News sport : NFL players shocked by Chris Borland's retirement, but respect his decision

FILE - In this Sunday, Nov. 23, 2014, file photo, San Francisco 49ers inside linebacker Chris Borland (50) tackles Washington Redskins running back Alfred Morris (46) during the second half of an NFL football game in Santa Clara, Calif. (AP Photo/Tony Avelar, File) Chris Borland shocked the NFL world Monday night when he announced his retirement from the game at age 24. Borland, a very productive middle linebacker, played just one year in the NFL for the San Francisco 49ers, but decided to walk away due to fears about his long-term health.

Many NFL players took to Twitter in response to the news. Some were understandably surprised, but most were supportive and respected Borland’s tough decision.

San Francisco teammates Alfonso Smith, Tramaine Brock and Chase Thomas were stunned to see another teammate retire a week after Patrick Willis announced his retirement.

Other players from across the league were quick to offer words of support.

Additionally, several of Borland's college teammates from Wisconsin let him know that they have his back.

Seattle Seahawks linebacker Bobby Wagner and Denver Broncos linebacker Brandon Marshall looked at Borland's decision from a different perspective.

Many players probably feel the way Wagner does, but can respect Borland's decision to step away at the same time. There's no way it was an easy decision for Borland to walk away from a lucrative career after just one season. He made 108 tackles in only eight starts. His career was on the rise, but he decided the long-term health risks were just not worth it.

News sport : Pact between Jahlil Okafor, Tyus Jones withstood many obstacles

Play Tourney Pick'em | Fill out your bracket | Print it | Celebrity Challenge

As they celebrated demolishing Argentina by 40 points to win the FIBA U-16 Americas tournament four years ago, the stars of a talent-laden U.S. team also felt a twinge of sadness at having played their last game together.

They joked about how much fun it would be to enroll en masse at the same prep school the following year and steamroll every opponent who dared schedule them.

For a speedy pass-first point guard from Minnesota and a powerful 6-foot-10 center from Chicago, the idea of sticking together was more serious than for the rest of their peers. Tyus Jones and Jahlil Okafor came home from that trip convinced teaming up would be their best chance to win a championship in college because of how well they had worked with one another during practices and games and how quickly they had bonded off the floor.

"It started off with basketball, with us wanting to win a national title," Okafor said. "He's a point guard, I'm a big man and we complemented each other really well when we were on the same team in practice. Then we also got extremely close off the floor and he became like my brother. I've always said if you take basketball out of the equation, I'd still want to go to college with Tyus."

In an era when package deals in recruiting often prove too complicated to execute and almost always result in a messy breakup, the Okafor-Jones partnership is an exception to that rule. They grew to be best friends during the recruiting process, they jointly committed to Duke in Nov. 2013 and they've thrived alongside each other as freshmen, leading the Blue Devils to a 29-4 record and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament.

One big reason the arrangement between Okafor and Jones did not crumble the way so many others have is how mutually beneficial the pairing was to both of them. Whereas other package deals have featured players whose redundant skills made them destined to cannibalize one another's playing time or scoring chances, Jones' knack for feeding the post and Okafor's willingness to pass out of a double team enable them to create shots for each other.

The tight-knit friendship between Okafor and Jones was also key.

Jahlil Okafor (15) reacts to a defensive play by guard Tyus Jones (5) against NC State. (Rob Kinnan-USA TODAY Sports) Even though they lived more than 400 miles apart and often went weeks without spending time together in person, the two highly touted prospects spoke as often as friends who live next door to one another. They updated each other via call or text after conversations with college coaches and were conscientious enough to remove a school from consideration if its style of play, roster makeup or coaching staff was a better fit for one of them than the other.

The mutual trust between Okafor and Jones also extended to their families, who already knew one another well from spending many an afternoon together in the stands during AAU events or USA Basketball tournaments. Tyus' mother Debbie Jones and Jahlil's father Chukwudi Okafor felt comfortable having both families make joint visits to schools and chatted frequently to keep one another in the loop.

"Constant communication was the biggest thing," Debbie Jones said. "It involved a lot of conference calls with me and Chukwudi, me Chukwudi, Tyus and Jahlil and then even my sister and Jahlil's aunt. We had lots and lots of discussions about the whole process and what we were looking for. We just made it work."

If the past decade of recruiting coverage has taught us anything, it's that a successful package deal isn't nearly as easy Okafor and Jones made it look. For every success story like Greg Oden and Mike Conley (Ohio State) or Marcus Smart and Phil Forte (Oklahoma State) there are numerous others that have fallen apart when the two prospects couldn't agree on a school.

McDonald's All-American Avery Bradley confirmed in spring 2008 that he and best friend and high school teammate Abdul Gaddy were a package deal, gushing to the Tacoma News Tribune, "We're perfect together." Within six months, Bradley had signed with Texas and Gaddy was headed to Washington.

Class of 2013 standouts Cat Barber and Troy Williams discussed jointly selecting the same school for months until one landed at NC State and the other at Indiana. Mississippi native Malik Newman and Wisconsin native Diamond Stone publicly proclaimed they were "100 percent" a package going into last summer, but by mid-July the two elite class of 2015 prospects acknowledged they were parting ways.

"Every year we hear about guys that want to be package deals, and more often than not it never works out," Rivals.com recruiting analyst Eric Bossi said. "Until they start happening with regularity, I'm of the opinion that you kind of need to prove to me that it's going to happen before I believe it. By and large, when discussing package deals, I take them with a huge grain of salt."

The checkered history of package deals is a huge reason many were skeptical of Okafor and Jones when they first publicly revealed their plans to attend college together. What the naysayers may not have realized, however, is the two top prospects had known each other since third grade when their AAU teams faced off at a tournament in Orlando.

Tyus Jones attempts a shot over Jahlil Okafor during an AAU game when both were in third grade (via Debbie Jones) They first made eye contact in the bathroom before the game when Okafor caught Jones staring at him. Okafor was already 5-foot-9 and towered over other players his age.

"The first thing I thought when I saw him was, 'How is he the same age I am?'" Jones recalled. "He was extremely big and he grabbed all the rebounds."

The relationship between Okafor and Jones blossomed into a friendship when they were together at grassroots tournaments and as USA Basketball teammates. They bonded over their common experiences in basketball, similar family values and fierce competitiveness.

Any chance he gets, Okafor is quick to bring up his 3-1 record head-to-head against Jones in AAU competition. One of those matchups featured so much trash talk between the two future Duke teammates that the referee actually briefly stopped the game.

"The referee told us to calm down," Okafor said, laughing. "He didn't realize we were real-life brothers off the floor. He wanted us to have better sportsmanship, so we had to tell him we were good."

When Okafor and Jones revealed they intended to jointly select a college, it was a discouraging development for schools who either had a closer relationship with one than the other or only had a starting job available for one. Duke assistant coach Jeff Capel believes that led some of his competitors to go to great lengths to try to break up the package deal.

"People tried to divide them," Capel said. "I'd read these stories that they're not as close as you think, and I'd be talking to them on group chat and they'd be laughing at it. They would make fun of the stuff that's out there."

The Duke coaching staff was initially skeptical the Okafor-Jones package deal would ever come to fruition, but the more Capel got to know the two players and their families, the more clear it became to him the arrangement was legit. As a result, he formulated a plan for the unusual recruitment, communicating with Okafor and Jones via group text, inviting them to visit campus together but also pursuing them as individuals too.

With Jones, Capel pointed out Duke hadn't offered a scholarship to any other class of 2014 point guards and emphasized that he was a top priority whether Okafor came too or not. With Okafor, Capel was proactive in addressing Duke's reputation for running a guard-oriented offense that seldom prioritized playing through the low post.

"One of the scare tactics other programs use against us for bigs is they'll tell them, 'All you're going to do is screen and rebound,'" Capel said. "We knew Jah was hearing that, so we tried to combat it early. We told him, 'This is what you're going to hear. When we've had guys like you, we threw the ball to Mason Plumlee when he was a senior. When Elton Brand was here, he got the ball. The offense ran through him.' I think we got through to him and I also don't think it hurt us that we had Tyus helping us, talking in his ear."

Tyus Jones and Jahlil Okafor dressed as Run DMC for Halloween (via Okafor's instagram) Capel felt good about Duke's chances of landing Jones from the end of his sophomore year until he committed. Okafor was more coy but he too eventually favored Duke over fellow suitors Kansas, Baylor and Kentucky.

"We fell in love with Duke when we first came on campus," Okafor said. "It fit both of us and it fit both of our families, so we felt very comfortable."

The inspiration for Okafor and Jones since they arrived at Duke has been to try to win a championship together, the same goal that motivated them years ago to make plans to attend the same college and to try to buck the star-crossed history of package deals.

Okafor has met sky-high expectations as a freshman, solidifying himself as a contender to be national player of the year and the No. 1 pick in this year's NBA draft by averaging 17.7 points and 9.0 rebounds despite frequent double teams. Jones has shown poise, leadership and a knack for big-game heroics while tallying 11.6 points and 5.8 assists per game.

Their chemistry on the floor is remarkable for two guys who really only played together sporadically prior to arriving at Duke, but their bond off the floor is even stronger. They live together. They have their own handshakes. They even both dressed as rappers from Run DMC for Halloween.

At a postgame dinner with their families a few weeks ago, someone passed around a photo of Jones attempting a floater over a towering Okafor from the AAU game in Orlando the day they first met. To everyone at the table, the photo was a symbol of how far Okafor and Jones had come since that time.

First opponents. Then teammates. Then friends. Now brothers.

"We're really one big family now," Jones said. "That's what we've come to be the last few years. His dad is just another dad to me and my mom is just another mom to him. That's how close we really are."

News sport : Bill Belichick: Vince Wilfork is the 'best defensive lineman I ever coached'

After the New England Patriots decided not to pick up his option earlier this month, defensive tackle Vince Wilfork signed a two-year deal with the Houston Texans on Monday.

Despite the two sides parting ways, Patriots head coach Bill Belichick released a statement lauding Wilfork and calling him “the best defensive lineman (he) ever coached.” That’s high praise from Belichick, who has coached in the NFL for 40 years.

Here is Belichick’s full statement, via Patriots.com:

"Few players reached or will ever reach the special level of Vince Wilfork. He is a great champion and one of the classiest people I have ever been around – just a kind, genuine and giving person who was all about our team, football, winning and bringing joy to others. There may have never been anyone at his position with as much strength, toughness, intelligence, instinctiveness and athleticism. He is the best defensive linemen I ever coached, an all-time great Patriot whose place on our team will be missed but whose remarkable career as a Patriot will be remembered forever."

The Patriots picked Wilfork in the first round of the 2004 draft and he spent 11 productive seasons with the franchise. He won two Super Bowls with the team and also was named to five Pro Bowls. In 158 games, Wilfork registered 516 tackles.

Now the 33-year-old Wilfork heads to Houston where he will reunite with Romeo Crennel, the current Texans’ defensive coordinator who held the same position in New England when Wilfork was drafted. He’ll likely set up in the middle at nose tackle between All Pro J.J. Watt and 2014 top pick Jadeveon Clowney.

Barca taking nothing for granted

Barcelona coach Luis Enrique said his team will need to be at their best if they are to secure a place in the last eight of the Champions League.

|||

Barcelona - Barcelona are not taking progress for granted despite holding a 2-1 advantage heading into Wednesday's Champions League last 16, second leg at home to Manchester City, coach Luis Enrique said.

Only twice in the Champions League era has a team won a knockout round tie after losing the first leg at home but Luis Enrique said Barca will still need to be at their best if they are to secure a place in the last eight.

Seeking a record eighth consecutive quarter-final appearance, Barca have progressed 33 out of the 35 times they won the first leg away in European competition, most recently against City at the same stage last season.

“What is clear is that we are not taking anything for granted,” Luis Enrique told a news conference previewing the clash at the Nou Camp.

“We will be facing one of the favourites for the competition, for the title,” added the former Spain and Barca midfielder.

“We are still only halfway through the tie and have to play the return yet and looking at their players we can see they have the potential to make life difficult for us.

“They got back into the tie in the first leg despite our great start to the game. We are not taking anything for granted.”

Luis Enrique, who repeatedly said Barca were not letting Sunday's La Liga 'Clasico' at home to Real Madrid distract them, confirmed that Spain midfielder Sergio Busquets would not feature against City as he is still sidelined by an ankle injury.

Ivan Rakitic or Javier Mascherano will likely play in the holding central role and will be up against City's former Barca midfielder Yaya Toure, who returns after suspension.

“He (Busquets) is a key player for the way he understands the game and his positional sense,” Barca playmaker Andres Iniesta told Tuesday's news conference.

“It's a shame ... but we have other players to fall back on who can do the job well.”

Barca are looking to join holders Real, Bayern Munich, Porto and Paris St Germain, who all went through to the quarter-finals last week, in Friday's draw. – Reuters

News sport : Fantasy Baseball Position Primer: Starting Pitcher

Whatever statistical lines of demarcation you've used in the past to define good, bad and ordinary pitching performances, it's well past time for an update. We've hammered away at this general theme in earlier Position Primers, you might have noticed. The run-scoring environment has changed substantially in recent seasons, so fantasy managers need to adapt.

[Yahoo Sports Fantasy Baseball: Sign up and join a league today!]

Back in 2004, for example, the Atlanta Braves led all major league teams in ERA at 3.74. Last year, the average MLB pitching staff posted a 3.74 ERA. Seventeen teams finished below that number, and the average National League ERA was 3.66.

Among all individual pitchers who tossed more than 140.0 innings in '04, only 19 posted ERAs below 3.50. Last season, 26 pitchers delivered sub-3.00 ERAs with over 140 frames of work, and 48 hurlers were below 3.50.

So yeah, times have changed. The strike-zone is clearly expanding while hitters are quite possibly shrinking. Thus, many of the statistical plateaus that seemed significant a decade ago are now completely uninteresting.

As Michael Salfino mentioned in his latest Pitching By the Numbers, "the most powerful pitching stat is some variation of strikeouts and walks." And this isn't some crackpot Salfino-ish take, either; it's actually a widely accepted principle. If you're looking for a shorthand method to identify the game's most effective arms, focus on defense-independent outs and defense-independent base-runners allowed. It's a fairly simple, sensible idea.

Over time, we've settled on the notion that any pitcher with a K-to-BB ratio of 3.0 or better merits serious attention in fantasy leagues. It's an imperfect standard, certainly, because ... well, because of guys like Joe Blanton and Ricky Nolasco. But still, it's been a useful guide over the years. These days, however, a whole big mess of starters are finishing with K/BB ratios north of 3.0. Here's a quick look at the total number of pitchers each year who've topped that mark since 2000 (minimum 140.0 IP):

2014 – 51

2013 – 44

2012 – 38

2011 – 39

2010 – 26

2009 – 26

2008 – 24

2007 – 21

2006 – 20

2005 – 30

2004 – 17

2003 – 20

2002 – 14

2001 – 17

2000 – 13

This man had as many wins as walks (16) last year. (Tommy Gilligan-USA TODAY Sports) That's silly, right?

Again, the previous standard of excellence no longer seems as impressive. Last year, 112 major league pitchers threw at least 140.0 innings, and 51 of them produced K-to-BB ratios above 3.0. A dozen pitchers finished above 5.0 (including 2015 draft value Brandon McCarthy), with another 10 topping 4.0. Phil Hughes led MLB with a ridiculous 11.63 K/BB. (Hughes' current Yahoo average draft position is a similarly ridiculous 146.3, suggesting that many of you were forever scarred by the NYY years.)

Revise your old targets, friends. This will serve as your final warning. Just as you shouldn't bring a 2004 preview magazine to a 2015 draft — you'd leave the room with Esteban Loaiza and both Giles brothers — you can't bring old performance standards to today's game.

Position averages for the top-48 starting pitchers, last three years

2013, SP1 — 14.5 W, 211.8 K, 2.70 ERA, 1.02 WHIP

2013, SP2 — 13.1 W, 163.0 K, 2.95 ERA, 1.14 WHIP

2012, SP4 — 11.7 W, 133.3 K, 3.60 ERA, 1.20 WHIP

Note: We’re treating the starters as four positions, with “SP1” representing the 12 highest-ranked players. The pitchers ranked 13-24 are SP2s, pitchers 25-36 are SP3s, etc.

News sport : UNC to pay $335,000 in settlement with former academic adviser

Former North Carolina academic adviser Mary Willingham will receive $335,000 in a settlement from her suit against the university.

However, Willingham will not receive her job back, which is what her suit originally requested, along with damages and the recovery of all legal fees. The settlement covers her legal fees and, according to WRAL.com, $40,000 in back pay. The school will also cover mediation costs.

"We appreciate the efforts of the mediator to help us achieve a successful and timely conclusion to the mediation," North Carolina spokesperson Rick White said in a statement. "We believe the settlement is in the best interest of the University and allows us to move forward and fully focus on other important issues."

Willingham's surveys of North Carolina athletes from 2004-2012 that found a significant portion had below-average reading levels. The university disputed her findings in January 2014 and said she misinterpreted her data, rendering her findings "virtually meaningless."

A report released in October detailed the academic fraud that's gone on at North Carolina and said approximately 1,500 athletes have taken bogus classes.

Willingham resigned from her position at the end of the 2014 spring semester. Her research had been barred by the school pending approval from a review board.

"I wanted to show other potential whistleblowers out there that it's possible to survive a fight with a big-money machine," Willingham said in a February statement after it was announced the terms of the settlement had been agreed upon. "I thought it was time to get focused back on the issue of athletes and their educations -- to correct the injustice in the NCAA system. I'm satisfied with the result."

News sport : Kris Bryant can't wait

On Monday afternoon, Chicago Cubs prospect Kris Bryant had a miserable day at the plate by his recent standards, merely going 1-for-3 with an opposite field double off the wall.

Normally, he does stuff like this and this and this .

[Yahoo Sports Fantasy Baseball: Sign up and join a league today!]

Bryant is now nine games into his second spring with the Cubs and he's 10-for-23 with two doubles, six homers and an OPS of 1.804. No other ballplayer on any team has hit more than three spring home runs.

By now, you're all no doubt familiar with Bryant's resume. He led all minor league players in homers last season, hitting 43 bombs across two levels, stealing 15 bags and slashing .325/.438/.661. He was the game's top amateur player in 2013, then the minor league player of the year in 2014. Bryant may not be a flawless prospect — he struck out 162 times last year — but the Cubs have yet to find a level at which he struggles.

As Chris Cwik discussed on Friday, Chicago now encounters a tough-but-awesome problem regarding Bryant's debut — it's the usual service-time game, really. Delaying his arrival by two weeks gains the team another season of control of the player; delaying his debut by two excruciating months could avoid super-two status. Obviously no reasonable analyst would argue that Bryant isn't the best option to start for the Cubs at third on opening day. However, no reasonable baseball executive would be eager to swap two weeks of Bryant in 2015 for a full year of his services down the road, in what should be his prime.

For fantasy investors, the dilemma is this: If you draft Bryant in March, how long will he sit on your bench as a useless decoration? Does he have a shot at the opening day roster, or will he be a mid-April arrival, following the George Spring protocol? Or will he seriously be shipped to Iowa until early-June?

Considering the team's expectations for the current season, it seems, to me, unlikely that the Cubs will stash Bryant for months. Fans would riot; winnable games would be lost. My current expectation is that Bryant will reach the majors shortly after tax day, roughly 10 or 12 games into Chicago's season. Thus, I've ranked him as if we'll get nearly a full season of production in 2015. As of this writing, Bryant is tenth on my board at third, which makes me extremely bullish relative to the industry (though not quite as bullish as Del Don).

We can say with confidence that whenever Bryant arrives, he'll be a heart-of-the-order hitter for the Cubs. It hardly seems crazy to hope for something like a 75-28-90-10-.268 rookie season. Bryant still offers profit potential at his current Yahoo ADP (131.6), despite the hype. Feel free to offer a full-season projection in comments, as well as an ETA. If you're buying, let's hear it. Drafting and dealing? Please discuss.

This is a conversation, gamers, not a monologue...

News sport : Reports: Colorado State hires Joe Parker as athletic director

Colorado State will hire former Texas Tech deputy athletic director Joe Parker as it's new athletic director.

The news was reported by multiple outlets, including GoldandGreennews.com.

From Gold and Green News:

The tenured Parker spent eight years at his alma mater, Michigan, prior to joining Texas Tech. In his time in Ann Arbor, Parker was the associate athletics director for development for three years at UM before being promoted to senior athletics director for development and corporate relations for his final five years at Michigan.

AT UM, Parker was a key cog on a four-person project that oversaw over $400 million in capital improvements, including a renovation to Michigan Stadium, the Ross Academic Center and seven other on-campus athletics facilities.

Per the Coloradoan, a news conference is scheduled for Tuesday to announce Parker's hire.

Parker's experience with facilities improvement is key for Colorado State, which had been in the midst of a debate about a new football stadium. Former athletic director Jack Graham parted ways with the school after he advocated for a new on-campus football stadium that wasn't meeting its fundraising goal.

However, after reviewing the options to replace or renovate Colorado State's current home, Hughes Stadium, committees at CSU endorsed an on-campus stadium as the most viable option. The stadium is expected to be completed before the 2017 season.

Parker's Power Five conference ties could also be a boon if Colorado State stays successful in football and basketball and is considered for conference expansion if there's another round of realignment. The Rams are currently in the Mountain West Conference.

News sport : Marcos Ambrose temporarily out at V8 Supercars team

Former Sprint Cup Series driver Marcos Ambrose has requested to be temporarily removed from his Australian V8 Supercars seat, according to his team.

DJR Team Penske released a statement Tuesday that said Ambrose came to the team's owners, Dick Johnson and Roger Penske, and said he needed to be better prepared for his return to the series.

Ambrose came back to the V8 Supercars series after a stint in NASCAR. He drove full-time in the Sprint Cup Series from 2009-2014. Before he came to NASCAR, he had 28 Supercars wins and won championships in 2003 and 2004.

“I want to thank DJR Team Penske for the opportunity and support through the process of transitioning back into V8 Supercars. I would like to make it clear that I am fully committed to this team, ” Ambrose said in a statement.

“Although this is a decision which has been hard to make, it has become clear to me over the first two events of the season that I need more experience in these cars to do what is required of the lead driver and to be competitive for the team and our partners. Scott is a great driver, has already worked with the team and has more experience in these cars, which will give the team the best chance to be successful right now.

The team said Ambrose is expected to return to the team at some point in 2015. He participated in the last three races of the season in 2014 and didn't finish higher than 16th. In the first two races of 2015 he also finished 16th and finished 12th in the third race of the year. Those starting positions had been affected by poor qualifying results. Until the third race of 2015, he hadn't qualified inside the top 20.

In the four Supercars races at last weekend's Formula 1 weekend, Ambrose's highest finish was 18th.

V8 Supercars competitor Lee Holdsworth told Inside Supercars he believed Ambrose was thrown for a loop because his results in his return didn't match what he had done before he left for NASCAR.

“I think it’s probably been a massive shock for him to come back and see where he’s running,” the Walkinshaw racer said.

“The last time he was in the sport he was dominating and running right up the front all the time, and if he did have a bad qualifying he’d be back up the front after the first couple of laps.

“[At the] Grand Prix he stuck it on pole his first time there – so to come back and probably not be as competitive at the grand prix as he was in his first round has probably thrown him out a bit and [he’s thought], ‘this is really hard’.”

“You can’t be giving anything away at the moment, you need that bond with your engineer, you need a great car, you need more than one car in a team, you need the data to get from that other car.”

Mourinho’s son blasts Chelsea fans

Jose Mourinho's son has labelled Chelsea fans a "disgrace" and the "worst (he's) ever seen" after they booed Cesc Fabregas in the draw with Southampton.

Jose Mourinho’s son has labelled Chelsea fans a ‘disgrace’ and the ‘worst (he’s) ever seen’ after they booed Cesc Fabregas in Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Southampton.

The Spanish midfielder had a brilliant first half of the season, providing 13 assists, but has not scored or set up a goal in his last 10 games in all competitions.

Jose Mario, 15 (below), a goalkeeper at Fulham, wrote on Instagram: ‘Why is everyone hating and blaming Fabregas for Sunday’s performance...it was a team effort.

‘Fabregas might have not played as well as most expected but at least he kept fighting, showed a lot of character.

‘I’ve seen bad Chelsea fans but Sunday was the worst I’ve ever seen. Fans booing Cesc, not singing at all. I completely agree with the chant “Mourinho’s right, your fans are s****.”

‘Our fans are a disgrace!!!!’

Later, in response to comments left by Instagram users, Jose Mario also wrote: ‘I’ll show the fans some respect when the fans respect the team.’

He also defended other Chelsea players in a separate post, which could potentially embarrass his father. ‘That’s why every single staff of Chelsea hate Chelsea fans!!’ he claimed.

‘Oscar has created a lot of our chances. Willian and (Branislav) Ivanovic are probably the players who track back the most. Ivanovic has saved us this season, scored so many goals and helped beat Liverpool with their s****y youngsters. You need to remember who you talk to and realise I know a lot more than you.’

He added: ‘If fans kept supporting Fabregas he could change his mindset, booing him won’t make him better at all.’

Jose Mario has since deleted his Instagram account while Chelsea refused to comment. – Daily Mail

Can Birds add to Chiefs’ woes?

How Fani Madida must wish his team can replicate the form they did when he first took over at Moroka Swallows.

|||

How Fani Madida must wish his team can replicate the form they did when he first took over at Moroka Swallows.

Madida and his struggling Birds host Amakhosi tomorrow night in a literal six-pointer that pits top versus bottom at Dobsonville Stadium.

In his first match in charge of Swallows, Madida took on the side he served with distinction as a player and succeeded where no club had hitherto done – becoming the first team to get a point off Chiefs.

Another draw similar to that one they achieved via a Lucky Baloyi goal will be mighty precious for Swallows as they look to steer clear of the relegation zone where they are a mere five points better than bottom-placed AmaZulu.

But the Birds are struggling to take flight and you are likely to find any takers for a bet on a home victory tomorrow, Chiefs’ poor form lately notwithstanding.

When they registered their first win of the year with that 2-1 defeat of Free State Stars last Wednesday, hope sprang eternal among the Dube Birds faithful. And with fellow relegation-haunted side Black Aces providing the next opposition, many anticipated a further three points to be added to their kitty.

But Swallows came unstuck out in Mbombela at the weekend to be mired in 15th spot in the 16-team league.

They host a Chiefs side who are finding scoring very difficult lately, Amakhosi go into tomorrow night’s clash on the back of two successive defeats – to Maritzburg United in the league and Raja Casa-blanca in the Caf Champions League.

Having held Chiefs when they were at their scintillating best early in the season, Madida and his troops should fancy their chances of putting one over a wobbly Amakhosi.

But to do that, the likes of Lerato Chabangu and Vuyisile Wana will need to bring along their scoring boots.

Chiefs will not want their once seemingly unassailable lead at the top to dwindle any further than the eight points it has been reduced to.

Stuart Baxter is sure to have a plan to ensure his team find the goals that will see them grab maximum points from this clash.

Failure to do so and Pitso Mosimane’s Mamelodi Sundowns will gladly edge much closer to pulling another snatch-and-grab like they did last season when they came from behind to win the championship from underneath Chiefs’ nose.

The Brazilians, unlike Chiefs, have had a highly successful week in which they hammered Polokwane City on the local front and beat TP Mazembe on the continental stage.

They host a Chippa United side fast being dragged into the danger zone courtesy of their failure to win in the league since November.

Also in action tomorrow will be Orlando Pirates who are dark horses for the championship. The Buccaneers are on a fantastic unbeaten run that has seen them move up the table to suddenly emerge as potential challengers.

They too had a fabulous week with wins over Chippa and Uganda Revenue Authority and will look to continue in this vein when Aces come to visit. All matches start at 7.30pm. - The Star

Beckham’s bank balance balloons

Retirement is proving to be far more lucrative for David Beckham than his glory days on the soccer field.

|||

London - He was the best-paid footballer of his time - but it turns out that retirement is far more lucrative for David Beckham than his glory days on the pitch.

The former England captain, 39, made £50.5 million last year, despite having hung up his football boots in 2013.

US magazine Forbes puts him second in a list of the highest-earning retired athletes after basketball star Michael Jordan, 52, who took £67 million in 2014.

After Beckham ended his 20-year football career, his earnings were “supercharged” by two deals that netted him more than £13.5 million last year.

One was with drinks giant Diageo to launch Haig Club whisky. The other was with the Global Brands Group in Hong Kong to create his own branded products such as clothes and luxury goods.

Forbes said: “The deals also have significant potential thanks to Beckham’s ownership stake in the ventures.

“Beckham remains one of the top product pitchmen in sports, with a dozen deals to his name, including four in China.”

Other endorsements include Adidas, Sky Sports, Breitling watches and Samsung.

He also has a partnership with the cosmetics firm Coty, which sells Beckham-branded fragrances such as Instinct worth more than £67 million a year.

Forbes said the contract, which runs into 2017, makes an estimated £4 million annually for Beckham. It added: “Beckham partnered with Swedish retailer H&M in 2012 for a line of bodywear. The venture expanded with swimwear in 2014. A new line of menswear this year will expand product offerings, as well as Beckham’s take. Doing business with Brand Beckham tends to be good business for everyone involved.”

Marc Ganis, of the Sportscorp consultancy, said Beckham and Michael Jordan had “created brands for themselves before people focused on brands”.

Hart set for Suarez, Barca onslaught

Joe Hart is probably sick of the sight of Barcelona striker Luis Suarez and the Manchester City goalkeeper will need to improve his record against the Uruguayan.

|||

Madrid - Joe Hart is probably sick of the sight of Barcelona striker Luis Suarez and the Manchester City goalkeeper will need to improve his record against the Uruguayan if the English champions are to have any hope of reaching the Champions League quarter-finals.

Barca lead 2-1 from last month's first leg ahead of the showdown at the Nou Camp on Wednesday, when Suarez netted both goals, more evidence he is nearing top form after a stuttering start to his stint in Spain.

The former Liverpool forward, who has scored 10 times since the turn of the year, also put two past Hart when Uruguay beat England 2-1 in Sao Paulo in June at the World Cup finals.

The 28-year-old was banned for four months for biting an opponent in Uruguay's subsequent game against Italy but since making his Barca debut at the end of October has slowly been getting back to his lethal best.

Linking up well with fellow South American forwards Lionel Messi and Neymar, Suarez has earned praise from Barca coach Luis Enrique for his work rate and it will be a huge challenge for city to thwart the fearsome trio on Wednesday.

Scoring goals has been City's main failure in recent weeks, however, and Saturday's 1-0 Premier League defeat at Burnley was their third reverse in four outings, during which they have managed to find the net only four times.

It is a paltry return by City's standards, especially considering they rattled in nine goals in their previous two games in England's top flight.

“The issue for us at present is that we are not winning the games that we normally do, especially against teams we are expected to beat, and that is because we are not scoring goals,” City coach Manuel Pellegrini said.

“I'm sure all our players are giving all that they can at this moment but we have to keep trusting in what we are trying to do and believe our performances will return to our normal levels,” added the Chilean.

Four-time European champions Barca are seeking a record eighth consecutive quarter-final appearance and have history on their side.

They have progressed 33 out of the 35 times they won the first leg away in European competition, most recently against City at the same stage last season when the English club were appearing in the round of 16 for the first time.

And only twice in the Champions League era has a team won a knockout round tie after losing the first leg at home. – Reuters
