Arsenal, Liverpool focus on points

The Premier League bursts back into life this weekend with Arsenal and Liverpool clashing in a potential FA Cup final dress rehearsal.

|||

London - The Premier League bursts back into life after the international break this weekend with Arsenal and Liverpool clashing in a potential FA Cup final dress rehearsal in the early kick-off at the Emirates on Saturday.

Although the two teams are the favourites to meet in the Cup final at Wembley at the end of May, of more immediate concern to both will be the three points at stake on Saturday.

Victory for Arsenal would maintain their unlikely late challenge for the title, while a Liverpool win would rekindle their hopes of a top-four finish after their last match before the break ended in a 2-1 home defeat by Manchester United.

Arsenal have won their last six league matches and halved the gap on leaders Chelsea from 14 points on Feb. 10 to seven now and a win for the Gunners would lift them into second place, at least until Manchester City play at Crystal Palace on Monday.

Chelsea, leaders since late August, host Stoke City, managed by the London club's ex-striker Mark Hughes, in Saturday's late match and anything other than a home win would be a major upset.

Chelsea have played 29 matches, one fewer than all of the chasing pack, and are on 67 points, with second-placed City on 61, Arsenal with 60 and Manchester United on 59.

On Saturday, United host Aston Villa, who have looked a better side since Tim Sherwood took over as manager from Paul Lambert six weeks ago but are still involved in the relegation fight. United should chalk up a fifth successive league win.

While Liverpool, who are fifth on 54 points, will be hoping to stay in touch with the leading quartet, both Southampton and Totttenham will look to overtake them if they should slip up.

Saints and Spurs are both a point behind Liverpool with the former travelling to erratic Everton and the latter visiting relegation-threatened Burnley.

Spurs had four players - Harry Kane, Ryan Mason, Kyle Walker and goalscorer Andros Townsend - in the England team that drew 1-1 with Italy on Tuesday.

They will be hoping for a third win in four over Burnley this season after beating them in an FA Cup third round replay in January.

Kane, meanwhile, who has scored 29 goals for Tottenham this season including a hat-trick against Leicester City last time out, needs one more goal to become the first Spurs player since Gary Lineker in 1991-92 to hit 30 goals in a season. – Reuters

News sport : No further WWE plans for Ronda Rousey after her WrestleMania appearance

UFC champion Ronda Rousey sent the sports entertainment world into a tizzy with her well-publicized in-ring appearance over the weekend at WrestleMania 31.

Unfortunately for fans (of the WWE at least), they won’t be seeing Rousey in a squared circle again anytime soon.

Rousey’s agent, Brad Slater, told UFC Tonight on Wednesday that no further plans were being discussed for her to take part in any WWE programming, now, or in the future. Slater made clear that Rousey is focused and currently preparing for her looming showdown with Bethe Correia at UFC 190 later this summer in Brazil.

The news puts to rest days of speculation after Rousey teamed with legendary performer Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson on Sunday’s year-end spectacular. “Rowdy” was pulled from the crowd to confront antagonists Triple H and Stephanie McMahon. What ensued was a fun bit of back and forth between everyone, ending with “Rowdy” showcasing some of her signature judo skills on the bad guys.

After the surprise appearance, on what some may call ‘competitor’ television, speculation ran wild as to Rousey’s future intentions with the WWE. Furthering fodder were dual social media posts from The Rock and Rousey teasing at a potential pairing down the line at some point. The Wrestling Observer’s Dave Meltzer reported that a possible in-ring tag-team of the entertainment behemoths was even being discussed for next year’s WrestleMania 32 in Dallas, Texas.

But if the WWE is looking to get 100,000 fans in Dallas next spring, as publicly stated, they likely will not be doing it with the UFC superstar’s help.

News sport : Anthony Davis says he'd vote for James Harden as the NBA's Most Valuable Player

You know how you can tell Anthony Davis is a good egg? Given the chance to name himself as the person he'd vote for as the NBA's 2015 Most Valuable Player — a case that's certainly got its merits, what with the league-leading Player Efficiency Rating that's tied for the ninth-best ever , the insane "clutch" numbers, the elite shot-blocking and top-notch rim protection, the fact that the only two bigs in NBA history this productive this young were Shaq and Bob McAdoo, and so on — he didn't do it. (What a nice young man.)

[DraftKings: FREE entry to huge cash Fantasy Basketball Contest with first deposit]

Instead, during a Monday visit to "The Dan Patrick Show," the New Orleans Pelicans big man cast his hypothetical MVP ballot for Houston Rockets shooting guard James Harden.

"You know, it's tough," Davis said. "There's a lot of guys playing out of their minds. James Harden, Russ[ell Westbrook], Steph[en Curry], you know, LeBron [James]. But ... [long pause] I mean, James Harden. It'd probably have to be James. He's out of his mind. He's definitely playing out of his mind. We talk about this with my team every day. Like, every day."

Davis gave Harden his nod due in large part to the burden the bearded playmaker has had to carry in propelling the Rockets to a 50-24 record despite the laundry list of injuries that Houston has suffered this season, headlined by the right knee injury that has limited star center Dwight Howard to just 35 games this season.

"I think, with him not having Dwight for as long as he did, he's still competing, still winning games for them," Davis said. "It's unreal. We kind of say, you take one player out of each team and see who would have the most effect [to figure out] who would be MVP. I think just the way James is playing, I think he'd definitely get his way."

Not that it's an easy decision, of course.

Stephen Curry continues to stand out as the best player on not only the best team in basketball, but a historically good Golden State Warriors squad that ranks first in the league in both offensive and defensive efficiency, and is outscoring its opposition by nearly twice as much as the next-closest contender. (Plus, he's killing teams early enough to make fourth-quarter numbers sort of meaningless.)

Russell Westbrook puts up regular triple-doubles and has averaged just under 31 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds per game over the past two months for an Oklahoma City Thunder team that's been even more beset by injuries than Harden's Rockets and still has to fight tooth and nail just to scrape its way into a playoff spot.

There are a bunch of worthy candidates, all of whom merit serious consideration, as Davis understands.

"It's tough," Davis repeated. "It's going to be great to see who gets it. All three guys — James, Steph and Russ — are playing out of their minds right now. Especially Russ."

And that doesn't even factor in two veteran regulars in the MVP chase who've got great arguments, too. LeBron James ranks third in the league in scoring, seventh in assists and fifth in PER; the Cleveland Cavaliers are 46-18 with him in the lineup and 2-9 without him. Chris Paul leads one of the NBA's two-best offenses, might be the league's best perimeter defender, carried the Los Angeles Clippers through five weeks without Blake Griffin, and has scarcely gotten any recognition for it. And Davis himself, as noted above, is having one of the most remarkable individual campaigns for a man of his size and age ever, even as his likewise-injury-plagued Pelicans seem likely to find themselves outside the West's top eight.

[Follow Dunks Don't Lie on Tumblr: The best slams from all of basketball]

There seem, then, to be quite a few defensible positions when it comes to making your MVP pick. Whether enough voters share Davis' view to make Harden the first Rocket to hoist the Podoloff since Hakeem Olajuwon in 1994, though, remains to be seen.

I'm no money-grabber, says Sterling

Liverpool forward Raheem Sterling has denied he is a “money-grabbing 20-year-old”, but is in no rush to sign a new contract.

|||

London - Liverpool forward Raheem Sterling has denied he is a “money-grabbing 20-year-old”, but is in no rush to sign a new contract, he told the BBC on Wednesday.

England international Sterling has been offered an eye-watering 100 000 pounds ($148 300) a week to sign a new deal with Liverpool, according to media reports, but has yet to commit his future to the club.

He says, however, that money is not a determining factor and ruled out discussing a new contract until at least the end of the season.

“It's not about the money at all,” Sterling said.

“It's never been about money. I talk about winning trophies throughout my career. That's all I talk about...

“I don't talk about how many cars I'm going to drive, how many houses I've got. I just purely want to be the best I can be.

“I don't want to be perceived as a money-grabbing 20-year-old. I just want to be seen as a kid who loves to play football and to do the best for the team.”

Liverpool last won a trophy in 2012 when they claimed the League Cup, but came agonisingly close to lifting the league title last season, before being pipped by Manchester City.

Sterling says he would have signed a new deal with Liverpool had an offer been on the table last year.

“If, at that point in time, I was offered a contract, I most definitely would have signed straight away, probably for far less money than being said now,” he said. “I just think the timing was a bit off.”

With just two years to run on his current deal, which media reports estimate to be worth around 35,000 pounds per week, speculation has begun to grow that Sterling is eyeing a future away from Merseyside.

He denies, however, that he is distracted by the whirring rumour mill.

“I try to kill it off, but I don't think the public can see it that way,” he said. “I think they just see it as this 20-year-old boy being greedy.

“I just want to take the time to think about what I've achieved in my career so far, where I need to go and what I need to do to get better as a player.”

Liverpool, who are fifth in the Premier League table, face third-placed Arsenal on Saturday.

News sport : Former USC player Armond Armstead settles lawsuit with USC

Armond Armstead and USC have settled his lawsuit against the school, a team doctor and a medical center.

The former Trojan defensive end was suing because he said he suffered a heart attack in 2011 due to the overuse of Toradol. The painkiller was prescribed by USC's team doctor, James Tibone, who said in a court deposition that he didn't agree with the FDA cardiovascular warnings regarding the drug.

Terms of the settlement were not released. Armstead missed the 2011 season and was an undrafted free agent after he wasn't selected in the 2012 NFL draft.

“He believes that these athletes in particular are too often in a vulnerable position, without the resources or information necessary to make informed decisions regarding the use of Toradol, especially in game day circumstances where the drug might be used to get a player on the field in spite of an injury, when more conservative medical care might be more appropriate for the long term health of the student athlete,” Roger Dreyer, Armstead's lawyer, said in a statement via InsideSoCal.com.

Per Tibone's deposition, he also said he used his own judgment when it came to Toradol injections. After he was diagnosed with costochondritis in February 2011, Armstead was then diagnosed in March with a heart attack, a possible side effect of Toradol use. Armstead also said in court documents he had a second heart attack in 2014 while with the Patriots. He retired from football in July.

News sport : Blake Griffin wishes Clippers fans got louder: 'Home-court advantage is just not there for us'

Blake Griffin would love to hear a more raucous home crowd. (Harry How/Getty Images) The Golden State Warriors beat the Los Angeles Clippers on Tuesday night, despite having nothing significant to play for after clinching the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference over the weekend, despite sitting starting power forward Draymond Green and despite a 40-point, 12-rebound, five-assist explosion by Blake Griffin in his best game since returning from elbow surgery. The Warriors came back from a 17-point first-half deficit to win their 10th straight game, improve their league-best record to 61-13, and move to a sterling 27-11 record away from the friendly confines of Oracle Arena.

[DraftKings: FREE entry to huge cash Fantasy Basketball Contest with first deposit]

Then again, Staples Center wasn't exactly a brutal environment for the boys in blue on Tuesday. In fact, as Stephen Curry headed to the foul line for a pair of critical lead-padding free throws in the closing seconds, a smattering of "M-V-P" chants could be heard coming down from the stands in the Clippers' gym:

Yes, Clippers fans eventually rose up to drown out the chants with boos, but the moment seemed to encapsulate an evening-long trend. In a late-season battle between two long-beefing rivals that had significant playoff implications for the Clippers, the hometown team at times seemed to be playing at a neutral site, listening to what sounded like a pretty raucous Staples crowd featuring a host of Dubs fans celebrating the visitors' play nearly as much as their own.

It's safe to say that Griffin noticed.

From Arash Markazi of ESPN Los Angeles:

"Home-court advantage is just not there for us," Griffin said after the game. "If that's how it feels in the playoffs, it's not looking good."

Warriors fans made Staples Center sound more like Oracle Arena on Tuesday night. They loudly cheered every made basket by Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson, and chanted "M-V-P" when Curry was at the free throw line, causing several Clippers players to look up into the stands and shake their heads.

"I don't know what we could do, but it would be great if it wasn't that way," said Griffin, who had 40 points in the loss. "It's kind of like when we play the Lakers. I don't know, maybe worse. It's one of those things where it would be great if it wasn't like that."

The All-Star power forward wasn't the only Clipper who heard the in-Staples split. From Andrew Flohr of Warriors blog Golden State of Mind:

When asked about the crowd, Doc Rivers smiled and admitted to a significant split, saying "I love our crowd, I didn't like their crowd."

[Follow Dunks Don't Lie on Tumblr: The best slams from all of basketball]

To be fair, the Warriors did sort of a lot of the type of cool stuff that makes fans — yours, theirs, somebody else's, it doesn't matter — stand up and cheer. The highlight, of course, was Curry's second-quarter behind-the-back double-cross on Chris Paul, presented here in luscious Phantom-Cam slow-motion:

It was a move that sent the Warriors' bench reeling, had the entire house begging for Jumbotron replays, launched what Andrew Bogut accurately predicted would "be a lot of memes" (including a Twister Photoshop that made even Paul himself laugh) and prompted perhaps the best perimeter defender in the NBA to say, "Luckily for me, we do not play one-on-one every night".

Here's the damnedest thing is: Steph didn't just stop doing cool stuff after that. He got CP3 again in the third quarter, as the Warriors continued their comeback:

... and he hit an absolutely unfair catch-and-shoot triple with Paul draped all over him to give Golden State its first lead of the game a few minutes later:

And Curry wasn't the only Warrior who put a charge into the Clippers' crowd. Marreese Speights absolutely hammered one home on the unfortunately-ill-equipped-to-protect-the-rim Glen Davis, eliciting absolutely understandable oohs and aahs from the peanut gallery:

I mean, of course you're going to get neutrals, nonpartisans and even a fair amount of hometown fans who just love it when cool stuff happens to respond positively to plays like that. It'd be more surprising if people didn't go nuts for them.

That said, this isn't the first time in recent memory a Staples crowd has fallen somewhat short of the Clippers' expectations.

Griffin and Paul bemoaned the fans' lack of engagement during a November loss to the Chicago Bulls, with Griffin saying Staples was loud "in the wrong way" and Paul saying it "somewhat felt like a road game." Center DeAndre Jordan struck a similar note after a January home loss to the Miami Heat, sarcastically saying that "when we played on the road in Miami, it was tough." This might not necessarily be a regular occurrence, but it's not exactly a rarity, either.

And that, to some degree, is to be expected. For one thing, Los Angeles has always been a Lakers town and remains one, even with the purple-and-gold suffering through one of the worst down cycles in franchise history. Yes, the Clippers have been the superior Staples tenant for several years now, but generating and sustaining a strong fanbase is a long game, and Steve Ballmer's club has only recently begun the process of growing something new from the soil that Donald Sterling spent decades salting.

Mix in the fact that L.A.'s full of transplants from other towns, that the Warriors' faithful is both rabid and nearby enough distance to travel in bunches, and that there are few things in today's NBA more cheer-compelling than Chef Curry cooking — he'd finish with 27 points on 8-for-15 shooting and four assists in the win — and you've got a recipe for the sort of drown-out that'd be unthinkable in Oracle, the Moda Center up in Portland or some of the league's other toughest gyms.

This doesn't mean that there's no home-court advantage for the Clips, of course. They've gone 27-11 at home this year, rolled up a 117-36 mark in home games since Paul joined the club four seasons ago, and have benefited from the surge of the crowd in years past; Griffin and Paul both credited the Staples fans for providing a huge lift in L.A.'s Game 3 win over the Memphis Grizzlies back in 2012, for example. Whether it winds up being a problem come this postseason, though, remains to be seen.

The Clips, currently slotted in fifth place in the West, could find themselves with home-court advantage should they face the Portland Trail Blazers, who will get a higher seed should they win the Northwest Division, but aren't guaranteed a home start if their first-round opponent finishes up with a better record. (Portland enters Wednesday's action percentage points ahead of L.A., having played two fewer games with one fewer win and one fewer loss; as luck would have it, the Blazers and Clips square off on Wednesday night.)

Should current seeding hold, though, and the Clippers advance past Round 1, they'd be staring down a seven-game set with these same Warriors and their rowdy band of supporters. The Clips' game ops crew might want to start mic'ing up the owner just to tilt the sonic scales. I hear he's an excitable sort.

Hat-tip to Deadspin's Tom Ley on the video of Griffin's postgame comments.

News sport : Aaron Hernandez chain smoked marijuana, never failed NFL drug test

In the days and days and days of testimony at the Aaron Hernandez murder trial, there have been moments that presumably fit into the prosecution or defense somehow, but are interesting on their own.

Like the revelation on Wednesday that Hernandez "chain smoked" marijuana, sometimes up to an ounce a day. That is a lot of pot.

What makes that testimony interesting from an NFL standpoint is that Hernandez reportedly never failed an NFL drug test, according to a Boston Globe story from 2013.

It's not like the NFL doesn't test for marijuana, or catch players who have smoked. Ask Josh Gordon. So how did Hernandez never test positive? According to multiple reporters covering the trial, the claim that Hernandez smoked up to an ounce of marijuana a day was made by Alexander Bradley, a witness who sued Hernandez claiming that the former New England Patriots tight end shot him in the face in Florida in 2013. Hernandez is on trial for the murder of semipro football player Odin Lloyd in June of 2013.

Perhaps Bradley is exaggerating about Hernandez's use, but it should be a legitimate concern for the NFL that its drug testing failed to ever catch Hernandez.

Hernandez skirting the NFL's drug-testing methods is not a focus of the trial of course, but it's an interesting footnote that the league should probably take note of.

News sport : VOD: 6-year-old Owen Provencher's day as a Cal football player

6-year-old Owen Provencher got to spend a day with the Cal football team recently. If the team needs any help at wide receiver in 12 years or so, he's probably worth a scholarship offer. He's got some good hands.

Provencher has cystic fibrosis and got to hang out with some Cal football players recently. He also got to meet coach Sonny Dykes, the first person he meets in the video. He even got his hair cut at the Cal barbershop.

His father, Gary, is a Cal grad and the trip was set up through Cal's equipment director. Gary said Owen slept in his Cal jersey that night.

Cystic fibrosis is a disease that causes mucus buildup in the body. Here's a sample of Provencher's typical day from the Cal site:

In an effort to reduce the hospital visits that he has been able to avoid for the last 18 months, Owen has undergone therapy nearly every day of his existence. His days normally begin at 5:30 a.m., with the first of a series of daily treatments including but not limited to inhaled medications and a vest that he uses with a machine that basically beats his chest for about 20 minutes in an attempt to break up the thick mucus that forms in his lungs. When he gets home from school, it’s back to more therapy and treatments before he does anything else.

News sport : MAC will not hold events in Indiana because of religious-freedom law

The Mid-American Conference is boycotting Indiana because of its new religious-freedom law.

The commissioner of the MAC, John Steinbrecher, told ESPN that the conference will not hold meetings in the state until the law is changed or repealed.

"The Mid-American Conference will not schedule any more meetings or championships in Indiana until this current matter is brought to a sensible and appropriate conclusion," Steinbrecher told the site.

When the law was passed last week, the NCAA issued a strongly-worded statement that threatened the existence of NCAA events in the state if the law continued. The NCAA is based in Indianapolis.

The MAC holds its annual presidents' meetings in Indianapolis. The football conference championship game is held in Detroit. A petition has already been created to move the Big Ten title game out of Indianapolis.

Critics of the measure, which goes into effect on July 1 and is titled the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, feel that it opens the door for groups to be discriminated against on religious grounds. Tuesday, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence said he'd seek to clarify the law and said it wasn't his intent for the law to give people the ability to discriminate.

From the AP:

The Indiana law prohibits any laws that "substantially burden" a person's ability to follow his or her religious beliefs. The definition of "person" includes religious institutions, businesses and associations.

Although the legal language does not specifically mention gays and lesbians, critics say the law is designed to shield businesses and individuals who do not want to serve gays and lesbians, such as florists or caterers who might be hired for a same-sex wedding.

USC athletic director Pat Haden tweeted Tuesday that he wouldn't be attending College Football Playoff meetings in Indianapolis this week because of the law. Haden is a member of the CFP committee.

NASCAR issued a statement against the law on Tuesday as well and said it was disappointed in it. Other companies have written to Indiana urging the law's change.

Townsend motivated by Merson criticism

England substitute Andros Townsend declared that he had silenced his critics after his memorable goal earned Roy Hodgson's side a 1-1 draw in their friendly with Italy.

|||

England substitute Andros Townsend declared that he had silenced his critics after his memorable goal earned Roy Hodgson's side a 1-1 draw in their friendly with Italy in Turin.

The Tottenham Hotspur winger beat Gianluigi Buffon from 20 yards with a fine, right-footed strike in the 79th minute of Tuesday's game at Juventus Stadium, having replaced Fabian Delph nine minutes earlier.

Afterwards he took to Twitter to rebuke former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson for claiming he did not deserve his place in the squad, writing: “Not bad for a player that should be 'nowhere near the squad' ay @PaulMerse?”

Townsend, 23, said that Merson's criticism had given him extra motivation to perform well.

“As soon as the squad was announced two weeks ago, it has been going over in my head,” he told reporters.

“He said it when the squad was announced – that I should be nowhere near the squad. As soon as the goal went in, I was just desperate to get that tweet out!

“It didn't really annoy me. It had kind of just given me the extra incentive to silence a few critics and hopefully I have done that as I always have done.”

Although he is now a first-team regular at White Hart Lane, Townsend had started just two Premier League games for Tottenham this season before the turn of the year.

But England manager Hodgson has kept faith with him throughout, having seen him score a superb goal – also with his weaker right foot – against Montenegro on his international debut in October 2013.

“I have still got things to prove to people,” added Townsend, who cancelled out a 29th-minute header by Italy striker Graziano Pelle.

“You can never stop proving things to people, but I think every time I have put on an England shirt I have done myself justice, I have done Roy Hodgson justice and the nation justice.”

Hodgson claimed to be unmoved by newspaper criticism of Townsend, saying: “Lucky I don't read them, isn't it?”

Expanding on Townsend's qualities, Hodgson added: “It's because of the qualities that he brings. He's got that ability to get turned around very quickly and run at enormous pace, and that's something defenders don't like.

“In a squad of 20-odd players, there should be space for guys like him because he's a game-changer.”

Hodgson also praised Townsend's Spurs team-mate Harry Kane, who made his full debut but was unable to pull off a repeat of his debut goal from last Friday's 4-0 win over Lithuania in Euro 2016 qualifying.

“I think he did really well,” Hodgson said. “He's playing against three very experienced, strong, tough defenders. I'm more than satisfied with his performance.

“It's been a good 10 days for him. He's made his debut, scored a goal, made his full debut.” – AFP

United can’t miss out on CL - De Gea

Manchester United keeper David de Gea says it would be unthinkable for the club to finish outside of the Champions League places for two seasons in a row.

|||

Manchester United keeper David de Gea says it would be unthinkable for the club to finish outside of the Champions League places for two seasons in a row.

United return to domestic action at home to Aston Villa on Saturday with two wins against top-four rivals Tottenham and Liverpool having given Louis van Gaal’s side some breathing space behind Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal.

Now De Gea has underlined just how important it is for United to get back in to European football’s blue riband competition after a season in the wildnerness.

‘We have to qualify for the Champions League, no matter what,’ said De Gea, who last night conceded goals from Davy Klaassen and Stefan de Vrij as Spain lost 2-0 to Holland in Amsterdam. ‘We already missed out last season, and a team like Manchester United cannot do that two years in a row.’

The Spain international’s future remains in doubt as he only has one year left on his contract, but he recognises how the English game has enabled him to improve.

‘I’m a composed, calm type, which helps me in my profession,’ he said. ‘As a keeper, you need to convey a sense of calm to the rest of the team. But, truth be told, English football has changed me a great deal. I’ve developed a lot physically, I have greatly improved my concentration and have generally improved all aspects of my game.

‘I was very young when I came here, but four years on things are very good overall.’

Since January, De Gea has been working at Old Trafford with former Spain international Victor Valdes as his understudy.

‘He’s always ready to lend a hand, trying to help out with his advice, especially during games,’ De Gea said. – Daily Mail

Hummels denies deal with Van Gaal

Borussia Dortmund's Mats Hummels has shot down reports of a deal with Manchester United coach Louis Van Gaal to join the Premier League club.

|||

Berlin - Borussia Dortmund's Mats Hummels has shot down reports of a deal with Manchester United coach Louis Van Gaal to join the Premier League club, saying they were invented.

The Germany defender has long been a target for several top European clubs and he recently said he would like to play abroad at some point in his career. Hummels' current deal runs out in 2017.

German media have been full of reports in recent days of a possible move at the end of the season and an alleged promise he had made to the United coach that should he decide to move that he would join the English club.

But the central defender, who won the World Cup with Germany last year, said this was false.

“Just to be clear. This alleged “promise” is simply an invention... and that is saying it nicely,” he said on his official Twitter account on Wednesday.

Dortmund, German champions in 2011 and 2012, have been struggling this season after a bad first half and are in 10th place, chasing a European spot with eight games left in the campaign.

PSL’s coaching merry-go-round

The number of coaching changes in the Premiership has reached a staggering 17 since the beginning of the season.

Johanneburg – When the Absa Premiership resumes on Saturday after a two-and-a-half week break, a fresh batch of

newly-appointed coaches will be eager to make their mark.

Platinum Stars, Moroka Swallows and Chippa United all parted ways with their mentors in the last week to bring the number of coaching changes in the Premiership to a staggering 17 since the beginning of the season.

The Birds’ appointed Craig Rosslee at the helm, replacing Fani Madida who quit earlier in the season while Goodman Mazibuko took charge for one match in the interim. The relegation-threatened Swallows languish in second last place on the log, but Rosslee will still have time to find a winning formula with his side’s next league encounter scheduled for April 15.

Stars announced on Tuesday they had acquired the services of Cavin Johnson ahead of their match at home to Ajax Cape Town at Royal Bafokeng Stadium.

The Rustenburg side parted ways with Allan Freese after his charges went down 2-1 at home to Maritzburg United in their previous match.

Johnson re-joins the side he led almost two years ago, when he helped the team to their highest ever league finish with second on the log in the 2012/2013 season.

Stars sit just two points above the relegation zone in 13th place on the table with eight games remaining, and cashing-in on their home ground advantage against the fifth-placed Cape side could prove difficult.

On Monday, news filtered in that Chippa United had suspended coach Ernst Middendorp pending an investigation, to leave the 12th-placed team on the Premiership log precariously poised with six games remaining in their season.

Mich D’Avray, Chippa’s technical director will take charge until the club finds a permanent replacement as coach. D’Avray will be assisted by Fadlu Davids.

Middendorp was winless in seven games since taking control of the side from Roger Sikhakhane in January, and seemingly could not survive the chop.

Chippa, known for changing their coaches with regularity, had witnessed Costa Papic’s resignation in September, in keeping with that theme.

Remarkably only five teams can boast the same coach with which they began the season, as Stuart Baxter (Kaizer Chiefs), Steve Komphela (Maritzburg United), Gavin Hunt (Bidvest Wits), Roger de Sa (Ajax Cape Town) and Pitso Mosimane (Mamelodi Sundowns) have kept their jobs.

While the weekend will not see the league’s top three teams in action, the mid-table clash between Wits (fourth) and Polokwane City (seventh) at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium should provide ample insight as to how the break affected the teams. With a win, Wits could draw level on 43 points with Pirates in third place, but still behind on goal difference.

Fixtures, Saturday: AmaZulu v Free State Stars (Moses

Mabhida Stadium), Maritzburg United v SuperSport United (Harry Gwala Stadium),

Platinum Stars v Ajax Cape Town (Royal Bafokeng Stadium), Polokwane City v

Bidvest Wits (Old Peter Mokaba Stadium).

Sunday: Bloemfontein Celtic v University of Pretoria (Kaizer

Sebothelo Stadium). – ANA

Wilshere boost for Arsenal

Arsene Wenger has been handed a huge boost for their top-four clash against Liverpool.

Arsene Wenger has been handed a huge boost for their top-four clash against Liverpool.

As Sportsmail revealed last week, Jack Wilshere, Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Debuchy are all likely to be available after injury and along with Abou Diaby — who made his latest return to action — played in the Under 21s’ 4-0 win over Brentford yesterday.

Wilshere, who scored the opener, played 45 minutes as he stepped up his return from an ankle injury that has prevented him from playing since November.

Right back Debuchy, who hasn’t played since January after dislocating a shoulder, completed 60 minutes. Arteta, who has been out since November with calf and ankle problems, played the first 45 minutes.

Diaby, who has endured another injury-plagued season, also played 45 minutes.

The quartet could now be available for the visit of Brendan Rodgers’ side this weekend.

Danny Welbeck, though, remains a doubt after picking up a knee injury during England’s win over Lithuania on Friday night.

Meanwhile, Arsenal are awaiting clarification on Petr Cech’s future before moving for the Chelsea goalkeeper.

The Czech Republic international is set to leave Stamford Bridge this summer, with the club now prepared to part with the keeper — but only for £10million or above.

Given Arsenal and Chelsea’s rivalry, a move to the Emirates Stadium for Cech would be hard to broker.

But the Gunners want to ensure they have a realistic chance of landing Cech before launching a move, with Chelsea likely to be reluctant to sell to a direct rival. – Daily Mail
