Shakes Mashaba was at pains to quell lingering suspicions that he was coerced into calling up a number of overseas-based players who he had previously overlooked.

Announcing the 30-man squad for next week’s international friendlies against Swaziland and Nigeria, the Bafana Bafana coach insisted that it was the technical team’s decision that the likes of Thulani Serero, May Mahlangu, Ayanda Patosi and Kamohelo Mokotjo be included.

“Maybe people think someone may have changed our minds (about the players) – that is not so,” Mashaba said at Safa House yesterday. “There’s no way people can say to us that this must be done by force. We are an organisation. We’re not like a ship that has no rudder. We sit down and discuss.”

The four players had previously been declared surplus to requirements by the coach, with Serero omitted from the squad that went to the Africa Cup of Nations at the beginning of the year, after failing to report to a training camp.

Mahlangu was “banned indefinitely” by Safa, after pulling out of the Afcon qualifiers against Sudan and Nigeria, while Patosi was left out after missing his flight for a qualifier against Sudan. Mokotjo was dismissed by the coach as “heavy and sluggish”.

A fortnight ago, Safa president Danny Jordaan made the announcement that all South African players would have to be considered for selection and made an undertaking, seen by many as a veiled instruction to the technical team, that those players out of favour must be engaged with the view of having them eligible for selection.

Yesterday’s inclusion of the four seemed to validate the suspicion the coach was instructed to include them but Mashaba denied this. He did, however, say they had spoken to the players and was hopeful they would honour the call-up.

We made an effort to engage the players and, if they don’t respond, we leave it to you the public to decide … I am not one to have a tiff with players. I don’t have time to be angry with them.”

Also back in the squad is Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune, off since his injury at the end of last year.

Khune was also left behind for the Afcon, despite his club claiming he was fit, and after Bafana’s poor showing there were cries the shot-stopper should have been taken along.

He takes Darren Keet’s position with both his teammate Brilliant Khuzwayo and Jackson Mabokgwane retained.

Mashaba called up Black Leopards striker Siphelele Ntshangase who “is banging them in” in the National First Division. Tuks’s Thabo Mnyamane’s good work was also rewarded with inclusion into the country’s senior national squad. Polokwane City’s Cole Alexander and Daniel Cardoso of Free State Stars are the other new faces.

Mashaba is hoping the two matches will help the squad’s build-up for the 2017 Afcon qualifiers, which loom large.

“We will be starting with the next Afcon qualifiers. So we would like to see as many players as we can and give them the opportunity to show off their skills so that, when they start, we know what we have.”

Bafana will play Swaziland at Somhlolo Stadium in Mbabane on March 25 and host Nigeria at Mbombela Stadium in Mpumalanga on March 29.

“We’re very happy Swaziland agreed to play us; they are part of our region and we must take them seriously… If we believe we are the best, we need to impart what we have and share with our neighbours.”

Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli hit out at his detractors in an angry video published on his Instagram account late, telling them: “Shut up!”

Speaking directly to camera in the short clip, he says: “Do you know me? Did you ever talk to me, personally? Do you know what I've been through in my life? You just saw me play football on the pitch, so man, shut up!”

An accompanying caption read: “For those with an easy judge (sic) without knowing s*** about others. Good night #idowhatiwant-remember!”

The 24-year-old Italy international may have been responding to criticism of his performances since arriving at Anfield from AC Milan in a £16 million ($23.5 million, 22.1 million euros) deal last August.

Signed partly to offset the departure of Luis Suarez to Barcelona, Balotelli has scored only four goals in 20 appearances in all competitions and has found the net only once in the Premier League. – AFP

Mignolet epitomy of Liverpool revival

Simon Mignolet summed it up for Liverpool. The goalkeeper, widely derided earlier this season, has been part of a major turnaround in the fortunes of the club.

|||

Simon Mignolet summed it up for Liverpool. The goalkeeper, widely derided earlier this season, has been part of a major turnaround in the fortunes of the club, sparked by losing to Manchester United in December.

After Liverpool’s 1-0 win at Swansea on Monday, Mignolet hailed the fighting spirit of the side and welcomed the prospect of facing United in the Barclays Premier League at Anfield on Sunday.

‘We know there will be a huge build-up,’ he said. ‘But as professional football players we can’t get carried away. We have a good squad who are willing to fight for each other. We work hard and sometimes it is even more satisfying to get the three points in that way.’

Liverpool are unbeaten in 2015 and are aiming for second place in the table after their upturn in form since December. In fact, they have already won as many league games this year (eight) as they did in the first half of the season, despite having played nine games fewer.

They have also picked up more Premier League points since Boxing Day (32) than Merseyside rivals Everton have all season (31) and Monday’s win came courtesy of their sixth successive away clean sheet in the league.

Their amazing form has seen them cut the gap to second-placed Manchester City from 17 points to four. Brendan Rodgers’ side remain the only unbeaten team in the top four English tiers in 2015. And in their past six matches they have picked up an average of 2.67 points per game, despite facing three of the current top seven teams.– Daily Mail

News sport : Troy Tulowitzki and Nolan Arenado combine for rare 6-5-3 putout

Even for a players as good as Troy Tulowitzki and Nolan Arenado, they still need spring training to work out the kinks.

The left side of the Rockies' infield was slightly out of sync during Colorado's Cactus League game against the Angels on Tuesday, though Arenado managed to show off his great defensive ability on a play where the duo weren't on the same page.

With Kole Calhoun standing at second base, Albert Pujols bounced a ball to short that was fielded by Tulowitzki.

[Yahoo Sports Fantasy Baseball: Sign up and join a league today!]

Tulowitzki thought he had a chance to nail Calhoun at third. He fired the ball Arenado's way, but the Rockies' third baseman hadn't reached the base yet and wasn't in a position to make a tag.

Arenado knew as soon as he received the ball that he couldn't reach the runner, so he threw it to first baseman Justin Morneau in time to retire Pujols, completing a play that goes down as the oft-used 6-5-3 groundout in your scorebook.

"That’s a first for me," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said after the game . "But nothing surprises me that Nolan does. Pretty good awareness right there, to get that ball away as quickly as he did."

[Baseball is back! Check out Yahoo For Spring Training for great spring training pics.]

Maybe the next time the same scenario comes up, Tulowitzki and Arenado will have figured out the timing to get the runners at third and at first. Now that's a play we'd love to see.

Monaco got lucky - Wenger

Monaco were fortunate to reach the Champions League quarter-finals on away goals, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said after his team's 2-0 win at Louis II failed to overturn their first-leg defeat.

|||

Monaco - Monaco were fortunate to reach the Champions League quarter-finals on away goals, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said after his team's 2-0 win at Louis II failed to overturn their first-leg defeat.

Monaco won 3-1 in London three weeks ago but were overwhelmed by a dominant Arsenal side in the return game, although Wenger was left to rue missed chances.

“We knew that it would be tough to score three goals but we did not seize our opportunities,” Wenger told BeIN Sport.

“It's not a question of merit, it's a question of being efficient. We also made psychological errors in the first leg. Monaco were fortunate, we must congratulate them.”

Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker, however, was critical of his side.

“The best team went through. Monaco deserved it because they played much better in the first leg. We played well today but it was a massive deficit and it wasn't enough tonight,” the German said.

“We came here and tried absolutely everything and when you look at the game we could have scored more than two. Monaco deserve it and that's absolutely fine.

“They caused a lot of problems away from home. We have to admit that we regret the first game.

“But if we continue to play like that we'll do well in the FA Cup and the (Premier) league. But play as badly as we did in the first game and you're out of the Champions League.”

“We tried to push until the end but Monaco held firm and they did not steal their qualification. Hats off to them,” Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud said.

Arsenal went ahead in the 36th minute when Giroud fired into the roof of the net and second-half substitute Aaron Ramsey doubled the tally 11 minutes from time with a low shot.

“In the past we've played Bayern, Barcelona - no disrespect to Monaco but we thought we had a good opportunity to qualify,” Ramsey said. – Reuters

News sport : Ole Miss rallies from 17 down in second half to end BYU's season

All season long college basketball fans and analysts have complained about the lack of scoring, flow and excitement in the game and the need for rules changes to enhance offense..

[DraftKings: Free $25,000 March Madness Fantasy Basketball Contest]

BYU and Ole Miss provided a glimpse of what some would like the game to be Tuesday night in a First Four matchup in the NCAA tournament in combining for 184 points in a game Ole Miss won 94-90 in regulation time.

Of course, the high scoring affair had more to do with both teams’ defensive deficiencies than genius offense. Those defensive problems were the primary reason why the Cougars and Rebels found themselves playing in the First Four in the first place.

The first half showed why many were skeptical the Rebels would even receive an at-large bid when they allowed the Cougars to score 49 points and make 10 of 15 3-pointers. The second half showed how dangerous the Rebels can be when they’re hitting shots and feeling good about themselves offensively.

The Rebels overcame BYU’s 17-point halftime lead with a blistering 62-point second half to advance to play No. 6 seed Xavier, a battled tested team from the Big East.

BYU's collapse came three years after it pulled off a 25-point comeback to beat Iona in a First Four game in the 2012 tournament.

The loss ended the stellar college career of BYU senior Tyler Haws, who became one of the top-20 scorers in NCAA history in the game. He scored 33 points, the fifth 30-point game of his season. But it wasn't enough to overcome Ole Miss junior Stefan Moody's 26 points, the majority of which came in the second half. Moody went 5-for-9 from behind the 3-point line.

[Yahoo Sports Tourney Pick'em: Fill out your bracket and get a free Big Gulp Drink]

BYU seemed to be cruising to an easy victory when the second half began, but at the second media timeout with slightly less than 12 minutes remaining, Ole Miss and trimmed the lead to seven and completely flipped the momentum with a series of dunks that seemed to ignite the Rebels. At the 7:11 mark when another television timeout arrived, Ole Miss held a four-point advantage and BYU had given up 40 points in less than 13 minutes.

BYU is the nation's second highest scoring team this season and had been able to overcome its defensive shortcomings much of the year because of its offensive prowess. But it's easier to do that in the West Coast Conference than it is in the NCAA tournament.

All five Ole Miss starters scored in double figures and Ladarius White came off the bench to score 10 as well. It was quite a turnaround performance for coach Andy Kennedy's team not only from half to half but also from the end of the season when the Rebels lost four out of five to fall onto the bubble and barely squeak into the field.

Now we;ll see if they can build on it with an upset of the Musketeers or if Tuesday's result was simply a product of two bad defensive teams playing and somebody having to win.

News sport : Winnipeg Jets fans mock Sharks with ‘who’s your captain?’ chant (Video)

The San Jose Sharks took the captaincy away from star Joe Thornton last summer, opting for a four-player alternate captain leadership group that included … well, Joe Thornton, quite confusingly.

That captaincy was in the news recently as Thornton and GM Doug Wilson revealed behind the scenes tension over that move.

If there’s one thing we know about the chant-happy fans in Winnipeg, it’s that they know their current events. So in the third period of the Sharks’ 5-2 loss to the Winnipeg Jets, the fans at the MTS Centre hilariously started a “WHO’S YOUR CAPTAIN?!” chant, asking a question the Sharks have no doubt been asking themselves since last summer.

This chant enters the pantheon of great Winnipeg fan chants, along with the brutally hilarious “silver medal!” in honor of Ryan Miller to the equally entertaining “Crosby’s better!” chant that welcomed Alex Ovechkin to Manitoba to the still-baffling “TORTORELLA” chant.

Oh, and there was also that time when they threatening to all show up wearing hockey helmets to mock that Chicago fan who stole Adam Pardy’s.

These fans are reason enough to hope the Jets make the playoff cut for the first time. Can you imagine the atmosphere for a first-round home game? Better yet: Can you imagine the comedic potential?

Monaco beat gutsy Arsenal

Monaco rode their luck and survived an Arsenal onslaught to reach the Champions League quarter-finals on away goals after a 2-0 home defeat.

|||

Monaco - Monaco rode their luck and survived an Arsenal onslaught to reach the Champions League quarter-finals on away goals after a 2-0 home defeat saw the tie finish 3-3 on aggregate on Tuesday.

Arsenal, looking to become the first team to overcome a two-goal home first-leg deficit in the Champions League, came agonisingly close to progressing after Olivier Giroud and substitute Aaron Ramsey scored in each half.

But the principality side's 3-1 win at the Emirates was just enough to see them through after Monaco keeper Danijel Subasic spectacularly denied striker Giroud five minutes from time.

The hosts took a cautious approach as they tried to preserve their first-leg lead, failing to get a single shot on target, and were fortunate to make it into the last eight.

Arsenal got off to a sluggish start in the last 16, second leg but Monaco struggled to contain them once Arsene Wenger's determined team got into their stride.

The London side had the first clear chance but Giroud's header from Hector Bellerin's cross went just wide of the top corner.

Arsenal's Laurent Koscielny came closer in the 23rd minute when he blasted the ball against the bar from a few metres out although the France defender was harshly adjudged to be offside even though the ball came to him from a Monaco head.

Arsenal stepped up the pressure and were rewarded in the 36th when Subasic denied Giroud, only for the ball to fall into the path of the France forward who fired into the roof of the net.

A wave of panic then hit the Monaco players and Arsenal forward Danny Welbeck's attempt from just outside the area was blocked by defender Aymen Abdennour.

Welbeck and Giroud were again denied as Monaco rode their luck to reach the break only one goal down on the night.

Subasic was made to work again seven minutes into the second half, tipping Mesut Ozil's free kick over the bar.

Monaco suddenly unleashed a flurry of attacks around the hour mark but the Arsenal defence, marshalled by Koscielny, held firm.

Wenger brought on attacking midfielder Ramsey for the more defensive Francis Coquelin in the 62nd, shortly before Monaco coach Leonardo Jardim took the opposite approach by replacing striker Dimitar Berbatov with midfielder Bernardo Silva.

Theo Walcott was then brought on for Welbeck as Arsenal pushed for a second goal, which came in the 79th when Ramsey fired a low shot past Subasic after Walcott had hit the post. – Reuters

Wits teach Tuks a lesson

Wits marched into the Nedbank Cup quarterfinals after a 3-0 rout of the University of Pretoria at the Wits Stadium.

|||

Johannesburg – Wits marched into the Nedbank Cup quarterfinals after a 3-0 rout of the University of Pretoria at the Wits Stadium.

Cornelis Kwakman opened the scoring in the 39th minute before Sibusiso Vilakazi (56) and Henrico Botes (63) ensured the victory in the university clash.

Wits had a lukewarm start to the match, with AmaTuks holding their own in the opening exchanges.

On the right wing Jabulani Shongwe made a run eight minutes into the game and delivered a searching ball in the direction of Botes, but AmaTuks goalkeeper Washington Arubi collected well.

It would be a clash that was centred around strikers, Botes and his counterpart Geoffrey Massa.

Both play a pivotal role in holding up the ball for their teams on the counter-attack and in long ball situations.

In the 12th minute Massa used his bulky frame to bulldoze his way past Phumlani Ntshangase, but his subsequent strike at goal flew over the target.

Wits' attacking duo of Shongwe and Vilakazi gave the opposition defence some problems with their quick interplays.

In the 23rd minute Vilakazi dribbled past Tebogo Monyai inside the box and served the ball to Papy Faty, who put too much power in his shot.

AmaTuks defender Siyabonga Ngubane spearheaded a push into the opposition half, but when he was dispossessed of the ball his team was nearly punished on the counter.

Midfielder Dillon Sheppard attacked Monyai head-on and easily beat him, but AmaTuks were bailed out by defender Grant Kekana in the 27th minute with a solid challenge.

AmaTuks striker Thabo Mnyamane had some flashes of brilliance in the first half and in the 34th minute blasted the ball on target to force Moneeb Josephs into a superb stop.

As a result of a rebound from a corner-kick, Kwakman opened the scoring with an exquisite half-volley that beat Arubi minutes before the interval.

At the half the only thing that separated the teams was the one clear cut chance that was converted by Dutch defender.

Although it had been an exciting half there was only a handful of clear scoring opportunities.

In the second half Wits were intent on extending their lead with Vilakazi displaying great tenacity that suggested that they were hungry for goals.

Wits strikers Chris Katongo was played-through on goal by a Vilakazi pass, but the veteran’s lack of pace saw Kekana catch-up and make a splendid tackle.

However, two consecutive goals would follow for the home side with Vilakazi and Botes securing the match. – Sapa

News sport : Bruce Bochy says Giants 'not even close to being ready' for opening day

The wins and losses don't matter much in spring training, which is why on record alone, we wouldn't be too worried about the defending champion San Francisco Giants. They're 4-12, tied for the most spring losses in all of baseball.

This part, however, heightens concerns somewhat: Manager Bruce Bochy said Tuesday after the Giants lost 10-0 to the Arizona Diamondbacks, that his team is "not even close to being ready" for opening day. It's one thing to have a poor spring record if the skipper sees a team moving in the right direction, but for the Giants, things sound all bad right now.

"I know it’s spring training," Bochy said Tuesday to a group of reporters, which included the Yahoo Sports video team. "But this is as tough a stretch as I’ve seen, even in spring, in all facets of the game. We’re not doing anything very well right now, from pitching to swinging the bats, defense."

[Yahoo Sports Fantasy Baseball: Sign up and join a league today!]

Keep in mind that the Giants are without their emotional leader Hunter Pence, who broke his forearm when he was hit by a pitch on March 5. They're also coming off a lackluster offseason in which Pablo Sandoval fled for the Boston Red Sox and the Giants weren't able to add a power bat to their lineup. They traded for third baseman Casey McGehee and signed outfielder Nori Aoki, who hit a combined total of five home runs last season. So there are legitimate concerns about the Giants' offense as they move toward opening day.

Bochy still has a couple weeks to get his squad in order before the Giants open their season April 6 against the D-backs. Bochy's regarded as one of the finest managers in MLB, with a knack for turning his team into winners at the right time. The Giants' three World Series rings in five years prove it. So if anybody can whip the defending champs into shape, it's Bochy.

News sport : Jack Haley, a member of the record-setting 1996 Chicago Bulls, dies at 51

Jack Haley, a member of the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls team that set an NBA record for wins in a season, died on Monday. His former coach, current New York Knicks president Phil Jackson, shocked the NBA by breaking the news with this tweet on Tuesday afternoon:

[DraftKings: FREE entry to huge cash Fantasy Basketball Contest with first deposit]

Other former Bulls, teammates during Haley’s two different stints with the team, also offered tribute:

The Orange County Register confirmed the news soon after:

The coroner's site said Haley died at Los Alamitos Medical Center on Monday afternoon and that there were no signs of foul play.

His family said in a statement released by the Lakers that an autopsy was performed and found heart disease as the cause of death.

"It is with great sadness that the Haley family announces the passing of our beloved father, son, and brother," Haley's family said in the statement. "Jack was honored and grateful for the opportunity to play in the NBA for nine years, alongside world-class athletes with the Los Angeles Lakers, Chicago Bulls, San Antonio Spurs, and New Jersey Nets."

Los Angeles Times beat reporter Ben Bolch then passed along word that Haley, who had been seen working the Los Angeles Lakers studio show following Lakers games, had been sick for some time:

Haley was a burly UCLA product that was originally drafted in the fourth round by Chicago in 1987. After a year spent playing in Spain he enjoyed a stint acting in Aerosmith’s video for “Love in an Elevator.”

The former Bruin made his NBA debut with Chicago in the fall of 1988. The center played sparingly under then-coach Doug Collins, and was waived by the Bulls (now featuring Jackson as head coach) 11 games into his second season. The 6-10 big man bounced around with the Nets, Lakers (in playing with Magic Johnson in the exhibition season, Haley became one of just three NBA players to act as teammates with Magic and Michael Jordan) before settling in with the Spurs in 1993:

It was as a Spur reserve for two seasons that Haley would develop a friendship with forward Dennis Rodman, an outcast that did not have many friends on the team he was routinely suspended by. Haley and Rodman hung out together constantly, with Haley following Rodman to all manner of Las Vegas haunts, as documented in a 1995 cover story on Rodman from Sports Illustrated:

``You need a name,'' yells Jack (Une) Haley, Rodman's friend, teammate and guardian angel. A seven-footer who seldom plays but has ridden Rodman's coattails to a small celebrity of his own, Haley is the Spurs' middle man, the guy who alternately explains Rodman to the world and explains the rules of the world to Rodman. Though Rodman seldom listens--``He rebels just to rebel,'' Haley says--the two form an odd couple who come with their own lingo.

[...]

Sleep comes after Saturday's sunrise and is ended rudely at nine o'clock by the voice of Haley, who has tracked Rodman down and telephoned his suite at the Mirage. ``What the ---- are you doing?'' Haley rails at Manley. After some back and forth, Manley wakes up Rodman, now $5,000 lighter, and puts him on the phone.

The dilemma here is nothing new. Rodman has been in trouble all season with the Spurs. San Antonio general manager Gregg Popovich, a former Marine, and coach Bob Hill set rules for the team, and Rodman decides the rules are stupid and disregards them. Rodman refers to Hill as Boner and has nothing very positive to say about the hard-line Popovich.

When the Chicago Bulls decided to take a chance on Rodman after Boner and “the hard-line Popovich” had seen enough of his antics, Haley was brought to Chicago to act as a translator of sorts. Because Haley had worked with former teammates Jordan and Pippen before, and because he had spent over a year on the same bench as Phil Jackson, Haley wasn’t in Chicago to act as Rodman’s babysitter (quite the contrary, as Haley was out just as late as Rodman was at most nights at their favorite haunt, Crobar), but as a go-between and settling force.

To hear Haley tell it, though, even that side of his Chicago career was misrepresented. From a 1998 column from K.C. Johnson at the Chicago Tribune:

"You can ask Phil Jackson. I have never to this day spoken to Phil regarding Dennis in any capacity," Haley said. "I was never here to baby-sit Dennis. He is a grown man. I had dinner with Dennis (Sunday) night. We are friends, period."

[Follow Dunks Don't Lie on Tumblr: The best slams from all of basketball]

Because the 32-year old Haley was literally fifth on Chicago’s depth chart at center in 1995-96, though, the big man wouldn’t suit up as an active player until the final game of the season. With Chicago looking to win game a record 72 games in 82 tries, Jack Haley finally took the court in uniform to score five points in just seven minutes of play against the then-Washington Bullets.

Haley would not make the playoff roster later that week, and with Rodman somewhat established as a stable force in Chicago he would not return to the team, and play in the minor leagues the next season. Haley acted as a fringe rotation player and unofficial assistant coach for the New Jersey Nets before playing his last game in 1998.

The NBA veteran will forever be known as the player that acted as Dennis Rodman’s caddie for one special year, but Haley wanted no part of being seen that way. Haley, who missed the entire 1992-93 season due to knee injuries, always contended that the team-listed “knee tendinitis” that stopped him from playing all but one of Chicago’s 100 games in 1995-96, bristled at the suggestion that he was merely there to mind Dennis.

From Melissa Isaacson at the Chicago Tribune:

Nevertheless, the perception persists because Haley hasn't played one second, spending all his time on the Bulls' injured list. Prompted by a complaint from a team, the league office sent a doctor to examine Haley's knee earlier in the season to determine if the condition was legitimate.

"Obviously, I failed with flying colors," said Haley, who has had three major surgeries--not counting arthroscopes--including reconstruction of his anterior cruciate ligament. "My knees had swelled to the size of grapefruits. I have multiple scars from surgeries, and I must be faking it.

"That's the worst part for me, not being able to play and having people think I'm either faking it or just here because of Dennis Rodman. It bothers me not being able to get out and remind the fans of Chicago as well as my family that I am an NBA basketball player, and have been for eight years."

And three seasons more following that year. And then time as an assistant ...

... and as a respected color analyst on television. Enough of an impact to be mourned by the NBA community some years later, even if Jack Haley’s championship experience was only limited to those seven ragged minutes back in 1996.

News sport : Three Morgan State players stabbed in incident on campus

(MSU Athletics Media Relations) Three members of the Morgan State football team were stabbed on campus on Tuesday afternoon in an incident that left one “seriously injured,” according to the Baltimore Sun.

University spokesman Clint Coleman told the Sun that a suspect was seen outside a school cafeteria “wildly swinging” a knife in an area near residence halls and a practice football field. The incident took place at around 2:05 p.m.

Police said that one victim was “stabbed in the chest” and is currently hospitalized and in “very serious” condition. Fortunately, the victims’ injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, Coleman said.

Police Commissioner Anthony W. Batts confirmed that the victims were football players.

According to Coleman, the incident may be connected to a fight that occurred at a “campus dance.” Coleman also said that a suspect is in custody.

From the Sun:

Coleman said a suspect was in custody, and that the incident may be connected to fights over the weekend at a campus dance. That event drew 1,200 people had to be broken up after the fights broke out, police said. The party, sponsored by the student government and Greek letter organizations, had marked the first on-campus party since a moratorium had been placed on such events a year ago, in part due to a similar incident.

The football team, which had its first day of spring practices on Tuesday, went 7-6 last year and won a share of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, earning a trip to the FCS playoffs.
