Zlatan rant to be investigated

Paris St Germain striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic's expletive-laden rant decrying refereeing standards in French soccer will be investigated.

|||

Paris - Paris St Germain striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic's expletive-laden rant decrying refereeing standards in French soccer will be investigated later this week.

The Professional Football League (LFP), the governing body of French club football, issued a statement on Monday saying the matter will be taken up by its disciplinary committee on March 19.

Following PSG's 3-2 Ligue 1 defeat by Girondins Bordeaux on Sunday, Ibrahimovic said: “In 15 years I've never seen a (good) referee in this s**t country ... (they) don't even deserve PSG.”

The Swedish international has since apologised for remarks he was heard saying in Canal Plus TV footage, comments that prompted French sports minister Patrick Kanner to call on him to say sorry.

Ibrahimovic scored twice in Sunday's defeat, which left PSG in second place, four days after he was sent off as PSG knocked Chelsea out in the last 16 of the Champions League.

PSG drew 2-2 after extra-time at Stamford Bridge to advance to the quarter-finals on away goals after the tie ended 3-3 on aggregate.

Ibrahimovic is not the first big-name player to speak unflatteringly about France recently. Bayern Munich's France winger Franck Ribery told Germany's Bild-Zeitung last month he could consider taking German citizenship and staying in Germany after his playing career. – Reuters

Chelsea doing it the hard way

If Chelsea are going to win the Premier League it looks like they will stumble hesitantly across the finish line.

|||

London - If Chelsea are going to win the Premier League it looks like they will stumble hesitantly across the finish line rather than stride majestically through the tape like an all-conquering Olympic champion.

Sunday's frustrating 1-1 stalemate with Southampton at Stamford Bridge was their third successive home draw in all competitions and served to highlight all-too-apparent deficiencies in Jose Mourinho's team.

Too many players seemed tired and listless and Chelsea again appeared over-reliant on Eden Hazard's lightning pace and tricky ball skills to drag them out of a hole.

The Londoners may be six points clear at the top of the table, with a game in hand on their rivals, but the dynamic tiki-taka football that was on view at the start of the season is now a distant memory.

Do not fall into the trap of believing the destiny of the championship is assured because not only are Chelsea struggling for form, they also have three dangerous fixtures still to negotiate against Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United.

Even Mourinho acknowledged that it is no longer a two-horse race for the league crown.

“There is a danger of more teams being in the title race,” the Portuguese told reporters after the Southampton game.

“Of course Arsenal are still in the race, seven points behind. We are not complacent, that is something I cannot accuse my players of.

“The danger is always there ... but if someone had told me in August that in March we would be six points in front with a match in hand, I would have signed for that immediately.”

That may be the case but Chelsea were unable to take maximum advantage of second-placed Manchester City's shock 1-0 defeat at lowly Burnley on Saturday and were lucky to go into the break on level terms against a Sadio Mane-inspired Southampton.

Spain midfielder Cesc Fabregas looked more like a pedestrian Sunday morning park player than a World Cup and European Championship winner as he frittered away possession time and time again in the first half.

Brazilians Oscar and Willian flattered to deceive behind Diego Costa in attack and even the normally rock-solid Nemanja Matic was withdrawn in the second period.

To be fair to Chelsea they were much better after the break and Fraser Forster had to be at his best in the Southampton goal to keep them out.

Then when Mourinho made a late change by bringing on Juan Cuadrado, the club's new Colombian signing from Fiorentina caused raised eyebrows among the fans as he resembled a fish out of water on the right wing.

Hazard, as usual, was a constant threat but the Belgium playmaker is beginning to feel the effects of a long and draining season.

Unlike Oscar and Willian, the other two players who occupy the three creative roles behind striker Costa, the 24-year-old Hazard is so important to Chelsea that he is rarely rested for games and not often substituted during matches.

With 10 games, almost a quarter of the season, left to play Chelsea's title run-in could depend on their trip to third-placed Arsenal on April 26 and the home fixtures with fourth-placed United on April 18 and fifth-placed Liverpool on May 9.

Mourinho's men looked invincible at Stamford Bridge at the start of the season, powering their way to 10 successive home league victories.

However, a run of four draws in the last five home games in all competitions suggest that visiting teams have worked out a way to silence their biggest weapons. – Reuters

Maritzburg coach relieved after win

Maritzburg United coach Steve Komphela breathed a sigh of relief after his side scored in the closing stages to bag a 2-1 win over Platinum Stars.

|||

Johannesburg – Maritzburg United coach Steve Komphela breathed a sigh of relief, while his Platinum Stars counterpart Allan Freese was clearly frustrated after the visitors scored in the closing stages to bag a 2-1 win in Phokeng on Sunday.

While Maritzburg climbed into the top half of the Premiership table, Stars were left struggling in 13th place with eight games left in the campaign.

“It wasn't easy. They (Stars) also need to be given credit,” Komphela said.

“All in all it was not a walk in the park. We had to grind for this result.”

Shortly before the half-hour mark, Deolin Lekoa put the visiting side in front, finishing off some impressive team work by turning in the box and hitting the back of the net.

Making full use of a rare chance for the hosts, Ndumiso Mabena

sliced in a cross with a few minutes left in regulation time to bury the equaliser.

Mohau Mokate cancelled out the goal just three minutes later, however, tapping the ball in from close range.

“Unfortunately we went to sleep and they equalised,” Komphela said.

“I thought we could have done better, but the game of football is about concentration, and as soon as they got their goal they moved into acceptance mode, satisfied to take a point after going so long in the heat.

“We're happy but we'll try work even harder.”

Freese was furious with his defence for allowing the home side through after fighting back to equalise.

“Where's the professionalism?” Freese said.

“If you don't defend you will concede, and that's what happened.” – Sapa

Finally, United come alive

For the first time in a very long time, Manchester United looked like a top team when they dispatched Tottenham Hotspur.

|||

Louis van Gaal had suggested beforehand that a victory against what he described as a big team may be enough to turn Manchester United’s season.

As it turned out, this was a rather small-time performance from Tottenham but the manner in which United rolled them over suggested that Van Gaal’s team have an appetite for achievement this season after all.

This was the afternoon when the race for the final Champions League place may have been reduced from four runners to three — United, Liverpool and Southampton. Tottenham were pitiful.

As for United, who knows?

Here, against a team fancied by many, Van Gaal’s team found something of their true selves. They were quick, brave, incisive and merciless. For the first time in a very long time United looked like a top team.

Wayne Rooney started the day on the front pages and ended it, appropriately, on the back.

The scorer of a brutally taken third goal in a first half that United wrapped up and kept as their own, the United captain followed it with a celebration he must have choreographed as soon as the morning papers landed.

Rooney was brilliant and he will need to be between now and the season’s end. There were other bravura performances, too.

Marouane Fellaini scored United’s first goal in the ninth minute and contributed to a second, for Michael Carrick, in the 19th. The Belgian was excellent in his own peculiarly lumbering way, as were Juan Mata on the right and Ander Herrera in the No 10 position.

Yes, Tottenham were compliant but we should remember that United have laboured against poor opposition this season.

There was something different — something meaner and sharper — about this United performance and Van Gaal can only hope it can be bottled between now and next Sunday when his players disembark at Anfield.

Early on there were signs of nerves. Once goalkeeper David de Gea managed to divert Phil Jones’ panicked back pass in the second minute, however, they appeared to dissipate.

From the get-go, Mauricio Pochettino’s team struggled desperately down their own right side. On television, Gary Neville called it a ‘graveyard’ and Kyle Walker and Andros Townsend seemed to see only ghosts as Fellaini and Ashley Young eased forward down that side of the pitch.

The pattern was set early on and United scored when Fellaini galloped through a huge hole down the inside-left channel to collect Carrick’s pass and beat Hugo Lloris across his body with a left-foot shot.

Lloris may have done a little better but, with their nerves calmed and their tails up, United pressed on eagerly. The runs of Rooney off the shoulder of the two Tottenham central defenders gave the London club persistent trouble while the number of times players in white simply gave the ball away or were let down by poor control soon became too numerous to count.

Such was Tottenham’s disorganisation that United had several options whenever they moved forward. Van Gaal’s team continued to use Fellaini intelligently while Mata’s runs off the right touchline were also proving troublesome for Danny Rose.

The second goal, however, was rather basic.

A corner from the left was headed towards goal by Fellaini and when Rose hooked it clear, Carrick applied a firmly placed header from 18 yards that managed to beat both Lloris and Nacer Chadli, who had moved away from the far post.

With less than a quarter of the game gone, United were rampant. They have not been used to that here this season.

Playing with rare self-belief, they were able to move freely and with speed. It was, on occasion, reminiscent of United displays that we used to see at this great stadium.

Desperate to stem the tide of red possession, Pochettino made a change, withdrawing Townsend and sending on the more defensive Mousa Dembele. Changes in personnel don’t mean anything, though, if you continue to make mistakes and Nabil Bentaleb contributed the biggest one of all in presenting the ball straight to Rooney 10 minutes before half-time.

Rooney still had much to do but surged forward to hold off two players and beat Lloris with his left instep.

With the outcome of the game all but settled with almost an hour still to run, it was perhaps expecting a lot for United to keep such intensity.

As it was, they fell into something of a slumber for the next hour. Only the cruel would say that normal service was resumed.

Eventually, with just a minute to go, Tottenham mustered their only shot on target as Harry Kane was denied by De Gea at the near post.

Tottenham had begun and ended the game on the front foot. What passed between, though, was rather different.

This may well be the afternoon that finally, belatedly, signalled a real United push towards respectability and credibility. Sunday afternoon at Anfield will no doubt tell us more. – Daily Mail

Reds need 23 points for top four

Brendan Rodgers believes Liverpool will need another 23 points to reach the Champions League.

|||

Brendan Rodgers believes Liverpool will need another 23 points to reach the Champions League as he prepares to welcome back Steven Gerrard.

Liverpool’s influential captain is fit again after recovering from a hamstring problem he sustained on February 10 but there is no guarantee that Rodgers will put him straight back into the starting line-up.

During Gerrard’s absence Liverpool won three consecutive league games against Southampton, Manchester City and Burnley but Rodgers feels that it will be a pivotal week for the club with tonight’s trip to Swansea followed by Sunday’s clash with Manchester United.

‘We have 30 points to play for, so I am guessing it will be another 23 points,’ said Rodgers. ‘That is how competitive it has been this year. We have won nine out of 11 in January and February, it has been a great run but now we have to be aggressive in our game and nail it in the last 10.

‘Everyone is waiting to see if Stevie comes into the team but the most important thing is Steven is back fit.’

Swansea goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski admits Swansea want to make up for the night of misery at the end of December when they were swept aside 4-1 at Anfield. ‘This is a game you want to play in, a second chance and an opportunity to put that right,’ said Fabianski. ‘This is a good game to bounce back in.’ – Daily Mail

Title race maybe not a two-horse race

Following Chelsea’s draw against Southampton, Jose Mourinho has suggested that the Premier League title race may not be just between Chelsea and Manchester City.

|||

London - Chelsea's disappointing 1-1 home draw with Southampton could mean the Premier League title battle is no longer a two-horse race, according to manager Jose Mourinho.

It has appeared for months that the championship crown would go to leaders Chelsea or second-placed Manchester City but Mourinho believes it would be unwise to rule out teams like Arsenal and Manchester United.

“I agree that Chelsea not winning at home is not a good result but we had a five-point lead before the match and afterwards we have a six-point lead,” the Portuguese told reporters at Stamford Bridge.

“I'm happy with the situation and the six-point lead but not happy with the result. There is a danger of more teams being in the title race.”

Third-placed Arsenal are seven points off the pace while United, in fourth, trail by eight points although Chelsea have a game in hand on all three of their rivals.

Chelsea grabbed the lead with an early header from Diego Costa before Southampton deservedly equalised in the 19th minute thanks to a Dusan Tadic penalty.

The visitors gained in belief after drawing level and could easily have gone in front by halftime with the tricky Sadio Mane a constant threat.

Chelsea, though, were much improved after the break and only a string of fine saves by the excellent Fraser Forster kept them at bay.

“The result is positive rather than negative,” said Mourinho. “The performance until the penalty, the team was stable and was playing not amazingly well but with control.

“Towards the end of the first half we lost control.”

Mourinho said his decision to bring on Brazilian Ramires for Nemanja Matic early in the second half to shore up the midfield was vindicated.

“Ramires improved the team,” he added. “He gave complete stability and we had control over their counter attacks.

“After that they stayed back. We deserved to score. The team needed stability to perform again and Ramires brought that stability.

“We created lots of chances in the second half to win the game. We were unlucky we couldn't score.

“I didn't like the moments after the penalty, the remaining minutes of the first half. When you are winning 1-0 you are on top, then they get a penalty and the opponent gets confidence.” – Reuters

Bale silences critics with double

Real Madrid's Gareth Bale answered his critics in emphatic style when he ended a nine-game goal drought with a double in a 2-0 La Liga victory against Levante.

|||

Madrid - Real Madrid's Gareth Bale answered his critics in emphatic style when he ended a nine-game goal drought with a double for the European champions in a 2-0 La Liga victory against Levante at the Bernabeu on Sunday.

The world record signing, whistled by his own team's fans during Real's recent poor run, struck twice in the first half and came close to completing his hat-trick midway through the second period to leave Real a point behind leaders Barcelona.

They failed to add to their tally against the struggling Valencia-based side, however, and question marks remain over their form following a 4-3 reverse at home to Schalke 04 in their Champions League last 16, second leg in midweek.

Real, who still reached the quareter-finals on aggregate, head to Barca for next weekend's 'Clasico' at the Nou Camp in second place behind their arch rivals, who won 2-0 at Eibar on Saturday and lead on 65 points with 11 games left.

Valencia climbed to third on 57 points thanks to Friday's 2-0 win at home to Deportivo La Coruna, above champions Atletico Madrid, who were held 0-0 at Espanyol on Saturday and have 56.

Real coach Carlo Ancelotti made several changes to the team that lost to Schalke but squeaked into the last eight of Europe's elite club competition 5-4 over the two legs.

The Italian left Germany midfielder Toni Kroos on the bench and replaced keeper and captain Iker Casillas with Keylor Navas, while centre back Sergio Ramos returned from injury.

Clearly anxious to make amends for Tuesday's poor showing against the Germans, Real started strongly and Cristiano Ronaldo poked a close-range shot against a post in the fifth minute.

Bale seemed especially fired up and broke the deadlock in the 18th minute when he volleyed in after an acrobatic Ronaldo effort had been cleared off the line.

The Welshman placed his hands over his ears, perhaps a reference to his treatment from the home fans, and ran to the corner before angrily karate-kicking the flag.

Bale got a somewhat fortuitous second goal five minutes before halftime when he stuck out a leg and deflected Ronaldo's low shot into the corner.

Karim Benzema sent a spectacular volley against the corner of the goal frame in the 64th and Bale was brilliantly denied by Levante keeper Diego Marino in a one-on-one six minutes later.

Ronaldo, who had a frustrating night, stung Marino's hands with a fierce drive and volleyed wastefully over late on but Real were unable to breach Levante's defences again.

Sevilla strengthened their grip on fifth spot and closed within four points of Atletico when Carlos Bacca struck twice in a 3-0 win at home to Elche.

Colombia striker Bacca put the Europa League champions ahead from the penalty spot in the 18th minute at the Sanchez Pizjuan and made it 2-0 in the 31st when he nodded in a Coke cross.

Elche made a determined effort to get back into the game in the second half before substitute Kevin Gameiro completed a comfortable victory for the Andalusians nine minutes from time.

Gameiro ran on to an Ever Banega pass and finished clinically past goalkeeper Przemyslaw Tyton.

Sevilla are three points ahead of sixth-placed Villarreal, the team they host in a Europa League last 16 return match on Thursday holding a 3-1 lead from last week's first leg.

They also play at Villarreal, who were held to a 0-0 stalemate at Almeria earlier on Sunday, in La Liga in a week's time.

Seventh-placed Malaga boosted their chances of a Europa League berth next season as they moved within five points of Villarreal with a 2-0 win at home to Cordoba.

Cordoba are four points adrift at the bottom and appear doomed for relegation. – Reuters

News sport : DeMaurice Smith wins re-election as NFLPA chief

DeMaurice Smith earned another three-year tenure as executive director of the NFL players union after winning an election on Sunday night in Hawaii, where player representatives from 32 teams voted to keep him as their NFLPA chief.

The incumbent defeated a field that included an unprecedented eight other candidates, including former NFL players Sean Gilbert, Robert Griffith and Jason Belser.

Smith was re-elected on the first ballot. In his first run for the post (2009), he was voted in unanimously, and ran unopposed in 2012.

The challengers largely attacked Smith based on the collective bargaining agreement the NFLPA struck with team owners after the lockout in 2011, viewing the deal as lopsided financially in the owners' favor. Those misgivings weren't enough to unseat Smith from a third term running the union.

News sport : Christian Laettner live tweeting his 30 for 30 was almost as good as the show

You might hate Christian Laettner, especially if you're a Kentucky or North Carolina basketball fan, but you have to give the former Duke All-American this much: He couldn't have handled the debut of his "30 for 30" retrospective on ESPN much better.

"I Hate Christian Laettner" debuted Sunday night after the 2015 NCAA tournament bracket was announced and dissected and Laettner live tweeted throughout the show, interacting with fans, former players and folks who really do hate Christian Laettner. He approached with a sense of humor some might not have thought he possessed.

The background on his Twitter page features the hashtag #Hatersgonnahate and he used the show's title as a hastag throughout #IHateChristianLaettner

Laettner is the only player in NCAA history to start in four consecutive Final Fours. It is because of his amazing run of success at Duke in the early 1990s that so many college hoops fans grew to loathe him. But he did plenty to help bolster their fire, such as the time he purposely stepped on Kentucky's Aminu Timberlake.

Laettner recorded a video message to Timberlake and posted during the show.

News sport : Tony Stewart's horrible start continues after crashing at Phoenix

Kurt Busch made his first start of the season on Sunday at Phoenix International Raceway. He's three spots higher in the points standings than his Stewart-Haas Racing teammate Tony Stewart.

Yes, that's how poor the beginning of 2015 has been for the three-time champion. Already in the worst three-race stretch of his career entering Sunday's race (four if you count a last-place finish in the final race of 2014), Stewart extended the run of bad finishes to four with two separate crashes at Phoenix.

The first happened after he battled up to the top 10. After starting 17th, Stewart ran most of the first half of the race in the back-end of the top 20. But as his team kept adjusting on the car it kept getting better and Stewart moved into 10th place.

He was battling for the position with Justin Allgaier on lap 237 when he drifted up the track and into Allgaier. Stewart's car spun around and he slammed into the wall.

Stewart drove to the pits for repairs but lost numerous laps. After returning to the track, he blew a tire exiting turn four and slammed into the frontstretch wall, collecting Sam Hornish Jr. on lap 290.

After his car was towed to the garage, Stewart was officially out of the race. He finished 39th.

Busch finished fifth, collecting 39 points. After finishes of 42nd, 30th, 33rd and now 39th, Stewart has 32 points in 2015. Busch is 32nd in the points standings. Stewart is 36th.

In fact, Stewart has the fewest points of any driver who has competed in all four Sprint Cup Series races in 2015. Landon Cassill, the first driver to start the season with back-to-back last-place finishes since 1949 is running for Xfinity Series points this season. But if he was running for Sprint Cup points, he'd have 33 points, or one more than Stewart does.

Is all hope lost for 2015 already for Stewart? Of course not. Busch and race-winner Kevin Harvick showed that Stewart-Haas Racing has speed. And Stewart did have speed on Sunday before he lost the car underneath Allgaier, the second time he's had a car hit the wall in a similar scenario in 2015.

Because of the quality of equipment Stewart-Haas has, Stewart is a near-lock for the top 30 in the points standings. And he just needs a win to make the Chase. While it seems like a big "just," we're not ready to count Stewart out just yet.

But we didn't expect a start to 2015 like this either.

News sport : Kevin Harvick nabs 4th-straight win at Phoenix

Breaking news: Kevin Harvick is the master of the repaved Phoenix International Raceway.

Sunday, Harvick got his fourth-straight win at the track and his fifth in six races, dominating after he started first.

There was some late drama, as Harvick had to hold off Jamie McMurray on a restart with 12 laps to go after a caution precipitated by Danica Patrick's spin. But while McMurray nudged ahead of Harvick off turns one and two, he couldn't clear him.

The defending Sprint Cup Series champion was able to keep McMurray pinched down just enough to get a run heading into turn three and cleared him through turn four and led the final 11 laps.

“The restarts were just really slippery and I learned that in the race yesterday," Harvick said. "You had to really maintain your entrance speed and really slide the thing through the center of the corner to try to help keep it pointed up off."

Phoenix was given a fresh coat of asphalt in the middle of 2011. Sunday's race was the eighth race at the track. Even accounting for a 19th-place finish in the first race on the track's new surface, Harvick's average finish at the track since the repave is fifth. Astounding.

The win also meant Harvick recorded his seventh-straight top-two finish dating back to Texas, the third-to-last race of the 2014 season. He's the first driver since Richard Petty in 1974 to start a season with four-straight top-two finishes.

Harvick won at Las Vegas Motor Speedway last week and is the first driver to repeat in 2015 after Joey Logano and Jimmie Johnson won the first two races of the year.

Kurt Busch finished fifth in his first race back after he was reinstated by NASCAR. He was running as high as second before he pitted under caution with 20 laps to go and fell back in the field because not everyone elected to pit.

While Harvick and Busch succeeded, the rest of Stewart-Haas Racing struggled. In addition to Patrick's spin, Tony Stewart crashed twice. The first one happened after he worked his way into the top 10 and spun around after contact with Justin Allgaier. The second came when his wounded car lost a tire on the frontstretch.

News sport : Alabama fires head coach Anthony Grant after six seasons

Mar 12, 2015; Nashville, TN, USA; Alabama Crimson Tide coach Anthony Grant during the second half of the second round against the Florida Gators in the SEC Conference Tournament at Bridgestone Arena. Florida won 69-61. (Christopher Hanewinckel-USA TODAY Sports) After he led the program to one NCAA tournament appearance in six seasons, Alabama has fired head coach Anthony Grant.

The school announced the move on Sunday, less than an hour before the NCAA Selection Show.

"Earlier today, I informed Anthony Grant that he will not be retained as head men's basketball coach at the University of Alabama," Alabama athletic director Bill Battle said in a statement. "This decision was reached only after a great deal of deliberation, but I feel it is in the best interests of the basketball program to make a change in leadership. This has been a very difficult decision, as I have the highest respect for Anthony as a coach, as a molder of young men, and as a person.”

Grant took over the program in 2009 after he spent three seasons at VCU. He led the team to the NIT finals in 2011 and reached the NCAA Tournament in 2012, but lost in the first round. The Crimson Tide again reached the NIT in 2013 but have struggled in the last two years.

In 2014, the Tide won just 13 games, while this year Grant’s team improved to 18-14 but lost to Florida in its first game of the SEC tournament. The Tide could still be selected for the NIT when the field is unveiled at 8:30 p.m. ET on Sunday night.

Overall in his six seasons, Grant’s record was 117-85.

"In this business we are ultimately judged by wins and losses on the court and, for a variety of reasons, we haven't made satisfactory progress in that area,” Battle said.

"Today's decision is part of a larger evaluation of every facet of our basketball program that is intended to improve every aspect of our basketball program. A key component in that effort is to get all of our fans pulling in the same direction, and to make Coleman Coliseum the best home court advantage in the SEC.”

Battle said in his statement that a national search for Grant’s replacement will begin immediately. Two obvious names that come to mind for the opening are Murray State’s Steve Prohm, an Alabama graduate, and Louisiana Tech head coach Michael White, who turned down the head job at Tennessee last year.

News sport : Ticket punched: Kevin Ware propels Georgia State to tourney, coach gets hurt in celebration (Video)

Georgia State won the Sun Belt Conference tournament and clinched a berth in the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2001 in a 38-36 defensive struggle over Georgia Southern.

It was the second time the Panthers knocked off the Eagles in eight days, but this one was far different than the 72-55 victory last Saturday. In that game, GSU leading scorer R.J. Hunter put up 35 points to lead all scorers. On Sunday, it was Kevin Ware – the Louisville transfer who suffered a gruesome leg break during the 2013 NCAA tournament – who put up 18 points, his second-highest point total of the season.

Hunter struggled with only nine points on 3-of-15 shooting, but hit two deciding free throws with 21.6 seconds to go. Georgia Southern had a chance for the win with two 3-point attempts in the final seconds, but both missed and the Panthers celebrated.

Amid the celebration, GSU head coach Ron Hunter – R.J.’s father – was injured and the prognosis isn’t good. After the game is was revealed that Hunter tore his right Achilles tendon.

“When I saw the red lights go off I jumped up,” Hunter said after the game, per NOLA.com. “I tore my Achilles years ago on the right side playing basketball when I was 26. It was the exact same feeling. I hadn't jumped that high in 26 years. I knew when I came down. Instead of stopping right there, I wanted to go celebrate with my team. But more importantly I wanted to go celebrate with my son.”

Hunter was given a pair of crutches to use and perhaps more importantly, the basket was lowered, allowing him to cut down the net.

The team was planning to fly back from New Orleans (where the game took place) to campus in Atlanta, but now they’ll make the trip via bus to accommodate Hunter’s injury. He also said there’s not a chance he’ll miss the NCAA tournament.

"The team doctor is here and she said we'll probably just cast it and we'll do everything after the tournament,” Hunter said when asked if he would need surgery.

“They wanted me to stay back here, but I'm going back with my guys. I'm not staying in New Orleans. We'll deal with this [Monday]. But nothing is going to keep me from going to the NCAA tournament and celebrating with my guys tonight. It'll be the best bus ride back I've ever had.”

Chris Obekpa, the nation's fifth-leading shot blocker, has been suspended for the next two weeks as a result of an unspecified team rules violation, St. John's coach Steve Lavin announced Sunday afternoon. Obekpa would not be eligible to return to the team prior to March 29, which means the Johnnies would have to make the Final Four for him to play again this season.

To say the least, that's a long shot. Most mock brackets projected St. John's (21-11) in the 8-9-seed range before the Obekpa news. It's possible the selection committee could drop the Johnnies further as a result of the suspension, though the timing of the announcement does not give it much time to adjust the bracket.

"All of the young men associated with our program are held to standards consistent with the aims and mission of our university," Lavin said in a school-released statement. "Accountability is tied to the decision making of our student-athletes. It is our hope Chris will learn from this experience."

Obekpa, a 6-foot-10 junior, averaged 7.0 rebounds, 5.8 points and 3.2 blocks per game this season. He nearly transferred after last season, further calling into question whether he will return to St. John's for his senior season.
