News sport : Rory McIlroy makes first pro ace at Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship

Rory McIlroy is a Masters away from the career Grand Slam, has been on three winning Ryder Cup teams and has been No. 1 in the world several times. However, McIlroy never enjoyed a hole-in-one in a professional event -- that is, until Friday.

At the par-3 15th hole at Abu Dhabi G.C., McIlroy made his first pro ace in the second round of the European Tour's Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship. The world No. 1 used a 9-iron -- a 9-iron! -- to sink the tee shot.

The ace jumped McIlroy from 8 under to 10 under for the tournament, behind clubhouse leader Martin Kaymer, whose 13-under start tied his 36-hole tournament record and improves his career scoring average in this event to just above 68.

It's the second ace on the 15th in as many days, as Miguel Angel Jimenez sank his eighth European Tour ace there on Thursday. Englishman Tom Lewis had a hole-in-one on the club's seventh hole on Thursday to win a Cadillac Escalade.

Debuchy is ‘destroyed’ - Wenger

Arsene Wenger says Arsenal's Mathieu Debuchy is “destroyed” and “embarrassed” after his injury-plagued first season at the club.

|||

London - Arsenal's Mathieu Debuchy is “destroyed” and “embarrassed” after his injury-plagued first season at the London club suffered another setback, his manager Arsene Wenger said on Friday.

The France fullback, who has started less than half Arsenal's Premier League games since joining from Newcastle United, has been ruled out until April after shoulder surgery following last Sunday's victory over Stoke City.

“He is destroyed,” Wenger told reporters. “He is such a keen player, so professional and so willing. “It is his first year here and of course he is embarrassed. But it is not his fault.”

Wenger expressed his frustration that Debuchy's injury was caused by an unnecessary shove into the advertising hoardings by Stoke's Marko Arnautovic.

“The push was not needed,” the manager added.

“Arnautovic did not have a chance to get the ball - I don't think it was malicious but he had no chance to get the ball so I'm saying it was not needed.

“It's not obvious what his intention was, I don't think he wanted to hurt him.”

Wenger delivered brighter news for fans with a better prognosis for injured midfielder Mikel Arteta, who could be sidelined for six weeks rather than three months as previously suggested.

He also confirmed that Polish defensive midfielder Krystian Bielik was due to undergo a medical and a fee had been agreed with his club Legia Warsaw.

Arsenal visit champions Manchester City on Sunday with their top-four credentials under scrutiny.

A mixed start to the season has ended realistic hopes of claiming the title and left them outside the Champions League qualification spots after 21 games.

Defeat on Sunday would leave Wenger again facing questions about his stewardship of the club among an increasingly dissatisfied fanbase.

A fillip for those disgruntled supporters, however, has been the form of forward Alexis Sanchez, whose 12 league goals have kept them in the hunt for a top-four spot.

Sanchez was hailed by City manager and fellow Chilean Manuel Pellegrini this week as the best player in England at the moment, above his own leading light Sergio Aguero.

“It's a great compliment because Pellegrini knows football well,” Wenger said.

“I agree with him - at the moment Sanchez is one of the top performers in the league.” – Reuters

Ginola launches unlikely Fifa bid

Former France international David Ginola launched an unlikely and almost certainly doomed bid for the Fifa presidency.

|||

London - Former France international David Ginola launched an unlikely and almost certainly doomed bid for the Fifa presidency, assuming the role of the “fans champion” under the slogan of “rebooting football.”

Ginola, 48, who has until January 29 to prove he has the backing of five football associations before his bid can be officially accepted by Fifa, is seeking the support of fans around the world to help get him on the ballot and to ultimately mount a successful election campaign.

Launching “Team Ginola”, the former Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur and Everton player, 48 later this month, told reporters: “I am putting my name forward as a candidate for the Presidency of Fifa and am seeking the support from fans all over the world and from their football associations to make this happen.

“I believe that I have the credentials and capability to be a strong candidate, a candidate of football fans and lovers of the game from the four corners of the world. The people who follow football should have a voice and a cause. My voice is theirs. My cause is theirs.”

Ginola's stance might resonate with many in the wake of continual and widespread disillusionment with Fifa but it appears to be more a voice in the wind than a credible bid to run against incumbent president Sepp Blatter, standing for a fifth term, former Fifa official and another Frenchman Jerome Champagne and Prince Ali bin Al-Hussein of Jordan

The campaign, backed by a notoriously publicity-hungry bookmaker in association with the Change Fifa organisation needs to raise 2.3 million pounds ($3.50 million) for a “comprehensive global marketing and communications campaign” over the coming months.

To raise the money, “Team Ginola” has initiated a crowd funding programme, asking fans around the world to contribute.

Before he can stand officially, though, he needs the five declarations to set him on course for the Fifa Presidential vote on May 29.

He also needs to prove he has had an active role in football for at least two of the last five years, though he believes that his role at French third tier side L'Etoile Frejus St Raphael means he meets that criteria. – Reuters

News sport : White Sox to retire Paul Konerko's No. 14 on May 23

(Getty Images) Considering the man already has a statue, retiring Paul Konerko's jersey number was the obvious next step for the White Sox to take to honor their longtime slugger.

The date of the ceremony to retire Konerko's No. 14 has been set for May 23, when Chicago hosts the Twins.

"Paul Konerko is one of the greatest players in White Sox history, not only for his strength and performance on the field, but also for his heart and leadership off the field," White Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf said in a statement. "Paul was a humble leader whose passion for the game earned the respect and love of the entire clubhouse and fans all over the country. We honor Paul by retiring his number and welcoming him to the ranks of White Sox legends."

The first 20,000 fans through the turnstiles at U.S. Cellular Field on that Saturday afternoon will receive a replica of the Konerko statue that sits on the concourse in left-center field.

Konerko retired following the 2014 season and spent 16 of his 18 years in the big league in Chicago, undoubtedly leaving his mark on the franchise and its record books. He is first in total bases (4,010), second in home runs (432) behind Frank Thomas, and third in hits (2,292) behind Luke Appling and Nellie Fox. He also led the White Sox to a World Series title in 2005, their first championship since 1917, and that's when he delivered the signature moment of his career, hitting a grand slam home run in Game 2.

Konerko joins Thomas, Appling, Fox, Harold Baines, Minnie Minoso, Luis Aparicio, Ted Lyons, Billy Pierce, and Carlton Fisk as players that have had their numbers retired by the White Sox.

Sturridge close to Liverpool return

England striker Daniel Sturridge, who has not played since the end of August, is back in training and could return to the Liverpool side soon.

|||

London - England striker Daniel Sturridge, who has not played since the end of August, is back in training and could return to the Liverpool side soon, manager Brendan Rodgers said on Thursday.

Midfielder Adam Lallana is recovering quicker than expected from a calf injury and full back Glen Johnson is also nearing full fitness as Liverpool seek to maintain their recent improvement when they visit Aston Villa in the Premier League on Saturday.

Sturridge, who scored 25 goals for Liverpool in all competitions last season, grabbed the winner in a 2-1 win over Southampton on the opening day of the season, but only played twice more before sustaining the first of a series of injuries.

The latest was a thigh problem which required rehabilitation in the United States.

“He's obviously not ready to play as of yet, but he's working well, so hopefully in the near future he'll be ready,” Rodgers told reporters.

“We just want him fit and there's no timeline on that as such.”

Johnson, who has missed the last seven matches with a groin injury, is back in full training and could be fit to face Villa.

Lallana injured his calf in the 2-2 draw with Leicester City on New Year's Day.

“He's ahead of schedule in terms of his rehabilitation,” Rodgers said. “We're hoping he can join the group tomorrow to train.

“If he's not available for the weekend, then he certainly will be for Chelsea.

“He's a wonderful technician. He's linked up with players when he's played and he will only get better as his time progresses here at the club.”

Liverpool face Chelsea in a two-legged Capital One (League) semi-final on January 20 and January 27.

They are unbeaten in their last seven matches since a 3-0 defeat at Manchester United and are eighth in the standings, five points off the Champions League places. – Reuters

Torres nets twice against Real

Fernando Torres scored twice as Atletico Madrid ended Real Madrid's defence of the Copa del Rey title with a 2-2 draw.

|||

Barcelona, Spain – Fernando Torres scored twice as Atletico Madrid ended Real Madrid's defence of the Copa del Rey title with a 2-2 draw, maintaining their dominance over its crosstown rival this season.

Atletico advanced 4-2 on aggregate and will play Barcelona in the quarterfinals after it won 4-0 at Elche to move on 9-0 over both legs.

Torres stunned the Santiago Bernabeu by striking from Antoine Griezmann's pass seconds into the Spanish capital derby.

Sergio Ramos made it 1-1 soon after, but Atletico hung on in its area until Griezmann set up Torres for his second goal just after the halftime restart.

Cristiano Ronaldo leveled the score again in an otherwise subdued night he began by parading his Ballon d'Or trophy, leaving Real needing three more goals in 36 minutes to advance.

“Scoring so early set us on our way,” Torres said. “I'm happy for our fans who have come, and for scoring my first two goals in my return at a ground I had never scored at.”

Since losing last season's Champions League final to Real, the team managed by Diego Simeone has beaten its main rivals in the Spanish Super Cup, the league, and the Copa del Rey. It improved its record against Real to four wins, three draws, and three losses since it broke a 14-year, 25-match winless streak with a victory in the 2013 Copa del Rey final.

“We have eliminated the best team in the world,” Simeone said.

Madrid continued to sputter with only one win in its last four matches since finishing 2014 on a Spanish record 22-win streak.

“Losing is never good, but you always have to be positive,” said Ronaldo. “The team is going to improve and we are alive in the Spanish league and the Champions League. Real is the biggest club in the world and always wants to win, although sometimes you have to take a step backward to later take two forward.”

Hyped for a comeback, the Real faithful greeted Atletico's bus with a sea of raucous supporters that Spanish police had to part with officers on horseback.

The atmosphere inside was equally charged, but Atletico needed only 50 seconds to silence the crowd, except for its red-and-white contingent which exploded in rapture when Torres got his first goal in three games since returning to his boyhood club.

Siqueira intercepted Ramos' long ball, and three quick passes launched Griezmann on the break. He flew by Pepe and put his cross past Ramos for Torres to score a left-footed volley.

Real now needed four goals to go through, and it found its first in the 20th when Torres fouled Ronaldo, setting up Toni Kroos' free kick that Ramos headed in after goalkeeper Jan Oblak fell.

The hosts continued to bombard Atletico's area with crosses and long-range shots, as the defending league champions dug in until halftime.

The second half started with another erred pass by Ramos that Griezmann latched onto before dribbling into the box and laying off for Torres, who cut back to bring Pepe to his knees before squeezing the ball under goalie Keylor Navas to crush Real's hopes.

Ronaldo got his goal when he slipped around Diego Godin to nod in Gareth Bale's short cross.

Atletico, however, was in control the rest of the way, with Jorge “Koke” Resurreccion and substitute Arda Turan keeping possession as Real faded.

Barcelona left Lionel Messi and most of its first-choice players off the squad with the tie already in hand. And it didn't miss them as it eased past Elche with first-half goals by Jeremy Mathieu, Sergi Roberto and Pedro Rodriguez before Adriano netted in injury time. – Sapa-AP

Injury curse strikes Arsenal

Arsenal captain Mikel Arteta and defender Mathieu Debuchy have been ruled out for the next three months following surgery on ankle and shoulder injuries.

|||

London - Arsenal captain Mikel Arteta will be out for the next three months after having a “successful” operation on the left ankle that has kept him sidelined since late November, the club said on Thursday.

Arsenal will also be without France international defender Mathieu Debuchy until April following surgery on the shoulder he injured against Stoke City last weekend.

Spanish midfielder Arteta had a bony spur removed and in a statement on their website (www.arsenal.com), Arsenal said: “The procedure went well and Mikel will now begin a period of rehabilitation which is expected to last approximately three months.”

Manager Arsene Wenger added: “Mikel has had surgery which went well.

“He had limited mobility in his ankle and some persistent inflammation that had an impact on his calf.

“That meant we had to make the decision to have surgery and it's a proper solution which gives him the best chance to recover.”

He has not played since being substituted in the 67th minute of Arsenal's 2-0 win over Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League at the Emirates Stadium on Nov.26.

Wenger added that 29-year-old Debuchy had surgery on his right shoulder following his injury.

“It's very unfortunate for Mathieu, it's unbelievable because he's had two surgeries in the same season.

“He just came back, he played seven games and he's out again. I count three months out for Mathieu because contact will be a problem for the shoulder.”

Debuchy started Arsenal's first seven matches of the season including the Community Shield win over Manchester City at Wembley and then missed the next three months after damaging his ankle against City on Sept.13.

He returned to the side for the Champions League match against Galatasaray on Dec.9 and retained his place in the starting line-up before his latest setback which came after a collision with Stoke's Marko Arnautovic sent him crashing into the advertising boards. – Reuters

News sport : Rockies owner on Troy Tulowitzki to Mets: 'It’s not happening'

(Getty Images) Mets fans hoping to see Troy Tulowitzki in blue and orange next season won't want to hear this.

Rockies co-owner Charlie Monfort told the New York Post on Thursday at MLB's owners meeting there's no chance Colorado is trading Tulowitzki to New York:

"It’s not happening. I can’t speak for him, but yeah, we want him. I think he’s strong and he’s worked hard and he’ll be back. He’ll be Tulo of old."

Earlier this offseason the Rockies indicated they were open to moving their All-Star shortstop, but the asking price has been exceedingly high.

There's a reason for that. When healthy there's no shortstop in the game today that can match Tulowitzki's production at the plate and in the field.

However, health has been an issue throughout his career. Last season Tulowitzki hit an absurd .340/.432/.603 but was limited to 91 games because of a left hip injury. He underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum in August and is expected to be ready for spring training workouts.

Besides the injury risk, there's another reason teams haven't been willing to give the Rockies what they want for Tulowitzki. He's now 30, he's still owed $118 million over the next six seasons, and according to the Post, Colorado isn't planning on picking up any of that money if they do trade him.

Tulowitzki hasn't been afraid to criticize the organization, making the relationship between star and team a little more contentious of late. It's not a perfect situation but it appears both sides will have to make it work, at least for the time being,

With Tulowitzki seemingly out of the picture, the Mets will turn their attention elsewhere. Wilmer Flores is currently set to be the starter at shortstop but New York continues to search for a possible upgrade. Ian Desmond of the Nationals is reportedly a target while free agent Everth Cabrera, who was let go by the Padres in December, could be a buy-low candidate.

News sport : Report: Alex Rodriguez thinks he'll be Yankees' third baseman

(Getty Images)

It's been over 16 months since Alex Rodriguez started a professional baseball game at third base. And despite the time away serving his yearlong suspension for PED use last season and the multiple hip surgeries limiting his mobility, he reportedly sees himself as the frontrunner for the starting job at the hot corner with the Yankees in 2015.

The fact New York signed Chase Headley to a four-year, $52 million deal this offseason hasn't changed his thinking. An anonymous source close to Rodriguez told Newsday that A-Rod believes he'll be at third base for the Yankees come opening day:

"Alex's mind is that job's not Headley's, it's Alex's to lose. That's what he thinks. Alex is going into training camp thinking that he is the starting third baseman, that if there's a competition, Headley's got to win it from him."

For what it's worth, Rodriguez wasn't quite as boastful in a recent conversation with the New York Post:

"I’m ready to go. I’m feeling really, really good. I am so excited for spring training and to be back with my teammates."

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman has repeatedly stated that third base will be Headley's position next season. Sure, Rodriguez might get the occasional start at third when Headley needs some rest, but it's difficult to believe the soon to be 40-year-old can handle that kind of physical grind on an everyday basis. It's safe to say A-Rod will get more at-bats at DH and even first base than at his old spot across the diamond.

Spring training is still over a month away and trust us, these Alex Rodriguez stories are just getting started.

News sport : Nick Bonino spins around Michael Del Zotto for pretty goal (Video)

Michael Del Zotto is not what you’d call a shutdown defenseman. He’s pretty good in the offensive zone, but in his own end, well, his play leaves much to be desired — just ask New York Rangers fans.

Midway through the first period of Thursday’s game between Del Zotto’s Philadelphia Flyers and Vancouver Canucks, Nick Bonino scored a highlight-reel goal at the defenseman’s expense:

Bonino-rama!

To be fair, we can’t put the entire breakdown on Del Zotto. Bonino’s on a one-on-two and somehow is barely threatened by the Flyers' defense or a backchecking Brayden Schenn. And because of that the Canucks took a 1-0 lead on a pretty goal.

The goal was only Bonino's third since Nov. 6, but hopefully a good sign for the Canucks that his offense is waking up.

News sport : Cardale Jones' teammates had fun with him on Twitter, asking for rent money and comparing him to LeBron

While the college football world waited for quarterback Cardale Jones to make a much-anticipated decision on his future — he ultimately decided to stay at Ohio State rather than pursue a career in the NFL — his teammates were having a little fun at his expense on Twitter.

Roommate Tyvis Powell didn’t care what Jones was planning do with his future so long as he didn’t get stuck paying all the rent.

Powell also was a little upset that he didn’t know which way Jones was leaning prior to the announcement.

Linebacker Darron Lee also got in on the fun by teasing Jones about the way he was announcing his decision.

Following Jones’ decision to stay in school, both teammates took to Twitter to offer their congratulations.

How could Jones have possibly thought of leaving these guys early?

News sport : Ohio State QB Cardale Jones is staying in school

Ohio State's Cardale Jones holds the championship trophy after the NCAA college football playoff championship game against Oregon Monday, Jan. 12, 2015, in Arlington, Texas. Ohio State won 42-20. (AP Photo/David J. Phillip) Ohio State quarterback Cardale Jones announced Thursday that he’s staying at Ohio State for another season citing his desire to graduate.

“It’s everybody’s dream when they play a collegiate sport to make it to the next level,” Jones said. “At my point in my career, I feel like it’s best for me to go back to school and one of the most important things for me is to graduate. So, when I make that decision to play in the NFL, I want to be done with school. I want to devote all my time and all my effort into the film room and getting better at the quarterback position.

“The NFL, after three games, was really out of the question for me.”

Jones’ meteoric rise has been unprecedented.

He spent the past two seasons as the third string quarterback, but found himself on the field after injuries to starters Braxton Miller and J.T. Barrett forced him into action.

And Jones made the most of his opportunities.

He led Ohio State to a Big Ten Championship win against Wisconsin, a College Football Playoff Semifinal win against Alabama and a 42-20 national championship win against Oregon earlier this week.

During that three-game span as a starter, Jones completed 46 of 75 passes for 742 yards and five touchdowns and two interceptions.

"Cardale's brand right now has never been stronger, might never be stronger again in his life," Ohio State coach Urban Meyer said on Tuesday.

Jones said Tuesday he didn’t think he was ready for the NFL after just three starts, but his prospects of getting on the field for the Buckeyes in 2015 are slim. Miller, who is expected to be back from his shoulder injury, was the Heisman favorite heading into the 2014 season before his injury. Barrett, who will spend the spring rehabbing the broken ankle he suffered in the Buckeyes final regular season game, finished fifth in Heisman voting this year.

However, Jones said he’s eager to compete for the starting role and that if he doesn’t win it, he said he’ll be ready for his next opportunity. Currently, it's unclear whether Miller will return to the Buckeyes. He's already graduated and could tranfer and play for another program next season.

Jones, who is 6-foot-5, 250 pounds, showed amazing arm strength during his three starts and remarked while meeting with the media during national championship week that he could throw the ball 80-85 yards. He also showed tremendous speed, agility and power for his size. He rushed for 81 yards against Alabama and Oregon and several of those yards came after initial contact.

While NFL scouts didn’t have a lot of film on Jones, some pundits though he could be a first-round pick.

“I thought it all through, but chances are slim,” Jones said of actually being taking in the first round. “Football has been a stepping stone for my education. So being a first-round draft pick means nothing to me without my education.”

News sport : NFL announces inaugural veteran combine

Vince Papale better dust off those cleats.

The former Philadelphia Eagles walk-on made famous by the Mark Wahlberg vehicle "Invincible" and any other veteran free agent are welcome to apply for participation in the inaugural NFL Veteran Combine at the Arizona Cardinals' practice facility on March 22, according to the league's website.

According to a memo obtained by NFL.com's Ian Rappaport, 100 applicants will be invited to take part in drills, testing and timing for representatives of all 32 teams. Previously, veteran free agents took part in regional rookie combines or worked out for individual teams for an opportunity to reenter the league.

While we can probably rule out Papale, who is approaching his 69th birthday, the veteran combine gives a second chance to players young and old who couldn't stick with a team, played their way out of the league or fell through the cracks. Or have the name Terrell Owens. All are welcome to apply, although the league is limiting the number of spots so as not to create a circus on the eve of the annual owners' meeting.

"There's a void there," NFL director of football development Matt Birk told the Associated Press. "There was nothing for that guy out there who has one or two or three years in the league and is not with a team and is at the mercy of when the phone rings or when his agent gets him a workout. This will be a forum for these guys to showcase their talents and a service for our clubs instead of (what had been) an inefficient process."

As with any big corporation's bright idea, it's a wonder nobody thought of this before.

News sport : Paul George is now dunking at Indiana Pacers' practice (Video)

Paul George is not going to return to the Indiana Pacers this season. The two-time All-Star broke his right leg during a shoe-selling Team USA exhibition last August, the Pacers applied for and received an injured player exception soon after. Despite some initial encouraging signs the time frame just isn’t right for him to come back to a Pacer team that is currently 10 games out of .500 and a game and a half out of a playoff bracket that Indiana’s front office probably don’t want to leap into.

Yet, in the cold of the Midwestern winter, there is this to behold:

Yes, that’s Paul George, some five months after his awful accident, dunking a basketball. George is 6-9, and blessed with superior hops to pair with his long arms, but one shouldn’t slough this off. This is still significant.

Even if George is at one hundred percent health to start 2015-16, it was still assumed that he’ll eventually need months to return to form during that term – and many think he’ll never regain the athletic attributes that made him so formidable in the past, as sadly has been the case with journeyman guard Shaun Livingston. Livingston is as respected as they come in NBA circles, but a 2007 injury along the lines of George’s wiped out many of the devastating athletic abilities that made him such an intriguing player to watch.

A dunk at practice isn’t just “normal basketball activity,” it ranks as activity that not many basketball players can do. Paul George may not be returning in 2014-15, but for him to be throwing down at the midpoint of a season he was slated to entirely miss out on is more than encouraging. To say the absolute least.
