News sport : Fresno State mascot dies from bee sting

Fresno State's mascot, Victor E. Bulldog II, died after he was stung by a bee on Thursday.

According to the university, he went into severe anaphylactic shock after he was stung.

"Victor E. attended hundreds of Fresno State events. Everywhere he went, he attracted fans of all ages and was a loving face of Fresno State Athletics," Fresno State senior associate athletic director Paul Ladwig said in a statement.

Victor became Fresno's mascot in September of 2012 when he was introduced during a football game against Colorado.

Thursday was not a good day for bulldog mascots. In addition to the sudden passing of Victor, Butler's mascot, Blue, barfed on the court during the Big East Conference basketball tournament.

News sport : Mark Davis is not happy Raiders used as Greg Hardy's leverage

There's a game some agents play. They'll leak some interest, sometimes even a laughable "mystery team" leak, to drive up interest in their client.

Even though it's mostly dumb and transparent, it's also relatively harmless. That is, until a team whose owner has been outspoken against domestic violence gets cited as having interest in defensive end Greg Hardy, who was out most of last season because of a domestic violence incident.

Oakland Raiders owner Mark Davis wasn't happy to read the rumors about his team being interested in Hardy. Davis has been outspoken about domestic violence in the NFL.

“False, falser and falsest,” Davis told Tim Kawakami of the San Jose Mercury News regarding his team's reported interest in Hardy. “That is not true.”

Davis said any talks with Hardy would have had to come through him. And they haven't. And instead of just letting it go, he issued a strong denial. He wouldn't say he'd never sign someone who had a domestic-violence incident in their past, but it won't be Hardy. Hardy's agent is Drew Rosenhaus.

“I’m saying that he’s somebody we are not negotiating with and I don’t believe we would be interested in at this point in time,” Davis said to Kawakami. “I can tell you this: It has not been brought up to me and it would have to come to me … "

Both Bay Area teams have quickly backed away from any interest in Hardy. The 49ers said they didn't want Hardy, with general manager Trent Baalke saying there's "no interest that we’ve shown, nor will we show, in bringing Greg Hardy into this program," via the Sacramento Bee.

Hardy's free agency has been interesting. He's immensely talented, for sure. Teams usually aren't explicit about not being interested in a free agent, but now two have publicly stated in very strong terms they will not be signing him, quickly dismissing rumors.

Maybe Hardy can go play defensive end for Mystery Team in the fall.

News sport : Purdue player crashes press row in spectacular fashion

CHICAGO — Who said basketball — and sportswriting — isn't a contact sport?

[DraftKings: Play Conference Championship Fantasy – Free entry with first deposit]

Purdue junior Rapheal Davis and Indianapolis Star columnist Gregg Doyel proved both wrong on Friday afternoon after Davis dived for a ball at the Big Ten tournament and ended up plowing through a courtside press table. Both Doyel and a radio broadcasting crew took the brunt of Davis' 6-foot-5 frame in one of the more spectacular crowd-player interactions you'll ever see.

The best news: Neither Davis, nor Doyel, nor anyone else were hurt so we can watch this one again and again with a clear conscience. Anyone know if the Boilermaker football team needs an extra body next fall?

News sport : The 10-man rotation, starring Larry Bird's night in New Orleans

A look around the league and the web that covers it. It's also important to note that the rotation order and starting nods aren't always listed in order of importance. That's for you, dear reader, to figure out.

News sport : John Wall on Memphis sitting its starters: 'I guess they don't respect us'

With his team having lost five of nine, and set to play its fourth game in five nights, Memphis Grizzlies coach Dave Joerger did the sensible thing – he sat his starters for Thursday’s nationally televised contest against the Washington Wizards.

[DraftKings: FREE entry to huge cash Fantasy Basketball Contest with first deposit]

Working hand in hand with NBA orthodoxy, however, doesn’t always lead to sensible conclusions. Even though the league’s High Priest of Great Ideas has been resting his players for years, the league still commits teams to back-to-back and four-in-five-night scheduling; asking its championship-level players to work in upwards of over 100 exhibition, regular season, and postseason games in an eight-month span.

Then there is the peer pressure from within, which seemed to be the case in Washington as the Wizards smarted following the relatively easy 107-87 win over the self-inflicted shorthand Grizzlies. Lead guard John Wall didn’t exactly tee-off on the Grizzlies in anger after Memphis openly defied the Basketball Gods, but he did seem a little upset following the contest.

From the Associated Press:

''They sit 'em, and I don't know the reason why,'' Wall said. ''I think we're a team that's on the rise, and teams respect us now. And I guess they don't respect us.''

And from CSN Washington’s J. Michael:

"That's how I see it," said John Wall when asked if he felt Memphis disrespected them by trotting out a starting lineup of Beno Udrih, Courtney Lee, Jeff Green, JaMychal Green and Kosta Koufos.

Wall didn’t take out his frustrations on the box score, he finished his night with a 22-point mark next to his name, one that looks rather small in comparison to Kyrie Irving’s explosion in San Antonio on Thursday evening. With the Grizzlies so overmatched, however, Wall only needed to play 28 minutes in the contest, and he added seven rebounds and six assists to his ledger.

The Wizards star needn’t worry about Memphis’ motivation, however. With the Grizzlies’ status as the second seed in the West just about assured, the team was right to take a breather. The squad was coming off of a demoralizing loss to Boston the night before, and with yet another quick turnaround game against the defensively dogged Milwaukee Bucks lined up for Saturday night, time off was imperative.

The Grizzlies did lose the game, which means the team has dropped six of its last 10, but a coach knows when his players are well on their way to an eventual loss even at full strength. The Grizzlies didn’t rest starters against Washington thinking that their reserves would be able to pull out a win against Washington. They thought the loss was inevitable anyway, and made the best of it. Even if the Wizards and flailing just as much as Memphis.

[Follow Dunks Don't Lie on Tumblr: The best slams from all of basketball]

The Grizzlies are still two games up on the Dwight Howard-less Houston Rockets for the lead in the Southwest, and a game and a half up on the Wes Matthews-less Portland Trail Blazers for the second seed in the West. With that in place, even with just 17 games to go, the team is not out of the woods just yet.

Those Bucks remain a tough out, and the Grizzlies still have two games against the Warriors, a contest against Cleveland, a game against the Spurs, and a game against the Pacers (the hottest team in the NBA right now) to go. They’ll have to play the Clippers, the Trail Blazers, and desperate outfits from Dallas, Oklahoma City and New Orleans. A contest against the rapidly-improving Utah Jazz awaits them, and they’ll have the suitably angry Washington Wizards to roll up against on April 4.

The time for rest is now. Or, Thursday, rather.

Washington? Take it easy, guys. Let’s focus on more important stuff, like who can run the fastest.

News sport : Reports: Saints sign RB C.J. Spiller, trade WR Kenny Stills to Miami

Nearly a week after locking up Mark Ingram with a four-year deal, the Saints have reportedly added another back.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Saints and 27-year-old C.J. Spiller, formerly of the Buffalo Bills, have agreed to a deal. Details of the agreement weren’t disclosed.

Spiller spent the first five seasons of his career with Buffalo, often sharing carries with Fred Jackson.

Spiller ran for just 300 yards in an injury-plagued 2014 season, but showed versatility and big-play ability throughout his career in Buffalo. Over the course of his five seasons, Spiller rushed for 3,321 yards and 12 scores on 5.0 yards per carry. He also caught 158 passes for 1,195 yards and six more scores.

He’ll join a Saints backfield that also features the aforementioned Ingram and Khiry Robinson, who is entering his third season as a pro. Ingram led the team with 964 yards and nine touchdowns, but Robinson (76 carries for 362 yards and three scores) showed flashes as well.

The Spiller deal wasn't the Saints’ only move on Friday. Yahoo! Sports’ Rand Getlin was the first to report that the team was moving young wideout Kenny Stills to Miami. In exchange for Stills, who caught 63 passes for 931 yards last season, the Saints reportedly acquired linebacker Dannell Ellerbe and a third-round pick.

In Miami, Stills joins an impressive group of young pass-catchers, teaming up with second-year wideout Jarvis Landry and tight end Jordan Cameron, who signed with the team on Thursday.

The Saints have undergone quite a bit of change since the free agency period began. All Pro tight end Jimmy Graham was traded to Seattle in exchange for Pro Bowl center Max Unger and a first-round pick. The Saints also sent guard Ben Grubbs to the Chiefs for a sixth-round pick, signed cornerback Brandon Browner for three years and released linebacker Curtis Lofton.

News sport : Georgia fans raise more than 16K for Georgia assistant after house fire

Nov 2, 2013; Jacksonville, FL, USA; A Georgia Bulldogs helmet sits on the sideline during the first half of the game against the Florida Gators at EverBank Field. (Rob Foldy-USA TODAY Sports) The Georgia football community has rallied around assistant strength and conditioning coach Gus Felder, who lost his home in a fire on Wednesday.

Within 24 hours of the story being reported, a gofundme account set up by the Calvary Bible Church had raised more than $16,000 to get the Felder family back on its feet.

Felder noticed a strange smell in his home around 11 p.m. and found a small fire under his dryer, which was on the second floor of the home he rents. He got his wife and five children out of the house and then went back in to attempt to put the fire out himself. The fire extinguisher didn’t work and Felder called the fire department once the flames consumed the laundry room. Ultimately, the fire destroyed the second floor of the home, including the bedroom three of his children share.

The kids lost clothing and toys, but everyone was safe.

The Felder family is currently staying with fellow strength and conditioning coach John Thomas.

Thomas Settles, pastor of Calvary Bible Church, told AJC.com that the family is doing well.

“They’re comfortable for right now. They’re in a good place,” Settles told the AJC. “They’re hoping to maybe buy a house. They were renting and getting ready to close and purchase that house. Now they hope they can maybe buy another house in the same general area.”

The financial goal on the gofundme page is $40,000.

Felder usually goes to sleep early, but on Wednesday decided to stay up, read and watch a little television. Settles, who is one of Georgia’s team chaplains, told the AJC that had Felder not made that decision, this could have turned into a tragic event.

“On the outside it just looks like smoke damage,” he told the website. “But on the inside, I mean, the kids would have passed away if he hadn’t found out what was happening. It’s amazing that he caught it when he did. If he hadn’t the whole place would have gone up and the kids would have passed away.

“It’s just the grace of God. If we hadn’t have been on spring break, he would’ve had to be up by 5 and would’ve gone to bed very early and then you’d have been dealing with smoke inhalation. Truly the grace of God.”

News sport : Rams trying to build Steel Curtain II, pick up tackle Nick Fairley

It must be nice when you can add talented tackle Nick Fairley as rotation depth on the defensive line.

The St. Louis Rams are banking on a dominant defensive line getting them back to the playoffs. The Rams, who already have Robert Quinn and Chris Long at end and Michael Brockers and Aaron Donald at tackle, signed Fairley. Fairley spent his first four seasons with the Detroit Lions. He was the 13th overall pick of the 2011 NFL draft, meaning each of the Rams' top five defensive linemen was selected in the first half of the first round. The Rams have also signed linebacker Akeem Ayers this offseason, adding to an impressive front seven.

The defensive line madness doesn't help the offensive line or some other areas that the Rams were expected to address in the offseason, but there are worse things to do than build a fantastic defensive line as the foundation of the team.

It's an interesting move by Fairley. He signed a one-year deal with a $5 million base salary and he can make up to $2.5 million more in incentives according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. He will be splitting time with Brockers and Donald, and he presumably could have gone to a team that would have made him a full-time starter. It's also an interesting move by the Rams, investing a lot of money into a player you'd have to consider a luxury, given the rest of their talent on the defensive line.

But one thing is for certain: The Rams' defensive line is going to be scary good.

News sport : Washington QB Cyler Miles taking leave of absence from team

Washington announced Friday that QB Cyler Miles would be taking what was termed a voluntary leave of absence from the team. He won't participate in spring practice.

“Cyler is dealing with some things in his life that are more important than football, and he felt it was important to take some time away from the game,” Washington coach Chris Petersen said in a statement. “We are working to support him in any way we can and hope he returns back to the football field soon.”

Miles was Washington's primary starting QB In 2014 as a sophomore and finished the season 219-329 passing for 2,397 yards, 17 touchdowns and four interceptions. He played in 11 of Washington's 13 games.

One of those games he missed was the season opener against Hawaii. And it's the second straight season that Miles hasn't participated in spring practice for Washington. The lack of spring participation in 2014 and the season-opening suspension stemmed from off-field incidents after the Super Bowl.

While he wasn't ultimately charged, Miles was allegedly involved in two alleged assaults in February with former Washington WR Damore’ea Stringfellow, who had said he was backing up his quarterback in an incident that left a woman unconscious for a short period of time after she was knocked down.

Miles spent the 2013 season backing up Keith Price and got significant playing time in two games late in the year.

Van Gaal stumped by lacklustre Falcao

Manager Louis van Gaal says he has no answers to explain Radamel Falcao's failure to make his mark at Manchester United.

|||

Manchester, England - Louis van Gaal admitted on Friday that he has no answers to explain Radamel Falcao's failure to make his mark at Manchester United.

Falcao's troubled spell with van Gaal's side hit a new low in midweek when he lasted just 71 minutes of an under-21 game against Tottenham, a demotion that was intended to improve the on-loan Monaco striker's fitness and sharpness.

The United manager has refuted suggestions that Falcao's presence with the club's youngsters could be interpreted as an embarrassment for a Colombia international who would cost £43.2 million ($63 million) to sign on a permanent deal from Monaco.

But van Gaal did confess that he cannot explain why Falcao has scored just four times this season and failed to make any sort of impact in the United line-up.

“Falcao didn't play his best match in the second team but he tried to do his utmost best, more I can't ask of players,” van Gaal said at a press conference on Friday.

“I let my players play in the second squad. I have read that it's a 'humiliation' but I don't think so.

“It's a professional attitude, a professional attitude of the manager, of his management of the club but especially also from the player.

“Not only Falcao has played, also (Victor) Valdes, also Rafa da Silva has played. Rafa da Silva played a very good match and scored a wonderful goal and because of that he can grab his confidence again.

“Every player needs match rhythm. We pay a lot for the players so it is normal they play football for us, that is also in the second team.

“He has not reacted like the media have reacted. I have explained already five months ago that every player who doesn't play has to play sometimes, not regularly, but sometimes when we think it's needed to play more minutes in the second team.”

Falcao cost United a £6 million loan fee when he joined last year and commands a reported £265 000-a-week, but while the manager will not give a definitive answer on the player's future, his latest comments - and his bafflement at Falcao's failure - suggest there is little chance of him remaining at Old Trafford beyond this season.

“You never can say that,” said van Gaal when asked to explain Falcao's lack of form.

“We are looking for the solution for him but a lot of aspects you can't control as a manager, nor as a player.

“That's also the beauty of the football world, that you can give fantastic performances in another country but not in the country you are playing in presently.

“This is not the first example and it shall not be the last example. A lot of players need more time to adapt to the new situation, to the new culture, to the higher rhythm of the English game - to a lot of aspects.

“You can easily write 'He can't play football'. But I can't say that and don't want to say that because Falcao, and all the other players, are working very hard and I'm very pleased with their attitude.”

News sport : Rutgers dismisses junior linebacker L.J. Liston

Rutgers linebacker Kevin Snyder (45), L.J. Liston (25) and Darian Dailey (33) celebrate after they defeated Maryland 41-38 in an NCAA college football game, Saturday, Nov. 29, 2014, in College Park, Md. (AP Photo/Nick Wass) Two weeks before Rutgers starts spring practice, head coach Kyle Flood announced that L.J. Liston, a potential starter at linebacker, has been dismissed from the program.

“L.J. is no longer a member of the Rutgers football program,” Flood said in a statement. “He’s currently exploring other options for his career as a student-athlete. We wish him well.”

Liston, who was entering his junior season with the Scarlet Knights, played in 22 career games for the program. Though he played mostly special teams, Liston also made a start at middle linebacker in 2014 and totaled a combined 31 tackles and one tackle for loss in his two seasons.

Though the program didn’t offer a reason for his dismissal, Liston faced disciplinary issues throughout his sophomore year. According to NJ.com, Liston was held out of two practices last summer for failing a conditioning test. He also was suspended for a game “for failing to meet the team’s study hall requirements.” He also reportedly “clashed with linebackers coach Bob Fraser numerous times last season,” per NJ.com.

With Liston out of the picture, junior college transfer Isaiah Johnson and South Carolina grad transfer Kaiwan Lewis are candidates to earn the starting role at middle linebacker.

Coming off an 8-5 2014 season, the Scarlet Knights are scheduled to begin spring practice on March 30.

News sport : Douglas Murray brought to Calgary on tryout

The Calgary Flames seem to be embracing this whole advanced stat outlier thing to a major degree. It’s almost like we’re being trolled by them – mostly with the announcement that Douglas Murray would join the team on a tryout basis. He had played eight games with the Cologne Sharks in Germany.

He’s 6-foot-3, 245 pounds, 35 years old, been out of the league for a year and slow as molasses. But man, can he hit! And boy would he play like Mark Giordano on Calgary’s blueline … not! In Murray’s last fullish season in 2011-12 his SAT relative percentage on the Sharks was a minus-6.9. In 2010-11 he was at mins-2.6. He’s never been a great advanced stat guy, never been a solid offensive player.

But he is enormous … and what an awesome penalty killer.

You can never have too many defensemen in this league, especially if you’re trying to make the playoffs. But weren’t there a few better options than Murray at least to take a look at?

News sport : Ezekiel Elliott endorses petition to change cropped jersey rule

A change.org petition to undo the NCAA's recent rule change to ban cropped jerseys got a visibility boost from college football's most prominent crop top jersey wearer.

Ohio State RB Ezekiel Elliott, who last year tucked his jersey inside his shoulder pads to expose his abs and the pads on his back, retweeted the petition, which now has over 6,000 signatures.

In rule changes announced last week, the NCAA said Elliott and other players couldn't roll up and tuck their jerseys into their pads in 2015. If a player does so, he'll be sent to the sidelines and can't re-enter the game until the jersey is unrolled.

The listed reasoning for the petition is simple, though likely ultimately unconvincing.

Because Ohio State and football fans want to see their players continue to wear the things that have made them beloved by fans worldwide.

While petition movements on change.org have been successful in driving public discussion and showing support for or against something, it's important to reiterate that the existence of a petition doesn't guarantee anything will change. And it's highly, highly doubtful that the NCAA will see 6,000+ signatures on the rule and change it even with Elliott continuing to support it.

News sport : Cowboys reportedly sign RB Darren McFadden

Dec 21, 2014; Oakland, CA, USA; Oakland Raiders running back Darren McFadden (20) runs the ball against the Buffalo Bills in the fourth quarter at O.co Coliseum. The Raiders defeated the Bills 26-24. (Cary Edmondson-USA TODAY Sports) A day after losing star running back DeMarco Murray to the Eagles, the Cowboys may have found his replacement.

According to multiple reports, Darren McFadden is headed to Dallas on a two-year deal that is reportedly worth "up to $5.85 million." The 27-year-old McFadden was a first-round pick of the Raiders in 2008 and has been slowed by injuries for much of his career.

In 2014, McFadden ran for 534 yards and two touchdowns on 3.4 yards per carry while also catching 36 passes for 212 yards while appearing in all 16 games. It was the first time in McFadden’s seven-year career in Oakland that he managed to play in all 16 games.

McFadden’s best season came in 2010 when he ran for 1,157 yards and caught 47 balls for 507 yards in only 13 games in 2010. Aside from that year, McFadden only passed the 700-yard plateau once.

In the past three seasons, McFadden has combined for 1,620 yards and nine touchdowns on just 3.3 yards per carry. He joins a backfield that also features Joseph Randle (51 carries for 343 yards, 3 TDs in 2014) and Lance Dunbar (29 carries, 99 yards)

McFadden is a native of North Little Rock, Ark. and played collegiately at the University of Arkansas, where Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and his son (and Cowboys executive vice president) also played.

With the Cowboys boasting one of the top offensive lines in the NFL, the team hopes McFadden can return to the form he showed from his best years in Oakland.
