News sport : Arizona State signee Davon Durant arrested on aggravated assault charges

Davon Durant (Rivals) One of Arizona State’s highest-ranked signees has been suspended indefinitely after being arrested for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend.

Davon Durant, a four-star inside linebacker from Butler County Community College in Kansas, was arrested March 7 when witnesses claimed they saw a man striking a woman while the two were sitting in a black SUV.

According to the police report, which was obtained by azcentral.com, Durant's girlfriend told police that Durant hit her in the face once and grabbed her around the neck. Durant told police he got into a verbal altercation with his girlfriend.

The responding officer did notice injuries to the alleged victim, including a bruise below her left eye and bruising around her neck, which appeared to be finger marks.

Durant is due in court for a preliminary hearing on March 18 for charges of disorderly conduct and aggravated assault.

Durant, who enrolled early to participate in spring drills, is no longer listed on the spring roster.

News sport : Manu Ginobili T's up ref whose pass hit him in face, later sprains ankle

You know, you'd think referees would show a little more respect to a 13-year veteran who's inarguably one of the greatest and most decorated international basketball players ever, but apparently not. During the San Antonio Spurs' 123-97 blowout of the cellar-dwelling Minnesota Timberwolves on Sunday, Manu Ginobili fell victim to an unwelcome false start as he was preparing to shoot a free throw:

[DraftKings: FREE entry to huge cash Fantasy Basketball Contest with first deposit]

Cue the Dangerfield.

Boy, do I love Manu's deadpan reaction to the boink and quick thinking to assess the referee a technical foul on the play. Frankly, I think a flagrant-2 might've been in order; sure seemed like unnecessary and excessive contact to me.

Unfortunately, Ginobili's pain would go from slapstick to serious in the third quarter:

With San Antonio holding a 30-point lead over a shorthanded Timberwolves club that had only eight players available on Sunday, the Argentine leapt for a rebound and landed on Minnesota big man Gorgui Dieng's foot, rolling his right ankle awkwardly. Ginobili instantly hit the ground, holding onto his ankle, and had to be helped to the locker room by teammate Tim Duncan and Spurs athletic trainer Will Sevening.

Ginobili was ruled out for the remainder of the game and later diagnosed with a sprained right ankle that Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said would keep the versatile guard sidelined for "a good week to 10 days. He's already officially been ruled out of the Spurs' Tuesday meeting with the New York Knicks.

It was a bummer of an ending to what had been a strong outing for Ginobili, who'd scored 11 points on 4-for-5 shooting to go with three rebounds, two assists and a monster at-the-rim block to erase a Kevin Martin layup in just 19 minutes of work before succumbing to the ankle injury. But considering how grim things looked as Ginobili laid on the hardwood and hopped to the back, it wasn't nearly as bad a diagnosis as his teammates feared.

"Fortunately, it's not as bad as they thought," said Duncan, who had 10 points, six rebounds, six assists, three blocks and a steal in the rout, according to The Associated Press. "Hopefully he can be back pretty quickly. We need what he brings to our game."

"We were just hoping it wasn't major, making sure it wasn't an Achilles [tendon injury]," said shooting guard Danny Green, who added 13 points, two assists, a steal and a 3-for-5 mark from 3-point land, according to Jeff McDonald of the San Antonio Express-News. "You look at the replay and see it's his ankle. Still not great, but it's a lot better than it could have been."

San Antonio has regained its footing since a post-All-Star-break losing streak, winning seven of its last eight games — with the lone loss owed in large part to Kyrie Irving becoming engulfed in flames last Thursday night — to slide into the No. 5 spot in the Western Conference playoff standings, percentage points ahead of the Los Angeles Clippers and Dallas Mavericks. But just as quickly as the Spurs rose up the rankings, they could slide; San Antonio will face the defensively stout Milwaukee Bucks, resurgent Boston Celtics, East-leading Atlanta Hawks and rival Mavericks over the next week, all likely without Ginobili's services.

[Follow Dunks Don't Lie on Tumblr: The best slams from all of basketball]

It's just as possible, of course, that the Spurs continue to soar, led by a healthy Kawhi Leonard and Tony Parker, who have looked pretty great over the past few weeks. Even if they do, though, this late-season bump in the road could only make it harder for Ginobili to find steady footing during what's been a somewhat disappointing season. The 37-year-old has seemed to alternate strong outings with ineffective ones of late, and has seen his per-minute scoring, True Shooting Percentage and Player Efficiency Rating dip to their lowest marks since his second season, all while turning the ball over at a career-high rate.

Ginobili's creativity, daring and experience will all be critical as the Spurs look to make their third straight trip to the NBA Finals and repeat as champions for the first time in the illustrious Duncan-Popovich era. It'll be even harder for him to get back to top form if he's carrying a balky wheel into the postseason, which is why it wouldn't be too big a surprise to his siesta skew toward the far end of Pop's prognosis ... and if that gives him a bit more time to heal his ref-wounded beak, too, then so much the better.

Hat-tip to Caleb Saenz.

News sport : Former 49ers DL Ray McDonald to sue woman who accused him of rape

San Francisco 49ers defensive tackle Ray McDonald (91) sits on the bench during the fourth quarter of an NFL football game against the Washington Redskins in Santa Clara, Calif., Sunday, Nov. 23, 2014. (AP Photo/Tony Avelar) Former 49ers defensive lineman Ray McDonald wants to clear his name.

McDonald, now a free agent, was cut by the 49ers due to “a pattern of poor decision-making” after he was accused of rape in December. The accusation came three months after McDonald was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence against his pregnant fiancée.

No charges have emerged in either case (his fiancée refused to cooperate with investigators) and now McDonald, according to the San Jose Mercury News, is suing the woman who accused him of rape, “claiming she defamed him and intentionally interfered with his livelihood.”

The lawsuit was filed Monday morning and McDonald’s attorney Steve M. DeFilippis said in a news release that he “expects prosecutors to eventually announce they are not pressing charges.” Until prosecutors do so, DeFilippis says McDonald will not be able to play professional football this year.

"In the eyes of the NFL teams, the unresolved threat of charges being filed against him, even though factually unfounded, continues to present a roadblock to this remarkable athlete being able to move forward in his career," the release says. "This lawsuit is intended to vindicate him ... and return his good name."

According to DeFilippis, video surveillance in McDonald’s home shows the woman and McDonald having “clearly consensual” sex in his hot tub. Additionally, the Mercury News is reporting that “sources close to the investigation” have told the paper that “McDonald will not face charges.”

According to a court affidavit, the woman told police that the alleged assault took place after “she fell and hit her head on the ground near the pool at (McDonald’s) house.”

The woman told police the alleged attack occurred after she fell and hit her head on the ground near the pool at his house, leaving her with no memory of the rest of the evening, according to a search warrant affidavit. She contends she woke up the next morning naked in bed with McDonald at his Silver Creek home, and McDonald initially told her he let her sleep in his bed because she was tired. But she said she kept asking him what happened, and the former defensive lineman eventually told her they had sex.

McDonald’s lawsuit tells a different version. From the Mercury News:

“It claims the woman is lying to cover up that she had sex "several times" with McDonald, whom she had just met at the Willow Den bar in Willow Glen. It also contends the woman is seeking to exploit a national wave of similar incidents involving NFL players.”

“In the lawsuit, however, McDonald claims the woman was alert at all times and had no difficulty remembering the next day what had occurred that night. He noted, as does the affidavit, that she went to the store with him the next day to get more alcohol. McDonald also claims she had sex with him "several times" more that day, which was captured on his home video security system. Yet the woman refused to tell police whether or not they had sex that day, according to the lawsuit.”

“The lawsuit also claims that he left her alone at his house at one point, prompting her to call him several times. Those calls occurred in the presence of several witnesses, and "at no time" during the conversations did she seem upset, scared or accuse McDonald of any wrongdoing.”

McDonald was picked in the third round of the 2007 draft by the 49ers and played in 210 games – including 153 starts – for the franchise before being released. Overall, McDonald registered 153 total tackles and 19.5 sacks.

News sport : Steve Kerr emailed angry ticket holders who were upset that he sat his Warrior stars

The NBA is a global league, we’re an upwardly mobile society, and people sure do love to watch sports in person. This is why the NBA won’t be cutting out the 82-game season any time soon, as it still wants the Utah Jazz to visit Boston once per season, and this is why the a la carte version of NBA League Pass should be coming down the pike sooner rather than later: New York Knicks fans working in Olympia, WA still want to watch their team tip off at 4:30 local time.

[DraftKings: FREE entry to huge cash Fantasy Basketball Contest with first deposit]

This is also why the habit of sitting stars due to rest or nagging injury is a tough sell to many fans. It’s one thing to disappoint a home crowd full of regulars, but it’s something else entirely to disappoint fans that travel great distances to the home arena of a team that is opposing the crew of stars you decided bench, Mr. Sensible Coach.

This is where Steve Kerr, a great and sensible coach, failed fans of the Splash Brothers on Friday. Kerr rested three starters and supersub Andre Iguodala on Friday in a road game against the Denver Nuggets in order to give them some needed rest. Via CBS Sports, this didn’t sit well with those that spent a significant chunk of change just to see Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson do their thing in person:

Sigh. That is an appropriate response. Stephen Curry, the Warriors’ MVP candidate, is the favorite player of quite a few people; people that don’t always live in the Bay Area. This particular fan (and son) live in Denver; but NBA outposts in Denver, Salt Lake City, Memphis and Minneapolis often serve as a fan’s particular Last Chance Diner due to their proximity to NBA-less regions. It’s more than possible that some fans from northeast Nebraska may have trekked over a state and a half in order to buy tickets to see the guy that dropped 37 points in one quarter.

Kerr likely knew this heading into Friday evening, prior to doing what was best for his team. He followed up the night by doing what was best for his soul, in a way, by emailing several fans that had gotten in touch with Kerr to express their disappointment after paying to watch 35 minutes of Justin Holiday.

From the Canadian Press:

"There's two really good sides to the story," Kerr said. "Nobody's wrong here. ... I can't argue with them."

One of the emails Kerr received was from a family that drove from South Dakota to the Mile High City with high hopes of seeing All-Stars Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson lead the Western Conference's top team. Instead, those two rested along with centre Andrew Bogut and Andre Iguodala.

[…]

"I heard from some fans. I received a few emails, stories about driving in from a long distance off and spending a lot of money on tickets," Kerr said. "I have great sympathy for those people. I really do. It's a tricky one. It's something that I think Adam Silver is trying to address through the scheduling shuffling that he's talking about.

"Its' real important, because our fans deserve to see the best product out there. If somebody spends a lot of money, they deserve to see the best players, the guy that they came to see. On the other hand, as coaches we have to do what's best to prepare our teams for a really long year."

You’ll recall Kerr’s spot-on reason for sitting his stars from Friday:

“They've been going full bore since July," coach Steve Kerr said of resting Curry and Thompson, referring to their time spent winning the FIBA World Cup.

"They're fried right now, so that's the reason.”

Kerr referenced utilizing SportVU cameras to diagnose his weary team’s problem, pointing out that Curry, Iguodala and Thompson had run an incredibly amount of miles since the season started (Andrew Bogut is just perpetually beat to hell as he acts as the linchpin of the NBA’s best defense), and that the rest solution didn’t just come because of what Kerr referred to as “the eye test.”

Outside of good sense and tact from both sides, there aren’t really a whole lot of obvious solutions to this problem.

Fans overwhelmingly want the best players representing their country, which means stars are going to be asked to train in July and play in August and September every couple of summers when FIBA or the Olympics comes calling. Fans want entertainment in fall and winter, and they love the playoffs in spring and summer. They’re going to want Steph Curry, or Kevin Durant, or LeBron James or any number of stars to be at their best in mid-June when the games matter the most.

[Follow Dunks Don't Lie on Tumblr: The best slams from all of basketball]

Displaced fans are also going to take advantage of that one time a year when their favorite team jets over three time zones in order to play in their adopted hometown. And even though the Warriors and Nuggets share a conference, Friday marked the only time this season that Golden State would be performing in Denver. It’s not as if those Stephen Curry fans had the option to pick a game earlier in the season. Hell, Gregg Popovich doesn’t even wait until the end of the season to rest his guys on the road.

The NBA has to uphold that 82-game tradition in order to suit all kinds, and it also has to keep it up in order to make a ton of money. What it also needs to do is to extend the season by a week in October and a week in June in order to eliminate back-to-back games and four-games-in-five-night schedules.

That doesn’t completely address the reasons Steve Kerr had in place for resting his players on Friday, in spite of the fact that the Warriors were setting up for the first game of a back-to-back.

The league is evolving into a fluid, five-man setup that features performers of ever-increasing athletic ability moving far more often. We’re past the slowed down and strong-side heavy play of the mid-1990s, or the two-man pick-and-roll nonsense that doomed the fin de siècle. There’s a lot of running going on, even in what used to be staid half-court sets.

We’re getting what we asked for, and what we’re asking for is going to tire players. Outside of working on the schedule, being nice in an email reply, and enjoying Steph Curry’s highlights from the next night, there isn’t a whole lot smart NBA teams can do about this at the current stage.

Spurs win timely boost for United

Man United’s win against Spurs is a boost ahead of a difficult run of games against Liverpool, Chelsea and Man City.

|||

London - For 45 minutes at Old Trafford on Sunday it was just like old times as Manchester United blew Tottenham Hotspur away with three goals in a ruthless display of attacking football.

For the first time under coach Louis van Gaal, United achieved what they used to do routinely under Alex Ferguson, strangling a shell-shocked Spurs side and clinically killing them off before easing through the gears to a 3-0 victory.

Van Gaal has been criticised for overseeing laboured performances this season, often grinding out results with negative tactics at odds with the attacking traditions of the club.

But, finally, against a Spurs side with their own ambitions of a top-four finish in the Premier League, United broke free of the shackles.

“We have waited a long time for such a victory and it was better because the performance was good against a very good team,” Van Gaal told reporters.

United's season looked in danger of imploding after their 2-1 home defeat by Arsenal in the FA Cup quarter-finals last week but they responded very positively to consolidate their place in the top four.

“I was very pleased but I'm not sure if it was our best. You have to watch it again on video but we played like a team, very determined after a defeat like we had against Arsenal, that we lost because of ourselves,” Van Gaal said.

Without the suspended Angel Di Maria, Van Gaal opted to play Marouane Fellaini behind striker Wayne Rooney with Michael Carrick and Ander Herrera anchoring the midfield and Juan Mata restored to the starting line-up.

Carrick released Fellaini to score the first goal and headed the second himself before Rooney took advantage of woeful Spurs defending to burst through the middle and slot home the third.

Mata buzzed around to good effect on the right, Ashley Young and Daley Blind provided width on the left and United's dominance provided a platform for Chris Smalling and Phil Jones to enjoy solid games at the heart of the defence.

“To do that in a massively important game against a competitor after such a defeat means I'm very pleased with the players,” Van Gaal said. “Maybe it is the game that gives us a fantastic boost.”

It was a timely performance given that United next travel to arch-rivals Liverpool before games against Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal in a difficult run-in.

But if they continue to play the high-tempo inventive football which characterised all Ferguson's successful sides the Old Trafford faithful will be delighted and Van Gaal's doubters will be silenced. – Reuters

News sport : Comedian John Oliver blasts March Madness and the NCAA (Video)

March Madness is upon us, which means that NCAA is ripe for criticism and comedian and talk show host John Oliver fired the first shot.

On Sunday, Oliver, who hosts HBO’s "Last Week Tonight" had a 21-minute rant about the NCAA, March Madness and the lack of adequate compensation for student-athletes.

In typical Oliver fashion, he broke down the financial discrepancies between what an event like March Madness brings in versus the incomes of the student-athletes that make it possible in a logical, humorous and damning way.

Oliver’s rant, while highly entertaining, is not a new take. He’s just the latest to step on the soapbox at a time when the NCAA is in the spotlight.

Oliver uses clips from college basketball greats Ed O’Bannon and Jalen Rose to emphasize his point by highlighting the various avenues in which coaches and institutions profit off the hard work of its athletes while declaring them students and not employees.

There’s also a bittersweet homage to the EA Sports video game franchise. Oliver creates “March Sadness 2015,” which declares itself “the most authentic college basketball game of all time.”

The game shows college players being yelled at by “a middle-aged millionaire” and losing scholarships to season-ending injuries, free lunches and autographs.

Oliver does his best to drive his point in a humorous way that even features a quip from O’Bannon.

In the end, Oliver said he’s just looking for student-athletes to be treated fairly.

“No one is saying that they need to be paid millions or hundreds of thousands, or the same amount, or even that every school needs to pay every athlete, but to pay everyone zero when the kid selling their jersey at the campus bookstore gets $10 an hour seems a little bit strange,” Oliver said. “And if it truly is all about the romance of amateurism, that’s fine. Give up the sponsorships and the TV deals, stop paying the coaches and have teams run by an asthmatic anthropology professor with a whistle. But if you’re going to change nothing, at least be honest about the business you’re engaged in.”

It is important to note that beginning with the 2015-16 school year, athletes will be given cost-of-attendance scholarships, which will cover miscellaneous expenses that go beyond the standard tuition, books, room and board. The amount per student-athlete will vary by school, but it will be more than they have been getting.

So while humorous, Oliver’s rant is a little outdated but still has its merits. And hey, it’s March Madness, so why not profit with ratings during the NCAA's most popular month? Turnabout is fair play, right?

News sport : Comedian John Oliver calls out Clemson’s Dabo Swinney's during NCAA rant

If you’ve seen the hashtag “#soybeanwind” floating around social media in the past 24 hours, you can thank comedian and talk show host John Oliver.

Oliver, who hosts HBO’s "Last Week Tonight" had a 21-minute rant about the NCAA and during it, he cited Clemson coach Dabo Swinney and comments he made last June about paying student-athletes (start at the 14:07 mark).

“As far as paying players, professionalizing college athletics, that’s where you lose me,” Swinney said. “I’ll go do something else because there’s enough entitlement in this world as there is.”

Here’s what Oliver had to say about Swinney’s comments:

“If you find that infuriating, you might like to know that Dabo Swinney is an anagram for Soybean Wind, which I think is fitting because he seems as pleasant as an edamame fart. And the fact that his name is an anagram for Soybean Wind is not relevant to this discussion, but I felt it was worth mentioning because it feels like something he’d be annoyed by and would not want people to know on a wide basis, hashtag soybean wind.”

“The larger point is, Swinney has trademarked his name for use on shirts because he’s allowed to do that. The NCAA manual explicitly states coaches are free to pursue endorsements or consultation contracts and players are acutely aware of this discrepancy.”

The video then shifts to a rant by former Michigan basketball player Jalen Rose, who notes that coaches have five different revenue streams thanks to endorsement deals and radio show contracts. Meanwhile, student athletes, such as himself, were wondering how they were going to help their mothers keep their lights on.

Of course, Swinney’s new nickname took off on social media and was trending at one point late Sunday evening. Some enterprising Internet troll even changed Swinney’s Wikipedia page to reflect the nickname.

Chances are Swinney didn’t even know about his viral fame until Monday morning, long after the damage had been done. Swinney isn’t the first coach to speak out against paying student-athletes, but he is the only coach with a name that makes a terrific anagram.

To be clear, the NCAA did allow universities to issue cost-of-attendance scholarships beginning with the 2015-16 school year. While it might not be the millions Oliver wants student-athletes to get, it is at least something more than they were getting.

Confident Arsenal ready for Monaco

Arsenal were gutted after losing 3-1 to Monaco, but the Londoners are confident they can overturn their Champions League deficit.

|||

Paris - Arsenal were on the floor after losing 3-1 to Monaco last month but the Londoners have rebuilt confidence enough to believe they can overturn their Champions League deficit in Tuesday's return match.

Since being beaten in the last-16 first leg at The Emirates, the Gunners have bounced back by knocking Manchester United out of the FA Cup and by overcoming West Ham United, Queens Park Rangers and Everton in the Premier League.

“I think we have pulled ourselves together,” midfielder Francis Coquelin told the club's website (www.arsenal.com). “There are quite a lot of things to change after you lose 3-1 at home but we've done that in recent games.

“We haven't conceded many goals and we've been scoring goals as well. We haven't lost a game since Monaco and confidence is high.”

France striker Olivier Giroud, who had a terrible game in the first leg, also seems to be back to his best and scored the opening goal in Saturday's 3-0 win over West Ham.

“(Responding) is one of his strengths. This is a boy who played at the age of 22 or 23 in division three,” said manager Arsene Wenger of Giroud's spell with the Tours club.

“He's come out and become an international footballer. You need some mental strength to do that.”

Wenger is likely to start Santi Cazorla and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in midfield after they were rested on Saturday.

Like Arsenal, Monaco's self-belief is also high after they brushed Bastia aside 3-0 in Ligue 1 on Friday thanks to an Anthony Martial double.

Martial started after coach Leonardo Jardim rested Dimitar Berbatov and the 19-year-old forward produced a sterling performance as Monaco remained fourth in the table.

Only once this season have the principality club conceded three goals or more, a 4-1 defeat at Girondins de Bordeaux in August.

“The ingredients we need to qualify? We'll need to make sure we don't concede or concede as few as possible, keep calm whatever happens...and take our chances,” said defender Wallace.

“A draw would be a great result for us thanks to our good win in the first leg.” – Reuters

News sport : Marcus Mariota visits with Bucs on Monday morning

Maybe former Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston being picked by the Bucs at No. 1 in the 2015 draft isn’t such a lock after all.

Much like Winston a few weeks ago, the Bucs are hosting Oregon’s Marcus Mariota for a visit at their facility on Monday morning, the team confirmed on its website.

If Mariota’s visit mimics Winston’s, the 2014 Heisman Trophy winner is likely to sit down with many, if not all, of the team’s top executives. According to the Tampa Bay Times, Bucs general manager Jason Licht, director of player personnel Jon Robinson and quarterbacks coach Mike Bajakian all attended Mariota’s pro day workout in Oregon last Thursday.

After seeing him throw at his pro day and the NFL combine, the team is certainly familiar with his physical capabilities. Now, during he’ll get the chance to make a further impression on the team’s brass during his visit in efforts to convince the team that he should be the No. 1 pick.

Mariota, who threw for 105 touchdowns and just 14 interceptions in three seasons as Oregon's starter, received high marks at the combine, but many were underwhelmed with his performance at Oregon’s pro day. Mariota himself admitted that the workout was just “okay.”

“I thought it went okay. There were some misthrows here and there,” Mariota said following the workout. “I think it’s a little different than a game. To have the entire focus be on you, especially for me, it’s a little different. I think coming out, I think there were a little bit of butterflies, but that’s okay, that’s natural.”

The Bucs have the No. 1 pick for the first time since 1987 and upgrading at the quarterback position appears to be the team’s priority after last year’s disastrous 2-14 campaign. Winston is widely viewed as the better and more pro-ready prospect of the two. Still, the Bucs will do their due diligence to ensure they make the right choice.
