Suarez shines as Barca beat City

Manchester City suffered from deja vu as Luis Suarez's double gave Barcelona a 2-1 first leg lead in a Champions League last 16 tie at the Etihad.

Manchester - Manchester City suffered from deja vu as Luis Suarez's double gave Barcelona a 2-1 first leg lead in a Champions League last 16 tie at the Etihad although Lionel Messi's late penalty miss left the door ajar on Tuesday.

In a repeat of last season's round of 16 first leg at the Etihad, Barcelona were too slick for the hosts in a mesmerising opening period with Uruguay forward Suarez firing them in front in the 16th minute and doubling the lead after half an hour.

Sergio Aguero rewarded City for a vastly improved second half showing with a clinical strike 20 minutes from time.

But with City down to 10 men after Gael Clichy's red card for a second booking, the majestic Messi had the chance to restore Barcelona's two-goal lead but his penalty was saved by Joe Hart and the Argentine headed the rebound wide.

“We are very happy with the result and even if it was 3-1 the tie would still be open,” Barca coach Luis Enrique said.

City midfielder Samir Nasri said in the build-up that while Messi played football from a different galaxy, the rest of Barca's squad shared the same planet as City's.

It did not look like it in a horribly one-sided first half in which Barcelona's entire ensemble were light years ahead in speed and movement.

Messi, rejuvenated since his reported spat with manager Luis Enrique at the start of the year, was at the heart of Barca's rapier thrusts.

But it was Suarez, whose goals, bites and misplaced words made his time at Liverpool nothing if not compelling, who returned to cast his spell over English football.

It was his brace for Uruguay in June that all but banished England from the World Cup and this time his predatory instincts left City staring at another early exit from Europe.

In the 16th minute Messi's ball in hit City skipper Vincent Kompany on the back and dropped at the feet of Suarez to drill a low shot past the stranded Hart.

The England keeper must be sick of the sight of Suarez and he was beaten again after 30 minutes when Messi mesmerised countryman Pablo Zabaleta and dinked a pass to Jordi Alba whose low cross was touched in by the sliding Uruguayan.

Dani Alvez clipped the crossbar before the halftime whistle offered stunned City a few minutes to clear their heads.

However, Barca were caught snoozing at the start of the second half and Javier Mascherano had to make a superb tackle to deny Nasri before unmarked City striker Edin Dzeko headed straight at Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

City's endeavour was rewarded when Aguero, whose hat-trick against Bayern Munich in the group stage helped City mount a great escape into the last 16, clipped a shot past ter Stegen after brilliant work from David Silva.

With Clichy off for a second booking, Messi earned a last-gasp penalty when he was bundled over by Zabaleta but his effort was saved by Hart and the Argentine then missed an open goal with a diving header from the rebound to leave City alive. – Reuters

News sport : Derrick Rose to undergo surgery for torn medial meniscus in right knee

CHICAGO, IL - FEBRUARY 23: Derrick Rose #1 of the Chicago Bulls leaps to pass over O.J. Mayo #00 of the Milwaukee Bucks at the United Center on February 23, 2015 in Chicago, Illinois. The Bulls defeated the Bucks 87-71. NOTE TO USER: User expressly acknowledges and agrees that, by downloading and or using this photograph, User is consenting to the terms and conditions of the Getty Images License Agreement. (Photo by Jonathan Daniel/Getty Images) Derrick Rose is set to undergo serious knee surgery for the third time in three years. The Chicago Bulls announced Tuesday night that the star point guard and 2011 MVP will undergo surgery to repair the medial meniscus in his right knee. A timetable has not been set, but it is possible that Rose will miss the rest of the 2014-15 NBA season. According to reports, Rose told team officials of the pain at practice Tuesday.

The news follows a string of unfortunate knee injuries for Rose, one of the league's most popular players. Rose suffered a tear to the meniscus in his right knee just 10 games into the 2013-14 season and missed the remainder of the campaign. That injury came roughly 18 months after tearing the ACL in his left knee in the first game of the 2011-12 playoffs that kept him out of that postseason and the full 2012-13 season.

Rose returned to action in 2014-15 and impressed with regularity in his 46 games prior to this announcement. While he had missed games intermittently due to various ailments, the 26-year-old Chicago native had appeared to be in reasonably good health and remained a key part of the Bulls' hopes of title contention.

News sport : Steve Nash hilariously tells a Twitter troll to either watch his mouth 'or Temecula'

Nearly-retired Los Angeles Lakers point guard Steve Nash emerged from a bit of a Twitter hibernation to live-tweet the Barcelona/Man City match on Tuesday. Because Nash is a public figure, a Laker, and someone who has ticked off Laker fans by refusing to retire, he also took in quite a few nasty Twitter responses while chatting up the soccer match.

The one that sparked Nash’s ire the most? Well, we can’t exactly embed here, due to its (typically) awful language. What we can do is embed a few other messages that this Laker fan sent the future Basketball Hall of Famer:

We also can’t embed Steve Nash’s fantastic response, as it quotes that initial burst of awful language, but we can quote Steve’s challenge to “Dean the Mad King.” It reads like this:

“I'm the hardest 41 yr old you know Brodie. Watch your mouth or temecula”

The ‘Temecula’ reference, for those of you just hopping on board now, is two months old:

If you’ll recall, on Christmas another tough-guy Laker fan challenged someone on Twitter to a fight because that person dared call out Kobe Bryant’s less-than-stellar shooting season with Los Angeles. The critic duped the Laker fan into driving 35 minutes to Temecula, CA for a fight that would never take place. The critic/duper/would-be pugilist, now beside himself with laughter, was hundreds of miles in Arizona celebrating Christmas with his family.

We have no idea where Steve Nash’s current whereabouts are. What we do know is that Nash’s tweet – already re-tweeted thousands of times – just about chased his potty-mouthed foil off of Twitter dot com for a little while …

… which is probably a good thing for all involved.

Nash angered the same Laker fans that swooned over his arrival in 2012 …

… by refusing to retire last year. His retirement would have cleared nearly $10 million off of the Lakers’ salary cap last season, but as the 2014 offseason proved; great players wanted nothing to do with signing with the Lakers in spite of all that cap space.

Of course, that hasn’t stopped some dumb Laker fans from saying dumb things to Nash via Twitter or his Instagram page, forcing Nash (who rightfully isn’t going to walk away from $9.7 million) to pen a letter to those dumb fans on Facebook last fall. Lakers Nation is full of intelligent, mindful basketball-fiends who are both rife with tact and hoop knowledge, but because the breadth of the team’s fandom is so significant there are always going to be a few or ten thousand dumb ones that just don’t get it.

Anonymously. On the internet.

On Tuesday, Steve Nash let one of those dumb-dumbs have it. You know where to find him.

News sport : David Ragan to drive No. 18 in place of Kyle Busch

David Ragan will fill in at Atlanta and beyond for Kyle Busch in the No. 18 for Joe Gibbs Racing.

Ragan emerged as a candidate for the car on Tuesday. According to the team's release, Ragan "will pilot the No. 18 M&M's Crispy Toyota for at least the next several weeks." No timetable on Busch's recovery was given. Busch was transported back to North Carolina on Tuesday after suffering a compound fracture in his lower right leg and a broken left foot in a crash on Saturday at Daytona.

“We appreciate being able to work with Front Row Motorsports and CSX for David’s (Ragan) availability,” Joe Gibbs said in the statement. “We are fortunate to be able to have someone of David’s caliber behind the wheel while Kyle recovers. Erik is a big part of our future at JGR and we will be increasing his schedule in the XFINITY Series beginning this weekend in Atlanta and seeking the earliest opportunity to provide him Cup experience. We appreciate all the support we have received from the NASCAR community including our fans and we look forward to getting Kyle back in the car as soon as possible.”

Erik is Erik Jones, who will drive the No. 54 Xfinity Series car for Busch at Atlanta.

Ragan has been with Front Row Motorsports in the Cup Series since the beginning of the 2012 season. His temporary move to Joe Gibbs Racing gives the team three former Roush Fenway Racing drivers in Ragan, Matt Kenseth and Carl Edwards.

FRM utlizes Fords in the Cup Series but the manufacturer change proved to ultimately not be an obstacle. His No. 34 car had no owner's points in 2015 after Cole Whitt's No. 35 had the points transferred to it. Whitt brought a sponsor to Front Row. Had Ragan tried to qualify for Atlanta with FRM, he would have had to make the race on qualifying speed.

The move gives Ragan a chance to compete in top-tier equipment once again. Front Row is the No. 4 Ford team in the Cup Series behind Team Penske, Roush Fenway and Richard Petty Motorsports.

News sport : First 2016 Best Picture nominee: 'Family First,' the Marshawn Lynch story

Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch has become a somewhat mysterious figure, mostly because he doesn't say much to the media.

Well, a new movie is going to tell the story of his life. That an extended preview of it dropped on YouTube the week after the Academy Awards can't be a coincidence because (spoiler alert) this might be the next Best Picture nominee.

"Family First," a biopic about Marshawn Lynch's life, will be released this year. It was produced in June and July of 2014 and oh enough of the suspense let's get to this preview (WARNING: There is some swearing and strong language in this YouTube clip):

Eat your heart out, "Birdman."

The high school version of Lynch was played by his brother Davonte according to the IMDB page (and Delisa Lynch plays Marshawn's mother after his high school years), and it appears that Lynch plays himself from his college days at Cal on. It's hard to buy a 28-year-old fully grown Lynch as the Cal version of himself, but whatever.

Based on the preview this will be about what you'd expect from a movie like this, which is pure straight-to-DVD cheesy greatness.

Lynch is apparently considering retirement again, and now we know he has a future as an actor when he's done running in the NFL.

News sport : UCLA makes Tom Bradley hire official

UCLA's hire of Tom Bradley as the Bruins' new defensive coordinator is official.

“To bring a coach of Tom Bradley’s caliber to UCLA is very exciting,” UCLA coach Jim Mora said in a statement. “His knowledge of the game, extensive experience, level of intensity and attention to detail all make him one of the best defensive teachers in college football. Combine that with the fact that he has strong national recruiting ties and is one of the most well respected coaches in the game - it all adds up to Tom being a tremendous addition to our staff.”

Bradley, who was with West Virginia in 2014, was mentioned as UCLA's likely hire last week. Former UCLA DC Jeff Ulbrich left around National Signing Day for a coaching position with the Atlanta Falcons. Bradley also served as Penn State's interim coach after Joe Paterno was fired. He was with Penn State for 32 seasons.

UCLA also announced that linebackers and special teams coach Mike Tuiasosopo wouldn't return for the 2015 season. Scott White will take his place. White has been with UCLA the past four seasons.

News sport : Atlanta adding more safety measures for race

Atlanta Motor Speedway is taking some extra measures for its race weekend.

The track is now the second weekend on the NASCAR circuit and announced Tuesday that it would put tire barriers on the inside turn four wall. In Saturday's Xfinity Series race at Daytona, Kyle Busch hit an unprotected concrete wall and broke his right leg and left foot. After the Xfinity Series race, Daytona added tires to the inside wall Busch hit for the Daytona 500.

There isn't enough time to have SAFER barriers installed before race activities begin, and the track said it would look at areas for SAFER barriers after the race. It's also extending the pit road wall.

Both Charlotte Motor Speedway and Atlanta are tracks owned by Speedway Motorsports Inc.

Charlotte, New Hampshire and Kentucky (the latter two are SMI tracks as well) are also adding more SAFER barriers. Expect other tracks to make similar announcements as the season goes on.

Talladega president Grant Lynch told USA Today that he expects his track to follow the steps Daytona is taking.

While it's easy to applaud the fact that tracks are making the move to install more protection for drivers, it's a move that's way, way too late. it doesn't excuse that safety measures should have been at A-level standards at all tracks across the board before Busch's crash.

News sport : The 10-man rotation, starring the stats that really aren't all that hard to suss out

A look around the league and the Web that covers it. It's also important to note that the rotation order and starting nods aren't always listed in order of importance. That's for you, dear reader, to figure out.

News sport : Fan surprised to find out picture with Nick Mangold wasn't him at all

New York Jets center Nick Mangold crushes defensive linemen during the NFL season and now, apparently, he also crushes the dreams of NFL fans as well during the offseason.

A couple days ago, a fan by the name of Jackie Nolan thought she had taken a photo with the Pro Bowl center, posing next to a smiling bearded man who holds a slight resemblance to Mangold. It seemed like the ultimate fan moment and one that had Nolan showing off her pearly whites:

But then Nolan had that moment rudely awakened when she tweeted the photo and tagged Mangold in it. Mangold, who can be quite the comedian on Twitter, wasn't joking when he responded back, putting a pancake block to what she thought was her recent celebrity sighting.

According to her Twitter page, shortly before she posted the photo Nolan followed Mangold on Twitter. Have to feel bad for Nolan in this instance as some man clearly sold her a story of false identity. But there's always hope — perhaps she'll run into Manti Teo's girlfriend next week at the same bar.

News sport : ESPN suspends Keith Olbermann after Penn State tweets

ESPN anchor Keith Olbermann has been suspended by the network for the rest of the week after a series of tweets directed at Penn State students.

Olbermann, who was critical of Penn State on his ESPN show in January after Joe Paterno's vacated wins were restored, was told on Twitter by a user about the $13 million raised by Penn State students for pediatric cancer. He responded to the tweet with a response of "pitiful."

"We are aware of the exchange Keith Olbermann had on Twitter last night regarding Penn State. It was completely inappropriate and does not reflect the views of ESPN," the network said in a statement. "We have discussed it with Keith, who recognizes he was wrong. ESPN and Keith have agreed that he will not host his show for the remainder of this week and will return on Monday. The annual tradition of THON and the efforts of the students of Penn State to fight pediatric cancer should be applauded."

Olbermann said his use of the word "pitiful" was towards Penn State students and not towards the fundraising efforts. The efforts culminate with the Penn State Dance Marathon, known as THON, and students stand and dance for 46 hours straight. Over 700 students participated in the marathon. The efforts have raised over $114 million since 1977.

However, that was not the only tweet.

Picking a childish fight via a pediatric cancer fundraiser is absolutely inexplicable. And, quite frankly, an act that Olbermann would likely take to task if it was done by someone else, especially someone he disagreed with.

Olbermann apologized Tuesday afternoon. We'll see if he apologizes again on his show next week.

News sport : Big Ten to seek outside feedback on freshmen ineligibility

Jim Delany, Commissioner of the Big Ten Conference speaks during a news conference to announce a partnership with Madison Square Garden Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2014, in New York. (AP Photo/Frank Franklin II) Big Ten leaders met this week about the possibility of making freshmen ineligible in football and men’s basketball. Now the conference confirmed that it will discuss the idea further and seek outside opinions in doing so.

In a statement released on BTN.com, the Big Ten announced that it “unanimously decided” to reach out to “a diverse group of thought leaders to obtain feedback” on a number of issues, including freshmen ineligibility – which the conference is calling “a year of readiness.”

The “year of readiness” could be established for all sports, or only select sports (read: football and men’s basketball). Other issues the conference plans to discuss include “student-athlete time demands, playing seasons, initial eligibility requirements,” and other things that could impact the academic pursuits of student-athletes.

The Big Ten says it wants input from all of its member institutions:

Knowing that matters of such impact would never be adopted unilaterally by a single conference or institution, it is important to the conference to devise a strategy and timeline that would encourage, and allow the conference to obtain, input from all.

While Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany said these discussions are all about promoting an “education first” mission, he says the Big Ten won’t pursue these ventures alone.

“While we are comfortable generating multiple ideas about an education first approach to intercollegiate athletics in the twenty-first century, we won’t go it alone on any of these matters,” Delany said. “We look forward to working with our colleagues in the NCAA Division I governance structure, and to exploring a broad exchange of ideas from both inside and outside of intercollegiate athletics.”

In its statement, the Big Ten acknowledged that it hopes to generate discussion about these issues leading up to the 2016 NCAA National Convention.

We’ll see if anything concrete comes from these discussions.

News sport : Can things be patched up between Adrian Peterson and Vikings?

Not surprisingly, Adrian Peterson and the people around him were paying attention to how the Minnesota Vikings reacted as he was handling an incident in which he injured his 4-year-old son with a switch.

The story has been playing out this month, and it is complicated. The Vikings, at every turn lately, have expressed that they want Peterson back, but with careful words because he is still suspended by the NFL. It might not be that easy.

in the last week, Peterson has said he is "still uneasy" about returning to the Vikings and Peterson's agent reportedly had to be separated from a Vikings official during a heated confrontation in Indianapolis with the agent making it clear Peterson wouldn't play in Minnesota again. Peterson's father told the St. Paul Pioneer Press that his son hasn't ruled out playing for the Vikings again, but in the same article mentioned people with the Vikings "kicking him when he was down."

If there's a reconciliation coming, it'll take some work.

Peterson had an interview with ESPN.com in which he seemed to waffle a bit. He said loves the Vikings fans and his teammates and coach Mike Zimmer, but said he knew of some in the organization that didn't want him back and took exception with media reports that looked into his past, things that "weren't even relevant" to the incident with his son. This quote sounded a bit ominous:

"I learned a lot through this process," Peterson told ESPN.com. "I'm still uneasy, to be honest with you. I'm still uneasy about a lot of things that took place within the organization."

Then in Indianapolis, a confrontation between Peterson's agent and Vikings vice president of football operations Rob Brzezinski got a lot of attention. CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora reported that former Tampa Bay general manager Mark Dominik had to separate the men, and La Canfora quoted a source close to Peterson saying he'd never play another game in Minnesota.

Nelson Peterson, Adrian's father, said that's not the case. He hasn't demanded a trade or closed the door on playing for the Vikings, Nelson Peterson told the Pioneer Press. But there seems to be some angst over chief operating officer Kevin Warren and his role in Peterson not playing last season.

"Kevin Warren was a major player in the push last year to not have Adrian reinstated," Nelson Peterson said according to the Pioneer Press. "We had our sources that we knew that Kevin wasn't working for Adrian to get him back on the field and was working to keep Adrian off the field."

A witness to the Dogra-Brzezinski argument told the Pioneer Press that the confrontation centered around Warren. Peterson's came seems especially irked by Warren's promotion to COO earlier this year.

And not that the situation needed to get messier, but there's Peterson's contract. He has a $15.4 million cap hit this season, which is high for any running back in today's era, even one that won an NFL MVP award in 2012.

Money is usually the root of any disagreement between a player and team. Given the conflicting feelings between all parties, Peterson's salary seems well down the list. It appears a lot needs to be worked out if Peterson is going to return to his first and only NFL team.

News sport : Vince Lombardi's West Point sweater bought for $.58, auctioned off for $40K

A man who purchased a West Point sweater for 58 cents a year ago found himself a whole lot richer this past weekend.

The sweater, which was purchased at a Goodwill store in Asheville, North Carolina, was owned and worn by Vince Lombardi when he coached the Academy from 1949 to 1953.

It sold this past weekend at an auction in New York City for $43,020.

Sean McEvoy of Knoxville, Tennessee told ESPN he saw the sweater at the Goodwill store and initially thought it was a basketball warmup. He said his wife saw the name “Lombardi” and the number “46” on a tag in the back of the sweater but didn’t make a connection and didn’t tell her husband.

It wasn’t until McEvoy was watching a documentary about Lombardi and saw the famed coach wearing a sweater similar to the one he had purchased. He pulled the sweater out, saw the name on the back tag and made the connection.

McEvoy, who sells vintage clothes online, initially called the Pro Football Hall of Fame about the find and it wanted him to donate the sweater. McEvoy then got in touch with Heritage Auctions in Dallas, which helped facilitate the authentication of the item and then put it up for auction with a starting bid of $20,000.

The winning bid was $36,000, but a 19.5 percent buyer's premium made the final sale price of $43,020.

According to ESPN, the sweater was donated to Goodwill by Ann Wannamaker, the widow of Bill Wannamaker, who coached with Lombardi at Army. Heritage Auctions had agreed to take the money it collected from the seller, about $4,000, and gift it back to that Goodwill.

News sport : Brian Stewart officially becomes Nebraska's defensive backs coach

COLLEGE PARK, MD. - August 16: Maryland defensive coordinator, Brian Stewart , during the football scrimmage and fan appreciation day on August 16, 2014 in College Park, MD. (Photo by Jonathan Newton / The Washington Post) Brian Stewart wasn’t out of work long.

The former defensive coordinator who mutually agreed to part ways with Maryland last week is now the defensive backs coach at Nebraska.

“I couldn’t be more excited to be a part of the Nebraska football program,” Stewart said in a statement released by the school. “The opportunity to coach at Nebraska is awesome. My first impression is ‘wow’. From the weight room to walking down the hallway and seeing the national championship trophies, Nebraska is what you think it is…a football powerhouse.

“The most important thing for me in my coaching career is my family. Coach Riley and his staff have been together so long, and you can just see the loyalty and trust. I’m proud to be a part of that.”

Stewart spent three seasons as Maryland’s defensive coordinator, but last season, the Terps defense slipped and was one of the worst in the Big Ten. It ranked 12th in the Big Ten in total defense and 13th in pass defense.

Stewart inherits a Nebraska secondary group that ranked fourth in the Big Ten in passing yards allowed, fourth in passing efficiency defense and fifth in interceptions.
