News sport : Paul George to return to the Indiana Pacers on Sunday

As long expected, Paul George will be making a spring return, hoping to save the Indiana Pacers’ season.

[DraftKings: FREE entry to huge cash Fantasy Basketball Contest with first deposit]

Here is what George, who broke his right leg in a gruesome accident during a Team USA scrimmage in August, put on Instagram on Saturday morning:

George was initially projected to miss the entire 2014-15 season.

The Pacers play the Miami Heat on Easter, in a matchup that could very well decide each team’s playoff fate. If Miami falls to the Detroit Pistons on Saturday evening, the Pacers could enter that contest just a game in back of the Heat for the final playoff seed in the Eastern Conference bracket. If the Pacers prevail in George’s return, the team will have tied Miami for that eighth seed with Indiana holding the tiebreaker advantage.

The top seed in the East a year ago, the Pacers have struggled in George’s absence, working up a 33-43 record with six games left to play in the 2014-15 season – all six presumably with George. Though the team did win 13 of 15 games at one point, the Pacers have lost nine of 12 since that run. George, a two-time All-Star, averaged 21.7 points and 6.8 rebounds last season.

Arsenal crush Liverpool

Arsenal delivered a brutal lesson in fast-paced football to beat Liverpool, maintaining their faint title aspirations.

|||

London - Arsenal delivered a brutal lesson in fast-paced Premier League football to beat Liverpool 4-1 on Saturday, maintaining their faint title aspirations and almost certainly dashing their opponents' hopes of a top-four finish.

While Liverpool's defending was catastrophic at times, Arsenal fizzed with intent and three goals in eight first-half minutes from Hector Bellerin, Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez and a late curler from Olivier Giroud secured a 10th Premier League win in 11 matches.

That moved them above Manchester City into second place on 63 points, four behind leaders Chelsea, who will be looking over their shoulders at their in-form London rivals even though Jose Mourinho's side have two games in hand.

Fifth-placed Liverpool, who netted a penalty through Jordan Henderson before Giroud's effort, now look out of the running in the battle for Champions League qualification after a second consecutive defeat.

A miserable afternoon for the visitors was capped off by a late red card for Emre Can and the result meant the gap to fourth place could be extended to eight points if Manchester United beat Aston Villa later on Saturday.

While much of the pre-match debate had focused on Liverpool forward Raheem Sterling's on-going contract impasse, within minutes of kickoff it was clear that more pressing issues lay with the visitors' defence.

Liverpool's back-three spent the opening minutes regularly gifting the ball to the hosts in dangerous areas and their only chance of the half was inexplicably wasted by Lazar Markovic, who tried and failed to pass to Sterling when through on goal.

The breakthrough came after 37 minutes when Bellerin was allowed time to cut inside the Liverpool box before curling a superb finish past Simon Mignolet.

Given their defending on the day it seemed remarkable that it was the first goal Liverpool had conceded on the road in more than nine hours after keeping six successive clean sheets.

Arsenal doubled the lead two minutes later when Ozil stepped up to curl a free kick around the wall and into the net and Sanchez smashed home from outside the box to make it 3-0.

The hosts would have increased their lead but for a stunning save from Mignolet to deny Giroud's header at the start of the second half before Liverpool were given a faint lifeline when Sterling was felled in the box.

Henderson squeezed his penalty past David Ospina with 14 minutes remaining.

Any hope of a comeback was extinguished, however, when Can received a second yellow card for a foul on substitute Danny Welbeck and Giroud added a coat of gloss when he curled in from 20 metres in stoppage time.

Its crunch time for EPL top four

Sudden, places two, three and four in the English Premier League have begun to look rather interchangeable.

|||

London - Some time in the next few weeks, Louis van Gaal has a lunch appointment with Sir Alex Ferguson.

On he expressed a tongue-in-cheek hope that Ferguson will pay but, more pertinently, the current United manager hopes to have some genuine and tangible progress to talk about.

Ferguson, it must be said, has waited a long time for such news. The United team he left to David Moyes moved only backwards while this season’s version has only occasionally appeared genuinely purposeful under Van Gaal.

Now, though, towards the end of this peculiar Barclays Premier League season, life at the business end of the table has become a little more interesting.

Successive United victories over Tottenham and Liverpool have left both those teams listing a little. In second, meanwhile, Manchester City, one senses, have stopped looking ahead and started to glance over their shoulder.

Saturday, for example, a win for United over Aston Villa would take Van Gaal’s team above City, who don’t play until Monday night’s engagement at Crystal Palace. Then, a week on Sunday, the two Manchester teams meet.

No wonder Van Gaal was sounding perky on Friday. All of a sudden, places two, three and four in the Premier League have begun to look rather interchangeable and it’s United who look in decent shape to benefit.

‘The comments of United legends are always important because they have a lot of fans,’ said Van Gaal on Friday when asked about Gary Neville’s suggestion that the recent United performance at Liverpool was one of the best he could remember.

‘And fans are listening to the legends so it’s nice for Manchester United. It’s nice for the players, and also nice for the manager when legends are saying that. But I think that if, for example, Sir Alex Ferguson says that then I am more proud because he can judge as a manager much better than ex- players what is the achievement in such a game.

‘Sir Alex is always on his way (travelling) so it’s difficult to speak with him. But we have made an appointment and he shall pay - that is very important!’

Back from a break in Amsterdam with his wife, Van Gaal looked ready for the challenges ahead. He remains cautious and understandably so.

His team have let him down before this season and United still have each of the current top three to play between now and mid-May.

Nevertheless, he is aware of problems that have currently mounted in front of Liverpool’s Brendan Rodgers since United beat his team 13 days ago and knows that defeat at Arsenal this lunchtime could all but end the Merseyside club’s challenge for fourth place.

All season United have been allowed to keep in touch with the top four simply because of other teams’ failings. Now Van Gaal has reason to hope his team’s improved form can take them somewhere more meaningful.

Asked if second place was now a realistic possibility, the United manager said: ‘Of course. I cannot deny that because we have Manchester City at home next week.

‘We have the strongest record at home so it’s possible. But Manchester City is a top team so it shall not be easy.

‘It’s better to be second or third. I would be pleased with fourth, but I want to be first. And my players want to be first. And when it’s not first, it’s second.’

For Rodgers and his staff, the last fortnight will have been a long one. Defeat is always harder to deal with - to move on from - when it is immediately followed by an international break.

If his team are to get the result they need at Arsenal on Saturday they will have done very well indeed, given the absence of the suspended Martin Skrtel and Steven Gerrard and injury concerns over striker Daniel Sturridge.

Arsenal remain well-placed. They have lost one domestic game in 14 since defeat at Southampton on New Year’s Day, leaving Manuel Pellegrini’s City team looking rather vulnerable in second place as they try to make something of a season that already has the word ‘disappointment’ written right through it.

On Friday, Van Gaal conceded that it was ‘mathematically possible’ for United to win the league.

That is a fanciful notion and he knows it but he and everybody else associated with the club would certainly enjoy the sense of discomfort City will undoubtedly feel if they find themselves looking at the backs of United’s heads by the close of play tonight.

City only have themselves to blame for what may yet become something of a predicament. United have, by common consensus, been scratchy at best this season but if City find themselves in their wake tonight then what does that say about them?

At the root of all this, of course, is that this remains a rather average Premier League. It contains only one very good side and they, Chelsea, have waned themselves a little recently. From a morass of mediocrity, however, somebody could yet benefit.

Van Gaal will only hope that he is on course for an interesting lunch with the one man who has seen it all, and much more, many times before.

Toure warns Sterling not to leave LFC

Kolo Toure has warned Raheem Sterling that leaving Liverpool could see him end up on the scrapheap at a big club.

|||

London - Kolo Toure has warned Raheem Sterling that leaving Liverpool could see him end up on the scrapheap at a big club, similar to the way Jack Rodwell and Scott Sinclair did at Manchester City.

Sterling stunned Liverpool earlier this week, giving an interview confirming that he has turned down a new £100 000-a-week contract and admitting he is “quite flattered” by interest from Arsenal. Chelsea and Manchester City are also keen on English football’s hottest property.

But Toure, who used to play for City with Rodwell and Sinclair, has warned his Anfield teammate a move to one of European football’s heavyweights may not be everything he has dreamed of.

Rodwell joined City in a £12m deal in 2012, while Sinclair made the same move from Swansea City for a £8m fee later that year.

The English pair made just nine Premier League appearances between them across two seasons at the Etihad Stadium.

Rodwell joined relegation-threatened Sunderland last year to end his City nightmare while Sinclair is trying to rebuild his career at Aston Villa, and Toure says Sterling could be making a similar mistake by leaving Anfield.

“Both Rodwell and Sinclair went to a club where there is big competition and didn’t play,” Toure said.

“If Raheem left Liverpool he wouldn’t be sure to start games. Make a mistake or don’t score for two games and he will be on the bench. There is no messing at clubs like that.”

Brendan Rodgers used his pre-match press conference ahead of Saturday’s trip to Arsenal to reiterate that Sterling was not for sale, and Toure sees Liverpool as the perfect place for the 20-year-old to continue his development.

“I’m not surprised there’s speculation because everybody would want to have a player like him,’ he told the Liverpool Echo. “But he needs to stay here. Liverpool is a great place for him.

“This is definitely the best place for him to continue his development. At Liverpool, he’s beginning to be one of the most important players. He’s playing every week.

“If he went to another club there would be big challenges he would face. He wouldn’t be the most important player.”

Chelsea joined the race to sign England star Sterling, with the Premier League leaders wanting to be kept informed of any developments in his contract situation.

Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are also monitoring the developments in his contract stand-off at Anfield.

Doubts over Arsenal’s ability to fund a move have seen their interest questioned, but they are confident they have the financial firepower to compete for him with the likes of Chelsea and City.

Liverpool boss Rodgers said on Thursday: “He’s got two-and-a-half years to go on his deal and he’s not going anywhere in the summer.

“I cannot speak for the owners but I have a good idea of what they would do.

“I know them well enough and for me it would not happen. Liverpool are one of the superpowers of football and the owners have made it clear that money doesn’t come into it.

“If the club doesn’t want to sell, it won’t sell, it’s as simple as that. Money has never been the objective for the club.

“Whatever player - Raheem or anybody - it would always be on the terms of the club.

“He still has two-and-a-bit years left of his deal so it’s not something we’re overly concerned about. I’m confident that at the end of the season we’ll find the solution.”

Ajax match could hinge on tall strikers

The outcome of the clash between Platinum Stars and Ajax CT could well hinge on which tall striker is more effective.

|||

Cape Town - The outcome of Saturday night’s Premier Soccer League (PSL) fixture between Platinum Stars and Ajax Cape Town could well hinge on which tall striker is more effective over the 90 minutes.

The two sides meet at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg on Saturday evening (kick-off 8.15pm) - and, with Ajax’s Nathan Paulse and Platinum’s Eleazar Rodgers in the mix, defenders in both teams are in for a torrid time.

Both players are 1.9 metres tall, they unsettle markers, are very good in the air and, importantly, their respective sides rely on them to set up scoring opportunities and bring teammates into the game.

Paulse missed Ajax’s last fixture - a 1-0 Nedbank Cup win over Bloemfontein Celtic - through suspension, so he is eager to get back into the thick of things. The 32-year-old forward had been out injured before returning to the starting team a few weeks ago. He has been influential for the team and is looking to again be the man to ensure Ajax come away with victory on what is likely to be a difficult road trip.

The Capetonians have not done well on the road. But their last away fixture - 2-1 against SuperSport United last month - resulted in a win, and Paulse believes that it could be the start of better times.

“Look, we all know our away form has not been great, not only this season but over the last few years,” said Paulse. “But I think the attitude is starting to change… the players are a lot more committed on the road. They are aware of our dismal record and they are determined to change it.”

Athlone-born Paulse came through the Ajax academy and has gone on to enjoy a successful career as a professional footballer. After making his PSL debut for the Cape club in 2000, he played with merit at Hammarby in Sweden and also enjoyed spells at Bloem Celtic, Platinum and SuperSport.

His return to Ajax two years ago was always on the cards - it’s a club he loves with a passion. And he is also now revelling in his role as a senior pro, guiding, advising and nurturing the youngsters in the Ajax squad.

“I am sure we are in for a tough outing against Platinum,” said Paulse. “They have some quality footballers… we all know what Eleazar is capable of. He is from Cape Town and also spent last season on loan with us. They also have Robert Ngambi, and they’ve brought in some good players, like Bryce Moon, Punch Masenamela and Tlou Segolela.

“But we’ve been doing well recently and it’s certainly going to be an intriguing game. The two teams are fighting on opposite ends of the PSL table - Platinum are at the bottom, battling relegation or a promotion play-off spot, while we are in the top half, wanting to secure a top-eight finish.

“I’m just happy to be back after missing the last game through suspension. I’m keen to get back and contribute to the team in whatever form the coach deems fit. Platinum, especially away from home, will be a huge test for us, but we are confident we can go there and get something from the match.”

Saturday: AmaZulu v Free State Stars; Maritzburg United v SuperSport United; Platinum Stars v Ajax Cape Town (Royal Bafokeng, 8.15pm); Polokwane City v Wits

Van Persie not ready for derby

Man United forward Robin van Persie is unlikely to be fit for the derby match against Man City, Louis van Gaal said.

|||

London - Manchester United forward Robin van Persie is unlikely to be fit for the Premier League derby match against Manchester City later this month, manager Louis van Gaal said on Friday.

The 31-year-old has missed the last five games with an ankle problem suffered in the 2-1 defeat at Swansea City on Feb. 21.

The Dutchman has already been ruled out of this Saturday's league game at home to Aston Villa and asked if he would be fit to face City on April 12, Van Gaal said: “I don't think so.

“The process has to give me signals he is ready for that but I know that from my experience it is not like that.”

Van Gaal earlier told MUTV that Van Persie was recovering along with left back Luke Shaw, who has been out with a hamstring injury.

“Robin is coming back on the (training) pitch and Luke Shaw has already had a week on there but match rhythm is very important,” said Van Gaal.

“You cannot compare a player who has been out for four or five weeks to those that have sufficient match rhythm.”

Van Gaal explained later in his news conference: “We have a process for injured players in the medical department, they then go to a football coach for tests and then to me.

“Robin still isn't with the football coach. He's still not in my group. Luke Shaw is in my group, that's different, but Van Persie isn't available.”

United are fourth in the standings with 59 points from 30 games, a point behind Arsenal and two adrift of City. Chelsea, who United visit on April 18, are top with 67 points.

News sport : NBA Playoff Picture Update: The race for the West's No. 8 is back on

MEMPHIS, TN - APRIL 3: Jeff Green #32 of the Memphis Grizzlies prepares to shoot a free throw against the Oklahoma City Thunder on April 3, 2015 at FedExForum in Memphis, Tennessee. (Photo by Joe Murphy/NBAE via Getty Images) With just about two weeks remaining until the NBA postseason, every night can impact the standings. NBA Playoff Picture keeps you up to date on all the most important news for all 16 berths and seeds.

Thunder Struck: The Oklahoma City Thunder are now on official alert. After appearing to have the franchise's sixth-straight playoff berth all but sewn up a week ago, the Thunder have dropped four of their last five to let the New Orleans Pelicans back into the race. Their latest loss came on Friday at the Memphis Grizzlies by a score of 100-92, an understandable result that unfortunately comes at a bad time for OKC.

It was a fairly typical performance for a Memphis team that looks much improved after three rough losses to title contenders last week. The Grizzlies got balanced scoring (six players in double figures, led by Jeff Green with 22 points) while forcing the Thunder into bad shots and 40.9 percent shooting from the field. Russell Westbrook especially struggled with 18 points on very poor efficiency (5-of-20 FG, 0-of-3 3FG, 8-of-13 FT). Enes Kanter did well for the Thunder (24 points and 17 rebounds), but he was the only major bright spot despite the relatively narrow eight-point margin.

The Grizzlies are now back in a tie with the Houston Rockets for the No. 2 seed in the West but lose the tiebreaker (for now) via their inferior record (8-7 < 7-6) in the Southwest Division. This race is currently changing by the day, depending on which teams play, and looks likely to keep going until the season's final few days.

The Thunder's loss combined with the Pelicans' win (more on that in the next section) to give them just a half-game lead in the race for the West's final playoff spot. OKC's struggles are understandable — three of their four recent losses came against playoff teams — but they are nonetheless concerning for a team that needs every win it can get right now. Things won't get any easier for the Thunder their next time out, because they host the Rockets on Sunday.

Marching In: The New Orleans Pelicans have burst back into the playoff picture with four straight wins, the latest coming 101-95 on Friday at the Sacramento Kings. The Pelicans built a 14-point halftime lead, in part due to this Quincy Pondexter buzzer-beater ...

... but saw the Kings fight back in the second half behind DeMarcus Cousins's second-straight triple-double (24 points, 20 rebounds, 13 assists, four blocks). Yet the Pelicans pulled it out with balanced scoring (four scorers with at least 18 points) and forced bad shots from the Kings in the final minutes.

At a half-game back of the Thunder, the Pelicans can pull even (and take No. 8 via their 3-1 season-series advantage) with a win Saturday at the Portland Trail Blazers. That will be a serious challenge, because their four consecutive wins have come against the three worst teams in the West. The Pelicans are a contender again, but they'll have to prove they belong in the postseason.

Pau Is Very Excited to Win: The Chicago Bulls withstood a Detroit Pistons comeback to come away from the Palace of Auburn Hills with an 88-82 win. Pau Gasol iced the game with an emphatic putback and-one dunk. With the Raptors having lost earlier in the night, the Bulls opened up a full-game lead for the No. 3 seed.

Nets Gain: Toronto lost because they played the Brooklyn Nets, suddenly the hottest team in the conference. Brooklyn's 114-109 victory gave them six in a row and 10 of their last 12, good enough to lift them to the No. 7 seed in the conference at one game ahead of the Miami Heat.

More Contenders, In Theory: Three teams sit just out of the No. 8 spot in the East, although they aren't exactly playing well enough to deserve it. The Indiana Pacers dominated the Charlotte Bobcats 93-74 to leapfrog them into 10th place, although they're still 1 1/2 games behind the Heat with only six left to play. Plus, both teams will have to pass the Boston Celtics, who remained in ninth but broke their ostensible tie with the Miami Heat by losing to the comfortably No. 6 Milwaukee Bucks 110-101. None of these teams look particularly good right now, but a few more losses by Miami could allow them to sneak in.

The Rest: In the West, the surging San Antonio Spurs blew out the Denver Nuggets 123-93 on the strength of an absurd 45-point first quarter to notch their 50th win of the season. That's now 16-straight seasons in which the Spurs have won at least 50 games. At 50-26, the Spurs are tied with the Los Angeles Clippers for fifth in the West but occupy the No. 6 spot due to a significant four-game deficit in the conference record tiebreaker.

However, the Spurs are a half-game better than the No. 4 seed Portland Trail Blazers, who handled the Los Angeles Lakers to clinch the Northwest Divison. That title is important, because they now officially cannot fall below the No. 4 seed no matter their record, even though they would still surrender homecourt advantage to a No. 5 seed with a superior record. (No, you're right, that is not intuitive at all.)

In the East, the No. 5 Washington Wizards beat the lowly New York Knicks 101-87 to draw within two games of the Raptors. Toronto has already clinched the Atlantic Division but could feasibly give up homecourt advantage with a sustained slump.

Saturday's Most Important Games

Nets at Hawks, 7:00 p.m. ET: The Hawks have not taken their games especially seriously since clinching the East and could easily fall victim to the Nets. If that happens, then Brooklyn will be in prime position to hold down a playoff spot, thereby justifying some of the cost of keeping Joe Johnson.

Heat at Pistons, 7:30 p.m. ET: Miami needs to win as many games as possible but could be without Dwyane Wade, who suffered a supposedly minor left knee bruise in Thursday's loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Pistons nearly beat the Bulls on Friday and could easily play spoiler.

Celtics at Raptors, 7:30 p.m. ET: Both teams need wins — the Celtics to put pressure on and potentially pass the Heat, the Raptors to draw within a half-game of the idle Bulls.

Wizards at Grizzlies, 8:00 p.m. ET: It's hard to imagine Washington ending up anywhere other than at No. 5 in the East, but the Grizzlies can pass the Rockets in the race for the No. 2 seed and put pressure on their rivals to top the Thunder in Sunday's opening ABC game.

Pelicans at Blazers, 10:00 p.m. ET: The best game of the day also has the most stakes. The Pelicans can tie the Thunder and become the No. 8 team in the West with a win, while the Blazers can match the Spurs at 50-26 and possibly pass the Clippers (they play at the Denver Nuggets). Tying the Spurs' record matters, because Portland holds any tiebreakers for homecourt advantage via their division title.

News sport : John Stockton on coaching his daughter's team at H.S. Nationals

NBA Hall of Famer John Stockton traveled to Middle Village, New York, this week to help coach his daughter's team in the DICKS Sporting Goods High School Nationals. Laura Stockton is a senior at Gonzaga Prep (Spokane, Wash.)

Having the former Utah Jazz star on the bench didn't help the Bullpups advance to the title – the team fell 60-59 to Miami Country Day in the semifinals on Friday – but nonetheless, the proud dad said it was, "one of the greatest experiences of my life.”

“I don’t know if coaching girls is always like this, but this group has been amazing,” Stockton said, according to USA Today. “They’ve been completely open to coaching and they all really want to learn. And they aren’t afraid to put the hard work in to get better.”

Laura will play at Gonzaga next year. Stockton raved about having the opportunity to share the experience with her.

“(Laura) is really special,” he said. “Obviously I’m going to say that as a proud Dad, but she really is. She’s a special player, she’s a special person. And we’ve been able to do a lot of things together, a lot of memories on the court, a lot of long car trips to little towns in Washington. It’s been great.”

It's hard to imagine the coaches at Gonzaga would deny him the chance to at least help out at a few practices, should he want to keep making memories on the court.

News sport : Phil Jackson on the 2014-15 New York Knicks: '[Bleep] happens'

Phil Jackson, a baby boomer that grew up in an era that was replete with brusque bumper stickers, decided to rely on one in order to describe the miserable season that his New York Knicks are about to wrap up:

[DraftKings: FREE entry to huge cash Fantasy Basketball Contest with first deposit]

“S--- happens,” Jackson said to laughter. “That’s something that we all know. . . . And this season it did happen to us.”

The comment was made in a discussion with Knick season ticket holders and various scenemakers that rank above the Madison Square Garden hoi polloi. As he usually does, the Knicks president matched the nasty bits with his usual sense of Jackson-ese:

“This is something that I know about, something I’ve had success with, how people sublimate their game and their ego for the betterment of the goal and the good of the goal. It’s a gestalt idea.”

Of course, building a team that produces as a unit greater than the sum of its parts is tough to do when you essentially punt the season midway through, or trade a defensive-minded center in Tyson Chandler for a big man you’d eventually waive, and a point guard in Jose Calderon that seems at odds with your ball movement-heavy offense.

In the talk, Jackson talked up acquiring a Tyson Chandler-esque center as he approaches his scouting turn at the NCAA Final Four:

“I think it’s gonna be worth watching,” Jackson said. “A draft pick can move an entire organization forward.”

[…]

Notably, Jackson also admitted “a good starting point would be a guy like (former Knick) Tyson Chandler, a defensive (big man).”

From the New York Post:

When asked if he knows whom he would draft with the top pick, should the Knicks win the draft lottery, Jackson said, “I do.”

Jackson, you’ll recall, is not allowed to discuss undeclared draft prospects by name – as is the case with all NBA executives and coaches currently, regardless of what will likely be a 2015 NBA draft full of underclassmen. Jackson was reminded this (or, perhaps, as also is his custom he gave zero expletives) when he was fined by the NBA after briefly discussing Ohio State freshman D’Angelo Russell on record.

New York is 14-61 and has the NBA’s worst record. If the lottery odds hold up, the team will have the top pick in the draft. The team isn’t guaranteed the first selection, it has a three in four chance of losing it, but lottery rules make it so the Knicks can’t drop below third in the draft. Kentucky freshman Karl-Anthony Towns’ season isn’t even over yet, and he obviously hasn’t declared for this year’s draft; his length, however, defensive ability, athleticism and even ability to pass adeptly and make free throws possibly has Jackson drooling as he readies for his first real draft.

(Of course, there is always the chance that Phil could go goofy and essentially draft what could be an All-Star version of himself in Willie Cauley-Stein.)

Phil Jackson is being paid handsomely to bottom out and punt the 2014-15 NBA season, and while he should have to answer to ticket holders, he should hardly have to answer to Knicks owner James Dolan – a man who previously squandered hundreds of millions of dollars on foolishly-built Knick teams for over a decade.

With that in place, none of the questions we asked of Phil Jackson 13 months ago have been answered.

He’s right to be frank about how his initial attempts at team-building have gone, but he also has the built-in excuse of demolishing a mediocre (at best) team and the patience a proper turnaround requires. Several other NBA teams are similarly attempting to bottom out in order to start over, including Phil’s former Los Angeles Lakers, but none of those teams openly copped to playoff potential prior to the season. This delay shields Jackson from most criticism.

Most alarmingly, both the Knicks and Lakers (despite their billion dollar price tags) work with skinflint front offices while hardly acting bothered long enough to learn new information that might challenge notions they’ve had about the game for four decades. At least we have higher basketball respect for Jackson’s crew, which includes Clarence Gaines Jr. and Steve Mills, and at least Jackson will go on record – unlike his former combatant in Los Angeles, Jim Buss.

Even after potentially drafting a teenager this June, Jackson will have to start moving up the standings quickly after his season gone amiss. Different s--- has to start happening, and soon.

News sport : Frank Kaminsky, John Calipari receive AP's player, coach of the year awards

For the first time since the Associated Press began handing out college basketball awards in the 1960s, a Final Four game will pit the AP's Player of the Year opposite its Coach of the Year.

[DraftKings: Play Fantasy College Basketball – Draft your team today!]

Of course, Wisconsin forward Frank Kaminsky and Kentucky coach John Calipari have met in the Final Four before, as Calipari's Wildcats upset Kaminsky's Badgers in the national semifinals last season, but not with such impressive individual hardware in their trophy cases. Within hours of each other on Friday, Kaminsky was named AP Player of the Year and Calipari accepted the organization's Coach of the Year award.

An unheralded prep basketball recruit who played just 7.7 minutes a night as a Wisconsin freshman, Kaminsky captured Player of the Year honors as a senior upon averaging 18.7 points, 8.0 rebounds, 2.7 rebounds during the Badgers' second straight trip to the Final Four. He has shot 54.9 percent from the field and 41.5 percent from 3-point range, anchoring an offense that has scored 80.5 points per game. Kaminsky is the first player in the university's history to win college basketball's most presitigious award.

Calipari, the smooth-talking coach with the 2012 NCAA title and six Final Four appearances with three diffferent schools to his name, has taken a different route to his first Coach of the Year award. The 55-year-old will be on the bench for his fourth national semifinal in six seasons with the Wildcats — none more impressive than this campaign, even if he warranted consideration for the award during his stays at UMass and Memphis, where his sole Final Four appearance with each school has since been vacated.

Calipari puts a 38-0 record and a shot at a third national championship game in four years on the line against Kaminsky this Saturday. The last time the AP Player of the Year and Coach of the Year appeared in such a high-profile game together was the 1979 title tilt, when POY Larry Bird and COY Bill Hodges were on the same Indiana State sideline. The Sycamores entered that game with a perfect record, too.

News sport : Ezekiel Elliott says crop-top rule seems 'like a silly rule'

When the NCAA banned players from rolling their jerseys up under their pads for the 2015 season, Ezekiel Elliott endorsed a petition to reverse the rule. After all, the Ohio State running back was one of the players the rule effects, as Elliott likes to roll his jersey up.

Thursday, he called the rule "silly."

"It does seem like a silly rule,” Elliott said via the Toledo Blade. “But it's something you can't make a big deal about. It's just a jersey. I love the game of football, and that's such a minute detail. It's funny to see how much the fans love it.”

The petition he retweeted has over 9,000 signatures. And one of them is Elliott's. He said with a laugh that his name was on it.

He also said that he got the cast off his injured left wrist on Monday. Elliott spent the entire 2014 season with a broken wrist and carried the ball exclusively in his right hand. After the cast's departure, he said it'll be a six-week process of getting mobility and strength back in the wrist. So while he's slowed for spring practice, he'll be ready for the 2015 season.

"I can feel [my wrist] getting better but right now it is really small and real weak and I have a little bit of pain here and there and the bone is not fully healed," Elliott said via BuckeyeGrove.com. "Like I said, I still have six more weeks until I am 100-percent."

He was also a bit understated when describing the near-700 yards he accumulated in the final three games of the season as Ohio State won the national title.

"I think I finished on a good note," Elliott said. "The whole team came out and we were just a different team those last three games, we got better every week with the line blocking like that it was pretty easy to do what I did."

News sport : Report: Florida State CB P.J. Williams arrested for DUI

Potential first-round pick P.J. Williams, a cornerback out of Florida State, reportedly was arrested for DUI Friday morning according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Albert Breer.

Williams had worked out well at Florida State's pro day this week, although scouts came away knowing that fellow Seminoles corner Ronald Darby was the better athlete of the two. The 6-0, 194-pound Williams did test well at the NFL scouting combine with great numbers with the vertical (40 inches) and broad jumps (132).

Now scouts, GMs and NFL teams have more to consider. Williams' arrest this close to the draft could raise big red flags for teams, and his stock could tumble.

Williams had another run-in with the law in October, according to the New York Times, leaving the scene of an accident but appeared to get off light from police with only traffic tickets issued.

Although it's not considered an incredibly deep crop of cornerbacks, it would be shocking to see him taken high now, and it could push him to the third day of the draft.
