News sport : Oklahoma quarterback competition is still wide open

Apr 11, 2015; Norman, OK, USA; Oklahoma Sooners quarterback Baker Mayfield (6) looks to pass during the spring football game at Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium. Red wins 20-7 over White. Mandatory Credit: Rob Ferguson-USA TODAY Sports With spring practice in the books, Oklahoma’s quarterback competition is still wide open. All four candidates – Trevor Knight, Baker Mayfield, Cody Thomas and Justice Hansen – are still in the running, and Saturday’s spring game didn’t make things any clearer for head coach Bob Stoops and new offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley.

“We’re gonna let this thing go until the fall,” Riley said, per ESPN.com. “It’s gonna be a great battle. There’s not enough separation.”

All four candidates saw their fair share of snaps in front of more than 30,000 at Memorial Stadium. As with any spring game, there were positives and negatives.

“They’ve had a nice spring again in their reads and what they’re doing with the ball,” Stoops said. “I think they were definitely putting some balls up that when it’s practice it’s no big deal, but when you’re in game-type situations it’s a bigger deal.”

Stoops said the forced passes and interceptions were not a reflection of the group’s solid play throughout the spring.

“They’ll learn from it,” Stoops said. “This isn’t indicative of what I’ve seen all spring. I’ve been pleased with what they’ve been doing all spring.”

Three of the candidates – Knight, Mayfield and Thomas – have a solid base of regular season experience, but each turned the ball over on Saturday.

Knight, who threw for 78 yards and an interception on 6-of-13 throwing on Saturday, burst onto the scene toward the end of his redshirt freshman season, especially with a standout Sugar Bowl performance against Alabama, but had a disappointing sophomore campaign.

Thomas started three games after Knight was injured (he returned for the Citus Bowl) and completed just 46 percent of his passes while throwing two touchdowns and four interceptions. Thomas completed 5-of-12 passes for 83 yards and an interception on Saturday.

Mayfield threw for 2,315 yards, 12 touchdowns and nine interceptions as a true freshman at Texas Tech in 2013 before transferring to the Sooners. He showed flashes by completing 10-of-13 passes for 176 yards and a touchdown, but he also threw two interceptions.

Hansen, a redshirt freshman, is the dark horse candidate of the group. He was 5-of-5 for 70 yards on the afternoon.

This will be one to keep an eye on as we inch toward the fall.

News sport : Derrick Rose compares his most recent surgery rehab to 'Hell'

Yes, it was against the Philadelphia 76ers, and yes, the Sixers were playing without their best player in Nerlens Noel, but the Chicago Bulls looked great on Saturday evening. Not only did the team win to keep pace in the race for the third seed, but Derrick Rose also easily had his best game since his return from knee surgery earlier in the week.

[Follow Dunks Don't Lie on Tumblr: The best slams from all of basketball]

Rose scored 22 points on 19 shots, he dished eight assists and pulled in six rebounds. Most importantly, the bounce appeared to be back.

Speaking to reporters prior to Monday’s important game against the Brooklyn Nets, Rose credited his six-week rehab as the reason for the bounce, while giving us some insight into what probably was a rather dark winter for the 2011 MVP:

"Hell," Rose said when asked what the last six weeks were like. "Because you got to do rehab over again. Waking up at 7:30 every day and being there two hours before practice, beating everybody to the training room when you arrive to a city. You have to do two or three workouts every day. So the game, that’s kind of easy. For sure it’s easy."

The last two years have not been easy for Derrick Rose.

We’re nearing the two-year anniversary of Rose’s initial left ACL tear, an injury that knocked him out of what could have been his first championship season (the Bulls tied for the best record in the NBA in 201-12), and one that laid him out for the entirety of 2012-13. Many criticized Rose for sitting out a whole season, noting that other ACL tear sufferers had returned to action weeks earlier than Rose, but Derrick Rose was not and will never be a typical NBA player – ex-MVPs aren’t usually put into that particular position, they’re not allowed on-court baby steps.

Rose’s 2013-14 comeback was cut short due to a torn right meniscus just ten games into the season, a season that saw Rose struggle mightily on both ends of the court. Meniscus tears often lead to persistent knee pain and follow-up surgeries (Russell Westbrook and Eric Bledsoe have undergone several over the last two years), which made Derrick Rose’s operation in late February as expected as it was frightening.

The point guard is returning to action with just a few games to go before the regular season ends, in a desperate bid to establish some form of continuity with a Bulls rotation that is healthy on paper (forward/center Joakim Noah will play each game, but he is clearly far from one hundred percent). Monday’s game will mark the penultimate contest of the team’s regular season, and even the relative familiarity of the playoff setup might not provide the Bulls with the certainty they need to make an impact in the East.

The dark part is over, though. At least Rose has that.

News sport : Anderson Silva pushes to compete for Brazil in taekwondo at the 2016 Olympics

When the Olympic Summer games head to Rio de Janeiro next summer, Brazil could have former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva helping its medal count.

That is, if "Spider" has anything to say about.

Silva, who is 5th-degree black belt in taekwondo, penned a letter to the president of the Brazilian Taekwondo Federation (CBTKD), Carlos Fernandes, expressing his desire to compete for the national team in the 2016 Summer Games.

"Everybody knows that for a high-performance athlete, the Olympic games is the dream of every athlete, and it wouldn't be different with me," Silva wrote on the CBTKD webpage. "It will be a great pleasure to be part of this golden team, which has a serious institution, commanded by president Carlos Fernandes, who honors us very much, along with his team. Therefore, I wish to represent taekwondo and Brazil in the Olympic games in 2016. With all my esteem, strength and honor."

Whether or not Silva actually represents Brazil is anyone's guess at this point; however, Silva is, in fact, meeting with President Fernandes soon to discuss, as Fernandes has stated, this "magnificent possibility."

Silva began his taekwondo training at just 14 years old. Since that time, he used it to become one of the most heralded strikers the sport of mixed martial arts has ever seen. Silva, 39, is currently suspended by the Nevada State Athletic Commission for failing drug tests before and after his fight with Nick Diaz in January at UFC 183.

Silva has expressed interest in a potential Olympic run in previous years, but the talk was quickly shut down as Silva focused on his MMA career.

Testing for the Olympics is conducted by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and is much more stringent than the tests he faced during his MMA career. If Silva is looking to put his PED debacle in MMA to rest, a clean and authoritative run in Rio may just help in restoring his championship legacy with fight fans.

News sport : Six important NBA veterans are gearing for make their playoff debuts

On Monday, Boston Celtics guard Isaiah Thomas won the NBA’s Eastern Conference Player of the Week award for his 22.7-point, 5.7-assist performance over three games – all Boston wins. His work helped keep the C’s alive in the Eastern playoff hunt, as Boston will enter Monday night with the seventh seed in the East, with Isaiah offering stuff like this along the way:

Every aspect of this – Isaiah Thomas working as the East’s best player for a week (for the second, award-winning time this season), him doing it for Boston, the Celtics actually potentially making the postseason – are a bit charming and surprising.

Just as charming was Thomas’s quote following the team’s win over the Cavaliers on Sunday, as reported by Jackie MacMullan of ESPN Boston:

Asked how much it would mean to him to make the playoffs Thomas answered, "For me personally? It's everything. In my NBA career, I haven't been to the playoffs. It's something I want to experience. I heard it's fun, it's exciting.''

It is exciting! The playoffs start this weekend, and Thomas is the unlikely go-to guy for his third team in 12 months. Thomas, the last man selected in the 2011 NBA draft, missed the playoffs during his first three seasons with Sacramento and was well on his way toward missing it in his first season with the Phoenix Suns when he was dealt to Boston in February. The Celtics have won eight of 19 games since he moved to Boston, hardly a knockout record but enough to possibly make Thomas a postseason attendee.

There are a few other playoff rookies rolling around as spring sets in. Let’s take a look at a few.

Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love, Cleveland Cavaliers

Irving, just as charmingly as Thomas, offered this nationally televised question all the way back on Halloween:

Irving’s numbers in his first season as the lead guard on a championship (much less “playoff”) contender are remarkably similar to the stats he was putting up on the three previous terrible Cavalier teams he had to work with. At 22 points and five assists a game, Irving remains a remarkably no-muss/no-fuss scoring point guard. His assists have dropped slightly this season with LeBron James often manning the offense, but his three-point shooting has sparked up to 41 percent. His defense has improved to the ranks of the passable.

The same can’t be said, sadly, for Kevin Love.

[Follow Dunks Don't Lie on Tumblr: The best slams from all of basketball]

The former Timberwolves All-Star has seen his scoring average decline by nearly ten points per game to 16.5 a contest, and if his 9.9 rebounds per game average sustains he will finish with (just barely) single digit caroms per contest for the first time since his rookie year. That year saw Love badly underutilized by coach Randy Wittman for the first chunk of the season, and while Cavs coach David Blatt has been working Love 34 minutes a night, he’s often the afterthought in Cleveland’s top five offense.

That’s a shame, but as it often was for Chris Bosh in Miami it may not get in the way of a Cavaliers championship. It hasn’t been the easiest regular season for Love, but after missing the postseason for the first six years of his career, he’ll take it.

Nikola Mirotic, Chicago Bulls

To call the Bulls forward a “rookie” is almost disingenuous, he’s an NBA rookie by the letter of the law, but the 23-year old has been playing professionally for six years now. To refer to Mirotic as a “postseason rookie” is pushing it just as much, as he’s won three Spanish League titles with Real Madrid, earning the King’s Cup MVP for his work in 2014.

Mirotic will probably not be the rookie of the year this season, for good reason, but he is an important cog in a Chicago machine that is hurriedly scurrying to make sense of its suddenly-healthy rotation as it attempts to stand up as a clear threat in the East. Mirotic, averaging ten points and five rebounds in only 20 minutes a game (offering significant crunch time contributions along the way), needs to be the straw that stirs Chicago’s drink.

Isaiah Thomas, Boston Celtics

Thomas is up to 19.5 points per game with his new team, he’s yet to start a game with Boston but acts as their go-to force down the stretch. The Celtics weren’t supposed to make the playoffs this year, but the team is currently a game up and working with the seventh seed as the eighth-place Brooklyn Nets gear up for a contest against the Bulls on Monday evening.

Ironically, Thomas’ Celtics are in the same position as his former club in Phoenix – trying to sneak into the lower reaches of the playoff bracket. The disappointing Suns, who dealt Thomas in February, will miss the postseason for the fourth straight season.

Michael Carter-Williams, Milwaukee Bucks

Carter-Williams could not have seen this coming. Nobody should have seen this coming.

The second year guard was supposed to ride out yet another losing season with the lowly Philadelphia 76ers, a franchise that tanked both this year and last on its way toward acquiring a cadre of high end draft picks. Dealing the 2013-14 Rookie of the Year to Milwaukee less than a year after he earned that award was shocking enough, what made the upturn even more remarkable is the idea that Carter-Williams would somehow improve his playoff potential by joining the Bucks – the only team to turn in a worse record than last year’s Sixers.

The Bucks have surprised, though Carter-Williams has struggled to lead the team at times. Averaging 13.7 points, 5.7 assists and 3.9 boards in under 31 minutes a contest, MCW has watched as the Bucks have turned in a 10-17 record since the deal (9-14 with him in the lineup). Carter-Williams has looked fantastic over his last three games, however, hitting for 20.3 points on 61 percent shooting with 6.7 assists a contest as Milwaukee secured its playoff status with a 2-1 stretch and near-win over the LeBron-led Cavaliers.

Anthony Davis, New Orleans Pelicans

This one isn’t a given, but it’s certainly something we’d like to see.

Entering Monday’s contest with the Minnesota Timberwolves, the Pelicans are tied with the Oklahoma City Thunder for the final spot in the West. NOLA, however, owns the tiebreaker over OKC thanks in no small part to the brilliance of Davis. The Pelicans aren’t on national television as much as the Thunder, which means that a giant chunk of basketball fandom hasn’t seen much of Davis thus far. They may not know that the third-year forward/center is on the verge of turning in one of the highest Player Efficiency Ratings in NBA history, or that his 24 points per game (on 53.7-percent shooting) has as much to do with his lights-out perimeter shooting as it does his throwdown dunks.

Davis also contributes a league-leading 2.9 blocks and 1.5 steals along with 10.2 rebounds. Had he played more games this season (he could finish the year at just 68), those who looked the other way with their MVP votes would have a hard time explaining themselves.

And we might, for the first time, get to see him under the klieg lights in late April. Such a deal.

News sport : Tom Brady throws out first pitch at Red Sox opener, doesn't do so great

The Boston Red Sox, with no trophy of their own to hoist this year, invited Tom Brady and Bill Belichick of the New England Patriots to star in their Fenway Park opener. Pats owner Robert Kraft and president Jonathan Kraft were there too, carrying Super Bowl trophies for good measure.

[Yahoo Sports Fantasy Baseball: Sign up and join a league today!]

Brady was tasked with throwing out the first pitch, which shouldn't have been too hard, since you know, he throws balls for a living and is generally considered to be among the best in his profession. He was also drafted as a catcher by the Montreal Expos. So first pitch, no problemo, right Tom?

Well, about that. Here's what happened:

David Ortiz was able to dig out the wild first pitch, so things weren't too terrible. Nobody's going to be comparing Brady to 50 Cent or anything like that. Brady did better in the batting cage, smacking lob balls thrown to him by Pedro Martinez.

Remember kids, Tom Brady isn't all-the-way perfect. He bounced a first pitch at Fenway Park. We can always hold that against him.

News sport : Dwight Howard will not face charges in Atlanta child abuse investigation

Dwight Howard takes a free throw against the Washington Wizards on March 29, 2015. (Ned Dishman/NBAE/Getty Images) Houston Rockets center Dwight Howard will not face charges of child abuse in connection with an investigation into alleged physical disciplining of his then-6-year-old son, Braylon.

[Follow Dunks Don't Lie on Tumblr: The best slams from all of basketball]

Royce Reed, Braylon's mother, filed a complaint against Howard in August alleging that Howard had whipped their son with a belt. A spokesperson for the Florida Department of Children and Families told TMZ in November that the investigation was "being closed with no substantiated findings of physical injuries." A subsequent TMZ report, however, indicated that the doctor who examined Braylon's injuries reported them as being consistent with a history "of being struck with a belt numerous times by his father."

While the allegation were reported in Florida, the alleged abuse in question was said to have taken place in Georgia. Following the TMZ reports, authorities in Georgia re-opened their investigation into child abuse claims against Howard. The 29-year-old center was not arrested or charged with any crime as authorities investigated the claims.

On Monday, nearly five months after the resumption of investigation, Atlanta police announced that they will not press charges against the eight-time All-Star, according to Mark Berman of KRIV-TV FOX 26 in Houston:

"I can confirm we are not moving forward with charges in this case," said Sgt. Gregory Lyon, in an email to FOX 26 Sports.

Howard's attorney, David Oscar Markus, is pleased with the decision.

"We are gratified that the Atlanta Police Department, after fully examining the frivolous allegations against Dwight Howard, has closed the case and decided not to proceed with charges," said Markus in a statement to FOX 26 Sports.

"Dwight Howard will continue to act in the best interest of his children and do whatever is necessary to protect their welfare."

Howard filed a motion in November seeking sole custody of Braylon that continues to wend its way through the courts, according to Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle.

Howard has struggled with injuries this season, missing 37 games with an ailing right knee. Since returning to action 2 1/2 weeks ago, Howard has seen limited floor time, averaging just 21.6 minutes per game in eight appearances.

He's performed well in that curbed action, though, averaging 13.8 points on 66.2 percent shooting to go with nine rebounds and just under two combined blocks and steals per contest, including three sraight double-doubles. Along with the consistently strong play of MVP candidate James Harden, Howard's recent uptick in form has given a Rockets club that continues to fight tooth-and-nail in a battle for the No. 2 spot in the Western Conference playoff hierarchy hope that, despite the other damaging injuries they've sustained of late, they've still got a real chance of advancing past the opening round of the playoffs for the first time since 2009, and past the conference semifinals for the first time since 1997.

News sport : Did Columbus store accidentally reveal Browns' new jerseys?

The Cleveland Browns' big logo and color change reveal was a dud because it was basically the same old thing, just a different shade.

But they promised a uniform reveal with it on April 14, and what looks like the new Browns jerseys somehow ended up on display at a store in Columbus, according to Bottlegate.com (h/t Northeast Ohio Media Group).

Are these legit? Take a look:

The jerseys didn't last long on the shelves (Whoops!):

Like anything on the Internet, make sure to have the appropriate skepticism if these are real. But if it's a hoax, it really is quite an elaborate one. The photos don't look doctored, although you never know. The jerseys look like photos that were reportedly leaked of the new uniforms too (again a h/t to the Northeast Ohio Media Group):

Also, here was new Browns receiver Brian Hartline's Instagram photo of what appears to be the Browns' new helmets:

If this is all an elaborate fake out, well, it was thorough. We'll find out soon enough.

If it's not? The Browns uniforms look pretty slick. The "Cleveland" above the numbers is old school, and very college. In a good way. Cleveland fans will be rushing out to buy one of the new jerseys, assuming this is what the new look will be ... when stores are allowed to keep the jerseys on the shelves, that is.

News sport : Miami commit visits Florida State, throws up 'U' on FSU logo (Photo)

Al Blades Jr. is only 15 years old, but the class of 2018 cornerback is already verbally committed to play for Miami, where his late father, Al, and uncles, Bennie and Brian, played.

Despite his verbal commitment to play for the Hurricanes, other schools are still recruiting him, including Florida State. Blades took a trip to Tallahassee over the weekend and showed his pledge to the Hurricanes is still strong by throwing up the “U” on the Seminoles’ logo.

That’s a bold move by the youngster that’ll surely make Hurricanes fans feel good.

Miami hasn’t had a whole lot to feel good about in this storied rivalry as the Seminoles have won the last five matchups, including a 30-26 nailbiter in November.

The Seminoles and Hurricanes will square off next year on Oct. 10 at Doak Campbell Stadium.

News sport : Blazers' LaMarcus Aldridge (left foot sprain) out Monday, opening door for Thunder

LaMarcus Aldridge will once again be sidelined by a foot sprain. (Cameron Browne/NBAE/Getty Images) You can't say everything's going the Oklahoma City Thunder's way right now — not after losing the reigning Most Valuable Player and their most important defender to injuries that have turned a year that began with championship aspirations into one in which OKC's scrambling just to make it into the postseason. In the micro sense, though, it's fair to say that OKC's having a pretty good Monday.

First, the NBA announced its decision to rescind the technical foul assessed to Russell Westbrook in Sunday's loss to the Indiana Pacers, meaning Oklahoma City's All-Star point guard will be available to suit up in a game the Thunder desperately need to win to keep their playoff hopes alive. Then, Oklahoma City's Monday opponent, the Portland Trail Blazers, announced that they'd be entering battle without one of their All-Stars:

[Follow Dunks Don't Lie on Tumblr: The best slams from all of basketball]

This will mark Portland's second straight game without leading scorer and rebounder LaMarcus Aldridge. The power forward missed Saturday's loss to the Utah Jazz, a defeat that ensured the Blazers — who are guaranteed a top-four playoff seed by virtue of winning the Northwest Division, and are locked into it being the No. 4 spot due to having a worse record than five other Western Conference squads — will not have home-court advantage in the opening round of the playoffs, as they cannot finish with a higher win total than any of their potential Round 1 opponents. The San Antonio Spurs, Los Angeles Clippers, Memphis Grizzlies and Houston Rockets all have at least 54 wins; Portland sits at 51 victories with just two games remaining on their schedule.

From the Blazers' perspective, much like the decision not to send the banged-up trio of Aldridge, Nicolas Batum and Chris Kaman cross-country last week for a make-up game against the Brooklyn Nets, the choice to keep Aldridge on the sidelines seems like one aimed at giving one of the players most important to their chances of making it out of Round 1 as much rest as possible before the playoffs start without ruling him out completely. From Erik Gundersen of the Columbian:

It’s a new injury for Aldridge, who has been plagued by injuries on both hands this season.

“He had an MRI [Friday] and there was soreness there,” head coach Terry Stotts said. “So we thought it was best to hold him out and let him recover [...]”

Stotts said that Aldridge the foot started bothering him after the Golden State game and while the results were negative he still had some soreness. Stotts said he didn’t have an idea for when Aldridge would come back or whether the injury had been nagging him prior to feeling soreness after the game in Oakland.

“I think it’s good to maintain a competitive edge,” Stotts said when asked whether he’d like “I’d like for him to get some minutes in before the playoffs start.”

Scott Brooks and company certainly won't complain too much about not seeing the sweet-shooting 6-foot-11 forward in the Blazers' lineup. Aldridge torched Oklahoma City to the tune of 27 points, 9.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game in three meetings against the Thunder this season, with Portland winning all three matchups.

Factor in the rest of the Blazers' missing pieces — two-way linchpin Wesley Matthews, lost for the season to a torn Achilles tendon; his replacement, Arron Afflalo, sidelined by a right shoulder strain; reserve wing and occasional stretch-four Dorell Wright, still working his way back from a broken left hand — and the fact that Batum is still playing with a sore back, and this looks like about as promising an opportunity as possible for a Thunder team that no longer controls its own destiny in the race for the eighth and final playoff spot out West.

Oklahoma City must finish one game ahead of the New Orleans Pelicans in order to leapfrog Anthony Davis' crew for the No. 8 seed, since the Pelicans hold the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Thunder after winning the season series between the two teams three games to one. The Thunder host Portland on Monday and travel to the Twin Cities on Wednesday to wrap up the regular season against the Minnesota Timberwolves, while the Pelicans head to Minnesota on Monday before finishing up by hosting the white-hot San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday. Oklahoma City needs some help, then, but must also hold up its end of the bargain. How kind of the Blazers, then, to help improve the Thunder's chances of helping themselves.

News sport : Mike Budenholzer thinks Danny Ferry should be credited as Executive of the Year

Danny Ferry is still the lead basketball executive of the Atlanta Hawks. He hasn’t been on record in the press since August, and he’s been on an indefinite leave of absence since September. In re-framing a reported Cleveland Cavalier scout’s thoughts on the impact of Luol Deng’s heritage as it contributed to his value as a person and player, he showed what we called “an abject lack of leadership” some seven months ago, prior to wondering when Ferry would be fired.

Danny Ferry is also the lead architect of the Eastern Conference’s best team, a 60-win juggernaut that has thrilled previously-indifferent potential Hawk fans with their entertaining brand of offensive basketball, and stout defensive presence. For this, the Hawks would usually nominate Ferry as their representative as the league’s Executive of the Year, even though Ferry’s relaying of the comments on Luol Deng were more damaging and outright baffling than any botched trade or bad free agent signing.

As a result, the Hawks instead nominated Mike Budenholzer, the team’s (very good) head coach and working general manager in Ferry’s absence. Budenholzer, hired by Ferry in 2013, does not think he should have received such a nomination.

From the Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s Chris Vivlamore:

With Ferry on an indefinite leave of absence, Budenholzer was the Hawks nomination for the NBA’s Executive of the Year award the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Saturday. Budenholzer was named head of basketball operations in September.

“Anyone who has followed the Hawks for the last two or three years knows that Danny Ferry is the executive who is most responsible for the makeup of our team,” Budenholzer said Sunday before the Hawks played the Wizards. “Danny is responsible for me being here. Our team is in a good place. I’m very grateful to work with such good players and with such a great staff.”

Ferry took the leave following the discovery of racially insensitive remarks about free-agent target Luol Deng during a June conference call with team ownership and management. At that time, CEO Steve Koonin elevated Budenholzer to lead the basketball operations and make final decisions.

“Danny Ferry is the executive who is more responsible for the makeup of” this top seed in the East, that is one hundred percent accurate. He may have inherited Al Horford, but Ferry also traded for and signed all manner of helpers on the Hawks’ loaded roster. That Atlanta has been able to brave the storm of incessant nagging injuries on its way to 60 wins (or more!) is because of Ferry’s personnel work, and his hire of Budenholzer – many analysts’ leading candidate for Coach of the Year.

Danny Ferry should not be the Executive of the Year as some odd form of punishment or to save face, however. He should not be the Executive of the Year because he made some terrible, fireable offenses last summer in both thinking and also re-framing the scout’s miserable comments were in any way something to consider as the team approached a decision on paying for Luol Deng’s services.

[Follow Dunks Don't Lie on Tumblr: The best slams from all of basketball]

Deng (who went on to sign with the Miami Heat, though not because of the remarks as he was unaware of the comments at the time) has forgiven Ferry and we all know that Danny Ferry is not a racist, but that’s not the point. Ferry is lucky to have his job, no matter how impactful the Paul Millsap deal is or how successful the Joe Johnson trade was.

Danny Ferry should absolutely be credited for his work with the Atlanta Hawks. He took a middling, overpaid group that played a batch of uninspiring basketball in front of listless crowds and turned the team into a contender. He was the first GM to commit to Mike Budenholzer, who weirdly had to wait a decade to emerge from the San Antonio assistant ranks. The team may end up slightly under the cap this summer even after re-signing Millsap and DeMarre Carroll, and there is still a chance that the Hawks could end up with a lottery pick as a result of the Johnson trade.

That’s on Danny Ferry’s record. What’s also on record is the time he thought it would be appropriate to relay that an employee from the Cavaliers organization thought that “has a little African in him” belonged on a scouting report.

Sometimes people screw up, and during this year’s Finals or NBA draft (a Finals turn the Hawks could take part in, and a draft that could see Atlanta picking up a future star) the team may attempt to quietly announce Ferry’s return to day-to-day duties in time for the offseason. If he wasn’t fired last September, he’s certainly not going to be fired this summer – that was the case even before Atlanta’s surprising run to the top. Many are dismayed by this, but it wouldn’t be the worst transgression.

Danny Ferry is not the NBA’s Executive of the Year, though. Great executives don’t let years worth of fantastic transactions be completely besmirched by, again, a move that showed an absolute absence of leadership.

News sport : Barry Bonds says you should be happy when A-Rod reaches 660 homers

Alex Rodriguez is five homers away from tying the great Willie Mays for fourth on the all-time list with 660. Just what happens after that ball flies over the fence might be one of the season's best dramas. The New York Yankees are acting like the milestone doesn't exist — partially because it will help avoid paying A-Rod's $6 million "milestone" bonus.

If he's at home, Yankees fans will probably cheer A-Rod, since they've given him warm receptions thus far. If he's on the road, you can expect a chorus of boos. We'll wait and see what sort of media coverage it gets, whether folks act like it's as real as spring-training stats or they give it "milestone" coverage.

[Yahoo Sports Fantasy Baseball: Sign up and join a league today!]

Despite all that, you know who will be happy for A-Rod? Another shamed slugger — Barry Bonds, who is a particularly interesting person in this matter because Mays is his godfather, A-Rod is a recent pupil of his and, like Rodriguez, he knows what it's like to chase a milestone without the public's support.

Bonds spoke to USA Today's Bob Nightengale about the chase for 660 and his comments were certainly polarizing. Bonds says everybody — you, me, the Yankees, etc. — should be happy for A-Rod. Something tells us not every baseball fan is going to heed Bonds' word.

"My godfather means the world to me. I love him to a T,'' Bonds told USA TODAY Sports in an hour-long telephone interview, "but when Alex hits No. 660, I'll be happy for him. Willie will be happy for him. Everybody should be happy for him.

"Any time anybody in the game does something that's a great accomplishment, the game of baseball should celebrate that. No matter what. Baseball is benefiting from that person's hard work, so baseball should at least celebrate."

But it won't. And neither will the Yankees.

"Why the hate?" Bonds said. "Why hate on something you're paying to see? I don't understand it. He's entertaining us. I wish life wasn't like that."

Bonds and A-Rod, circa 2007. (AP)

Why the hate? Barry, you know why the hate. You've been dealing with that question yourself since 2007. While Bonds is talking about A-Rod here, you have to figure he's talking about himself too. He further told USA Today:

"This guy is not running for president of the United States," Bonds said. "He's not running for commissioner. We're not running for political office. We're just ballplayers. We're not God. We're imperfect people. We're human beings."

So are fans. They'll react from their heart, for better or worse. Some people will call A-Rod's spot on all-time list hollow (as is their right) and others will talk about how great of a talent he is, PED issues aside (also their right).

But as Bonds knows well, there will be no shortage of opinions.

News sport : Vandy's 'Minute To Win It' is the best game we've seen this spring (Video)

Vanderbilt coach Derek Mason participates in the team's Minute To Win It competition.

OK, we admit it, we handed out the Video of the Day award just a bit prematurely. And for that, we apologize.

While Northwestern’s Dizzy Bat Contest is a great, great thing, Vanderbilt’s "Minute To Win It" competition is absolutely hilarious.

Few teams need offseason bonding more than a Vanderbilt squad that is still learning under second-year coach Derek Mason. The Commodores were 3-9 in Mason’s first season after winning nine games in each of the previous two years under former coach James Franklin.

And nothing bonds a team together better than ridiculous challenges that include kicking shoes onto a table, stacking bolts off the end of a dowel and eating Oreos in an unconventional fashion.

Looks like Vanderbilt is having a lot more fun during the offseason than it did during the year.

News sport : J.J. Watt's 5-foot-1 inch box jump is pretty ridiculous (Video)

I know we've seen the whole "J.J. Watt has a ridiculous box jump" thing before, but I'm here to say that I'm not going to tire of it anytime soon.

Watt, who should have won NFL MVP last season after having an all-time dominant season with the Houston Texans, says he weighs 293 pounds. And he's one of the league's best athletes, which is a reason nobody can block him.

So he set up a 61-inch platform to jump on, to prove his ridiculous explosiveness.

Watt was pretty fired up (and remembered to plug his new sponsor, Reebok), probably because he had been working on a 5-foot jump and it hadn't worked out so well.

I'd say it worked out a lot worse for his spotter.

But the jump is a good reminder that it won't be too long until we're watching Watt do unfathomable things on a football field again.
