City mourns Henyekane

The Henyekane family have described the passing of soccer star Richard Henyekane as a wound that is ripped open again.

|||

The Henyekane family have described the passing of soccer star Richard Henyekane as a wound that is ripped open again.

Henyekane’s aunt, Boitumelo Ganyaza, said the fact that the 31-year-old Free State Stars striker, who is affectionately known as the “Kimberley Express”, died just a few months after his brother, Joseph Henyekane, made it a bitter pill to swallow.

“This is an unexplainable feeling of pain. We haven’t healed yet from the death of Joseph and now that wound is ripped wide open again,” said Ganyaza.

According to reports, Henyekane and four others died after the vehicle they were travelling in collided with a truck in Bethlehem, Free State early yesterday morning.

Ganyaza said yesterday they were not sure of what really happened when Henyekane was killed.

“He was on his way from Bethlehem to QwaQwa. We are not sure whether he had been visiting or what. We are also not sure at this moment who the passengers in the car were and where they were from,” said Ganyaza.

She said Henyekane was supposed to come to Kimberley for the Easter weekend.

“He was supposed to come home for Easter, but it appears that he cancelled. We last saw him over Christmas because it was also during Joseph’s funeral,” she said.

Ganyaza said Richard’s mother informed her of his passing.

“I received a call from his mother at about 1am yesterday morning. She told me that she got a call that he was involved in an accident. She called the entire family and then rushed to Bethlehem to get the full information on what happened,” Ganyaza said.

Ganyaza said Henyekane never let the fame go to his head.

“He was a fun person, he loved to joke around. He was the opposite of his brother. Richard was a people’s person and would talk to a stranger as if he knew them for years. The fact that he was a famous soccer player did not influence the manner in which he treated people,” she said.

Henyekane played for the national soccer team, Bafana Bafana, nine times. He joined the Premier Soccer League outfit Free State Stars after playing for Mamelodi Sundowns.

Ganyaza said her nephew was tremendously talented and would have been noticed globally.

“For the amount of talent he had, he was supposed to be an international soccer player. His talent was rare, he was very good at what he did … but life doesn’t always work out the way we want it to,” she said.

Members of the soccer fraternity, nationally and provincially, sent their condolences to the family.

The South African Football Association (Safa) said that they are deeply shocked by the passing of Henyekane.

Safa president, Dr Danny Jordaan, said the soccer fraternity was still trying to come to terms with the passing of Henyekane’s brother.

“Another soldier has fallen. Richard’s passing comes at a time when we are not really done grieving the passing of his brother Joseph. Safa would like to send out our deepest sympathies to the family for their heartbreaking loss. We never know how much pain you are in but just know that you are in our prayers and we ask the Almighty to strengthen you in these trying times,” said Jordaan.

Free State Stars coach, Kinnah Phiri, said that he was saddened by the passing of Henyekane.

“I got a call to inform me of this sad news. I am very sorry for his passing and would like to convey my condolences on behalf of the club to the family. Richard has been a very promising player and we were very honoured when he joined Free State Stars from Sundowns. We last saw him play against AmaZulu and we are deeply touched by his untimely death,” said Phiri.

Henyekane played his last match for his club on April 4 when Free State Stars lost 1-0 to AmaZulu at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.

In the 2008/09 season he won the Absa Premiership Top Goal Scorer Award with 19 goals.

His fellow player at Free State Stars, Reuben Thebakang, said it was always a pleasure to play with Henyekane.

“We played together and we had a really nice time. Richard was not only a good player, but a good person. He treated everyone equal and with respect … he will be dearly missed,” said Thebakang.

The MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture, Lebogang Motlhaping, also conveyed his condolences.

“Richard was a son of the soil of the Province who applied his exceptional soccer skills and talents at clubs such as Mamelodi Sundowns and Golden Arrows. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Henyekane family and friends during this difficult time,” Motlhaping said.

The spokesman for Mamelodi Sundowns, Alex “Gold Fingers” Shakoane, described Henyekane’s passing as a “black day” for the soccer fraternity.

“We are deeply saddened. Richard was in a class of his own. Memories of him will remain with us forever. He has really touched each and everyone’s hearts at the Sundowns family and we had so many expectations from him. He will be remembered,” Shakoane said.

The ANC Youth League in the Northern Cape said in a statement that this “rising star had his feet firmly on the ground”.

“Henyekane was a disciplined soccer player who never allowed fame to go to his head. Young people should emulate his disciplined outlook and posture as he died a respected soccer star,” said the league.

The DA in the Province also conveyed their support to the family.

“Richard was an inspiration to the children of the Northern Cape. He showed that with hard work, you can accomplish your goals. We hope that those affected by his untimely passing will soon find peace in this challenging time,” the party said. - Diamond Fields Advertiser

Benitez to take over at City?

Rafa Benitez is considering a return to England next season and another crack at management.

|||

Rafa Benitez is considering a return to England next season and another crack at management, a development which would put him in contention to become Manchester City manager if the club decide to replace Manuel Pellegrini this summer.

Benitez is well known to City's director of football, Txiki Begiristain and, as seems increasingly likely, the Spaniard decides not to accept Napoli's offer of a contract extension beyond this season, that might make him attractive to City. The club's 2-1 defeat at Crystal Palace on Monday has put them at risk of being dragged into a battle for the Premier League fourth spot with Liverpool.

Benitez, 54, has maintained his remarkable track record in European competition at Napoli, who resume their Europa League campaign with a quarter-final first leg against Wolfsburg next week, a season after their three-way tie with Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League, in which they were edged out on goal difference.

The former Liverpool manager's family have remained on Merseyside during his two years in Naples, which has always made the prospect of a return to England attractive to him and the North-west particularly so.

City's chairman, Khaldoon al-Mubarak, faces a quandary as he decides who should take an ageing squad forward. The ideal candidate is Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola, whose football philosophy is precisely what City are looking for, though the Spaniard is unlikely to be available until summer 2016 at the earliest.

After Barcelona inflicted a devastating performance to eliminate City from the Champions League three weeks ago, there existed the prospect of the club continuing with Pellegrini in the short term until Guardiola becomes available. But the Palace defeat compounds the sense that City are going backwards.

Though City would be looking for a manager with the same possession-based philosophy that made Pellegrini attractive, Benitez would be likely to argue that tactics and game management are just as essential as a style of play. It is the lack of tactical acumen which has contributed to the gulf between City and the Continent's best in three disappointing Champions League campaigns.

Benitez can point to taking Liverpool to Champions League success in 2005, reaching the final again with them two years later and winning the Europa League with Chelsea in 2013 at the end of a tumultuous seven-month spell as interim manager.

Benitez is popular in Napoli, where he is under pressure to extend the two-year deal he signed after leaving Chelsea. The club finished third in their first domestic campaign under him, behind big-spending Juventus and Roma.

They are sixth in the current campaign and in a close fight with Fiorentina and Sampdoria for Europa League qualification with a squad which has had few expensive reinforcements. Croat Ivan Strinic arrived on a free from Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk and Manolo Gabbiadini from Sampdoria this winter after a total outlay of around £10m on four players last summer.

The tempestuous period of Benitez's reign at Liverpool, when the club was driven close to financial ruin by George Gillett Jnr and Tom Hicks, has contributed to the Spaniard's reputation as being political, though his periods at Chelsea and Napoli have not created conflict.

Another option for City would be to promote Patrick Vieira after only two years at the helm of City's development squad, though that would be a substantial gamble.

Suggestions linking Carlo Ancelotti with the job appear to be a product of the Italian's desire to leave Real Madrid rather than City pursuing him. Ancelotti's profile does not include an adherence to the brand of football City are determined to have for their teams. For the same reason, Atletico Madrid's Diego Simeone is not a target.

City's defeat at Selhurst Park makes victory in Sunday's Old Trafford derby even more important. Defeat against Manchester United, taken with a win for fifth-placed Liverpool against Newcastle United on Monday, could narrow the gap between the two to four points, with six games to play and City's run-in tougher. – The Independent

News sport : Richard Bachman gives up center-ice goal, is totally chill about it (Video)

Under different circumstances, Drew Doughty’s goal from the red line in the third period against Edmonton on Tuesday might go down as one of the most embarrassing given up by any goalie this season.

But Richard Bachman had plenty to smile about after the game.

“Giving up that second goal was pretty awesome,” he said, after making 25 saves in the Edmonton Oilers’ stunning 4-2 win over the Los Angeles Kings. “I was just trying to get on the top 10 list, and I’m pretty sure that will make it.”

Bachman said he saw Doughty rip the puck from center ice and tried to deflect it with his stick.

“The new pads, when they changed it, opened up the five-hole just a little bit. Two-inch puck, into a one-inch hole,” he said.

“But we won the game so I can laugh about it.”

For Bachman, it was just his seventh appearance of the season and first since March 30. Maybe he’s earned a couple more: Bachman has stopped 86 of 89 shots in winning three straight starts.

Reds target Cup glory

Liverpool's season seemingly rests on FA Cup glory, starting with a quarter-final replay against Championship side Blackburn Rovers.

|||

London - With Premier League results on the slide and Champions League qualification hanging in the balance, Liverpool's season seemingly rests on FA Cup glory, starting with a quarter-final replay against Championship side Blackburn Rovers.

Back-to-back league defeats by Manchester United and Arsenal have slowed Liverpool's pursuit of a top-four finish and Champions League qualification as they trail fourth-placed Manchester City by seven points with seven games remaining.

After a 0-0 draw against second-tier Blackburn in the first game at Anfield, Liverpool, who have not won the FA Cup since 2006, travel to Ewood Park in the hope of setting up a semi-final clash with Aston Villa at Wembley.

“Winning the cup would save our season,” midfielder Philippe Coutinho told the club's website (www.liverpoolfc.com).

“It is very important for us to have that as an objective. We have to pick ourselves up after what happened against Arsenal to get the results that we need.”

Brendan Rodgers has played down reports of dressing-room unrest after Saturday's 4-1 mauling at Arsenal but the Liverpool boss is aware they must address their lack of goals.

Liverpool scored 101 Premier League goals last season as they finished runners-up but with Luis Suarez joining Barcelona and Daniel Sturridge injured for much of the campaign, they have only managed 45 in 31 league games.

“We are still trying to find solutions at the top end of the field,” Rodgers said. “It's about finding what suits the players. We have obviously got a number of players out now and when we changed the system it suited them.

“When everyone is fit and available we are able to compete with this squad. Three players on six goals. That's the reality of where we are at, and we have to find solutions.”

Steven Gerrard, Martin Skrtel and Emre Can will be suspended against a Blackburn side dreaming of adding Liverpool to their list of Premier League scalps after beating Swansea City and Stoke City in previous rounds.

“It's a chance to get Ewood Park rocking and it should remind us all of the Premiership days,” manager Gary Bowyer said.

“We've done particularly well at home to Premiership clubs in the FA Cup and, hopefully, there will be a real buzz around Ewood Park come kickoff time.” – Reuters

Luiz, Motta injury blow for PSG

David Luiz and midfielder Thiago Motta picked up injuries that will sideline them for Paris St German’s Champions League quarter-final home game against Barcelona.

|||

Paris - Paris St Germain paid a heavy price for their weekend win at Olympique de Marseille as centre back David Luiz and midfielder Thiago Motta picked up injuries that will sideline them for the Champions League quarter-final home game against Barcelona.

The French champions were already without suspended striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic and midfielder Marco Verratti for the first-leg game on April 15.

Brazilian David Luiz, whose last-gasp goal helped PSG eliminate Chelsea in the last 16, will be out for four weeks and will miss both Barcelona games, coach Laurent Blanc told a news conference on Tuesday.

“David Luiz will be out for four weeks and Thiago Motta sidelined for 10 days through injuries they picked up against Marseille,” Blanc said.

Asked if the Italian midfielder had a chance to be back for the return leg, scheduled on April 21, Blanc said: “Ten days, it will be complicated.”

Benteke’s late strike rescues Villa

There were seven minutes left on the clock when Christian Benteke sprang into action for Aston Villa.

|||

London - Christian Benteke's superb hat-trick rescued a potentially priceless Premier League point for Aston Villa, who twice came back from a goal down to draw 3-3 on Tuesday with relegation rivals Queens Park Rangers.

Benteke's free kick with seven minutes to play completed a precious treble and secured a draw that moved hosts Villa up to 16th, three points above the relegation zone while 18th-placed QPR's plight remains perilous.

QPR had taken the lead through Matt Phillips, before Benteke turned the match on its head with his first two goals in the opening 45 minutes.

Veteran Clint Hill levelled shortly after the break with a header and Charlie Austin snatched his 17th goal of the season to restore QPR's lead.

Benteke, however, stepped up to loft his set-piece over the wall and beyond the dive of Rob Green for his seventh goal in his last five league games to round off a pulsating encounter.

“It is always nice to get a hat-trick but it is shame we didn't get the three points. I think we deserved three points, we were better than them,” Benteke told the BBC.

Villa manager Tim Sherwood had described the match as the club's biggest for years and the most crucial of his short managerial career, but his side were hit with an early sucker punch that left them playing catch-up.

Having thumped West Bromwich Albion 4-1 at the weekend QPR were quickly back among the goals as Phillips headed home after seven minutes from Bobby Zamora's clever cross.

The advantage was short-lived as Benteke cut into the area and curled home three minutes later sparking raucous celebrations in the home dugout with Sherwood tearing off his trademark gillet and hurling it to the floor.

The Belgian striker's second arrived 13 minutes before the break with the re-enthused targetman, who had scored only two league goals before February, racing through and finishing confidently.

Villa's home record of three wins all season would have given hope to the visitors as they emerged after the break even with their own record as the league worst travellers.

Hill's leveller arrived 11 minutes after the interval as he powered home a header from a corner, handing momentum back to QPR, who took the lead when Austin's rifled finish found the net from Phillips's cross.

Benteke's leveller however left honours even, with Villa on 29 points with six games remaining, three more than QPR who remain in the drop zone.

News sport : One Direction's Niall Horan will caddy for Rory McIlroy in Par 3 contest

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA - FEBRUARY 07: Niall Horan of One Direction performs during the 'On the Road Again' World Tour at Allianz Stadium on February 7, 2015 in Sydney, Australia. (Photo by Mark Metcalfe/Getty Images for HJPR) AUGUSTA, Ga. - It's not often that a player gets upstaged by his own caddy. But it might just happen on Wednesday at the Par 3 contest at Augusta National, when Rory McIlroy will play with none other than Niall Horan of One Direction* carrying his clubs.

(*-No, we didn't know who he was either. But roll with it.)

"He's excited to come here," McIlroy said Tuesday afternoon. "He's never been to Augusta. I caught up with him at the end of last year and he was really excited, and I said, 'If you're available Wednesday afternoon and you want to carry the bag for nine holes, you're more than welcome."

Augusta National is known for its shouts; there's nothing quite like the wave of sound that rolls across the course in the wake of a great shot. But it's never seen anything quite like a One Direction fan's shriek. That Par 3 should be an interesting one, to be sure. Arnie's Army has nothing on the Directioneers.

News sport : Byron Scott thinks certain Lakers might 'end up shooting me in the back' in a foxhole scenario

Head coach Byron Scott has not been a godsend to the Los Angeles Lakers in his first year, he’s once again presiding over a terrible defense and his offensively-minded club is only 23rd out of 30 teams on that end. He has been a godsend for those of us that cackle from afar, though, documenting his various missteps in a Laker season gone terribly wrong (by design, we think).

[DraftKings: FREE entry to huge cash Fantasy Basketball Contest with first deposit]

Scott hasn’t had an out and out pitched battle with his players so far this season, but with a week to go there is still time to have it out with certain members of his 20-win team. Scott, in his estimation, doesn’t seem to think he’d have many defenders should things go sour in the trenches.

From the Los Angeles Times:

"I got a sense of a whole lot of them I wouldn't want to be in a fox hole with," Scott said after Monday's practice. "I think they'd end up shooting me in the back. So I've got a pretty good sense of the guys that I think are going to be around, that we will build around, build together in this process and go through it."

Only four current Lakers have fully guaranteed contracts for next season, with the team likely to add point guard Jordan Clarkson’s team option to that list while denying the whopper of a $9 million team option on Jordan Hill. With that in place, Scott sure seems to love running plays for Jordan Hill, and the Lakers still seem like the sort of squad that will look to punt the final year of Kobe Bryant’s career in 2015-16 as they ready themselves with a draft pick and cap space-heavy 2016 offseason.

(Hopefully Scott sees fit to play Kobe past the team’s drop out of the playoff race. You’ll recall when Scott laughably suggested he’d only rest Kobe when the Lakers were out of playoff contention earlier in 2015. The Lakers were 12-27 at the time, with a game against the Cleveland Cavaliers coming that night.)

[Follow Dunks Don't Lie on Tumblr: The best slams from all of basketball]

Of course, Scott is the sort of guy that swears he’s been talking with potential free agents during games. Those supposed discussions would not only act as instances of tampering, but they would also come in full view of several current Laker free agents. Again, you’d have to believe that Scott actually engaged in these sorts of conversations, but you can understand why certain Lakers might not want to dive into the trenches with their current coach.

One of those Lakers under contract for next year (and the season after that) is mercurial shooting guard Nick Young. Nick Young takes a lot of three-pointers, and hates playing defense. Byron Scott hates three-pointers, and talks up a great defensive game (even though his Lakers and Cavaliers were routinely ranked amongst the NBA’s worst in defensive efficiency).

It was only a matter of time. From ESPN Los Angeles, via SB Nation:

"I consider Nick either a home run- or a strikeout-type guy on the offensive end. Just like I told him, he has to elevate his game. He has to grow as a basketball player if he wants to continue to play in this league for a long time. He has to get better at moving without the ball, he has to be better at defending people a little bit better and be a better off-the-ball defender as well."

Scott isn’t wrong in his assertions, and Young truly has tailed off this season (36 percent from the field, just a tick better from long range) in contributing the lone thing he’s good at.

Still, Scott’s outmoded offense did Young no favors this season, and it’s rather rare for coaches of 20-win teams to be caught frankly discussing the career outlook of a player who is signed through 2018 (Young has a player option for 2017-18). These are two of the reasons why Byron’s particular fox hole is a chilly one.

Again, the Lakers will probably look to tank in 2015-16 again as the franchise seems bereft of free agent options (no star is going to take less money to join a terrible team to watch Kobe hoist 20 shots a night). This means the Lakers will probably keep Scott around next year, and Laker fans will have to work through the purgatory yet again. They’ll come out of it with cap space and another draft pick, possibly, but Laker fans will also have to sit through another 82 games of Byron Scott.

And all the practice quotes that come with that. As a guy that gets to write about the NBA, I don’t mind that in the slightest.

News sport : Florida DE Dante Fowler Jr. would be 'stunned' if Jaguars pass on him at 3

Attention, NFL mock drafters: You might want to consider penciling in Dante Fowler Jr. to the third overall pick.

That's because Fowler believes that he and the Jacksonville Jaguars, owners of the pick, would be a perfect match, according to the Florida Times-Union. In fact, the former Florida Gators defensive end doesn't think he'll last past three.

"I'd be stunned, because of the scheme that coach Gus [Bradley] has," Fowler said. "I can set the edge and I can come off the edge. I'd be surprised, but that that's how the draft goes. I'm just happy I'll be drafted on the first day."

The scheme includes a position called the "Leo" — a hybrid rush spot in the Jaguars' defense, which is derived from the Seattle Seahawks' blueprint — and yet they passed on drafting one last year when many people assumed Khalil Mack was that player who also fit perfectly into that role. Instead, they pulled a semi-stunner (also at No. 3) in taking Blake Bortles.

Well, the Jaguars sit here now still needing one, with veteran Chris Clemons an expensive and older placeholder there. The 6-3, 265-pound Fowler, still only 20 years old, has been meeting with teams throughout the top 10 selections and is coming off a strong season despite the Gators' struggles overall, so his confidence is not without justification.

Fowler only worked out in position drills on Tuesday at the Gators' pro day and showed good footwork and agility. He also brimmed with confidence when asked about his NFL future, which looks pretty bright. Just ask Fowler.

News sport : Quinton 'Rampage' Jackson ordered off UFC card as tug-of-war with Bellator wages on

A New Jersey Superior Court judge has granted Bellator MMA a preliminary injunction that will keep Quinton "Rampage" Jackson from participating in the co-main event of UFC 186 later this month.

The news adds another twist in Jackson's ongoing saga as he tries to return to the place where he won light heavyweight gold at UFC 71 in 2007 when he knocked out hall of famer Chuck Liddell in the first round.

And clearly 'Rampage' isn't too keen on the latest development.

"Smart move Bellator!" Jackson wrote on Instagram . "Go to a small town where your company knows the judge to get a [judgment] to [piss off] your customers. #aintworriedboutnothing."

The UFC, meanwhile, released the following statement on Tuesday afternoon, and seemingly appears to be weighing its own options after Tuesday's ruling.

"UFC has been advised of the New Jersey state court’s ruling in the matter between Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and Bellator MMA. The UFC organization was surprised about the ruling because Mr. Jackson represented to UFC on multiple occasions that he was free to negotiate and contract with UFC. The UFC organization is also surprised that Bellator sat on its alleged rights for months before taking action.

UFC understands that Mr. Jackson is considering an emergency appeal, and UFC is also considering action to protect its rights and minimize damages regarding this matter. UFC 186 in Montreal, Canada will proceed as planned and UFC is currently evaluating its fight card options."

Since leaving the UFC in early 2013 after suffering three consecutive losses, Jackson made the jump to the Viacom-owned rival Bellator.

(Getty)

In Bellator, Rampage managed to put together three consecutive wins; two of which were back-to-back knockout victories – something he hadn't managed since his championship run in 2007.

Then, after seemingly everything was copacetic with his new employer, rumblings began surfacing in Rampage's camp about increasing resentment – a main point of contention was said to be a planned reality show that was mishandled, among other things.

When Jackson signed with Bellator, the chairman and CEO was Bjorn Rebney. Apparently Jackson enjoyed working with Rebney, because when former Strikeforce founder Scott Coker was handed the reigns in 2014 after Rebney's departure, Jackson's attitude began to sour.

By December he had made his intentions clear, and announced that he was cancelling his contract with Bellator, and would be returning to the UFC after, what he claimed, were multiple breaches in his contract.

"After five months of grueling negotiations and gray-area contract talks with Bellator MMA and parent-company Viacom, Quinton "Rampage" Jackson officially terminates his contract with the up-and-coming promotion citing multiple breaches since the removal of President and Founder Bjorn Rebney. Jackson exercises a clause in the agreement that allows for a 45-day window to satisfy any contract dispute. Bellator MMA, failing to fulfill the requests of Jackson, was put on notice, failed to respond and eventually notified that negotiations were officially terminated."

Jackson's jump was a surprise to Scott Coker, and the new president released a statement maintaining that Bellator would fight back. On March 4, a suit was filed by Bellator alleging that the UFC and Jackson were violating an existing contract. Jackson, 36, was booked for his UFC return fight against Fabio Maldonado at UFC 186 on April 25. Now, with the New Jersey judge's ruling, Jackson has been removed from the card as his career is further tied up in litigation.

It is surprising that the saga of the aging legend has taken as many turns as it has these last few years (losing streaks, winning streaks, new promotions). But, perhaps, what is even more surprising is the fact that the UFC (and their large team of litigators) would agree contractually with Jackson if he was still under contract with Bellator. Did they just take Jackson’s word for it, as the UFC's statement seemingly implies, or did they truly believe Bellator was in breach?

From the start, the Rampage Bellator/UFC saga has seemed largely like a bad sitcom divorce. Now, these two promotions seem determined to battle it out in a courtroom.

News sport : Buccaneers' Twitter was really, really excited about Marcus Mariota workout

Marcus Mariota had a private workout with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Tuesday. If you follow the Buccaneers' official Twitter feed, you know that.

Some teams are so paranoid about giving away their draft plans, they avoid private meetings with targets before the draft. The Buccaneers don't have that same issue with teams screwing up their plans because they have the first pick. It was still a bit odd to see a team so open and excited about a meeting with a prospect, as the Bucs were with the Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback from Oregon.

The Buccaneers have put out many clues that they're set on Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston. So why the social media show for the meeting with Mariota? This is all from the Bucs' Twitter feed on Tuesday:

There were a few other Mariota-related retweets, and Buccaneers website writer Scott Smith gave a detailed account on his Twitter feed. The Buccaneers made sure everyone knew that they were talking to Mariota on Tuesday. But why?

I still believe the Buccaneers will take Winston. The Buccaneers are doing the smart thing by meeting with Mariota and working him out; there's no harm in doing all the preparation possible when you have a franchise-changing opportunity like taking a quarterback with the first pick. And if the Buccaneers are spending the time to meet with Mariota, there has to be a non-zero chance they could go against all the public hints about Winston and take Mariota instead. Otherwise, there's very little point in wasting their time. But still, I think Winston goes first.

Why the public show? Usually this type of thing is a smoke screen, but there's no point in that. The Buccaneers aren't gaining any leverage for trades by pumping up Mariota as a possible first pick. They wouldn't trade down past No. 2 anyway after cutting Josh McCown, their starting quarterback from last season, in preparation to draft one (though, with how bad the Buccaneers have been run recently, nothing can be totally ruled out I guess).

There's really no other obvious reason for pumping up the Mariota visit, except that it's a slow news day and the Buccaneers really don't mind making a public spectacle of it because it doesn't affect them either way. The Buccaneers have also shared on Twitter and written plenty on their site about Winston. Their site said they have a private meeting with Winston on Wednesday, which will likely get the same social media treatment. But, perhaps the Buccaneers are trying to tell us there shouldn't be assumptions about Winston being the slam dunk No. 1 pick. Either way, they seemed very excited to get to meet Mariota on Tuesday.

News sport : After an odd year, the Phoenix Suns face an uncertain future

The 2013-14 Phoenix Suns ended their season with about as much momentum as any team in the NBA, which is odd for a group that missed out on the playoffs. The 48-win team had all of the basketball cognoscenti on its side as they watched six other Eastern teams with either worse or similar records made the postseason in the pitiful East, it defied expectation in turning what was thought to be a tanking season around, and the squad’s bevy of on-roster or incoming sound draft picks seemed to portend well for a bright future. The franchise’s lone question mark, free agent Eric Bledsoe, didn’t seem likely to go anywhere due to the restricted nature of his free agency.

[DraftKings: FREE entry to huge cash Fantasy Basketball Contest with first deposit]

A year later, the outlook has changed. The Suns still managed a respectable record in 2014-15, topping .500 in the West is no joke, but the team is three games out of the playoff bracket with just five to play. The squad has lost two-thirds of its games since Jan. 20, it had to ship the disgruntled Goran Dragic and the we’re-not-sure-about-this-guy Isaiah Thomas out at the trade deadline, and the return prize in that deadline likely will not play again this year.

That prize, hybrid guard Brandon Knight, will also be a restricted free agent this summer. Bledsoe and the Suns eventually did come to terms, but it was an uneasy summer that inspired Dragic and Thomas’ frustrations. Now Knight, who just about plays the same position as Bledsoe (as was the case with Dragic and Thomas), will have his own turn.

Not before sitting for a bit to rest his dodgy left ankle. From Paul Coro at the Arizona Republic:

"From our standpoint, we need that to heal so I would guess he's out for the season," Suns coach Jeff Hornacek said.

Knight, 23, will be a restricted free agent in July, when the Suns will be able to re-sign him or match any offer sheet he signs with another team.

"I wish I could've been healthier throughout the process but that's part of basketball," Knight said.

Knight averaged 13.4 and 4.5 assists in 31 minutes a contest during his 11-game run with Phoenix, but he also shot 35 percent from the field and the Suns went 4-7 with him in the lineup.

The Suns gave up quite a bit to secure Knight, a first-round pick that belongs to the Los Angeles Lakers that could either turn into the sixth overall pick this June or the fourth overall in 2016, depending on lottery luck. The Suns did well to extract two first-rounders from the Miami Heat in exchange for an in-prime player in Goran Dragic that was certain to flee as a free agent in July, picks that could cripple the Heat on down the line, but the Suns won’t see those selections until 2019 and 2021.

Meanwhile, a shot at using the season’s final two months to determine whether or not Knight (who had a near-All-Star season in a weaker Eastern Conference for part of the season) and Bledsoe fit together was shot to bits by Knight’s ankle woes. The Suns might be pressed into committing an eight-figure yearly salary to a guy they saw play for 11 mostly-iffy games. Yes, the salary cap is rising and Knight just turned 23 – but the Suns nearly made Eric Bledsoe the fifth-highest paid point guard in the NBA last summer, and does he feel like a top five point guard?

Bledsoe has his rightful excuses for his relative stasis this year in needing to share the ball with Dragic and Thomas, and he certainly gave off top five potential last season, but the same good timing and good collectively bargained luck we thought the Suns would have on their side when negotiating with Bledsoe and then Knight might reverse to bite the Suns in the tail.

Of course, it’s not as if Phoenix is in salary cap hell. If Bledsoe develops into an All-Star he will be a bargain, as the Morris twins currently are at their combined rate of around $13 million a year in most seasons, and the team will have heaps of expiring contracts leaving the books this summer.

One of those belongs to Gerald Green, a player that seems to alternate bouts of charming and tantalizing play with entire seasons of disappointing his employers. The Suns are the next franchise on Green’s list, sadly.

Via Pro Basketball Talk, here’s Coro quoting Suns coach Jeff Hornacek:

"He never really seemed to get it going and then it comes to the point where, if you're not scoring and if your defense isn't picking up, it's hard to stay in the game," Hornacek said.

"The next guy is going, 'I needed help here and the guy wasn't here.' We're trying to develop something for the future, not just being out here for everybody to play in the game. We want to get to a top-notch winning level and you've got to do it on both sides."

Green sees the writing on the wall, as well:

"I want to be here but I just don't know if they want me here," Green said. "Because if you want somebody, you show them. I didn't think I was playing that bad and now we're here."

Gerald dropped 24 points in his last outing, a win over the Jazz, but he hardly sees that as a sign of things to come even with Knight heading to the sidelines:

“I don't really get excited about games any more because I don't know if I'm going to play. These type of games don't excite me any more. They don't give me confidence.

"I don't want to get too excited because I know the next game I might not play."

Hornacek did well in his initial turn as coach last season, creating excellent spacing and movement that was in place even without Dragic and Bledsoe diving to the basket incessantly, but he is not without his quirks. The decision to bench players as a rule after they were given a technical foul was widely ridiculed, and while Dragic’s undoing came at Goran’s own behest, Hornacek has still presided over what can be a chippy and sullen locker room.

There have been good signs in Phoenix, despite all this storm and stress. Bledsoe, a year after another meniscus surgery, stayed mostly healthy in 2014-15. Center Alex Len blossomed in his second season, the movement on offense was in place at times, and the team will have room to move financially even if Knight banks a big deal this offseason. Losing a potential top six or top four pick for 11 games (or the eventual overpayment) of Brandon Knight is worrying, but Suns general manager Ryan McDonough might be hailed as a genius in four and then six years for grabbing those first-rounders from Miami. There is porential here, even before those picks hit.

A lot of movement, and yet the Suns didn’t actually go anywhere in 12 months. That’s worrying. We’ll have to see how the next 12 go.

News sport : Reports: Illinois State assistant among those dead in a plane crash

A popular Illinois State assistant coach died tragically late Monday night.

Torrey Ward was one of seven people killed in a plane crash Monday night near Bloomington, Ill., according to multiple reports. The passengers aboard the private plane attended the national title game between Duke and Wisconsin in Indianapolis on Monday night but encountered heavy fog on their flight home.

A native of Birmingham, Ward played at UAB from 1997 to 2000, starting 74 games and helping the Blazers reach the NCAA tournament as a junior. He played professionally in China before stints as an assistant coach at Jacksonville State, Ole Miss and Illinois State.

Ward worked with Illinois State's big men the past few years, helping Jackie Carmichael earn all-conference honors in 2013 and developing Reggie Lynch into an all-conference center this past season. His haunting final tweet came from Monday's national title game.

Ward is survived by two young children, Torrey and Tamia.
