News sport : Brian Stewart officially becomes Nebraska's defensive backs coach

COLLEGE PARK, MD. - August 16: Maryland defensive coordinator, Brian Stewart , during the football scrimmage and fan appreciation day on August 16, 2014 in College Park, MD. (Photo by Jonathan Newton / The Washington Post) Brian Stewart wasn’t out of work long.

The former defensive coordinator who mutually agreed to part ways with Maryland last week is now the defensive backs coach at Nebraska.

“I couldn’t be more excited to be a part of the Nebraska football program,” Stewart said in a statement released by the school. “The opportunity to coach at Nebraska is awesome. My first impression is ‘wow’. From the weight room to walking down the hallway and seeing the national championship trophies, Nebraska is what you think it is…a football powerhouse.

“The most important thing for me in my coaching career is my family. Coach Riley and his staff have been together so long, and you can just see the loyalty and trust. I’m proud to be a part of that.”

Stewart spent three seasons as Maryland’s defensive coordinator, but last season, the Terps defense slipped and was one of the worst in the Big Ten. It ranked 12th in the Big Ten in total defense and 13th in pass defense.

Stewart inherits a Nebraska secondary group that ranked fourth in the Big Ten in passing yards allowed, fourth in passing efficiency defense and fifth in interceptions.

News sport : Ohio State coach Urban Meyer is stuck at sea on Cruise for Cancer

SCOTTSDALE, AZ - JANUARY 28: Urban Meyer, head football coach at Ohio State University, looks up to the gallery on the 16th hole during the pro-am prior to the start of the Waste Management Phoenix Open at TPC Scottsdale on January 28, 2015 in Scottsdale, Arizona. (Photo by Scott Halleran/Getty Images) Ohio State coach Urban Meyer is lost at sea.

OK, we’re being dramatic, but the boat he’s on is staying out on the water for an extra day because of dense fog in the Gulf of Mexico, according to WBNS-TV.

Meyer and his wife Shelley are among thousands aboard Ohio State’s Cruise for Cancer, which raises money for Ohio State’s James Cancer Hospital and the Urban and Shelley Meyer Fund for Cancer Research.

The cruise left Thursday and was scheduled to dock in Tampa, Fla., on Monday. In addition to Meyer and his wife, the cruise also has thousands of Ohio State fans and several former basketball and football players.

But don't feel too bad for them. The weather is in the 70s on the cruise and 12 degrees in Columbus, Ohio.

News sport : Cordell Broadus had a 'Coming to America' birthday party

Snoop Dogg's son got a 'Coming to America'-themed birthday party.

UCLA signee Cordell Broadus had his 18th birthday party on Sunday and it was, well, it was a big shindig.

Just take a look at the video from TMZ:

Someone wanting to find a deeper meaning in this party could wonder if Broadus' future attendance at UCLA is an arranged marriage given the re-enactment of the wedding scene. Though given Snoop's USC fandom, it's a harder case to make than if Broadus was about to be a Trojan.

Snoop also posted a picture to Instagram of the "Royal Family." Yes, Broadus' tattoo of his mother was covered up by his suit and coat.

We're going to go out on a limb and say that the symbolism from the party is instead about Broadus becoming an adult. And we'll also go ahead and pretty much guarantee that we'll never have a birthday party that even comes close to that affair.

News sport : Is David Ragan a candidate to sub for Kyle Busch?

Joe Gibbs Racing could be looking to an established Sprint Cup Series driver to fill in for Kyle Busch.

According to both NBC Sports and the Charlotte Observer, David Ragan is a possibility to drive the No. 18 in Busch's absence. Ragan currently drives for Front Row Motorsports in the No. 34 car.

From NBC:

JGR is considering a plan that would share the ride between Ragan and Camping World Truck Series driver Erik Jones, who is under contract to the team, while Busch recovers from his injury. There is no timetable on the return for Busch, who spent a third consecutive night in a Daytona Beach, Fla., hospital after being hurt in a Saturday crash during the Xfinity Series season opener at Daytona International Speedway.

Jones, 18, has a developmental contract with JGR but has never driven in a Sprint Cup Series race and has four Xfinity Series starts, including Saturday's race (Coincidentally, contact between Busch and Jones is what started the crash that Busch sustained a broken leg and foot in). He won three Truck Series races in 12 starts last season.

If Busch's injury would have happened last year, JGR would have no shortage of in-house replacements for him. Elliott Sadler drove for the team in the Xfinity Series last year and so did Darrell Wallace Jr. However, now both are at Roush Fenway Racing. According to NBC, Sadler was a candidate to replace Busch in the 500 (with Ford's approval) until Matt Crafton was selected to drive the car.

Ragan's contract status with Ford and Front Row would obviously have to be figured out for a move to Gibbs to happen. Ragan has been with Ford since he moved to the Cup Series and has been with Front Row since he left Roush after the 2011 season.

Though he won at Talladega in 2013, Ragan has been a backmarker in his time at Front Row. His highest finish in the points standings is 28th and he has five top-10 finishes in three seasons and Sunday's Daytona 500.

While Ragan may be giving up a full-time ride (unless an arrangement could be worked out), he may view the shot in top-tier equipment as too good to pass up. At 29, it's not too late for Ragan to get a ride with an upper level team again.

News sport : Cleveland Browns 'new' helmet is ... let's just say it looks familiar

First of all, I like the Cleveland Browns' helmets and I'm glad they didn't do a massive overhaul just because they felt they needed to.

Though, announcing it as a "new" helmet is kind of overselling.

It's the same. The orange color is a little brighter. Take a look, from the Browns' website:

(ClevelandBrowns.com)

I mean, maybe that looks a ton different on our television sets in the fall. But on a screen it just looks like someone spilled a little more paint (the new Dawg Pound logo is pretty good though). The new color is billed as "brighter and richer and matches the passion or our fans and city." Sure. The brown face mask is new, and a nice touch. They also changed the font on the wordmark, which I hadn't noticed before and won't notice moving forward.

Again, this wasn't exactly the Buccaneers overhauling their rosters to make it look like they were a digital clock:

The Browns have teased a new uniform unveiling for April 14. Maybe the brown color will be a little darker, who knows.

News sport : Arizona State students re-enact Hail Mary that beat USC (Video)

USC played at Arizona State on Sunday in men's basketball, so what better way to distract USC basketball players than by rubbing in how the Sun Devils won in football?

Arizona State's win over USC was one of the more memorable moments of the 2014 college football season as Jaelen Strong caught a Hail Mary from Mike Bercovici with no time left to give ASU a 38-34 win over USC. It's become known as the "Jael Mary" to ASU fans.

On Sunday night, USC students reprised the roles of Bercovici and Strong while Elijah Stewart was at the free throw line.

You may need to watch closely. A student dressed up as Bercovici is on the right side of your screen. He throws a ball in the form of a cutout being run by another student, to a student dressed up as Strong on the left side of the screen.

We applaud the creativity. So did Bercovici.

In case you were wondering, Stewart missed the first free throw and ASU won 64-59.

News sport : Auburn releases statement regarding harassment allegations

Auburn released a statement Monday night regarding accusations by a woman who says she was harassed by two Auburn football players.

Ashley Ozyurt., who said she suffers from post traumatic stress disorder from a sexual assault incident while in the Air Force, said she was haggled by two players as she and her service dog walked to class last week.

According to the school, the players, Andrew Williams and Dontavius Russell, did nothing with "disrespectful intent" and Williams made noises trying to get the dog's attention from a distance without understanding the dog's purpose. Russell was walking to class.

The full statement via Facebook is below.

On Tuesday, February 17th Auburn Athletics was made aware of an incident in the lobby area of Haley Center involving two student-athletes and an interaction with a fellow student and her service dog.

Based on conversations with the students, it’s our belief that neither of the student-athletes, Andrew Williams nor Dontavius Russell, did anything with disrespectful intent. From a distance, Andrew made noises trying to get the dog’s attention. He didn't understand the purpose of the dog or realize that the student was a disabled veteran. Dontavius had no involvement in the interaction whatsoever as he was only walking to class.

Andrew offers the following message to the female student. “I want to take this opportunity to apologize for raising my voice. I was startled and totally misunderstood the situation. My mother and father who raised me both served in the military. I have tremendous respect for veterans. In the past week, I've learned a lot more about the role of service dogs for veterans and now better understand her courage to attend Auburn.”

The matter is under review by the university’s Office of Affirmative Action/Equal Employment Opportunity. We have and will continue to cooperate, and we understand the review must be allowed to follow its normal course.

Auburn has a long history of supporting the men and women who have served our country. We look forward to adding new programs and educational offerings that raise awareness about service dogs and the challenges that often impact those who serve. Both of the student-athletes affected by the incident were raised by military families and value all that Auburn does in support of the many military appreciation related activities.

Auburn coach Gus Malzahn reportedly had apologized to the woman for the actions of the players. Ozyurt said the incident had triggered a PTSD episode that forced her to leave class that day.

Both Russell and WIlliams are defensive linemen who were redshirt freshmen in 2014.

Fifa proposes Nov-Dec World Cup

The Fifa task force looking into dates for the Qatar World Cup has recommended a shorter tournament to be staged in November and December 2022.

|||

Doha - The Fifa task force looking into dates for the Qatar World Cup has recommended a shorter tournament to be staged in November and December 2022, the head of the Asian Football Confederation told reporters on Tuesday.

Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al-Khalifa said all options would be reviewed at the Fifa meeting next month, when the recommendation is expected to be ratified by the executive committee of world soccer's governing body.

“Some people have concerns, but whatever decision you're going to take will have some questions about it,” Sheikh Salman said after a meeting of the task force.

“But... we need to look at the overall benefit of everybody.”

There are no plans to reduce the size of the tournament from 32 teams or 64 matches, but the tournament would be shortened by a matter of days.

If ratified in Zurich in March, the recommendations will set Fifa on a collision course with major European soccer leagues who prefer an April-May option to minimise disruption to their lucrative domestic programmes. – Reuters

News sport : Report: Yankees unhappy with Alex Rodriguez reporting early

It doesn't matter what he does at this point, lightning rod extraordinaire Alex Rodriguez will always find himself on the receiving end of some sort of criticism.

The A-Rod news of the day Monday was that the 39-year-old arrived at the New York Yankees' facility in Tampa Bay a few days early. It would seem like a good idea for a player that didn't play at all last season and doesn't have a guaranteed role within his team to get some work in before everyone else shows up, but it's A-Rod so someone isn't happy.

[Yahoo Sports Fantasy Baseball: Sign up and join a league today!]

Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News writes that Yankees officials did not expect to see Rodriguez at camp so soon and weren't pleased they didn't get a heads-up he was coming:

A-Rod’s early arrival was a bit of a surprise, as many had pegged him for a Wednesday appearance when position players are slated to report to Steinbrenner Field.

Roughly 20 reporters and a handful of cameras were on hand at the minor-league complex to greet A-Rod, a fraction of what had been expected for his arrival.

The Yankees had no issues with A-Rod arriving on Monday, but team officials were fuming that he hadn’t alerted them to his plans.

“He’s learned nothing,” said one baseball executive. “He’s the same old guy. He just did what he wanted to do.”

On the A-Rod offences scale this one barely registers. This report just highlights the fact that Rodriguez and the Yankees aren't on the same page, which isn't exactly breaking news.

[Baseball is back! Check out Yahoo For Spring Training for great spring training pics.]

As our Jeff Passan wrote in his column from Monday's scene: "There will be more, so much more, because one thing Rodriguez can't do is stay quiet for long. The next show is later in the week, when Rodriguez's teammates opine on his return. For now, obligations satisfied, he gets back into his truck and takes a right on Himes Avenue and a left on Columbus Drive, past Ballers Barber Shop and the 7-Eleven, off into the afternoon, his first dance complete, too many more to come."

The lightning rod extraordinaire will strike again soon.

Fifa to discuss WC 2022 dates

A Fifa taskforce met in Doha to discuss moving the 2022 World Cup in Qatar to winter due to scorching summer temperatures.

|||

A Fifa taskforce met Tuesday in Doha to discuss moving the 2022 World Cup in Qatar to winter due to scorching summer temperatures in the Gulf state.

A shift to November-December is seen as likely but faces resistance from European clubs who fear major disruption to high-profile championships such as La Liga, Bundesliga and the Premier League.

Officials from football's global governing body, top leagues and players' representatives are attending the crucial meeting.

About 40 delegates were bussed into the Qatar National Convention Centre, in central Doha, as the talks began just after 0700 GMT.

The group went straight into the meeting without talking to waiting journalists.

FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke was the last to arrive and there was a small moment of light relief when the automatic doors would not open for him, but he eventually got into the building.

Traditionally the World Cup is played in June and July and if the competition is shifted to November and December, it is likely the European clubs will seek hefty compensation.

They are likely to be unsuccessful as European football's governing body, Uefa, has already accepted a switch to winter.

The move to November and December is seen as necessary because of the extreme weather condition in Qatar during the summer, when temperatures soar above 40 degrees Celsius.

The task force will make a recommendation to Fifa whose executive committee will reach a decision on March 19-20 in Zurich.

The task force also has to take into consideration other sports.

It must seek to avoid holding a tournament that will not clash with the International Olympic Committee as the 2022 Winter Olympics will be held in January or February.

Qatar has said it is happy to host the World Cup on whichever date Fifa chooses and that it is developing air-cooling technology to accommodate players and fans during the fierce Qatari summer. – AFP

News sport : Mat Latos' comments about time with Reds cause quite a stir

(Getty Images)

Mat Latos is known just as much for his fiery personality as he is for his fire-balling right arm on the mound, so the following shouldn't come as any suprise.

The 27-year-old starting pitcher was dealt to his hometown Miami Marlins in December after three seasons with the Cincinnati Reds and in a lengthy one-on-one interview with Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports, Latos touched on a number of subjects about his time in Cincinnati.

He said he was happy with the trade to the Marlins, he questioned the way the organization handled his knee injury last season, and also cited a general lack of leadership in the clubhouse.

[Yahoo Sports Fantasy Baseball: Sign up and join a league today!]

Latos did praise many of his former teammates as well as the team's ownership but of course those weren't the comments that became a topic of conversation back in Cincinnati.

The criticisms launched by Latos were obviously not well received by the Reds. Manager Bryan Price and general manager Walt Jocketty were among those who responded.

Price accused Latos of casting "A negative light on our organization. We've done nothing to deserve it, " while Jocketty added "It is something that is not true. There were more than a couple of things that were exaggerated."

[Baseball is back! Check out Yahoo For Spring Training for great spring training pics.]

The latest from this story, according to Miami Herald, is that Latos plans to take a break from talking with the media for a few days. From here it appears that both sides have said their piece about the past and that everyone involved is now back to focusing on the upcoming season. Latos is looking to put together a big year in Miami with his free agency looming next offseason. The Reds have their eye on getting back to the postseason after finishing in fourth place in the NL Central in 2014.

Expect this war of words to be short-lived: the next showdown between Latos and his former club will take place on the field.

Chelsea to appeal Matic red card

Chelsea are to appeal against the red card shown to Nemanja Matic during Saturday's Premier League home draw with Burnley.

|||

London - Chelsea are to appeal against the red card shown to Nemanja Matic during Saturday's 1-1 Premier League home draw with Burnley, according to Sky Sports.

Matic was sent off in the 70th minute at Stamford Bridge for his violent reaction to a studs-up challenge from Burnley's Ashley Barnes.

But the FA said on Twitter on Monday that no action would be taken against Barnes as the incident was seen by the officials.

“A criminal tackle. Matic is a very lucky guy,” said Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho after his midfield player escaped injury.

The 26-year-old Serbian international rushed at Barnes and pushed him to the ground but he was defended by his manager.

“Football is about emotions and clearly Nemanja Matic had a reason to lose his emotions,” Mourinho said.

“What are the consequences of his push? Nothing. The consequence for Matic from the tackle? It could have been the end of his career.”

The FA added on Twitter: “In the vast majority of challenges for the ball, no retrospective action is taken as the incident has been seen by the match officials.

“Retrospective action introduced as deterrent for 'off the ball incidents' (for example kicks, stamps etc) committed out of sight of officials.

“Whole game in agreement that, in vast majority of cases, match officials are best-placed to deal with incidents to avoid re-refereeing.”

Chelsea must submit their appeal to the FA by 1300 GMT on Tuesday. Unless it succeeds, Matic will miss Sunday's League Cup final against Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley.

He will also be banned for Premier League matches against West Ham United and Southampton. – Reuters

Suarez returns to England

Luis Suarez's life has changed considerably since his last appearance in an English football stadium, when he paraded Anfield holding his son in his arm after Liverpool missed out on the league title on the final day of last season.

|||

Manchester, England – Luis Suarez's life has changed considerably since his last appearance in an English football stadium, when he paraded Anfield holding his son in his arm after Liverpool missed out on the league title on the final day of last season.

In the intervening seven months, he has bitten another opponent - this time at a World Cup - to get a four-month worldwide ban, changed clubs to become the third most expensive footballer of all time, and gone from the main man at Liverpool to one of the supporting cast at Barcelona.

Now he's back in England for Tuesday's Champions League match against Manchester City, seeking a first standout game for Barcelona to emerge -even if only briefly - from the shadow of the club's star player, fellow forward Lionel Messi.

“At Liverpool, the team was built around him,” City midfielder Samir Nasri said. “At Barcelona, you cannot do that when you have Messi at his prime.”

Suarez is the current player of the year in England after scoring 31 goals in 33 Premier League games last season. At Barca, goals have been tougher to come by for the Uruguay international, with seven from 22 appearances. Indeed, the $130-million signing has been regarded more as a hard-working assist-maker than the scoring machine he turned into in England.

His star-studded combination up front with Messi and Neymar is starting to blossom, however, and Barcelona coach Luis Enrique is happy with how his Suarez has settled.

“He has been doing really well,” Enrique said Monday, on the eve of the first leg of the last-16 match against City. “It is his first season here and he is a real reference in attack, a real target man. He has got virtues that really benefit us.

“He is good on the ball, he allows other forwards to work around him, he creates space. He is going to bring a lot to Barcelona in the future.”

Suarez scored only once in six matches against City for Liverpool, and that was a free kick. City, though, knew it could focus largely on Suarez when he was at Liverpool. Attacking threats will come from all over in Barca's team on Tuesday, although primarily from Messi.

After a mid-season slump, in which doubts were raised about Messi's future at Barcelona, the Spanish giants looked back to their best during an 11-match winning run that helped them close the gap to leader Real Madrid in the Spanish league and advance to the semifinals of the Copa del Rey.

A 1-0 La Liga loss to Malaga on Saturday was an unexpected setback, though, and Enrique has spent much of the build-up to the City game playing down suggestions that problems from earlier in the season have resurfaced at the Camp Nou.

“The morale is fine. No one is too down,” a prickly Enrique said. “I don't see why the team should be down after such a great run of victories. We didn't do things right at the weekend. We need to carry on doing things as we have been.”

Enrique said he viewed City, the reigning English champion, as one of the contenders for the Champions League trophy even though it has never advanced beyond the last 16 of the competition. Barcelona beat City 4-1 on aggregate at this stage last season.

“I don't think there is a favourite in this game,” Enrique said. “City have strengthened in the summer, we have too. And we have changed. It was necessary for Barca to move on and bring in new players.

“What happens on the pitch tomorrow will show if the gap has closed.” – Sapa-AP

News sport : Orioles reportedly take a flyer on infielder Everth Cabrera

(Norm Hall/Getty Images)

There were rumblings a few days ago that the Baltimore Orioles were close to a deal with free agent infielder Everth Cabrera. On Monday, Jon Heyman of CBS Sports confirmed that the two sides had come to terms on a one-year contract for $2.4 million.

Cabrera's issues are no secret. He received a 50-game suspension in 2013 for his involvement with Biogenesis and he has a trial date in April for resisting arrest. The 28-year-old was non-tendered by the Padres in December and while carrying some risk, instantly became an interesting option for teams looking to improve their infield depth.

In the end it was that Orioles that took the bait, hoping Cabrera might be able to regain the All-Star form he flashed in 2013. He's coming off a rough year where he hit just .232 and was plagued by a hamstring injury, but for just a one year commitment it's worth seeing what he can bring to the team.

[Yahoo Sports Fantasy Baseball: Sign up and join a league today!]

The left side of Baltimore's infield is set with J.J. Hardy at shortstop and a healthy Manny Machado at third base. Jonathan Schoop provided strong defence at second base in his first full major league season but wasn't quite as successful at the plate, slashing .209/.244/.354 in 137 games.

At worst, Cabrera can be a solid backup at both middle infield spots and a great pinch-runnner (99 stolen bases since 2012) off the bench. If he looks good, he could force a competition with Schoop and utility man Ryan Flaherty for playing time at second and maybe even snag the starting job.

After losing Nick Markakis and Nelson Cruz in the offseason, the Orioles are in tough to defend their AL East title from the reloaded Red Sox, intriguing Blue Jays, and Yankees.

[Baseball is back! Check out Yahoo For Spring Training for great spring training pics.]

Adding Cabrera won't be the move that sets Baltimore apart from their rivals, but the potential is there for him to contribute to the cause.

News sport : 76ers' Isaiah Canaan hits ridiculous mid-air buzzer-beater vs. Heat

On one hand, it is reasonable to think that Philadelphia 76ers general manager Sam Hinkie made an odd and perhaps foolish decision by shipping promising rookie swingman K.J. McDaniels to the Houston Rockets at last Thursday's wild and wooly trade deadline. On the other, though, the guy Hinkie got for McDaniels — former Murray State Racers standout Isaiah Canaan — apparently consists primarily of magic:

[Follow Dunks Don't Lie on Tumblr: The best slams from all of basketball]

With the clock ticking down in the second quarter of a competitive contest between the Sixers and Miami Heat, Philly wing Luc Richard Mbah a Moute drove to the basket but lost the ball as he approached the rim. Teammate Hollis Thompson grabbed the ball out of the air in the right corner and tossed it in Canaan's direction as he sailed out of bounds.

Heat star Dwyane Wade tipped the pass intended for the former Rockets point guard, and with less than one second remaining on the 24-second shot clock, Canaan leapt into the air, caught the ball and heaved up a prayer ... which, of course, was answered. Off the window. (It remains unclear if Canaan called "bank.")

Here's a closer look at the replay angle, courtesy of friend of the program @its_whitney:

What initially looked like a buzzer-beating 3-pointer, which would have been Canaan's third of the first half, was eventually ruled a 2-pointer, because the point guard's left foot was inside the arc when he took flight to try his brilliant bit of nonsense. That's a bit sad, but you'd have to imagine coach Brett Brown and company aren't too mad; two points is better than the zero points Philly should have gotten out of that trip, after all.

In many other seasons, Canaan's catch-and-release mid-air chuck would rank as the craziest shot of the season. In this season, though, that honor still belongs to Trevor Booker and his no-look tip drill. Everybody else — even pint-sized point men redirecting tipped passes off the window — is just shooting for second, stylishly though they may be.
