News sport : Jeremy Lane victimizes Tom Brady with early INT but hurt on play

Jeremy Lane backed up his trash talk with a huge early play in Super Bowl XLIX.

The New England Patriots were poised to score and take the early lead on the Seattle Seahawks, with a long drive that was approaching eight minutes on their second possession by dinking and dunking their way down the field.

But Tom Brady threw a horrible pass in the end zone that Lane intercepted right at the goal line. He returned the ball to the Seattle 14-yard line, injuring his left wrist on the play. It appeared Brady was targeting Julian Edelman, but he was heavily covered.

Lane, who is the Seahawks' nickel corner and a special-teams ace, called out the Patriots' Rob Gronkowski prior to the Super Bowl.

Lane has been carted to the locker room for X-rays on his wrist and is listed as doubtful to return.

Ivory Coast beat Algeria to reach semis

A Wilfried Bony brace and a late Gervinho effort secured a win for Ivory Coast, sending them through to the Afcon semi-finals.

|||

Malabo - A Wilfried Bony brace and a late Gervinho effort secured a 3-1 victory for Ivory Coast on Sunday, sending them through to the African Nations Cup semi-finals at the expense of Algeria.

Manchester City's Bony was the game's outstanding individual, opening the scoring on 26 minutes after heading home a fantastic Max Gradel cross.

Algeria fought back into the match through El Arabi Soudani's 51st minute goal after again exposing Ivory Coast's defensive fragility. However, Bony put the Ivorians back on top, leaping superbly to power a Yaya Toure free kick past Rais Mbolhi on 68 minutes.

Despite several late scares, the Ivorians clung on to their lead, with Gervinho adding a third in the dying moments, and advance to face Democratic Republic of Congo in the first semi-final in Bata on Wednesday.

Ghana power into Afcon semis

A wonder goal from Christian Atsu helped Ghana into their fifth straight Afcon semi-final with a win over Guinea.

|||

Equatorial Guinea - A wonder goal from Christian Atsu helped Avram Grant's Ghana into their fifth straight African Nations Cup semi-final with a 3-0 victory over disappointing Guinea on Sunday.

Ghana will meet hosts Equatorial Guinea in the last four.

Despite starting the tournament slowly, Grant's Ghana are growing in confidence and class - both of which were evident in this convincing display.

“We showed a lot of quality today, and that's important for this team,” Grant said.

“Every game we are better than the game before. There were chances, many chances and we scored beautiful goals.”

Atsu opened the scoring for the Group C winners in the third minute and Kwesi Appiah, making his first competitive start, doubled their lead on the stroke of halftime, firing home from close range after a defensive howler.

Atsu then added a sublime third midway through the second half, with a long-range effort which looks likely to be a contender for goal of the tournament.

“It's true, we've improving,” reflected Atsu. “We went for the win and we worked hard for it, not because Guinea are a bad team.”

Not since 2006 have Ghana failed to reach the last four of the Nations Cup, and defeated Guinea coach Michel Dussuyer praised Grant's team, albeit questioning if things might have been different for his own.

“Ghana has potential difference-makers, if we make mistakes, we can't advance. If you consider the first goal, then the second, just before halftime, it becomes near-impossible to come back.

“We complicated the match with that goal right at the beginning, there was an immediate loss of confidence, then the gift, things become very complicated against a talented team like Ghana.”

Ghana were convincing, but Guinea, who only progressed from Group D following the drawing of lots with Mali, did not do themselves justice and looked weary throughout.

Grant's side celebrated their goals jubilantly with new choreographed dances and were able to see out the contest without much incident as Guinea, whose goalkeeper Naby Yattara was sent off for a late flying kick at Asamoah Gyan, faded.

News sport : Roger Goodell turns down NBC for interview as Obama, Brady speak

During the marathon Super Bowl pregame show, Tom Brady spoke to NBC's Bob Costas for a direct interview about one of the more humiliating moments of his career. The President of the United States held a sit-down (well, stand-up in the White House kitchen) interview. But NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, the man in charge of this entire enterprise, the face of an organization that's taken more hits this year than a Jacksonville quarterback, declined the opportunity to speak.

You don't need a road map to see the hypocrisy at work here. Goodell and the NFL expect Marshawn Lynch to sit for three different interviews during Super Bowl week alone, yet Goodell only makes himself available for one lone press conference on Friday afternoon, the point at which Super Bowl Week fatigue has set in.

[Watch the Super Bowl live on Yahoo Sports and NBC Sports - Sunday at 6 p.m. ET]

Look, it's not like Goodell is suddenly going to admit to malfeasance in every element of the game, but still: in his "state of the game" address, Goodell claimed that he was "available to the media almost every day." Many members of the NFL media laughed at that assertion:

This only furthers the ongoing perception that the NFL is doing all of us a favor by deigning to let us watch the Super Bowl, and that any questions you might have for Goodell are inappropriate and you should be ashamed of yourself for even asking. That approach might have worked well enough even a year ago, but after a season in which the NFL looked bewildered and incompetent at best, deliberately deceptive at worst, a little image management could've helped.

As for the other interviews: Obama offered up a bit of lightweight political chatter (but no prediction) in his interview. Brady seemed more than a little evasive about the deflate-gate controversy in his:

Say it with us, Tom: "No, I had nothing to do with any inflation or deflation of balls, and I am completely innocent of any and all allegations."

Bottom line, though, both agreed to speak. It's too bad Roger Goodell didn't understand it would've been a good idea for him to do the same.

News sport : MLB Network goes behind-the-scenes of Hall of Fame election day

Hall of Fame election day can be an exhilarating or deflating experience for known candidates. On Tuesday night, MLB Network Presents will give us rare access and a unique perspective of the highs, lows, anxieties, anticipation and, for those so honored, the joys that go into those surreal and special moments with the premiere of Hall of Fame Pitchers: Smoltz & Pedro.

Hosted once again by Bob Costas, the fourth installment of MLB Network's new documentary series will provide an in-depth look at the life-changing phone calls received by John Smoltz and Pedro Martinez, who were both informed of their election into the Baseball Hall of Fame along with Craig Biggo and Randy Johnson back on Jan. 6, as well as the aftermath.

[Yahoo Sports Fantasy Baseball: Sign up and join a league today!]

Based on the press release, it sounds like the cameras were able to pick up some remarkable footage, especially when Martinez returned home to the Dominican Republic.

The program begins with a behind-the-scenes look at Martinez’s election to the National Baseball Hall of Fame, including the moment he got the call and the enormous celebration in his native Dominican Republic with fans and family. Using highlights from 18 hours of exclusive footage, the episode features Martinez’s trip to New York immediately following the election announcement, and the hero’s welcome he received upon arriving at the Dominican Republic’s Aeropuerto Internacional Las Americas, about which Martinez says, “After I hugged my mom and my brother and I told them, ‘Mission accomplished,’ it was like, ‘This is a party now.’”

In what will likely be the coolest feature on the show, a camera was along with Martinez as he traveled the streets of his hometown, Manoguayabo, during a parade thrown in his honor. Also included will be Martinez's trip to the National Palace to meet with Danilo Medina, the President of the Dominican Republic.

For all his accomplishments on the field, which are rightfully being recognized and acknowledged, these are monumental moments in his Martinez's life that he likely never imagined would happen, let alone be shared with the world. The emotions involved should be off the charts.

Another segment will feature MLB Network host and play-by-play man Matt Vasgersian sitting down with his colleague and new Hall of Famer John Smoltz for a one-on-one interview record at Foley’s New York Pub and Restaurant in New York City. Among the topic covered will be Smoltz's reputation as a big-game pitcher, his transition from All-Star starter to All-Star closer and then back again, and also how he envisions his speech going in July.

As in past episodes, this sounds like 60 minutes well spent. Especially for those of us counting down the weeks, days and even hours until spring training.

News sport : Oscar Robertson backs a measure that would legalize marijuana in Ohio

Legalization of marijuana for medical or personal use has failed to gain a major foothold in most Midwestern states. Illinois, Michigan and Minnesota all allow medical marijuana use, but no other Midwestern state and certainly no southern state have dug in to allow for legalization of pot under any circumstances, despite changing attitudes regarding the drug.

For decades, the state of Ohio has been seen as the America’s bellwether of sorts, a massive state that shares equal amounts of rural burghs, urban districts, and college towns. This split down the middle of typical left/right thinking and voting habits is why Presidential candidates focus so intently on the state during the latter days of their drive toward the election.

It’s also why this unlikely scenario is so interesting. Basketball Hall of Famer and longtime Cincinnati legend Oscar Robertson has tossed his support behind the group known as ResponsibleOhio, calling for the legalization of medical marijuana, and supporting the group’s bid to create legal and taxable outlets for citizens to buy marijuana for personal use.

From Robertson’s statement, via Northeast Ohio Media Group’s Jackie Borchardt:

"It's a terrible feeling when you can't help someone suffering from cancer or another debilitating medical condition -- I know from personal experience," Robertson said. "But medical marijuana can give our loved ones relief."

Robertson didn’t fully lend his support to the legalization of personal use, but several other prominent Ohioans (including former Brown and Bengal Frostee Rucker and designer Nanette Lepore) joined a cadre of less-famous but quite influential businessmen and academics to encourage support for the flat-taxed dispensaries, pointing out that the 15 percent tax would go a long way toward raising significant revenue for the state.

Reaction to ResponsibleOhio’s intentions to make the legalization of marijuana a priority in the Nov. 2015 ballot has, predictably, fallen in lockstep with the typical party lines. Robertson, who recently overcame prostate cancer, would not seem to have as much sway as elected Republican leaders, but the Cincinnati Bearcat legend, former Cincinnati Royal and longtime social activist can’t help but aid in the cause.

ResponsbleOhio’s Executive Director confirmed as much:

"The campaign is honored to have such well-respected businesswomen and men, as well as patient advocates supporting our effort to offer a common-sense solution to Ohio's failed drug policies," said ResponsibleOhio's Executive Director Ian James in a release.

The group and its supporters have nine months to change quite a few minds.

News sport : Carmelo Anthony says he and Kobe Bryant questioned if they really wanted to play together

The Los Angeles Lakers visit New York on Sunday afternoon to participate in the saddest of all bowls, with an injured and dispirited 13-34 Laker team ta(n)king on a just-as-dispirited and just-as-intent-on-tanking 9-38 Knicks team. The visiting Lakers are on pace for 23 wins, while the hometown Knicks are defending their famed turf with a winning percentage that would leak out to 18 wins over the course of a full season. That mark would serve as an all-time franchise low for New York, which has worked in pro ball since 1946, and the lowest-ever mark for the “Los Angeles” version of the Lakers, spanning some 55 years.

These are latter days, we know, odd for two franchises that feature two superstars who were voted into the starting lineup for this month’s All-Star Game. Kobe Bryant and Carmelo Anthony were only voted into those positions because of their fame and status as a top scorer on teams with major followings, but Anthony has at least had a fringe All-Star year at times while working through myriad injuries, and Bryant at one point was amongst the NBA’s top scorers even if he was going about his work in dubious fashion.

And both had a chance to pair up last summer, when Anthony was an unrestricted free agent, and Kobe Bryant was purportedly looking to pair with one other superstar in a quest to get back into the championship picture.

Or playoffs, even.

Prior to Sunday’s contest, Marc Berman at the New York Post quoted Anthony recollection of the July 2014 meeting:

“They came in at the 25th hour, they swooped in there,’’ said Anthony, who owns an apartment in Los Angeles. “It was a great visit. The conversations I had with Kobe was just man to man. We both had to come to reality and say, ‘Is this what we really want?’ And it didn’t happen.

“We’ve been talking for a long time, man, especially this summer, just me and him communicating, and talking and being honest with one another as friends and brothers should be. It was a lot going on there on his behalf and my behalf trying to figure everything out.’’

So Carmelo and Kobe both decided that it wasn’t going to work out. This coming on the heels of this:

… and Kobe’s open and obvious recruitment of Dallas guard Rajon Rondo, who is shooting 37 percent over his last nine games with the Mavericks, taking just 19 free throws as a Maverick, making five.

Kobe does have a type.

[Follow Dunks Don't Lie on Tumblr: The best slams from all of basketball]

Bryant and Anthony weren’t wrong, despite what Carmelo said was a “great presentation” at Anthony’s house in Los Angeles. The Knick forward would be turning down around $34 million to move to Los Angeles, and even Bryant at his most blustery would admit that a team filled with Kobe and Anthony and a host of spare parts would only be marginally better than the team that plays in Los Angeles – one featuring just Kobe and a host of spare parts.

Sadly the team doesn’t even currently feature Kobe, who is out nine months with a torn rotator cuff in his right shoulder – his third consecutive major season-ending injury. Bryant is not going to leave $25 million in guaranteed cash on the table to walk away from the game next season, but his attempts to go out on his own well-heeled terms have been deadening to watch. Especially to Carmelo, who dealt with a less severe version of Bryant’s injury two years ago. From the Post:

“It’s tough to see my brother go through that right now this late in his career,’’ Anthony said. “It kills me to see him going through that.’’

There is a silver lining, however gray.

For the first time in either franchise’s history, the two teams are working through an obvious rebuilding situation. The Lakers went into full tank mode before the season, acquiring draft picks and only signing player to either one-year deals or contracts with team options that could expire during the 2015 offseason. The draft pick protections stipulated by the 2012 Steve Nash deal made it of paramount importance that the team slide into the lower five slots in this year’s draft, otherwise the franchise would have to give up their 2015 selection to Phoenix. Despite team president Jeannie Buss stating that it doesn’t really matter when the Lakers give up a pick to the Suns.

The squad may even take the same approach this summer, with few obvious boffo free agent candidates seemingly in line to join Kobe Bryant in what will probably be his final season. That move would leave the Lakers with Julius Randle, a high end 2015 draft pick, and scores of cap space heading into the post-Kobe era. If the Lakers bottom out into the top three in the 2016 draft lottery, they’ll also get to keep that selection from Phoenix (the pick would go to the Suns in 2017, free of restrictions).

Is that an inglorious way to end Kobe’s career? Sure. It’s not like the last two calendar years have been anything resembling appropriate, though.

The Knicks haven’t had the same trade success as the Lakers so far. Whereas Los Angeles managed to gobble a first-round pick from Houston for taking on Jeremy Lin’s contract, New York made moves last summer to help the team shoot for a mediocre record, and they failed to take on any first-rounders in deals that sent the much-admired Iman Shumpert and the still-potent (at times) J.R. Smith to Cleveland.

Still, the team is finally committing to a slow rebuild and change of culture, currently ranked with the third-best odds at the top overall pick this year (Los Angeles is one spot behind them), and moving past the win-now-at-all-costs ethos that has marred the James Dolan years and even the years and decades prior to the enfant terrible taking over the famed franchise. Even when former general manager Donnie Walsh attempted to work through an intelligent rebuild, Dolan and unceremonious crony Isiah Thomas overruled the ostensible GM in pushing far too many assets out in dealing for Anthony far too early.

As for Carmelo and Kobe, it’s certain that the pairing wasn’t going to help either side. It’s unclear, exactly, as to what sort of roster an aging yet still bullheaded Bryant would be able to work successfully on, or if he’d even give in to such a setup.

Anthony? That’s a lot of money to turn down to work in the City That Never Sleeps, even if his surroundings are less than ideal.

The trick is going to be conjuring ideal surroundings in the years to come, in the face of two massive fan bases that are not exactly pleased at having their nationally televised Knicks/Lakers game taken off ABC in favor of a celebrity bowling tournament.

News sport : Joe Kelly boldly predicts he'll win AL Cy Young in 2015

Confidence is a key to success in all of life's endeavors, but there's a different level of confidence that's required to be a successful pitcher in Major League Baseball.

Good news, Boston Red Sox fans, it appears that starter Joe Kelly has that confidence and then some.

The 26-year-old right-hander, who was acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals last season along with Allen Craig in exchange for John Lackey, went on record at the Red Sox' Winter Weekend event on Friday proclaiming that he'll not only stick in Boston's starting rotation, but will rise to the top of the American League pitching heap in 2015 and win the Cy Young award.

Yes, that Joe Kelly. He of 17 major league appearances in 2014 with an acceptable 4.20 ERA. He of the career 111 ERA+ in three seasons, which is fine but certainly not indicative of future dominance. That's the guy we're talking about, and he wasn't shy about reiterating his confidence to all members of the Boston media.

[Yahoo Sports Fantasy Baseball: Sign up and join a league today!]

From WEEI.com:

But there it was. Kelly, unannounced, strolling over to our WEEI broadcast setup during the Red Sox' Winter Weekend at Foxwoods, grabbing one of the headsets and then letting out the words, "I want your listeners to know, I’m going to win the Cy Young this year. Just letting everyone know so when I win it you heard it here first."

After the radio interview, Kelly went upstairs to the media room and reiterated his stance to the assembled group of writers.

"Yeah, I'm going to win this year," the pitcher said when asked about his Cy Young prediction. "That's what I told the radio guys. They didn't believe me -- [stinks] to be them."

If the BBWAA votes based on confidence this season, Kelly will be a tough guy to leave off the ballot. If they go by performance, which is something we always encourage, then Kelly's going to have an uphill climb in several directions to join the ranks of Felix Hernandez and Corey Kluber as the AL's best. Then again, the same easily could have been said about Kluber at this time last season, and he ended up making the leap from mid-rotation starter to Cy Young winner.

Kluber, by the way, is two years older than Kelly, so we obviously can't rule out a breakthrough season.

It's not an impossible scenario, but, if we're being completely honest, it's a highly unlikely scenario. With that said, If these bold claims help keep Kelly focused and motivated, that would obviously be a plus for Boston. But really, all the Red Sox are looking for is steady improvement and a reason to believe Kelly is one of the best five options available. If he achieves that in 2015, he'll have done his job.

News sport : Cowboys star Dez Bryant addresses free agency: 'It’s Cowboys forever'

Earlier this season, Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant warned the organization not to test his loyalty, but now that his free agency has finally arrived, he's making it clear where he's pledging his allegiance.

After skipping last weekend's Pro Bowl due to a groin injury, Bryant played in a charity basketball game in Arizona on Saturday — throwing down a dunk and missing another — and NBC 5 Sports reporter Pat Doney appropriately asked the First Team All-Pro wideout about his current status as a free agent.

“Regardless, I’m a Cowboy,” Bryant said. “But it is what it is. It’s business. I am a free agent. I’m very confident that something is going to happen, something is going to get done, and have these Cowboys fans excited for a long time.

“I’m a Cowboy at heart. It’s Cowboys forever.”

Of course, plenty of players have made similar statements in the past, and it doesn't always translate into a guy re-signing with the team that drafted him, but the Dallas faithful have to be pleased with his change in tone. It'll be up to Cowboys owner Jerry Jones to pony up an average annual salary in the range of Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson's $16.2 million salary, and Dallas would be crazy to let him walk.

After all, few wide receivers are capable of making a play on the ball the way he did against the Green Bay Packers before the officiating crew overturned a controversial catch that might have meant the difference between Bryant playing in Saturday's charity basketball game or the Super Bowl on Sunday.

News sport : Winning a Super Bowl MVP can make any player immortal

PHOENIX A year ago on Super Bowl Sunday, linebacker Malcolm Smith's life changed.

He ensured that for the rest of his days, his name will be extended to include "Super Bowl MVP."

Super Bowl MVP Malcolm Smith is back at the Super Bowl with his Seattle Seahawks. His interception return for a touchdown against the Denver Broncos last year sealed his MVP award. He's part of the club now.

Smith didn't seem to enjoy answering questions about the Super Bowl MVP, and that's understandable. He probably hears about it all the time.

"Nothing has really changed," Smith said. "Still coming out doing the same stuff every day."

He said he hasn't even taken the trophy out of its trunk.

"When you're playing you don't spend time looking at your trophies, you're worried about the next thing," Smith said.

But there will be a time, probably when he is done playing, that Smith will realize how much that award is a part of his football legacy, and how he'll always be remembered for it. Smith started just five games for the Seahawks this season, but everyone who follows football closely knows his name. Some other player might have his life change in Super Bowl XLIX on Sunday, if he's lucky enough.

A Super Bowl MVP doesn't really change too much for players like Bart Starr, Peyton Manning, Emmitt Smith, Jerry Rice or Tom Brady. They would be legends with or without that award. But there's a recognizable list of players who were immortalized because of their one big Super Bowl.

Doug Williams. Mark Rypien. Larry Brown. Desmond Howard (though he had that whole Heisman Trophy thing too). Dexter Jackson. Santonio Holmes. These men had varying levels of NFL success, but their professional careers will be defined by one game.

Deion Branch had a good but not great NFL career. He never had a 1,000-yard season or more than six touchdowns in a season. But he was awesome in Super Bowl XXXIX. He had 11 catches for 133 yards in a win over the Eagles. He won the MVP. And he'll be known forever because of it.

Branch was doing multiple interviews on radio row this week at the Super Bowl promoting the restaurant chain TGI Friday's and its Super Bowl specials, and he admits that he might not have that opportunity if it wasn't for that Super Bowl MVP award. That made him a household name and opened up doors. When asked if it was a life-changing thing, Branch said, "Clearly, yes." And he sees being in that club, and even being asked about it to his day, as nothing but a positive.

"It's a great thing," said Branch, who last played in 2012. "It's always great to be known. And if I'm MVP evidently we won, and that's the most important thing to myself. It's an opportunity to be a part of a special game, and do it with my guys. The MVP is a bonus, and it's a great honor. To be alongside that list of guys is a blessing."

Branch has his MVP in a glass case in the man cave in his house. He didn't seem to mind talking about it, so many years after his big day. There's nothing wrong with being known for something special like a Super Bowl MVP, even if it's a bit overwhelming to think that people will remember him decades and decades from now because he's part of that exclusive club.

"That's the part that's crazy," Branch said. "I always sit back and think, 'That is wild.'"

News sport : Tom Brady is one win from ending the greatest QB ever debate

PHOENIX – All that is on the line for Super Bowl XLIX for New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady is becoming practically an undisputed pick for greatest quarterback ever.

No big deal.

Some people will argue that Brady already holds that title, and they might be right. On Sunday he’ll become the second player in NFL history to appear in six Super Bowls, and the other is longtime backup defensive lineman Mike Lodish. No great player can match Brady’s six conference championships. Only nine players in NFL history have multiple MVPs, and he’s one of them. He's already in the top five all time in completions, yards, touchdowns and rating.

But all of that, with a fourth Super Bowl ring, and the debate should be done.

[Watch the Super Bowl live on Yahoo Sports and NBC Sports - Sunday at 6 p.m. ET]

“If he wins a fourth one, and he’s been here six times – nobody else has been here six times – those numbers speak for themselves,” Hall of Fame receiver and NFL Network analyst Michael Irvin said. “But when we start talking distance traveled, there’s not a man in sports, let alone a man in football, who has traveled a further distance than Tom Brady. He’s the greatest ever.”

I’ve often argued Peyton Manning is the greatest quarterback ever – his second act in Denver is absolutely unprecedented in NFL history – but it’s hard to argue it anymore if Brady gets his fourth title 13 years after his first one. Super Bowl rings are not the only measure of any player (if that’s the case, present to me why Brad Johnson is better than Dan Marino) but it’s obviously an important one. And Brady would be the ultimate winner at quarterback.

Joe Montana and Terry Bradshaw are the other quarterbacks with four Super Bowl wins, but their 4-0 records wouldn’t trump Brady’s potential 4-2. I don’t give extra credit for Montana or Bradshaw being undefeated. It’s not like Montana’s seven playoff losses are better because they happened before Super Bowl. Most right-minded people would agree it’s a bigger accomplishment to get to the Super Bowl and lose than lose before the Super Bowl. Just getting there is a great accomplishment. Winning four is unbelievable. But getting the fourth title – and not having his Super Bowl record drop to 3-3 after a 3-0 start – would be an enormous difference for many people in the discussion of his legacy.

Brady’s response to all the talk of his legacy this week wasn’t necessarily uncomfortable, but he clearly had no interest in shining any light on himself. The former sixth-round pick said his ranking on the list of greatest quarterbacks doesn't matter to him.

“It doesn’t. Truthfully, it has never been a motivating thing,” Brady said. “I never envisioned I’d have a chance to play in a sixth Super Bowl. I wasn’t born for this. I just tried to work hard to put myself in position, and I’ve been on a great team with a lot of great players over the years, with great coaching.

“I love playing. That’s where my motivation is.”

Brady isn’t done, either. He threw for 4,109 yards and had a 97.4 rating this season. He’s 37 but seems like he might have another crack or two at making it back to a Super Bowl. He's still one of the best players in the game, and the Patriots haven't shown any signs of slipping either.

But if Brady and the Patriots can win today, any further championships would just add to the top line of his NFL resume: greatest quarterback of all time.

News sport : Former TCU DE DeVonte' Fields commits to Louisville

DeVonte’ Fields is headed to the ACC.

Fields, the former TCU defensive end who was the AP Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year in 2012, announced on Twitter that he is committed to Louisville.

Fields played the 2014 season at Trinity Valley Community College in Austin, Texas, after getting kicked off the Horned Frogs last summer.

TCU initially suspended Fields in July after he was accused of assaulting and pointing a gun at his ex-girlfriend. As that investigation continued, the school released a statement in August saying that Fields was “separated from the university.”

Soon after the statement was released, Fields announced a transfer to FCS Stephen F. Austin on Aug. 6. However, two days later Stephen F. Austin announced that TCU declared that Fields did not “meet the requirements to attain the one-time transfer waiver,” which made Fields ineligible.

Fields then enrolled at Trinity Valley, where he registered 61 tackles and 6.5 sacks.

He’ll join a Louisville defense that was 24th in the country in scoring defense and 10th in rushing defense in 2014.

If Fields can regain his 2012 form – when he racked up 53 tackles, 18.5 tackles for loss and 10 sacks – he’ll provide a huge boost for a solid Cardinals defense.

News sport : Report: NFL investigating Falcons for piping in artificial crowd noise

Apparently New England isn’t the only team being investigated by the NFL.

According to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the league is looking into whether the Atlanta Falcons were piping in artificial crowd noise at the Georgia Dome for the past two seasons while the opposing team was huddling and attempting to call its play.

Additionally, Schefter is reporting that the Falcons and the team could face a fine and “quite possibly lose a draft choice.”

A Falcons spokesman acknowledged the investigation to Schefter.

“We were informed during the season that the league office is looking into crowd noise during our games,” the spokesman said. “We have cooperated fully with them, and we’re awaiting the outcome.”

The plan to use the artificial crowd noise “originated from the Falcons’ game operations department,” per Schefter, but with many teams around the league using silent snap counts, Schefter says it’s “difficult to discern how much of an advantage it gave the Falcons.”

The Falcons were 3-5 at home in each of the last two seasons.
