News sport : The Rolex 24 isn't immune to roadkill (Photo)

Opossums are active at night. A significant portion of the Rolex 24 sports car race is run when the sun is down. After reading the headline and the previous two sentences, you know where we're going with this post.

Andy Lally tweeted Sunday morning that he reported hitting debris around 5 a.m. The team never found what Lally hit until the team made the following discovery a few hours later. Yes, the picture is of a dead animal, so if you don't want to look, you're warned to stop scrolling now.

In an interview with Fox Sports 1, Lally noted that his team's Porsche has a rear engine and that the opossum went through the front of the car and made it through to the trunk and the engine. He hit it after the car in front him swerved and clipped it.

The opossum wasn't the sole ruinition of the Magnus Racing No. 44's race, however. The team had gearbox issues and was running a bunch of laps down when Lally had his wildlife encounter.

Winless Afcon pair still in running

Zambia and Cape Verde still have a chance to advance to the Afcon quarter-finals despite being winless so far.

|||

Malabo, Equatorial Guinea – Two of the surprise teams from the last two African Cup tournaments still have a chance to advance to this year’s quarter-finals despite being winless so far.

Zambia won its only African Cup of Nations title in 2012, but has just one point from two Group B matches this time. In 2013, when the 16-team continental tournament moved to odd-numbered years, Cape Verde unexpectedly reached the knockout round in its debut but has only earned two points in Equatorial Guinea.

On Monday, the two teams will meet in Ebebiyin with the winner having a chance to advance.

“It’s not how much you fall, but how strong do you get up ... and move forward,” Zambia coach Honour Janza said. “And that’s what Zambia is going to do in the next game, it’s how we go forward from the last match.”

Tunisia, which leads the group with four points, will face Congo in Bata. Congo also has two points and could advance with a win.

The winner of the group will face the second-place team from Group A in Ebebiyin on Saturday. Whichever teams finishes second will next face the Group A winner on the same day in Bata.

The Tunisians are the only team to earn a victory in the group so far, but they could still be eliminated with a loss to Congo depending on the result in the other match.

“Football is not statistics,” Tunisia goalkeeper Aymen Mathlouthi said.

“The next game will be so important for us to get through.”

Cape Verde should have some confidence heading into its final group match because the team from the island nation finished first in its qualifying pool ahead of Zambia. Each team won at home, but Cape Verde had already qualified for the final tournament when it lost in Zambia.

“I think we know about their quality and they know about us,” Cape Verde midfielder Toni Varela said. “During the two games that we have played against them, we played against a good technical team, a lot of individual quality, so we are prepared.” – Sapa-AP

Key Algeria striker to miss crunch game

Striker Islam Slimani is set to miss Algeria’s decisive Afcon final group game against Senegal.

|||

Malabo, Equatorial Guinea – Striker Islam Slimani will miss Algeria’s decisive final group game against Senegal at the African Cup of Nations.

The Algeria Football Federation says Slimani was injured in the 1-0 loss to Ghana, missed training on Saturday and will be sidelined against Senegal after medical tests. The federation did not specify what the injury was.

Slimani is one of the team’s most important attacking players and scored in a 3-1 win over South Africa at the start of the group stage.

Algeria came to the African Cup as one of the tournament favorites but is not yet certain of a place in the quarter-finals following its stoppage-time loss to Ghana on Friday. Algeria is third in Group C and needs to beat Senegal on Tuesday to be certain of progressing. – Sapa-AP

Balotelli needs to lift his game

Mario Balotelli must improve in training if he wants to get back into the squad, Brendan Rodgers says.

|||

London – Out-of-favour Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli needs to improve in training if he wants to get back into the squad, manager Brendan Rodgers has said.

Italian Balotelli, who is yet to score a league goal in 12 appearances since his $23.98 million move from AC Milan in August, was left out of the squad that drew 0-0 with second-tier Bolton Wanders at Anfield in the FA Cup fourth round on Saturday.

Liverpool started the game without a recognised striker on the pitch, later introducing forward Fabio Borini while target man Rickie Lambert remained on the bench.

Rodgers revealed after the match that the 24-year-old Balotelli had not done enough in training to warrant inclusion for the cup tie.

“He knows exactly what is required to be in this squad before he can be in the team,” Rodgers said of the striker.

“I am judging it every day in training – Mario is exactly the same as every other player, there is no special treatment for anyone.

“Borini and Lambert are working tirelessly in training and when they go on they have contributed and young Jordan Rossiter, on the bench today, has been brilliant in training and I have to judge it on that.

“If you want to contribute you have to be at it every single day in training in order to be in the squad on matchday,” the manager added.

Liverpool will welcome back England striker Daniel Sturridge, who has suffered a series of injuries since August, to first team training on Sunday.

Rodgers said the 25-year-old, who struck 21 league goals as Liverpool finished runners-up in the Premier League last season, has an outside chance of featuring in Tuesday’s League Cup semi-final second-leg at Chelsea.

Sturridge’s return will further dent Balotelli’s hopes of a return to action but Rodgers said the Italian understood that he must up his game to compete with Liverpool’s other attacking options.

“It is difficult for him (Balotelli) but he knows the level of (where) this team is at - you see the aggression in our pressing and if you can’t do that you are not going to be a part of what this team is trying to achieve,” the Northern Irishman explained.

Ronaldo suspension a Real worry

A suspension for Cristiano Ronaldo is the latest concern for Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti.

|||

Barcelona – A suspension for Cristiano Ronaldo is the latest concern for coach Carlo Ancelotti whose Real Madrid side are looking far from the slick machine that strung together 22 straight victories before Christmas.

Ronaldo was the inspiration behind that Spanish record-winning streak but he had one of his poorest matches in a Real shirt in the 2-1 victory over Cordoba on Saturday, the win coming through a late penalty from Gareth Bale.

Real still lead the La Liga table by a point and have a game in hand but they have an in-form Barcelona breathing down their necks.

While Real are stuttering, Barca have clicked into gear and tore apart Elche 6-0 and Atletico Madrid are also looking strong, four points behind after a 3-1 win over Rayo Vallecano.

Ronaldo was unable to make an impact against Cordoba and his frustration saw him lash out with his hand against Jose Crespo which the referee missed and then minutes later he was sent off for kicking out at Edimar.

He was quick to apologise on Twitter after the game but he is now likely to be suspended for the next two matches against Real Sociedad and Sevilla but could also miss the derby with Atletico.

It was generally a disjointed match from Real whose rhythm and link-up play has dropped noticeably in recent weeks.

They lost their first match back after the Christmas break as they looked sluggish against Valencia and then followed it up with elimination from the King's Cup at the hands of Atletico Madrid.

Injuries have played their part, with Luka Modric and Isco missing from the centre of the pitch against Cordoba, which has put a greater demand on the shoulders of Toni Kroos who is looking weary.

Goalkeeper Iker Casillas was still upbeat and pointed towards the mentality of the players that helped them beat Cordoba.

“These are the types of victories that win you leagues,” Casillas told reporters.

“It was difficult for us and we didn't play at our best but we are now boosted by the three points. It came more as a result of effort than anything else.” – Reuters

Only victory will do for Bafana

The calculators came out straight after final whistle in the game between Bafana and Senegal.

|||

Mongomo – The calculators were hauled out straight after the final whistle was blown in the Group C match between Bafana Bafana and Senegal on Friday night.

Ghana tore the Africa Cup of Nations group wide open with their 1-0 win against Algeria in the earlier match on Friday.

However, South Africa could have torn it to shreds had they beaten Senegal.

Now Bafana head into the final round of group matches on Tuesday (8pm) at the bottom of the table and looking for victory over Ghana.

Also, they need a favourable result in the other match between Senegal and Algeria for them to qualify for the quarter-finals.

It gets a bit complicated because of Caf’s head-to-head rule for the tournament.

The one thing Bafana have to do is win, and, depending on the result in the other match, win handsomely.

If Algeria and Senegal draw, and Bafana beat Ghana, the South Africans and the Desert Foxes will be on the same number of points.

But Bafana will pack their bags because they lost to Algeria in their first match.

And that is a problem. If Bafana romp to a 3-0 lead against Ghana at the Estadio de Mongomo, and news filters across to Malabo where the other match will be played, then Algeria and Senegal could just play out for a draw, because Ghana will then be out of the equation.

While Ghana are still in it, the other teams must go for the win. What a nightmare situation!

So, Bafana can only go through if they win and there is a win for either Senegal or Algeria.

If Senegal win and Bafana win, Senegal and Bafana will progress to the last eight because they will have more points than the other teams.

But if Algeria beat Senegal, then Bafana’s goal difference needs to be better than Senegal’s tally, as the two teams will have the same number of points, and they played to a 1-1 draw in their meeting.

Shakes waits for miracle

Bafana strikers desperately need to shake the shooting blues in Ghana decider.

|||

MONGOMO, Equatorial Guinea – “Football has its own miracles.” This was Bafana Bafana coach Shakes Mashaba’s frank response when asked if he thought his team could yet qualify for the quarter-finals in the Africa Cup of Nations.

Bafana’s 1-1 draw against Senegal at the Estadio de Mongomo on Friday night gave them a glimmer of hope in Group C. A win for the South Africans would have blown the group wide open as Bafana, Senegal, Algeria and Ghana would have had three points each.

Instead, Bafana are languishing at the bottom of the standings, needing a win against Ghana on Tuesday night and hoping for a favourable result in the other match between Algeria and Senegal.

“You never know what can happen,” Mashaba said after the match.

“We still have another game to play, so don’t write us off just yet. Football has its own miracles. With one game to go, we can still surprise a lot of people.”

Bafana will need to score goals against Ghana if Mashaba is going to be declared a prophet by Tuesday night.

The South Africans have been like a guy with all the moves on the dance floor, but who still can’t go home with the girl. They created a plethora of chances in their games against Algeria and Senegal, but have only a point to show for their effort.

Their build-up and interplay have been superb, and the locals have adopted Bafana as their second team because of their beautiful football. But they can’t seem to get the ball into the back of the net.

Often it’s because they take one touch too many or they are trying to walk the ball past the goalkeeper.

Oupa Manyisa finished his chance with lots of composure against Senegal. There will have to be more of that sort of coolness in front of the goal if they are to beat the Black Stars, who bounced back from an opening game defeat by beating Algeria with a last-minute Asamoah Gyan strike in the early match on Friday.

“We still have a chance, but then we have to win the game and score three goals. Anything is possible, and I believe we have the beating of Ghana.

“We will solve that problem of finishing, and I can tell you one team will pay dearly.

“People asked whether we could match the opposition at Afcon and we did.

“The problem has been scoring goals, but the day we score it’s going to be five.”

However, to score five someone must at least take a shot.

Bafana are also not shooting enough, and that may be a confidence issue, because of all the criticism from back home, most of it directed at striker Tokelo Rantie.

Rantie finds himself in such wonderful positions, because of his pace and underrated power. But he and his strike-partner, Sibusiso Vilakazi, should try to shoot immediately and not take that extra touch in the danger area.

“Except for the Nigeria game in Nigeria, where Rantie went for goal, in the other games we tried to roll the ball into the back of the net. Imagine if we start shooting,” Mashaba said.

“We have to shoot on Tuesday.”

Bafana have now lost two central defenders in two games, with Thulani Hlatshwayo coming off with concussion in the first half against Senegal.

Rivaldo Coetzee injured a knee against Algeria.

Orlando Pirates’ Ayanda Gcaba came in on Friday night and did well, as he showed aggression and fight. He could start alongside Eric Mathoho against Ghana if Coetzee and Hlatshwayo are unavailable.

“In two games we lost two crucial players in defence, but Ayanda came in and did well because he was aggressive. We went for the headers and the 50-50 tackles,” Mashaba said.

“The only thing we have to do is encourage our defenders to carry the ball into the (midfield) space to give us the numerical advantage.”

News sport : Brandon Peel's improbable buzzer-beater sweetens a sour season

Next time your team is down by three points or less with 1 second remaining in the game and the length of the court to travel and you think all is lost, remember Brandon Peel.

The 6-foot-7 forward snatched a baseball pass out of the air near the 3-point line, spun and shot Saturday in game that was tied 50-50. The ball splashed through the nylon and Central Connecticut State snapped an 11-game losing streak with an improbable buzzer-beater 53-50 victory over Wagner.

It was CCSU's first victory since Dec. 10 and only its third win of the season. It was also the first time the Blue Devils walked off the court victorious in a Northeastern Conference game this season.

Peel, a junior from Forestville, Maryland, scored 17 points in the game with 13 rebounds. It was his fifth double-double of the season.

Here is another view of Peel's game-winner.

News sport : Team Foligno wins Skills Challenge Relay (Video)

To interpret the rules of the Skills Challenge Relay, one needs a Ph.D. in something like rocket science. Here's proof from the NHL website:

via NHL.com

The players were challenged with taking one timers from different angles, making passes into tiny nets, skating and puckhandling around cardboard Gatorade bottles, and puckhandling around spaced out pegs.

What did we learn? A few things...

First, the GoPro cameras on helmets are a cool idea, except they can make those prone to motion sickness very nauseous. Second, Ryan Getzlaf is King of Tiny Nets! And third, if Jeremy Roenick and/or Pierre McGuire says a player is good or bad at a certain skill, they will instantly become the opposite of what they declared.

Final Results: Team Foligno wins 2-1 somehow.

News sport : Ryan Johansen wins Breakaway Challenge after fan vote (Video)

The Breakaway Challenge is all about creativity.

Well, creativity, to a point.

"Me and Mark Giordano were talking about it on the bus a little bit earlier," said Gaudreau, "and thought it would be a good idea since we play for Flames. I don't think they were going to let me do it."

So fans are denied the spectacle of one of the rising stars in the league employing fire during his All-Star skills debut. What else did the players involved have in store?

Taking to the ice for Team Foligno, we had Alex Ovechkin, Claude Giroux, and Ryan Johansen.

Ovechkin and Giroux were showcasing their puck handling skills in moves reminiscent of lacrosse, and in Ovi's case, baseball. But the Capitals captain soon realized his future was not in America's pastime.

"Probably Nationals didn't sign me," he said. "100-percent. I can be water boy? Bat boy, yeah."

The event really belonged to Johansen, who put his creativity on display.

Up first, a nod to the National Champs from THE Ohio State University (and pandering to the home crowd).

Johansen said he went looking for a Buckeyes football helmet on Saturday, but couldn't find one that fit his head.

Next, Johansen went for the heartstrings by grabbing the 7-year old son of the Blue Jackets head athletic trainer Mike Vogt and giving him the coolest moment of his young life thus far:

Finally, Johansen and Team Foligno teammates close it out with one of the most iconic moves in hockey movie history - The Flying V.

It wasn't nearly as successful for the NHLers than it was for the Mighty Ducks of yore. Side note: Ryan Getzlaf was present for the Flying V, but did not participate. As Michelle Drinnenberg noted:

For Team Toews was Vladimir Tarasenko, Jakub Voracek, and Johnny Gaudreau.

Tarasenko was pitted against goaltender Brian Elliott, his teammate from the St. Louis Blues. Although they are on different teams for the All-Star festivities, they didn't let that get between them. In his first attempt, Tarasenko and Elliott teamed up to create the first ever hockey action-shot selfie. Elliott continued to oblige his teammate by donning a blindfold for the second shot, and holding a target in his glove-hand on the third.

Jakub Voracek and Johnny Gaudreau were unremarkable until they teamed up for one of the best moments of the night. Drawing from the inspiration of Johansen's shot with the little tyke above, Voracek grabs a youngster of his own and creates magic, even without fire:

FINAL RESULT:

Voting was opened up to the fans on Twitter, and surprise, surprise, local boy Ryan Johansen walked away with the crown. And probably an open invite from Urban Meyer to drop by the school any time.

News sport : Brian Elliott, Vladimir Tarasenko take Breakaway Challenge selfie (Photo)

There is a first time for everything, right? Now we have our first ever hockey action shot selfie.

They may be on the same team in the NHL, but for All-Star weekend in Columbus Vladmir Tarasenko and Brian Elliott of the St. Louis Blues are opponents.

Although, opponents is a term that should be used very loosely when it comes to these two competing against each other in the Breakaway Challenge. It's an event that encourages two things: 1) creativity by the shooter, and 2) doing everything you can NOT to get injured as the goaltender.

With this is mind, the Elliott and Tarasenko teamed up to create social media magic - a hockey selfie.

We'd like to see Kim Kardashian and her minions try to pull something like this off.

News sport : Jonathan Drouin wins NHL Fastest Skater competition (Video)

Jonathan Drouin won’t be playing in Sunday’s All-Star Game, so he did all of his work during the Skills Competition. The Tampa Bay Lightning rookie won the Fastest Skater competition with a time of 13.103 helping Team Foligno grab an early 5-0 lead on Team Toews.

The event began in humorous fashion with a heat between Phil Kessel and Tyler Seguin, because why not. Kessel ended up beating Seguin in a close race.

Drouin’s time is the second fastest ever behind Carl Hagelin’s 13.218 since they revised the event in 2008.

FINAL RESULTS:

Jonathan Drouin 13.103

Mike Hoffman 13.163

Phil Kessel 13.596

Tyler Seguin 13.631

Jiri Sekac 13.683

Aaron Ekblad 14.048

Zemgus Girgensons 14.101

Vladimir Tarasenko 14.386

News sport : Take a look at Ernie Banks' 1953 scouting report

The path Ernie Banks took to the big leagues might be just as amazing as any of his career accomplishments. His high school, Booker T. Washington in Dallas, did not have a baseball team while he attended, so he was forced to go elsewhere to develop his skills. Banks actually played fast-pitch softball during the summer in a local church league, and later played semipro baseball for the Amarillo Colts.

Despite scouts having very little to go, Banks was eventually spotted and recruited by a Negro League scout named Bill Blair. At age 19, Banks signed with the Kansas City Monarchs, earning $7.00 a game. The money wasn't much, but the opportunity proved priceless because it finally allowed Banks to be seen and scouted.

From there, Banks went on to serve two years in the U.S. Army. When he returned to baseball, he found the doors were now wide open. His name had drawn some attention, and scouts like Hugh Wise, who filed this most interesting scouting report on July 28, 1953, were quickly on his trail.

(Dan Okrent on Twitter)

If there's such a thing as a perfect scouting report in baseball, this might be it. All of the baseball that would make Banks a Hall of Famer were on display, as were the qualities that endeared him to baseball fans for generations to come. He was the same person we all grew to know, even as a 22-year-old.

Not long after this report was filed, the Monarchs sold Banks’ contract to the Chicago Cubs for the recommended $10,000. As Wise noted, Banks was ready to play right away, so he was immediately placed on the major league squad, debuting on Sept. 17, 1953.

The rest, as they say, was baseball history.

Then again, many of us have been guilty of using a suit jacket as a sport coat in the past. Apparently pro athletes do too. And just because they're pro athletes doesn't mean they don't put their pants on one leg at a time.

News sport : Coastal Carolina announces plans for teal-colored field (Photo)

The trend of making college football field turf a color other than green has just taken a bluish-green turn.

Coastal Carolina announced via Twitter this week that it was in the process of finalizing plays to lay teal turf in its stadium for 2015.

You read that right, teal.

It’s that color that’s not quite green and not quite blue and definitely not turquoise. It’s the color of the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Miami Dolphins, but neither of those teams thought the color would look good on the turf.

This is what happens when you go 12-2 and finish as Big South co-champions for the third consecutive season. You start getting wild ideas about what football turf should really look like.

Go ahead, called me a traditionalist stick in the mud for thinking that grass should be green. Honestly, we can all blame Boise State for this.

After all, the Broncos were the first to go away from the traditional green field and use a bright blue (royal blue?) in its place. Then teams like Eastern Washington, Central Arkansas and Eastern Michigan all decided to get in on the field game turning their turf red and a couple shades of gray respectively.

Fear the day when the color green is the “strange” field color because this is a slippery slope, people.
