News sport : Josh Collmenter stars in strangest dugout interview you'll see this year

It's still only March, but we have no issue at all proclaiming this the strangest and funniest dugout interview that will take place in MLB this season. It's Josh Collmenter talking about being named the Arizona Diamondbacks' opening-day starter. Oh, and he has four arms.

The dugout interview has long been the backdrop of baseball-player hijinks, but here we find Collmenter and teammate Trevor Cahill doing a hilarious two-man routine in which Cahill hides behind Collmenter and acts as his arms.

It's funny enough when Cahill is trying to entertain people watching at home, but even better when he's trying to put water and sunflower seeds in Collmenter's mouth. Collmenter should be commended also for giving legit answers throughout the interview and not just laughing.

That's the type of composure, apparently, the D-backs were looking for in their opening-day starter.

News sport : Will 'fastest hands in MMA' help Joanna Jedrzejczyk win UFC gold?

LAS VEGAS – When Rose Namajunas met Carla Esparza at The Ultimate Fighter 20 finale in December, odds-makers already had Namajunas as a slight favorite to win the season and the inaugural strawweight title that came with it. “Thug Rose” was the betting favorite despite the fact that “The Cookie Monster” was the reigning Invicta FC champion riding a four-fight winning streak.

The hype was heavy for Namajunas. UFC president Dana White referred to her as a ‘female version of Anderson Silva.’ Esparza had different plans, though, and went on to dominate the young challenger en route to a third-round submission, securing UFC gold in the process.

On Saturday, in the co-main event of UFC 185, Esparza makes the first defense of her title against another dangerous striker, Polish prospect Joanna Jedrzejczyk.

Much like Namajunas, Jedrzejczyk is predominantly known for her striking. However, the undefeated challenger will be bringing quite a few more professional fighting credentials when she enters the Octagon in American Airlines Arena in Dallas on Saturday.

Jedrzejczyk is a six-time world Muay Thai champion. By 2012 she had become so dominant in the stand-up realm that she was finding it hard to find opponents.

She was already training at an MMA gym in Poland and her coaches constantly urged her to experiment in jiu-jitsu and wrestling. As professional Muay Thai fights became harder and harder to come by, she eventually gave into her coaches' pleas and began MMA training full-time.

Three years later, she is fighting for a UFC championship.Joanna Jedrzejczyk won a split decision over Claudia Gadelha in December. (USAT)

“In the beginning I thought I was going to do two or three more fights before the title shot,” Jedrzejczyk told Yahoo Sports. “Dana and people from UFC decided [that I would get a title shot], so I’m happy. I had tough fights, tough opponents, so that’s why I’m here. I didn’t get it for free.”

One week before her showdown with Esparza, Jedrzejczyk seemed surprisingly relaxed as she met media inside Robert Drysdale’s Las Vegas jiu-jitsu school. Her feet are calloused and worn, presumably from all the drilling she’s been doing in preparation for Esparza’s ground attacks. Her hair, matted in sweat, is twisted up in a tight bun atop her head.

Word around the gym is, that’s just how she is: “I do not care. It is fine,” is her credo, they say. This applies to not only her appearance, but also her ‘head down,’ almost robotic approach to training.

And it doesn’t take long to figure out how true that statement really is.

“I’m ready for Carla,” she said. “Everyone is talking about it [Esparza’s wrestling] but I do not care. I prepared good. I am complete MMA fighter, not just a striker.”

Just because Jedrzejczyk (8-0) is a ‘head down,’ gritty type of fighter with a reputation for “I do not care” rhetoric doesn’t mean that this moment is lost on her. In fact, the native of Olsztyn, Poland, is well aware that this fight could be a huge boost to the growing MMA scene in her home country.

A win over Esparza (10-2) would make her the first mixed martial arts champion the country has seen, and it would place her alongside boxers like Krzysztof Wlodarczyk, Dariusz Michalczewski and Tomasz Adamek in the annals of Polish fight-sport history.

Drysdale, a renowned jiu-jitsu black belt, is impressed by the toughness of the Poles he's trained with and said Jedrzejczyk fits right in with those hard-nosed athletes.

“I say this all the time, and people think I’m crazy, but I go to Brazil and I never have a hard time with blue belts or purple belts," Drysdale said. "The first time I ever had trouble with a blue belt in my life -- I’m talking, guys giving me a run for my money, making me work – was in Poland.”

Drysdale is not Jedrzejczyk’s full-time coach. But he has known her since 2010 and is a regular to her camps abroad. Jedrzejczyk has been honing her skills for her upcoming co-main event tilt at Drysdale's gym.

Drysdale has more important wins and championships in competitive jiu-jitsu than just about any other grappler in the world. He is also an undefeated UFC light heavyweight who has finished every single one of his seven fights via first-round submission. Drysdale is also one of the most successful trainers on the global circuit, traveling around the world with dizzying regularity.

So, when Drysdale speaks about skill and promise in the sport of mixed martial arts, it demands attention.

“I just have a really hard time believing that [Esparza] will beat her,” Drysdale said. “I have a hard time seeing Joanna lose in that weight class at all honesty; I see her as the Ronda Rousey of the division. I just don’t think anyone can beat her.

“I think Joanna probably has the fastest hands in all of MMA.”

Over the course of his career, Drysdale has trained a who’s who of MMA royalty, including the likes of Randy Couture, Vitor Belfort and Forrest Griffin, but he remains steadfast in his proclamation.

“Vitor Belfort, I think she’s up there in terms of speed. Look at her hit, man,” he said. ”Look at her straight punches; look at how fast they get thrown and come back.”

Joanna Jedrzejczyk (right) gets in Claudia Gadelha's face after their weigh-in. (USAT) He continued, “Her speed is ridiculous. Granted, she is at a lighter weight so that’s to be expected but I truly believe that she’s unusually fast. Her punches are really sharp. She’s in, she’s out; she has excellent footwork. She knows when she’s hurt an opponent; she has plenty of striking experience. And she knows how to bully you without putting herself in danger.”

If bullying is the name of the game, then the Polish slugger best have her wits about her. Because her opponent, Esparza, is about as dominant as it gets in the original art of bullying – wrestling – the likes of which no strawweight has seen up until this point.

Esparza’s run through TUF was highlighted by her grappling and physical dominance. She eliminated top-ranked strawweights Tecia Torres, Jessica Penne and then Namajunas on her way to the title. Whenever she would find herself in a spot of trouble, she used her veteran know-how and sturdy wrestling base to control the action and tilt momentum in her favor.

If MMA has taught us anything over the years, it’s that a strong grappling base can be a fighter’s ticket to MMA immortality.

“She’s a good wrestler, so I expect her to wrestle a lot,” Jedrzejczyk said. “She’s tough. She’s a champion. All respect to her, but I’m going to win.”

Jedrzejczyk made her UFC debut before the champion when she handled Juliana Lima in a unanimous decision at UFC on FOX in July. Her next fight was an upset win over highly touted Brazilian, Claudia Gadelha, in December at a UFC on FOX card, and it earned her the shot at Esparza. So, if actual in-ring UFC time matters, it will be the challenger who will have the advantage in the experience department.

The co-main event at UFC 185 is set to be an experience unto itself. Not only will it serve as the first title defense of Esparza’s newly minted strawweight title, it will also see the challenger attempt to become the first MMA champion from the country of Poland.

And being her country’s first MMA world champion would mean the world to Jedrzejczyk.

“I’m happy, I know I have many people behind me,” she said. “And I going to win this fight for my people, for my country, for my family.”

And, hey, score one for the ladies, too, while you’re at it.

“They didn’t expect that it’s going to be ladies fighting [for a title]," she said. "They thought maybe it was going to be a heavyweight guy, or I don’t know who else. But they are happy, and I can feel how they are supporting. It’s big history, you know.”

Welbeck returns to haunt United

Danny Welbeck claimed revenge for his departure from Manchester United by scoring the winner as Arsenal reached the FA Cup semi-finals with a 2-1 victory.

|||

Danny Welbeck claimed revenge for his departure from Manchester United by scoring the winner as holders Arsenal reached the FA Cup semi-finals with a 2-1 away victory.

The Manchester-born United academy graduate, who joined the club at the age of eight, left in a £16 million ($24.2 million, 22.3 million euros) deal last September after being deemed surplus to requirements by new manager Louis van Gaal.

And he returned to haunt his former club as Arsenal claimed a first victory at Old Trafford since 2006.

Welbeck pounced on a mistake by Antonio Valencia to score a 61st-minute winner after Wayne Rooney had cancelled out Nacho Monreal's opener, and United's evening ended in ignominy when Angel di Maria was sent off after receiving a second yellow card for manhandling referee Michael Oliver.

United's wait for FA Cup success will now stretch into a 12th year and their sole objective is now the race for Champions League qualification, in which they currently trail Arsenal by a point.

With Jonny Evans beginning a six-game ban for spitting at Newcastle United's Papiss Cisse, Luke Shaw came into the United defence, but although that was the only change to the hosts' line-up, they displayed uncertainty from the off.

Van Gaal again played Marouane Fellaini in support of Rooney and the Belgian illustrated his unique strengths by chesting down a flighted pass from Di Maria and teeing up Ashley Young, who shot over.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain started on the right for Arsenal, with Mesut Ozil in the centre, and in the 26th minute the England midfielder marked his return to the starting XI by creating the opening goal.

Having earlier been granted the space to put a cross-shot wide, Oxlade-Chamberlain wriggled between Daley Blind, Shaw and Valencia before stabbing a pass to Monreal, who beat David de Gea at his near post.

United's fans were quick to voice their annoyance, but they were off their feet just three minutes later when Rooney met Di Maria's right-wing cross with a fine diving header to claim his 14th goal against Arsenal.

Encouraged, United finished the first half strongly, with visiting goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny saving from Rooney, Di Maria and Fellaini, although Santi Cazorla worked De Gea with a free-kick at the other end.

United made two changes at half-time, introducing Phil Jones and Michael Carrick for Shaw and Ander Herrera, while Oxlade-Chamberlain had to hobble off five minutes in after appearing to injure his hamstring, with Aaron Ramsey coming on.

There were half-chances for both teams, De Gea saving a deflected Alexis Sanchez shot and Di Maria shooting wide, before Valencia's blunder allowed Welbeck to put Arsenal ahead.

United's supporters have bemoaned their team's predilection for back-passes in recent weeks and it was from such an action that the goal stemmed, with Welbeck seizing on Valencia's under-cooked pass, touching the ball past the onrushing De Gea, and rolling home.

There was no muted celebration either, with the former Stretford End favourite clenching his fists in a clear show of delight.

Smalling should have equalised when he blazed Carrick's flick over the bar from six yards, while Fellaini tested Szczesny with a header, but it took a stunning De Gea save to prevent Cazorla swelling Arsenal's lead.

Di Maria saw red with 13 minutes to play when he was booked for diving and responded by tugging Oliver's shirt, completing a miserable night for United.– AFP

FA to probe Villa pitch invasion

The Football Association has started a probe into the pitch invasions that marred Aston Villa's FA Cup quarter-final victory over West Bromwich Albion.

|||

The Football Association has started a probe into the pitch invasions that marred Aston Villa's FA Cup quarter-final victory over West Bromwich Albion on Saturday.

Play was halted by a pitch invasion by celebrating Villa fans in the closing minutes of their team's 2-0 win over their local rivals at Villa Park.

Hundreds of Villa supporters then streamed on to the pitch in an even larger invasion at the final whistle and seats were thrown from the end housing West Brom fans.

An FA statement released on Monday said: “The FA has contacted both Aston Villa and West Bromwich Albion to request their observations in relation to the disturbing crowd incidents which occurred during and after their FA Cup quarter-final tie on March 7, 2015.

“As well as liaising with both clubs, the FA is working closely with West Midlands Police and notes that a number of arrests have already been made.

“All available video footage will be studied by the relevant parties to identify anyone who has committed a disorder offence inside the stadium and ensure they face the appropriate punishment.

“Whilst its investigation continues, the FA will make no further comment.”

The FA's statement came after the national lead officer for football policing questioned the scheduling of the high-profile derby clash at 17:30 GMT on a Saturday evening.

West Midlands Police made 17 arrests related to the game and are seeking witnesses to a disturbance at the Witton Arms pub before the match.

Meanwhile, Albion midfielder Chris Brunt has been hit with an FA charge after a row with a match official in the tunnel following his team's defeat.

Brunt, 30, faces reprimands for using abusive and/or insulting words and/or behaviour towards a match official in or around the tunnel area.

He has until 1800 GMT on March 12 to respond to the charge. – AFP

Eto'o honoured for anti-racism work

Football star Samuel Eto'o's inspiring stand against racism won him an award, as the European Council warned that prejudice still stalked the game in Europe.

|||

Football star Samuel Eto'o's inspiring stand against racism won him an award, as the European Council warned that prejudice still stalked the game in Europe.

The former Cameroon and Barcelona striker was to receive the Medal of Tolerance from the European Council at a Tolerance and Reconciliation gala dinner in London's Kensington Palace, the home of Britain's Prince William and his wife Kate.

Eto'o, 33, who now plays with Sampdoria in Italy, famously tried to walk off the pitch during a Spanish match due to the racist abuse he was suffering.

“The last year has been a particularly challenging one for football in terms of hate and racism,” the four-time African Player of the Year said in a statement.

“As players, we need to take a moral stand because we are the people the spectators watch and we have to be a strong example of tolerance in a multi-racial society which I believe football can represent best.

The ECTR is a non-governmental organisation founded in 2008 which promotes understanding between communities and monitors xenophobia in Europe and counts former presidents and prime ministers among its council members.

Eto'o started out with Real Madrid but made his name with Barcelona, before moving on to Inter Milan, Chelsea and Everton.

In 2005 while playing for Barcelona, Eto'o was heavily racially abused by Real Zaragoza fans, who made monkey chants whenever he touched the ball.

The following year, when again being abused by Zaragoza supporters, Eto'o tried to walk off the pitch, telling the referee he could not continue, before his team-mates persuaded him to complete the match.

“It is important at this worrying time to send a clear message that racism has no home in football,” said ECTR head Moshe Kantor, the president of the European Jewish Congress.

“As we have witnessed recently with the actions of Chelsea and West Ham fans... racism and anti-semitism are still very much alive and well in football.

Eto'o has won the Champions League three times, four domestic championships and the Club World Cup.

Now retired from international football, he is Cameroon's top goalscorer with 56 from 118 caps, and has won the Africa Cup of Nations twice as well as an Olympic gold medal.

The ECTR's first Medal of Tolerance was conferred in 2010 on king Juan Carlos I of Spain, with the second given jointly to Croatian president Ivo Josipovic and former Serbian president Boris Tadic. – AFP

News sport : New crowdfunding site wants you to pay players to stay in school

Oregon's Marcus Mariota throws during the first half of the NCAA college football playoff championship game against Ohio State Monday, Jan. 12, 2015, in Arlington, Texas. (AP Photo/David J. Phillip) A new website is inviting college fans to pay their favorite players to stay in school.

Yes, you read that right.

Capitalizing on the crowdfunding fad that has been used for everything from medical bills to movie projects, FanAngel is a new site that allows fans to donate money to their favorite athlete in an effort to get them to stay for an extra year before turning pro.

Site creator Shawn Fojtik explained to ESPN.com how the whole thing works:

Fojtik said that when a fan commits a pledge to an athlete, that money is immediately taken out of the account. Eighty percent of the money will be held for that athlete if that athlete does choose to stay in school, 10 percent will be given to that athlete's teammates, and 10 percent will be earmarked for charity and scholarship funds. The money is given to the athlete when that athlete's eligibility expires.

FanAngel, Fojtik said, takes a 9 percent fee for organizing the transaction. If the athlete does not stay in school, the money will be refunded.

Forget the fact that all of those numbers add up to 109 percent, how is this OK with the NCAA? Well, Fojtik seems to have an answer for that, too.

"There's no acceptance on the athlete's part, and we aren't specifically promoting any athletes," he said. "We are using their name as anyone would as part of fair use."

Count us in the camp that thinks this sounds a little fishy and ripe for an NCAA rules committee audit. Are fans really going to be able to raise the millions of dollars needed to keep a player on campus for an extra year? Doubtful. And even if they did, would a player stay and risk getting injured? Probably not.

Sorry fans, college athletes might love you, but they’re not in love with you.

I am really curious how many fans out there would pay money out of their pocket to keep their favorite player on campus for an extra year with no guarantee of a real return? Both Marcus Mariota and Brett Hundley returned after last season and neither brought their team a national title. Would you have paid for that outcome?

So please, if this is something in which you would actually participate, drop me an email and explain your reasoning. I might use your email in an upcoming post. Because to me, this sounds absolutely ridiculous.

News sport : The new guy: Chris Cwik joins Big League Stew

Chris Cwik joins Big League Stew Spring training is a time for new beginnings. After an offseason of movement, players are finally able to report to camp and meet their new teammates. In order to keep track of his new teammates, Braves closer Craig Kimbrel handed out shirts to his teammates, which read, “Hello, my name is ____.

Hopefully, this won’t be as difficult.

Hello, my name is Chris Cwik (pronounced Swick), and I’m the new guy here at Big League Stew. For those of you who are familiar with my work, great! For those of you who aren’t, here are 10 things you should know about me.

1. I grew up on the south side of Chicago, and identify myself as a White Sox fan. I think retaining an element of fandom is important, provided that writer can still remain objective about his rooting interests. I like the moves the White Sox made this offseason, but I’m not sure I’m picking them to make the playoffs. I’ve also worked for both the Washington Nationals and Milwaukee Brewers (in their Broadcasting Departments), so I will occasionally root for those teams. The Nationals have overtaken the Brewers in that regard, so I find myself watching a fair amount of Nats game during the season.

2. I’m a believer in advanced stats. My first writing gig was at FanGraphs, and I contributed to the most recent Baseball Prospectus Annual. I've also written for CBSSports.com. I know what FIP, WAR and wRC+ can do, and I’m not afraid to use them. That said, I won’t bombard you with complicated formulas and stats all the time. The truth is, every organization is using this stuff, and I think that’s a clear sign that it matters. If you aren’t on board with advanced stats, I look forward to our fruitful discussions in the comments.

3. I’ve been to 10 different ballparks, and I think Fenway Park was my favorite. Both PNC Park and AT&T Park would be near the top of my list as well. I’m not a big fan of U.S. Cellular Field. There’s just nothing special about it.

4. The best pitching performance I’ve seen in person was a Cliff Lee start from April 2011. Lee tossed a complete game, striking out 12 Nationals. The most impressive thing about it was the fact that Lee didn’t break out his curve until the sixth inning. As you can see in the video, Lee was already off to a dominant start, using his fastball and cutter for strikeouts early. All of a sudden, he unleashed his curveball in the sixth inning, and picked up four strikeouts with the pitch. It was as if he was toying with the Nationals early, and then finally decided to bring out another weapon after they were already beaten down. It was dominant.

5. Frank Thomas is my favorite player of all-time. One of my favorite pieces of memorabilia is a Frank Thomas plaque I bought at a game in the early '90s. For whatever reason, I’ve held on to it all these years. In the picture, Thomas is in space, hitting a baseball meteor with the Earth as his backdrop. The '90s were strange.

6. "MVP Baseball '05" is the best baseball game of all-time. I will not be convinced that anything else is better. I know there are staunch supporters of "R.B.I. Baseball" and probably "The Show," but it’s tough for me to get better than MVP. How many of you changed John Dowd’s name to Barry Bonds?

7. I attended the Home Run Derby back in 2003. Garrett Anderson won, which seems strange in retrospect. Albert Pujols nearly tied him in the final round, but missed a home run by inches with one of his final outs. Prior to the game, I nearly caught a batting practice home run from Carl Everett, but was too afraid to go after it with my bare hands. Aside from spring training, that’s the closest I’ve come to catching a ball at a game.

8. My first baseball memory was seeing Bo Jackson break a bat over his knee while attending a game. Since it was my first game, I just assumed players did that all the time. I had no idea how unique Jackson was in that regard. I was never able to fully appreciate his athleticism back then, so I’m thankful the internet has a vast collection of clips.

9. I have a large number of bobbleheads, mostly from when I worked for the Nationals. I’ve also acquired some less-than-exciting ones over the past couple of years, including a Tom Gorzelanny Pirates bobble and a Jeff Suppan Brewers bobble. I also own all of the Racing Presidents, except Taft.

(Getty Images)

10. Speaking of the Racing Presidents, I once was able to dress up as Abe. I did not participate in a race, though. I think it was just for a behind-the-scenes video. The costumes are pretty heavy. I think I was told the heads weighs about 40 pounds, all of which goes straight onto your shoulders. I can’t imagine what it’s like to run in those things.

If you are still interested in being my friend after all that, you can follow me on Twitter @Chris_Cwik. I’ve also created a FaceBook page, which can be found here.

Now that introductions are out of the way, it’s time to go out and prove I’m in the best writing shape of my life.

News sport : Potential landing spots for former Texans WR Andre Johnson

After being released by the Houston Texans on Monday, Andre Johnson immediately became one of the best free agent wide receivers on the open market.

The 33-year-old Johnson is coming off an 85-catch season but was reportedly told by head coach Bill O’Brien that he’d see a reduced role in the Texans’ offense moving forward.

His 1,102 catches for 13,597 rank him second among all active receivers behind fellow free agent Reggie Wayne. Johnson will certainly have his fair share of suitors for his services.

Here are some teams who could be potential landing spots for Johnson:

Seattle Seahawks

In Johnson’s 12 years in Houston, the Texans only reached the playoffs only two times. He’ll want to play for a winner at this point in his career and Seattle, coming off back-to-back Super Bowl appearances, could be that team. Russell Wilson has never had a true go-to target since being drafted. At 6-foot-3 and 230 pounds, Johnson could be that guy.

Philadelphia Eagles

With Jeremy Maclin heading to Kansas City to play under former Eagles coach Andy Reid and DeSean Jackson long gone, Philly suddenly has a huge void at wideout. Sure, Jordan Matthews had a nice rookie season, but beyond Matthews is never-open Riley Cooper and slot guy Josh Huff. Bringing in a steady target like Johnson makes sense.

New England Patriots

How does a Julian Edelman, Andre Johnson and Brandon LaFell trio sound? Adding a physical receiver with size like Johnson to play opposite LaFell with Edelman in the slot would certainly put fear in the hearts of AFC East defensive coordinators. Oh, and that goes without mentioning a guy named Rob Gronkowski at tight end. I assume Tom Brady would approve.

Indianapolis Colts

The Colts opted not to re-sign Reggie Wayne, but could trade one veteran receiver for another if Johnson were to come aboard. He could provide an excellent complement to the speedy T.Y. Hilton for Andrew Luck. Johnson is certainly familiar with the AFC South, but would Indianapolis bring in another veteran at the expense of giving second-year wideout Donte Moncrief an expanded role in the offense?

Miami Dolphins

Brian Hartline and Brandon Gibson won’t be back and Mike Wallace’s future with the team is a big question mark, so Miami could use some help at wideout. While Jarvis Landry, who is entering his second season as a pro, has a promising future, Ryan Tannehill could use another target to take the pressure off the youngster. Johnson, who played collegiately at Miami, would make sense.

Carolina Panthers

Cam Newton and Kelvin Benjamin could use some help. Adding a veteran like Johnson would be an obvious upgrade for the Panthers’ passing game and a boon for Benjamin’s development. The Panthers already locked up Greg Olsen at tight end, but are still severely lacking depth at wide receiver. Going after Johnson is a no-brainer.

San Diego Chargers

Keenan Allen never really took that next step forward like the Chargers hoped he would last season. Though Allen (77 catches, 783 yards, 4 TDs) and Malcom Floyd (52 catches, 856 yards, 6 TDs) are still around, adding Johnson would give Philip Rivers just another weapon to throw the ball and ease the loss of Eddie Royal (62 catches, 778 yards, 7 TDs) to free agency.

Cleveland Browns

With Josh Gordon suspended again, new quarterback acquisition Josh McCown needs someone to throw the ball to besides 5-foot-7 Andrew Hawkins. If Johnson signed with Cleveland, he’d immediately become the best receiver on the roster. It’d be a major coup for Ray Farmer, but would Johnson be interested?

News sport : Free agency gets more interesting as Darrelle Revis can hit market

Darrelle Revis' contract last year was structured in a way by the New England Patriots that made it clear he'd be with the team one year, then dumped before a massive option was due.

Still, the way Revis impacted the Patriots during their Super Bowl championship season made picking up the $20 million option seem like a possibility. But the Patriots decided against it, declining to pick up the option and making Revis a free agent, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

That doesn't mean Revis can't come back to the Patriots. The team has reportedly been trying to lock up Revis to a long-term extension, and those talks surely will continue. But there are many other teams with a lot of cap room and no free agent on the market anywhere near Revis' level (if we believe all the reports about imminent signings to be factual), so the chase might get pretty interesting.

If Revis isn't the best cornerback in the game, he's on a short list. This past season he was named first-team All-Pro for the fourth time, and seems on his way to the Pro Football Hall of Fame when he's done. That's why picking up the $20 million option had to at least cross New England's mind. That's why a team like the Raiders with oodles of salary-cap space and nobody great to spend it on might consider a mega-deal that would be in the range of the enormous deals J.J. Watt and Ndamukong Suh have or will sign.

All of the leaked deals have taken a lot of the drama out of free agency. But now there's one truly elite free agent who hasn't been spoken for.

News sport : Ole Miss QB Chad Kelly completes community service

Mississippi football coach Hugh Freeze, second from right, speaks with players quarterback Chad Kelly, left, defensive ends Channing Ward, second from left, Fadol Brown, center, as former Mississippi quarterback Bo Wallace listens in during Pro Day at Mississippi in Oxford, Miss., Thursday, March 5, 2015. The event showcases players for the upcoming NFL football draft. (AP Photo/Rogelio V. Solis) Nearly three months after being arrested for fighting with bouncers outside of a Buffalo nightclub, Ole Miss quarterback Chad Kelly met the requirements of his plea agreement.

According to the Associated Press, Kelly performed 50 hours of community service and underwent a “drug and alcohol evaluation” after being charged with disorderly conduct for the Dec. 21 incident.

“This case is over,” said Thomas Eoannou, Kelly’s attorney. “It is behind him as of right now and he’s looking forward to playing football.”

Kelly’s arrest came less than a week after he signed a national letter of intent to play for Ole Miss. Kelly was originally facing much more serious charges, including resisting arrest, third-degree assault and second-degree harassment. Per the AP, Kelly, 20, sent the Buffalo PD a written apology following the incident.

Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze was originally on the fence about allowing Kelly to remain with the program, but ultimately allowed him to enroll at the school.

Kelly started his career at Clemson before being dismissed by head coach Dabo Swinney for “conduct detrimental to the program” and having a “pattern of behavior that is not consistent with the value’s of (Clemson’s) program.” Following his dismissal, Kelly transferred to East Mississippi Community College and led the program to the junior college national championship in 2014. In his lone season at EMCC, Kelly threw for 3,905 yards and 47 touchdowns.

Kelly, who is currently on a volunteer mission in Haiti with Freeze, is expected to compete for the Rebels’ starting quarterback job.

News sport : Report: Knicks 'considering their options' with trading their first-round pick

Phil Jackson watches Kentucky vs. Arkansas and contemplates the future. (Andy Lyons/Getty Images) As the New York Knicks circle the drain in a lost season, there are precious few things about which Knicks fans can really get excited. At the top of that list, of course, is the fact that the Knicks own their own first-round pick in the 2015 NBA draft, which — if New York finishes with the worst record in the NBA, which they've got at the moment, entering Monday's action with an NBA-worst 12-49 record — would stand a 25 percent chance of landing at No. 1 overall, and would be guaranteed to fall within the top four of June's lottery, marking the franchise's first top-five selection since 1986.

Pick preferences vary among Knicks fans. Some supporters liking the scoring acumen and passing ability of Duke's Jahlil Okafor. Others favor the more balanced (and perhaps higher-ceilinged) two-way explosiveness of Kentucky's Karl-Anthony Towns. Those looking for a backcourt difference-maker might opt for Ohio State dime-dropper D'Angelo Russell or China-by-way-of-SMU penetrator Emmanuel Mudiay. Whichever way your tastes run, there are intriguing options who could give the Knicks the sort of infusion of young, likely-to-improve, cost-effective talent that could help a post-shutdown and (hopefully) healthy Carmelo Anthony return the Knicks to respectability and competition.

There is, however, another option that's apparently up for consideration in the Knicks front office. From Ian Begley of ESPN New York:

In an interview on ESPN New York's "The Robin Lundberg Show," ESPN NBA reporter Brian Windhorst said the Knicks are at the very least considering their options when it comes to trading their first-round pick.

Specifically, Windhorst said the Knicks are looking into "opportunities" to see "what they could possibly get if they trade their draft pick."

Of course, it's wise for Phil Jackson and the Knicks to at least gauge the market for the pick.

The trade market for their selection won't really materialize until New York finds out where it picks. That will happen in late May after the NBA's draft lottery.

Then, New York will have a clearer idea of what it can get back in a trade of the pick.

To be clear, the Knicks can't trade their 2015 first-rounder yet because they've already traded their 2016 first-rounder. Actually, they've technically traded it twice — they gave the Denver Nuggets the rights to swap '16 first-rounders with them as part of the trade that imported 'Melo back in 2011, and they later traded whichever pick they would have ended up with in that arrangement to the Toronto Raptors in the deal that brought Andrea Bargnani to Manhattan. So if the Knicks wind up with a higher draft pick than the Nuggets next year, Denver can take New York's spot; if the Nuggets are worse than the Knicks, Denver can stand pat; and no matter what, the worse of the two picks will go to Toronto, leaving the Knicks empty-handed.

The so-called "Stepien rule" prevents teams from trading first-round draft picks in consecutive drafts. It does not, however, prevent teams from making a selection and then shipping out the pick after the draft, perhaps in exchange for a more established veteran talent or two to pair with the 31-year-old Anthony in a move that aims to propel the Knicks back into contention in the short term rather than waiting for a teen prospect like Okafor, Towns, Russell or Mudiay to develop into a seasoned pro.

On one hand, it's not unreasonable for Jackson and company to open themselves up to all avenues of improving a roster that is staggeringly short on foundational, or even solidly NBA-level, talent. On the other, you can forgive Knicks fans who have lived through so many future-for-present deals over the past couple of decades for feeling queasy about continuing the franchise's history of draft-deal violence by dealing away the team's latest chance at developing an in-house, farm-to-table star for the first time since Patrick Ewing.

For all the talk about the organization turning over a new leaf, taking a fresh approach and looking at things with fresh eyes under Jackson's leadership, trading away a top-five-drafted 19-year-old in exchange for more immediate help would bring back bad, bad memories of the aftertaste of deals that turned Nene into a soon-to-be-injured Antonio McDyess, choices that would become Joakim Noah and LaMarcus Aldridge into Eddy Curry and Wilson Chandler, and the pick that later landed Gordon Hayward into Stephon Marbury. (Ditto, of course, for taking a dozen games of what Marv Albert would call "extended garbajj time" games without 'Melo as evidence enough that Bargnani's worth bringing back after the season, as the New York Post's Marc Berman reports Jackson might be doing.)

It's not Jackson's fault that prior regimes have made dire, franchise-harming, penny-and-pound-foolish decisions in the past, but if the Knicks are to undergo the sort of rebuild that his predecessors have so determinedly avoided in years past, it would seem to need to start with not only an infusion of new blood and fresh skill, but also a commitment to allowing such a player to learn from his mistakes and develop at his own pace. And if New York's going to once again choose not to follow that blueprint, they're going to need to get something staggering back in exchange for that draft pick.

It feels unlikely that such a no-doubt bounty will be available, just as it feels unlikely that the Knicks are going to be able to land the likes of Kevin Durant or Marc Gasol with their scads of available free-agent cash this summer. That said, it's early, and all it takes is one miracle to change the course of a club for the foreseeable future.

Perhaps Jackson will be able to convince another front-office to cough up a Godfather offer for the rights to one of the draft's top prospects, using all of noted prince James Dolan's money to land the sort of two-way talents who can help the Knicks vault out of the bottom-third in the league in both offensive and defensive efficiency. If he can't, though — if this summer amounts to little more than another short-sighted later-for-now swap and an inability to get the right types of talents to take Dolan's cash — then it's unlikely that we'll be any closer to an end to the basketball-gods-angering agita that's been on display at Madison Square Garden this season.

News sport : Four-star recruit Jean Delance decommits from Oklahoma following racist video

Oklahoma football might already be feeling effects of the racial chant that caused a fraternity to be banned from campus.

Four-star offensive line recruit Jean Delance announced Monday he was decommiting from the Sooners and reopening his recruitment.

Delance originally committed to the Sooners in November, but has seen his stock rise in recent months and several more offers from FBS programs have rolled in. Texas and Texas A&M are considered the frontrunners for the Mesquite, Texas product.

It’s no coincidence that Delance’s decommitment for “personal reasons” came a day after a video surfaced that depicted an Oklahoma fraternity participating in a racial chant. That fraternity was banned from campus on Monday amid protests, which included several football players and coach Bob Stoops.

Bob Przybylo tweeted that he spoke to Delance, who said the video played a role in the decision.

A day before the video was posted to the Internet, Delance posted a couple pictures from a trip to Oklahoma, including a shot of him, his mother and Stoops.

However, Delance noted to SoonerScoop.com that Oklahoma coaches asked if he was still committed after he expressed interest in visiting other schools. Delance said he reaffirmed his commitment to Stoops and assistants Lincoln Riley and Bill Bedenbaugh.

While the football team showed solidarity in standing up against the racist incident and the swift action by Oklahoma president David Boren to disband the fraternity was commendable, it’s clear the football program is going to have to do some major damage control to separate the university from a rogue group of students.

News sport : Steven Jackson launches funny 'Save the Running Back' campaign (Video)

Running backs just aren’t valued in the NFL like they used to be. Following his release from the Atlanta Falcons, three-time pro-bowler Steven Jackson is out to change that.

Jackson, who currently sits at 16th all-time in rushing yards, launched a hilarious “Save the Running Back” campaign where he pleads to save the every-down running back. Here, I’ll let Jackson explain what it's all about:

The Save the Running Back website even encourages you to write to your favorite team and spread the message:

Dear Team Representative,

I am writing you on behalf of SaveTheRunningBack.org, an organization founded by Pro Bowl running back Steven Jackson, to express my dissatisfaction with the way that running backs are being treated in professional football today.

Running backs aren't all the same. They're not interchangeable. I yearn for the days of yesteryear, when players like Walter Payton, Barry Sanders, and Emmitt Smith were allowed to run free. The NFL was built on the carries of men like them.

Please value the running back position in the way that it was meant to be valued. Because when we do, everybody wins. Learn more at http://ift.tt/1NB1Gss.

You can also purchase official Save the Running Back gear. Proceeds from each purchase go to the Steven Jackson Foundation, which, according to its website, is dedicated to “promoting strong educational values and healthy living among today’s youth.”

Overall, it’s a funny way for Jackson to get his name and foundation out there while he searches for a new team to play for in 2015. The 31-year-old Jackson ran for 707 yards for the Falcons in 2014, the third-lowest total in his 11-year career.

News sport : Oklahoma State QB Daxx Garman decides to transfer

Nov 1, 2014; Manhattan, KS, USA; Oklahoma State Cowboys quarterback Daxx Garman (12) drops back to pass during a 48-14 loss to the Kansas State Wildcats at Bill Snyder Family Stadium. (Scott Sewell-USA TODAY Sports) Oklahoma State quarterback Daxx Garman has decided to transfer.

Coach Mike Gundy announced the move Monday, stating that he didn’t know where Garman was going to land, but that he appreciated his efforts while he was a Cowboy.

Last week, Gundy told Fox Sports Southwest that he had given Garman until Monday to decide whether to stay with the team or leave. Rumors have been swirling about Garman’s departure since the season ended and Gundy named Mason Rudolph the starter.

Gundy reiterated Monday that Rudolph would be the starter this spring followed by J.W. Walsh as the main backup.

Garman started eight games in 2014 after Walsh suffered a season-ending foot injury on Sept. 6. He completed 152-of-277 passes for 12 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, but suffered a head injury against Texas on Nov. 15 and was replaced by Rudolph.

Garman already transferred from Arizona to Oklahoma State in 2012, but will graduate from Oklahoma State in May making him immediately eligible to play at another FBS program.

News sport : Someone has drawn up a 'Pray 4 Rose' mural in Chicago, as Derrick Rose recovers

This, via the kind folk at Reddit, is what recently went up underneath Chicago’s semi-famed Fullerton Underpass:

(Via Reddit.)

[DraftKings: FREE Entry to a Huge Cash Fantasy Basketball Contest with First Deposit. Draft your team now.]

I think we can all agree that this is a little over the top.

Derrick Rose recently underwent surgery to repair a re-torn meniscus, as many NBA players have done over the last few years. The brilliant Russell Westbrook, in fact, has undergone two follow-up surgeries in the wake of the torn meniscus he suffered during the 2013 NBA playoffs. It’s true that bad luck and the timing of Rose’s injuries has made it so that he essentially had to skip out two NBA seasons, but he will likely be back this NBA season and at full strength sometime in the summer.

Derrick Rose is not a martyr, he does not deserve a crown of thorns, and he has not passed away. He also doesn’t even need crutches, as Rose walked out of his most recent surgery on his own.

Chicago is home to alarming strains of gun violence, as both Rose and teammate Joakim Noah have discussed repeatedly, with Noah even producing a documentary pitched to help draw attention to and possibly curb what feels like an unending stream of senseless deaths:

It’s just fine for some apparently well-meaning artists to have a little fun, fun drawn up at the same site as the Virgin Mary stain from a decade ago, and the layout of the shrine is impressive.

It’s also a little tone deaf, considering what is going on a little further south in Derrick Rose’s hometown. He probably would like the prayers sent elsewhere, if you wouldn’t mind.
