News sport : 2014 Driver Reviews: No. 3 Denny Hamlin

After doing exit interviews for Sprint Cup Series drivers in 2013, we're turning the tables. We want the drivers to sell themselves. So here are the resumés for all full-time Sprint Cup Series drivers in 2014. Then, at the end, we'll provide a summation of the driver's season in 150 words or less.

Name: Denny Hamlin

NASCAR Experience: Nine full seasons in the Sprint Cup Series. 24 wins.

Most recent team: Joe Gibbs Racing

Most recent season finish: 3rd

2014 accomplishments: One win, seven top fives and 18-top 10s. Made the final four of the Chase with an average finish of 12.4 through the first nine races of the season.

Most memorable moment: Talladega in the spring, win No. 24 and points-paying restrictor plate win No. 1.

Strengths: Has now won on every type of track save a road course. Has learned from previous championship nervousness.

2015 goals: Win the title and hope that there's no dropoff at JGR as the team expands to four cars.

FTM's Take: Hamlin was the perfect example of a driver peaking at the right time in 2014. The first driver to get an exemption from NASCAR to make the Chase despite missing a race, Hamlin was much faster at the end of the year than he was at the beginning, even though his win came in May.

And now he'll be chasing after a championship with his third crew chief. Darian Grubb is moving to Carl Edwards and Hamlin will work with Dave Rogers, who was Kyle Busch's crew chief.

Hamlin had five wins in his first season with Grubb. We can't rule that out with Rogers this year, especially if the Toyotas have the speed they didn't have last year. Hamlin will once again make the Chase and we're going to go out on a limb and say that if he makes the Homestead race again in 2015, he'll do so with a different strategy than simply surviving and advancing.

Previous reviews: No. 4 Joey Logano, No. 5 Brad Keselowski, No. 6 Jeff Gordon, No. 7 Matt Kenseth, No. 8 Dale Earnhardt Jr., No. 9 Carl Edwards, No. 10 Kyle Busch, No. 11 Jimmie Johnson, No. 12 Kurt Busch, No. 13 AJ Allmendinger, No. 14 Greg Biffle, No. 15 Kasey Kahne, No. 16 Aric Almirola, No. 17 Kyle Larson, No. 18, Jamie McMurray, No. 19 Clint Bowyer, No. 20, Austin Dillon, No. 21 Paul Menard, No. 22 Brian Vickers, No. 23 Marcos Ambrose, No. 24 Martin Truex Jr., No. 25 Tony Stewart, No. 26 Casey Mears, No. 27 Ricky Stenhouse Jr., No. 28, Danica Patrick, No. 29, Justin Allgaier, No. 30, David Gilliland, No. 31 Cole Whitt, No. 32 David Ragan, No. 33 Michael Annett, No. 34 Reed Sorenson, No. 35 Alex Bowman

News sport : Colorado lineman suspended indefinitely after sexual assault allegation

Colorado offensive lineman Isaiah Holland is suspended indefinitely from the team and not enrolled at the university after an allegation of sexual assault.

A spokesperson for the university declined to specify to the Boulder Daily Camera how long Holland had not been enrolled citing student privacy rules. Holland is facing four felony charges from the incident.

The alleged incident happened on October 24, when Holland entered a woman's dorm room. The woman told him to leave three or four times and he eventually complied. She said she went to sleep a short time after he departed. However, it does not end there.

From the Daily Camera:

At an unknown time later that night, the woman told police, she "woke up ... to the feeling of breath on her face and neck, and she could feel the sensation of someone next to her."

Holland is accused of proceeding to grope the woman inappropriately, as she pretended to be asleep, "hoping that the touching would stop and that (Holland) would go away."

The woman told police Holland eventually left, after an undetermined amount of time in the room, and that she reported the incident to her resident advisors. A CU officer contacted Holland in his dorm room at 4:37 a.m., placed him under arrest and transported him to the Boulder County Jail.

Per the Daily Camera, felony charges are sexual assault of an at-risk victim, sexual contact with an at-risk victim and two counts of second-degree burglary. "At-risk" means the alleged victim has a physical disability.

Holland, a freshman, was a two-star recruit according to Rivals from Valor Christian High School in Colorado.

Johnson seeks PSL return

Former SuperSport United coach Cavin Johnson has set his sights on returning to the Premier Soccer League.

|||

Pretoria – Former SuperSport United coach Cavin Johnson has set his sights on returning to the Premier Soccer League as soon as the season resumes in February.

Johnson has been without a job since he was sacked by SuperSport United at the end of August and replaced by Gordon Igesund.

“I’m hoping that I’m able to get the right club now in order to get back into the swing of things,” Johnson told Sapa on Thursday.

“I need to get on the field again and I need to start as quickly as possible.”

After his heroics with Platinum Stars during the 2012/13 season, in which Stars finished runners-up in the Premiership, Johnson failed to hit the same heights with Matsatsantsa and was fired just six games into the current season, losing five out of the six matches.

Johnson says he had been in contact with a number of clubs enquiring about his services, but poor timing meant he ended 2014

without a job.

“At the end of the year, there were a few offers but because of the timing and everything closing, everybody went quiet again.

“Now with the Africa Cup of Nations, there is a whole month that nobody is doing anything so nobody really knows what’s happening now.”

Johnson could easily have had his pick of jobs at the time, with as many as four Premiership sides without a head coach.

Free State Stars sacked Tom Saintfiet in November shortly after Zeca Marques quit Moroka Swallows the previous month.

The University of Pretoria’s Steve Barker also resigned in November, moving to AmaZulu, before Orlando Pirates’ Vladimir Vermezovic ended his stint with the Soweto giants, less than a year into the job.

Asked whether he would prefer to stay in Gauteng after settling down in the province during his tenure with SuperSport, Johnson said he was happy to go wherever the job takes him.

“It’s not about being in Gauteng. I’m a coach and I’m looking for the right team with the right attitude and mentality.”

Tuks seemed to be the front-runners after Barker’s resignation, but Johnson remained coy on whether or not the Pretoria minnows best suited his criteria. – Sapa

News sport : Carl Pelini reportedly asked about high school coaching job in Iowa

Former Florida Atlantic coach Carl Pelini is apparently considering coaching high school football.

According to the Des Moines Register, Pelini "inquired" about the head coaching position at Des Moines Lincoln High School.

"Anytime you have somebody with that type of name recognition, obviously that's a shock," Lincoln activities director Phil Chia told the paper.

Pelini is not being considered for the position, however, and Chia declined further comment because the search for a new coach isn't complete.

Pelini left Florida Atlantic during the 2013 season as allegations of drug use swirled. Pelini denied the allegations and said they were made by a staff member because Pelini suspected the staff member was in an inappropriate relationship.

A former defensive coach signed an affidavit that he witness Pelini and the Owls' defensive coordinator using drugs. In a press conference after Pelini's resignation, which was then termed a firing, FAU's athletic director said that Pelini had admitted to using drugs. However, the official reason for the firing was because he failed to report the conduct of staff members.

Before becoming FAU's head coach, Pelini was the defensive coordinator at Nebraska under his brother Bo, who is now the Youngstown State coach after his firing from Nebraska after the 2014 season.

City facing Arsenal test

Manchester City host Arsenal to begin an important stretch that could go a long way in determining the Premier League title.

|||

London – Manchester City host Arsenal this weekend to begin an important stretch that could go a long way in determining the Premier League title.

Manchester City begin a two-game stretch this weekend that could go a long way in determining if they retain their Premier League title.

The defending champions host fifth-place Arsenal on Sunday, followed by a January 31 visit to leaders Chelsea.

While City are unbeaten in 12 league matches, an unexpected 2-2 draw with Everton last weekend dropped them two points back of Chelsea.

“We now have Arsenal and Chelsea coming up, but this is the Premier League, you have to play against tough teams and you can't choose when,” City midfielder Fernandinho said. “If you want to fight for the title, you have to play to win these games.

“They are two difficult games, two great teams. We'll see who is in command after these two games. But it can help to win the title.”

Arsenal are in a crowded fight for a top-four finish and a spot in the Champions League. The Gunners are fifth, one point behind Manchester United, but just four points ahead of Liverpool in eighth.

Arsenal have won just one of their last five visits to the blue side of Manchester and suffered a 6-3 defeat last season. That, though, was without Alexis Sanchez, who has shone in his first season at the club by scoring 18 goals.

“He's got the whole package and hopefully it will continue because ultimately that is going to help us,” midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain told Arsenal's website.

Chelsea visit a Swansea side who begin life without Wilfried Bony, after the striker's move to Man City on Wednesday. That's opened the way for Bafetimbi Gomis.

“I've got 100 per cent faith in Bafe,” manager Garry Monk said. “I think the more game time for Bafe he gets, the more used the team will get when we're playing him.”

Southampton hope to continue their fine run of form with a visit to Newcastle. The Saints are unbeaten in five in the league, including a 1-0 win at Manchester United last time out that vaulted them up to third place.

Manchester United go to Queens Park Rangers looking to rebound from their first loss in 11 games. While QPR are next-to-last, they've enjoyed success at home where they've secured all 19 of their points this season.

“This United game is a big one for us,” defender Steven Caulker said on QPR's website. “At home our form in the league has been good and we want to maintain that.

“We know a result against United will have the table looking a lot healthier and set us up much better for going into the back-end of the season.”

In Saturday's other matches, Aston Villa play Liverpool, Burnley host Crystal Palace, Stoke visit Leicester, and Tottenham are at Sunderland. West Ham are home to Hull City on Sunday, while West Brom travel to Everton on Monday. – Sapa-dpa

Sweet victory for captain Jali

Andile Jali said the privilege of captaining Bafana was made even sweeter after the 3-0 victory over Mali.

|||

Johannesburg – Wearing the captain's armband for the first time in his career, Andile Jali said the privilege was made even sweeter after Bafana Bafana enjoyed a 3-0 victory over Mali in Libreville, Gabon, on Wednesday.

“It was a great honour for me to captain my country for the first time ever – in fact to be captain in any match. What makes me happier is that the results were positive,” Jali said.

“It was a huge surprise for me but I said I will don the armband because the coach chose me amongst 23 players in the squad to lead the country.”

The 24-year-old made his 23rd appearance for his country in the final preparation match before the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) tournament starts in Equatorial Guinea on Saturday.

Since the return of head coach Shakes Mashaba in August last year, Jali had played in all the Afcon qualifiers together with Dean Furman.

After the death of Bafana goalkeeper and captain Senzo Meyiwa, Mashaba had so far chosen to rotate the wearing of the captain's armband Ä an idea which Jali said kept the players hungry.

“In this team we are all the same, the only difference is that only one person has the armband but we are all on the same level,” Jali said.

“We are all leaders on the field which makes the job of the captain of the day much easier.

“We are all friends in this team; that is the difference with the Bafana Bafana of then and now. We treat each other in the same way Ä no one is better than the others, just that only 11 can start which makes us all hungry to play.

He said Mashaba was never intimidated by the opposition and had taught the players to believe in their own abilities, regardless of what the other sides had to offer.

The former Orlando Pirates midfielder said his experience in the CAF Champions League had helped him grow and he gained valuable experience playing on the continent.

“The CAF club competition helped most of us a great deal. But even before then some of us were involved in the junior national teams and we gained a lot of experience which we are able to use at senior level.

“Because of that, we know what to expect. The experience of our coaching staff is also vital as they are helping us prepare well.”

Playing for KV Oostende in Belgium, Jali said his role for the national team was less restricted than it was for the Ostend side but he was content to remain there for the time being.

“I am not worried about selling myself in this tournament because I am very happy where I am playing. We are all here to do a job for our country.

“Even though I play the same position in Belgium, I don't move a lot, I never go past the centre. I am a real holding midfielder. But in South Africa I am very mobile with a lot of freedom to even go for goal. I enjoy both systems though. At Bafana Bafana I play the same way I used to play at Orlando Pirates.”

Bafana Bafana were ready for Afcon, Jali said and the warm-up games against Cameroon and Mali would hold them in good stead.

“The way we played against Mali showed that we can hold our own against the big guns. The conditions were difficult out there but we still managed to get a great win and that augurs well for the tournament as we know what to expect.

“I believe Cameroon and Algeria play the same attacking game, so that Cameroon match was a masterstroke for us to play in preparation for our opening match against the North Africans.”

South Africa face Algeria in their opening Afcon game in Mongomo on Monday.

“We are not here to prove a point, just to show that South Africa can also play and has a lot of talent,” Jali said.

“We go there with confidence that we will be successful and we are very positive.” – Sapa

Manyisa set to join Sundowns?

Orlando Pirates skipper Oupa Manyisa is on the verge of joining Mamelodi Sundowns, according to the SABC.

|||

Johannesburg – Orlando Pirates skipper Oupa Manyisa is on the verge of joining Mamelodi Sundowns, according to the SA Broadcasting Commission (SABC).

The national broadcaster said Manyisa's agent had confirmed that the highly sought-after player was at an advanced stage of negotiations and could be linking up with the Brazilians before the resumption of the Premiership season.

“As things stand, Manyisa will join Mamelodi Sundowns before the transfer window closes,” Thabo Moloto told the SABC website.

Moloto said Sundowns' owner Patrice Motsepe had already met with Pirates' chairman Irvin Khoza to finalise the deal, with the transfer fee the only hurdle still left to discuss.

Manyisa, who joined Pirates in 2008, had been linked with a move away from the Buccaneers for several months, with Kaizer Chiefs seemingly favourites to lure the midfield linchpin away from Pirates.

Earlier this week, Chiefs' director of football, Bobby Motaung, dismissed interest from Chiefs and ruled out any deals between the two rival clubs.

Pirates had attempted to hold onto the dribbling maestro by handing Manyisa the captain's armband but he looked set to cash in at big-spending Sundowns, who had earned a reputation over the years of being able to double or sometimes treble a player's salary.

Manyisa was currently away with Bafana Bafana ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations tournament which kicks off in Equatorial Guinea this weekend. – Sapa

Five stars missing at Afcon 2015

Afcon 2015 begins this weekend, some of the biggest names on the continent will be missing for a variety of reasons.

|||

When the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations begins this weekend, some of the biggest names on the continent will be missing for a variety of reasons.

AFP takes a look at five stars who will not grace the tournament in Equatorial Guinea:

- DEMBA BA

Senegal coach Alain Giresse surprised many when he did not even include the prolific Ba in his preliminary squad for the finals. The 29-year-old French-born striker, formerly of Newcastle United and Chelsea, is the leading scorer for Besiktas this season, with his 16 goals in 19 games propelling them into title contention in Turkey and helping them into the knockout stage in the Europa League.

Giresse has plenty of options in attack, with Ba's former Newcastle colleague Papiss Demba Cisse, Mame Biram Diouf of Stoke City, Sadio Mane of Southampton and Fenerbahce's Moussa Sow all included. However, Ba, who played at the 2012 Cup of Nations could scarcely contain his anger when he discovered that he had been dropped.

“I can't wait to hear his excuses and destroy them one by one,” he wrote of Giresse in a Twitter post, before later telling Senegalese media that his coach had cited an ankle problem for leaving him out.

- VINCENT ENYEAMA

Arguably the finest goalkeeper Africa has produced, Enyeama headlines the list of star names who will not feature at this year's tournament because of defending champions Nigeria's surprise failure to qualify.

Enyeama, who was named in the team of the tournament as he helped the Super Eagles win the 2013 Cup of Nations in South Africa, has been playing the best football of his club career over the last 18 months with French side Lille. He also featured at his third World Cup last year, helping Stephen Keshi's side to the last 16 in Brazil. However, the 32-year-old could not prevent Nigeria finishing behind South Africa and Congo Brazzaville in qualifying.

- DIDIER DROGBA

Possibly the best player to come out of the continent in a generation, the 36-year-old Drogba announced his retirement from international football last summer after playing a peripheral role in the Ivory Coast's World Cup campaign.

Drogba bowed out after winning more than 100 caps for the Elephants, although sadly he will be remembered best as part of the country's golden generation which has failed to win a major international trophy. Drogba played at, and scored in, each of the last five Cups of Nations. But he missed penalties in each of their final defeats to Egypt in 2006 and Zambia in 2012. Without him, the Elephants continue their search for a first Africa Cup of Nations since 1992.

- KWADWO ASAMOAH

Part of Ghana sides that have reached the semi-finals of each of the last four tournaments - losing the 2010 final to Egypt - and the quarter-finals at the 2010 World Cup, left-back Asamoah is one of the biggest-name injury absentees from this year's Cup of Nations.

The 26-year-old Juventus star underwent knee surgery late last year that will keep him out until the spring. That is a blow for new Ghana coach Avram Grant, whose side could do with all the help they can get if they are to progress from a group that also contains Algeria, Senegal and South Africa.

- MEHDI BENATIA

Central defender Benatia is one of the highest-profile members of the Morocco squad that had been looking forward to the prospect of competing as hosts until the country asked for a postponement of the tournament over Ebola fears and were then thrown out by the Confederation of African Football.

The 27-year-old French-born player, who played in Morocco sides that were eliminated at the first hurdle in 2012 and 2013, will instead have to focus on his club career. He has so far made just eight Bundesliga appearances since a big-money move from Roma to Bayern Munich late in the transfer window last summer. – AFP

News sport : NHL Three Stars: Habs power play beats CBJ; Holtby shut-out; Perry hat-trick

No. 1 Star: Max Pacioretty, Montreal Canadiens

Coming into the third period, the Habs were down 1-0 to Columbus, and 0-for-4 on the power play. After Ryan Johansen scored to put 'Lumbus up by two, Montreal decided they should do something with special teams opportunities. They went on to score 3-straight power play goals to beat the Jackets 3-2. Pacioretty was credited with 2 of the 3 PPGs.

No. 2 Star: Brayden Holtby, Washington Capitals

Holtby is a new man this season, and the Caps are benefiting from it. The netminder stopped all 21 shots in Washington's defeat of the Philadelphia Flyers.

No. 3 Star: Corey Perry, Anaheim Ducks

It appears Perry is getting back to his old ways after his most recent stint on the IR. The Ducks forward notched his third hat-trick of the season. Ryan Getzlaf assisted on 2 of 3 Perry goals, including this stretch pass that banked off Cody Franson to a streaking Perry:

Honorable Mention: Andre Markov assisted on 2 of 3 power play goals for the Habs ... Despite taking the loss, Flyers goalie Rob Zepp had a pretty good game. He only allowed 1 goal on 26 shots by the Caps. He made an incredible save on Eric Fehr at the end of the second period:

... The Ducks scored twice in one shift against the Leafs ... Cory Schneider and the Devils brought a 5-1 lead into the third period, and the Kings made things interesting late in the game, as they are inclined to do lately; however, it wasn't enough and a Jagr-less New Jersey won 5-3; Steve Bernier scored 2 goals. At one point, NJD scored 3 goals in 1:08 ... LA lost, but Drew Doughty was still who we thought he was as he assisted on this Dustin Brown goal:

Did You Know? It's been one month since the Ducks last won a game with a goal differential greater than one goal.

Dishonorable Mention: Columbus threw only 16 shots at Carey Price and he stopped 14 of them ... Matt Niskanen destroyed Scott Laughton with an open ice hit, and the Flyers forward did not return:

... Toronto is still looking for a goal in California after being shut-out by the Kings and Ducks. David Booth left the game after taking an accidental elbow to the face by Anaheim's Sami Vatanen ... LA's goaltending was less than stellar against New Jersey. Martin Jones started and was pulled after giving up 3 goals on 8 shots. Jonathan Quick came in and allowed 2 more goals on 7 shots. Jones returned to the net to start the third stopped all 5 shots he faced.

Spurs battle past Burnley in Cup replay

Tottenham Hotspur stormed back from 2-0 down to beat Burnley 4-2 in their FA Cup third-round replay.

|||

London - Tottenham Hotspur stormed back from 2-0 down to beat Burnley 4-2 in their FA Cup third-round replay despite resting their top striker in the once-fabled competition.

Red-hot Harry Kane watched from the bench as Danny Rose sealed the home victory for eight-times FA Cup winners Spurs after Burnley, who gave their leading forward Danny Ings a breather, had scored twice in the first eight minutes.

The overbearing significance of the Premier League was underlined by Southampton also resting top scorer Graziano Pelle for much of their replay at second tier Ipswich Town but fellow forward Shane Long struck with an instinctive finish after 19 minutes to secure a dour 1-0 win.

With both sides third in their divisions and the clubs winning their only FA Cup in the competition's sideburn-filled glory years of the 1970s, the replay after a 1-1 draw in Southampton promised much.

But, in truth, the gap in quality was clear, although a hamstring injury to influential midfielder Victor Wanyama might lead Southampton fans to question the worth of the FA Cup as they chase a Champions League place.

At least the “magic” of the Cup was slightly in evidence in Wednesday's other replay.

Third tier Bradford City thumped second tier Millwall 4-0 at home to set up a fourth-round glamour trip to Premier League leaders Chelsea.

Tottenham's prize for battling back against Burnley at White Hart Lane is a home tie against top-flight strugglers Leicester City in round four.

“It was a very interesting game. It was a strange game,” Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino told reporters.

“The team has shown character and faith. It's important to grow in the group.”

Tottenham's progression looked unlikely in north London after a goal from Burnley reserve striker Marvin Sordell and a deflected Ross Wallace free kick.

But forgotten midfielder Paulinho netted from close range after 10 minutes before a blistering Etienne Capoue strike just before halftime made it 2-2.

Pochettino made seven changes to the team beaten 2-1 by Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Saturday and the players that came in gave him a nice selection headache following Saturday's lacklustre display.

Romanian Vlad Chiriches headed Spurs in front from a corner early in the second half before fellow defender Rose capped off the win after another assist from the ever inconsistent Roberto Soldado who was guilty of a glaring miss just before halftime. – Reuters

News sport : Marc Gasol drops sweet no-look assist, huge poster dunk as Grizz beat Nets

In his first meeting with the head coach under whom he went from "Pau's heavy-set little brother" to "Western Conference All-Star and Defensive Player of the Year," Marc Gasol decided he wanted to give Lionel Hollins a little reminder of the good ol' days they spent together in Tennessee. I suspect the new head coach of the Brooklyn Nets would've preferred a simple Hallmark card or Edible Arrangement, because this piping hot dish by the Memphis Grizzlies center was a bit too cruel to be kind:

[Follow Dunks Don't Lie on Tumblr: The best slams from all of basketball]

This, somewhat remarkably, was Big Spain's only assist of Wednesday's game, but boy oh boy, was it a doozy.

Gasol slips a screen for partner-in-pick-and-roll-crime Mike Conley and flashes to the left block. As he receives the ball when Conley hits him on the roll, Gasol realizes that Nets wing Joe Johnson has slid across the lane to impede his path to the hoop. Rather than stop and pop or try to power through the seven-time All-Star, though, Gasol takes a nifty little dribble to his right, side-steps into the paint and fakes like he's going to put up a short hook before deftly dropping the ball over his shoulder with a no-look feed to Tony Allen — Johnson's initial mark, who has taken advantage of the lack of attention paid to him in the far corner by cutting along the baseline to the basket — for a too-easy deuce. Protect the ball, reward the cutter, get the bucket and do it with a considerable amount of style. Simply beautiful.

While Gasol showcased his point-caliber court vision and soft touch with the ball to set Allen up for two early in the third quarter, he chose to use a bit more brute force to get his own offense at the expense of Nets rookie big man Cory Jefferson later on in the contest:

Our apologies to Mr. Jefferson, but ... let's take another look at that, shall we?

Marc Gasol dunks on, over and through Cory Jefferson. (Al Bello/Getty Images)

Good gravy, Marc Gasol.

The Spaniard finished up with 18 points on 6-for-11 shooting to go with eight rebounds, two steals, one block and that one glorious assist in 30 1/2 minutes as Memphis mostly cruised to a 103-92 victory over former coach Hollins' Nets at Barclays Center on Wednesday. Zach Randolph led the way for the Grizzlies with 20 points on 8-for-11 shooting to go with 14 rebounds and three assists, while Allen (13 points, four rebounds, two steals) and noted sketch comedy enthusiast Courtney Lee (18 points, 3-for-4 from 3-point range, three assists) did damage on the wings and Dave Joerger's defense forced 19 Nets turnovers that led to 22 Grizzlies points, helping Memphis improve to 27-11, the third-best record in the West.

New addition Jeff Green made his Grizzlies debut, and while he didn't exactly set the world on fire with his shooting, needing 11 field-goal attempts to score his 10 points off the bench, but he did show flashes of the athleticism and positional versatility that could make him a valuable rotation contributor for a Grizzlies team looking to be able to match up with the myriad threats that the Western Conference playoffs figure to present, according to Brian Mahoney of The Associated Press:

"We're never going to be a small-ball team, but we do have to be able to match up small ball with all the teams in the West," Memphis coach Dave Joerger said. [...]

[Green] sees how he can be a perfect fit in Memphis.

"I mean, I'm surrounded by threats," the 6-foot-9 forward said. "It's a great feeling to have. Coach just wants me to go out there and just play my game and just be aggressive."

Hollins, for his part, seems to be looking for a bit more aggressiveness out of his Nets, who dropped their seventh straight to fall to 16-23 on the season, just 1 1/2 games ahead of the Indiana Pacers and Charlotte Hornets for the No. 8 seed in the East's playoff race. With Kevin Garnett suspended after his headbutt of the Houston Rockets' Dwight Howard and Deron Williams once again inactive as he works his way back from injury, high-priced Nets Johnson (eight points on 3-for-12 shooting in 38 minutes) and Brook Lopez (11 points on 5-for-9 shooting, four rebounds) failed to carry the day, and Williams replacement Jarrett Jack (10 points on 4-for-12 shooting, six assists) had a miserable time trying to create for himself or others against the Grizzlies' stout defense.

Brooklyn couldn't match up with Memphis on the interior, getting outscored 66-40 in the paint and allowing 14 offensive rebounds that turned into 22 second-chance points for the Grizzlies. There weren't many bright spots for the Nets, save for the continued production of second-year man Mason Plumlee (15 points on 7-for-9 shooting, nine rebounds, two assists, a steal and a block), but even he couldn't muster up much to say in his team's defense after yet another loss, according to Tim Bontemps of the New York Post:

“It’s tough, man,” Plumlee said. “No one is feeling sorry for us. We just have to get it together and get a win. Whatever that means — less turnovers, getting to the free throw line, being more aggressive. At the end of the day, you can point at everything, but we have to find a way to win.

“As a player, you know what it takes, and we have to go out and win. It’s simple … you’ve just got to win.”

While Hollins' new team keeps searching for ways to win, his former charges kept on rolling, winning their second straight and improving to 12-7 on the road ahead of a matchup with the suddenly surging Orlando Magic in Central Florida on Friday. And while Gasol's typically a reserved sort, he had to admit that Wednesday's win was a little bit special, according to Mahoney:

"It was good to beat him, honestly," Gasol said. "I know how competitive he is and he knows how competitive I am."

He sure does. I'm betting he could've done without the reminder, though.

News sport : Ducks score twice in single shift against Leafs, goal awarded to Atlanta (Video)

The Toronto Maple Leafs season may be best summed up by what happened Wednesday night in Anaheim.

It started with Toronto's Richard Panik and Trevor Smith taking penalties at the same time, giving the Ducks a full two-man advantage. Credit to Toronto for holding their own for nearly the entire penalty kill. Key word there is 'nearly'.

Then the craziness began...

With 4-seconds remaining on the 3-on-5, Anaheim's Kyle Palmieri sent a puck past Jonathan Bernier. At least, he thought he did, but the play continued. Everyone on the ice seemed a bit stunned, leaving Hampus Lindholm to grab the puck, and without a doubt, score on Bernier.

Yep, the Ducks scored twice on one shift against the Leafs.

The NHL wanted to make sure the right Duck was credited with the goal, and proceeded to review the Palmieri shot, instead of just giving the for-sure goal to Lindholm.

It gets better.

Once the Palmieri goal was confirmed by the Situation Room, the referee had the task of explaining the result to the crowd. He proceeded to award the goal to 'Palmieri of ATLANTA' before correcting himself. (Didn't I mention the game is IN Anaheim?)

Here's the video of the whole ordeal:

News sport : Victor Oladipo throws down game-sealing 360 dunk as Magic beat Rockets

Granted, it's not necessarily anything new — I mean, we've seen it before — but man, Victor Oladipo's on-the-break 360-degree dunk is still a very cool dunk:

It's especially cool when it comes in the final minute of the fourth quarter, off a lead-pass assist that followed a knifing-through-traffic steal from your starting-to-put-it-together rookie backcourt partner, to put both the finishing touches on a second consecutive big-time performance and a very bold exclamation point on an impressive home win over against a Western Conference playoff team. Cool stuff all the way around, if you ask me.

[Follow Dunks Don't Lie on Tumblr: The best slams from all of basketball]

The helicopter hammer not only brought the Amway Center faithful to their feet; it also gave the second-year man out of Indiana his second straight 30-point performance, marking the first time in his young career that he's eclipsed that mark in consecutive games. Perhaps most importantly, it also all but extinguished (if not practically, then at least spiritually) the Houston Rockets' hopes of coming back to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat at the hands of Oladipo's Orlando Magic. A Patrick Beverley layup on the ensuing possession would cut the Magic's lead to five, but James Harden's attempt at a deficit-carving 3-pointer went wanting and Jacque Vaughn's club made its free throws down the stretch, putting the finishing touches on a 120-113 win that gave the Magic back-to-back wins for the first time in 2015.

Oladipo finished with a game-high 32 points on 12-for-19 shooting, going 3-for-4 from 3-point land and 5-for-6 from the foul line, to go with six rebounds, six assists, three steals and three turnovers in 38-plus minutes of work. The offensive explosion comes on the heels of his 33-point outing in Orlando's Monday win over the Chicago Bulls, which you probably remember more clearly for Nikola Vucevic's screwface-inducing posterization of Pau Gasol. (Vucevic did his fair share of damage on Wednesday, too, chipping in 25 points on 10-for-17 shooting, snaring 12 rebounds, dishing three assists and snagging three steals in 37 minutes to outduel the man for whom he was traded a couple of years back, former Magic All-Star Dwight Howard.)

After missing the first nine games of the season recovering from a sprained medial collateral ligament in his right knee, Oladipo struggled at times to find his rhythm and touch over his first two weeks back. He's looked awfully good since, though, averaging 17.3 points, 4.2 assists, 3.4 rebounds and 1.8 steals in 34.6 minutes per game since Dec. 1, shooting 48.5 percent from the floor, 43.5 percent from 3-point range and 79.4 percent from the foul line. He's been aggressive, explosive and often opportunistic, as he was in back-cutting behind Beverley for this big-time slam to put Orlando up 100-98 late in the fourth quarter:

The guy who set Oladipo up on those two dunks has been pretty important of late, too.

Elfrid Payton, the second of the Magic's 2014 first-round picks (along with the injured Aaron Gordon), chipped in 15 points (including 12 in the fourth quarter) along with six rebounds, four assists and two steals in the win. The rookie out of Louisiana-Lafayette still has a long way to go when it comes to shooting the basketball, but he's stepped up his facilitating of late — his assist-to-turnover ratio has improved from just over 2-to-1 over the first two months of the season to nearly 3-to-1 over his last 11 contests — and the typically moribund Magic offense seems to have a bit more juice when Oladipo and Payton are paired in the backcourt.

The Magic as a whole average 95.43 possessions per 48 minutes, according to NBA.com's stat tool, which ranks 22nd among the 30 NBA teams in pace of play. When Oladipo and Payton share the floor, that rises to 97.6 possessions-per-48, which would be the eighth-fastest pace in the league over the course of the full season. And while the backcourt-of-the-future isn't exactly a dominant offensive force of the present — Orlando has averaged 101.3 points per 100 possessions in their 499 shared minutes, equivalent to the Boston Celtics' No. 20 full-season mark — that's still quite a bit better than what the Magic have managed on the whole while clanging their way to a tie with the Charlotte Hornets for the league's fourth-worst offense (99.2 points-per-100).

Things appear to be trending upward in those regards, too. Over the last dozen games, Orlando's averaging 103.8-per-100 in Oladipo-Payton minutes, a solid and just-above-league-average mark that would rank just below the John Wall-led Washington Wizards in offensive efficiency, while getting up and down to the tune of 98.6 possessions-per-48, which would place below the five fastest offenses in the league this season. While the Magic still lack enough shot-creation, shot-making and floor-spacing to become a truly legit offense, they might have settled on the sort of offensive identity that many young and athletic teams tend to favor, and Oladipo seems happy with it.

"We just figured it out, man," Oladipo said in an on-court post-game interview, flashing a big grin as he was asked about the Magic's recent penchant for pace-pushing. "It took time, but we figured out what we need to do in order to win. We figured out that we've got to play fast and we've got to play at a high tempo no matter what happens, and we've got to stick together. We've got to just continue to keep working."

Whether that work will eventually pay the sort of dividends that turns Vaughn's club from "object of intrigue among NBA insiders" into "frisky young team that can sneak into the playoffs and make some noise" remains to be seen. For the moment, though, after back-to-back wins over playoff teams in which its young studs turned in both strong play and scintillating highlights, Orlando fans should take a moment to celebrate their often unexciting squad seeming to locate at least a little bit of actual on-court magic.

News sport : Ryan Suter receives 2-game suspension for elbowing Steve Downie

Hockey Day in Minnesota just got a whole less homegrown.

Wild defenseman Ryan Suter has been suspended by the NHL for 2-games after he elbowed Pittsburgh's Steve Downie in the jaw on Tuesday. Downie left the game and did not return.

To the Department of Player Safety video!

Pretty easy call right there. There was no reason for Suter to throw the chicken wing, even if it is Steve Downie. (Relax Penguins fans, that called "a joke.") Suter felt bad about the play and sent an apology to Downie through Sidney Crosby.

This is Suter's first brush with The Man, hence the light suspension. He'll miss games against Buffalo and Arizona, the latter of which is a home game celebrating Hockey Day in Minnesota.

Without Suter in the lineup, life doesn't get any easier for Wild coach, Mike Yeo. At least Yeo has kept his sense of humor intact. From Mike Russo of the Star Tribune :

“I only looked at it once,” coach Mike Yeo said. “We have the hearing this evening. But what I saw when I looked at it initially is that he’s not looking at the player at all. First off if you know the player, you know that’s not his intention at all. He’s not in any way a dirty player. It’s hard for you to quote this, but he’s looking at the player and I think he’s, …”

Humorously, Yeo then juts out his right elbow like a chicken wing and accidentally nailed NHL.com reporter Joe Yerdon’s recorder. Yeo apologized, then said with a laugh, “See how easily it happens?”

Yeo continued, “I think he puts his elbow up just to box the guy out and we’ve had other things that have been our other focus this morning, but that was my initial thought.”

No word if Yeo is subject to supplemental discipline for his behavior towards Joe Yerdon in the press scrum.

News sport : Nicklaus: Woods may be playing Phoenix Open to build confidence

Jack Nicklaus never was much for playing easier golf courses. Tiger Woods isn't either. So the Golden Bear has a theory as to why the Big Cat is starting his 2015 at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, held at a venue in TPC Scottsdale that yields a lot of birdies and low numbers.

"I think that sometimes I would go play tournaments early in the year that actually you did shoot some low scores because I didn’t feel like I was quite ready to challenge a difficult golf course," said Nicklaus during a conference call to promote a USGA documentary, "Nicklaus: The Making of a Champion," which will air on Fox this weekend.

"So sometimes I would go where I could build confidence in my own game. So my guess is Tiger is going to Phoenix so he can build confidence in his own game and get some self‑confidence because he hasn’t played for a long time, to now build himself back up to the more difficult courses."

Woods is making his first start at Phoenix in 14 years, with his last coming at the '01 Phoenix Open. The 14-time major winner has a good, albeit limited and dated track record at TPC Scottsdale, which is probably why Woods chose it over the Northern Trust Open at Riviera, a course on which he's never fared well, and the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, where six-hour rounds are commonplace.

Of course, Woods hasn't won since the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational in August 2013. More important than chasing an 80th PGA Tour win, however, is developing confidence in his new-but-old swing that he's developed since ending his 2014 after the PGA Championship. As Woods gets more tournament reps and his scoring improves (assuming it does), he'll feel more confident heading into the big-name events that typically dominate his schedule.
