News sport : Hall of Famer Charlie Sifford recovering after stroke

Charlie Sifford, who was the first black man to earn a PGA Tour card, is recovering after suffering a stroke, according to Golf Channel.

The 92-year-old, who is also battling a bacterial infection, is reportedly in stable condition at South Pointe Hospital in Cleveland.

Sifford broke pro golf's color barrier after the PGA of America desegregated in 1961, winning twice in his PGA Tour career, including the 1967 Greater Hartford Open and 1969 Los Angeles Open. He won two senior titles.

In 2001, Sifford became the first black golfer inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame. Last November, he became just the third golfer, behind Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer, to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor.

‘Africa solidly behind Blatter’

African countries will vote overwhelmingly for Sepp Blatter in this year's Fifa elections, senior officials say.

|||

Equatorial Guinea - African countries will vote overwhelmingly for Sepp Blatter in this year's Fifa elections, senior officials told Reuters on Tuesday.

“Africa is solidly behind Blatter. You will find he is very popular on the continent,” said Kwesi Nyantakyi, the president of the Ghana Football Association and a Confederation of African Football executive committee member.

Blatter faces four challengers in his bid for re-election on May 29, when he seeks a fifth term as president that will take him past his 80th birthday.

Dutch football association (KNVB) President Michael van Praag announced on Tuesday his intention to run following similar moves by former Fifa deputy secretary general Jerome Champagne and Prince Ali Bin Al-Hussein of Jordan.

Former France international David Ginola is also standing in what is widely regarded as being a publicity stunt.

But Blatter's prospective opponents are likely to get little support from the 53 African voters.

“The continent is united behind him,” added former South African Football Association president Molefi Oliphant, who still serves on the CAF executive.

“We made a formal endorsement of his candidacy last year at our meeting in Rio de Janeiro already.”

Previous endorsements from CAF, however, have not necessarily translated into votes.

African football's controlling body promised Lennart Johansson a block of votes in 1998 but member associations took no heed and helped Blatter to victory. In 2002 CAF president Issa Hayatou failed to muster significant support from his own continent and lost heavily by 139-56 votes at the Fifa Congress in Seoul.

Affection for Blatter stems from the generous financial assistance he has given Africa during his 17-year tenure.

“He has done a lot for the continent. It is he who has set up the financial assistance programmes and who through the Goal project has built infra structure in all of the countries,” added Nyantakyi.

“The Europeans don't understand that. They say it is not his own money but Fifa's but that's not the point. He is the one who set up all the assistance programmes that have helped boost African football.”

Goal is Blatter's pet project, inaugurated not long after he came to power in 1998 that has built training centres, accommodation, pitches and offices for cash-strapped associations.

Under Fifa's Financial Assistance Programme, introduced in 2001, each of the ruling body's 209 member associations receive generous grants with more than $1 billion paid out during Blatter's tenure.

5 things Bafana must do to beat Ghana

Bafana have one last shot to qualify for the Afcon quarter-finals. Here are 5 things they need to do to get there.

|||

Johannesburg - Bafana Bafana have one last shot to keep the nations hopes of a second Afcon trophy alive. Here are five things they need to do to beat Ghana:

Please pull the trigger

Watching Bafana at this Africa Cup of Nations has been like visiting to a strip club: The build-up is lovely to watch, but nobody scores at the end of the night. South Africa have played some of the best and most attractive football of this tournament, with some nice combination play. Their pace has been too much to deal with for both Algeria and Senegal, who were carved up in Bafana’s first two Afcon matches. But they have been guilty of over-elaboration in front of goal, with the players looking for another pass instead of trying to have a crack at goal. Tokelo Rantie, Sibusiso Vilakazi and Bernard Parker have to start taking responsibility upfront, because there aren’t any extra points on offer for scoring beautiful goals. Captain Dean Furman hit the crossbar with one of the handful of shots from outside the penalty area, so why not have another couple of pots against Ghana?

Don’t lose concentration

There isn’t much to do in Mongomo. In fact this is a one-horse town without a horse... So goodness knows where the Bafana players’ minds drifted off to during crucial moments in their first two matches. That spell after Rantie’s missed penalty and Thulani Hlatshwayo’s own goal against Algeria may cost them a spot in the quarter-finals. Bafana lost their shape and completely fell apart, and they conceded three rather simple goals in the space of 20 minutes against the Desert Foxes. Against Senegal, Bafana also went to sleep from the set-piece which the Lions of Teranga scored from, as the goalkeeper Jackson Mabokgwane and his defenders looked each other deep into the eye and wondered who is going to jump and clear the ball. Bafana can’t afford any slip-ups tonight. Quality players punish mistakes, and this Ghana side is a classy outfit.

Appoint a permanent captain before the Ghana match

Coach Shakes Mashaba’s captaincy rotation seems to be backfiring. The logic of grooming 11 leaders on the field is a good one. But what if 11 leaders need some leadership themselves? Dean Furman has captained Bafana in the first two matches, but he seems to be afraid to impose himself on the team and take the job by the scruff of the neck. Furman is one of the senior players in the side, and a guy who is in everybody’s ear at training sessions and during a match. So why not give him the captaincy armband on a permanent basis, instead of saying “we are going to see who strikes it lucky in the next match”. Bafana need a permanent leader who can take control and have the confidence to do that. They needed that sort of leadership during that shaky period against Algeria, and they needed the guidance so that they don’t repeat the same mistake against Senegal.

Jali and Furman need to start firing as a duo

Andile Jali and Furman were phenomenal in the Bafana engine room during the qualifiers. They were an integral part of Bafana’s counter-attacking strategy, as they broke up attacks and then got the team moving forward at a rate of knots. However, the duo’s road show in Mongomo has been a bit disappointing, as they haven’t really fired a unit. In the first match against Algeria, Jali was a class above any other midfielder on the pitch, including Tottenham Hotspur’s Nabil Bentaleb. The former Orlando Pirates man got forward from midfield and added numbers to Bafana’s attacks. But in the second match it was Furman who had an absolute blinder when he kept the physical Senegalese players at bay. Tonight, though, both players will have to fire against a Ghana side with lots of pace and skill going forward. Furman and Jali also need to give their attacking players the platform to try and improve their goal difference.

Mathoho must keep Gyan quiet

Eric Mathoho is one of the most undervalued players in this Bafana side. He was probably the team’s best player in the qualifiers, along with the late Senzo Meyiwa, as South Africa only conceded three goals in six matches. But he is going to come up against one of African football’s great strikers in Asamoah Gyan, and the battle between the two could be key element as far the outcome of the match, and the group, is concerned. Mathoho is a colossus in the air, while he is also comfortable with the ball at his feet. He will also have to guide Ayanda Gcaba next two him, as Rivaldo Coetzee may be a bit of a risk against Ghana because of his lack of match practice. Gyan had a bout of malaria last week, and came back to play 90 minutes of football and score a goal against Algeria. Goodness knows what he can do when he is properly fit!

RVP fears Manchester United exit

Robin van Persie admits his form has been poor this season and says he does not know if Man United will keep him.

|||

London - Robin van Persie admits his form has been poor this season and says he does not know if Manchester United will keep him after his contract ends in 18 months.

Van Persie’s close relationship with Louis van Gaal was tested to the limit in the first half of the campaign and the United manager considered dropping him after a “very bad game” against Arsenal in November.

The Holland striker’s form has improved since but he has scored only eight goals and missed one of the few chances United created in Friday’s goalless draw at Cambridge United in the FA Cup fourth round.

United have yet to open talks over a new deal and Van Persie, who will be 32 in August, admits the situation is out of his hands. “It is not up to me,” he said. “I am here for 18 months. I don’t know what is going to happen after that. We’ll have to wait and see.”

Van Persie, who fired United to the title with 26 Premier League goals after moving from Arsenal to Old Trafford for £24million in 2012, admits he can do much better and revealed that he is constantly questioning his contribution to the team.

He said: “This year I have played something like 20 games and scored eight goals - I am not happy with that. I want more. I will do everything, every day in training and during the games, I will keep doing what I have been doing for the last 10 years to make those goals.

“We are not scoring enough goals, including me. Everyone in the team is responsible. Everyone feels responsible. I do definitely.

‘It is a very thin line between scoring a load of goals and only a couple. I know what I have to do to create those opportunities. I will keep doing that. At the moment, it is not enough. In my last couple of games I didn’t score. Can I really blame myself for that? I am always asking myself that question.

“Even in games against Cambridge and top games, how many chances do strikers get? One? Two? So you have to take them.

“Sometimes it is a thin line between winning 1-0, 2-0, 3-0 or drawing or losing because it is just based on those little chances. We could have won 4-2, 3-1, 3-0 against Cambridge. Then we would be having a different conversation.

“Against Cambridge, I don’t think I can blame (Angel) di Maria for the great pass or blame myself for the way I hit it.

“Against Spurs, there was that ball from (Michael) Carrick and I had one touch, another touch and another. I went to finish with my right leg. Normally, nine out of 10 keepers will make a move and it will be a goal. But not that day.”

Meanwhile, the chances of United goalkeeper David de Gea moving to Real Madrid in the summer receded on Monday as Fifa launched an investigation into their signing of under-age players that could see them incur a transfer ban.

Barcelona have been banned from signing players in 2015 and Real have now been asked to provide the game’s governing body with documentation for around 60 boys signed by the club since 2009, on the suspicion that they have broken the same rules.

De Gea’s agent Jorge Mendes admitted last week that his client could end up at the Bernabeu Stadium, but a transfer ban would put an end to that move.

Real are also one of several clubs hopeful of signing Borussia Dortmund’s Marco Reus at the end of the season and their removal from the 2015 transfer market would drastically alter the prospects of an English club landing the midfielder.

Club official Emilio Butragueno said on Monday Real are not worried about the investigation, which focuses on two 12-year-olds brought to Madrid from Venezuela in 2012.

Manuel Godoy and Fernando Macias were on a tour of trials with big clubs but before they could reach River Plate and Inter Milan, Madrid snapped them up.

Real’s defence centres on an insistence that neither youngster played for the club. There is also a suggestion that Godoy was withdrawn in 2013 when the club were alerted to the possibility that they had broken the rules, while Macias has since moved to Rayo Vallecano.

Madrid have filed all relevant documentation and believe it will show they have not contravened the rule which allows the signing of under 18s from outside the EU only if the player’s parents have had to relocate to the country where the club is based, for non-football reasons.

‘Fearless’ Liverpool ready for Chelsea

Brendan Rodgers has urged his team to exploit any lingering fear in Chelsea’s squad and fire Liverpool to Wembley.

|||

London - Brendan Rodgers has urged his players to exploit any lingering ‘trepidation’ in Chelsea’s squad and fire Liverpool to Wembley.

Liverpool’s manager is aware of the challenge his side face in the second leg of Tuesday night’s Capital One Cup semi-final but insists, with the score tied at 1-1, they travel to Stamford Bridge without fear.

Having seen Bradford stun Chelsea 4-2 in the FA Cup on Saturday, Rodgers believes the time is right for Liverpool to attack.

He said: “Chelsea will have great motivation as, after a game like that, you want to put it right. But it will be in the back of their minds, even at 2-0 up, that they can lose so there can be trepidation.

“Winning a trophy is a priority for us but you have got to get there first and we will do everything we can to reach Wembley.”

Rodgers, who is certain not to risk Daniel Sturridge in his squad even though the striker has travelled to London, has yet to beat Chelsea in six attempts as Liverpool manager.

He said: “If you look at our record over a number of years it hasn’t been great but that’s irrelevant in this game. We’re coming off the back of a good performance in the first leg. Anyone who saw it will think we could have won comfortably. Our retention of the ball and speed can hurt any opponent.”

Liverpool’s form has been steadily improving and their best recent results have been on the road, which is why Rodgers is not fazed by Saturday’s 0-0 draw at home to Bolton in the FA Cup or the prospect of having to beat Chelsea on home soil.

“It is a different game at Stamford Bridge but we were a real threat at home,’ said Rodgers, who has also included Mario Balotelli in his travelling party. ‘The team’s confidence is really high.”

Senegal lash out at Sakho 'miracle'

Diafra Sakho was blasted by Senegal coach Alain Giresse for playing in the FA Cup after pulling out of Afcon over an injury.

|||

London - West Ham striker Diafra Sakho was blasted by Senegal coach Alain Giresse on Monday night for playing in the FA Cup on Sunday despite pulling out of the Africa Cup of Nations with a back injury. The 25-year-old came off the bench to score a late winner against Bristol City, but Senegal officials were not expecting him to play.

Giresse said: “I’m very surprised to learn he played. When you cannot fly for six weeks and then suddenly you are playing a football game. There must be miraculous medicine in England.

“This sets a dangerous precedent because in future you are going to have players claiming they cannot catch planes to Africa but who can still play football (for their clubs). It is a debate that deserves more discussion.”

Senegal did not demand a ban on him playing for his club during the Nations Cup after threatening to do so.

“He’s still unable to fly,” West Ham boss Sam Allardyce explained. “We had to drive him down in a limo but it was about putting him on the bench with the hope we didn’t have to use him.

“We don’t think we’ve done anything wrong.”

Senegal have slight advantage in Group C

Senegal take a slight advantage into the final round of Group C matches in the African Nations Cup.

|||

Equatorial Guinea - Senegal take a slight advantage into the final round of Group C matches in the African Nations Cup on Tuesday but face a tight battle to secure a quarter-final berth as all four teams are still in contention for the two places up for grabs.

A draw with Algeria in Malabo would be enough to ensure Senegal's progress but their opponents need to win if they want to be 100 percent sure of continuing in the tournament and justify their place as the highest-ranked African country in the Fifa standings.

Algeria have three points alongside Ghana, who play South Africa in Mongomo.

A win for Ghana will qualify them but South Africa, bottom of the standings with one point, are also still in the race. However, South Africa can only progress if they beat Ghana and Algeria lose at the same time.

Ghana are boosted by Asamoah Gyan's recovery from a bout of malaria.

Ronaldo must be punished, says Neymar

Barca striker Neymar says players are often provoked, but must expect punishment if they retaliate as Ronaldo did.

|||

Barcelona - Barcelona striker Neymar says players are often provoked, but must expect punishment if they retaliate as Cristiano Ronaldo did during Real Madrid's 2-1 win at Cordoba.

Ronaldo was sent off on a straight red card for punching and kicking defender Edimar inside Cordoba's penalty area during a Spanish league clash. Ronaldo apologised on his Twitter account saying, “I ask forgiveness from everyone, especially Edimar, for my thoughtless act.”

“Those of us playing as forwards are exposed to provocations and intimidation and sometimes you lose your nerve,” Neymar said. “It's clear we cannot do that under any circumstances. He must be punished because of the aggression.”

If Ronaldo is given a three-match ban, he will miss scheduled matches against Real Sociedad and Atletico Madrid and a postponed round-16 match against Sevilla.

Van Praag joins Fifa presidential race

Dutchman Michael van Praag became the fourth man to challenge Sepp Blatter for the Fifa presidency.

|||

Nyon - Dutchman Michael van Praag became the fourth man to challenge Sepp Blatter for the Fifa presidency when he joined the race on Monday, saying it was time to bring soccer's governing body back to normal.

The 67-year-old president of the Royal Dutch Football Federation (KNVB) and former Ajax Amsterdam chairman is an outspoken critic of Blatter and said he was “very worried” about the state of soccer's scandal-plagued governing body.

The KNVB, which announced Van Praag's decision on its website, said he already had the backing of five national associations which is needed to mount a challenge.

Former Fifa deputy secretary general Jerome Champagne and Prince Ali Bin Al-Hussein of Jordan have already declared their intention to run and challenge incumbent Blatter at the May 29 election in Zurich.

So too has former France international David Ginola, in what is widely regarded as a publicity stunt.

Van Praag's decision, three days before the deadline for candidates to confirm their bids, is a potential blow for Prince Ali who had been backing on UEFA's support.

However, UEFA did not immediately promise support for any of the candidates.

“UEFA believes there should be an open and public debate about the future of Fifa, we believe it would be positive for football if credible candidates seek nominations,” secretary general Gianni Infantino told a news conference.

“There is no candidate of UEFA, as a matter of fact because UEFA has no vote.”

“From now until May 29, there must be an open debate, a public debate about the future of football, and on May 29, each association will decide according to their conscience,” said Infantino.

Van Praag has been KNVB president since 2008 and was chairman of Ajax from 1989 to 2003, during which time they won the UEFA Cup and European Champions League.

His father Jaap was Ajax chairman from 1964 to 1978, during which they won three successive European Cup titles.

Van Praag, described by UEFA's website as a musician who plays the drums, piano, vibraphone and tuba, was taking part in a UEFA executive committee meeting as the KNVB announced his decision. However, he did not speak to reporters at UEFA headquarters.

“It is well known that I am very worried about Fifa,” said van Praag on the Dutch FA website. “It is high time that the organisation is fully normalised and puts its full focus back on football.

“For a time, I hoped that there would be a credible opponent, but that's simply not happened. Then you must not only use words but also act decisively and take responsibility. Therefore I present myself now as a candidate.”

Van Praag launched an outspoken attack on Blatter last year during the Fifa Congress in Sao Paulo.

“Mr Blatter, this is nothing personal, but if you look at Fifa's reputation over the last seven or eight years, it is being linked to all kinds of corruption and all kinds of old boys' networks things,” he said.

“Fifa has an executive president and you are not making things easy for yourself and I do not think you are the man for the job any longer.”

Cape Verde, Zambia knocked out of Afcon

Cape Verde and Zambia were both eliminated from the African Cup of Nations after playing to a draw.

|||

Ebebiyin, Equatorial Guinea - Cape Verde and Zambia were both eliminated from the African Cup of Nations on Monday after playing to a 0-0 draw on a rain-soaked field.

The game was played through heavy rain at Ebebiyin Stadium, particularly early in the second half. Puddles developed quickly and the field was flooded, stopping the flow of the ball. But as the rain slowed, the ground drained remarkably well, allowing for play to continue.

In the other Group B match, Congo came back to hold Tunisia to a 1-1 draw in Bata, putting both teams into the quarter-finals.

Zambia, which won the African Cup in 2012, finished the group stage with only two points. Cape Verde had three.

News sport : Jamal Crawford's huge 4th quarter leads Clips to win

Los Angeles Clippers reserve scorer Jamal Crawford came into Monday night's home game vs. the Denver Nuggets in a poor run of form. Crawford hadn't shot 50 percent or better from the field since January 10 (for seven consecutive games), an issue for a player known for his ability to heat up quickly. The Clippers had performed well over that stretch (winning five of seven), but they had missed production from their best bench scorer.

After the Nuggets game, Crawford's run of sub-50-percent-shooting games sits at eight in a row. But it's safe to say that no one cares after a fourth quarter performance that essentially won his team the game. With 21 of his 23 points in the final period, Crawford helped the Clippers overcome a 10-point deficit and extended their winning streak to five straight wins.

Yet Crawford's most impressive play of the night was an assist, not a basket. With 1:23 remaining and the score tied at 94-94, he saved a risky pass from Chris Paul with a behind-the-back dish right to Matt Barnes for an easy lay-in:

The Clippers never relinquished the lead and ended up with a 102-98 victory. Crawford, the league's second-best fourth-quarter scorer this season behind Damian Lillard, also hit three of four free throws in the final five seconds to ice the game. Take a look at his game-winning 12 minutes here:

His play was impressive enough to cause DeAndre Jordan (who had his own highlight sequence earlier in the game) to jump into the postgame interview so he could literally sing Crawford's praises (via SB Nation):

Maybe Jordan will record an album if Crawford does something similar the next time out.
