News sport : Don't ask Julian Edelman for Super Bowl tickets

A Super Bowl berth isn't just a dream for players, it's a dream for the players' friends, family, mail carriers, grocery baggers, dry cleaning attendants, and other assorted hangers-on. Everybody wants a taste of that sweet, sweet Super Bowl ticket action, and that can turn players into ticket brokers at a time when they need to be focusing on the most important game of their lives.

The Patriots are old hands at this postseason business, and that allows them to keep the grasping opportunists at bay. Julian Edelman, for instance, knows that the best way to keep people from asking for you for tickets every time is to repel them the first time.

"I'm a pretty big a-hole to all my friends and family," Edelman said. "They know that. When it's football time it's football time."

Last year, players got two complimentary tickets to the Super Bowl and had the option of buying up to 13 more tickets at face value, which at 2014 prices totaled anywhere from about $10,000 to $20,000.

The key for players, Edelman noted, is to stay in the groove. "I think you want to make the process as familiar as possible to what you're used to by going out and preparing like you try to do everyday," he said. "Going in the hot tub, the cold tub, getting your treatment every day. It's gonna be a little differnt. Usually the team that can handle that stuff the best is usually the team that comes out with a win."

And therein lies the rub. This game pits two teams very well familiar with "handling the stuff" of Super Bowl week. So if you're pulling for one team, you'd be well advised to start badgering the other one for tickets.

News sport : Auburn's Nick Marshall moving from QB to CB for the NFL draft

Auburn quarterback Nick Marshall reacts after teammate running back Cameron Artis-Payne scored on a 2-yard touchdown run against Wisconsin during the first quarter of the Outback Bowl NCAA college football game Thursday, Jan. 1, 2015, in Tampa, Fla. (AP Photo/Chris O'Meara) Nick Marshall’s quarterbacking days are done.

The former Auburn quarterback announced at the Senior Bowl on Tuesday that he would move to cornerback for the NFL draft.

Marshall was invited to the Senior Bowl as a quarterback.

"It wasn't difficult because I played cornerback coming up," Marshall said. "It won't be a hard transition for me to make. It's something that I know if I put my mind to it I can do anything that I want."

Marshall started his career as a cornerback at Georgia in 2011 before being dismissed from the team. He transferred to Garden City Community College were he became the starting quarterback for a year and later started for Auburn for two years. Marshall threw for 4,508 yards and 34 touchdowns with 13 interceptions during his two seasons at Auburn. He also rushed for 1,866 yards and 23 touchdowns.

While Marshall helped lead the Tigers to an SEC title and a spot in the national championship game in 2013, his passing accuracy was always a question. Even though he threw for more yards this season, he struggled with his accuracy and consistency at times.

Marshall played in 13 games at corner for Georgia and made five tackles.

News sport : Jim Harbaugh hires son Jay Harbaugh as Michigan tight ends coach

ANN ARBOR, MI - DECEMBER 30: Jim Harbaugh speaks as he is introduced as the new Head Coach of the University of Michigan. (Photo by Gregory Shamus/Getty Images) Jim Harbaugh didn’t have to look too hard to find the latest hire for his new staff at Michigan.

Harbaugh announced Tuesday that his son Jay Harbaugh will serve as the Wolverines’ tight ends coach and assistant special teams coach. Jay Harbaugh spent the past three seasons in the Baltimore Ravens organization under head coach John Harbaugh, Jim’s brother. In 2014, he was an offensive quality control coach for the Ravens.

“Jay gathered a wealth of experience the last three seasons coaching in the NFL and I am excited to have him join our coaching staff,” Jim Harbaugh said. “His passion for teaching the game is at the highest level and he will be an asset to our team. He did a phenomenal job in Baltimore and will do an excellent job mentoring our tight ends.”

In addition to working as a quality control coach where he “focused on statistical analysis, self-scouting reports and breakdowns of opposing defenses,” Harbaugh also spent time working with Baltimore’s video and weight room staff.

“It is an amazing opportunity and privilege to coach football at one of the premier universities in the world,” Jay Harbaugh said. “I’m ecstatic about being in Ann Arbor, and to be a part of building something special with the great people in our program.”

Before his time with the Ravens, Harbaugh was an undergraduate assistant under Mike Riley at Oregon State from 2008-2011. He also interned under his dad with the 49ers during the summer of 2011.

News sport : Hey NCAA, Bobby Bowden wants his vacated wins back too

Bobby Bowden attends a ceremony where he was given the WVU Outstanding Alumni Award during halftime against Kansas in Morgantown, W.Va., Saturday, Oct. 4, 2014. (AP Photo/Chris Jackson) The NCAA’s decision to restore Joe Paterno’s vacated wins left Bobby Bowden wondering, “what about me?”

“I’m all for Joe getting his hundred wins back and me getting my 12 back,” Bowden told the Orlando Sentinel.

Bowden, the long-time Florida State head coach, had 12 victories taken away from the 2006 and 2007 seasons by the NCAA due to an academic scandal that the FSU coaches were not implicated in. Paterno, the long-time Penn State coach, had 111 victories taken away as part of the NCAA’s (now mostly rescinded) sanctions related to the Jerry Sandusky scandal.

When those Paterno victories were vacated, it made Bowden the all-time winningest coach in major college football. Bowden felt uneasy about that distinction.

“It always felt like there should be an asterisk beside it,” Bowden said. “When I would give a speech and be introduced as the all-time winningest coach, it never felt right to me.”

If Bowden’s 12 wins were restored, his total would reach 388 – still 21 behind Paterno’s 409. For Bowden, it’s not about the record; it’s about the inconsistency the NCAA has shown with issues like this.

“The NCAA has been very inconsistent about how they take away victories,” Bowden said. “It’s not like we were trying to cover anything up. We did everything in our dad-gum power to get to the bottom of that situation.”

News sport : Damian Lillard's clutch cram pushes Blazers past Kings

Trailing by one point with less than one minute remaining in regulation, and with Portland Trail Blazers All-Star power forward LaMarcus Aldridge sidelined by a left hand injury sustained during the second quarter, the Sacramento Kings needed to do one thing above all others: keep Damian Lillard from getting to the basket.

You had one job, Kings.

[Follow Dunks Don't Lie on Tumblr: The best slams from all of basketball]

With Lillard dribbling high above the 3-point arc, defended by Sacramento point guard Darren Collison, Blazers big man Thomas Robinson raced up top to set a screen for his triggerman. As he did so, Kings forward Jason Thompson stepped just a bit too wide to his left on his attempt to hedge, creating a sliver of a lane to split the double team. Lillard, of course, found his way through that quicksilver crack, then streaked for the rim; Sacramento forward Derrick Williams thought briefly about jumping to protect the rim from Lillard's impending attack, but then, evidently, preferred not to appear on the poster.

“I’ll still raise up and shoot the three if I need to, but tonight, I took what they gave me,” Lillard said after the game, according to Blazers digital reporter Casey Holdahl. “I knew Jason Thompson was showing really hard on pick and rolls and there’d be an opportunity for me to split. So that’s what I did. When I split, the defense was kind of off balance, I guess, and I was able to get to the rim.”

I should say so.

The result? Another late-game detonation for Dame, a three-point Portland lead, and one heck of a call from Blazers radio voice Brian Wheeler:

Lillard's slam, which gave Portland a 95-92 advantage with 34 seconds left in the fourth, didn't entirely shut the door on the Kings, though. There were still some nervy moments in the final minute at the Moda Center, thanks to some uncharacteristically shaky free-throw shooting by Portland, as Lillard and the scuffling Nicolas Batum combined to split six potentially game-sealing freebies in the last 21 ticks.

But thanks to some highly questionable late-game play-calling by Kings coach Tyrone Corbin and equally sloppy execution by a Sacramento club playing without star center DeMarcus Cousins — who beasted on the interior to the tune of 22 points, 19 rebounds and four blocks, but fouled out with 1:42 remaining after another run-in with iffy offensive foul calls, this time while being defended by former Kings lottery pick Robinson — the Kings couldn't come up with an answer, as the Blazers held on for a 98-94 win that snapped a three-game losing skid.

Lillard finished with a Portland-high 22 points, albeit on 6-for-19 shooting, to go with six rebounds, five assists, three steals and zero turnovers in 38 minutes. It wasn't the prettiest win for the Blazers, who shot just 39.8 percent as a team (Lillard and Wesley Matthews combined to go just 4-for-21 from 3-point land), missed nine free throws and fell behind by as many as 13 points in the opening frame. But with Aldridge knocked out after slamming his non-shooting hand into Cousins' knee on defense, Stotts got some timely contributions from his reserves — nine points, three boards, a block and a steal from Meyers Leonard; nine points, three assists, two boards and two steals from Dorrell Wright; five points, six rebounds, three steals and those perhaps ill-gotten but inarguably important Boogie offensive foul calls from Robinson; six points and some much-needed jolts of offense and athleticism from Will Barton, etc. — and a cranked-up late-game defense that forced eight Kings turnovers in the fourth quarter to improve Portland's Northwest Division-leading record to 33-11, a full 10 games clear of the second-place Oklahoma City Thunder, and leaves Terry Stott's club 3 1/2 games back of the Golden State Warriors for the top spot in the Western Conference.

"That's eight more possessions that we had that they didn't," Lillard said of Sacramento's fourth-quarter miscues, according to Nick Daschel of the Associated Press. "It came down to us just tightening up. We got a little more physical on defense, got a little more stingy, and offensively we valued those possessions."

The Blazers might have to lean more on their defense (ranked fourth in the NBA in points allowed per possession) and pitch-ins from the pine for a little while. While X-rays on Aldridge's left hand were negative, it remains to be seen when he'll be ready to return to the court, which could complicate matters for a Portland club that's about to square off against some good competition — the Phoenix Suns, Washington Wizards, Cleveland Cavaliers and red-hot Atlanta Hawks — over the next week and a half. If Portland's got to go into battle without its All-Star power forward, though, it's awful nice for Blazers fans to know that they've got an All-Star point guard with a nose for the rim and a penchant for late-game punishment to fall back on.

News sport : Formula 1 moves up start times at five races after Bianchi crash

Formula 1 will start five races an hour earlier after the horrific crash Jules Bianchi had at the Japanese Grand Prix in 2014.

The races at Australia, Malaysia, China, Japan and Russia are affected. The season-opener is at Australia and will start at 4 p.m. local time. The move is to prevent races from being run as daylight starts to fade away.

From Eurosport:

The governing International Automobile Federation (FIA) set up an accident panel to investigate the crash and one of its recommendations, in a report published last month, was for earlier starts.

"It is proposed that a regulation or guideline be established such that the start time of an event shall not be less than four hours before either sunset or dusk, except in the case of night races," it said.

Formula One has floodlit races in Singapore, Abu Dhabi and Bahrain and the trend has been for later starts in Asia to boost television viewing figures in Europe.

Bianchi's crash happened as the race at Suzuka was being held in the beginnings of a typhoon. As the bad weather approached the country, race organizers and Formula 1 didn't move up the start time of the race to attempt to get it in before the weather turned for the worse. As the race was stopped and started because of heavy rain, Bianchi's car skidded off the track during a local yellow period as it was raining.

The local yellow was for Adrian Sutil's car, which was being retrieved by a crane at the time Bianchi's car skidded off course. Bianchi's car slammed into the crane and he sustained a severe head injury. He is still in a hospital in France.

News sport : How did Colts know Patriots' balls weren't inflated? And Gronk takes blame

Tom Brady's second quarter interception to the Indianapolis Colts didn't affect the outcome of the game, but it might end up being very costly after all.

When Colts linebacker D'Qwell Jackson picked off Brady deep in Colts territory during Sunday's AFC championship game, that's when deflate-gate started.

According to New York Newsday and WCVB in Boston, Jackson noticed the ball wasn't inflated as much as usual. He told a Colts equipment manager the ball felt under-inflated and gave it to him. The equipment man told Colts coach Chuck Pagano on the sideline. That message was relayed to Colts general manager Ryan Grigson in the press box, who told NFL director of football operations Mike Kensil, Newsday and WCVB said. Kensil told the on-field officials at halftime about the balls. Someone told Bob Kravitz of WTHR in Indianapolis, because he broke the story of the Patriots possibly deflating their game footballs which would help them throw and catch it better in the rain and now the NFL is looking into it.

And that's the recipe for the first crazy story leading up to the Super Bowl between the Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks.

“Did not notice, and that’s something for the league to handle," Pagano said, according to Newsday. "It’s not my place to comment on it.”

The game had an odd delay right after the second-half kickoff. The officials threw a ball that was spotted out to the sideline and replaced it with another ball. CBS' Mike Carey, a former official, speculated during the broadcast that the officials had mistakenly spotted the balls used for kickoffs only, but based on the timeline we have now of how deflate-gate came to light, there was likely more to it than that.

The Patriots have mostly shrugged it off. Coach Bill Belichick said the team will cooperate with the NFL. Tom Brady called it all ridiculous. And tight end Rob Gronkowski, as only Gronk can, hilariously said he was to blame:

The Patriots could end up being fined, and Kravitz said a source told him the league might even strip the Patriots of draft picks if it's found they deflated footballs after the officials inspected them before the game. Brady's lone interception against the Colts might end up being a lot worse for the Patriots than we could have imagined at the time.

News sport : Seattle fan offers despondent Green Bay fan his Richard Sherman jersey

Look, let's be honest: most grandstands at NFL games are frigid, roiling pits of alcohol-soaked sin, degradation and brawling occasionally punctuated by cheers or off-key chants. They're not places for normal humans, much less kids. But every so often, something happens that gives you faith in both humanity and NFL stadium denizens, as unlikely as that might sound.

According to KING 5 News of Seattle, two Packers fans, Tim McElravy and his 13-year-old son Austin, were enjoying the Green Bay-Seattle playoff game ... enjoying it very much until the final two minutes, matter of fact. The McElravys were taking plenty of grief from surrounding Seahawks fans, and at the end of the heartbreaking-for-Green-Bay game, couldn't even point to the scoreboard for salvation. Austin was despondent until a Seattle fan by the name of "PJ" literally buddied up to Austin and gave him the jersey off his back:

Tim McElravy tried to locate the mysterious "PJ" with a Facebook post that read:

"Can you help us get in contact with this fan? We attended the game today and my son and I are die-hard Packers fans At the game there was one fan (a 12) who was pretty vulgar to us and said some pretty rude things to me and my 13 year old son Austin. The whole game this guy in a Sherman Jersey was talking to us having a good time...offered to trade jerseys with us (but we did not want to give up our Green and Gold). At the end of the game my son congratulated him on a great game and PJ took off his Sherman Super Bowl Jersey and GAVE it to my son. We were moved to tears...the 12's showed what being a Seahawk fan is truly about."

KING News posted the above photo on its Instagram account, and soon enough, PJ was located. "It was an emotional decision at the time, it was my last year's Super Bowl jersey and Sherman is my favorite player," PJ said of handing over the jersey. "You attach memories to that. As awesome as those memories are, that kid is never going to forget that moment and that means more to me than that jersey."

Good on ya, PJ. Way to redeem football fans everywhere.

News sport : D. Johnson denies cocaine problem, suspension ahead of PGA Tour return

Dustin Johnson is set to make his PGA Tour return next month after announcing July 31, 2014, that he would be taking an indefinite leave of absence to deal with what he described as "personal challenges."

Several reports, most notably from golf.com, claimed Johnson's time away wasn't voluntary, but rather a six-month suspension for violating the PGA Tour's anti-doping program. The Tour denied that claim, with the whole thing likely more a matter of semantics than anything.

Beyond that, reports suggested Johnson had a problem with cocaine and, though tangential to Johnson's leave of absence, that he had an affair with a fellow PGA Tour player's wife.

In an interview with Sports Illustrated, his first since leaving golf last summer, Johnson offers an update on his progress, return and journey to fatherhood with fiancee Paulina Gretzky. Johnson denies any issues with cocaine, but does admit to a vague set of broader problems, for which he hired a team to help him deal with in his time away from the PGA Tour.

“I did not have a problem (with cocaine),” Johnson says. “It’s just something I’m not going to get into. I have issues. But that’s not the issue.”

Instead, he says Grey Goose vodka and soda with a lime was his elixir of choice.

“My way of getting rid of it was drinking or partying,” Johnson says. “Yeah, that might work for that day or the next week, but eventually everything keeps piling up.”

Johnson tells SI he got rid of the enablers of his bad behavior, save for his fiancee, which has simplified and solidifed their relationship. He's also found a new set of hobbies to deal with the soon-to-come stress of trying to truly tap into his potential at 30. The Coastal Carolina product says he's ready for the challenge.

“I don’t think I’ve even scratched the surface,” he says. “And that was a really big part of what I’ve been doing, to help myself reach that potential.”

News sport : Sportsbook installs Jimmie Johnson as 2015 title favorite

Jimmie Johnson is a favorite for the 2015 Sprint Cup Series trophy. We'll wait to continue this post until you pick yourself up off the floor after being utterly flabbergasted.

According to the Bovada sportsbook, Johnson is a 5/1 favorite for the title. He's slightly better than teammate Jeff Gordon and 2014 champion Kevin Harvick, who are both listed at 6/1.

Brad Keselowski, last year's leader in race wins with six, is at 7/1 and his teammate Joey Logano is at 8/1. Dale Earnhardt Jr., who won three times in 2014, is at 10/1 along with Matt Kenseth.

Here's the complete list of Bovada's odds:

• Jimmie Johnson: 5/1

• Jeff Gordon: 6/1

• Kevin Harvick: 6/1

• Brad Keselowski: 7/1

• Joey Logano: 8/1

• Dale Earnhardt Jr.: 10/1

• Matt Kenseth: 10/1

• Kyle Busch: 12/1

• Carl Edwards: 12/1

• Denny Hamlin: 14/1

• Kyle Larson: 18/1

• Tony Stewart: 22/1

• Kurt Busch: 25/1

• Kasey Kahne: 25/1

• Ryan Newman: 33/1

• Greg Biffle: 40/1

• Clint Bowyer: 40/1

• Jamie McMurray: 40/1

• Austin Dillon: 50/1

• Brian Vickers: 100/1

• A.J. Allmendinger: 200/1

What stands out to you? Denny Hamlin is the lowest member of Joe Gibbs Racing at 14/1, which is good for 10th in the rankings. Yes, all four JGR drivers are in the top 10, which further solidifies the belief that the team has the best four-driver lineup in the Cup Series. And we think you could order the JGR drivers from 1-4 in any order and make a solid case for your argument.

• Kyle Larson looks a little high to us at 18/1. Yes, his performance and potential is a big part of that, but we're not sure he's necessarily a stronger threat to the title than Tony Stewart, Kurt Busch and others. He will definitely be in a couple of years, however.

• Ryan Newman at 33/1 seems right, though we're positive that someone will repeat what he did in 2014 and get deep into the Chase.

• Aric Almirola is the only Chase driver from 2014 not on the list and the top Roush driver at 40/1 is a sign of just how far Roush has fallen. The days of having half of the Chase field seem like a distant memory.

News sport : Penn State AD apologizes for tweet about hockey helmet '409' decals

Penn State's athletic director apologized for her weekend tweet about the Penn State hockey team's decision to wear "409" decals on helmets in the wake of the NCAA announcement about the football team's restored wins.

As part of a proposed settlement announced Friday, the NCAA agreed to restore the vacated wins as part of the Sandusky scandal punishments. The wins again officially give former coach Joe Paterno 409 wins and make him the winningest coach in FBS history.

Athletic director Sandy Barbour called the tribute "inappropriate and insensitive" in a Twitter reply to an inquiry about it. (Hat tip to Penn Live)

On Monday, she apologized on WBLF radio in State College. Via Penn Live:

"First of all, I want to apologize for the tweet," Barbour told hosts Jerry Fisher, Travis Johnson, Tim Owen, and Jacob Kaucher. "This is far too important a subject to vet on a casual; or in social media. I'll use my own words. It was inappropriate and insensitive of me to do that from a tweet standpoint."

Barbour is in her first year as the Nittany Lions' athletic director. The stickers were worn for Penn State hockey's Friday night game only.

"But from the standpoint of my concern, and why I've had conversations with our coaches about this, is because this is a moment to celebrate, and I knew before I came to Penn State [from California] that 409 meant success with honor, that 409 means far more to this community and this university then wins," Barbour said.

"But, having come from the outside, I know that's not necessarily what everyone else knows and thinks, and frankly, in my five months here, I have learned so much more about Penn State and what an incredible place it is. I want the rest of the world to see and feel the things I have seen, and I thought it was incredibly important in this moment that we pause to make sure we got it right."

While the number of now-official-again wins have gotten the majority of attention in the wake of the settlement announcement, they aren't the only development. As part of the proposal, the $60 million fine that Penn State was assessed as part of the punishment will go to child sexual abuse prevention programs and treatment for those affected by child sexual abuse.

News sport : There's a petition for Oregon to retire Marcus Mariota's number

Oregon football has never retired a number. Some fans want the Ducks to break the trend and have Marcus Mariota's No. 8 retired.

A petition in iPetition.com has already surpassed its goal of 1,000 signatures after being posted last week. The petition says Mariota "has selflessly brought so much to the school and has held a special place in the household of all Ducks fans. Let us honor him and his legend by retiring his number."

As we all know, just because the petition has met its modest goal, htere's nothing mandating that Oregon listen to it. However, we're not going to argue that Mariota would be a worthy candidate if Oregon decided to retire his number.

He's the first Heisman Trophy winner in school history and won 36 games as a starting quarterback. While Oregon ultimately fell short in the national title game against Ohio State, he became the first Pac-12 player to accumulate more than 5.000 yards of total offense in a season in the loss.

Mariota declared for the NFL draft last week and is vying with Florida State's Jameis Winston to be the first quarterback taken.

Bafana lack killer instinct

The mental scars from last night’s Africa Cup of Nations defeat to Algeria were still fresh on the psyche of Bafana Bafana this morning.

|||

Mongomo –The mental scars from last night’s Africa Cup of Nations defeat to Algeria were still fresh on the psyche of Bafana Bafana this morning.

As the players left the Estadio de Mongomo you could see the disappointment on their faces. Even the eternally cheerful captain Dean Furman couldn’t hide the sick feeling in his stomach, as this Bafana side threw away a historic victory and three crucial tournament points.

The Desert Foxes, the current top-ranked team in Africa and one of the few sides to run the eventual champions Germany close at last year’s World Cup, were made to look extremely ordinary.

For about 10 minutes either side of halftime they were swept aside by the pace and the guile of Bafana.

However, the finishing disease, that has plagued South African football for the better part of a decade, reared its ugly head again at the most inappropriate time. It again proved to be Bafana’s Achilles heel, and their lack of a killer instinct in front of goal has put the team on the back foot for the rest of the group stage.

They essentially have to beat both Senegal (Friday) and Ghana (next Tuesday) to reach the quarter-final stage of the tournament.

Last night Bafana were possibly a penalty kick away from pulling off the first major upset of the tournament. But after Tokelo Rantie’s spot kick rattled the crossbar, things went pear-shaped for Bafana.

Thuso Phala had given South Africa the lead after a sweeping move that ended in a trifecta of one-touch passes before the ball found the back of the Algerian net. Another high-paced attack a few minutes later earned Bafana a penalty. The momentum was clearly on their side. Now Rantie just had to perform the last rights and bury his penalty.

Sadly for South Africa he missed. And what followed was a scintillating comeback by the tournament favourites. After being rubbish for the better part of an hour, they suddenly woke up from their slumber and found a higher gear, a gear only championship contenders seem to find when the chips are down.

They wiped away the lead with a freak own goal by the courageous Thulani Hlatshwayo, which knocked Bafana between the eyes. And through the tears, South Africa didn’t see the two knockout blows that followed soon afterwards.

Mashaba has three days to try and lift his team ahead of their meeting with the physical Senegalese, who started off their tournament with a 2-1 stoppage-time win over Ghana. But the coach, who lost his first game in charge of his third tenure with the national team, is confident they can bounce back.

“We still have a long way to go and I thought the boys did well. But unfortunately you are judged by the result of the game,” Mashaba said.

“We need to lift the guys, motivate and talk to them and bring them back to their peak.

“We won’t have a lot of talk about the defeat. We are just going to remind the players of the do’s and don’ts of the game. If you look what happened, we should have killed this team.”

Indeed, and Mashaba singled out Rantie’s penalty miss as the turning point in the match.

The English-based striker copped a lot of flack on Twitter last night because of that error. But he was actually outstanding alongside the likes of midfielders Andile Jali, Sibusiso Vilakazi and Oupa Manyisa, as well as the flying left back Thabo Matlaba.

On another day that penalty would have sneaked under the bar. But unfortunately it proved to be the defining moment in the match.

“Let me start off by saying the best team lost on the day,” Mashaba said.

“We created a lot of chances in the first half. But after we missed that penalty everything went awry.

“I must say Algeria were lucky to come back. I think we had lost focus when they came back and scored those goals,” Mashaba added.

Meanwhile, 18-year-old Rivaldo Coetzee’s tournament may be over after coming off in the 29th minute with a knee injury.

The Ajax Cape Town central defender was treated for the same ailment before the competition.

“I doubt that he will take further part in this tournament. He was limping badly. Unless our medical staff can sort him out, for now I have ruled him out,” Mashaba said.

Eric Mathoho, who was suspended for last night’s match, will come straight into the team on Friday. - The Star

Defensive trio must shape up - Neville

Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville admitted he is still waiting for the ‘penny to drop’ with under-pressure defenders Phil Jones, Jonny Evans and Chris Smalling.

Neville, who remains a passionate United fan despite his new career as England assistant manager and TV analyst for Sky Sports, has revealed he sometimes struggles to keep the level of emotion he feels for his old club out of some of his commentaries.

The former Old Trafford star has claimed United’s defensive issues this season have largely been due to injury problems — but has also stressed that United’s three central defenders have work to do if they are to develop into proper players at the very highest level.

Neville said: ‘When you’re with England and you work with the likes of Smalling or Jones, you hope a manager comes in and grabs them, plays them, trusts and puts belief in them.

‘Louis van Gaal has come in — a great coach and someone who has worked all over Europe. He’ll get them good on the ball, good defensively, in good positions to receive the ball, opening their body out and passing forward with composure. With Smalling, Jones and Evans we still have great hopes for that penny to drop.

‘They’re still developing and picking up injuries but when they stop and the penny drops, you think: “We’ve lived with his faults, development and now we’re getting the benefit of it.”

‘There is no doubt they have talent but they need experience, maturity and injuries to stay clear — and they will fly,’ said Neville, in a wide-ranging interview with the Stretty News fanzine and website.

Jones is only 22 but Smalling is 25 and Evans, 27, which makes some wonder how long Van Gaal will have to wait for them to reach the potential Neville talks about. He added: ‘I look at United’s defence and what it lacks is control. I see players that have talent but they’re all individually working, not having controlled movements together. That comes through understanding and from playing together.

‘No manager, whether it’s Sir Alex Ferguson or someone else, over the past three years, would be able to put a consistent defence out there.

‘The reason Chelsea have the best back four in the league is because they have good players, who play every week without many injuries.

‘United have been absolutely blitzed with injuries in those positions for the last three years. But, in Van Gaal’s defence, he has had Darren Fletcher and Michael Carrick in defence, with Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young as wing backs. If you said last season Van Gaal’s going to come in and Young is going to be a left back, you’d laugh your head off but he’s been fantastic.’

Asked for his three favourite current United players, Neville mentions Wayne Rooney and Angel di Maria but is unstinting in his praise of Carrick.

‘I love Carrick,’ he said. ‘I have respect for Carrick. You never hear anyone that’s played with Carrick at United have a bad word to say about him.

‘I think he would be first or second on Van Gaal’s team sheet. When you play with Carrick, there is authority, control, peace. Against Liverpool or Manchester City, you need peace around you.

‘You sometimes don’t want people running around like blue-arse flies.

‘Scholes and Carrick together was peaceful. It was like going to a bar and hearing a piano playing. It’s relaxing. Listening to some rock is good and you like that too but sometimes it’s nice to listen to a piano. Carrick’s a piano.’ – Daily Mail
