News sport : Two Oklahoma State players combine for an ugly alley-oop try

Oklahoma State's Jeff Newberry is a high-flying 6-foot-2 point guard who was among the nation's most coveted junior college prospects last year.

Somehow teammate LeBryan Nash made Newberry look as clumsy as me trying to finish an alley-oop with a pass that was well off target.

Nash's alley-oop pass was too low and led Newberry too far under the basket during the second half of Oklahoma State's 64-53 victory over No. 20 Baylor on Tuesday night. As a result, Newberry got stuffed by the underside of the rim as he tried to finish the play.

Newberry enjoyed an otherwise decent game against Baylor, posting 10 points, four rebounds and two steals off the bench. He also had a nice two-handed baseline slam when he beat his man off the dribble earlier in the second half.

The botched alley-oop is probably the play that will get the most attention though. Marcus Smart to Markel Brown, it was not.

News sport : Michigan students take the Jim Harbaugh Breakfast Challenge (Video)

New Michigan assistant coach Jay Harbaugh dropped a bombshell last week when he revealed that his father, Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh, once ate cereal using Gatorade instead of milk.

Fortunately for Jim Harbaugh, the Michigan students and Alumni Association have his back and have assembled the “Harbaugh Breakfast Challenge.”

As you can see, the results were mixed. The Fruit Punch Gatorade and Apple Jacks combo seemed to be a hit here, but the rest – especially anything involving Frosted Flakes or Wheaties – received less than stellar reviews from the students.

Hopefully Harbaugh can provide a little clarity as to what combination of Gatorade and cereal creates the most well-rounded and delicious breakfast.

We’re waiting on you, Jim.

Cristiano Ronaldo handed two-match ban

Cristiano Ronaldo was handed a two-match ban after kicking out at an opponent during a clash with Cordoba.

|||

Spain - Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo has been given a two-match ban following his dismissal for kicking out at an opponent during their La Liga clash with Cordoba last Saturday, the Spanish league said on Wednesday.

Ronaldo was unable to make an impact in the match and his frustration saw him first lash out with his hand at Jose Crespo, which the referee missed, and then minutes later kick out at Edimar for which he was sent off.

Real won 2-1 thanks to a late Gareth Bale penalty and Ronaldo apologised on Twitter after the game.

The Portugal winger has been suspended for Real's next two La Liga matches against Real Sociedad and Sevilla but will be available for the derby with Atletico Madrid.

Giresse set for Senegal exit

Senegal coach Alain Giresse has reached the end of his contract and may become the first managerial casualty of Afcon.

|||

Malabo - Senegal coach Alain Giresse has reached the end of his contract and is expected to become the first managerial casualty of the African Nations Cup after his side were eliminated on Tuesday, the Senegalese news agency APS reported.

“The road has ended, my contract is at an end,” the Frenchman told reporters after a 2-0 loss to Algeria in Malabo ensured Senegal missed out on a quarter-final berth.

Giresse told reporters he had agreed to a two-year contract from January 2013 when they pressed him on his future with Senegal.

“There will be a lot of changes around the national team. What will be next? I do not know,” he added.

The 62-year-old was roundly criticised over his tactics by Senegalese football personalities in their post-tournament exit analysis on Wednesday.

The diminutive former French international was competing at his third Nations Cup, having taken Mali to the third place at the 2012 finals and Gabon to the group stages two years earlier.

News sport : How far does TCU coach Gary Patterson walk during games?

Ever wondered how much distance TCU coach Gary Patterson covers during a game? We now have a good idea.

Ashley Stamp, a student manager for TCU in 2014, posted the following distances from her pedometer on Tuesday. Stamp was one of the managers assigned to Patterson on game days, so she went wherever he went. Behold the results:

If you're familiar with TCU's schedule, you'll immediately notice a correlation between the closeness and/or significance of the game with the distance that was covered. The three most-traveled games were against Baylor (TCU's only loss of the season), at West Virginia (a nailbiting win) and the Peach Bowl against Ole Miss. The two most stationary games were TCU's 82-27 win over Texas Tech and the Horned Frogs' 55-3 win over Iowa State.

Now we need to start tracking the pounds rowed by the man in charge of taming Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables.

FA slap fine on Mourinho

Jose Mourinho has been fined after claiming there was a “campaign” to influence referees' decisions against Chelsea.

|||

London - Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has been fined 25 000 pounds by the FA after claiming there was a “campaign” to influence referees' decisions against his team.

Mourinho, 52, was in trouble for his comments after his side were denied a penalty in a 1-1 draw at Southampton in the Premier League on Dec. 28.

The Portuguese contested the charge but the FA's Independent Regulatory Commission ruled the comments were “improper and brought the game into disrepute” although it said they did not “imply bias on the part of a referee or referees”.

Mourinho denied his comments constituted improper conduct but the commission thought otherwise and found him guilty of breaching FA Rule E3.

News sport : Media Tour Day 2: Danica Patrick has a year left on her contract

Danica Patrick's contract with Stewart-Haas Racing goes for just one more season. Is Stewart-Haas looking to move on at the end of 2015?

SHR co-owner Gene Haas said the team wants her back and Patrick said Tuesday she doesn't want to drive for anyone else.

"Absolutely, we would love to see Danica come back," Haas said via USA Today. "We want to see Danica succeed as much as anybody does. I think NASCAR wants to see her succeed. So there's an awful lot of vested interest to have Danica succeed in this man's sport.

"We're very fortunate to have someone like Danica here."

Even if Patrick struggles compared to the other three teams at Stewart-Haas, she's still a marketing dream. Because of her popularity, financing the No. 10 car isn't an issue. If Patrick didn't have the ability to attract and keep sponsorship, the decision to keep her after the season barring a Chase berth would be a much different one. We're going to be surprised if Patrick ends up anywhere else but Stewart-Haas in 2016.

• Speaking of Patrick, GoDaddy pulled an ad involving Patrick that was set to air during the Super Bowl. After its debut, the ad got a lot of negative reaction and even incited a Change.org petition that garnered over 40,000 signatures. Hey y'all, we have better things to petition than Super Bowl ads and did we really expect a deep and nuanced ad from GoDaddy? Let's re-evaluate our priorities here.

Remember the RTA? It's the collaboration of most every Sprint Cup Series team in the garage. The goal of the arrangement is for teams to work together for the goal of increased efficiency and value. Michael Waltrip Racing co-owner Rob Kauffman is in charge of it and had an interesting comparison when asked about the RTA on Tuesday.

“I look at it more as talking about the plumbing in a house,” Kauffman said via NBC Sports. “It’s really the background. There’s not really much to talk about.

“I think the way I would say it is there’s a very active and constructive dialogue between the NASCAR folks and all the teams, through the RTA, really focusing on long-term issues that affect the sport. Healthy teams are in the interest of everybody, and that’s what we’re working on.”

Hopefully the RTA doesn't have any clogs. And if it does, who would play the role of plumber?

• We can't close the second day of the media tour without a trained assassin update. During a hearing regarding a request for protection order by his ex-girlfriend Patricia Driscoll, Busch said he believed that she was a trained assassin.

“My right hand was on the Bible, and I swore under oath to tell the truth,” Busch said via the Sporting News.

A decision from the hearing is still forthcoming.

Luis Figo for Fifa president?

Luis Figo announced his intention to run against incumbent Fifa President Sepp Blatter in an interview.

|||

Former Portugal international Luis Figo said on Wednesday he wanted to stand for the FIFA presidency revealing his plans one day before nominations close to enter the race.

The former Real Madrid and Barcelona forward announced his intention to run against incumbent Sepp Blatter in an interview with CNN and said he had the five nominations needed for an official campaign.

Figo, 42, was twice voted World Player of the Year and played for Portugal 127 times.

"I care about football, so what I'm seeing regarding the image of FIFA - not only now but in the past years - I don't like it," he said.

Figo is the latest to throw his hat in the ring alongside Blatter, Prince Ali Bin Al-Hussein of Jordan, former FIFA official Jerome Champagne of France, ex-France international David Ginola, Michael Van Praag, president of the Dutch FA and Mino Raiola, an Italian-Dutch football agent.

Speaking about his campaign, Figo said: "Football has given me so much during my life and I want to give something back to the game. I look at the reputation of FIFA right now and I don't like it. Football deserves better.

"In recent weeks, months, and even years, I have seen the image of FIFA deteriorate and as I speak to many people in football - to players, managers and Association Presidents - so many of those people have told me that something has to be done.

"Throughout my career I have worked at all levels of the game. This has given me a unique insight and understanding that I feel can enhance the discussion about the future of FIFA and the future of football."

In his 20-year playing career Figo made nearly 800 appearances for Sporting Lisbon, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Inter Milan and played a record 127 times for Portugal scoring 32 goals.

Figo, who has served on the UEFA Football Committee since 2011, added: "I am convinced that FIFA's position as the governing body of world football is absolutely vital.

"For this to be preserved it is essential that we see change at the top and we set FIFA on a new course which is all about football and less about politics.

"This is why I am looking forward to getting on the road in the coming weeks, to explain in detail my programme and my vision."

News sport : EKU player allegedly involved in bar fight with Kentucky players

An Eastern Kentucky player was allegedly involved in a bar fight with three Kentucky players in Richmond, Ky.

According to the Louisville Courier-Journal, two witnesses allege that EKU lineman Colton Scurry was the aggressor in the altercation that also involved Kentucky's Dorian Baker, Drew Barker and Tymere Dubose.

Scurry's father said his son has multiple facial fractures from the incident, which is being investigated by Eastern Kentucky police as an off-campus assault.

From the Courier-Journal:

"We were in the back part of Jerzees," said Will Ruholt, a friend of Barker's from Conner High School. "A couple people started talking (abusively) and things started to get a little heated. Colton Scurry is the one who started the entire fight. He pushed me. Multiple people can verify that."

Zach Littleton, an EKU sophomore who said he accompanied the UK players, also described Scurry as the instigator.

"I was actually pretty sober and I was watching everything that was going down," Littleton said. "Basically what happened was a bunch of UK football players come in and all you hear is, 'This is my neighborhood. What are you doing here?'

"I know if there's any video, you'll see I'm trying to defuse the situation. I was getting between them and saying, 'Calm down. Calm down.' (But) As soon as (Scurry) pushed Will, it was just a big mess. From what I saw, it wasn't just Colton. I saw a bunch of people swinging for no reason."

Scurry's father said he's "healing" and they're trying to let the legal process take its course.

You may recognize the names of Baker, Barker and Dubose from an off-field incident in 2014. They were three of the four Kentucky players charged with firing pellet guns on campus in October. Following that incident, they were suspended for the Wildcats' win over South Carolina. A Kentucky spokesperson offered no comment on the fight allegations.

Costa accused of stamping in cup clash

Chelsea’s Diego Costa could have earned him a red card after two stamping incidents in the League Cup clash with Liverpool.

|||

London - Chelsea's Diego Costa has quickly become a fan favourite at Stamford Bridge but his fiery temper could have earned him a red card after two stamping incidents in their League Cup semi-final with Liverpool on Tuesday.

The Spain striker appeared to tread down on Emre Can and Martin Skrtel in the second leg clash at Stamford Bridge, that Chelsea won 1-0 to book a place in the Wembley final.

The west London club will be waiting anxiously to see if the Football Association choose to take retrospective action.

Any suspension could rule Costa out of Chelsea's crucial top-of-the-table Premier League clash at home to second-placed Manchester City, who they lead by five points, on Saturday.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers had little doubt the Brazilian-born striker should have been sent off.

“There's no need to do it. He's a top class player. He knows how to do it so the officials don't see. It wasn't good for the game. It's disappointing to see such a good player behave like that,” Rodgers told reporters.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho saw things differently.

The Portuguese, no stranger to conspiracy theories, sought to explain away the incidents as nothing more than accidents blown out of proportion by TV pundits.

“I don't know what you understand by stamp. I think you are already influenced by - there is a campaign by a certain pundit that talks about Diego Costa's crimes,” he told reporters after former Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp analysed the match.

“What (broadcaster) Sky calls crime, it's absolutely accidental.

“When you are there and you are paid and you are very well paid - these guys they have a very good seat, they are always right and they always win but they should be honest.”

Costa has taken to English football like a duck to water, with his combative approach suiting the high-tempo physicality of the Premier League.

The striker has scored 17 league goals since arriving from Atletico Madrid in the close season.

He was a handful for Liverpool's defenders all evening and was unfortunate not to win a penalty in the first half when he was felled by a clumsy tackle from Slovakia defender Skrtel.

Chelsea's winner arrived four minutes into extra time when Branislav Ivanovic rose unmarked to power home a header from close range to send them to the March 1 final.

The defender was singled out for praise by Mourinho, with a “bloody boot” evidence of the Serb's commitment to the cause.

“I think Ivanovic's boot should go direct to the academy for the kids to see all the blood,” Mourinho said.

“The boot is a white boot but it's completely red. He had a big cut - he gave absolutely everything.”

Tovey preaches patience with Bafana

Former Bafana captain Neil Tovey says the public needs to be patient with the team as they are a work in progress.

|||

Johannesburg - Former Bafana Bafana captain Neil Tovey says the public needs to be patient with the national soccer team as they are still a work in progress.

“This team has been together for a few months and I think we need to give the team a chance to build,” Tovey told Sapa on Wednesday.

“I don't think we should be quick to judge them. We need to give them more time to play together and to gain experience.”

Bafana were outplayed 2-1 by Ghana 2-1 on Tuesday, in their third and final group match at the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) in Equatorial Guinea, and subsequently knocked out of the tournament.

They failed to live up to expectations in a tough group C, mustering a draw against Senegal and a receiving a hiding from Algeria.

Tovey believed the opening 3-1 loss to Algeria had been hugely demoralising.

“That was a tough one to swallow because it was in our hands. We scored first and could have made it two goals. It killed us, we should have won.”

Despite their elimination from Afcon, Bafana had an above average record under coach Shakes Mashaba with six wins, five draws and two losses since he took over in August last year.

The former central defender urged fellow South Africans to support the team as they looked to build for the future.

“Remember the plan was to look to the future and this was the first test in a long journey for the team,” Tovey said.

“I am sure they will bounce back and do well in the future once they have played many games together.”

Tovey, who led Bafana to Afcon glory in 1996, believed the current team's Achilles heel was when they did not have the ball.

“The defence definitely needs to be looked at. I think the whole shape of the team defensively was not at its best.

“In future, they will have to improve their communication and formation against strong opposition.”

The Kaizer Chiefs legend said Mashaba's young troops had gained invaluable experience from the tournament in West Africa.

“They still have a long way to go. They will learn from this tournament and become better players.

“The team has a bunch of youngsters which gives us all hope that they can still improve.”

'Happy' Bale rules out Man United move

Real Madrid winger Gareth Bale says he is happy at the Bernabeu and has no intention of moving to Man United.

|||

Barcelona - Real Madrid winger Gareth Bale says he is happy at the Bernabeu and has no intention of moving to Manchester United.

Despite playing a significant role in Real winning their celebrated 10th European Cup and the King's Cup last season there has been talk of a move back to the Premier League for the Welshman.

He has been criticised by a section of the Real fans and the media for being greedy on the ball and failing to link up with his team mates.

It has led to rumours that he could be part of a deal where United goalkeeper David de Gea would move to Real.

“I can't see myself at Manchester United,” Bale told Spanish radio. “In an interview recently I was asked if I was happy in Madrid and I said that I was very happy here.

“I have a long contract still to go, I am enjoying myself and we are winning trophies. I want to continue doing this at Real Madrid.”

Bale was singled out after Real's defeat against Valencia in their first game back following the Christmas break for not passing to Karim Benzema who was well positioned to score, and he also whistled at the Bernabeu when Real played Espanyol.

“(Against Valencia) I only remember running towards the goal, I wanted to score but it didn't go in,” said Bale.

“If I had scored against Valencia and Espanyol then nobody would have said anything. I didn't see the pass and I don't think it was so easy but these things happen in football. They are part of the play.

“I feel the support of the Bernabeu. I am going to continue working to show what I am capable of doing on the pitch and so as to win more trophies.”

Bale claimed he had a good relationship with Cristiano Ronaldo and that the criticism he had received would not affect his style of play.

“There is no rivalry between us. We have meetings to talk about tactics. Normally if there is a free-kick from the left then Cristiano takes it and on the right it would be me. We get on well,” said Bale.

“I don't think I'm greedy. On the pitch I make assists and score goals. I play the game how I like to play and the press can say what they want.”

English clubs dominate transfer deals

English clubs are spending more money in the international transfer market than any other country, according to Fifa.

|||

London - English clubs are spending more money in the international transfer market than any other country in the world according to a Fifa report published on Wednesday.

The findings of the 2015 Fifa/TMS Global Transfer Market Systems Report, covering the last 12 months, shows English clubs spent more than $770 million (R8 087 835 000) on foreign players - about $308 million (67 percent) more than their nearest rivals Spain.

In total, clubs around the world spent $4.06 billion signing players from outside their own borders. The report does not include domestic transfers.

Brazil is the most active country in terms of international transfers with 1 335 deals - incoming and outgoing - followed by England with 1 263 and Portugal with 823.

One area highlighted in the report for the first time concerns the transfers of young players under the age of 18.

Spanish clubs sign more overseas youngsters under 18 - a fact highlighted last week when Real Madrid unveiled 16-year-old Norwegian “wonderkid” Martin Odegaard who they bought from Stromsgodset earlier this month.

Real's arch rivals Barcelona have been hit by a Fifa transfer ban for breaching the strict rules regarding the signing of young players, while Real Madrid are also being investigated by Fifa for alleged similar offences.

The report states: “In 2014, Spain was the country that engaged the highest number of minors. 400 minor applications were submitted, and 352 were accepted. This is a much higher number than any other association worldwide.”

Mark Goddard, general manager of Fifa/TMS, told a conference call: “It is important to note that the more minor applications the better. We are happy to see they are putting in so many applications - that's what they should be doing.

“We can then examine them and the ones that do not break any rules are approved.”

The Fifa/TMS partnership was established in 2007 with the transfer matching system (TMS) set up to facilitate and monitor international transfers.
