News sport : Tevin Coleman played 7 games in 2014 with a broken foot

Former Indiana running back Tevin Coleman was playing hurt in 2014 But you're forgiven if you didn't realize he was given how well he performed.

According to Bleacher Report, Coleman played the final seven games of 2014 with a broken sesamoid bone in his right foot. Coleman ran for 2,036 yards last year and, as the math works out, 1,195 of those yards came while Coleman had the injury.

How crazy is that?

Coleman apparently first hurt the foot against North Texas in early October. Yet running backs coach Deland McCullough told BR that "He downplayed it completely to me."

The injury was initially diagnosed as turf tue.

From Bleacher Report:

Turf toe and a sesamoid fracture are closely related injuries. Turf toe, an innocuous name for an injury that can be excruciating for athletes, is soft tissue damage around the big toe joint, usually caused by hyperextension. The sesamoids are tiny seed-shaped bones in the knuckle of the big toe that act as "pulleys" for the tendons in the foot. Fracture the sesamoid, and you get symptoms similar to an acute case of turf toe: swelling, some limited motion and pain whenever you try to use your toe for something like running, cutting, planting or walking.

With three weeks to go the break was diagnosed. But since there was no risk of making it worse, Coleman kept playing. And playing well.

Coleman's 2014 was easily one of the best seasons of any player last year. He was the offensive focal point on a team that couldn't keep a quarterback healthy and had a struggling defense. As defenses kept keying on him, he kept running away from them. Two of his three biggest rushing totals came in the last three games of the season.

And the first sentence of the last paragraph doesn't even take into account Coleman's foot injury. When it's considered, it's hard not to wonder how many Heisman votes Coleman would have gotten if the injury was widely known.

News sport : West Virginia DL Kyle Rose arrested in bar incident

West Virginia defensive lineman Kyle Rose is facing four misdemeanors after an incident at a bar on Sunday.

Rose allegedly struck a police officer and was eventually tased early Sunday morning. According to police, Rose had said he was drinking.

From MetroNews.com:

The incident occurred around 2:30 a.m. at Bent Willey’s bar on Chestnut Street. Security informed police that Rose had been tossed out of the bar earlier but returned and shoved a bouncer upon re-entering. Police ultimately took the 6-foot-4, 294-pound Rose to the floor after he allegedly shoved an officer in the face. The senior nose guard subsequently continued resisting officers’ attempts to put him in handcuffs and had to be tased, police said.

Rose is facing charges of public intoxication, obstructing an officer, battery on an officer and disorderly conduct. He was released on bond.

The redshirt senior in 2015 played in all 13 of West Virginia's games last season and had 35 tackles and a sack. Coach Dana Holgorsen released a brief statement about discipline for Rose.

"We are aware of the situation and the matter will be handled internally," Holgorsen said.

Last chance saloon for Liverpool

Liverpool face Blackburn Rovers in an FA Cup replay at Ewood Park on back of defeats to Arsenal and Manchester United in the Premier League.

|||

On the day of his arrival at Liverpool in June 2012, Brendan Rodgers struck an emotive theme, telling stories of afternoons at his grand-father’s house in County Antrim spent watching the great Liverpool teams of the 1970s and ’80s competing in domestic cup finals.

Rodgers has, it must be said, always had an understanding of the importance of domestic silverware to the club.

Tonight at Ewood Park, he must only hope his modern Liverpool side can raise themselves above recent modest levels and take another step towards a Wembley final that could yet go some way to rescuing his season.

Speaking ahead of the replay at Blackburn, Rodgers would not go so far as to say the FA Cup could save this campaign for Liverpool. He cannot be seen to be writing off his team’s top-four Barclays Premier League hopes just yet. Nevertheless, an FA Cup final would be more than useful, for all kinds of reasons.

‘I don’t want to go down the route of saying that it saves our season,’ said Rodgers. ‘Our objective at the start, though, was to win a trophy.

‘So I think if we didn’t get in the top four and we didn’t have a trophy this year, we would be disappointed. I think certainly the FA Cup would give us a great boost as a team with lots of young players and players coming into the club.

‘That’s the expectancy we want. We want to be able to be challenging every year.

‘That was the key thing for me, to get the group challenging at the top end of the league and for trophies. The FA Cup would mark a good step forward for us.’

Coming towards the final part of a season that saw Liverpool start badly, improve markedly and then disappoint once again, the problems facing their manager are familiar.

Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez scored 55 club goals between them last season but this time round the club’s top scorers are Raheem Sterling and Steven Gerrard with 10 each. Meanwhile at the back, familiar failings re-emerged in the 4-1 defeat at Arsenal on Saturday as Liverpool defended poorly and were left asking questions — for the first time in a while — of their goalkeeper Simon Mignolet.

Asked if a defensive repeat would see Liverpool lose to a Championship side tonight, Rodgers said: ‘I think so, yes. We didn’t defend at Arsenal. We didn’t defend the ball well enough, we gave the ball away in poor areas for two of the four goals.

‘Over the last few months we defended really well, we had six clean sheets against good opponents and defended very well away from home.

‘The minute you come off it and if you come off it against good players you can get punished and that is what happened.’

Worryingly for Rodgers (below), his best two defenders — Martin Skrtel and Emre Can — are suspended for tonight’s match, along with captain Gerrard.

There remains a genuine desire to reach May’s Wembley final in order to let Gerrard leave the club in memorable fashion, something that was outlined by midfielder Joe Allen last week.

‘There is no getting away from that,’ said Allen. ‘That is something that drives us. We all feel we owe Steven a lot.’

If it is to happen, Liverpool must overcome what should be a stiff challenge from Gary Bowyer’s team. Blackburn did more that frustrate Liverpool in the 0-0 draw at Anfield exactly a month ago. They could have won and we can expect them to again trouble a defence that may have to feature two of Rodgers’ weakest links, Kolo Toure and Dejan Lovren.

Certainly Liverpool must lift themselves tonight if they are to prosper. The fact that they have already overcome a similar challenge in round four — winning a replay at Bolton — will perhaps encourage them but that was a Liverpool team trending upwards in form. Currently, there is a sense that the opposite is happening.

The obvious beneficiary of all this is the grand old competition itself. With Arsenal, Aston Villa and Reading already in the last four, the FA Cup is guaranteed to find itself with semi-finalists who desperately want to lift the trophy.

Deep down, the FA will long for an Arsenal-Liverpool final. That will evoke some classic memories involving the likes of Charlie George and Michael Owen.

Rodgers would surely give much for the opportunity to avenge last weekend’s league defeat on such a grand stage.

‘There is everything still to play for and we can still make it a really successful season,’ he said.

Whether those words were spoken in hope or expectation, only he will really know. – Daily Mail

City - from champs to chumps

This has been a lamentable defence of the title by Manchester City, just like their previous defence of the Premier League.

|||

If Manuel Pellegrini leaves the Barclays Premier League at the end of this season — and it is by no means certain — then he will leave behind barely a trace.

Inside Manchester City, the Chilean has always provided a welcome contrast to the emotional stresses of life epitomised by his predecessor Roberto Mancini but — on the field and across the landscape of English football — Pellegrini has made the shallowest of footprints.

Progress at the Etihad Stadium has in recent years been slight. Indeed, you could say there has been none, particularly in relation to money spent. At City, however, the fact is that the identity of the manager represents only a small part of the problem.

As reported in Sportsmail after City’s defeat in Barcelona last month, there is no particular desire at the club to sack Pellegrini. More poor results, more points separating his team from champions-elect Chelsea may cause the ground to shift a little further but any decision regarding the manager will be motivated much more by what happens next rather than what happened over the past eight months.

Certainly, this has been a lamentable defence of the title, as bad as when conceding it by 11 points in 2013. At the Etihad there is, however, a recognition that problems are not all down to the manager.

There are some issues with Pellegrini. Some City players think he is too nice — a soft touch who does not inspire with words or his substitutions and who displays a fondness for a 4-4-2 formation that they feel leaves them vulnerable.

Pellegrini has not alienated or even polarised his dressing room, however. The majority are happy to work and play for him. The more significant problem is that City’s squad, constructed carefully and expensively, is too old, too foreign and has not been improved by recent transfers.

City have had a very good team for quite a while now. Signing David Silva and Yaya Toure in 2010 and Sergio Aguero a year later lifted them to their current level but nothing since the first Premier League title has hinted at the further progress many presumed would be inevitable.

Recruitment has, on the whole, been poor, thus allowing established players to coast, perhaps subconsciously, without the pressure of in-house competition.

Football director Txiki Begiristain has been largely responsible for this and his contribution, at least that which we can see, has been disappointing given the reputation earned at Barcelona.

At all clubs, teams and players must move forward to thrive but too many at City have stagnated. Vincent Kompany, for example, no longer seems capable of looking after his own performances, never mind that of his team. For a club captain, his popularity in the City dressing room is limited.

Elsewhere, players such as Samir Nasri contributed when City were playing well but disappeared once things became harder. Since hacking at Neymar during the Barcelona defeat, an act that earned him the cheapest of yellow cards, the France international has played only 13 minutes of two games. It is understood that the two things are not unrelated. Nasri is just one who may fret a little about his future this summer.

Wary of Financial Fair Play restrictions, City cannot spend enormous sums on targets such as Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba without first selling. Others who are vulnerable include Stevan Jovetic, Bacary Sagna and even Toure.

The Toure debate is not new but what should be kept in mind is that the Ivorian will not be going anywhere until someone matches a salary that exceeds £1million a month.

It could be that City’s climb back to the very top will be slow. They will need to be shrewder in the market and hope investment in their academy pays off. Better decisions are required from top to bottom.

As for Pellegrini, he would be daft to think he is not vulnerable and a late-season surge would help him. Odd as it sounds, however, the identity of the manager is currently not City’s biggest issue. – Daily Mail

Mauritius won’t be easy for Bafana

Shakes Mashaba has warned South Africa against excitedly expecting Bafana Bafana to saunter into the next round of the African Nations Championships qualifiers.

|||

Shakes Mashaba has warned South Africa against excitedly expecting Bafana Bafana to saunter into the next round of the African Nations Championships (CHAN) qualifiers.

Bafana have been drawn to face Mauritius in the preliminary stage of the tournament for players who ply their trade in their domestic leagues, a tie many will anticipate the South Africans to have no problem winning given their history against the Indian Ocean islanders.

But Mashaba was quick to caution against over-confidence: “Some may be thinking we are playing Mauritius so it will be a walk in the park, but there are no easy teams anymore in international football.

“Every team wants to do well and if they believe you are a powerhouse they come at you firing on all cylinders, so we must prepare well and work hard for our success.”

That is likely to be the case with Mauritius, who have yet to beat Bafana since South Africa’s readmission to the international stage back in 1992.

Bafana will host the Mauritians in the third weekend of June with the return leg scheduled for the first weekend of July.

The winner of the tie will face either Swaziland or Angola for a spot in the 16-nation tournament that will be hosted by Rwanda from January 16 to February 7 next year.

Mashaba is aware of South Africa’s poor record in the showpiece that provides many local-based players an opportunity to play at an international tournament given that most African nations use overseas-based players for the more prestigious Africa Cup of Nations.

“The last time, we did not do well at home in the CHAN tournament and many will still be making reference to that so we have to improve on that. We need to pick a strong team that will represent this country well because we have many capable players who are home-based and can hold their own against other nations.

“I am confident we will succeed.”

Bafana could not get out of the group stages, failure that led to Sport Minsiter Fikile Mbalula controversially referring to the team as “a bunch of losers”. While their performances under Mashaba have since got Mbalula singing a different tune, Bafana would love nothing more than to get much further in next year’s edition and even possibly win the tournament.

That done, they will add their name alongside those of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Tunisia and Libya who are the previous winners of the tournament that was only launched in 2009.

City mourns Henyekane

The Henyekane family have described the passing of soccer star Richard Henyekane as a wound that is ripped open again.

|||

The Henyekane family have described the passing of soccer star Richard Henyekane as a wound that is ripped open again.

Henyekane’s aunt, Boitumelo Ganyaza, said the fact that the 31-year-old Free State Stars striker, who is affectionately known as the “Kimberley Express”, died just a few months after his brother, Joseph Henyekane, made it a bitter pill to swallow.

“This is an unexplainable feeling of pain. We haven’t healed yet from the death of Joseph and now that wound is ripped wide open again,” said Ganyaza.

According to reports, Henyekane and four others died after the vehicle they were travelling in collided with a truck in Bethlehem, Free State early yesterday morning.

Ganyaza said yesterday they were not sure of what really happened when Henyekane was killed.

“He was on his way from Bethlehem to QwaQwa. We are not sure whether he had been visiting or what. We are also not sure at this moment who the passengers in the car were and where they were from,” said Ganyaza.

She said Henyekane was supposed to come to Kimberley for the Easter weekend.

“He was supposed to come home for Easter, but it appears that he cancelled. We last saw him over Christmas because it was also during Joseph’s funeral,” she said.

Ganyaza said Richard’s mother informed her of his passing.

“I received a call from his mother at about 1am yesterday morning. She told me that she got a call that he was involved in an accident. She called the entire family and then rushed to Bethlehem to get the full information on what happened,” Ganyaza said.

Ganyaza said Henyekane never let the fame go to his head.

“He was a fun person, he loved to joke around. He was the opposite of his brother. Richard was a people’s person and would talk to a stranger as if he knew them for years. The fact that he was a famous soccer player did not influence the manner in which he treated people,” she said.

Henyekane played for the national soccer team, Bafana Bafana, nine times. He joined the Premier Soccer League outfit Free State Stars after playing for Mamelodi Sundowns.

Ganyaza said her nephew was tremendously talented and would have been noticed globally.

“For the amount of talent he had, he was supposed to be an international soccer player. His talent was rare, he was very good at what he did … but life doesn’t always work out the way we want it to,” she said.

Members of the soccer fraternity, nationally and provincially, sent their condolences to the family.

The South African Football Association (Safa) said that they are deeply shocked by the passing of Henyekane.

Safa president, Dr Danny Jordaan, said the soccer fraternity was still trying to come to terms with the passing of Henyekane’s brother.

“Another soldier has fallen. Richard’s passing comes at a time when we are not really done grieving the passing of his brother Joseph. Safa would like to send out our deepest sympathies to the family for their heartbreaking loss. We never know how much pain you are in but just know that you are in our prayers and we ask the Almighty to strengthen you in these trying times,” said Jordaan.

Free State Stars coach, Kinnah Phiri, said that he was saddened by the passing of Henyekane.

“I got a call to inform me of this sad news. I am very sorry for his passing and would like to convey my condolences on behalf of the club to the family. Richard has been a very promising player and we were very honoured when he joined Free State Stars from Sundowns. We last saw him play against AmaZulu and we are deeply touched by his untimely death,” said Phiri.

Henyekane played his last match for his club on April 4 when Free State Stars lost 1-0 to AmaZulu at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.

In the 2008/09 season he won the Absa Premiership Top Goal Scorer Award with 19 goals.

His fellow player at Free State Stars, Reuben Thebakang, said it was always a pleasure to play with Henyekane.

“We played together and we had a really nice time. Richard was not only a good player, but a good person. He treated everyone equal and with respect … he will be dearly missed,” said Thebakang.

The MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture, Lebogang Motlhaping, also conveyed his condolences.

“Richard was a son of the soil of the Province who applied his exceptional soccer skills and talents at clubs such as Mamelodi Sundowns and Golden Arrows. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Henyekane family and friends during this difficult time,” Motlhaping said.

The spokesman for Mamelodi Sundowns, Alex “Gold Fingers” Shakoane, described Henyekane’s passing as a “black day” for the soccer fraternity.

“We are deeply saddened. Richard was in a class of his own. Memories of him will remain with us forever. He has really touched each and everyone’s hearts at the Sundowns family and we had so many expectations from him. He will be remembered,” Shakoane said.

The ANC Youth League in the Northern Cape said in a statement that this “rising star had his feet firmly on the ground”.

“Henyekane was a disciplined soccer player who never allowed fame to go to his head. Young people should emulate his disciplined outlook and posture as he died a respected soccer star,” said the league.

The DA in the Province also conveyed their support to the family.

“Richard was an inspiration to the children of the Northern Cape. He showed that with hard work, you can accomplish your goals. We hope that those affected by his untimely passing will soon find peace in this challenging time,” the party said. - Diamond Fields Advertiser

Benitez to take over at City?

Rafa Benitez is considering a return to England next season and another crack at management.

|||

Rafa Benitez is considering a return to England next season and another crack at management, a development which would put him in contention to become Manchester City manager if the club decide to replace Manuel Pellegrini this summer.

Benitez is well known to City's director of football, Txiki Begiristain and, as seems increasingly likely, the Spaniard decides not to accept Napoli's offer of a contract extension beyond this season, that might make him attractive to City. The club's 2-1 defeat at Crystal Palace on Monday has put them at risk of being dragged into a battle for the Premier League fourth spot with Liverpool.

Benitez, 54, has maintained his remarkable track record in European competition at Napoli, who resume their Europa League campaign with a quarter-final first leg against Wolfsburg next week, a season after their three-way tie with Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League, in which they were edged out on goal difference.

The former Liverpool manager's family have remained on Merseyside during his two years in Naples, which has always made the prospect of a return to England attractive to him and the North-west particularly so.

City's chairman, Khaldoon al-Mubarak, faces a quandary as he decides who should take an ageing squad forward. The ideal candidate is Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola, whose football philosophy is precisely what City are looking for, though the Spaniard is unlikely to be available until summer 2016 at the earliest.

After Barcelona inflicted a devastating performance to eliminate City from the Champions League three weeks ago, there existed the prospect of the club continuing with Pellegrini in the short term until Guardiola becomes available. But the Palace defeat compounds the sense that City are going backwards.

Though City would be looking for a manager with the same possession-based philosophy that made Pellegrini attractive, Benitez would be likely to argue that tactics and game management are just as essential as a style of play. It is the lack of tactical acumen which has contributed to the gulf between City and the Continent's best in three disappointing Champions League campaigns.

Benitez can point to taking Liverpool to Champions League success in 2005, reaching the final again with them two years later and winning the Europa League with Chelsea in 2013 at the end of a tumultuous seven-month spell as interim manager.

Benitez is popular in Napoli, where he is under pressure to extend the two-year deal he signed after leaving Chelsea. The club finished third in their first domestic campaign under him, behind big-spending Juventus and Roma.

They are sixth in the current campaign and in a close fight with Fiorentina and Sampdoria for Europa League qualification with a squad which has had few expensive reinforcements. Croat Ivan Strinic arrived on a free from Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk and Manolo Gabbiadini from Sampdoria this winter after a total outlay of around £10m on four players last summer.

The tempestuous period of Benitez's reign at Liverpool, when the club was driven close to financial ruin by George Gillett Jnr and Tom Hicks, has contributed to the Spaniard's reputation as being political, though his periods at Chelsea and Napoli have not created conflict.

Another option for City would be to promote Patrick Vieira after only two years at the helm of City's development squad, though that would be a substantial gamble.

Suggestions linking Carlo Ancelotti with the job appear to be a product of the Italian's desire to leave Real Madrid rather than City pursuing him. Ancelotti's profile does not include an adherence to the brand of football City are determined to have for their teams. For the same reason, Atletico Madrid's Diego Simeone is not a target.

City's defeat at Selhurst Park makes victory in Sunday's Old Trafford derby even more important. Defeat against Manchester United, taken with a win for fifth-placed Liverpool against Newcastle United on Monday, could narrow the gap between the two to four points, with six games to play and City's run-in tougher. – The Independent

News sport : Richard Bachman gives up center-ice goal, is totally chill about it (Video)

Under different circumstances, Drew Doughty’s goal from the red line in the third period against Edmonton on Tuesday might go down as one of the most embarrassing given up by any goalie this season.

But Richard Bachman had plenty to smile about after the game.

“Giving up that second goal was pretty awesome,” he said, after making 25 saves in the Edmonton Oilers’ stunning 4-2 win over the Los Angeles Kings. “I was just trying to get on the top 10 list, and I’m pretty sure that will make it.”

Bachman said he saw Doughty rip the puck from center ice and tried to deflect it with his stick.

“The new pads, when they changed it, opened up the five-hole just a little bit. Two-inch puck, into a one-inch hole,” he said.

“But we won the game so I can laugh about it.”

For Bachman, it was just his seventh appearance of the season and first since March 30. Maybe he’s earned a couple more: Bachman has stopped 86 of 89 shots in winning three straight starts.

Reds target Cup glory

Liverpool's season seemingly rests on FA Cup glory, starting with a quarter-final replay against Championship side Blackburn Rovers.

|||

London - With Premier League results on the slide and Champions League qualification hanging in the balance, Liverpool's season seemingly rests on FA Cup glory, starting with a quarter-final replay against Championship side Blackburn Rovers.

Back-to-back league defeats by Manchester United and Arsenal have slowed Liverpool's pursuit of a top-four finish and Champions League qualification as they trail fourth-placed Manchester City by seven points with seven games remaining.

After a 0-0 draw against second-tier Blackburn in the first game at Anfield, Liverpool, who have not won the FA Cup since 2006, travel to Ewood Park in the hope of setting up a semi-final clash with Aston Villa at Wembley.

“Winning the cup would save our season,” midfielder Philippe Coutinho told the club's website (www.liverpoolfc.com).

“It is very important for us to have that as an objective. We have to pick ourselves up after what happened against Arsenal to get the results that we need.”

Brendan Rodgers has played down reports of dressing-room unrest after Saturday's 4-1 mauling at Arsenal but the Liverpool boss is aware they must address their lack of goals.

Liverpool scored 101 Premier League goals last season as they finished runners-up but with Luis Suarez joining Barcelona and Daniel Sturridge injured for much of the campaign, they have only managed 45 in 31 league games.

“We are still trying to find solutions at the top end of the field,” Rodgers said. “It's about finding what suits the players. We have obviously got a number of players out now and when we changed the system it suited them.

“When everyone is fit and available we are able to compete with this squad. Three players on six goals. That's the reality of where we are at, and we have to find solutions.”

Steven Gerrard, Martin Skrtel and Emre Can will be suspended against a Blackburn side dreaming of adding Liverpool to their list of Premier League scalps after beating Swansea City and Stoke City in previous rounds.

“It's a chance to get Ewood Park rocking and it should remind us all of the Premiership days,” manager Gary Bowyer said.

“We've done particularly well at home to Premiership clubs in the FA Cup and, hopefully, there will be a real buzz around Ewood Park come kickoff time.” – Reuters

Luiz, Motta injury blow for PSG

David Luiz and midfielder Thiago Motta picked up injuries that will sideline them for Paris St German’s Champions League quarter-final home game against Barcelona.

|||

Paris - Paris St Germain paid a heavy price for their weekend win at Olympique de Marseille as centre back David Luiz and midfielder Thiago Motta picked up injuries that will sideline them for the Champions League quarter-final home game against Barcelona.

The French champions were already without suspended striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic and midfielder Marco Verratti for the first-leg game on April 15.

Brazilian David Luiz, whose last-gasp goal helped PSG eliminate Chelsea in the last 16, will be out for four weeks and will miss both Barcelona games, coach Laurent Blanc told a news conference on Tuesday.

“David Luiz will be out for four weeks and Thiago Motta sidelined for 10 days through injuries they picked up against Marseille,” Blanc said.

Asked if the Italian midfielder had a chance to be back for the return leg, scheduled on April 21, Blanc said: “Ten days, it will be complicated.”

Benteke’s late strike rescues Villa

There were seven minutes left on the clock when Christian Benteke sprang into action for Aston Villa.

|||

London - Christian Benteke's superb hat-trick rescued a potentially priceless Premier League point for Aston Villa, who twice came back from a goal down to draw 3-3 on Tuesday with relegation rivals Queens Park Rangers.

Benteke's free kick with seven minutes to play completed a precious treble and secured a draw that moved hosts Villa up to 16th, three points above the relegation zone while 18th-placed QPR's plight remains perilous.

QPR had taken the lead through Matt Phillips, before Benteke turned the match on its head with his first two goals in the opening 45 minutes.

Veteran Clint Hill levelled shortly after the break with a header and Charlie Austin snatched his 17th goal of the season to restore QPR's lead.

Benteke, however, stepped up to loft his set-piece over the wall and beyond the dive of Rob Green for his seventh goal in his last five league games to round off a pulsating encounter.

“It is always nice to get a hat-trick but it is shame we didn't get the three points. I think we deserved three points, we were better than them,” Benteke told the BBC.

Villa manager Tim Sherwood had described the match as the club's biggest for years and the most crucial of his short managerial career, but his side were hit with an early sucker punch that left them playing catch-up.

Having thumped West Bromwich Albion 4-1 at the weekend QPR were quickly back among the goals as Phillips headed home after seven minutes from Bobby Zamora's clever cross.

The advantage was short-lived as Benteke cut into the area and curled home three minutes later sparking raucous celebrations in the home dugout with Sherwood tearing off his trademark gillet and hurling it to the floor.

The Belgian striker's second arrived 13 minutes before the break with the re-enthused targetman, who had scored only two league goals before February, racing through and finishing confidently.

Villa's home record of three wins all season would have given hope to the visitors as they emerged after the break even with their own record as the league worst travellers.

Hill's leveller arrived 11 minutes after the interval as he powered home a header from a corner, handing momentum back to QPR, who took the lead when Austin's rifled finish found the net from Phillips's cross.

Benteke's leveller however left honours even, with Villa on 29 points with six games remaining, three more than QPR who remain in the drop zone.

News sport : One Direction's Niall Horan will caddy for Rory McIlroy in Par 3 contest

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA - FEBRUARY 07: Niall Horan of One Direction performs during the 'On the Road Again' World Tour at Allianz Stadium on February 7, 2015 in Sydney, Australia. (Photo by Mark Metcalfe/Getty Images for HJPR) AUGUSTA, Ga. - It's not often that a player gets upstaged by his own caddy. But it might just happen on Wednesday at the Par 3 contest at Augusta National, when Rory McIlroy will play with none other than Niall Horan of One Direction* carrying his clubs.

(*-No, we didn't know who he was either. But roll with it.)

"He's excited to come here," McIlroy said Tuesday afternoon. "He's never been to Augusta. I caught up with him at the end of last year and he was really excited, and I said, 'If you're available Wednesday afternoon and you want to carry the bag for nine holes, you're more than welcome."

Augusta National is known for its shouts; there's nothing quite like the wave of sound that rolls across the course in the wake of a great shot. But it's never seen anything quite like a One Direction fan's shriek. That Par 3 should be an interesting one, to be sure. Arnie's Army has nothing on the Directioneers.

News sport : Byron Scott thinks certain Lakers might 'end up shooting me in the back' in a foxhole scenario

Head coach Byron Scott has not been a godsend to the Los Angeles Lakers in his first year, he’s once again presiding over a terrible defense and his offensively-minded club is only 23rd out of 30 teams on that end. He has been a godsend for those of us that cackle from afar, though, documenting his various missteps in a Laker season gone terribly wrong (by design, we think).

[DraftKings: FREE entry to huge cash Fantasy Basketball Contest with first deposit]

Scott hasn’t had an out and out pitched battle with his players so far this season, but with a week to go there is still time to have it out with certain members of his 20-win team. Scott, in his estimation, doesn’t seem to think he’d have many defenders should things go sour in the trenches.

From the Los Angeles Times:

"I got a sense of a whole lot of them I wouldn't want to be in a fox hole with," Scott said after Monday's practice. "I think they'd end up shooting me in the back. So I've got a pretty good sense of the guys that I think are going to be around, that we will build around, build together in this process and go through it."

Only four current Lakers have fully guaranteed contracts for next season, with the team likely to add point guard Jordan Clarkson’s team option to that list while denying the whopper of a $9 million team option on Jordan Hill. With that in place, Scott sure seems to love running plays for Jordan Hill, and the Lakers still seem like the sort of squad that will look to punt the final year of Kobe Bryant’s career in 2015-16 as they ready themselves with a draft pick and cap space-heavy 2016 offseason.

(Hopefully Scott sees fit to play Kobe past the team’s drop out of the playoff race. You’ll recall when Scott laughably suggested he’d only rest Kobe when the Lakers were out of playoff contention earlier in 2015. The Lakers were 12-27 at the time, with a game against the Cleveland Cavaliers coming that night.)

Of course, Scott is the sort of guy that swears he’s been talking with potential free agents during games. Those supposed discussions would not only act as instances of tampering, but they would also come in full view of several current Laker free agents. Again, you’d have to believe that Scott actually engaged in these sorts of conversations, but you can understand why certain Lakers might not want to dive into the trenches with their current coach.

One of those Lakers under contract for next year (and the season after that) is mercurial shooting guard Nick Young. Nick Young takes a lot of three-pointers, and hates playing defense. Byron Scott hates three-pointers, and talks up a great defensive game (even though his Lakers and Cavaliers were routinely ranked amongst the NBA’s worst in defensive efficiency).

It was only a matter of time. From ESPN Los Angeles, via SB Nation:

"I consider Nick either a home run- or a strikeout-type guy on the offensive end. Just like I told him, he has to elevate his game. He has to grow as a basketball player if he wants to continue to play in this league for a long time. He has to get better at moving without the ball, he has to be better at defending people a little bit better and be a better off-the-ball defender as well."

Scott isn’t wrong in his assertions, and Young truly has tailed off this season (36 percent from the field, just a tick better from long range) in contributing the lone thing he’s good at.

Still, Scott’s outmoded offense did Young no favors this season, and it’s rather rare for coaches of 20-win teams to be caught frankly discussing the career outlook of a player who is signed through 2018 (Young has a player option for 2017-18). These are two of the reasons why Byron’s particular fox hole is a chilly one.

Again, the Lakers will probably look to tank in 2015-16 again as the franchise seems bereft of free agent options (no star is going to take less money to join a terrible team to watch Kobe hoist 20 shots a night). This means the Lakers will probably keep Scott around next year, and Laker fans will have to work through the purgatory yet again. They’ll come out of it with cap space and another draft pick, possibly, but Laker fans will also have to sit through another 82 games of Byron Scott.

And all the practice quotes that come with that. As a guy that gets to write about the NBA, I don’t mind that in the slightest.
