News sport : Greg Cosell's Playoff Preview: How the Colts help Andrew Luck

Andrew Luck is an important figure in the Indianapolis Colts’ game at the Denver Broncos, of course.

What I want to look at is how the Colts protected Luck against the Cincinnati Bengals last week – and they did it well – and some of the route concepts that Indianapolis will use against Denver to get receivers like T.Y. Hilton open. Because these things are vital for their chances of success at Denver on Sunday.

Luck played very well against Cincinnati. It stood out right away how patient Luck was. He was the chain mover in the Colts offense and he needs to consistently hit 5-to-7 yard passes. But a big reason Luck was able to make those passes is the Colts did a good job protecting him, even with a line that had some changes due to injury.

The Colts played a high percentage of two- and three-tight end sets on regular downs and distance situations. No matter the set, the Bengals couldn’t generate any pass rush on Luck with their four-man defensive line, in either their base or nickel defense. Offensive tackles Anthony Castonzo and Joe Reitz (who was starting at right tackle because of injury) held up well.

In the second quarter, the Bengals showed “double A gap” alignment with their inside linebackers, and blitzed Vincent Rey and the slot corner Leon Hall from Rey’s side. Hall would have been clean off the edge but Reggie Wayne chipped defensive end Margus Hunt, pushing him inside, and that allowed Reitz to work outside and get his hands on Hall. That allowed Luck the time to work and climb the pocket and take advantage of a matchup of receiver Hakeem Nicks against safety George Iloka for a 45-yard gain.

Luck is also one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL in terms of pocket movement. He has great feel for sliding within the pocket to find a relatively quieter spot to deliver the ball. He does not look at the rush and lose his downfield focus. With that in mind, let’s take a look at one of his highlight plays from last week.

The Colts came out in a three-by-one set with Donte Moncrief on the slot to the three-receiver side. He ran an “over” route attacking single high safety Iloka. The Bengals had safety Reggie Nelson blitzing from Luck’s right, and defensive end Will Clarke dropping into coverage. Luck ran up in the pocket to avoid Nelson’s blitz. That gave Moncrief time to cross Iloka’s face. Luck made a great throw as he was falling down for the score.

I also want to show a route concept that helped Hilton get a 30-yard gain in the second quarter. The Colts attacked the Bengals linebackers in coverage because that’s been a recurring issue for Cincinnati all season (and that bears watching in the matchup of the Colts offense against the Broncos defense). The Bengals ran “quarters” coverage. Wayne ran a deep post to lift cornerback Adam Jones. Tight end Dwayne Allen ran vertically at Rey. Hilton ran a underneath drag route across the field. Rey was in conflict because of Allen’s vertical route and Hilton’s drag route, because both are in his underneath area of responsibility.

A lot of the Broncos-Colts game will come down to how well Luck does against Denver’s defense. But all of the pieces must be working for the Colts offense, like they were against the Bengals.

Cowboys at Packers

A lot of attention has been paid to Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers and his calf injury, but it’s mostly a moot point if the Dallas Cowboys can’t get pressure on him.

Fortunately for the Cowboys, their defensive line has gotten better as the season has progressed.

Tyrone Crawford has become a strong “3 technique” defensive tackle, end Jeremy Mincey has been solid all season and rookie Demarcus Lawrence has really started to develop as a pass-rushing end.

Lawrence made a big play late in the game, getting a fourth-down sack in the final minute, also forcing a fumble. He used his hands effectively to create separation and get his inside arm past left tackle Riley Reiff.

Lawrence flashed against the Lions, both as a run defender and a pass rusher. It might have been his best game all season.

The other part of slowing down Green Bay’s passing game is how the Cowboys match up against the Packers’ receivers. Last week was pretty interesting in that regard: The Cowboys were clearly comfortable matching up Brandon Carr on Calvin Johnson and Orlando Scandrick on Golden Tate. Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb are different type receivers – Johnson is great but Nelson might be a more explosive vertical threat, and Cobb is much quicker than Tate out of the slot – so it’s tough to say if they’ll match up the same way. The Cowboys played a lot of man coverage last week, and that hasn’t been their M.O. this season. So it’s hard to say what the Cowboys will do against the Packers, but their approach certainly is worth keeping a close eye on.

News sport : Rex Ryan to become Bills' new head coach, per reports

FILE - In this Sunday, Dec. 28, 2014, file photo, New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan listens to a questions during a news conference following an NFL football game against the Miami Dolphins, in Miami Gardens, Fla. Jets owner Woody Johnson fired Ryan and general manager John Idzik on Monday, Dec. 29, 2014, after one of the most disappointing seasons in franchise history. (AP Photo/Lynne Sladky, File) Rex Ryan is about to become the new head coach of the Buffalo Bills, according to multiple reports.

The move comes as a surprise from multiple angles. First, Ryan will remain in the AFC East, where his defenses have bedeviled the New England Patriots. He'll also get to face his former team, the New York Jets, twice a year.

Ryan theoretically walks into a bit of an upgrade from New York in that he'll a far better defense and offensive stars like WR Sammy Watkins who were nowhere to be found in New York. He's also entering a small-market team where he'll become an instant media darling.

What Ryan doesn't have, yet, is a quality quarterback, with Kyle Orton retired and EJ Manuel benched. But there are options out there if he's wiling to pursue them, including Chicago's Jay Cutler and potentially Cleveland's Brian Hoyer. Could Rex succeed where others have failed? If he's able to turn either of those two quarterbacks into a sustained NFL success, they could start carving his bust for Canton.

The Falcons and 49ers had been pushing hard for Ryan, with the Falcons believed to be the front-runners. But Ryan interviewed with Atlanta last week and left without a deal, and that may have been a sign:

As recently as Saturday night, the AP reported that the Bills wanted to have second interviews with other candidates before making the hire, but apparently the team decided to take the leap early.

The Bills finished last year 9-7, but still missed the playoffs. Their 15-year streak without a postseason berth remains the NFL's longest.

Ribery rooting for Neuer

Bayern’s Franck Ribery is hoping team-mate Manuel Neuer nets the Ballon d’Or award on Monday.

|||

Doha – Bayern Munich’s Franck Ribery says he is hoping team-mate Manuel Neuer will become the first keeper to be elected world footballer of the year at Monday’s Ballon d’Or awards in Zurich.

Former France international Ribery was left bitterly disappointed when he was beaten in 2014 by winner Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi in the final voting.

Neuer is now in the same position, up against Portugal’s Ronaldo and four-time winner Messi of Barcelona for football’s most prestigious individual prize.

“Of course Manuel has a big chance. He is the best keeper in the world for me, has won a lot of titles, was the best German player at the World Cup and won the World Cup,” Ribery said on Sunday at Bayern’s training camp in Qatar.

“He can’t do any more. For me he has to be the clear winner.”

Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said he hoped Neuer would win but it seemed that Real Madrid star Ronaldo was again the favourite.

“When I look at what the experts have been saying these past few days they seem to be favouring Ronaldo,” he said.

“If I am honest I fear that as well.”

However, Rummenigge said Neuer would be a deserved winner, and that UEFA president Michel Platini had put it the right way.

“The World Cup in a World Cup year should be the decisive factor,” he said. “It is the most important event.”

Neuer is the first goalkeeper to make the final three of the award in its current form since 2010. No goalkeeper was named world footballer in previous years, with German Oliver Kahn second in 2002.

Soviet legend Lev Yashin was the only goalkeeper to win the Ballon d’Or award, more than 50 years ago in 1963.

Neuer could also be the first Bundesliga player to win the world player award as former Germany captain Lothar Matthaeus was with Inter Milan when he won the vote in 1991. – Sapa-dpa

Free kick helps Bale Real

Gareth Bale scored an unstoppable free kick to help 10-man Real Madrid end a two-game losing run on Saturday.

|||

Barcelona – Gareth Bale scored with an unstoppable free kick to help 10-man Real Madrid end a two-game losing run with a 3-0 win over Espanyol and stay top of the Spanish league on Saturday.

James Rodriguez scored first after a pinpoint long pass from Bale was skillfully tapped back to him by Cristiano Ronaldo at the Santiago Bernabeu in the 12th minute.

Bale made it 2-0 in the 28th when Espanyol goalkeeper Kiko Casilla could only watch as he rifled a left-foot free kick in off the post.

Madrid played with 10 men from the 53rd after Fabio Coentrao got a direct red card for a low tackle on Jose Canas. The difference, however, was unnoticeable and substitute Nacho Fernandez netted in the 76th with Espanyol in disarray.

Bale had a great chance to score before Fernandez’s goal when he sprinted onto Francisco “Isco” Alarcon’s thoughball. But the winger drew both the reproach of some sectors of the stands and Ronaldo’s ire when he didn’t pass to his strike partner, instead rolling the ball wide.

“Bale played a very good game,” Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti said. “The public asked him to pass to Cristiano, but all forwards want to score. Bale is just as fundamental for us as Cristiano. They get along well and only want to take Madrid as high as we can go.

“Altruism is an important component of the group. If we see selfish behaviour, we will deal with it.”

Madrid’s comfortable victory came after its Spanish record 22-win streak ended with losses at Valencia in the league and Atletico Madrid in the Copa del Rey.

Madrid built a four-point lead over Barcelona and Atletico, before the defending champion visits Camp Nou on Sunday. Madrid will still have a game in hand after the clash between its main title rivals.

Madrid hosts Atletico on Thursday needing to overturn a 2-0 first-leg defeat to keep alive its defense of the Copa del Rey title.

“It will be a tough game, but playing at home will help,” Ancelotti said about the derby.

Elsewhere, Valencia drew 1-1 at Celta Vigo, while Villarreal drew 1-1 at Malaga.

Eibar also continued to impress in its first season in the topflight with a 2-1 win over Getafe at home as it consolidated its hold on eighth place.

Valencia remained in fourth place and the last Champions League spot, although Sevilla can move ahead with a win at Almeria on Sunday.

Valencia went ahead after goalie Diego Alves saved Fabian Orellana’s spot kick in the 28th. It was the Brazilian ‘keeper’s 14th save of 33 penalties he has faced in the Spanish league.

Rodrigo Moreno dribbled inward from the right flank before firing a long strike under goalie Sergio Alvarez two minutes before halftime to give Valencia the lead.

Orellana made amends by scoring in the 61st to give ninth-place Celta its first goal in eight league games, breaking a drought that dated to November 30.

Villarreal’s draw extended its undefeated streak to 13 straight games in all competitions.

Malaga forward Nordin Amrabat chipped goalie Sergio Asenjo on the break in the 60th to cancel out Jonathan Dos Santos’ goal from a tight angle in first-half injury time.

Villarreal remained in sixth place, one point ahead of Malaga in seventh.

Eibar’s Manuel del Moral scored from a well executed set piece in the 33rd before Ander Capa secured the points in the 51st. Substitute Diego Castro pulled one back for Getafe 10 from time.

Wolfsburg reels from death blow

Wolfsburg is deciding whether to go ahead with a training camp in SA following the tragic death of Junior Malanda.

|||

Wolfsburg, Germany – Wolfsburg will decide on Sunday on whether to go ahead with a training camp in South Africa following the death in a road accident of midfielder Junior Malanda.

The 20-year-old Belgium Under-21 international was on his way to join the squad due to fly to South Africa on Saturday evening when he was killed in a car crash on a German motorway.

The club called off the departure and will hold a news conference later Sunday.

Hundreds of fans of the German Bundesliga club gathered at the team’s home ground, the Volkswagen Arena, late on Saturday to light candles, lay flowers and mourn.

“We are distraught and can simply not find the words to express our bewilderment,” club sports director Klaus Allods said.

“We all loved him dearly. He was the positive spirit within the team and a young man full of the joys of life.”

Messages of condolence and tribute have poured in. Bundesliga clubs have sent their commiserations, and Bayern Munich players held a minute’s silence Sunday at their training camp in Doha, Qatar.

Bayern sports director Matthias Sammer said in Doha: “We feel great sorrow. It is terrible thing for which words are difficult to find.”

Among many Bundesliga clubs with messages of condolence, Borussia Dortmund tweeted: “Words fail us. We are shocked, sad and with you (at)VfL_Wolfsburg. #RIPMalanda.”

Malanda was a passenger in an all-terrain vehicle which skidded off the A2 motorway and hit a tree amid heavy rain near the western German city of Porta Westfalica on Saturday afternoon. The driver and another passenger were seriously injured.

Police quoted witnesses as saying no other vehicle was involved in the accident. Malanda was thrown from the vehicle and died from his injuries at the accident scene.

Malanda, who joined Wolfsburg at the start of 2014 and had appeared in 10 Bundesliga games this season, was regarded as one of Belgian’s biggest talents.

“We cannot believe that he is no longer with us. Our thoughts at this dreadful time are with his family and relatives,” Allofs said.

Coach Dieter Hecking said: “I can’t even begin to explain how I am feeling right now and what is going through my mind.

“We just had a discussion with Junior yesterday and he was eagerly looking forward to his future. It was a joy to work with Junior and we had big plans together. I am unspeakably saddened.”

The club’s supervisory board chairman Francisco Javier Garcia Sanz said: “We are deeply saddened and totally shocked. Junior Malanda was a really young guy and a promising player, who had a great future ahead of him – his life has been cut brutally short far too early.

“Our thoughts are with his family, who we will attempt to assist at this difficult time. Speaking as a father, there are things that a person should never have to experience. His death is also a huge loss to VfL Wolfsburg.”

Malanda’s death caused sorrow in Belgium where many of the nation’s internationals tweeted their condolences.

“Indescribable... What sadness. Thoughts with all my heart to the relatives of Junior Malanda,” Belgium captain and Manchester City defender Vincent Kompany posted.

Belgium international and Wolfsburg team-mate Kevin De Bruyne posted on Instagram: “We have lost a great friend too early. Rest in peace. You will always be with us.”

The Belgian football federation said in a statement on Saturday: “The football world today lost a great talent. Junior Malanda lost his life this afternoon, at the age of 20. The Belgian Football Association extends its sympathy to family and friends.”

Fifa president Joseph Blatter also posted condolences, saying he was “shocked and saddened” at the news.

Malanda began playing for Belgian side Anderlecht before moving to French side Lille as a 12-year-old. After five years he moved back to Belgian to play for Zulte Waregem.

He joined Wolfsburg before the 2013-14 season but was loaned back to Zulte for the remainder of 2013, returning to Wolfsburg at the beginning of 2014. He was under contract until June 30, 2018. – Sapa-dpa

Vilakazi clinches draw for Bafana

Sibusiso Vilakazi came off the bench to secure a draw for Bafana with the Indomitable Lions on Saturday.

|||

Johannesburg – South Africa produced an inspired performance in the second half to earn a 1-1 draw against Cameroon in the Gabonese capital of Libreville as they continue preparations for the Africa Cup of Nations 2015.

Cameroon were quick off the blocks in the first half and almost grabbed the opening goal shortly after kick-off but Brilliant Khuzwayo was on the mark to smother the danger. The Indomitable Lions were then awarded a free-kick just on the edge of the box and Vincent Aboubacar fired Cameroon into the lead in the 7th minute with a great strike that gave goalkeeper Khuzhwayo no chance.

There was a bit of scare for Bafana Bafana in the first half as Andile Jali was stretched off with an injury but the tenacious midfielder shrugged the setback off and was soon back on the field. Bafana Bafana came close to grabbing the equaliser seven minutes before the break but Parker’s effort went just wide as the Cameroonians held on for a slender first half lead.

It was a much improved display by Bafana Bafana in the second half as they started probing the Cameroon defence. A brilliant run down the right ended with Matlaba’s fine strike fisted away by the Cameroon keeper on 56 minutes. Then Jali saw his thumping shot cleared for a corner. But with Bafana Bafana buzzing, it was just a question of time before they found that elusive equaliser.

Sibusiso Vilakazi proved to be an inspired substitute as he brought South Africa back on level terms in the 77th minute as he beat the Cameroon defence before planting the ball into the net. It could have been advantage Bafana Bafana moments later following a great run by Phala on the left but his cross into the box could not find a yellow Bafana Bafana shirt.

The match was part of preparations for the CAF Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Equatorial Guinea.

Coach Shakes Mashaba made six changes to the squad that defeated Zambia 1-0 on January at Orlando Stadium last Sunday.

Lampard finally signs MLS contract

Frank Lampard has finally signed his contract to play for New York City FC, the club confirmed on Saturday.

|||

New York – Frank Lampard has finally signed his Major League Soccer contract to play for New York City FC.

NYCFC confirmed to The Associated Press on Saturday that this week Lampard signed a contract to start in July – midway through the new team’s first season in MLS.

The announcement followed the AP detailing repeated misleading public statements from NYCFC and partner club Manchester City about Lampard’s status.

NYCFC stated last July that Lampard signed a two-year contract to start in August 2014. Within two weeks, Man City said the former Chelsea midfielder was returning to the Premier League on “loan” having previously categorically ruled out playing for another English club.

But after the Man City stay was extended on Dec. 31 until June, it emerged that Lampard was in fact on a permanent deal in England. Such was the confusion, the Premier League this week investigated the contractual confusion and prompted Man City to eventually confirm that Lampard was in fact only ever under contract with the English champion.

The Abu Dhabi-owned club’s parent company, City Football Group, acknowledged on Friday the announcement in July was an “error,” and that Lampard had previously signed only a “commitment” to play for the New York team from January 2015 on a two-year contract.

City Football Group confirmed on Saturday that Lampard had now signed the same commercial terms that he committed to last year. CFG did not immediately say if Lampard’s contract runs to December 2016 as originally intended or for two years from July 1.

More than five months after NYCFC’s erroneous announcement, MLS said on Saturday: “Frank Lampard has signed a contract for NYCFC.”

City Football Group’s conduct over Lampard has been criticised by US pundits and fans of NYCFC as well as newspapers in England. Britain’s Daily Mail newspaper said Man City’s “reputation at home and abroad is in tatters” over the “trail of misinformation and confusion.” – Sapa-AP

News sport : Kings lose Toffoli (mono), Pearson (broken leg) on Saturday

Things aren't going to get any easier for the Los Angeles Kings any time soon. Two-thirds of 'That 70's Line', Tyler Toffoli and Tanner Pearson, are out indefinitely for two very different reasons.

Prior to Saturday's tilt against the Jets, the Kings announced Toffoli has contracted a case of m... If you were going to interrupt and say 'mumps' you would be incorrect. Toffoli has MONO!

What are symptoms of mononucleosis, you ask? It shares some, but not all, characteristics of the mumps. From the CDC website:

  • extreme fatigue

  • fever

  • sore throat

  • head and body aches

  • swollen lymph nodes in the neck and armpits

  • swollen liver or spleen or both

  • rash

Per friend of the blog, Jon Rosen (@LAKingsInsider):

Perhaps you remember mono from your school days when it was known as 'the kissing disease'. Kissing is one way of getting mono, as it is spread through saliva.

As mentioned above, the amount of time Toffoli will be out is undetermined. (LA might as well burn all their water bottles and just get new ones now that mono and the mumps have invaded So Cal.) There is no magic treatment for mono, and he has to be especially careful about coming back to a contact sport. Again, from the CDC:

... Most people get better in 2 to 4 weeks; however, some people may feel fatigued for several more weeks. Occasionally, the symptoms of infectious mononucleosis can last for 6 months or longer.

...There is no vaccine to protect against infectious mononucleosis. You can help protect yourself by not kissing or sharing drinks, food, or personal items, like toothbrushes, with people who have infectious mononucleosis.

You can help relieve symptoms of infectious mononucleosis by—

  • drinking fluids to stay hydrated

  • getting plenty of rest

  • taking over-the-counter medications for pain and fever

Because your spleen may become enlarged as a result of infectious mononucleosis, you should avoid contact sports until you fully recover. Participating in contact sports can be strenuous and may cause the spleen to rupture.

Yikes! All the best to Tyler Toffoli in his recovery.

After Kings fans had time to digest the Toffoli news, they received another gut-punch by way of Tanner Pearson leaving the game after crashing legs first into the end boards. If you watch the video below, his left leg twists awkwardly as it makes impact with the boards and torques again as the rest of his body makes contact.

Pearson struggled to skate over to the bench and get off the ice as he put no weight on his left foot. After the game, Rosen confirmed what most feared:

Earlier in the day, Pearson was announced as an All-Star game rookie invite who would take place in the skills competition prior to the All-Star game. Pearson is the second All-Star roster member to fall to injury on Saturday as Jimmy Howard was injured earlier against Washington.

LA is not short on talent, but can occasionally fall prey to offensive droughts. Toffoli and Pearson combine for 47-points on the season so far. Toffoli leads the league with 4 short-handed goals. Pearson tops the Kings in game-winning goals at 3.

The Kings have not yet decided on making any movements fill the players spots for now. Note to Mike Richards: now would be a great time for you to show up.

News sport : Russell Wilson on verge of rewriting his legacy (and paycheck)

SEATTLE – The Seattle Seahawks are reportedly on the verge of making Russell Wilson the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL.

And maybe you think that’s a little crazy, because it's hard to argue Wilson is the best quarterback in the NFL, but the Seahawks have to see it as a wise investment.

We’re now two Seattle wins from completely recalibrating where Wilson is among all NFL quarterbacks, current and past. With two Super Bowl rings he’d join a very special club. And the way the Seahawks handled the Carolina Panthers 31-17 on Saturday, and the way they steamrolled everyone else in a six-game winning streak to end the regular season, there’s no reason to believe they can’t repeat. Especially with the Dallas Cowboys-Green Bay Packers winner on Sunday having to come to CenturyLink Field next week. The Seahawks are pretty amazing here.

The defense still is the centerpiece, and the fans love to go crazy when Marshawn Lynch breaks into the open and seeks out defenders to destroy, but drafting Wilson in the third round of the 2012 draft looks like one of the great all-time picks.

“There is a reason why they’re in the situation they are,” Panthers coach Ron Rivera said after listing all the ways Wilson beat them.

When the Seahawks need a play, he makes it. He has done that through his career. He did it in the Seahawks’ playoff opener, especially with some huge third-down completions.

“Sometimes I think I’m made for these situations,” Wilson said. “I just try to be prepared for it. If you’re prepared you’re never scared. You trust your teammates, you trust the guys around you, you trust the preparation, and you trust the ball is going to bounce your way. I believe that.”

The Panthers made sure Wilson, who had 849 rushing yards in the regular season, didn’t beat them with his legs. They played the read-option plays most of the time to force Wilson to hand the ball off, then go play the handoff. So Wilson had three nice touchdown throws instead. He was tremendous from the pocket – which he said was a focus this week – getting the ball out quick and to the right person.

On the first, he stood in against the blitz and lofted a pass to Doug Baldwin, letting his receiver beat man coverage and haul in the score. Wilson changed the play, seeing the Panthers were blitzing with no safety. He said the Panthers beat him on a “zero blitz” back in the regular season.

“I wanted to make sure I was prepared for that,” Wilson said.

The second throw was beautiful, right over the defense to Jermaine Kearse for a 63-yard score, the longest in Seahawks playoff history. The third was just a throw a good NFL quarterback makes, immediately recognizing the defense and getting the ball out quick to Luke Willson for a 25-yard score that put the Seahawks up 24-10.

And the Seahawks are back in the NFC championship game, and look just as strong as last season, when they beat the Denver Broncos 43-8 in the Super Bowl. And that brings us back to Wilson and his growing legacy, and soon-to-be bulging wallet. NFL Network reported that the Seahawks are prepared to make Wilson the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL when they can, after this season ends. Teams can’t give extensions to players until they’ve completed their third season.

Wilson doesn’t shine the light on himself, almost in a comical way. Here’s the list of players he thanked or patted on the back after the Panthers’ win: Kearse, Baldwin, Willson, the offensive line, the offensive line a few more times, center Max Unger and his backups who played when he was out with injury, the defense, Kam Chancellor, Earl Thomas, Richard Sherman, Steven Hauschka, quarterbacks coach Carl Smith, assistant quarterbacks coach Dave Canales and backup quarterbacks Tarvaris Jackson and B.J. Daniels.

Whew.

(AP) So we know Wilson is the most thankful quarterback in the NFL. Is he the best quarterback in the NFL, to match his reported future paycheck? Likely not. But what are Super Bowls worth? Joe Flacco got about $120 million with $52 million guaranteed after he led the Ravens to a Super Bowl, and there’s no question a big part of that was inflated by the title run. Aaron Rodgers, who has one ring, signed a $110 million deal in 2013 that is the biggest contract in NFL history on a per-year basis, at $22 million annually.

Wilson is already in that class, with one ring. Now what about two? He just turned 26 during the regular season. He’s already the third-youngest quarterback to lead a Super Bowl champion; he’d be the youngest to do it twice. And he’s going to go from making a little more than $662,000 this season to about $20 million annually.

So what historical path is Wilson on? Is he Joe Montana? He has won in all but one of his six playoff games, and the loss he played great in the second half only to have the Falcons hit a game-winning field goal at the end. Is he Terry Bradshaw, a great quarterback in his own right but also fortunate to land with a team that has a defense that might rank among the all-time greats when they’re done? It’s tough to say. If he joins the two-Super Bowl club, there just aren’t many comparisons. Especially for someone who might join the club in three NFL seasons.

Steve Young earned just one Super Bowl ring, but playing-wise maybe he’s the best comparison. While other mobile quarterbacks regressed this season, Wilson is going to start in the NFC championship game. Greg Cosell, a senior producer at NFL Films, said earlier this season that Young is really the only “dual-threat” quarterback to be a true success in the NFL as a great pocket passer and a dangerous runner. It seems like we have to be close to adding Wilson to that list.

He can probably thank the preparation he talks a lot about. He said being unprepared is his only fear in life. On Saturday night, he had nothing to be worried about. And if the Seahawks don’t win a second straight Super Bowl, it won’t be because Wilson isn’t ready.

“I’m pretty critical,” Wilson said. “I think we played a lights out game, to be honest with you.”

News sport : The Seahawks make CenturyLink Field shake in another playoff win

SEATTLE – The press box shook.

When Kam Chancellor put the Seattle Seahawks’ 31-17 divisional playoff win away with a 90-yard interception return – really, it was done long before then, but play along with me – the loudest crowd in the NFL erupted. As Chancellor ran down the near sideline with the longest touchdown in Seahawks playoff history, making the score 31-10, the noise was outrageous and the press box moved, if just a little bit.

This is why the Seahawks are so good. They have players like Chancellor, who isn’t even the first- or second-most celebrated player in the Seahawks secondary, but he's one of the best strong safeties in the NFL and was awesome on Saturday. And whether it’s the noise, intimidation or just the team on the field, CenturyLink Field is almost impenetrable for opponents.

The Dallas Cowboys won here eariler this season, and who knows, they might do it again. But if the Cowboys or Green Bay Packers (Sunday's winner comes here next week) knocks off these Seahawks before they reach a second straight Super Bowl, they’ll have done something really special. Panthers-Seahawks was the "other playoff game" on Saturday, mostly because the Seahawks never really allowed the Panthers much hope that they could win.

Seattle didn’t even play all that well and they were coasting, and the game was realistically over before Chancellor’s big interception. The Panthers weren’t coming back from 14 points down on this defense. They gave the Seahawks a tough game, really limiting Seattle’s run game. But Russell Wilson made three nice plays for a trio of touchdown passes and the defense handled it from there.

The Seahawks aren't unbeatable, but they look just as strong as they did last season. Seattle has won seven in a row dating back to the regular season, all by double digits, and the Panthers were the first in that streak to score more than 14 points on Seattle. Saturday's performance and the Seahawks' winning streak doesn't mean Seattle is unbeatable. But it's sure looking tougher to picture them losing.

News sport : Kam Chancellor doesn't block kick, but his jumps entertained us

Seattle Seahawks safety Kam Chancellor is a pretty special athlete, so Seattle used a special field-goal block with him at the end of the first half of Saturday night's game against the Carolina Panthers.

The plan was for Chancellor to time his jump, leap over the snapper and then have a free path to the kicker. And it worked, twice.

Well, it worked in that Chancellor got over the line cleanly, leaping right over the center at the snap and landing on the other side. Somehow, he didn't block either kick.

It didn't matter in the end. The first kick, which was good, was nullified due to a false start. The second one wasn't good, but Chancellor ran into the kicker for a penalty. The third attempt, Chancellor didn't try his leap, and the field goal was good to end the half.

Former NFL vice president of officiating said there was a call for running into the kicker because Chancellor didn't get a piece of the kick. Had he blocked it, there would have been no call.

Neither of Chancellor's leaps counted, but they were pretty impressive.

News sport : Virginia stays unbeaten with impressive road win at Notre Dame

Top 20 teams in this week's AP poll have only lost nine games at home so far this season.

Virginia owns three of those victories.

Having already defeated Maryland and VCU on the road in non-conference play, the unbeaten Cavs added another name-brand pelt to their collection Saturday. Efficient offense and disciplined defense rallied them back from a seven-point second-half deficit at previously surging Notre Dame and enabled them to edge the 14th-ranked Irish 62-56.

The key to Virginia's victory was the remarkable job Malcolm Brogdon did defending All-American candidate Jerian Grant. The Notre Dame star did not score his first basket until a transition layup with less than 10 minutes to go in the game and finished only 2-for-8 from the field for six points, barely one-third his season average.

Ten 3-pointers from Pat Connaughton, Demetrius Jackson and V.J. Beachem kept Notre Dame in it even as Grant struggled, but the Irish generated virtually no frontcourt offense against a pack-line defense designed to wall off the paint and force opponents to hit contested jumpers. A typically high-scoring Notre Dame team that averages 85 points per game shot just 33.9 percent from the field on Saturday en route to its first loss since Nov. 23.

Defense has long been Virginia's hallmark under Tony Bennett but the increased efficiency of its plodding offense has been what has transformed the Cavs from a good team into a top 10 team the past two years. That trend continued Saturday as the third-ranked Cavaliers shot 49 percent from the field and received double-digit scoring nights from Brogdon, Justin Anderson and Darion Atkins.

No Virginia baskets were bigger than the last two field goals it scored Saturday. Anderson hit a tie-breaking 3-pointer to give the Cavaliers the lead for good with just under four minutes remaining and Brogdon drove for a layup that made it a two-possession game with 1:22 to go, putting Notre Dame into desperation mode.

Saturday's win improves Virginia to 15-0 this season and hammers home that last year's ACC champs are again contenders to not only win the league again but also reach a Final Four. Nobody in the country has a better collection of road wins than the Cavaliers, who will be heavy favorites in their next four games before second-ranked Duke visits Charlottesville on Jan. 31.

So many low-scoring games this college basketball season are a result of poor shooting or too much clutching and grabbing on defense.

Virginia's games are often the exception to that, and Saturday's thoroughly impressive win in South Bend was the ideal example.

News sport : Jimmy Howard leaves on stretcher after injuring lower-body (VIDEO)

Right before puck drop, Red Wings goaltender Jimmy Howard was named to the All-Star team. Minutes after the game started, Howard and others were wondering if he was going to be able play again any time soon, let alone the All-Star Game.

After misplaying the puck behind the net, Howard was attempting to recover and make a save as Washington's Troy Brouwer slid the puck in the net. The result was Howard kicking his left leg out awkwardly in a split position.

Take a look...

Immediately after Howard went down for the save, he fell forward and stayed that way as the trainer made his way out to the ice.

After spending a minute or two with the goalie, the trainer signaled for the stretcher to take Howard off the ice. Howard barely moved from his belly until the stretcher made it out to him. Howard kept his mask on as he was wheeled off the ice.

Petr Mrazek replaced Howard in net for the Red Wings.

It's too soon to speculate which part of the lower body Howard injured or how long he could be out. Tough sledding not just for Howard, but for Detroit who was surprising people this year, partially on the strength of good goaltending.

News sport : Julian Edelman's TD pass? His first throw in a game since 2008

Many football fans know that New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman was a college quarterback at Kent State. But the Baltimore Ravens apparently forgot.

With momentum shifting in the game, the Patriots having cut a two-touchdown lead in half, Tom Brady threw a backward pass to Edelman, who gunned it downfield — perfectly — to a wide-open Danny Amendola for a shocking 51-yard, game-tying touchdown.

Considering Brady's downfield accuracy this season, it's one of the better deep passes the Patriots have had this season. Seriously.

It's odd to see anyone other than Brady throwing a pass for the Patriots in a playoff game, especially when they were trailing. Cute call by offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels? Yes — but quite effective.

That was Edelman's first throw in the NFL. Yeah, the Patriots don't run these kinds of plays with Brady under center very often.

The last pass Edelman attempted on a football field before that was in Kent State's 23-13 win over Buffalo back on Nov. 28, 2008. For those keeping track at home, Edelman was 13-of-23 passing for 114 yards with a touchdown that day.

It appears the Patriots have found a downfield passer. Kidding! Joke, people, that's a joke!

News sport : John Harbaugh gets penalty for being on the field, unlike Dez Bryant

One of the oft-repeated arguments about how the Detroit Lions got hosed was that Dallas Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant came on the field and didn't get a flag for it.

Well, the NFL is obviously listening to the wishes of its fans, because the officials in the Baltimore Ravens-New England Patriots game decided to call an unsportsmanlike conduct flag on Ravens coach John Harbaugh for wandering out on the field too far to argue a call.

Now everyone can be happy! Just what you argued for, more flags!

NFL head of officiating Dean Blandino said after the Lions-Cowboys game that calls like Bryant being on the field are under an official's discretion (Bryant being on the field without his helmet on has been mistakenly cited about a million times since the game, but it's not a foul for a player to come off the sideline onto the field without a helmet). The officials in this case decided that Harbaugh had crossed some line, figuratively and literally. After so much attention was paid to Bryant not getting called for coming on the field, it wouldn't be a big surprise if the officials in this weekend's games were told to watch out for it.

It was a pretty big penalty. The Patriots trailed 28-14 in the third quarter at the time of the call, the penalty moved New England half the distance to the goal line, and shortly after that Tom Brady hit Rob Gronkowski for a 5-yard touchdown. The Patriots tied the game on their next possession.

After seeing the officials call that unsportsmanlike conduct penalty that really didn't need to be called and that made a big difference in the game, it's clear the game is better off with officials calling more needless penalties like the one on Harbaugh.
