in his first season with the Phoenix Suns when he was dealt to Boston in February. The Celtics have won eight of 19 games since he moved to Boston, hardly a knockout record but enough to possibly make Thomas a postseason attendee.

There are a few other playoff rookies rolling around as spring sets in. Let’s take a look at a few.

Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love, Cleveland Cavaliers

Irving, just as charmingly as Thomas, offered this nationally televised question all the way back on Halloween:

Irving’s numbers in his first season as the lead guard on a championship (much less “playoff”) contender are remarkably similar to the stats he was putting up on the three previous terrible Cavalier teams he had to work with. At 22 points and five assists a game, Irving remains a remarkably no-muss/no-fuss scoring point guard. His assists have dropped slightly this season with LeBron James often manning the offense, but his three-point shooting has sparked up to 41 percent. His defense has improved to the ranks of the passable.

The same can’t be said, sadly, for Kevin Love.

[Follow Dunks Don't Lie on Tumblr: The best slams from all of basketball]

The former Timberwolves All-Star has seen his scoring average decline by nearly ten points per game to 16.5 a contest, and if his 9.9 rebounds per game average sustains he will finish with (just barely) single digit caroms per contest for the first time since his rookie year. That year saw Love badly underutilized by coach Randy Wittman for the first chunk of the season, and while Cavs coach David Blatt has been working Love 34 minutes a night, he’s often the afterthought in Cleveland’s top five offense.

That’s a shame, but as it often was for Chris Bosh in Miami it may not get in the way of a Cavaliers championship. It hasn’t been the easiest regular season for Love, but after missing the postseason for the first six years of his career, he’ll take it.

Nikola Mirotic, Chicago Bulls

To call the Bulls forward a “rookie” is almost disingenuous, he’s an NBA rookie by the letter of the law, but the 23-year old has been playing professionally for six years now. To refer to Mirotic as a “postseason rookie” is pushing it just as much, as he’s won three Spanish League titles with Real Madrid, earning the King’s Cup MVP for his work in 2014.

Mirotic will probably not be the rookie of the year this season, for good reason, but he is an important cog in a Chicago machine that is hurriedly scurrying to make sense of its suddenly-healthy rotation as it attempts to stand up as a clear threat in the East. Mirotic, averaging ten points and five rebounds in only 20 minutes a game (offering significant crunch time contributions along the way), needs to be the straw that stirs Chicago’s drink.

Isaiah Thomas, Boston Celtics

Thomas is up to 19.5 points per game with his new team, he’s yet to start a game with Boston but acts as their go-to force down the stretch. The Celtics weren’t supposed to make the playoffs this year, but the team is currently a game up and working with the seventh seed as the eighth-place Brooklyn Nets gear up for a contest against the Bulls on Monday evening.

Ironically, Thomas’ Celtics are in the same position as his former club in Phoenix – trying to sneak into the lower reaches of the playoff bracket. The disappointing Suns, who dealt Thomas in February, will miss the postseason for the fourth straight season.

Michael Carter-Williams, Milwaukee Bucks

Carter-Williams could not have seen this coming. Nobody should have seen this coming.

The second year guard was supposed to ride out yet another losing season with the lowly Philadelphia 76ers, a franchise that tanked both this year and last on its way toward acquiring a cadre of high end draft picks. Dealing the 2013-14 Rookie of the Year to Milwaukee less than a year after he earned that award was shocking enough, what made the upturn even more remarkable is the idea that Carter-Williams would somehow improve his playoff potential by joining the Bucks – the only team to turn in a worse record than last year’s Sixers.

The Bucks have surprised, though Carter-Williams has struggled to lead the team at times. Averaging 13.7 points, 5.7 assists and 3.9 boards in under 31 minutes a contest, MCW has watched as the Bucks have turned in a 10-17 record since the deal (9-14 with him in the lineup). Carter-Williams has looked fantastic over his last three games, however, hitting for 20.3 points on 61 percent shooting with 6.7 assists a contest as Milwaukee secured its playoff status with a 2-1 stretch and near-win over the LeBron-led Cavaliers.

Anthony Davis, New Orleans Pelicans

This one isn’t a given, but it’s certainly something we’d like to see.

Entering Monday’s contest with the Minnesota Timberwolves, the Pelicans are tied with the Oklahoma City Thunder for the final spot in the West. NOLA, however, owns the tiebreaker over OKC thanks in no small part to the brilliance of Davis. The Pelicans aren’t on national television as much as the Thunder, which means that a giant chunk of basketball fandom hasn’t seen much of Davis thus far. They may not know that the third-year forward/center is on the verge of turning in one of the highest Player Efficiency Ratings in NBA history, or that his 24 points per game (on 53.7-percent shooting) has as much to do with his lights-out perimeter shooting as it does his throwdown dunks.

Davis also contributes a league-leading 2.9 blocks and 1.5 steals along with 10.2 rebounds. Had he played more games this season (he could finish the year at just 68), those who looked the other way with their MVP votes would have a hard time explaining themselves.

And we might, for the first time, get to see him under the klieg lights in late April. Such a deal.

News sport : Tom Brady throws out first pitch at Red Sox opener, doesn't do so great

The Boston Red Sox, with no trophy of their own to hoist this year, invited Tom Brady and Bill Belichick of the New England Patriots to star in their Fenway Park opener. Pats owner Robert Kraft and president Jonathan Kraft were there too, carrying Super Bowl trophies for good measure.

[Yahoo Sports Fantasy Baseball: Sign up and join a league today!]

Brady was tasked with throwing out the first pitch, which shouldn't have been too hard, since you know, he throws balls for a living and is generally considered to be among the best in his profession. He was also drafted as a catcher by the Montreal Expos. So first pitch, no problemo, right Tom?

Well, about that. Here's what happened:

David Ortiz was able to dig out the wild first pitch, so things weren't too terrible. Nobody's going to be comparing Brady to 50 Cent or anything like that. Brady did better in the batting cage, smacking lob balls thrown to him by Pedro Martinez.

Remember kids, Tom Brady isn't all-the-way perfect. He bounced a first pitch at Fenway Park. We can always hold that against him.

Royce Reed, Braylon's mother, filed a complaint against Howard in August alleging that Howard had whipped their son with a belt. A spokesperson for the Florida Department of Children and Families told TMZ in November that the investigation was "being closed with no substantiated findings of physical injuries." A subsequent TMZ report, however, indicated that the doctor who examined Braylon's injuries reported them as being consistent with a history "of being struck with a belt numerous times by his father."

While the allegation were reported in Florida, the alleged abuse in question was said to have taken place in Georgia. Following the TMZ reports, authorities in Georgia re-opened their investigation into child abuse claims against Howard. The 29-year-old center was not arrested or charged with any crime as authorities investigated the claims.

On Monday, nearly five months after the resumption of investigation, Atlanta police announced that they will not press charges against the eight-time All-Star, according to Mark Berman of KRIV-TV FOX 26 in Houston:

"I can confirm we are not moving forward with charges in this case," said Sgt. Gregory Lyon, in an email to FOX 26 Sports.

Howard's attorney, David Oscar Markus, is pleased with the decision.

"We are gratified that the Atlanta Police Department, after fully examining the frivolous allegations against Dwight Howard, has closed the case and decided not to proceed with charges," said Markus in a statement to FOX 26 Sports.

"Dwight Howard will continue to act in the best interest of his children and do whatever is necessary to protect their welfare."

Howard filed a motion in November seeking sole custody of Braylon that continues to wend its way through the courts, according to Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle.

Howard has struggled with injuries this season, missing 37 games with an ailing right knee. Since returning to action 2 1/2 weeks ago, Howard has seen limited floor time, averaging just 21.6 minutes per game in eight appearances.

He's performed well in that curbed action, though, averaging 13.8 points on 66.2 percent shooting to go with nine rebounds and just under two combined blocks and steals per contest, including three sraight double-doubles. Along with the consistently strong play of MVP candidate James Harden, Howard's recent uptick in form has given a Rockets club that continues to fight tooth-and-nail in a battle for the No. 2 spot in the Western Conference playoff hierarchy hope that, despite the other damaging injuries they've sustained of late, they've still got a real chance of advancing past the opening round of the playoffs for the first time since 2009, and past the conference semifinals for the first time since 1997.

News sport : Did Columbus store accidentally reveal Browns' new jerseys?

The Cleveland Browns' big logo and color change reveal was a dud because it was basically the same old thing, just a different shade.

But they promised a uniform reveal with it on April 14, and what looks like the new Browns jerseys somehow ended up on display at a store in Columbus, according to Bottlegate.com (h/t Northeast Ohio Media Group).

Are these legit? Take a look:

The jerseys didn't last long on the shelves (Whoops!):

Like anything on the Internet, make sure to have the appropriate skepticism if these are real. But if it's a hoax, it really is quite an elaborate one. The photos don't look doctored, although you never know. The jerseys look like photos that were reportedly leaked of the new uniforms too (again a h/t to the Northeast Ohio Media Group):

Also, here was new Browns receiver Brian Hartline's Instagram photo of what appears to be the Browns' new helmets:

If this is all an elaborate fake out, well, it was thorough. We'll find out soon enough.

If it's not? The Browns uniforms look pretty slick. The "Cleveland" above the numbers is old school, and very college. In a good way. Cleveland fans will be rushing out to buy one of the new jerseys, assuming this is what the new look will be ... when stores are allowed to keep the jerseys on the shelves, that is.

News sport : Miami commit visits Florida State, throws up 'U' on FSU logo (Photo)

Al Blades Jr. is only 15 years old, but the class of 2018 cornerback is already verbally committed to play for Miami, where his late father, Al, and uncles, Bennie and Brian, played.

Despite his verbal commitment to play for the Hurricanes, other schools are still recruiting him, including Florida State. Blades took a trip to Tallahassee over the weekend and showed his pledge to the Hurricanes is still strong by throwing up the “U” on the Seminoles’ logo.

That’s a bold move by the youngster that’ll surely make Hurricanes fans feel good.

Miami hasn’t had a whole lot to feel good about in this storied rivalry as the Seminoles have won the last five matchups, including a 30-26 nailbiter in November.

The Seminoles and Hurricanes will square off next year on Oct. 10 at Doak Campbell Stadium.
