News sport : Hear what Pete Carroll said on Seattle's final Super Bowl drive

There should be no surprise that when the Seattle Seahawks needed a touchdown in the final two minutes to win Super Bowl XLIX, Pete Carroll was energetic, optimistic and excited.

That's who he always is.

Carroll was wired for sound for the Seahawks' loss, and his reactions on the final drive are great. His matter-of-fact confidence to Russell Wilson is tremendous, his reaction to Jermaine Kearse's circus catch is fun to see, and then there's his must-see reaction to the New England Patriots' interception that effectively ended the game.

It's a great clip from one of the most exciting Super Bowls ever.

News sport : Carlos Delgado elected to Baseball Hall of Fame – in Canada

Barely a month after being unceremoniously dumped from the National Baseball Hall of Fame ballot after receiving just 21 votes, former All-Star slugger Carlos Delgado will be enshrined in a different Hall of Fame. On Wednesday the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame announced its 2015 class and it is headlined by Delgado, who spent 12 seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays.

Back in January Delgado received just 3.8 percent of votes from the Baseball Writers Association of America and failed to meet the threshold to remain on the ballot for another year. That led ESPN’s Jayson Stark to name him the “best player in history to get booted off the Hall of Fame ballot after his first year.”

“Of all the victims of this messed up voting system, he's the biggest. This was his first year on the ballot. And his last.

He showed up on the ballot with his 473 homers and .929 career OPS. And 21 votes later, he was waving adios.

It wasn't so long ago that we'd have looked at a player like Carlos Delgado and said: "He's a Hall of Famer." But sadly, thanks to the Rule of 10 and the way we devalue all the numbers in the era he played in, we now have to look at him and say something else:

Sorry.”

Thankfully for Delgado and Canadian baseball fans, the BBWAA’s reach does not extend into Canada. In fact the Canadian Hall of Fame is full of former stars deemed not good enough by the BBWAA. The list of inductees includes former Montreal Expos star Tim Raines, 1993 World Series hero Joe Carter, and just about everyone else who played for the Blue Jays during the early 1990s.

Delgado is the Blue Jays all-time leader in home runs, runs batted in, doubles, runs scored, slugging percentage and offensive WAR. The honour was not lost on the native of Aguadilla, Puerto Rico.

“I’m very honoured and humbled to be selected into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame,” Delgado said in a statement. “I always say that you do not play the game for the awards, but if at the end of the day, you get that recognition from your fans and peers, it means a lot. And this is extra special to me because of the relationship that I have with the Toronto Blue Jays and their fans all across Canada.”

Joining Delgado at the 2015 induction ceremony is longtime Expos manager Felipe Alou, baseball’s all-time pinch-hit home run leader Matt Stairs, and reporter Bob Elliott, who won the National Baseball Hall of Fame’s J.G. Taylor Spink Award in 2012. In another display of Canada's kind and giving nature, former Minnesota Twins third baseman Corey Koskie will also be inducted.

The Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame is located in St. Marys, Ontario – a six-hour drive from Cooperstown, NY – and is worth the trip for baseball aficionados. The Hall of Fame inducts players and builders who are Canadian citizens or have “done something significant for the game of baseball in Canada.”

News sport : Browns having great offseason, now in trouble for texting controversy

I feel for Cleveland Browns fans. Really, I do.

They deserve better than being beaten over the head with bad news repeatedly. This week alone, the Browns have announced 2014 first-round pick Johnny Manziel checked into a treatment facility, the NFL announced Browns receiver Josh Gordon is suspended at least a year for the latest in an amazingly long line of failed NFL's substance abuse policy tests, and now there's a report the Browns could face serious penalties over a texting allegation.

In January there was a report from Mary Kay Cabot of the Northeast Ohio Media Group that a high-ranking official was texting about play calls from the press box to the sideline. Not only is that amazingly out of line in common NFL protocol, it's against league rules against electronic communications during games. The report said offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan wanted to leave because of Browns' dysfunction, and one of the reasons was the texts. Shanahan is now the Atlanta Falcons' offensive coordinator.

Cabot reported Wednesday that the texting Browns official was general manager Ray Farmer, and the NFL is investigating. Farmer's messages were reportedly relayed to the coaches on the sideline. Cabot wrote there could be a multi-game suspension for Farmer, a large fine or even loss of draft pick.

It's not like we didn't know of the Browns' dysfunction issues before, between multiple assistants turning them down for their head-coach opening last offseason after they fired Rob Chudzinksi after one year, and the total overhaul of the front office out of the blue, but it's still pretty brutal.

No matter what kind of penalties the Browns get, the reports on the whole ordeal are yet another embarrassment for a really beleaguered franchise.

News sport : Wake Forest assistant insults UNC on Twitter, deletes tweet

National Signing Day can certainly bring out those competitive juices in coaches. A tweet sent by Wake Forest tight ends and special teams coach Adam Scheier is a prime example of that.

Scheier fired off this feisty tweet on Wednesday and aimed it squarely at North Carolina, Wake’s in-state and ACC rival.

Scheier, of course, is referring to the academic scandal that has permeated at North Carolina over the past few seasons. Not surprisingly, Scheier’s hot take was deleted pretty quickly after it was sent.

For those keeping score at home, Wake Forest’s 2015 class is ranked 11th in the ACC and 52nd nationally, according to Rivals while North Carolina’s 2015 class is ranked fifth in the ACC and 27th nationally.

News sport : BYU coaches write and perform rap songs for each signee (Video)

While most schools have been celebrating their signees with tweets and phone calls, BYU has taken its celebrations just a step further — with custom rap songs.

That’s right, sign with BYU, get your very own rap song.

Running backs coach Mark Atuaia and a couple of the teams GAs have been producing original songs for each signee and putting them up on YouTube.

Shockingly, some of them actually aren’t bad. We’re especially fans of the one for Motekiai Langi, a 410-pound lineman from Tonga.

I guess if you’re trying to set yourself apart on National Signing Day this is definitely one way to do it. Not sure it’s a big selling point on the recruiting trail, but hey, it’s a nice touch.

And we shouldn’t be too surprised. This is the program that once had a lip sync battle that included hits from Katy Perry and Carly Rae Jepsen.

Afcon: the underdogs still have a say

Fans may already be licking their lips over the possibility of an Ivory Coast vs Ghana final at Afcon, but hold on...

|||

Bata - Neutral fans may already be licking their lips over the possibility of an Ivory Coast vs. Ghana final at the African Cup of Nations.

In the battle of the strikers it would be Wilfried Bony vs Asamoah Gyan. Playmakers: Gervinho vs. Christian Atsu. Coaches: Herve Renard vs. Avram Grant.

But hold on.

The African Cup has a tendency for the underdogs to surprise, and Congo and host Equatorial Guinea may yet spoil the party for one or both of the big guys.

Here are some things to know ahead of the African Cup semi-finals:

Ivory Coast-Ghana decider?

Neutral fans would likely love it. It would pit some of Africa's premier talent against each other, and give both teams a chance to end a long drought when it comes to the continental title. Ivory Coast and Ghana have probably been Africa's best teams over the last few years, but it is 25 years since either won.

Both know the danger of an underdog. Ivory Coast lost the 2012 final to big outsider Zambia, among its surprise losses in two finals, a semi-final, and two quarter-finals in the last five editions. Ghana also fell to Zambia three years ago, in the semi-finals, and lost to Burkina Faso in a big shock in the last four in 2013.

That means Ivory Coast's semi on Wednesday against Congo, and Ghana's on Thursday against Equatorial Guinea are not foregone conclusions.

Quieten down

Bizarrely, Equatorial Guinea's hopes may take a blow by playing its semi-final in the capital city, Malabo. Equatorial Guinea has played every one of its games in front of rowdy home fans at the 35 000-seat stadium in Bata, the biggest venue at the tournament. That surge of home support has been a major factor in the team making the semis for the first time. But the stadium in Malabo holds around 15 000 people, and that means the noise might go down a notch, something that'll definitely suit the Ghanaians.

Back in the big time: That's Congo. Sub-Saharan Africa's biggest country is back in the semi-finals for the first time in 17 years, and could make the African Cup final for the first time since the last of its two continental titles in 1974. Congo, once known as Zaire, used to be a powerhouse of African football. It's returned under the guidance of home coach Florent Ibenge, the only African coach left in the tournament.

Too many options

Ivory Coast coach Herve Renard says one of his big problems has been keeping his array of star attacking players happy, especially when many of them have to sit on the bench. Renard has gone with in-form Wilfried Bony as his No. 1 forward, and the likes of Max Gradel, Seydou Doumbia and Salomon Kalou all have to work around that.

“I can't play with all of them. It's impossible,” Renard said. “Although the players think we should play with all of them.”

Stat pack

The African Cup has produced 61 goals in 28 games, five successful penalty kicks, two missed penalties, 74 yellow cards, and two red cards. Ghana is the top-scoring team with seven, while host Equatorial Guinea is the best defensive team still in the tournament, conceding just twice in four games. Algeria has the most yellow cards with nine.

The Confederation of African Football also says the goal average is 2.17 per game, up on the 2.15 goals per game at the same stage at the last tournament in South Africa. However, it's below the goal average for the five tournaments before 2013.

News sport : Cowboys RB Joseph Randle arrested again

Dallas Cowboys running back Joseph Randle created one of the stranger stories of the 2014 season, when he was arrested for shoplifting underwear and cologne.

Well, he didn't seem to learn much from that event.

Randle was arrested again, early Tuesday in Wichita, Kan., for possession of marijuana according to multiple reports including the Dallas Morning News. The police were responding to a disturbance call at 3 a.m., the Morning News' story said. KAKE in Wichita said it was a domestic violence call. KAKE said Randle and a 22-year-old woman, who is the mother of his child, were arguing. The woman was in the hotel so Randle could see his child, KAKE said.

The Cowboys, via the Morning News, had no immediate comment. Randle had 343 yards on 51 carries last season.

News sport : Recruit flips coin to announce he's signing with Texas (Video)

Chris Warren apparently viewed his college choices as a 50/50 proposition and had no overwhelming desire for either option.

The four-star running back from Rockwall, Texas, was down to Washington and Texas for where he'd play football. He said he chose the Longhorns on National Signing Day because of the flip of a coin, which he performed on stage at his signing ceremony.

He said after his ceremony that the coin flip was real.

To help prove it, there was Washington stuff ready if the coin had landed on the other side.

It's certainly a unique way to pick a school, though if Warren is truly serious about the coin flip deciding his choice, we applaud the authenticity. We're not a fan of prolonged awkward fake drama during signing ceremonies. Be original, be efficient and be authentic. Warren looks like he was all three of those on Wednesday.

News sport : Top defensive tackle recruit Terry Beckner Jr. picks Missouri

Defensive tackle Terry Beckner Jr., is staying close to home.

The four-star recruit from East St. Louis chose Missouri, spurning Auburn, Ohio State and Florida State. Beckner is considered the nation's fifth-best player at his position.

"My heart told me Missouri," said Beckner who teared up during his announcement. "I looked into my heart and I felt Missouri was the best place for me in the end.”

Beckner is a key addition to a Missouri defensive front that has produced NFL-caliber talent year after year. Beckner's versatility and speed work well with Missouri’s line, which often values speed over bulk. Beckner is 6-foot-4, 293 pounds, but is strong enough to play nose tackle. He also runs 4.89-second 40-yard dash. During his senior season at East St. Louis, Beckner had 116 tackles, three sacks and an interception that he returned for a touchdown.

Beckner said he wasn’t solid on his choice until late in the process and the fact that high school teammate Naterace Strong also was attending Missouri helped in his decision.

"It's fair to say that I went back and forth with it (the decision),” Beckner said. “The other schools gave me a lot to consider. I just feel like I have the best of everything with Missouri."

Hammers fined for using Sakho in FA Cup

West Ham United have been fined after Diafra Sakho played in an FA Cup match after withdrawing from Afcon.

|||

Zurich - West Ham United have been fined 100 000 Swiss franc by Fifa following a dispute with the Senegalese FA over Diafra Sakho who played in an FA Cup match having withdrawn from the squad for the African Nations Cup.

West Ham claimed Sakho, who was issued with a reprimand, could not play for Senegal due to a back injury but 18 days after withdrawing from the squad he scored the winner in their FA Cup fourth round win at Bristol City.

Soccer's world governing body announced the sanctions in a statement on Wednesday.

Fifa said that the player was called up by the Senegal FA on Dec. 18 to play in tournament between Jan. 17 and Feb. 8 as well attending their training camp from Jan 5-16 in Morocco.

“The Senegalese FA was informed by West Ham United that Sakho was prevented from playing and travelling by plane due to injury and thus he did not join the Senegal team,” Fifa said.

“On 25 January 2015, the player took part in an official match for his club. Senegal were eliminated from the Africa Cup of Nations 2015 on 27 January 2015.”

Fifa ruled that West Ham and Sakho violated their regulations on players' status and subsequently imposed the fine and the reprimand.

West Ham believed they would be vindicated in the dispute which began when the Premier League club said Sakho could not travel to the tournament in Equatorial Guinea due to the injury.

Senegal then made an official complaint to Fifa about him playing for the Hammers against Bristol City. Two days after he played for West Ham, Senegal lost to Algeria and were eliminated from the tournament.

The London club denied any wrongdoing with co-owner David Sullivan saying the club acted solely on the advice of leading medical professionals.

He said: “Any Fifa hearing will vindicate us, we have done nothing untoward.”

Sakho was left out of West Ham's squad for last weekend's Premier League match at Liverpool with manager Sam Allardyce explaining: “It is not conducive for us to be putting him on the field until it is resolved, sadly.”

Sakho has scored 10 goals in 16 appearances in all competitions for the Hammers after joining them from French club Metz last summer.

News sport : DeMarcus Cousins just sort of watches a Steph Curry-to-Marreese Speights alley-oop

A handful of immediate-reaction thoughts sparked by DeMarcus Cousins straight-up standing still — not even moving a single muscle — to prevent Marreese Speights from catching and throwing down an alley-oop dunk off an inbounds pass from Stephen Curry during the third quarter of the Golden State Warriors' blowout 121-96 win over the Sacramento Kings on Tuesday night:

[Follow Dunks Don't Lie on Tumblr: The best slams from all of basketball]

1. Did he just forget he was on defense and not offense?

2. It's a good thing the collective bargaining agreement has that "no takebacks" provision on All-Star injury replacement selections.

3. That's probably not quite the four-on-five defense that Vivek Ranadivé has in mind.

4. I'll respectfully cede my time in this slot to Rob Mahoney of Sports Illustrated:

5. Somewhere in the darkness, a beard gets something done whilst demanding Cousins be taken into custody for, I don't know, treason? Forgery? Whatever, just take him away, all right?

OK, so, no, this was decidedly not the Sacramento center's finest hour. And yes, it looks even worse when you recall Cousins standing similarly statuesque during a Kings offensive possession in the fourth quarter of a New Year's Day win over the Minnesota Timberwolves:

It's perhaps worth noting, though, that Boogie responded to this glaring blown assignment by scoring five straight points, feeding Rudy Gay for a dunk and setting the screen that sprung Darren Collison for a foul-line runner, sparking a late-third quarter run that briefly got the Kings back within hailing distance heading into the fourth quarter.

And that, with the Kings down 15 early in the fourth, after David Lee blocked Omri Casspi's shot and the Warriors pushed the ball, Cousins raced back in transition for a chase-down block of a Leandro Barbosa layup attempt — one of Cousins' four blocks on the night, to go with three steals, a game-high 26 points and 11 rebounds — only for Speights to pick up the loose ball and deposit the putback because nobody else on Sacramento backtracked to help. So it's not like Cousins' stasis was perpetual. (Plus, for real, he's been better defensively this year!)

That said, Cousins did look somewhat disengaged at multiple junctures on Tuesday, for whatever reason — fatigue from wrestling with the likes of Speights, Andrew Bogut and Festus Ezeli all game, accumulated wear-and-tear from the Kings' renewed commitment to playing uptempo after replacing Michael Malone with Tyrone Corbin (as Cousins recently put it, "With the whole pace thing, things are kind of wacko") or maybe just having a garden-variety rough night at the office. Given the top-to-bottom talent disparity between the Kings, who have now dropped nine of their last 10 to plummet to 17-30, the fourth-worst record in the West, and the Warriors, who have bounced back from back-to-back losses with consecutive blowout wins to improve to a league-leading 38-8, occasional disengagement from your best player's just won't cut it.

Oh, well. Maybe Cousins and Kings fans can take some solace in knowing that Boogie's far from the only player to get caught napping by the Warriors on an inbounds play this year. In fact, as this supercut from Half Court Hoops details, it's actually kind of a specialty of Steve Kerr's squad:

News sport : Report: D'Qwell Jackson punched pizza delivery guy in head, face

Indianapolis Colts linebacker D'Qwell Jackson was arrested for assaulting a pizza delivery driver in Washington D.C. Tuesday night, according to ABC 7 News.

Jackson was arrested and issued a citation for hitting the pizza guy in the face and head. Reportedly, there was an argument over a parking space betwen the men.

The 31-year-old driver told police he told Jackson that he planned to park in the space briefly but that Jackson allegedly ordered the driver to get out of the parking space, using an expletive and then punching the driver mutliple times.

Jackson, 31, is a nine-year veteran in the NFL with the Cleveland Browns and Colts. He signed with the Colts prior to last season and found himself in the middle of the deflate-gate incident when he intercepted a Tom Brady pass in the AFC title game and reportedly felt that the New England Patriots' football was underinflated.

A Colts spokesperson told ABC 7 the team was aware of Jackson's arrest and did not issue a statement.

News sport : Five-star tackle Drew Richmond signs with Tennessee

The top-rated player in the state of Tennessee will play for the Vols.

Drew Richmond, a Rivals five-star offensive tackle from Memphis, signed his National Letter of Intent to attend the University of Tennessee. The 6-foot-5, 323-pound Richmond chose the Vols after decommitting from Ole Miss earlier in the week.

Richmond, the 12th-best player in the nation according to Rivals, originally gave his verbal commitment to Ole Miss back in September, but he took his official visit to Tennessee last weekend and decided to stay in-state. He becomes the fifth offensive lineman to join Tennessee’s highly rated 2015 class.

Richmond is the fourth five-star recruit to sign with Tennessee, joining defensive tackle Kahlil McKenzie (No. 6 overall) defensive end Kyle Phillips (No. 32 overall) and former Alabama running back Alvin Kamara, who played one season at Hutchinson Community College after transferring from Alabama.

Currently, Tennessee’s class is ranked fifth in the country by Rivals.

News sport : Madden shows alternate universe in which Seahawks ran the ball

This is just cruel. EA Sports, after picking the correct score of this year's Super Bowl, decided to go back and twist the knife just a little bit more to ask the question: what if Marshawn Lynch had run the ball from the goal line?

The answer, of course, is that the Seahawks would have scored and won the Super Bowl. There's some quibbling here; the play was on second down, not first, and Jim Nantz and Phil Simms weren't the announcers. But the sight of jubilant Seahawks and despondent Patriots has to break the heart of any Seattle fan. At least they can take some solace in the hope that somewhere, in some alternate universe, their team is a two-time champion.

But if Madden is too sophisticated for you, perhaps you'd prefer the Tecmo Bowl version:

News sport : Greg Cosell's Super Bowl Review: Why Seattle's final play didn't work

Most of the discussion surrounding the Seattle Seahawks’ final offensive play is about the call itself, whether or not it was a mistake to pass the ball on second and goal.

I’d like to show you why the play that was called didn’t work.

Here’s what it looked like before the snap, and what the Seahawks were trying to get. They wanted Ricardo Lockette to run a slant, with Jermaine Kearse’s route providing a natural pick element to make sure New England Patriots cornerback Malcolm Butler couldn’t undercut the route.

(NFL.com screen shot)

It’s easy to know what the Seahawks wanted on the play, because they ran basically the same concept for a touchdown in Week 3 against the Denver Broncos.

The personnel and formation are different. But the concept is the same. Marshawn Lynch ran basically the same route Lockette did in the Super Bowl. Tight end Zach Miller’s route picked off Lynch’s defender and Lynch was wide open.

(NFL.com screen shot)

(NFL.com screen shot)

(NFL.com screen shot)

(NFL.com screen shot)

In my opinion Wilson expected to hit Lockette for a walk-in touchdown, just like the Lynch play. I think Lockette felt the same way. I think this play was put in the game plan against a specific defensive look.

And Butler simply made a great play, with a big assist from Brandon Browner.

Kearse’s route was supposed to prevent Butler from under-cutting the throw. But Browner did a tremendous job jamming him at the line. Then Butler makes a decisive play to jump the route. Butler read the play based on the formation. It’s outstanding formation and play recognition from a backup, especially a rookie.

(NFL.com screen shot)

(NFL.com screen shot)

(NFL.com screen shot)

Basically, Lockette and Wilson weren’t expecting Butler to be there. The play was designed to get Lockette open. But Browner did his job, and Butler didn’t hesitate.

---

Offensively, the Patriots passed the ball 50 times, often with short, quick passes. Of Tom Brady’s 50 passes, 37 traveled less than 10 yards in the air from the line of scrimmage. He was 31-of-37 for 220 yards and two touchdowns on those throws. That negated the Seahawks’ pass rush that can be so effective, and was the biggest reason they won the Super Bowl the previous year against the Denver Broncos.

Seattle switched up its coverages; 31 snaps of zone and 19 of man coverage. New England had some great concepts against both defenses that worked for big plays.

On Brandon LaFell’s 11-yard touchdown, the first score of the game, it was a great route concept against “Cover 3” zone. The slot receiver Julian Edelman ran a quick out. That widened the cornerback Byron Maxwell, and that opened a passing lane to LaFell on a quick slant. The shotgun “power” play action held linebacker Bobby Wagner just enough for Brady to have a window to throw it to LaFell.

It’s a good example of multiple pieces in a play working together to get a receiver open.

(NFL.com screen shot)

(NFL.com screen shot)

(NFL.com screen shot)

(NFL.com screen shot)

Danny Amendola’s 4-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter was another example of combination routes working to get a receiver open for a score. Edelman came from the inside slot and he crossed the face of safety Earl Thomas. That caused Thomas to stop for just a beat. That gave Brady just enough time to make the throw to Amendola, because Thomas was just a little bit late.

(NFL.com screen shot)

(NFL.com screen shot)

(NFL.com screen shot)

(NFL.com screen shot)

Brady surgically beat the Seahawks. He was 13-of-15 for 124 yards and two touchdowns on their final two scoring drives. The defining element of this game was the Seahawks’ inability to generate any consistent pressure on Brady. The Patriots’ game plan was structured to minimize and eliminate it. They executed that plan very well.
