News sport : UAB leading rusher Jordan Howard signs with Indiana

Nov 29, 2014; Hattiesburg, MS, USA; UAB Blazers running back Jordan Howard (7) carries the ball against the Southern Miss Golden Eagles in the second half at M.M. Roberts Stadium. (Chuck Cook-USA TODAY Sports) UAB’s leading rusher has found a new home.

It was announced Thursday that Jordan Howard, who was 13th in the nation in rushing in 2014, has signed to play for Indiana.

In the final season of UAB football, Howard ran for 1,587 yards and 13 touchdowns and was named first team All-Conference USA. He’ll fill the role of record-setting back Tevin Coleman, who ran for a school-record 2,036 yards this season and recently declared for the NFL draft.

"As our season ended, we thought it was likely Tevin Coleman was headed to the NFL," Indiana head coach Kevin Wilson said in a release. "Jordan instantly became our top target. What happened at UAB is unfortunate for Jordan, his teammates and everyone involved with the program, but this is a perfect match for both sides.”

He 6-foot-1, 228-pound Howard will be a junior for the Hoosiers and is eligible to play immediately. He averaged 5.2 yards per carry for the Blazers while registering eight 100-yard games and five 150-yard games. In UAB’s season finale at Southern Miss, Howard racked up 262 yards, a career-high.

“We recruited him very, very hard and we are excited he is joining us,” Wilson said. “The sign of a good program is finding good players to replace good players, and we have done just that."

Jordan reportedly held offers from Vanderbilt, Iowa, Louisville, Kansas, Nevada, Marshall, Southern Miss., Western Kentucky and Middle Tennessee State. He told ESPN.com that he eventually narrowed down those options to Indiana and Vanderbilt before committing to the Hoosiers this week.

"There was something about Indiana I just liked," Howard told ESPN.com. "And it was big with them having a 2,000-yard running back the previous year and most of the offense coming back.”

As a freshman in 2013, Howard, a native of Gardendale, Ala., rushed for 881 yards and two touchdowns. He also combined for 13 catches for 155 yards and two scores over the past two seasons.

Gerrard is one of Liverpool’s greatest

The fact that Steven Gerrard never won the Premier League title will not detract from the legacy he leaves behind.

|||

London - It is testament to Steven Gerrard's ability that his Liverpool career will be remembered for heroic acts of willpower that ensured no deficit was irretrievable and no opponent unbeatable, rather than the league title that eluded him.

There was surprise when he announced on Friday that this season would be his last at Anfield after nearly 17 years in which his ability to wrestle victory from the jaws of defeat made him one of the finest players in the club's history.

Yet there was also a sense that perhaps this was a sensible decision from a player who had made his name influencing big games in a major way, when the alternative would have been to allow his Liverpool career to peter out.

Simply fading into the background would have been unthinkable for a player who always grabbed the attention.

Former Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier recalls the moment he first clapped eyes on the 17-year-old Gerrard.

The Frenchman spotted a gangly midfielder dashing from box-to-box and behaving like a leader, immediately promoting him to the first team despite concerns about his fragile young body.

Houllier handed Gerrard his debut in 1998 and five years later he became a precocious captain at the age of 22.

His greatest moment on the pitch undoubtedly came in the 2005 Champions League final in Istanbul.

Gerrard peeled his team mates off the floor at 3-0 down to AC Milan with a header that reduced the deficit and inspired one of the greatest comebacks in the history of European football.

That culminated in a lung-busting Gerrard charge into the area that led to him being brought down for a penalty from which Liverpool equalised before clinching the trophy in a shootout.

This was Gerrard at the peak of his powers, able to influence any occasion, to grab any match by the scruff of the neck and turn events in his favour, just as he did in the FA Cup final 12 months later.

With Liverpool trailing West Ham United 3-2 heading into stoppage time, a cramping Gerrard let fly from 30 metres, rifling home his second goal of the game to take the match into extra-time and then penalties where the Merseysiders won out again.

Much of Gerrard's career could have been plucked from the pages of the finest comic book heroes, except the final chapter in which his long wait for a league title was extended by a cruel slip, just as the fairytale appeared to be heading for its customary happy ending.

Having twice before finished Premier League runners-up, Liverpool were top of the table with three matches to go when Chelsea arrived at Anfield with little but pride to play for.

With the game 0-0, Gerrard shaped to receive a simple pass when he mis-controlled the ball and slipped on the turf, allowing Chelsea's Demba Ba to scamper away and find the net.

Liverpool lost the game, the title went to Manchester City and Gerrard's hopes of claiming the Premier League trophy for the first time were extinguished.

With Liverpool 17 points behind leaders Chelsea and Manchester City in the current standings, Gerrard knows he will never get his hands on the only major club trophy he lacks, which along with an unfulfilled international career, will be a major disappointment.

Like the rest of his England contemporaries, playing for his country on the big stage was a frequent let-down, with the his final act perhaps the most underwhelming, captaining the team at last year's World Cup as they exited in the group stages with a whimper.

Few players spend their whole career at one club and no Liverpool fan will begrudge Gerard a swansong abroad having given his best years to Liverpool and resisted the urge to jump ship to Chelsea in 2005 when he was courted by the cash-rich Londoners.

That decision cost him his best chance of winning the league, but in an era when loyalty is a rare commodity, he will leave the club he grew up supporting as a boy feted as one of their greatest players if not among their most successful. – Reuters

Equatorial Guinea sack coach

African Nations Cup hosts Equatorial Guinea have fired coach Andoni Goikoetxea just over three weeks before the tournament.

|||

Malabo - African Nations Cup hosts Equatorial Guinea have fired coach Andoni Goikoetxea just over three weeks before the tournament, plunging their preparations into chaos.

Goikoetxea departed on Thursday after the election of a new president for the Equatorial Guinea Football Federation (FEGUIFUT) last week.

New FEGUIFUT president Andres Jorge Mbomio confirmed the sacking of the former Spanish international, who had been in charge for the last two years, but gave no reasons in a statement on Friday.

Goikoetxea, who earned infamy in his playing days as a tough-tackling defender dubbed the 'Butcher of Bilbao', tweeted a thank you note to players “for their work and many good results”.

But failure in a recent regional competition for the Equatorial Guinea side plus defeat in two warm-up games in Portugal last week likely hastened his departure.

Equatorial Guinea, who last month stepped in as emergency host of the African championship in place of Morocco, have been preparing in Portugal but lost to fourth tier Villafranquense and Benfica's B team.

Fan abuses Wenger in dug-out

Arsene Wenger was confronted by an angry fan towards the end of his side’s defeat by Southampton.

|||

Arsene Wenger was confronted by an angry fan towards the end of his side’s defeat by Southampton.

Stewards hauled him away from in front of Wenger and assistant manager Steve Bould and he was later arrested. Southampton believe the man was an Arsenal fan who had bought a ticket among the home supporters but Wenger claimed it was a Saints fan and that he did not hear what was shouted at him.

‘It was a young boy,’ said the Arsenal manager.

‘I think he was a Southampton fan. He was not aggressive at all. I don’t think he said anything.’

But the man, wearing a purple hoodie, jeans and white trainers, clearly gesticulated at Wenger and Bould. Last month a group of Arsenal supporters, angered by defeat at Stoke, booed and swore at Wenger as he waited to board a train back to London.

The defeat yesterday left them sixth, three points behind Southampton in fourth.

Delighted Southampton manager Ronald Koeman said: ‘I don’t like to talk about mistakes of the opponent but the second goal was maybe a New Year present.’

Gerrard confirms Liverpool exit

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard is to leave the club at the end of the season, the player announced.

|||

Steven Gerrard, who announced his departure from boyhood club Liverpool on Friday, is a player destined to be remembered as much for his extraordinary achievements as for his agonising near-misses.

The 34-year-old midfielder has captained Liverpool for 12 years, notably lifting the Champions League trophy after an unforgettable comeback against AC Milan in 2005, but coveted successes elsewhere have eluded him.

Although he has also won two FA Cups, three League Cups and the UEFA Cup, among other honours, he has never laid his hands on the Premier League trophy and met with nothing but heartbreak in his 14 years with England.

The last 12 months have reflected the latter years of his career in microcosm -- glorious opportunity, followed by crushing disappointment.

Gerrard was poised to capture his first Premier League title last season, but his cruel slip in an April defeat against Chelsea tilted the momentum in the title race in Manchester City's favour.

Weeks later, after one of the most accomplished seasons of his career, he went to Brazil hoping for a memorable international swansong at the World Cup, only for England to crash out after two matches.

"It's probably been the worst three months of my life," he admitted during Liverpool's pre-season tour of the United States.

Gerrard has endured more than his fair share of disappointment since inspiring Liverpool to glory in the 2006 FA Cup, with the 2012 League Cup the only major honour he has won since.

He also went close to winning the league title under Rafael Benitez in 2009, when Liverpool looked destined for the championship, only for Manchester United to steam past them in the home straight.

It was a similar story with England, who he represented on 114 occasions and captained at three major tournaments.

His first England goal was a sizzling 25-yard strike in a famous 5-1 win away to Germany in 2001, but his international career thereafter was a succession of false dawns and high-profile failures.

But taken as a whole, in his club career – which began when he walked through the doors of Liverpool's academy at the age of eight – Gerrard has scaled almost all the heights.

From the header that sparked the comeback to end all comebacks against Milan in Istanbul to the sensational 35-yard thunderbolt that took the 2006 FA Cup final to extra time, he has swaggered through his Anfield career with the audacity of a comic-book hero.

He came third in the voting for the Ballon d'Or in 2005 and was voted the greatest player in Liverpool's history by fans in a 2013 poll.

No less a judge than Zinedine Zidane observed in 2009: "Is he the best in the world? He might not get the attention of Messi and Ronaldo, but yes, I think he might be."

No longer the box-to-box game-changer of his pomp, Gerrard has successfully streamlined his game under current Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers, sitting in front of the back four and spraying passes around the pitch with unwavering precision.

He will leave Anfield as Liverpool's third-highest appearance-maker, behind only Ian Callaghan and Jamie Carragher, and with a claim to the title of the club's greatest-ever player that only Kenny Dalglish can contest.

"Because of what he has done for the club, I believe he is the best," Carragher, Gerrard's fellow Scouser and former team-mate, told the Daily Telegraph in 2012.

"Dalglish, (Graeme) Souness and Ian Rush all played together in a great team, but because football is a team game, it's been harder for Stevie because he's not always played in great teams.

"I definitely think it's a case with Stevie that people will not fully realise how good he has been until he stops playing.

"None of the players who've played alongside him would dispute he's the best the club has ever had, and I would hope none of the managers would, either." – AFP

Gerrard set to quit Anfield

Steven Gerrard is set to make the shock announcement that he will leave Liverpool at the end of the season.

|||

Steven Gerrard is set to make the shock announcement that he will leave Liverpool at the end of the season, ending a rollercoaster 25-year association with the English giants.

Reds captain Gerrard's Anfield future has been the subject of speculation for several months and he is believed to have decided to continue his career overseas when his contract expires in the close season.

The 34-year-old midfielder, who scored two penalties in Thursday's 2-2 draw against Leicester at Anfield, has already been linked with a move to MLS franchise LA Galaxy and a Daily Express report says he is poised to go public on his plans later Friday to avoid speculation over his future becoming a distraction during the rest of the season.

Clubs from the Middle East will also express interest in Gerrard according to the report, with the former England skipper free to speak to foreign sides since the first minute of the new year.

Former Liverpool teammate Jamie Carragher described Gerrard's decision as a “sad day”.

“Sad day for Lfc & English football with the Gerrard news, I think it's the right decision all things considered,” tweeted Carragher, who himself made 737 appearances for Liverpool.

He added: “Leaving or retiring is a great confidence booster, this morning my timeline was full of “whys Gerrard starting” now it's “Gerrard best ever”.

Gerrard's announcement that he plans to leave his boyhood team, the only club he has played for in his professional career, will come as a huge blow to many Liverpool supporters who anticipated he would extend his contract by at least another year.

Liverpool offered Gerrard a new deal in November, but it is said he has decided the time is right to move on at the end of the campaign.

Gerrard joined Liverpool as an eight-year-old and has made 695 first-team appearances, scoring 180 goals.

His greatest moment came when he scored in the Champions League final in 2005 and inspired Liverpool to come from 3-0 down at half-time against AC Milan and win the trophy on penalties.

But his hopes of winning the Premier League are likely to remain unfulfilled after Liverpool came up agonisingly short last season and lost out to Manchester City.

Gerrard returned to the starting line up for Thursday's draw with Leicester after being rested for Monday's win over Swansea.

But, with his performances below his previous high standards for much of this season, the prospect of being a substitute in more matches next season as manager Brendan Rodgers manages his fitness has helped shape his decision to quit Anfield.

The Express report said Gerrard, who famously turned down two moves to Chelsea, will not play for another club in England out of respect for Liverpool.

Gerrard made his debut in 1998, coming on as a substitute in a game against Blackburn Rovers.

His club trophy haul includes the Champions League, UEFA Cup, two FA Cups, three League Cups, one Community Shield and two UEFA Super Cups.

Gerrard was capped 114 times by England, having made his international debut in 2000, but he retired from international football after last year's World Cup where England exited in the first round.

Former England star Gary Lineker tweeted that the Anfield giants owed Gerrard a huge debt for his loyalty and his performances.

“So that's it then, Gerrard is going. What a player he has been for Liverpool. Dragged teams to levels they'd never have reached without him,” said Lineker.

Gerrard's impending announcement came after Rodgers rued the defensive mistakes which he said were hampering his side's attempts to build momentum in the Premier League following the draw with Leicester.

The Reds had a 2-0 lead at half-time thanks to two penalties from Gerrard.

“They were two great penalties by Stevie, who showed great composure,” said Rodgers.

However, goals from David Nugent and Jeffrey Schlupp ensured the Foxes collected a share of the points as they hit back in the second half.

It left Liverpool seven points adrift of fourth place and Rodgers lamenting the need for his side to tighten up at the back.

“We are disappointed at being 2-0 up and conceding the goals that we did, poor goals and giving away the ball so cheaply,” Rodgers said.

“We have seven out of nine points, we should have more, at 2-0 even playing as poorly as we did. We should have closed that out and it cost us.

“I think we have to do better on the edge of the box. The shots come in too easy, and we have to be stronger and aggressive.

“We talked about it. We had a plan in place in terms of after the opponent scores or after we score, the five minute spell, the idea of what to do and how to work that but we didn't do it.” – AFP

Jose blames ref for Spurs defeat

After Chelsea were ripped apart 5-3 by Tottenham Hotspur, Jose Mourinho blamed the defeat on a penalty that was not given.

|||

London - Jose Mourinho added another entry to his extensive personal diary of conspiracies when, after Chelsea were ripped apart 5-3 by Tottenham Hotspur, he blamed the defeat on a penalty that was not given.

Not two-goal Harry Kane's domination of his centre backs, though he did admit some defensive mistakes, not Tottenham's midfield showing more verve and tenacity, not his players seeming to run out of energy and certainly not his decision to keep Didier Drogba on the bench when his team needed goals.

Instead Mourinho, who said last week there was an anti-Chelsea conspiracy from other coaches, referees and media, felt the key moment came when the ball struck prone defender Jan Vertonghen in the penalty area when his side were 1-0 up through a Diego Costa goal.

“At 1-0 one clear action could make it 2-0 and normally with 2-0 the result would be completely different,” he told reporters after the Premier League tussle at White Hart Lane.

“At the end of the day we are speaking about two matches. We have one point out of six when two crucial decisions would give us six,” Mourinho added, referring to the 1-1 draw with Southampton on Sunday when he also railed against a penalty that was not given.

“Every game is unpredictable but there are things in the game that are becoming predictable.

“Of course I hate to lose but I prefer to lose like I did against Newcastle with a clean performance from referee Martin Atkinson and an unlucky performance by us,” he added in reference to Chelsea's only other defeat this season.

“But in a game when you lose because of football it is a different feeling.”

Chelsea's defeat means they are joined on 46 points at the top of the league by Manchester City who beat Sunderland 3-2 on Thursday. – Reuters

Podolski could leave for Inter

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger says striker Lukas Podolski could leave the club for Inter Milan in the transfer window this month.

|||

Southampton, England – Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger says striker Lukas Podolski could leave the club for Inter Milan in the transfer window this month.

Speaking after his side lost 2-0 at Southampton on Thursday in the English Premier League, Wenger said Inter had a “farcical” opening offer for Podolski rejected, but “after, they came back a bit more serious.”

The 29-year-old Podolski, a World Cup winner with Germany in Brazil, last played for Arsenal in its 4-1 win over Newcastle on Dec. 13.

He was not in the squad against Southampton because of a tight groin, with fellow strikers Danny Welbeck and Yaya Sanogo also absent through injury.

Defence hindering United’s progress

Manchester United’s upward trajectory cannot disguise the continuing problem at the back, which was on show again at the Britannia Stadium.

|||

London - Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal says he has been overwhelmed by the support he has received from fans even after defeats but, if he does not act to strengthen his defence, he might soon find their patience running out.

After a dire opening to the season, Van Gaal has steadied the ship and Thursday's 1-1 Premier League draw at Stoke City made it 10 games in a row without defeat.

They are firmly established in third place and though the title looks a step too far, a return to the Champions League is very much within their grasp.

However, the upward trajectory cannot disguise the continuing problem at the back, which was on show again at the Britannia Stadium on Thursday.

Van Gaal opted to go with a back three of Jonny Evans, Chris Smalling and Chris Jones, all of whom have struggled this season, and none of them looked convincing in one of the league's most demanding fixtures.

Many centre backs struggle to deal with Peter Crouch but the giant Stoke forward was in dominant form on Thursday, setting up an unmarked Ryan Shawcross for Stoke's opener after two minutes, hitting a post and forcing a handball by Smalling that could well have been given as a penalty.

In a fierce swirling wind it was a day for no-nonsense defending but the three of them continually let long balls bounce dangerously, and Evans almost paid a heavy price for doing just that when he was dispossessed by Mame Diouf who then shot wide.

Radamel Falcao earned United a point with a 26th-minute equaliser but they offered little else in collecting their third draw in four games and Van Gaal accepted their had been problems.

“We didn't deserve any more than a draw. They were closer to a winning goal than us. We have seen how difficult it is to defend long balls, both here and in the home game against Stoke,” the Dutchman told Sky Sports.

“We know that is happening (Stoke's set-plays). We have had two meetings about that. We knew Peter Crouch was heading the ball to a second player, who was totally free. That was very bad. But, it was good that we kept the spirit and equalised.

“We have to play better in away matches. We have to do better.” – Reuters

News sport : NHL Three Stars: Brouwer, Stoll provide late-game heroics in wins

No. 1 Star: Troy Brouwer, Washington Capitals

As much as everyone kvetched about the rivalry the NHL was trying to sell between the Caps and the Blackhawks, it ended up being a pretty great game. Brouwer, with his dad in the stands, sent the game winner past Corey Crawford with 12.9 seconds left in a 2-2 game.

No. 2 Star: Alexander Ovechkin, Washington Capitals

Ovi was beyond pumped for this outdoor home game. When it was all said and done, he had 1 goal, 1 assist (on the game winning power play goal), 4 hits, and the title of 'rock star' bestowed upon him by Coach Trotz.

No. 3 Star: Jarret Stoll, Los Angeles Kings

In non-outdoor game news: Stoll capped off the comeback by the Kings scoring the 3-2 game winner less than a minute after LA tied it up, and with 1:14 left on the game clock.

Honorable Mention: Los Angeles trailed 2-1 until the 2:07 mark of the third period when Justin Williams tied the game (stop me if you've heard that before) ...

... The game could have been much worse. Ryan Miller faced 40 shots from the Kings and only allowed 3 goals ... Radim Vrbata skated away with 2-points for the Canucks ... Patrick Sharp scored a power play goal for Chicago and was credited with a game-high 10 shots ... Mike Green added 2 assists for a total of 16 on the season.

Did You Know? Washington's Eric Fehr is the goal scoring record holder for outdoor games with 3. He scored 2 goals in 2011 and 1 goal today.

Dishonorable Mention: Chicago was less than thrilled with the officiating in the Winter Classic ... Kris Versteeg 'could be out for a bit' after blocking a shot with his hand in the early part of the third ... Vancouver was held to only 16 shots on goal by LA despite leading nearly the entire game.

News sport : Ohio State beats Alabama in Sugar Bowl to reach playoff final

NEW ORLEANS – It's Ohio State and Oregon in the inaugural College Football Playoff National Championship game .

The Buckeyes joined the Ducks in the final with a 42-35 victory over Alabama in Thursday's Allstate Sugar Bowl.

After trailing 21-6 midway through the second quarter, Ohio State scored 36 points to Alabama's 14 as the Tide's defense couldn't stop the Buckeyes' rushing attack.

The dagger came with 3:24 remaining as Ohio State running back Ezekiel Elliott ripped off an 85-yard touchdown run to give the Buckeyes a 42-28 lead after a two-point conversion pass.

Alabama had a chance late in the game thanks to some curious playcalling by Ohio State, but quarterback Blake Sims' Hail Mary pass toward the end zone ended up in the arms of safety Tyvis Powell as time expired.

The Tide scored a touchdown to bring the game within seven points with 1:50 to go and, with two timeouts remaining, chose to onside kick. The onside kick failed, but Ohio State, sensing a chance to kill the game off, called a pass play on first down. Jones had receiver Evan Spencer in man coverage on the outside, but the pass fell incomplete, giving Alabama what essentially amounted to a free timeout.

Two running plays later, Ohio State was forced to punt with 1:39 remaining. However, Alabama's chances of getting down the field were quickly extinguished when the first two plays of its drive took 45 seconds.

Ohio State cut the Alabama lead to 21-20 right before halftime and got the ball to start the second half. On the sixth play of the drive, Jones found Devin Smith for a 47-yard touchdown and the Buckeyes' first lead since 3-0 after the first drive of the game.

Alabama created the early margin on Ohio State by capitalizing on two early Ohio State turnovers and turning them into 14 points. But Ohio State seized control of the game via Alabama's first turnover in the third quarter. Sims was looking for star receiver Amari Cooper and didn't see Ohio State defensive end Steve Miller, who stepped in front of the pass and returned it to the end zone for a 34-21 lead.

Elliott finished with 20 carries for a Sugar Bowl-record 230 yards and two touchdowns. He accounted for nearly 82 percent of Ohio State's 281 yards on the ground, a number that's more than triple what Alabama entered the game giving up.

News sport : Cactus Bowl: Washington's defense tries to quiet Oklahoma State's offense

Cactus Bowl

Washington (8-5) vs. Oklahoma State (6-6)

Tempe, Ariz.

Jan. 2, 2015

Dec 6, 2014; Norman, OK, USA; Oklahoma State Cowboys quarterback Mason Rudolph (10) looks to pass the ball against the Oklahoma Sooners during the first quarter at Gaylord Family - Oklahoma Memorial Stadium. (Mark D. Smith-USA TODAY Sports) It would be easy for Oklahoma State to just be happy to be in a bowl.

The Cowboys needed a miracle play at the end of their last game — against rival Oklahoma — to earn their sixth win and a bowl berth. Otherwise, the Cowboys would have been watching the bowl season from their couches.

There’s a reason why the Cowboys needed a last-minute play to ensure bowl eligibility, they just haven’t been very good this season.

The biggest disappointment has come at quarterback. Mason Rudolph will start the bowl game, just his third start of the season, after taking the job from Daxx Garmann, who threw 12 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

Rudolph has completed 53.3 percent of his passes for 554 yards, four touchdowns and three interceptions and somewhat ignited what had become a stagnant offense. However, he’ll be without his best weapon in running back Tyreek Hill, who was dismissed from the program after being arrested and charged with punching and choking his pregnant girlfriend Dec. 12.

That will make playing an excellent Washington defense a lot more difficult. The Huskies, who were led by All-Americans defensive tackle Danny Shelton, linebacker Hau'oli Kikaha and linebacker/running back Shaq Thompson, have 49 sacks, 27 forced turnovers and nine defensive/return touchdowns.

Offensively, the Huskies are led by quarterback Cyler Miles, who has completed 66.7 percent of his passes for 2,129 yards, 16 touchdowns and three interceptions. They’ve also excelled in the running game, especially lately as Dwayne Washington rushed for more than 100 yards in each of the last three games after becoming the fulltime starter.

Oklahoma State didn’t face a lot of good defenses in Big 12 play and the ones the Cowboys did face were able to stifle what was otherwise a pretty potent offense. Rudolph might be heading into the game with a lot of confidence, but he’ll have a tough time mounting a repeat performance against the Huskies.

ODDS: Washington (-6)

FUN FACT

PREDICTIONS

Graham: Oklahoma State is feeling good about its new quarterback, but he’s in for a wakeup call against a fairly stout Washington defense. The Cowboys haven’t fared well against good defenses and this will be more of the same. Washington 35, Oklahoma State 10.

Nick: Washington should have the advantage, though it's fair to say that Oklahoma State is a better team with Mason Rudolph at quarterback. Each team was 4-5 in its conference, and with that note, the Pac-12 is the pick. Washington 31, Oklahoma State 20.

Sam: Washington's secondary is weak but Oklahoma State's passing game isn't good enough to exploit that. The Huskies have more all-around talent. Washington 31, Oklahoma State 21.

News sport : TaxSlayer Bowl: Tennessee looks to notch first winning season since 2009

TaxSlayer Bowl

Iowa (7-5) vs. Tennessee (6-6)

Jacksonville, Fla.

Jan. 2, 2015

Nov 22, 2014; Knoxville, TN, USA; Tennessee Volunteers quarterback Joshua Dobbs (11) passes the ball against the Missouri Tigers during the second half at Neyland Stadium. Missouri won 29 to 21. (Randy Sartin-USA TODAY Sports) These two teams come into this game moving in two very different directions.

Iowa, which was picked to challenge for the Big Ten title, lost three of its final four games while Tennessee, which had the youngest roster in the nation to start the season, won three of its final four games to become bowl eligible.

That makes this contest highly unpredictable.

Neither one of these teams does anything great. Iowa had a decent running game early in the season, but that faded down the stretch. Tennessee's offense has struggled much of this season, though new quarterback Josh Dobbs has provided a little spark and running back Jalen Hurd, who has missed time because of injury, will be healthy for this contest.

So really, this contest is going to come down to motivation.

Tennessee didn’t think it would be playing in a bowl this season. This was a rebuilding year for the Vols, who had new faces on more than half of their roster. Tennessee hasn’t been to a bowl game since 2010 and hasn’t won one since 2007.

For Iowa, this is a sad consolation prize for a team that had a chance to win the Big Ten West and squandered it in the last quarter of the season. The Hawkeyes had dismal losses to Iowa State and Maryland and failed to live up to expectations in every way. Even a win in this game couldn’t erase Iowa’s 2014 underachievement.

When it all shakes out, this will probably be a high-scoring affair. Tennessee’s scoring average increased from 23.9 to 35.0 over its final four games and with the running game healthy, it figures to be clicking on all cylinders. Iowa didn’t have a lot of trouble scoring this season, just stopping its opponents.

ODDS: Tennessee (-3.5)

FUN FACT Iowa under coach Kirk Ferentz is 6-5 in bowl games and 4-2 against the SEC. However, the Hawkeyes have dropped their last two bowl appearances.

PREDICTIONS

Graham: I’m going to go with the hot team in this game even though it might not necessarily be the better one. The Vols’ offense gets rolling with its healthy running game and caps the first winning season since 2009. Tennessee 35, Iowa 24.

Nick: This could be the best test of the Big Ten and SEC. Iowa is a bizarre team while Tennessee, like Arkansas, could be considered to be better than its record indicates. The Vols are the pick here.Tennessee 27, Iowa 17.

Sam: Iowa really underperformed this year and Tennessee is billed as a program on the rise. Still, Iowa is a far more experienced team that had some tight losses to good teams down the stretch. I'll go with the Hawkeyes. Iowa 24, Tennessee 20.

News sport : Oregon players chant 'No means no' during postgame celebration (Video)

In the moments after Oregon trounced Florida State 59-20 in the College Football Playoff National Semifinal, a few Oregon players thought it would be funny to do the tomahawk chant with the phrase, “No means no” during the postgame celebration.

Unfortunately for those players, someone caught them on video and they’re no immortalized on the Internet forever.

Of course, this was a jab at Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston, who was accused of sexually assaulting a former female student. Winston was never arrested or charged and he was cleared of any wrongdoing in a student code of conduct hearing in December.

Still, Winston’s off-field issues have been a hot-button topic all season, so this kind of stuff probably happens more often than we know. Still, turning a very serious situation like rape into a postgame chant, even in jest, is pretty sleazy.

The loss snapped Florida State’s 29-game winning streak and the Internet sure had a lot of fun with the Seminoles’ misfortune.

Let’s take a look.

You know it’s bad when you have a fast food chain poking fun at you.
