News sport : Paula Creamer makes ace in LPGA opener, does nice shoulder shimmy

Paula Creamer got married in December, and appparently the honeymoon extended into her golf game to start the 2015 LPGA season.

On Friday at the inaugural Coates Golf Championship, Creamer made a hole-in-one on the par-3 sixth. The hole, which played 162 yards in Round 2, is a replica of the par-3 16th at Augusta National Golf Club, home of the Masters. Creamer used a 5-iron to sink the shot.

The highlight doesn't end with the ball going in the hole, however. Creamer did a very nice two-step on the tee box, followed by a subtle shoulder shimmy just before she retrieved her ball from the hole.

News sport : Confused Marshawn Lynch: 'For some reason y’all continue to come back'

PHOENIX – Marshawn Lynch didn't have a one-line script.

For his last media obligation of Super Bowl week, the quiet Seattle Seahawks running back expressed confusion why the media keeps showing up to hear what he has to say. He expressed at media day on Tuesday that he was just there to avoid a fine, and Wednesday he explained that the media knew why he was there. He kept repeating the same lines until his five-minute obligation was done.

This time, at the end of a long-winded question to start off, Lynch surprised everyone by wondering aloud why the media continued to document his few words.

"Hey, look," Lynch said. "I mean, all week I’ve done told y’all what’s up. For some reason y’all continue to come back and do the same thing y’all did. I don’t know what story y’all trying to get out of me. I don’t know what image y’all trying to portray on me. But it don’t matter what y’all think, what y’all say about me, because when I go home at night, the same people I look in the face, my family that I love, that’s all that matters to me.

"So y’all can go and make up whatever y’all want to make up – because I don’t say enough for y’all to go put anything out on me – but I’ll come to y’all event, y’all shove cameras and microphones down my throat. But when I’m at home in my environment, I don’t see y’all. But y’all mad at me. If y’all ain’t mad at me, what y’all here for."

A reporter started to say he wasn't mad at Lynch (many reporters aren't upset at Lynch, and they find the spectacle as confusing as Lynch does), and Lynch started again.

"I ain’t got nothing for y’all though," Lynch said. "I told y’all that, so y’all should know that. But y’all will sit here like right now and continue to do the same thing. I’m here preparing for a game and y’all want to ask me all these questions, which is understandable, I can get down with that. But I told y’all, I’m not about to say nothing. So for the remainder of my three minutes, because I’m here, I’m available for y’all – I’m here, I’m available for y’all, I’ve done talked, all my requirements are fulfilled – so now for this next three minutes, I’ll just be looking y’all the way y’all looking at me. Thank you."

Lynch didn't have an angry tone, he just seemed genuinely confused over the interest in him after he has made it clear many times he didn't want to talk. Lynch did somewhat answer a couple questions. On one that asked about his work in the inner cities:

"When I’m in the inner cities, come to them inner cities and come holler at me then," Lynch said.

Then came another question he didn't answer.

"Y'all got two more minutes to look at me," Lynch said with a laugh.

There were more idle chatter from reporters, maybe a question or two.

"Shout out to Oakland, California," Lynch said. "Shout out Westbrook. Shout out to my teammates."

Oklahoma City Thunder guard Russell Westbrook has been using Lynch's one-line approach to media interviews, and perhaps that's what Lynch was referring to.

"Shout out to my real Africans out there," Lynch said. "Y'all got another minute to look at me though."

A Spanish reporter asked him to say something in Spanish.

"Hola," Lynch said.

Lynch was wearing his "Beast Mode" brand hat, and he said where that can be purchased online when asked. Then he started his shout outs again.

"Shout out to my teammates," Lynch said again. "Shout out Family First."

Lynch was asked which of his teammates was the best.

"All of 'em," Lynch said. "I got 20 seconds. I'm going to sit here with my mouth closed and look at you."

And there was silence.

"Thank you," Lynch said, and walked off.

And Lynch was done with his media requirements for the week. At least until after the game.

News sport : Chase Elliott to take over for Jeff Gordon in No. 24 car in 2016

Unsurprisingly, Chase Elliott is Jeff Gordon's replacement in Hendrick Motorsports' No. 24 car.

The team made the news official on Thursday, and said the 2014 Xfinity Series champion would drive the car in 2016 after Jeff Gordon steps aside following the 2015 season.

“Chase brings the kind of intangibles that make him the total package as a driver,” team owner Rick Hendrick said in a statement. “Not only is he a special talent inside the race car, but there’s a natural combination of competitiveness, work ethic and smarts that you rarely see. Chase’s personality and demeanor make him popular with fans, teammates and sponsors. He’s a great fit for our organization on many levels, and we feel he and Alan will be a successful combination. There’s a lot to be excited about.”

Gordon announced last week that 2015 would be his final full-time season as a driver. Elliott, 19, was the likely choice to be his replacement. In his first season in the then-Nationwide Series, Elliott won three races and clinched the championship in the next-to-last race of the season at Phoenix.

Elliott, the son of former NASCAR champion Bill Elliott, signed a developmental contract with Hendrick in 2011. He won his first NASCAR race in 2013, when he beat Ty Dillon at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park in the Truck Series. He and Dillon made contact on the last corner of the race.

He had 26 top-10 finishes driving for JR Motorsports in the No. 9 car in 2014 in NASCAR's No. 2 series. In addition to defending his Xfinity Series title, he'll drive five races in a fifth Hendrick car in 2015. Elliott will drive the No. 25 NAPA car at Martinsville, Richmond, Charlotte, Indianapolis and Darlington.

“So many people have been behind me, and the first thing I want to do is thank them,” Elliott said. “My parents especially have believed in me every step of the way, and I know this wouldn’t be possible without all the sacrifices they’ve made to focus on my racing career. This is such a big week for our family.

“I’m also extremely grateful to Mr. Hendrick and my teammates at both Hendrick Motorsports and JR Motorsports for believing in me. NAPA has been a huge supporter, and I’m honored to represent them on and off the track. Of course the fans have been amazing to me, and I’m so appreciative of that. I know how rare this opportunity is and will work as hard as I can to make everyone proud.”

No sponsorship was announced for Elliott's 2016 campaign. Gordon's 2015 sponsors include the AARP's Drive to End Hunger, 3M and Axalta, which bought Gordon's longtime sponsor DuPont.

News sport : Could Richard Sherman miss the Super Bowl for his son's birth?

So this is a new wrinkle for the Super Bowl: Richard Sherman might, just might, miss it because of the impending birth of his son.

Sherman has decreed it unlikely he'll miss the game, but his girlfriend Ashley Moss is expected to deliver their first child, a son, in the next week. As a precautionary measure, she's in Arizona, and if she were to go into labor, she'd deliver the boy at a local hospital.

[Watch the Super Bowl live on Yahoo Sports and NBC Sports - Sunday at 6 p.m. ET]

As for whether the boy would show up on Super Bowl Sunday, Sherman had this to say on Thursday: "He's not supposed to come Sunday. I think he's going to be a disciplined young man."

Earlier, Sherman had noted that impending fatherhood had changed his perspective on this particular game, and allowed that it could give him extra motivation on Sunday.

"It's someone that actually depends on you for everyday living," he said during Media Day. "Everything they do is dependent on you and how you provide and how successful you are. As a parent, you want to set a great example for them, so I guess, to a degree, a lot of things are riding on [the Super Bowl]."

Someone's been pulling the fire alarm at the Patriots' hotel all week. Could someone else try to slip some labor-inducing hot sauce into Ms. Moss's breakfast on Sunday? You never know.

News sport : Cubs win: Kris Bryant named baseball's top prospect by ESPN

(USA Today)

Things continue to look up for the once sad-sack Chicago Cubs. After a successful offseason revamping in which they acquired big names like Jon Lester and Miguel Montero, the club and its fans have something else to look forward to – the No. 1 prospect, and top farm system, in all of baseball.

That’s according to ESPN baseball analyst Keith Law, who on Thursday revealed his annual ranking of the top prospects in baseball (content is behind a paywall). Atop that list is 23-year-old Kris Bryant, a Cubs third baseman who led all of professional baseball in home runs last year with 43. Bryant is obviously major-league ready after slashing .325/.438/.661 between Double-and-Triple-A last year, but general manager Jed Hoyer hinted last week that Bryant may not be on the opening day roster. Bryant was ranked No. 15 in the 2014 edition of the rankings but his great season moved him to the top of list. He will no doubt be in a Cubs uniform at some point in 2015.

There’s even more good news for the Cubs. Closely behind Bryant in the Top 100 rankings is shortstop prospect Addison Russell, who checked in at No. 4. The 21-year-old was the key piece in the July trade that sent Cubs ace Jeff Samardzija to the Oakland Athletics. After reaching Triple-A for three games in 2013, Russell spent almost all of 2014 in Double-A with the Athletics and Cubs organizations.

Also in the top 15 for the Cubs is Cuban right fielder Jorge Soler, who was a late August callup for the Cubs. He batted .292/.330/.573 in 97 plate appearances down the stretch and should be the everyday right fielder for the Cubs in 2015.

Add those pieces to up-and-coming stars already in the majors like Anthony Rizzo and Javier Baez and it all makes the Cubs the envy of baseball, according to Law.

“The hype around their system is justified by the talent in it, with the strongest collection of top-shelf hitting prospects I can remember since I started working in baseball. They have someone coming at just about every position other than catcher and first base, and most of them fare well both in traditional evaluation and in analysis of their performance to date.”

Followed closely behind the Cubs in the rankings are two more perennial last place teams – the Minnesota Twins and Houston Astros. The Twins have the No. 2-ranked farm system and No. 2 prospect in Byron Buxton. Buxton was No. 1 in 2014 but slipped after getting only 181 at-bats last year due to injury. Astros shortstop Carlos Correa is No. 3 in the 2015 rankings as is their farm system, though Law notes it has been depleted after the big Evan Gattis trade with the Atlanta Braves.

No love lost in EPL title showdown

Jose Mourinho and Manuel Pellegrini’s rivalry is set for another chapter in their top-of-the-table Premier League clash.

|||

London - It is hard to imagine two more different characters than Jose Mourinho and Manuel Pellegrini, so it is no surprise that the Chelsea manager and his Manchester City counterpart seem to rub each other up the wrong way.

Their simmering rivalry is set for another chapter in Saturday's top-of-the-table Premier League clash at Stamford Bridge, with a potentially pivotal three points on offer.

Should Chelsea claim the spoils, they will lead the champions by eight points, while a City success would leave them just two points adrift with 15 games to play.

The bragging rights, however, also count double in battles between two coaches whose spiky relationship stretches back to their stints in charge of Real Madrid.

Pellegrini had only one season as coach at the Bernabeu, where, having failed to come out on top in the habitual two-horse race with Barcelona, he was replaced by Mourinho.

The Chilean joined Malaga and Mourinho taunted him on the way out.

“If Madrid were to fire me, I wouldn't go to Malaga. I'd go to a top-level team in Italy or England,” he said.

The normally unshakeable demeanour of Pellegrini, one of football's most sombre coaches, is clearly ruffled by the in-your-face ebullience of the self-styled “Special One”.

The corresponding fixture at Stamford Bridge last season ended with Fernando Torres scoring a late winner, Mourinho diving into the crowd and Pellegrini refusing to carry out the usual post-match etiquette.

“I didn't want to shake his hand,” he said tersely when asked whether he had gone to Mourinho at the final whistle.

While that battle went Mourinho's way, the war was won by Pellegrini, who claimed the Premier League title and League Cup as the Portuguese ended the campaign empty-handed.

Saturday's game, however, could be decided by which players are absent as much as who is on the pitch.

After a gruelling League Cup semi-final against Liverpool, Chelsea are likely to be without injured midfielder Cesc Fabregas and defender Filipe Luis, while league top scorer Diego Costa faces suspension after being charged by the FA for stamping on an opponent.

City, who have not won in the league since Jan. 1, will have to discover how to beat teams without midfielder Yaya Toure whose involvement in the African Nations Cup has hit them hard and he will again be missing on Saturday.

Among the weekend's other fixtures, Manchester United take on Leicester City and Liverpool play West Ham United on Saturday. Arsenal host Aston Villa on Sunday.

News sport : Eastern Washington QB says he has offer to transfer to Oregon

Eastern Washington quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. throws a pass against Washington Huskies. (AP Photo/Elaine Thompson, File) Oregon’s replacement for Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Marcus Mariota may come from the FCS level.

According to the Spokane Spokesman-Review, Vernon Adams Jr., a record-setting quarterback at Eastern Washington, has been offered a scholarship by Oregon and will visit the school this upcoming weekend.

Adams, who finished his redshirt junior season in 2014, has not committed to leaving Eastern Washington, but the offer from the Ducks is understandably enticing.

“I’m not saying I’m leaving Eastern, but I’m just going to check it out and see what they have to say,” Adams said.

Adams, who has thrown for 10,438 yards, 110 touchdowns and 31 interceptions in three years, said he will fly to Eugene on Friday and return to EWU on Sunday. He told the Spokesman-Review that he first spoke with Oregon coaches, including head coach Mark Helfrich, late last week.

He fits the Oregon mold of a mobile quarterback. In addition to his gaudy passing stats, he also has 1,232 rushing yards and 11 scores in his career.

If he were to transfer to Oregon, he’d have just one season of eligibility remaining and could play immediately after graduating in the spring. He’d enter a quarterback competition full of inexperience. The Ducks return last season’s backup Jeff Lockie, along with Morgan Mahalak, Ty Griffin and Taylor Alie. Additionally, Rivals.com four-star recruit Travis Waller, the 49th-best prospect in the country, is expected to sign with the Ducks on National Signing Day.

Of course, there’s no guarantee the 6-foot, 190-pound Adams would win the starting role.

“I’m not going there to be a walk-on or a second-stringer,” he said. “But if I do go down there, I’m going to work my butt off.”

Eastern Washington has gone 35-8 with Adams as a starter (including a win over Oregon State and a narrow loss to Washington), so the draw of chasing an FCS title could also draw him back to the Cheney, Wash., campus.

“Just the family I’ve made here and the people. I love it in Cheney,” Adams said.

Even if he doesn’t transfer, he’ll play in Autzen Stadium in 2015. Oregon opens its season against the Eagles in Eugene on Sept. 5.

No contract renewal for Senegal coach

Alain Giresse will not have his contract renewed as Senegal coach in the wake of a group stage exit at Afcon.

|||

Dakar - Alain Giresse will not have his contract renewed as Senegal coach in the wake of a group stage exit at the Africa Cup of Nations, the country's football federation said.

“We will continue to work without Alain Giresse; his contract will not be renewed,” Augustin Senghor, president of the Senegalese Football Association, said.

The former France international Giresse was in charge of the 2002 World Cup quarter-finalists since 2012. His contract was to expire on February 8.

Senegal failed to qualify for the 2013 Afcon and the 2014 World Cup, and their group stage exit Tuesday in Equatorial Guinea made them miss the quarter-final target set by the domestic federation.

Giresse hinted after the 2-0 defeat against Algeria Tuesday that he was set to leave his post, and preferred to fly directly to France instead of returning with the delegation to Dakar.

I prefer not to go to Senegal, because I know the situation must be very tense there; I will do it later,” he said.

Guinea pick Afcon quarter-final spot

Guinea won the drawing of lots for a spot in the African Cup of Nations quarter-finals.

|||

Malabo - Guinea won the drawing of lots for a spot in the African Cup of Nations quarter-finals on Thursday by choosing a green ball with the No. 2 printed on a piece of paper on the inside.

Amara Diabo, an official with Guinea's sports ministry, picked the winning ball out of a bowl at the start of an organising committee meeting at a hotel in Malabo. That meant Guinea finished second in Group D and eliminated Mali. Guinea will next face Ghana

on Sunday in the quarterfinals.

The two teams were forced to draw lots after finishing all three of their group matches 1-1. The Ivory Coast won the group by beating Cameroon 1-0 on Wednesday and will next face Algeria.

Before Diabo showed the officials in the room which number he'd drawn, he let a big smile run across his face. A short time later, Diabo was in the lobby of the hotel jumping for joy while talking on the phone.

The draw took place with Diabo and a representative from the Malian federation seated at the head of a U-shaped table, separated by African football confederation president Issa Hayatou and general secretary Hicham El Amrani.

“We have no other choice,” Hayatou said before the balls were placed in the bowl.

The two representatives reached their hands into the bowl at the same time and picked a ball. Diabo was the first to open his.

They each reached a hand into the bowl at the same time and picked a ball. Diabo was the first to open his.

Drawing of lots is rare, but not unprecedented. But many believe there must be a better way to judge which team remains in the tournament and which is sent home with the exact same record.

“We don't have the power to change anything,” Mali team spokesman Modibo Traore said. “CAF have to change... but it is not a first for CAF. It's a first for our association.”

Guinea is one of the three worst affected countries by the Ebola outbreak. Many in the team have said that just qualifying for the tournament was a victory.

“The whole of Africa has come together to fight the Ebola epidemic, including our brothers in Mali,” Guinea sports minister Domani Dore said. “Today is a very important day for our country. It shows when you work hard, and work together, good things can happen.”

Russia to cut budget for 2018 World Cup

The Russian government will cut the budget for hosting the 2018 World Cup as part of plans to slash state expenditure.

|||

Moscow - Russia's Sports Minister says the government will cut the budget for hosting the 2018 World Cup as part of plans to slash state expenditure while recession looms.

The Russian government is cutting its spending by 10 percent across the board after the central bank predicted last month that the economy could contract by up to 4.7 percent this year.

Mutko, who is a FIFA executive committee member, said in comments reported by the Tass news agency that World Cup stadiums and associated infrastructure would be exempt from the cuts, but “various organisational issues” and “subsidies to the organising committee” would be cut. He did not provide specific figures.

This month, FIFA President Sepp Blatter said he had been assured by Russian President Vladimir Putin that economic problems would not affect the tournament.

News sport : Splash Brothers Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson are haircuts now

All-Star starting nods, universal praise for record-setting quarters, repeated acknowledgement as the sweet-shooting sparks behind the best team in the NBA ... these are all fine enough indicators of the degree to which Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson have become household names and ascendant NBA stars. The truest signpost of the Splash Brothers' rise, though? They're inspiring fans to shave their likenesses into the backs of their heads now:

[Follow Dunks Don't Lie on Tumblr: The best slams from all of basketball]

Congratulations, Steph and Klay, on joining the likes of Michael Jordan, James Harden and Matt Bonner as confirmed NBA royalty worthy of follicular fandom. That's how you know you've arrived. (Well, that and when people start getting you tattooed on their bodies, like MJ, Harden ... and, yes, Bonner.)

If you're in the Concord, Calif., area, have been feeling a little shaggy lately and find yourself in the market for a cut that's a bit more adventurous than your standard "little off the top and sides" or "fade with the No. 2 guard," by all means, please hunt down shearsman Anthony Reyes and/or head over to Empire Barber Lounge. Know this, though — just getting a Splash Brothers cut no longer marks you as a true Roaracle-dwelling die-hard. From here on out, we're going to need to see you in a fresh Ognjen Kuzmic cut &madsh; at minimum — to believe your Bay Area bona fides. It's a high bar, I'll grant you, but an organization-and-fanbase-wide need to step your game up is the price of league-leading success.

Hat-tip to Diamond Leung of the Bay Area News Group.

News sport : Watch Wisconsin RB Dare Ogunbowale's awesome trick kick (Video)

Based on this video posted by Dare Ogunbowale, it appears that Wisconsin would still be in good hands if kicker Rafael Gaglianone ever went down with an injury.

Ogunbowale, a redshirt sophomore who moved from defensive back to running back during the 2014 season, showed off his impressive kicking skills in an Instagram post earlier in the week.

Watch this:

I don’t know if I’ve ever really seen anything like that. He flips the ball up with his right foot and then generates a spin with his left foot. He then takes a few steps back and drills what looks to be a 25-yard field goal with plenty of room to spare.

The 5-foot-11, 188-pound Ogunbowale played in all 14 games for the Badgers in 2014, registering 10 total tackles while also running for 193 yards and a touchdown on 34 carries.

It wouldn’t be a surprise to see him on the kicking depth chart next season.
