News sport : Vikings release veteran WR Greg Jennings

Dec 21, 2014; Miami Gardens, FL, USA; Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Greg Jennings (15) scores a touchdown as Miami Dolphins cornerback Brent Grimes (21) reacts during the first half at Sun Life Stadium. (Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports) Well, this isn’t a surprise.

Hours after acquiring Mike Wallace in a trade from the Miami Dolphins, the Minnesota Vikings announced Saturday that they released veteran receiver Greg Jennings.

The 31-year-old Jennings, who caught 59 passes for 742 yards and six touchdowns in 2014, was set to earn $8.9 million in 2015. With Wallace in the fold along with Cordarrelle Patterson, Charles Johnson and Jarius Wright, Jennings was expendable.

Though Jennings played in all 16 games and was pretty steady throughout the season, Wright and Johnson emerged late in the season as solid targets for young quarterback Teddy Bridgewater.

Jennings spent the first seven seasons of his career with Green Bay where he caught 389 passes for 6,171 yards and 49 touchdowns. He then signed a five-year, $47.5 million deal with Minnesota in March 2013. He recorded 68 receptions for 804 yards and four scores in his first year with the Vikings.

Despite his release, Jennings can still be a reliable veteran option for a team looking for receiving help. He should attract a good bit of interest.

Giroud stars in Arsenal win

Arsenal maintained their hold on a top four place in the Premier League with a win over West Ham.

|||

Arsenal enjoyed the perfect preparation for their Champions League showdown with Monaco as they maintained their hold on a top four place in the Premier League with 3-0 win over West Ham on Saturday.

Goals from Olivier Giroud, Aaron Ramsey and substitute Mathieu Flamini ensured Arsene Wenger's side will travel to the principality with their confidence high as they attempt the tricky task of overturning a 3-1 deficit from the first leg of their last 16 tie.

The third placed Gunners were on top from the start of a one-sided London derby, although it took a while for the goals to arrive.

Theo Walcott couldn't even get a shot out when he should have put the home side ahead after just five minutes.

Giroud flicked the winger through with a divine back heel that took out the whole West Ham back line but, with Walcott one-on-one with Adrian, the England international hesitated.

When he tried to get a shot off, West Ham defender James Collins was across to send him to the turf, only for referee Chris Foy to wave away Arsenal's penalty appeals.

West Ham successfully kept Arsenal at bay for a period, and might even have taken the lead when Kevin Nolan volleyed at goal from the edge of the box, but David Ospina managed to keep it out.

The first half siege really started when Ramsey attempted to score with his knee, showing fine improvisation for a high cross, but West Ham goalkeeper Adrian's response was equally impressive as he touched over.

The Spaniard then saved from another Walcott one-on-one, a Alexis Sanchez volley, and a Mesut Ozil drive.

It was a sign of Arsenal's frustration that, at one point towards the end of the first half, Sanchez seemed to try to punch the ball past Adrian.

Despite trying to use the goalkeeper for cover, though, the Chilean's attempt was seen by Foy and a booking was issued.

Yet, as anxious as Arsenal were getting, it did seem only a matter of time until an opening arrived.

It duly did, on the stroke of half-time.

Ozil, Ramsey and Giroud played a fine interchange, before the French striker checked inside and unleashed a high shot in off the post.

It capped what had been an excellent first half for Giroud.

West Ham came out stronger in the second half and might have equalised when Matt Jarvis was presented with a clear shot on goal about 15 yards out, but the winger blazed wastefully over.

The game was then disrupted when Foy had to go off injured with a calf strain, with fourth official Anthony Taylor on in his place as a gleeful chant of “You're not fit to referee” rang around the ground.

The Arsenal fans still weren't totally comfortable, though, as they still hadn't killed off the game.

Ozil's strange decision on 70 minutes didn't help his team's cause.

Through on goal and with a clear shot presenting itself, the Germany midfielder opted to chip it across the box.

The subsequent shot went just wide, but Ozil himself seemed in a far better position.

Arsenal finally improved their own position on 82 minutes as Ramsey struck to double the lead.

Giroud was again instrumental. The striker allowed a throw-in to roll past him, before exchanging a one-two with Ramsey, who hit a half-volley past Adrian.

Arsenal then made it 3-0 thanks to quick thinking between two substitutes as Santi Cazorla played the ball across the box for French midfielder Flamini to slot home.– AFP

Villa’s revival continues

Aston Villa, who have been short of goals all season, suddenly burst into attacking life with a thumping Premier League victory at Sunderland.

|||

London - Aston Villa, who have been short of goals all season, suddenly burst into attacking life with a thumping 4-0 victory at Sunderland in a Premier League relegation clash on Saturday.

The hosts bagged four first-half goals with Gabriel Agbonlahor and Christian Benteke both scoring twice to give manager Tim Sherwood bragging rights over former Tottenham Hotspur team mate Gus Poyet.

Manager Poyet was grim-faced at the final whistle after his Sunderland team had capitulated at the Stadium of Light.

Villa leapfrogged Sunderland into 16th place in the 20-team standings with 28 points from 29 matches, two points ahead of Poyet's side.

Third-placed Arsenal tightened their grip on a spot in the top four, continuing an impressive run of form at the Emirates with a 3-0 win over West Ham United.

Third from bottom Queens Park Rangers did little to boost their survival chances as a dismal 3-1 defeat by Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park left them four points from safety.

Leicester City remained bottom after a 0-0 draw against Hull City who had midfielder Tom Huddlestone sent off for a second bookable offence in the second half.

Brown Ideye's header gave West Bromwich Albion a 1-0 victory over Stoke City at The Hawthorns.

Second-placed Manchester City travel to Burnley later on Saturday needing a win to reduce the five-point gap on leaders Chelsea who play Southampton on Sunday. – Reuters

News sport : Report: 49ers sign running back Reggie Bush

FILE - In this Oct. 29, 2014, file photo, Detroit Lions running back Reggie Bush carries the ball against the New Orleans Saints during an NFL football game in Detroit. The Lions released Bush on Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2015, halfway through the four-year deal he signed as a free agent before the 2013 season. (AP Photo/Duane Burleson, File) Another free agent running back is off the board.

A day after C.J. Spiller, Darren McFadden and DeAngelo Williams agreed to deals with New Orleans, Dallas and Pittsburgh, respectively, Reggie Bush has reached an agreement with the San Francisco 49ers.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter was the first to report the deal. No details of the agreement were provided.

The 30-year-old Bush reportedly visited New England this week, but came away without a deal. Now the nine-year veteran will return to California, where he had a record-setting college career at USC.

Bush spent the past two seasons with Detroit, but was slowed by an ankle injury in 2014. He ran for only 297 yards and had 40 catches for 253 yards last season, following a very productive 2013 season that included 1,006 yards rushing along with 54 catches for 506 yards.

Before his two years in Detroit, Bush spent two seasons in Miami and five seasons with the New Orleans Saints, who drafted him second overall in 2006. Overall in his career, Bush has combined for 5,465 yards and 35 scores on the ground and 466 catches for 3,489 yards and 18 touchdowns receiving.

Bush fills a void for the 49ers at running back after Frank Gore left the franchise after 10 seasons to sign with the Indianapolis Colts.

The 49ers also return Carlos Hyde and Kendall Hunter at running back. Hyde rushed for 333 yards and four touchdowns as a rookie in 2014 while Hunter missed the season with a knee injury.

News sport : Mississippi State WR De’Runnya Wilson arrested for marijuana possession

Mississippi State wide receiver De'Runnya Wilson (1) runs in the second half of the Orange Bowl NCAA college football against Georgia Tech. (AP Photo/Lynne Sladky) Mississippi State wide receiver De’Runnya Wilson was one of four men arrested Friday night in Covington County, Ala., for marijuana possession and possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to WSFA 12, Wilson and three others were pulled over for a traffic stop on Highway 84. River Falls (Ala.) Police Chief Greg Jackson said the group was traveling in a Jeep and was pulled over for speeding. Per the Clarion Ledger, the Keep was pulled over “for going 59 miles per hour in a 45 mile an hour speed zone in the rain.”

Officers reportedly smelled marijuana in the vehicle and Jackson said marijuana was found in the car. Additionally, the four men, who were reportedly “traveling to a friend’s 21st birthday party” admitted “they couldn’t pass a drug test.”

The 20-year-old Wilson, who was released on $2,500 bond, led the Bulldogs in receiving as a sophomore in 2014 with 47 catches for 680 yards and nine touchdowns. Wilson also caught 26 balls for 351 yards and three touchdowns as a true freshman in 2013.

Mississippi State spokesperson Bill Martin told the Clarion Ledger that the program is “aware of the matter.”

“We are getting more details and will handle it appropriately,” Martin said.

Mississippi State is scheduled to begin spring practice on Wednesday.

News sport : Montana's wild win featured a game-winner, swan dive and postgame fracas (Video)

Montana guard Jordan Gregory hit a game-winning layup to move the Grizzlies past Northern Arizona and into the Big Sky finals, but it wasn’t without some controversy.

After Northern Arizona’s Kris Yanku hit a free throw to tie the game at 59 with eight seconds remaining, Gregory took it the length of the court and drove to the hole for the clutch basket. As the ball went through the basket, Montana’s Jermaine Edmonds excitedly rushed the court without realizing there was still 0.4 seconds left on the clock.

[DraftKings: Play Conference Championship Fantasy – Free entry with first deposit]

Edmonds, an academically ineligible player who wasn’t in uniform, quickly realized his mistake and dove back to the sideline as NAU was inbounding the ball.

Edmonds’ mistake could have resulted in a technical foul, but the officials “determined that the commotion did not interfere with the play, and no technical was called.”

NAU coach Jack Murphy wasn’t pleased with the way things turned out and got in the face of Montana coach Travis DeCuire in the post-game handshake line. A brief scuffle ensued, but no punches were thrown.

Here’s the entire wacky sequence in its entirety, thanks to Dan Cimmino of KPAX in Missoula.

The video clearly shows Murphy sparking the confrontation and he was apologetic after the game.

From the Missoulian:

"I'd like to start by apologizing there at the end," Murphy said. "Montana played a fantastic game and I don't want anything to take away from the quality of that game. I thought that Montana played very, very hard and we played hard. ... Obviously at the end of the year like this when everything is on the line and it's a tight game emotions bubble over at times. I want to give Coach DeCuire a big congratulations."

Big Sky commissioner Doug Fullerton complimented the players from both sides for the way they handled things and trying to break up the fracas. However, the league will continue to review Murphy’s actions.

“First thing, I want to compliment the players," Fullerton said in a statement. "The players as we watch them, there are no punches thrown, and they are breaking it up. They absolutely did a good job, both sets of players. The one thing people want to know about is (Montana coach) Travis (DeCuire), I see absolutely no action by Travis that would cause us to suspend him or cause any problems for Travis tomorrow. We're still reviewing the head coach at Northern Arizona.”

The win improves Montana’s record to 20-11 on the season and sets up a Big Sky championship matchup with 25-8 Eastern Washington, a team that upset Indiana earlier in the season.

[Fill out a Tourney bracket and get a free Big Gulp Drink]

The teams split two matchups during the season with Eastern Washington winning 75-69 on Feb. 5 and Montana coming out on top 77-76 on Feb. 28.

The winner earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

News sport : Russell Westbrook secures 6th triple-double in 8 games with some friendly score-keeping

Russell Westbrook's been something of a one-man army for the Oklahoma City Thunder over the past month. But even the league's leader in points per game and assist percentage can use a little bit of help every now and again.

[DraftKings: FREE entry to huge cash Fantasy Basketball Contest with first deposit]

Like, for example, when you're looking for that elusive 10th rebound to put the finishing touches on yet another triple-double in your recent run for the ages. In that type of situation, it's nice to have a friendly relationship with the home score-keeper:

Minnesota Timberwolves center Justin Hamilton came away with the ball after Thunder guard D.J. Augustin's 3-point try with just over 2 1/2 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter at Chesapeake Energy Arena on Friday night, but only after Westbrook had inserted himself in the play to try to put the miss back up and in. At that point, Westbrook had already rolled up 29 points and 12 assists, but he was stuck on nine rebounds, leaving him one shy of the big round number needed to pull off the troika trick that's become his calling card of late.

And so, with only a couple of minutes left in what looked sure to be a breezy Thunder victory, Russell Westbrook pulled out his trademark charm, according to ESPN.com's Royce Young:

[Westbrook] looked over at the Thunder's official scorekeepers, holding his arm up.

"Tip?" he said, nodding his head. "Tip?"

A quick conference at the scorer's table and right around the time the buzzer sounded on the Thunder's 113-99 win, Westbrook suddenly had his triple-double: 29 points, 10 rebounds and 12 assists. [...]

The rebound appears to be a tad dubious, an offensive board awarded with 2:35 left where Westbrook went up to tip back a missed 3-point attempt by D.J. Augustin. Westbrook was given a missed shot on it, so everything is on the up and up, but still, hard not to raise an eyebrow.

So, was he campaigning for the rebound or what?

"Uhh, no," Westbrook said.

You sure?

"No," he said, unleashing a trademark glare.

Nice try, Mr. Westbrook. But we've watched enough election coverage to irrevocably damage our brains for the next several centuries know that any politician worth his or her salt never stops campaigning, and that sometimes, in the heat of the moment, a hopeful "Tip?" can tip the scales in your favor. And if that's all it takes to seal your sixth triple-double in eight games and your league-leading eighth of the season — nobody else has more than three — to give you more triple-doubles in a season than anyone since Jason Kidd in 2007-08 ... well, I mean, #whynot, right?

Whether you find this particular brand of score-keeping sauce to be weak or awesome, it doesn't materially change the fact that Westbrook once again grabbed a game by the scruff of its neck and propelled the Thunder to a needed victory, this time a comfortable 113-99 win over the Western Conference cellar-dwelling Minnesota Timberwolves that improved the Thunder's record to 36-29, same as the New Orleans Pelicans, their chief competition for the No. 8 seed in the West's playoff race. (New Orleans remains in the eighth spot, though, by virtue of the Pelicans' 3-1 win in the season series with Oklahoma City.)

Reasonable people can differ about the validity of that 10th rebound, but it's inarguable that Westbrook turned in yet another all-things-to-all-people performance, alternating between orchestrating the Oklahoma City attack to make sure his big men ate and going solo to the cup to keep the Wolves at bay:

With starting power forward Serge Ibaka out of the lineup for the first time this season, sidelined by a sore right knee, Thunder coach Scott Brooks gave rookie big man Mitch McGary the first start of his NBA career. (“Great opportunity,” the coach said before the game. “Welcome to an NBA starting lineup, you get to guard Kevin Garnett, one of the greatest bigs of all-time.”)

The Michigan man held his own, scoring 12 points in 22 1/2 minutes of work. All six of his baskets came off direct assists from Westbrook, who fed the freshman multiple drop-off passes at the rim after drawing all the Wolves' defensive attention, and who generated a couple of open McGary jumpers out of pick-and-roll and pick-and-pop actions.

Westbrook also continued to showcase his wonderful chemistry with trade deadline acquisition Enes Kanter, notching assists on three of the Turkish center's 10 baskets, including this lovely open-court give-and-go for a Kanter slam as the Thunder began to take control in the third quarter:

Kanter continued his excellent offensive work since joining the Thunder after spending his first three-plus NBA seasons with the Utah Jazz, torching the Wolves for 23 points on 10-for-19 shooting to go with 15 rebounds, including nine on the offensive glass, in 33 minutes in the win. It was the third time in Kanter's 10 games with the Thunder that he's scored at least 20 points and grabbed at least 10 rebounds; he's averaging 15.5 points and 9.4 boards in 28.7 minutes per game in Oklahoma City, and getting all the interior touches he can handle.

“In Utah, I was playing more four, spacing out and shooting more,” Kanter said after the game, according to Anthony Slater of The Oklahoman. “Now, coach wants me to be inside more, post up and get those rebounds.”

And if Kanter and the other Thunder bigs can take care of that, Westbrook has proven he can take care of the rest:

[Follow Dunks Don't Lie on Tumblr: The best slams from all of basketball]

Westbrook is now averaging 32.9 points, 11.1 assists and 10.1 rebounds in 36.3 minutes per game since the All-Star break, a run of individual brilliance that's allowed a Thunder squad that's still without ailing MVP Kevin Durant stay afloat in the Western playoff chase. After the game, though, Westbrook didn't highlight his strong suits or how much he's been doing all over the court for his club; instead, he harped on his flaws.

"I do know one thing, I need to stop turning the ball over, I can tell you that much," Westbrook said after committing eight turnovers, his third straight game with that many cough-ups, according to Cliff Brunt of The Associated Press. "It's frustrating trying to make passes and turning it over, but at the same time, we're winning. I'll go back to the drawing board and take care of it."

And hey, if that doesn't work, maybe give the score-keeper a wink and a nod. I've heard that can help.

Palace add to QPR’s relegation fears

Queens Park Rangers' relegation fears worsened and their dismal away record continued with defeat by Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park in the Premier League.

London - Queens Park Rangers' relegation fears worsened and their dismal away record continued with a 3-1 defeat by Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park in the Premier League.

Defeat for QPR, who have lost 13 of 14 away games this season, left them 19th with 22 points from 29 matches. Palace are 12th on 33 points.

Wilfried Zaha put Palace ahead before the hosts scored two goals in two minutes as James McArthur doubled the advantage and Joel Ward added a third late in the first half.

Matt Phillips pulled a late goal back with a thunderous strike but it failed to spark a QPR revival and Chris Ramsey's side now face an uphill battle to avoid relegation.

Second-placed Manchester City travel to Burnley later on Saturday needing a win to close the five-point gap on leaders Chelsea, who play Southampton on Sunday.

Spurs need win against United

Tottenham go to Old Trafford at a peak of form and fitness which is surprising given their tired defeat in the Capital One Cup final.

|||

Mauricio Pochettino insisted he was not happy as he sat at home on Thursday evening, with the Europa League on one screen and Premier League darts on the other. He wanted Tottenham Hotspur, rather than Fiorentina, to have the privilege of hosting Roma in the last-16 first leg.

But there can be no doubt that when Spurs go to Manchester United tomorrow they will be far better off for having had a rare free midweek. Pochettino gave the players two days off at the start of the week and when they returned he put them through a double session on Tuesday to prepare them for their crucial last 10 Premier League games, and the fight for fourth place.

“They asked for more days off but we need to work,” Pochettino joked yesterday. “It has been tough since the beginning of the season. In the way that we play and want to improve our play, it is important to have a clean week to work. This week it was very good to work hard.”

Tottenham go to Old Trafford at a peak of form and fitness which is surprising given their tired defeat in the Capital One Cup final at Wembley two weeks ago. They have won both their league games since then and, crucially, did not have to fly back from Dnipropetrovsk, Kiev, St Petersburg or Istanbul in the early hours of yesterday morning.

“The players are very focused and try to give their best in every game and training session,” Pochettino said. “It's true that it was tough after the Capital One Cup final to [adjust to] the defeat. But the team's response was fantastic. They have got a very good feeling.”

If Spurs win tomorrow only goal difference will separate them from Louis van Gaal's side. They will move up to fifth, with Liverpool not playing until Monday, and with Leicester City, Burnley and Aston Villa next to come, they would have a good chance of qualifying for next season's Champions League.

The problem is that, for all their improvement this year, Spurs are still waiting for one big statement victory away against a good team. They played well in patches in Premier League defeats at Anfield, Stamford Bridge and the Etihad Stadium, and in the 1-1 draw at the Emirates. Pochettino hopes for a different outcome this time. “It is never easy,” he said. “We tried to get the three points but it was difficult. Maybe it will be possible on Sunday.”

If there is a justified criticism of Spurs' recent form it is that they have kept just one Premier League clean sheet in 2015, but Pochettino insisted there would be no change of approach for this game.

“My football idea is always to think about going at the opponent's goal,” he said. “This will not change. That would be to go against myself. My philosophy is to always have the ball and play attacking football and try to damage the opponent. I am brave. I want to win games.”

Pochettino takes confidence from the form of Danny Rose, whom he described yesterday as the best English left-back in the Premier League. Rose is considering representing Jamaica internationally but Pochettino said he should be part of Roy Hodgson's plans, as statistics show that he has overtaken Luke Shaw. Last season Shaw enjoyed an excellent season under Pochettino's management at Southampton but he has struggled since his £30m move to Manchester United last summer.

“So far Rose has been the best left-back this season; his performances have been great,” Pochettino said, putting the improvement down to Rose himself. “It is our job to compare our players with other players in the same position and we believe that Danny Rose has so far been the best English left-back.”

The manager said this judgement was based on in-house statistics as well as observation, and while he said it was not his place to judge Shaw, he said Rose had overtaken him. “Shaw was maybe in the top three [English left-backs] in the Premier League [in 2013-14]. I think that because after the season ended he was at the World Cup.”

Tottenham received some good news yesterday as their neighbour Archway Steel announced it would not be appealing against the High Court's decision to refuse its legal challenge to the compulsory purchase order which is necessary to the progress of Tottenham's hopes of building a new stadium.

Rodgers relaxed over Sterling contract

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is confident Raheem Sterling will sign a contract extension at Anfield despite talks being put on hold until the end of the season.

|||

London - Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is confident Raheem Sterling will sign a contract extension at Anfield despite talks being put on hold until the end of the season.

The 20-year-old England international, whose deal expires in 2017, has developed into one of Liverpool's most influential players and has scored 10 goals in all competitions this season.

“I am relaxed about the Raheem situation. He has a couple of years to go,” Rodgers told a news conference on Saturday.

“It is quite obvious that Liverpool is the best option for him. He has just turned 20 in December and he has already made 114 appearances.

“He has a great opportunity and for any young player there is a great opportunity here. We have a track record of developing talents and there will be more of those players like Raheem who will get that opportunity.”

Fifth-placed Liverpool are unbeaten in the league since mid-December and their rapid rise up the table means they are now two points behind Manchester United who occupy fourth spot.

Liverpool travel to Rodgers's former club Swansea City on Monday and the Northern Irishman is expecting a close fight in the race for Champions League qualification.

“I think it is going to be very tight,” Rodgers said. “We have joined the race in the last few months and we are really looking forward to these games.

“We need to continue to be aggressive and give everything we have. The points total is very close.” – Reuters

Downs, Pirates seek to emulate Pirates

Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs have a mighty tough task on their hands as they attempt to emulate Orlando Pirates by becoming African kings.

|||

On the face of it both Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs have a mighty tough task on their hands as they attempt to emulate Orlando Pirates by becoming African kings.

The South African giants have to overcome multiple continental champions in the form of TP Mazembe of the Democratic Republic of Congo and Morocco’s Raja Casablanca in Caf Champions League first round clashes, whose first leg matches both host tonight.

Scale these hurdles and the dream to add that coveted star onto their jerseys could well become a reality, victories over these two sure to earn the Brazilians and Amakhosi respect from future opposition. But can they succeed? Can Pitso Mosimane’s high-flying Sundowns who tore Polokwane City apart on Wednesday do the same to the “all powerful” – TP, is an acronym for Tout Puissant which means all powerful – Mazembe?

What chance do Chiefs have of lifting themselves from their shock 1-0 defeat at lowly Maritzburg United to send the Green Devils back to Casablanca with tails between their legs?

If anything, Sundowns fans can rest assured Mosimane will have a great plan to see his team get the better of a Mazembe side that have been African champions on four occasions. Since capturing the domestic league back in May, Mosimane has been preparing for the Champions League. At his house, two DStv Explorers are teeming with recordings of the continental tournament’s matches from the past season and he would have watched the ones involving Mazembe over and over to know just about everything there is to know about the Ravens.

When they walk on to the Loftus Versfeld pitch tonight, Teko Modise and Co will be aware of their opponents’ strengths and weaknesses and it will be up to them to exploit them.

They will also know that Sundowns beat Mazembe before, 1-0 at home during a group match in 1997. The fact that the revered Congolese side also came unstuck against Pirates two years ago will not be lost on the master planner that is Mosimane, who is sure to have picked up useful lessons from that heroic showing by the Buccaneers.

In the end, it will be left to the players to do the job. And based on the way they tore City apart, Sundowns might just have Mazembe’s beating. But the Congolese are going to be a much better disciplined outfit defensively.

Chiefs, on the other hand, have a scoring woe to contend with as they take on Raja. Having failed to breach both the Pirates and Maritzburg defence in the past week, coach Stuart Baxter should be scratching his head as he looks to find a way to get his team firing again.

North African teams are generally renowned for their defensive prowess and Raja will be no different.

Admittedly, the departure of Kingston Nkhatha has left Chiefs bereft of a point of focus in their play – the Zimbabwean having been the centre of all Amakhosi’s attacks, his ball-holding abilities ensuring that the team’s midfielders were able to come from deep to score goals. That is no longer the case and neither Siphelele Mthembu nor Matthew Rusike have shown themselves capable of being Chiefs’ new source of goals while Bernard Parker continues to be the “half a season player” he has always been.

Both sides know they need to make full use of their homeground advantage as the second leg will be mighty tough in hostile conditions. - Saturday Star

Sterling stalls over new Anfield deal

Liverpool forward Raheem Sterling has shelved contract talks until the end of the season.

|||

Liverpool forward Raheem Sterling has shelved contract talks until the end of the season.

The development casts further doubt over the England international’s long-term future at Anfield.

Sterling has been locked in talks over a contract extension for several months but the 20-year-old has told club officials he wants to focus on the remainder of Liverpool’s Premier League season and on winning the FA Cup.

The news will be met with anxiety by club chiefs, who are desperate to secure Sterling on a long-term deal and the next round of talks, when they recommence in the summer, will be critical, with his existing £35,000-per-week deal expiring in 2017.

Given Sterling’s status as one of Europe’s top emerging talents, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are watching on closely.

Likewise, Premier League clubs will also enter the race if it becomes clear Sterling is available.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers claims Sterling has been offered an ‘incredible deal’ — which is understood to be close to £100,000-per-week.

Rodgers has previously insisted Sterling is close to putting pen to paper, but as it stands there is no agreeement.

The Anfield boss has called the Jamaican-born forward the best young player in Europe and is under increasing pressure to ensure the club keep their jewel in the crown. Whether Liverpool finish in the top four is likely to be a factor in Sterling’s decision. – Daily Mail

Ten-man Amazulu hold on for draw

Johannesburg – Ten-man, relegation-threatened Amazulu survived an 85-minute seige to gain a valuable 1-1 Premier League draw with Chippa United at the Nelson Mandela Stadium.

Referee Victor Gomes' decision to send off Amazulu's Bongi Ntuli in only the fifth minute for a crunching tackle constituted something of a PSL record and left the bottom club in the log fighting for their lives literally from the outset.

Chippa, who enjoyed a stirring sequence of success early in the season on their return to the Premier League, experienced the frustration of failing to make use of their numerical advantage while completing an 11th successive match without a victory.

The supporters of the Port Elizabeth-based club vented their anger on German-born coach Ernst Middendorp over the failure to gain three points against their depleted, struggling opponents.

In the process, Chippa have joined a group of five teams above AmaZulu in the log who are seperated by no more than three points and are all candidates to avoid relegation as well.

Ironically it was AmaZulu who took the lead in the 34th minute through a precise header from former Bafana Bafana central defender and captain Mbulelo Mabizela following an equally pin-point free-kick from Sifiso Hlanti.

It required an own goal on the part of AmaZulu defender Sadat Ouro-Akoriko to put Chippa on level terms. This followed after a cross from Erick Chipeta into a packed goalmouth during injury time of the opening period.

The second half was played almost entirely in the Amazulu half of the pitch as the Durban-based team played as though their lives depended on it to salvage a valuable point.

Energy Murambadoro in the AmaZulu goal was continually kept in action during the final 45 minutes while bringing off a series of timely saves.

Chippa had 15 attempts at goal, but the finishing of the home team was often inept and off-target.

“There is no excuse for failing to take advantage of playing against 10 men for 85 minutes. I have faith in my players to ultimately fulfil their potential.

“At the same time I must give credit to AmaZulu for their gritty defending. They produced every trick in the book, but you can understand that when a team is handicapped as they were,” said Middendorp.

AmaZulu coach Steve Barker said he was proud of his players for their heroic performance.

“We needed three points in our battle to avoid relegation and continue the team's recent revival. This was not a case of shedding two much-needed points. It was a fighting display to come away with a draw with 10 men and deserves credit,” said Barker. – Sapa

News sport : Gritty Xavier survives near-disaster against Georgetown, advances to Big East title game

NEW YORK — Xavier hasn’t had it easy and it certainly hasn’t been pretty, but in their second year in the Big East they’re heading to the tournament final.

The No. 6 seed Musketeers upset No. 2 seed Georgetown 65-63 in the semifinals, surviving after nearly blowing a 20-point second half lead. Backcourt mates Dee Davis and Myles Davis sunk four free throws in the final ten seconds and Chris Mack’s strategy of fouling the Hoyas before they could get a three off worked.

Xavier led 53-33 with 7:53 remaining when Georgetown’s Jabril Trawick stepped to the line and split a pair of free throws. He missed the second, and in the scrum for the ensuing rebound, Xavier sophomore Jalen Reynolds committed a technical. That sparked a 24-6 Hoya run over the next seven minutes, capped by a Paul White three with 24 seconds remaining to make it 59-57. Hoya guard D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera’s layup made it a one-point game with 14 seconds left, but Xavier made enough free throws to reach the tournament final and defeat Georgetown for the third time this season. The game was so tight, the video board operator at Madison Square Garden initially had their graphics wrong after the game’s conclusion:

Friday night’s semifinal likely wasn’t even the toughest game of the Musketeers’ journey, as they needed overtime to get past No. 3 seed Butler in Thursday night’s quarters. In both games they were anchored by the interior play of senior Matt Stainbrook, who had 20 points, nine boards and a strong defensive effort against Georgetown center Joshua Smith. Against Butler, Stainbrook – known for his Rec-Specs and rebounding prowess – had 13 points and 10 boards, leading his team in both categories.

Senior guard Dee Davis has been a rock despite a bad shooting night on Friday, playing 82 minutes over the two games, including every second of the Georgetown win. Davis has been at the front of a defense that hasn’t allowed either Big East Tournament opponent to shoot over 40%. Another key to the Musketeer success so far in New York has been a strong effort from their bench, which has outscored their opponents 46-8 this postseason.

“We came here to win a Big East Championship,” said Davis Friday night after the game. “We didn’t come here to beat Georgetown. We came here to win a Big East championship. So that’s our plan.”

The Musketeers lost in the semifinals to Doug McDermott’s Creighton squad last year, which was their first trip to the Garden for a conference tournament as a new member of the Big East. They’ll play No. 1 seed Villanova for the title, a Wildcats team that barely held on against Providence in the first semifinal of the night, prevailing 63-61 on a pair of late free throws.

“We’re not going to change a whole lot,” said Mack about the quick-turnaround before playing Villanova, who will be looking to lock up a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. "They shoot the ball pretty well, I hear.”

Xavier lost both regular season matchups against Villanova but could earn their third straight win over a ranked opponent with an upset. The Musketeers will likely be without freshman guard J.P. Macura, who hit a pair of threes in the first half Friday night before leaving with an ankle injury. In the postgame press conference Mack said he didn’t think it looked good but didn’t know for sure when he would be available.

News sport : UCLA may find itself on the outside looking in after Arizona loss

LAS VEGAS — Ten minutes away from a potentially season-saving victory against the nation's fifth-ranked team, UCLA endured a lull at the worst possible time.

Quick shots, missed box-outs and poor transition defense fueled a five-minute Arizona surge that transformed a seven-point deficit into an eight-point lead and enabled the top-seeded Wildcats to emerge with a 70-64 victory.

Whereas Arizona will spend Saturday battling either Utah or Oregon for the Pac-12 tournament title and a potential No. 1 seed, UCLA has an anxious two days ahead of it. The Bruins are at the mercy of the selection committee after completing a season in which they rebounded from a five-game losing streak over the holidays to finish fourth in the Pac-12 yet still find themselves in jeopardy of missing the NCAA tournament for the third time in six years.

"It's frustrating because I feel like if we won tonight, we were probably a sure thing," sophomore guard Bryce Alford said. "That's what hurts the most. If we won tonight, we were confident we were going to win the tournament. Now we don't have the chance for an automatic bid and we have to sit and wait. That's not fun, but we put ourselves in that situation."

Most mock brackets had UCLA as one of the last teams out of the field entering Friday's game because the Bruins (20-13, 11-7) simply don't have enough quality wins. They toppled NCAA tournament-bound Utah and Oregon at Pauley Pavilion, but those two victories, a sweep of Stanford and a rout of Long Beach State are the only wins UCLA has over RPI top 100 teams.

Where UCLA may have let its season slip away was not in the second half against Arizona on Friday but on the road weeks earlier against some of the Pac-12's lightweights. The Bruins lost winnable February matchups with Arizona State and Cal and finished only 2-8 in true road games for the season.

UCLA coach Steve Alford hopes the selection committee takes into account that the Bruins have improved considerably over the course of the regular season and have notched their three best wins in the past six weeks. They also played competitive games against Arizona twice during that stretch, though both resulted in losses.

"I like our chances," the elder Alford said. "We're like a lot of people who are going to sit and wait. I've been doing this a long time, and I'll be hard-pressed to believe there's [36] better at-large teams than what we are."

The best news for UCLA was that the final impression it left on the selection committee was as good as the Bruins could have hoped for in a loss.

They turned Arizona into a jump shooting team with a long, active 3-2 zone. They built a 47-40 lead with 12 minutes left in the second half. And they did it all with maybe their best player limited by the unwieldy mask he had to wear to protect the facial injury he suffered the previous day.

Kevon Looney's long arms and quick hands made him effective at the top of UCLA's zone, but he scored only five points in part because he was hesitant to risk getting hit in the face again while driving into traffic or attacking the offensive glass. The freshman forward also had limited peripheral vision as a result of the mask, which certainly wasn't helpful defensively.

"I didn't have a lot of time to get used to the mask. The hardest part for me was seeing on defense. I played on top of the zone, and it was hard to see screens coming up behind me or seeing the weak side or seeing rebounds coming off. It was hard. It was hard to see."

Perhaps Looney's diminished vision played a role in the missed box-outs during Arizona's 15-0 second-half surge. Five offensive rebounds by the Wildcats netted three baskets during the run, two of which had nothing to do with UCLA playing zone because they came off missed free throws.

"Rebounding was the biggest factor in that 4 to 6-minute stretch they had," UCLA guard Norman Powell said. "I think they had something like three free throw blockout rebounds and they scored on all of them."

So now all UCLA can wait and hope that the selection committee ignores the warts on their profile. The Bruins looked good enough to play in the NCAA tournament Friday night, but it's their season-long results that will be judged.

"I think everyone in the room is confident we should be able to get in," Bryce Alford said. "We're one of the best teams right now. Even though we lost today, we lost to a big-time team and we played them well. If the committee looks at the eye test, I thought we passed that today."
