News sport : Recruit flips coin to announce he's signing with Texas (Video)

Chris Warren apparently viewed his college choices as a 50/50 proposition and had no overwhelming desire for either option.

The four-star running back from Rockwall, Texas, was down to Washington and Texas for where he'd play football. He said he chose the Longhorns on National Signing Day because of the flip of a coin, which he performed on stage at his signing ceremony.

He said after his ceremony that the coin flip was real.

To help prove it, there was Washington stuff ready if the coin had landed on the other side.

It's certainly a unique way to pick a school, though if Warren is truly serious about the coin flip deciding his choice, we applaud the authenticity. We're not a fan of prolonged awkward fake drama during signing ceremonies. Be original, be efficient and be authentic. Warren looks like he was all three of those on Wednesday.

News sport : Top defensive tackle recruit Terry Beckner Jr. picks Missouri

Defensive tackle Terry Beckner Jr., is staying close to home.

The four-star recruit from East St. Louis chose Missouri, spurning Auburn, Ohio State and Florida State. Beckner is considered the nation's fifth-best player at his position.

"My heart told me Missouri," said Beckner who teared up during his announcement. "I looked into my heart and I felt Missouri was the best place for me in the end.”

Beckner is a key addition to a Missouri defensive front that has produced NFL-caliber talent year after year. Beckner's versatility and speed work well with Missouri’s line, which often values speed over bulk. Beckner is 6-foot-4, 293 pounds, but is strong enough to play nose tackle. He also runs 4.89-second 40-yard dash. During his senior season at East St. Louis, Beckner had 116 tackles, three sacks and an interception that he returned for a touchdown.

Beckner said he wasn’t solid on his choice until late in the process and the fact that high school teammate Naterace Strong also was attending Missouri helped in his decision.

"It's fair to say that I went back and forth with it (the decision),” Beckner said. “The other schools gave me a lot to consider. I just feel like I have the best of everything with Missouri."

Hammers fined for using Sakho in FA Cup

West Ham United have been fined after Diafra Sakho played in an FA Cup match after withdrawing from Afcon.

|||

Zurich - West Ham United have been fined 100 000 Swiss franc by Fifa following a dispute with the Senegalese FA over Diafra Sakho who played in an FA Cup match having withdrawn from the squad for the African Nations Cup.

West Ham claimed Sakho, who was issued with a reprimand, could not play for Senegal due to a back injury but 18 days after withdrawing from the squad he scored the winner in their FA Cup fourth round win at Bristol City.

Soccer's world governing body announced the sanctions in a statement on Wednesday.

Fifa said that the player was called up by the Senegal FA on Dec. 18 to play in tournament between Jan. 17 and Feb. 8 as well attending their training camp from Jan 5-16 in Morocco.

“The Senegalese FA was informed by West Ham United that Sakho was prevented from playing and travelling by plane due to injury and thus he did not join the Senegal team,” Fifa said.

“On 25 January 2015, the player took part in an official match for his club. Senegal were eliminated from the Africa Cup of Nations 2015 on 27 January 2015.”

Fifa ruled that West Ham and Sakho violated their regulations on players' status and subsequently imposed the fine and the reprimand.

West Ham believed they would be vindicated in the dispute which began when the Premier League club said Sakho could not travel to the tournament in Equatorial Guinea due to the injury.

Senegal then made an official complaint to Fifa about him playing for the Hammers against Bristol City. Two days after he played for West Ham, Senegal lost to Algeria and were eliminated from the tournament.

The London club denied any wrongdoing with co-owner David Sullivan saying the club acted solely on the advice of leading medical professionals.

He said: “Any Fifa hearing will vindicate us, we have done nothing untoward.”

Sakho was left out of West Ham's squad for last weekend's Premier League match at Liverpool with manager Sam Allardyce explaining: “It is not conducive for us to be putting him on the field until it is resolved, sadly.”

Sakho has scored 10 goals in 16 appearances in all competitions for the Hammers after joining them from French club Metz last summer.

News sport : DeMarcus Cousins just sort of watches a Steph Curry-to-Marreese Speights alley-oop

A handful of immediate-reaction thoughts sparked by DeMarcus Cousins straight-up standing still — not even moving a single muscle — to prevent Marreese Speights from catching and throwing down an alley-oop dunk off an inbounds pass from Stephen Curry during the third quarter of the Golden State Warriors' blowout 121-96 win over the Sacramento Kings on Tuesday night:

[Follow Dunks Don't Lie on Tumblr: The best slams from all of basketball]

1. Did he just forget he was on defense and not offense?

2. It's a good thing the collective bargaining agreement has that "no takebacks" provision on All-Star injury replacement selections.

3. That's probably not quite the four-on-five defense that Vivek Ranadivé has in mind.

4. I'll respectfully cede my time in this slot to Rob Mahoney of Sports Illustrated:

5. Somewhere in the darkness, a beard gets something done whilst demanding Cousins be taken into custody for, I don't know, treason? Forgery? Whatever, just take him away, all right?

OK, so, no, this was decidedly not the Sacramento center's finest hour. And yes, it looks even worse when you recall Cousins standing similarly statuesque during a Kings offensive possession in the fourth quarter of a New Year's Day win over the Minnesota Timberwolves:

It's perhaps worth noting, though, that Boogie responded to this glaring blown assignment by scoring five straight points, feeding Rudy Gay for a dunk and setting the screen that sprung Darren Collison for a foul-line runner, sparking a late-third quarter run that briefly got the Kings back within hailing distance heading into the fourth quarter.

And that, with the Kings down 15 early in the fourth, after David Lee blocked Omri Casspi's shot and the Warriors pushed the ball, Cousins raced back in transition for a chase-down block of a Leandro Barbosa layup attempt — one of Cousins' four blocks on the night, to go with three steals, a game-high 26 points and 11 rebounds — only for Speights to pick up the loose ball and deposit the putback because nobody else on Sacramento backtracked to help. So it's not like Cousins' stasis was perpetual. (Plus, for real, he's been better defensively this year!)

That said, Cousins did look somewhat disengaged at multiple junctures on Tuesday, for whatever reason — fatigue from wrestling with the likes of Speights, Andrew Bogut and Festus Ezeli all game, accumulated wear-and-tear from the Kings' renewed commitment to playing uptempo after replacing Michael Malone with Tyrone Corbin (as Cousins recently put it, "With the whole pace thing, things are kind of wacko") or maybe just having a garden-variety rough night at the office. Given the top-to-bottom talent disparity between the Kings, who have now dropped nine of their last 10 to plummet to 17-30, the fourth-worst record in the West, and the Warriors, who have bounced back from back-to-back losses with consecutive blowout wins to improve to a league-leading 38-8, occasional disengagement from your best player's just won't cut it.

Oh, well. Maybe Cousins and Kings fans can take some solace in knowing that Boogie's far from the only player to get caught napping by the Warriors on an inbounds play this year. In fact, as this supercut from Half Court Hoops details, it's actually kind of a specialty of Steve Kerr's squad:

News sport : Report: D'Qwell Jackson punched pizza delivery guy in head, face

Indianapolis Colts linebacker D'Qwell Jackson was arrested for assaulting a pizza delivery driver in Washington D.C. Tuesday night, according to ABC 7 News.

Jackson was arrested and issued a citation for hitting the pizza guy in the face and head. Reportedly, there was an argument over a parking space betwen the men.

The 31-year-old driver told police he told Jackson that he planned to park in the space briefly but that Jackson allegedly ordered the driver to get out of the parking space, using an expletive and then punching the driver mutliple times.

Jackson, 31, is a nine-year veteran in the NFL with the Cleveland Browns and Colts. He signed with the Colts prior to last season and found himself in the middle of the deflate-gate incident when he intercepted a Tom Brady pass in the AFC title game and reportedly felt that the New England Patriots' football was underinflated.

A Colts spokesperson told ABC 7 the team was aware of Jackson's arrest and did not issue a statement.

News sport : Five-star tackle Drew Richmond signs with Tennessee

The top-rated player in the state of Tennessee will play for the Vols.

Drew Richmond, a Rivals five-star offensive tackle from Memphis, signed his National Letter of Intent to attend the University of Tennessee. The 6-foot-5, 323-pound Richmond chose the Vols after decommitting from Ole Miss earlier in the week.

Richmond, the 12th-best player in the nation according to Rivals, originally gave his verbal commitment to Ole Miss back in September, but he took his official visit to Tennessee last weekend and decided to stay in-state. He becomes the fifth offensive lineman to join Tennessee’s highly rated 2015 class.

Richmond is the fourth five-star recruit to sign with Tennessee, joining defensive tackle Kahlil McKenzie (No. 6 overall) defensive end Kyle Phillips (No. 32 overall) and former Alabama running back Alvin Kamara, who played one season at Hutchinson Community College after transferring from Alabama.

Currently, Tennessee’s class is ranked fifth in the country by Rivals.

News sport : Madden shows alternate universe in which Seahawks ran the ball

This is just cruel. EA Sports, after picking the correct score of this year's Super Bowl, decided to go back and twist the knife just a little bit more to ask the question: what if Marshawn Lynch had run the ball from the goal line?

The answer, of course, is that the Seahawks would have scored and won the Super Bowl. There's some quibbling here; the play was on second down, not first, and Jim Nantz and Phil Simms weren't the announcers. But the sight of jubilant Seahawks and despondent Patriots has to break the heart of any Seattle fan. At least they can take some solace in the hope that somewhere, in some alternate universe, their team is a two-time champion.

But if Madden is too sophisticated for you, perhaps you'd prefer the Tecmo Bowl version:

News sport : Greg Cosell's Super Bowl Review: Why Seattle's final play didn't work

Most of the discussion surrounding the Seattle Seahawks’ final offensive play is about the call itself, whether or not it was a mistake to pass the ball on second and goal.

I’d like to show you why the play that was called didn’t work.

Here’s what it looked like before the snap, and what the Seahawks were trying to get. They wanted Ricardo Lockette to run a slant, with Jermaine Kearse’s route providing a natural pick element to make sure New England Patriots cornerback Malcolm Butler couldn’t undercut the route.

(NFL.com screen shot)

It’s easy to know what the Seahawks wanted on the play, because they ran basically the same concept for a touchdown in Week 3 against the Denver Broncos.

The personnel and formation are different. But the concept is the same. Marshawn Lynch ran basically the same route Lockette did in the Super Bowl. Tight end Zach Miller’s route picked off Lynch’s defender and Lynch was wide open.

(NFL.com screen shot)

(NFL.com screen shot)

(NFL.com screen shot)

(NFL.com screen shot)

In my opinion Wilson expected to hit Lockette for a walk-in touchdown, just like the Lynch play. I think Lockette felt the same way. I think this play was put in the game plan against a specific defensive look.

And Butler simply made a great play, with a big assist from Brandon Browner.

Kearse’s route was supposed to prevent Butler from under-cutting the throw. But Browner did a tremendous job jamming him at the line. Then Butler makes a decisive play to jump the route. Butler read the play based on the formation. It’s outstanding formation and play recognition from a backup, especially a rookie.

(NFL.com screen shot)

(NFL.com screen shot)

(NFL.com screen shot)

Basically, Lockette and Wilson weren’t expecting Butler to be there. The play was designed to get Lockette open. But Browner did his job, and Butler didn’t hesitate.

---

Offensively, the Patriots passed the ball 50 times, often with short, quick passes. Of Tom Brady’s 50 passes, 37 traveled less than 10 yards in the air from the line of scrimmage. He was 31-of-37 for 220 yards and two touchdowns on those throws. That negated the Seahawks’ pass rush that can be so effective, and was the biggest reason they won the Super Bowl the previous year against the Denver Broncos.

Seattle switched up its coverages; 31 snaps of zone and 19 of man coverage. New England had some great concepts against both defenses that worked for big plays.

On Brandon LaFell’s 11-yard touchdown, the first score of the game, it was a great route concept against “Cover 3” zone. The slot receiver Julian Edelman ran a quick out. That widened the cornerback Byron Maxwell, and that opened a passing lane to LaFell on a quick slant. The shotgun “power” play action held linebacker Bobby Wagner just enough for Brady to have a window to throw it to LaFell.

It’s a good example of multiple pieces in a play working together to get a receiver open.

(NFL.com screen shot)

(NFL.com screen shot)

(NFL.com screen shot)

(NFL.com screen shot)

Danny Amendola’s 4-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter was another example of combination routes working to get a receiver open for a score. Edelman came from the inside slot and he crossed the face of safety Earl Thomas. That caused Thomas to stop for just a beat. That gave Brady just enough time to make the throw to Amendola, because Thomas was just a little bit late.

(NFL.com screen shot)

(NFL.com screen shot)

(NFL.com screen shot)

(NFL.com screen shot)

Brady surgically beat the Seahawks. He was 13-of-15 for 124 yards and two touchdowns on their final two scoring drives. The defining element of this game was the Seahawks’ inability to generate any consistent pressure on Brady. The Patriots’ game plan was structured to minimize and eliminate it. They executed that plan very well.

News sport : Top TE recruit Chris Clark chooses UCLA over Michigan

Jim Harbaugh's arrival at Michigan didn't ultimately persuade tight end Chris Clark to choose the Wolverines.

Clark, a native from Avon, Conn., chose UCLA over Michigan.

He's a four-star recruit according to Rivals and the top TE in the country. He told BruinSportsReport.com why he chose UCLA.

"I just felt at home when I went on my visit," Clark said. "Clearly it’s different, I’m an east coast guy but it was pretty easy to get adjusted to what it’s like here in California. The coaching staff is unbelievable. I have an unbelievable relationship with Coach Mora. I haven’t been this close with a coach ever and we’ve only been talking — he started recruiting me earlier this year. It hasn’t been that long of a relationship but we’ve just gotten really close really fast."

Michigan has TE Jake Butt returning, though with the loss of Devin Funchess, Clark could have been a contributor right away had he chosen Michigan.

He wasn't the only top player to choose UCLA Wednesday morning either. Five-star running back Soso Jamabo from Plano, Texas, chose the Bruins. He's a five-star running back and the top player in Texas according to Rivals. He seems excited about his choice.

News sport : UCLA simplifies signing day by offering e-signature option for recruits

(Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports) On one day each year, the fax machine lives on.

Despite the countless forms of technology that are at the tips of our fingers on a daily basis, the fax machine still reigns supreme on the first Wednesday of every February in the college football world – National Signing Day.

High school prospects across the country will make their verbal commitments official on Wednesday, and most will do so by sending their National Letter of Intent (NLI) via fax to their future university.

One school is encouraging a better method.

For the second straight year, UCLA is providing its football recruits the option to submit their NLI using Barracuda SignNow, an application that allows users to sign documents via their computer, cell phone or tablet.

Chris Hawkins, GM and Founder of Barracuda SignNow, says the process is simple.

“With Barracuda SignNow the recruits get a unique secure email containing the link to their NLI,” Hawkins told Yahoo Sports. “From there the areas that they need to complete are designated, and they’re able to complete the NLI with signature on their phone, tablet, or laptop. Schools get the documents back instantly with detailed audit logs that track every action including date, timestamps and IP addresses.”

Responses have been positive from both the recruits and the UCLA football staff.

“The football staff at UCLA is enthusiastic about electronic signatures and using technology to the fullest,” Pat Girardi, UCLA Football Director of Player Personel, said in an email to Yahoo Sports.

Girardi says there haven’t been any issues using the technology. In fact, the process is far smoother than the traditional fax.

“The electronic signature option actually provides a much quicker platform to correct mistakes with the signing process,” Girardi said.

Girardi said UCLA is always looking for “a better way” to get the job done. When it came to National Signing Day, adapting to this new technology and offering it to recruits seemed like the natural thing to do.

“It is in UCLA’s DNA to be on the cutting edge of technology, try new things and look for a better way to accomplish our objectives,” Girardi said. “By embracing the electronic signature option for our recruits and their families, we have provided a straightforward and efficient method for them to finalize one of the most important decisions of their lives.”

Hawkins said most recruits who had the option to sign electronically did so. Additionally, Hawkins there were recruits who even “pulled out tablets on their local TV broadcasts” to sign their NLI.

With UCLA in its second year offering this service, Girardi thinks more schools will follow suit.

“As with most strides forward, there are early adopters. And then the rest catch up down the road,” Girardi said.

Hawkins says it’s a “no-brainer” and that other schools throughout the country have reached out Barracuda SignNow about potential signing day partnerships.

“At this point college-aged students have grown up with the internet, they never lived in a world that wasn’t connected,” Hawkins said. “Modern services like Barracuda SignNow provide advantages of speed and security that fax machines can’t offer, and will never run out of ink or get paper jams.”

News sport : One-time middle school USC commit David Sills signs with West Virginia

Four-star quarterback David Sills made his letter of intent with West Virginia official on Wednesday.

Sills is the No. 15 pro-style quarterback in the country according to Rivals, though he's known for more than that. He was the quarterback who committed to USC in 2010 when the Trojans were coached by Lane Kiffin and Kiffin offered him a scholarship. Yes, Sills was a seventh-grader when he made that commitment.

He had a personal coach in middle school and the coach, Steve Clarkson told ESPN in 2010 that "His skill set is off the chart. I've never seen anyone at his age do what he's been able to do."

And yes, Clarkson said Sills was breaking down NFL tape as a kid still more than two years away from being able to drive.

Sills held his commitment until 2014 when he decommitted from USC. He took a visit to Alabama, where Kiffin is now the offensive coordinator, but settled on West Virginia and coach Dana Holgorsen soon after decommitting from USC.

“Everything I looked for in a college … all pointed right back to West Virginia,” Sills said shortly after choosing West Virginia via Delaware Today. “I have two former teammates there—one that I’m very, very close with. The coaches were always straight and upfront with me, and said I could come in as a freshman and compete for the starting job.”

Khune's return poses conundrum

As Itumeleng Khune returns to fitness, Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter has tough decisions to make in the goalkeeping department.

|||

Johannesburg - As Kaizer Chiefs captain Itumeleng Khune returns to full fitness, coach Stuart Baxter says he has some tough decisions to make in the goalkeeping department.

“There is no doubt that when Itu is 100 percent fit, he is one of the best goalkeepers on the continent,” Baxter said in Johannesburg on Wednesday.

However, he said back-up goalkeepers Brilliant Khuzwayo and Reeyad Pieterse had deputised with aplomb during Khune's long injury lay-off.

In the five months Khune was out of action, Chiefs enjoyed an impressive unbeaten streak with Khuzwayo the preferred man between the posts.

Baxter said he would make a decision which he believed would be fair to all those involved.

“Both Brilliant and Reeyad have been tremendous during Itu's absence. We still have to manage how we do things the right way.

“Itu's fitness level will have to be considered as well as the correct timing to throw him back in. I have to do what is fair and what is right for the team.”

Amakhosi remained unbeaten in the league with 14 wins and four draws.

Last year, they also set a new domestic record of 15 consecutive wins across all competitions - a run which yielded the MTN8 title.

The second half of the season would provide a tougher challenge for the club, also competing in the Caf Champions League as well as the Nedbank Cup.

The log leaders return to action with a league encounter against Bloemfontein Celtic at the Free State Stadium on February 11.

They open their continental account with a clash against Botswana's Township Rollers on February 14 at the FNB Stadium.

News sport : Golf pioneer Charlie Sifford dead at 92

Charlie Sifford, the first black man to play on the PGA Tour, passed away Tuesday. He was 92.

A pioneer in golf, Sifford earned a place among golf's elite players after the PGA of America desegregated in 1961. He won twice in his PGA Tour career, including the 1967 Greater Hartford Open and 1969 Los Angeles Open. He won two senior titles.

Sifford had recently suffered a stroke and was battling a bacterial infection in a Cleveland hospital.

The Northern Trust Open, the modern name of the L.A. Open, created an exemption in 2009 named after Sifford designed to offer an opportunity to compete in the event for a player who represents furthering golf's diversity and who would otherwise not qualify for the tournament. The exemption has since been renamed the Northern Trust Open Exemption.

In 2001, Sifford became the first black golfer inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame.

Last November, he became just the third golfer, behind Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer, to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor.

Baxter ponders change in style at Chiefs

Kaizer Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter says he may be forced to change Amakhosi's playing style after the departure of Kingston Nkhatha.

|||

Johannesburg - Kaizer Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter says he may be forced to change Amakhosi's playing style after the departure of regular striker Kingston Nkhatha.

“In our squad we do not have a player that is similar to Kingston,” Baxter said in Naturena on Wednesday.

In a much-publicised move, Nkhatha jumped ship to SuperSport United during the January transfer-window period.

Baxter said the team was still trying to find answers to a number of burning issues.

“There are questions we are trying to figure out. Can we tweak a player in Kingston's mould to play main striker? Can Bernard Parker play that role? Do we change the shape and play with two or three strikers? We are still working on it.”

With the offensive formation of Nkhatha as lone striker surrounded by attack-minded midfielders, Chiefs blitzed through the first-half of the season surging to a 15 points lead in the Premiership.

Having supported Nkhatha through a period of heckling by fans, Baxter said he had no hard feelings after the bulky striker abandoned ship.

“I defended him from the booing just like I would do with any of my players,” Baxter said.

“Him leaving was a different issue because he was looking out for his future, which I can accept.”

The former Bafana Bafana mentor believed there was still time to consider the various possibilities for his team's formation, but he would not rush the decision.

“All of the options I mentioned were possible. It's just a case of looking to see how we get going once the league resumes.”

The recently-signed David Zulu would not be a direct replacement for Nkhatha, he said.

“David is in by no way the same player as Kingston. He has different qualities but he is a player in which we see a lot of potential.

“The plan is not to throw him into the deep end and expect him to swim with the sharks.”

Amakhosi were the only unbeaten side in the league following 14 wins and four draws and, having gone undefeated, Baxter's thinking was not to set targets for the second half of the season.

“I'm not the kind of coach who aims for certain points in blocks of games. We go out and approach each game as it comes.

“It become dangerous when you start to count the number of games we've won.”

The second half of the season would provide a tougher challenge for Amakhosi as they also compete in the Caf Champions League and the Nedbank Cup.

The log leaders would return to action in the league against Bloemfontein Celtic at the Free State Stadium on February 11.

They open their continental account with a clash against Botswana's Township Rollers on February 14 at the FNB Stadium.

News sport : Left Shark 'commits' to play at Boise State

Left Shark knows the blue turf at Boise State's stadium is not water, right?

Coach Bryan Harsin posted that the shark, famous for it's uncoordinated dance moves during Katy Perry's halftime performance at Super Bowl XLIX, had committed Tuesday, one day before National Signing Day.

No word on Left Shark's Rivals rank, but we're going to guess it's somewhat like a baseball player had has severe water/land performance splits. We're also assuming that since Left Shark is a shark, the NCAA's social media commitment guidelines don't apply to it. Coaches can't mention a recruit by name on Twitter until the letter of intent is officially signed.

There's also no word on if the commitment will change Perry's college football allegiance. She's an Ole Miss fan (one of her managers went there) and was in attendance at the Alabama-Ole Miss game in Oxford in 2014.
