News sport : Thought of picking starting QB beginning to hit Urban Meyer

You likely know that Ohio State coach Urban Meyer has a dilemma when it comes to picking a starting quarterback for 2015. It's a good one, mind you, but Meyer said Tuesday that he's beginning to be impacted by the decision.

"It's not like receiver, where you can put three of them out there," Meyer said via Cleveland.com. "That's the one thing that's weighing a little bit. It didn't for a while because you're just so busy. But now I'm seeing what I'm seeing, and I have such great respect for all three guys."

Meyer has Braxton Miller, who set records as Ohio State's starter in 2013. He was sidelined for the Buckeyes' national championship-winning season with a shoulder injury. J.T. Barrett replaced him as the starting QB for 2014 and promptly broke Miller's records. He was hurt in the final game of he regular season against Michigan and Cardale Jones replaced him, winning games against Wisconsin, Alabama and Oregon to cap a 13-1 season.

It's a situation that may not have an incorrect answer, and no, there have been no hints as to who the starter come September could be.

Both Miller and Barrett are still rehabbing their injuries. Meyer said Barrett was a bit ahead of where he thought he'd be at this point in spring after suffering the ankle injury in November. Miller, who reinjured his throwing shoulder that was surgically repaired after the 2013 season, has had to throttle back his rehab just a bit. Trainers don't want Miller falling on the shoulder and risking further damage.

News sport : Pete Carroll photobombs John Clayton, seeking the elusive ponytail

When last we saw Pete Carroll, he was slinking off the field after Super Bowl XLIX, having made perhaps the most boneheaded decision in football history. Well, it's seven weeks later, and guess who's back, photobombing ESPN's John Clayton during a Sportscenter hit:

Was he lost or deliberately skulking? With Carroll, you're never quite sure, but afterward, he noted his motive:

The reference, of course, is to whether or not Clayton actually has a hidden ponytail, an urban legend best given life by a classic Sportscenter commercial:

The offseason is just the best, ain't it?

News sport : Adam Scott considering long putter for the Masters

After a solid first week with the short putter and a more traditional putting stroke, Adam Scott has struggled.

In his last six PGA Tour rounds between the Valspar Championship -- where Scott missed his first cut, ending a streak of 45 made cuts -- and the Arnold Palmer Invitational, Scott has lost 9.3 shots to the field with the flatstick. That's not good. That's on the heels of gaining 3.1 strokes on the field at the WGC-Cadillac Championship at Doral, where he first put the traditional-length putter into play.

The bad results from Innisbrook and Bay Hill have Scott considering a change back to the broomstick and anchored stroke one last time at Augusta National in two weeks.

"Putting with a longer putter is maybe the smarter thing to do," Scott said Sunday at Bay Hill, where he finished T-35 after having a win in his hands a year ago. "I don't know. It's all about the lag putting. It's such a difference in weight of club and stroke and everything. I'm just trying to figure it all out."

The anchored putting stroke will become illegal on Jan. 1, 2016, so Scott will have to make a permanent transition soon enough. However, Scott intends to make the most of one last crack at the Masters with the long putter.

"It's not exactly where I want to be, but it doesn't matter when it comes to the Masters," said the 2013 Masters champ. "I've got two weeks and a really clear idea of what to work on."

News sport : NFL going all-gold for Super Bowl 50

Super Bowl 50. This season will mark the run-up to the 50th Super Bowl, and since 50 is a golden anniversary, the NFL is going all-gold, all season long. Trust us, over the next 10 months you're gonna see more gold than that dragon in The Hobbit.

Start with the name. For the first time, the NFL is abandoning the Roman numerals. That's not exactly a surprise: the Roman numeral for 50 is "L," and "SUPER BOWLL" makes even less sense than "Super Bowl XXX" a couple decades back.

From there, the NFL is going absolutely all-in on the gold, starting with the upcoming NFL Draft. Players who cross the stage will get a team hat with a gold NFL shield on the back. Logos for Kickoff Weekend and the playoffs will be gold as well.

Out on the field, every 50 yard line will be tinted gold, and starting in Week 7, every team's logo will be rimmed with gold as well. Pro Bowl uniforms will be black, white, and gold. And the winner of Super Bowl 50 will get a gargantuan "50" in addition to the Lombardi trophy; the numerals will weigh 33 pounds apiece.

Let's be honest, though: that's all just decoration. The cool aspect is the 19 Super Bowl rematches scheduled throughout the year, starting in August with Minnesota vs. Pittsburgh in a Super Bowl IX rematch. The NFL will also recognize all the high schools around the country that have produced the estimated 3,000-plus players and coaches who have appeared in Super Bowls by sending them golden, inscribed footballs.

You get the idea. By the end of the 2015-16 season, we will all be Bania:

News sport : Yankees recreate famous Babe Ruth scene from 'The Sandlot'

Here at The Stew, we love us some baseball movies, and perhaps none more than "The Sandlot." That hardly makes us unique, though. Everybody loves "The Sandlot," including, apparently, the New York Yankees.

What you'll find above is a wonderful little skit where current Yanks players recreate the famous Babe Ruth scene from the movie. It stars Brett Gardner as Smalls, learning that he just offered up a ball autographed by Ruth to Hercules, the feared ball-chomping dog that lives beyond the sandlot's fence.

Dellin Betances, Jacoby Ellsbury, C.C. Sabathia and Didi Gregorius play members of "The Sandlot" crew, but perhaps most notable is Brian McCann, who's in the Ham Porter role and actually seems like he could be a slimmed-down, grown-up Ham.

If you don't know the original scene (shame on you!) or just want to see it again, here you go:

If you missed it the first-time around, The Stew did an extensive retrospective on "The Sandlot" for its 20th anniversary in 2013, including interviews with a couple of the film's stars and writer/director/narrator David M. Evans.

News sport : Kings and Williams not listed on Michigan St.'s spring roster

Michigan State is missing two key contributors on its spring roster.

The Spartans began spring practice on Tuesday and both wide receiver Macgarrett Kings and running back Delton Williams were not listed. Each player was involved in legal issues over the offseason.

"Anybody not on the depth chart is sort of in limbo," Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio said Tuesday via SpartanMag.com. "That's the best way to say it right now. We're day-to-day on a lot of guys."

Dantonio failed to go any further about either player on a follow-up question.

Kings was arrested and charged with two misdemeanors after he was arrested on Feb. 28 for an alcohol-related incident that allegedly involved kicking an East Lansing parking vehicle. He was arrested in 2014 for DUI and OWI and missed the rest of spring practice after that arrest. He was sentenced to 13 months probation in a plea deal and had 29 catches in 2014.

Michigan State WR coach Terrance Samuel spoke about Kings Monday afternoon on Lansing's 92.1 FM. From MLive.com:

"Macgarrett is dealing with some personal things that he's got to take care of,'' Samuel said. "The thing we have to do as a family here is to make sure that we walk him through all that stuff and give him the support that he needs.

"So we're going to support him and try to get him through it. That's what my job is, never second-guess the kid and what he's going through.''

Williams, a possible starter at RB for the Spartans in 2015, was arrested last week and charged with brandishing a firearm, also a misdemeanor. He was reportedly involved in a road rage incident on campus. In 2014, he was Michigan State's No. 3 rusher with 326 yards.

News sport : Alabama lawmaker proposes bill to bring back UAB football

Alabama State Rep. Jack Williams, who on Monday called for the removal of UAB president Ray Watts, is currently working to get the Blazers football team reinstated.

Williams, proposed legislation late last week to require the University of Alabama System to have a football program at UAB as long as there is one on the main campus in Tuscaloosa.

More than 35 House members have signed on as co-sponsors of the bill.

Watts announced in December that UAB was ending its football, women’s bowling and women’s rifle programs due to a lack of funding. Since that announcement, there have been numerous protests in an attempt to bring the sports back.

Watts also has come under fire after AL.com released several documents that revealed Watts had already decided to disband the sports in September, despite claiming he didn't know their fates until November. One memo suggested UAB should wait until after the football season to announce the cuts to limit the in-season backlash.

Williams called for Watts' job after the documents were released.

“Ladies and gentlemen, this is deception and treachery at its worst. Action must be taken,” Williams said.

Williams also filed legislation to restructure the Alabama Board of Trustees to give greater representation to the communities where the other three Alabama System campuses are located.

News sport : The 10-man rotation, starring how Tony Allen locks dudes up

A look around the league and the Web that covers it. It's also important to note that the rotation order and starting nods aren't always listed in order of importance. That's for you, dear reader, to figure out.

[DraftKings: FREE entry to huge cash Fantasy Basketball Contest with first deposit]

C: Complex. Tony Allen wants to win Defensive Player of the Year, but the Memphis Grizzlies' perimeter stopper has made his peace with missing out on accolades: “You don’t see no Gatorade commercials for defensive players, but I’d rather have respect than the fame anyway."

PF: ClipperBlog. A good look at the myriad stretch-run and playoff scenarios facing the Los Angeles Clippers, who enter Tuesday's action just 1 1/2 games out of the No. 3 seed in the West, but also only two games clear of the No. 7 seed.

SF: InPredictable. Interesting stuff from Mike Beuoy, using play-by-play data to split each team's pace numbers into offensive and defensive halves, looking more closely at how fast teams put up shots on offense and how much they slow down opponents when defending.

SG: The Brooklyn Game. Devin Kharpertian offers a great breakdown, complete with post-game quotes, video and context, of the "stack" pick-and-roll action with which the Boston Celtics put away the Brooklyn Nets on Monday night to secure a big victory in the race for an Eastern Conference playoff spot.

PG: Hang Time. John Schuhmann considers the crowded MVP race by looking at how frequently the top candidates get touches and how their teams' offenses perform when they touch the ball compared to when they don't. One major takeaway: Anthony Davis needs to get the ball a hell of a lot more often.

6th: The Triangle. Zach Lowe revisits the Phoenix Suns' trade-deadline shuffle — out go Goran Dragic, Isaiah Thomas, Miles Plumlee, Tyler Ennis and the coveted, protected 2015 first-round draft pick of the Los Angeles Lakers; in come Brandon Knight, Marcus Thornton and three future first-rounders — and tries to evaluate the likelihood that Suns general manager Ryan McDonough's gamble will pay off.

7th: Bleacher Report. Fred Katz on how moving off of Michael Carter-Williams and onto Isaiah Canaan fits into the Philadelphia 76ers' attempt to build an identity, and how, even if Canaan isn't necessarily Philly's point guard of the future, he represents an attempt at developing "stylistic continuity" in a still-under-construction offense.

8th: The Hook. On the polar opposite end of the spectrum, Tom Ziller considers the anything-but-textbook rebuilding strategy that has, somehow, led the Golden State Warriors to the top of the NBA: "Over the past five years, the Warriors have overpaid fringe stars, drafted exceptionally well while never picking higher than No. 6, taken huge gambles in trades, free agency and on the sidelines and have generally been impatient with the status quo. And that's gotten them to 57 wins and counting."

9th: The Starters. Trey Kerby has a pretty reasonable argument for why, persistent weirdness aside, the Cleveland Cavaliers still wound up winning last summer's blockbuster trade: "If trading Andrew Wiggins and Anthony Bennett for a single, stressful year of unhappy Kevin Love means you get LeBron James, you do it."

10th: ESPN Boston. Jared Sullinger talks with Jackie MacMullan about his struggles to stay in shape, which have become something of a sticking point in the talented but injury-prone big man's relationship with the Celtics.

News sport : Blake Griffin cleared of battery charge in Las Vegas nightclub incident

Mar 22, 2015; Los Angeles, CA, USA; Los Angeles Clippers forward Blake Griffin (32) shoots against New Orleans Pelicans forward Anthony Davis (23) during the first half at Staples Center. (Robert Hanashiro-USA TODAY Sports) Nevada prosecutors on Tuesday dropped a misdemeanor battery charge filed in November against Los Angeles Clippers power forward Blake Griffin in connection with an alleged confrontation at a Las Vegas nightclub.

[DraftKings: FREE entry to huge cash Fantasy Basketball Contest with first deposit]

Daniel Schuhman, 39, told police that Griffin, 26, had slapped him and grabbed his cell phone during a contentious interaction reportedly related to the unwelcome use of a camera at TAO Nightclub in Las Vegas on Oct. 19, 2014. Those claims evidently couldn't be substantiated to the point of bringing a case against the five-time All-Star, according to The Associated Press:

Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson said Tuesday that new information obtained since a battery charge was filed in November made it clear that the allegations couldn't be proved.

The 26-year-old Griffin didn't appear in court. [...]

A telephone call to the alleged victim, Daniel Schuman of West Hollywood, California, rang unanswered.

While Griffin himself has offered scant comment on the matter over the past several months, his representative said he was pleased with the outcome, according to Austin Knoblauch of the Los Angeles Times:

Griffin’s attorney, Richard Schonfeld, said the case against his client was dismissed after his office provided transcripts of witness interviews.

“The State reviewed that evidence in conjunction with the rest of the materials in the case and determined that they could not proceed with the case,” Schonfeld said via email. “We are pleased with the dismissal and believe that it is the appropriate result.”

With this distraction behind him, Griffin — who returned to the L.A. lineup a week and a half ago after missing 15 games following surgery to address a staph infection in his right elbow — can focus solely on returning to form and helping the Clippers make a late-season playoff push.

Griffin has averaged 18.8 points, 8.6 rebounds, 5.2 assists and just under 2.5 combined steals and blocks in 37.2 minutes per game in five contests since coming back, with the Clippers going 4-1 with him back in the mix. Doc RIvers' club enters Tuesday's action at 46-25, slotting them in fifth in the Western Conference, just 1 1/2 games south of the No. 3-seeded Houston Rockets.

Muted response to Blatter’s unity call

Fifa president Sepp Blatter received muted applause from Uefa delegates at the opening of their congress.

|||

Vienna - Fifa president Sepp Blatter received muted applause from Uefa delegates after he gave a low-key speech at the opening of their congress which included a less-than-subtle call for unity ahead of May's Fifa presidential elections.

Most European delegates, including president Michel Platini, are against Blatter winning a fifth term of office as the head of world soccer's governing body, openly backing the men standing against him.

The 79-year-old Swiss declined an invitation from Uefa to address delegates as a presidential candidate along with his challengers, Jordanian Prince Ali bin Al Hussein, Dutchman Michael van Praag and Luis Figo of Portugal who were present in the auditorium when he spoke.

Instead Blatter addressed delegates in his role as Fifa president, calling on them to show unity and solidarity, which he claimed were the foundation stones of soccer's popularity around the world.

He also referred to a recent call from the president of Ukraine for countries to boycott the World Cup in Russia in 2018 because of the ongoing conflict between the two nations, saying boycotts never achieved anything and sport should lead by example and retain its autonomy in a world of conflict.

“Football is a symbol of unity. I am convinced that more than ever the hope of mankind rests not only on the slogans of Fifa but also on peace and solidarity,” he said.

“Maybe we cannot change the world but at least we can help change the world and help in certain conflict situations.

“I appeal to Uefa, but not only to Uefa but all the confederations, to help bring this unity and solidarity together to help build our respective organisations.”

“Speaking of Russia, football has to stay united.

“In the past Boycotts have never brought any results.

“We have to pay attention to our statutes, and the Olympic charter, and even in the resolutions of the United Nations, it is written: the autonomy of sport must be guaranteed.

“Uefa has the best football and the best footballers, they are the example. We ask Europe to be the promoter of the popularity of our game. Football can only be strong if the governing bodies are strong and united. It is solidarity and unity.

“That is the message today and for tomorrow, and the message for the future, for the world and for Uefa.” – Reuters

Costa ruled out of Spanish squad

Spain forward Diego Costa will miss the holders' Euro 2016 qualifier at home to Ukraine and a friendly away to Netherlands four days later.

|||

Madrid - Spain forward Diego Costa will miss the holders' Euro 2016 qualifier at home to Ukraine on Friday and a friendly away to Netherlands four days later due to a hamstring injury sustained playing for Chelsea at the weekend.

Spanish soccer federation (RFEF) medical staff confirmed the injury in tests in Madrid and Costa has withdrawn from the squad, the RFEF said on Spain's official website (www.sefutbol.com) on Tuesday.

“Diego Costa will return to Chelsea where he will undergo the corresponding medical treatment,” the federation added.

Spain coach Vicente del Bosque has already drafted Juanmi in as cover, the 21-year-old Malaga forward winning his first call-up after representing Spain at junior level.

With four matches played, Spain are second in Group C on nine points, three behind leaders Slovakia, who beat them 2-1 in Zilina in October, and level with Ukraine.

The friendly against Netherlands in Amsterdam on March 31 is a repeat of the 2010 World Cup final and the first time the teams clash since Netherlands crushed Spain 5-1 in the group stage of the 2014 World Cup. – Reuters

News sport : Former Nebraska DL coach arrested after domestic dispute

News sport : Power Rankings: Kurt Busch is climbing

Our Power Rankings are far from a scientific formula. In fact, it's the perfect blend of analytics and bias against your favorite driver. And you think we dislike your favorite driver, so it makes sense, right? Direct all your complaints to us at happyhourmailbag@yahoo.com.

1. Kevin Harvick (LW: 1): Another race, another top two for Kevin Harvick. Ho-hum. Let's move on. He's so boring. OK, we won't just yet. Dude's setting a torrid pace and you do have to wonder if there's been some whispering wishes that this run was coming in the last five races of 2015 rather than the first five. For as great as the run Harvick is on has been, it's going to become a footnote if he doesn't win the Chase. It's not fair, but there's not much of the 2014 season pre-Chase that's replayed, is there?

2. Joey Logano (LW: 2): If the race had gone green the rest of the way, was Logano in the best position of anyone? After a speeding penalty on what could have been the final round of yellow-flag pit stops, Logano stopped again for fuel. He could have made it to the end without stopping while other drivers were forced to pit. We know that didn't work out, but the cautions did mean Logano could, like his teammate, take four tires late in the race without much fear of falling back and the fresh rubber helped net him a seventh-place finish.

3. Kurt Busch (LW: 12): Yes, it's a nine-place jump for Busch, but this isn't a statement. Look at how fast he's been over his two races. And, frankly, it was his race to win on Sunday before the wackiness of the final laps. Well, OK, it was his race to win after the first caution flag for debris that was never shown on television. Look, we're not supporting conspiracy theories. But when you have a segment of the fanbase that's already shown it doesn't consider the sport trustworthy and last 25 laps unfold the way they did, it's a recipe for minds to run wild.

4. Martin Truex Jr. (LW: 3): Dropping Truex a spot after finishing eighth while leaving Logano in second after finishing seventh may not be the fairest thing in the world. But eh, we're in charge here. Truex got under Tony Stewart's skin after contact on the backstretch. Truex said he felt Stewart ran into him while Stewart said Truex cut in front of him. Maybe the truth is somewhere in the middle? Either way, the nine-years-older Stewart referred to Truex as a kid.

5. Brad Keselowski (LW: 9): Keselowski's acceptance of the circumstances of the win after the race was appropriate. While his drive to the front shouldn't be discounted -- one wrong lane choice on a restart and he's probably not in victory lane -- it's also a win that has not going to happen until the cautions fell the way they did. But hey, both Penske cars are probably going to be in the Chase and now it's all about bonus points.

6. Ryan Newman (LW: 6): Newman is putting together top fives like last year didn't happen. Last year, he had five top fives in 36 races. This year, he already has three. At this pace, he'll have his sixth top five after Talladega. Though given Ryan Newman's history at Talladega, we aren't so sure that banking on a top five is the best idea. If you want to continue this pace, Newman, have six top fives after Richmond, OK?

7. Dale Earnhardt Jr. (LW: 7): Junior finished sixth at California, but he did a Twitter Q&A on the flight back from the west coast so that's totally more important. Now he's heading to the track where he got his last (points) win. How many times will his pass of Tony Stewart from the fall be replayed this weekend? No matter what the number is, it'll be higher than the number of Martinsville hot dogs we eat this weekend.

8. Jimmie Johnson (LW: 4): Yeah, this isn't fair to Jimmie Johnson either. But if you're looking at the drivers above him, who would you slot below Johnson? You can make an argument for his Hendrick teammate after his Phoenix finish, but that's about it. Johnson was fast, but not fast enough at California. And our guess is that he's got a great chance of being fast enough for a win at Martinsville.

9. Matt Kenseth (LW: 11): Your eyes aren't deceiving you. Flatline is getting a two-spot bump despite a poor finish. We're not the points standings, so we can reward good runs and "what if?" wins if we'd like. And we're awarding a "what-if?" win to Kenseth. Or at least a top five. There's no telling how a fuel-mileage race would have played out, but Kenseth had a great shot being the leader. And honestly? We would have preferred a fuel-mileage finish to the tailor-made-for-short-attention-spans thing that ended up being reality.

10. Paul Menard (LW: NR): Sunday was Menard's first top-five and top-10 finish of the season. But guess what? He's ninth in the points standings and has finished on the lead lap of every race this season. With an average finish of 13.6 so far, is he the 2015 version of Ryan Newman? Now, we're not saying that Menard is going to finish second in the points standings, but if the consistency continues, he's going to make the Chase.

11. Kasey Kahne (LW: 5): Kahne finished 17th after it looked like he got a bit of damage via contact on the backstretch. Kahne was in the midst of the melee that led to the debris caution from Kyle Larson's bumper flying off. He might have gotten a piece of Greg Biffle. 17th is also his lowest finish of the season. He's done it twice now coupling this with his kerfuffle with Carl Edwards.

12. Denny Hamlin (LW: 10): Hamlin was fast. Until he wasn't. He led 56 laps but his race went south after he hit the wall and had a pit road penalty. Instead of finishing up with Busch and Harvick, he hwas down with Brian Scott and Trevor Bayne. Quite the difference in company, don't you think? With Kenseth's troubles, Carl Edwards was the highest-finishing Joe Gibbs Racing car in 13th and David Ragan was 18th.

Lucky Dog: Two straight top-10 finishes for Jeff Gordon.

The DNF: Sam Hornish is 30th in the standings after his fourth non-lead lap finish of the year.

Dropped out: Jamie McMurray

News sport : Darion Atkins apologizes for criticizing Virginia teammates

As expected, Darion Atkins had some second thoughts about telling the media that he "wanted it more" than some teammates during Virginia's loss to Michigan State on Sunday.

[DraftKings: Play Fantasy College Basketball – Draft your team today!]

The senior forward apologized in a statement on Monday for questioning the desire of his teammates and for describing the second-seeded squad as "p------" after the upsetting 60-54 loss to the seventh-seeded Spartans. It was the second straight year Virginia had been eliminated from the tourney by Michigan State and the last college basketball game for Atkins.

Here's Atkins' apology from the Virginia men's basketball Twitter account:

"I would like to apologize for my inappropriate comments to the media in Charlotte. I let my emotions get the best of me during the NCAA tournament and I did not intend to offend anyone. In hindsight I wish I had used more appropriate words to express myself. I've met with my teammates and coaches to express my remorse for this unfortunate situation. I want everyone to know that I care so much about this program and I hope this does not become a distraction from all that we were able to accomplish this year."

Part of the reason we love the NCAA tournament so much is that the emotions of the participants are on such clear display. It's all real, whether it's a Villanova band member crying because it's the last game she'll ever play at or a senior forward so devastated that he says something he shouldn't.

Not that we condone Atkins' original remarks, but we can definitely understand why they happened. Credit to him for realizing the mistake he made in the heat of the moment and for apologizing for it later.

News sport : Roy Williams doubtful Kennedy Meeks plays against Wisconsin

Roy Williams doesn't sound optimistic his best low-post scorer will be available Thursday night.

The North Carolina coach said on his weekly radio show on Monday night that the Tar Heels are preparing as though they won't have Kennedy Meeks when they face top-seeded Wisconsin in the West Regional semifinals.

[DraftKings: Free $25,000 March Madness Fantasy Basketball Contest]

Meeks suffered what North Carolina has called a sprained left knee Saturday night when Arkansas defender Anthlon Bell took a charge and fell into the big man's left knee. Meeks did not practice with the Tar Heels on Monday, but the 6-foot-9 sophomore is expected to travel with the team to Los Angeles.

"It's not good," Williams said on his radio show. "They're not completely ruling him out, and they're not saying that he can play. Let me say it that way — I don't think we'll have him, but we'll just have to wait and see."

By far North Carolina's most efficient back-to-the-basket scorer, Meeks shoots 56.6 percent from the field and averages 11.6 points per game. He is also North Carolina's leading shot blocker and second-leading rebounder this season.

If Meeks can't play, reserve big man Joel James would be the most likely option to start in his place alongside Brice Johnson in the frontcourt. North Carolina also could go small and insert guard Nate Britt into the lineup instead of James, but that could leave the Tar Heels more vulnerable defensively against a Wisconsin frontline that includes national player of the year candidate Frank Kaminsky and forwards Sam Dekker and Nigel Hayes.
