News sport : Arizona Cardinals DT Darnell Dockett wants Braxton Miller at Florida State

If Jim Harbaugh is the biggest coaching move of the 2015 offseason, a potential transfer by Ohio State QB Braxton Miller would easily be the biggest player move. And if it happens, Arizona Cardinals DT Darnell Dockett wants Miller at Florida State.

Dockett tweeted towards Miller, who missed 2014 with a shoulder injury, on Wednesday.

(Coincidentally, Dockett missed the 2014 NFL season with a torn ACL)

If he graduates from Ohio State this year, Miller could transfer to another program and play immediately via the graduate transfer rule. While Ohio State coach Urban Meyer has said he expects Miller back with the Buckeyes in 2015 and Miller himself has not given indications of transferring, changing schools is seen as a strong possibility given the glut of quarterbacks Ohio State has with Cardale Jones and the way J.T. Barrett played before his ankle injury.

Florida State, of course, doesn't have a starting quarterback set for 2015 now that Jameis Winston is leaving for the NFL draft. Miller would be a fit there if he chose to transfer. But given how good of a quarterback he's been in his career, he'd be a fit at a lot of places.

We'll know much more about the answer of the "transfer or not-to-transfer?" question in the coming weeks.

News sport : When asked about Brian Schottenheimer, Steve Spurrier is wonderfully Spurrier

New Georgia offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer played under Steve Spurrier when the South Carolina coach was a coach at Florida.

So after news of Schottenheimer's hire spread on Wednesday, the Macon Telegraph reached out to Spurrier and ask the ol' head ball coach what he thought of his former quarterback moving from the same position with the St. Louis Rams to the Georgia Bulldogs.

Spurrier did not disappoint.

From the Telegraph:

“He’s been an NFL coach. I don’t know why he went to college,” Spurrier said. “Maybe he wanted to go back to college, or maybe it was just a good opportunity for him. That’s an excellent opportunity for any coach. Georgia always has a whole bunch of good players. They probably have been the most consistent team in the East. Well, maybe they haven’t, heck we’ve beat them four out of five years, but overall they have probably been one of the best teams on the Eastern side.”

Vintage. And you know, maybe Georgia will be the fun team to poke for Spurrier now that Clemson beat the Gamecocks in November. Mentioning five straight wins just doesn't have the cachet it once did after a 35-7 loss.

Before being the Rams offensive coordinator, Schottenheimer was the New York Jets offensive coordinator and a QB coach for the San Diego Chargers and Washington Redskins.

News sport : Puppies pick Oregon to win National Championship (Video)

Do you like puppies? Oh, who are we kidding, everyone likes puppies. So you're going to want to watch this video.

The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon had it's puppy prediction segment for Monday's National Championship on Wednesday night. Seven puppies had a turf walkway separating themselves from an Ohio State bowl of kibble and an Oregon bowl of kibble.

Hopefully their (lack of) enthusiasm isn't a reflection on the quality of the game. While one puppy was ready to make a pick, everyone else took their time before two reluctantly settled on Oregon, making the Ducks the official "winner" of the contest.

Barca mess - where does Suarez stand?

Luis Suarez faces an uncertain future at Barcelona following the dismissal of sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta.

|||

Luis Suarez faces an uncertain future at Barcelona following the dismissal of sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta and the resignation of his assistant Carles Puyol.

The Uruguay striker is coming under increasing scrutiny at the Nou Camp since his £75million move from Liverpool and is under pressure to rediscover his goal-scoring form.

Despite just three goals in 12 games since his move from Anfield in the summer, his situation at Barcelona will be monitored by the top clubs in the Barclays Premier League.

Arsenal previously tried to sign him but Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea will continue to monitor the forward’s progress over the next five months. Barcelona have been decisive in the past with top players and sent Zlatan Ibrahimovic on loan to AC Milan when he failed to settle into Pep Guardiola’s side after his £50m move from Inter.

Although Barcelona have no intention of selling Suarez yet, he could be the fall guy in the summer under a new regime at the Nou Camp.

Yesterday club president, Josep Maria Bartomeu, revealed that he was calling the presidential elections early as the team prepare for this evening’s Copa del Rey clash with Elche in the Nou Camp.

Suarez’s position is further complicated by the Court of Arbitration for Sport’s decision to uphold Fifa’s one-year transfer ban for illegal approaches to under-age players, which means they cannot replace him yet. The Uruguay forward, who completed a four-month ban for biting in October, was brought in during the summer on Zubizarreta’s watch.

Suarez was desperate to join Barcelona and got his wish when Liverpool accepted a £75m bid for him. Coach Luis Enrique, battling to save his job at the club after falling out with Lionel Messi, has played Suarez in various roles up front. He started last Sunday’s clash with Real Sociedad but the striker was unable to prevent them losing for the third time this season in La Liga.

He has scored just once in the league — the 5-0 victory over Cordoba on December 20 — and has scored twice in Champions League victories over Apoel Nicosia and PSG.

Puyol announced he had terminated his working contract at the club in the wake of Zubizarreta’s sacking on Monday and Luis Enrique’s future was due to be discussed at an emergency board meeting last night. – Daily Mail

Chiefs are not complacent - Baxter

Kaizer Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter declared his team ready to do hard battle despite holding a 15-point advantage over their nearest rivals in the league.

|||

Johannesburg – No sooner had his charges reported for duty at their first training session of the year, Kaizer Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter declared his team ready to do hard battle despite holding a 15-point advantage over their nearest rivals in the league.

“It's good that we finished the first round at the top but we still have a long way to go before we can start talking about winning the league title,” Baxter said.

“It's a good feeling but we must not get carried away and we need to make our players aware that the race is far from over.”

Amakhosi started the season with a bang, playing 18 premier league matches without a loss, and collecting 46 points along the way.

Defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns, who led the chasing pack, and had a game in hand, snatched the league away from Chiefs last season, when Amakhosi had held a comfortable lead.

“Sundowns showed grit and determination last season and this league cannot be billed as 'a one-horse race' as challenges will always be there,” Baxter said.

He warned his players not to be complacent as anything could happen, particularly as his charges would also be involved in the Nedbank Cup and the upcoming CAF Champions League.

Chiefs start their continental sojourn against Township Rollers of Botswana next month and, with skipper Itumeleng Khune back to full fitness, Baxter said he could wait for the season to get underway.

“We have a responsibility to do well in Africa and there is no doubt that the tournament is our priority.

“We need to strike a balance in all three competitions if we are going to prevail. The players are aware of the task at hand so we will have to wait until next month to see whether we can do well on all three fronts, especially in the league”.

The Naturena-based outfit celebrated its 45th birthday on Wednesday and Baxter said the philosophy of the club, chaired by founder Kaizer Motaung, held them in good stead.

“It is really special to be part of such an institution. The chairman's dream and hunger still lives on and I think we are ready to give him and the supporters something to celebrate this year.

“It would be fantastic to win the league, do well in Africa and add another trophy on top of the MTN8 we clinched at the beginning of the season. But it is important to put our foot down and not get carried away because not all the teams will be easy to beat.” – Sapa

Lukaku vows to lift struggling Everton

Romelu Lukaku has vowed to breathe new life into Everton’s season and lift the pressure on manager Roberto Martinez after ending a six-game barren run.

|||

Romelu Lukaku has vowed to breathe new life into Everton’s season and lift the pressure on manager Roberto Martinez after ending a six-game barren run.

The club’s £28million record signing struck an injury-time equaliser against West Ham on Tuesday night to keep Martinez’s side in the FA Cup and head off a crisis following four straight Premier League defeats.

It was Lukaku’s first goal in seven games and he said: ‘I wanted to show the manager how he can count on me.

‘I wanted to show it was just a temporary thing.

‘I want to win silverware, I want to end up as high as we can in the league and we have five months to do that.’

Martinez has been under fire as Everton have been too intricate at times, and Lukaku added: ‘We mixed up how we play a bit more against West Ham. At times we were a bit more direct.

‘The players were asking about doing that too. I asked them and we all said to the manager, “Can we play a bit more direct sometimes?”.

‘We have a style of play where we keep the ball a lot, but knew we needed to take more responsibility, play to my strengths more and they did it perfectly.’ Daily Mail

Chelsea seek to regain momentum

Stuttering Chelsea retained their Premier League lead by virtue of the alphabet heading into the new year but will need a quick riposte at home to Newcastle United to hold Manchester City at bay.

|||

London - Stuttering Chelsea retained their Premier League lead by virtue of the alphabet heading into the new year but will need a quick riposte at home to Newcastle United to hold Manchester City at bay.

Jose Mourinho's side gleaned a mere four points from nine during a frenzy of holiday fixtures and a humbling 5-3 loss at Tottenham Hotspur on Jan. 1 meant champions City restored parity at the top having at one stage trailed by eight points.

An easy FA Cup win over second tier Watford offered Chelsea a breather, but they host managerless Newcastle knowing their margin for error between now and May is miniscule.

Buoyant City, who are level on points (46), goal difference (25) and goals scored (44) with Chelsea, are away at struggling Everton on the same day, looking to continue a blistering run which has yielded 26 points from the last 30 on offer.

After Mourinho's side had threatened to run away with it earlier in the season, the title race now effectively starts from scratch with an 18-match sprint.

Chelsea's stumbles have happened away from home with losses to Newcastle and Tottenham and a draw at Southampton.

They have been immaculate at home though, winning nine out of nine in the league and striker Loic Remy believes the recent slip-ups are not the start of a longer slide.

“The mood is really positive and we're focused on all of our targets,” Remy, who scored against Watford, said. “During the season every team will be in trouble at certain times, so for us I hope it's behind us now with the last two league games.”

John Carver remains in temporary charge of mid-table Newcastle after Alan Pardew left for Crystal Palace and he will be wary of a Chelsea backlash as he tries to stake his claim for the job on a full-time basis.

“I'd be a fool if didn't want to be head coach of this football club,” Carver, who could have first-choice keeper Tim Krul back, told the Northern Echo.

City will be boosted by the imminent return of Premier league top scorer Sergio Aguero as they travel to face an Everton side who have lost four consecutive league matches.

“I wanted you to know I've already started field work. Slowly but surely I'll be back at the right moment. Thanks for the wishes!” the Argentine, who hurt his knee in the 1-0 home defeat of Everton, said on Twitter.

Edin Dzeko and skipper Vincent Kompany are also expected to be available for Manuel Pellegrini.

Third versus fourth meet at Old Trafford on Sunday as Manchester United host Southampton while in-form Tottenham, up to fifth, are Pardew's first league test as Palace manager on Saturday. Tottenham would rise to fourth with a win.

Tottenham face six games in 21 days, including a two-legged League Cup semi-final and an FA Cup replay against Burnley.

Dortmund will never sack Klopp

Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke said they would never sack coach Juergen Klopp despite the team being in the relegation zone.

|||

Berlin - Borussia Dortmund coach Juergen Klopp enjoys the club's full backing, despite his team being in 17th place in the Bundesliga, with CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke saying on Wednesday they would never sack the 47-year-old.

Dortmund, champions in 2011 and 2012, have been languishing in the bottom spots of the Bundesliga table and lost 10 of their 17 matches in the first half of the season.

“We will never sack Juergen Klopp,” Watzke told SportBild magazine. “He has a lot of merits at the club. It will never come to a confrontational situation with him.”

Klopp, who took over in 2008 and also led them to the 2013 Champions League final, has suffered his worst first half to a season at Dortmund, Bundesliga runners-up in 2014.

The coach has already reacted, signing Slovenian Kevin Kampl from Red Bull Salzburg to boost his midfield in a reported 12-million euro deal. The league resumes on January 30.

Despite their bad domestic run Dortmund are still in the running for the Champions League title, taking on Juventus in the round of 16 next month. – Reuters

News sport : Steph Curry is the fastest to 1,000 3s in NBA history

Most every basketball fan knows that Golden State Warriors star Steph Curry is one of the most fantastic outside shooters the game has ever seen. He holds the single-season record for made three-pointers, has led the league in three-point makes and attempts for the past two seasons, and looks like the only active player with a chance of challenging Ray Allen's career record for made three-pointers.

In part, that's because Curry has accomplished a lot in relatively few career games. Heading into Wednesday's home game against the Indiana Pacers, Curry had hit 999 three-pointers in 368 appearances. He hit the millennium mark relatively early with this shot halfway into the first quarter:

With that make, Curry became the fastest player to 1,000 three-pointers in NBA history, breaking Dennis Scott's previous record of 457 games. That's a difference of 88 games, or more than a full 82-game season. Curry did play in only 26 games of the lockout-shortened 2011-12 season due to persistent ankle issues, but he has otherwise never missed more than eight games.

The next question is if Curry can ever break Allen's career record of 2973 threes (possibly more if he returns to the league). The 39-year-old Allen has accomplished that mark in 3,000 games, a testament to his longevity and ability to grow into different roles as he has aged. Curry turns 27 on March 14 and could conceivably average 200 threes into his early 30s, but it's not clear if he can keep pace with Allen when he is not his team's primary ballhandler.

Regardless, Curry's latest record makes enough of a case that we are looking at one of the greatest shooters in basketball history. The record is almost secondary to the experience of witnessing it.

News sport : Here's Clippers owner Steve Ballmer totally losing it while dancing to Fergie

If you're anything like me, you woke up this morning thinking, "You know, it's been a lit-tle bit too long since I've seen Los Angeles Clippers owner Steve Ballmer do something gleefully manical." Well, luckily, Wednesday evening's matchup with the in-house rival Los Angeles Lakers featured a performance by noted Black Eyed Pea Fergie between the first and second quarter — for, y'know, reasons — which afforded the former Microsoft CEO and famed exploder an opportunity to show us just what kind of moves "eff you" money really buys. Because when you spend $2 billion — with a b — on something, you get to have as much fun with it as you want, in whatever way you want. Them's the rules.

With that in mind: hit it, Dan Woike of the Orange County Register:

[Follow Dunks Don't Lie on Tumblr: The best slams from all of basketball]

Another, perhaps even more remarkable angle, courtesy of Arash Markazi of ESPN Los Angeles:

OK, so I guess the new boss is really into "L.A. Love.".

Like, really into it.

Nobody has ever believed anything as fervently as Steve Ballmer believed he was crushing it during that Fergie song. Sure, Los Angeles might host a nightly parade of the deluded, as David Cross once joked in an NSFW stand-up bit, but it can still be a pretty entertaining parade ... especially when the participants elect to shake it so, so violently.

News sport : Kemba Walker hits 3rd game-winner of the season for Hornets

Charlotte Hornets point guard Kemba Walker can be an uneven player. He is the team's biggest perimeter scoring threat but has shot just 39.7 percent from the floor for his 18.1 points per game, runs the offense decently but hasn't managed more than 5.5 assists per contest, and could be overpaid when his contract extension kicks in next year. Walker is very important to the Hornets as currently constructed, but he has clear limits as a player.

Yet there's no question that Kemba has a penchant for hitting big shots at the ends of games. He cultivated that reputation as a college star at Connecticut and has only built on it as a pro, hitting two game-winners already this season as the Hornets' primary end-of-game scorer. When the game is on the line, the opponent needs to lock in on him.

Sometimes nothing can deter Walker from grabbing a win for his team, which we found out at the end of Wednesday's home game against the New Orleans Pelicans. With seconds left and the score tied 94-94, Walker faced off against Jrue Holiday in isolation and took him straight to the hoop. Walker drew a foul and hit a runner to give his team the advantage:

Marvin Williams stole Ryan Anderson's inbounds pass on the final possession and split a pair of free throws to finish off the 98-94 win for Charlotte.

Walker's dramatic winner came just one offensive possession after he hit a stepback jumper over Anthony Davis to give the Hornets the lead. Davis (32 points, 12 rebounds, four blocks) matched him immeidately with a short basket in the lane, but he did not get the opportunity to send the game to overtime.

Walker scored 31 points on 12-of-24 shooting for his third-straight 30-point performance, all of which have been wins without the services of Al Jefferson and Lance Stephenson. The even better news is that Walker has improved his efficiency over that time, making more than 45 percent of his field goals. Perhaps he can find a way to be as good in the other 47 minutes as he is in the 48th.

News sport : J.R. Smith on his Cavs debut: 'When in doubt, shoot the ball'

J.R. Smith exudes confidence. (Photo by David Maxwell/Getty Images) Joining a new team via trade can be a difficult experience. Players don't only need to adjust their lives to a new city — they also need to get up to speed with a team's on-court systems and daily habits. When most of us change jobs, we at least have the opportunity to prepare over the course of a hiring process. A trade can strike at any time with little warning.

New Cleveland Cavaliers guard J.R. Smith joined the team for Wednesday's home game against the Houston Rockets with an eye on improving the bench and adding some scoring punch while LeBron James continues to sit with a sore knee. The perpetually enigmatic and frustrating Smith has not been impressive since winning the Sixth Man of the Year award in the spring of 2013, but there is a chance that he can do some good for the Cavs.

At the same time, Smith has a whole lot to learn to get on the same page as his new teammates. Luckily, he had a whole plan for how to approach his first game in the Cleve:

This quote might not mean much if it came from a normal three-point specialist, but J.R. Smith long ago lost any claim to such status. He is the definition of a chucker, a guy with little conscience or a standard conception of a good shot. When Smith is at his best, such designations don't really matter — he's talented enough to hit the toughest shots on the floor and can get as hot as anyone in the sport's recent history. Unfortunately, the idea that J.R. would shoot as a fallback option doesn't inspire much confidence that he can turn around his career with the Cavs. Relying on shooting alone caused a lot of problems for the Knicks.

News sport : Pedro Martinez wants his Jheri curl on his Cooperstown plaque

Many things were amazing about Pedro Martinez — his stats, his changeup, his interviews and, as he'll even admit, his hair.

We joked Tuesday, after the 2015 Hall of Fame class was announced, that Randy Johnson should go in cap-less and just his mullet flow. Well, Martinez told reporters Wednesday that he definitely wants his famous Jheri curl on his Cooperstown plaque.

Who could blame him? Look at this thing.

(Getty Images)

Pedro has reined in the curls a little bit these days, but a reporter from TMZ Sports asked Martinez on Wednesday whether his Hall of Fame plaque should come with the Jheri curl. He's on board. Under his cap, of course.

"I wish. It was great. It was amazing. That's how people pretty much saw my face all the time."

We can argue about a lot of things related to the Hall of Fame, but no one should argue this one: Pedro Martinez needs to have a Jheri curl on his Cooperstown plaque.

News sport : The Cleveland Cavaliers traded for Timofey Mozgov because they had to

Some NBA observers are calling the Cleveland Cavaliers “desperate.”

Well, yeah. That’s sort of what you do when you have LeBron James on your team. You do everything you can to win right, bloody, now. It’s the only sensible line of attack, and though we need to remain patient both this season and next as James and his new’ish teammates figure this out, you don’t want to waste any hours when LeBron James is on your roster.

The team’s front office proved as much on Wednesday when it dealt two future first-round draft picks to the struggling Denver Nuggets for center Timofey Mozgov. Mozgov (8.5 points, 7.8 rebounds and 1.2 blocks in 25 minutes a game, starting each contest) won’t be charged with solving all of Cleveland’s defensive problems – they ‘re currently ranked 22nd on that end and at times it boggles as to how they’re not ranked lower in that realm – but he can’t help but put a critical suture on an obvious wound.

The price Cleveland had to pay for such medical attention were picks owed to them by the Memphis Grizzlies and Oklahoma City Thunder – two winning organizations that could battle for the Western Conference crown this season if the seeds align right. These will eventually be solid picks, and the Cavaliers will miss them.

The Nuggets will take in the Oklahoma City Thunder’s first-rounder, which is protected through the first 18 picks of the draft this year and through the top 15 next season. OKC is currently in the 12th position right now, pre-lottery, but they’re expected to vault up the NBA standings after injuries to both Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook led to a 17-18 start to the season.

Denver may miss out on the pick this year, but unless something catastrophic happens to the Thunder in 2015-16 the Nuggets will most assuredly receive the pick in 2016 (the same protections are in place for 2017, and it turns into two future second round picks should the catastrophic thing happen two seasons in a row).

Memphis’ selection is more appealing. The pick is currently protected through the top five and between spots 15-30 this year and next, 6-through-14 slots the championship-level Grizzlies aren’t falling into unless injuries hit or Marc Gasol shocks the world by leaving the Grizz as a free agent this summer. Beyond that, though, as the group ages it might be possible that the Nuggets fall into a very good pick as the protections (top five in 2017 and 2018, completely unprotected in 2019) dissipate.

This is why the immediate reaction to Cleveland’s deal seems to have sent the NBA into a tizzy. This is also why we need to re-introduce ourselves to the context the Cavaliers are dealing with.

The Cavs, due to the miserable work of their previous general manager, will have to swap picks with the Chicago Bulls this June if the Bulls (who are currently six games ahead of Cleveland) finish with a better record than Cleveland. Unless the wheels completely fall off in Ohio and the Cavs end up with a top ten lottery pick in 2016, they’ll have to send their pick in that year’s draft to Boston. They’ll have their 2017 selection, per NBA rules, but those two other assets in the Thunder and Grizzlies’ picks are gone for good.

On top of that? The trade exception used to acquire Mozgov on Wednesday was grabbed from the Boston Celtics in exchange for two second-round picks (and that 2016 first, in exchange for what could have been a needed player in Tyler Zeller and more cap space for LeBron). This move, coupled with other deals, means that the Cavs won’t have a second-round pick until 2020.

This is sort of how goes, though.

The Cavs have to win now. They have to put themselves in a place where a healthy LeBron and just now getting it Love, Irving and helpers can trump regular season records and make it to the Finals. Just as Kevin Garnett is the oldest 39-year old in NBA history and Kobe Bryant is the oldest 36-year old in NBA history, LeBron James is the oldest 30-year old in NBA history due to the ungodly minutes he’s taken in – his career arc isn’t comparable to Michael Jordan in his 30s. James working as a B-level version of his former championship self should be more than enough to build around as a championship contender, but he needs help. Now.

Many criticized the Cavs for bringing in the sort of players that tend to follow in LeBron’s wake during the 2014 offseason, shooters like Mike Miller and James Jones or a veteran former star in Shawn Marion, but the reality in retrospect (and even then, to those working through this stuff daily) was that the Cavaliers didn’t have a whole heck of a lot of options. Players like Mozgov (or better) just weren’t really available for the Cavs to either sign or deal for. The Cavs’ needs – defense, rim protecting – mainly were just listed as attributes as opposed to actual living and breathing NBA players that were available for acquisition.

Even now, players better than Mozgov weren’t really available. Cleveland lusted after Memphis’ Kosta Koufos, who is currently a reserve center luxury working on a team featuring (at worst) the second-best center in basketball right now, but there is absolutely no guarantee that the Grizzlies would take back their own future pick, the Thunder selection, and even an anti-efficiency type like Dion Waiters in return for that reserve.

Is that the wrong move for Memphis in the long term, especially considering the potential of the pick they owed Cleveland and now Denver? Sure. The Grizzlies would have likely passed on that deal for the same reason Cleveland just made this deal – for some teams, it is about winning now.

These are penny-wise moves made with the knowledge that the long term ramifications will be hard to swallow in a few years, and that’s just fine. In an era that seems to fetishize first-round picks and as-yet-acquired players that are only currently listed as “assets,” this was a refreshing move. All with Cleveland’s un-guaranteed Brendan Haywood contract still lingering as the last chance trade chip.

Sometimes a desperate move is a needed move. Sometimes they’ll fall flat on their face, but sometimes that’s what you have to risk with your back against the proverbial wall.
