News sport : Minnesota governor wants to ban 11 a.m. home kickoffs for Gophers

Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton (D) does not like 11 a.m. kickoffs and wants to use his power to do something about them.

Dayton told the St. Paul Pioneer-Press that he wants to propose legislation barring any Minnesota home game from kicking off before noon. Seriously.

"They talk about the concern about attendance at the Gopher games -- they start them at 11 o'clock in the morning," Dayton said Tuesday in an interview with the Pioneer Press. "I'm going to propose that we pass a law that no (Division I FBS) football game in Minnesota can start before noon."

He then said "If you want to tailgate, you have to be there by 9 a.m.," Dayton said. "Most students I don't think are awake at 9 a.m."

Minnesota had all four Big Ten home games start at 11 a.m. local time in 2014. Television times are usually determined two weeks prior to game time as networks make their selections based on the attractiveness of matchups.

"(When) I grew up and went to Gopher games, they started at 1 or 1:30 ... and you knew that for the whole season, so you blocked out those days," Dayton said. "Now, it's about, 'What time does TV want to put us on?' It's all driven by television and the dollars involved there."

While Dayton (67) has a point about the students, it's not an incredibly large one in the grand scheme of college football. While student attendance is a problem for some universities, it's going to take a lot of attendance struggles for it to become a widespread issue. Why? Because television dollars rule all.

Without the Big Ten's television deal with Fox, ESPN and its own network, Minnesota would have far less revenue than it currently brings in. And a ban on morning kickoffs would threaten the Gophers' standing on the television landscape.

Minnesota's final two home games were on either ESPN2 or ABC. If, on the off-chance that Dayton's proposal became reality and was passed into law, those timeslots wouldn't obviously have been available. Without those options, there's a sgnificant chance that Minnesota would end up with more games on the Big Ten Network, which doesn't have the widespread base-tier distribution that ESPN does.

And if you're of the thought that ESPN concentrates more on games it has the rights to, it pushes the Gophers away from the ESPN microscope.

Risking exposure for a football program is not worth satisfying a personal preference. And Dayton did acknowledge that his potential proposal might not get any traction, though if it does, he'd like to see if other governors with schools in the conference would be intrigued.

Our guess is that they won't be.

News sport : Malik Zaire leads Notre Dame to Music City Bowl win over LSU

Dec 30, 2014; Nashville, TN, USA; Notre Dame Fighting Irish quarterback Malik Zaire (8) passes during the second half against the LSU Tigers in the Music City Bowl at LP Field. Notre Dame won 31-28. (Christopher Hanewinckel-USA TODAY Sports) Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly made a change on offense for the Music City Bowl against LSU and it paid off.

Kelly started redshirt freshman Malik Zaire at quarterback and his ability to control the clock with a mix of run and pass helped the Fighting Irish pull out a last-second 31-28 win over the Tigers.

Zaire, in his first career start, split snaps with normal starter Everett Golson and threw for 96 yards and a touchdown while running for 96 yards and another score.

Kelly moved the pocket often and gave Zaire quick throws off three-step drops, allowing him to make quick decisions. Kelly also dialed up designed quarterback runs in bunches.

Zaire only averaged 4.4 yards per carry, but those runs allowed the Irish to eat up clock, easily win the battle for time of possession (37:00 to 23:00) and run 25 more offensive plays than the Tigers. Then, when the Irish were in more obvious passing downs, Kelly put Golson (6-of-11, 90 yards) in the game to pick up his freshman teammate. The formula worked well as the Irish racked up 449 total yards.

LSU – especially freshman running back Leonard Fournette – didn’t make things easy for the Irish. After Zaire hit William Fuller for a 12-yard touchdown on the Irish’s first drive of the game, Fournette capped off an eight-play, 76-yard LSU drive with an eight-yard touchdown run.

Golson came in for Notre Dame next drive and drove the Irish into the red zone. Kelly then substituted Zaire back into the ballgame and the freshman scored on a seven-yard touchdown run.

On the ensuing kickoff, Fournette showed why he was considered to be one of the top freshmen coming into this season. The 230-pounder showed off his impressive speed on a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, tying the game at 14-14 early in the second quarter.

The back and forth play continued on Notre Dame’s next drive as running back Tarean Folston scored from six yards out to cap off another lengthy drive.

Down 21-14, LSU’s next drive culminated with a bit of controversy. Methodically, the Tigers worked their way down the field, hoping to tie things up going into the half. Instead, after 14 plays and 73 yards, the Tigers appeared to be settling for a 19-yard field goal on 4th-and-goal from the two-yard line.

But as he is known to do, LSU coach Les Miles called for a fake and holder Brad Kragthorpe was ruled to have been tackled just shy of the goal line. It appeared that the ball crossed the plane before Kragthorpe's knee hit the ground, but the call stood after a review.

The Tigers didn’t allow the controversial call to impact them when the second half began. On the first play of the third quarter, Anthony Jennings hit John Diarse for a 75-yard touchdown to tie the game 21-21.

The game remained tied until Fournette broke off another explosive play – an 89-yard touchdown run – to give LSU a 28-21 lead. That lead didn’t last long. Notre Dame’s C.J. Prosise reeled off a 50-yard run a few minutes later and the game was again tied.

Defenses on both sides tightened until the Irish regained possession at their own 15 with 5:41 to go. Kelly again efficiently mixed Zaire runs with Golson passes and the Irish progressed slowly down the field until they reached the LSU 14-yard line. That set up a game-winning Kyle Brindza 32-yard field goal as time expired.

The game could be looked at as a sign of things to come for each team next season. Zaire showed that he has the capabilities to be the starter moving forward, despite Golson having another year of eligibility. For LSU, it showcased Fournette’s incredible potential while showing that the team’s passing game still has a long, long way to go.

Both teams finished with an 8-5 record.

News sport : 2014 Driver Reviews: No. 15 Kasey Kahne

After doing exit interviews for Sprint Cup Series drivers in 2013, we're turning the tables. We want the drivers to sell themselves. So here are the resumés for all full-time Sprint Cup Series drivers in 2014. Then, at the end, we'll provide a summation of the driver's season in 150 words or less.

Name: Kasey Kahne

NASCAR Experience: 11 years in the Cup Series and 17 wins. 11 years!

Most recent team: Hendrick Motorsports

Most recent season finish: 15th

2014 accomplishments: A win at Atlanta, a third at Kansas and a fifth at Michigan.

Most memorable moment: Winning at Atlanta counts, right? Or do you want transparency? Because Jeff Gordon's Brickyard restart would count.

Strengths: Has won at every type of track in the Cup Series outside of Daytona and Talladega.

2015 goals: Not be the fourth car at Hendrick Motorsports and the seventh car out of eight overall in the Hendrick/Stewart-Haas organization.

FTM's Take: Kahne's entry is pretty short this year because it was a very nondescript season, especially when it came to his three other Hendrick teammates. He made the Chase via the Atlanta win, but if he hadn't won there, there would have been no complaints about Kahne potentially missing the Chase. Three top fives and seven top 10s aren't exactly world-beating statistics.

Will the return of Keith Rodden help in 2015? Rodden spent the season as Jamie McMurray's crew chief after being an engineer on Kahne's team. He's now going to be Kahne's crew chief. If Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon hold on to the form they displayed in 2014, Kahne is going to have to make a massive leap to me in their stratosphere next season.

Previous reviews: No. 16 Aric Almirola, No. 17 Kyle Larson, No. 18, Jamie McMurray, No. 19 Clint Bowyer, No. 20, Austin Dillon, No. 21 Paul Menard, No. 22 Brian Vickers, No. 23 Marcos Ambrose, No. 24 Martin Truex Jr., No. 25 Tony Stewart, No. 26 Casey Mears, No. 27 Ricky Stenhouse Jr., No. 28, Danica Patrick, No. 29, Justin Allgaier, No. 30, David Gilliland, No. 31 Cole Whitt, No. 32 David Ragan, No. 33 Michael Annett, No. 34 Reed Sorenson, No. 35 Alex Bowman

News sport : Iowa earns dose of encouragement while Ohio State sputters at start again

It's probably a little much to consider Iowa a Big Ten title contender based off one impressive 71-65 road win at No. 20 Ohio State to open conference play Tuesday, but the outcome is certainly an indication the Hawkeyes are dangerous no matter the venue.

Senior Aaron White, playing back in his home state possibly for the final time in his career, scored 18 points with nine rebounds and junior forward Jarrod Uthoff added 18 of his own to hand Buckeyes coach Thad Matta the first home loss to open Big Ten play in his career at Ohio State.

It has been tough to get a good read on this Iowa team this season. The Hawkeyes have battled and lost against the likes of Texas and Syracuse in the early going. They earned an impressive win on the road at North Carolina only to be swept by in-state foes Iowa State and Northern Iowa. And now they have bounced back to earn a second road win over a ranked opponent.

Maybe resilience will become the Hawkeyes' mantra as they battle over the next 21/2 months to become the first Iowa team to earn an NCAA tournament win since 2001. Obviously that is a long way off, but a strong performance against the Buckeyes is a sign of what this team might be capable of if it can find some consistency.

Ohio State was in danger of being blown out on its home court for a time early in the second half before it eventually clawed back and cut the Iowa lead to three. It's no surprise the Buckeyes made a run considering they have the best home record in college basketball since the start of the 2009-2010 season at 99-9.Still, the fact that Ohio State continues to fall behind by double-digits in the first half this season - it also happened against Louisville and North Carolina - has to be troubling Matta.

White and his teammates made 46 percent of their shots and outrebounded OSU to give themselves a nice start to the grind that is coming in what has been the toughest conference in the nation, based on RPI, in recent years.

News sport : LSU appears to score on fake FG, refs say otherwise (Video)

LSU coach Les Miles dialed up a fake field goal at the end of the first half of the Music City Bowl. It did not turn out like he hoped.

The Tigers were lined up for a chip shot field goal that could have cut Notre Dame’s lead to 21-17. Instead Miles called a fake for holder Brad Kragthorpe, a backup quarterback, who lunged toward the goal line. The ball appeared to break the plane of the goal line, but he was ruled short on the field.

After the play was reviewed, the play was surprisingly upheld.

The one angle, shown in the photo above, shows the nose of the football across the goal line.

Here’s another look.

Apparently there wasn’t another camera angle that could corroborate whether or not Kragthorpe’s knee was down. Therefore, the call was upheld and the Fighting Irish went into halftime with a 21-14 instead of what could have been a tie game.

It remains to be seen if the call will have an impact on the outcome of the game.

Germans deserved world champions

Germany became the first European team to win the World Cup on American soil.

|||

London - It had been 18 years since Germany last won an international title and the pressure on the football powerhouse to finally deliver on promises was immense at the World Cup in Brazil.

The Germans could not have scripted a better scenario for their fourth World Cup victory in July, soaking up setbacks and injury bad luck along the way to crown a decade of unsuccessful attempts with the most important silverware of all.

Semi-finalists at the 2006 and 2010 World Cups, runners-up at Euro 2008 and in the last four again at Euro 2012, the Germans had long been knocking on the door of success.

But for different reasons, it always eluded them with critics saying coach Joachim Loew's team was brimming with talent but lacked the character to take that last decisive step.

They also lacked, some said, a strong personality on the pitch, a natural leader in the mould of Franz Beckenbauer, Lothar Matthaeus or Michael Ballack.

A day before leaving for Brazil, Germany suffered another blow with in-form winger Marco Reus being ruled out with an injury in their last warmup game.

Instead of choking again, Germany rose to the occasion in style, becoming the first European team to win the World Cup on American soil.

The Germans got off to a superb start, firing four goals past Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal but their campaign then started to stutter.

A 2-2 draw against Ghana was followed by a nervous 1-0 win over the United States as they advanced to the knockout stage.

Right back Philipp Lahm had started the first four games in a new holding midfield position but the captain had failed to impress as he had done for about a decade in his defensive role.

Only late in their 2-1 extra-time win over Algeria in the last 16 did Loew what most Germans had been demanding since the start of the tournament, switching Lahm back to the fullback position.

The Germans were transformed instantly into the team who had won over scores of fans in the past years: the quick, attacking team who ripped apart Argentina and England in the previous tournament, firing four goals past each of them.

The Germans were never really troubled by France in their 1-0 quarter-final win, setting the stage for a mouth-watering semi-final with hosts and five-time winners Brazil.

The game on July 8 in Belo Horizonte's Mineirao stadium will long remain in the collective memory of football fans over the world as Germany tore up the record books with a 7-1 annihilation of the hosts.

With four goals in six minutes and a 5-0 lead after only 29, the Germans played the perfect game as Miroslav Klose also edged past former Brazil striker Ronaldo to become the World Cup's all-time top scorer with 16 goals.

Mario Goetze's extra-time winner in their 1-0 final victory against Lionel Messi's Argentina seemed merely to be the logical consequence of the events that preceded the final in the Rio de Janeiro's Maracana.

The Germans never lost focus of their goal even when Sami Khedira was ruled out moments before the start of the final with a warmup injury and when his replacement Christoph Kramer was taken off after only half an hour with a hit to the head.

Impressive depth in their hugely talented squad and their unwavering team spirit carried them to the deserved title.

The Germans returned home to a heroes' welcome, with more than half a million fans pouring onto the Berlin streets, their title thirst finally quenched. – Reuters

News sport : Orange Bowl: Top rushing offense square off in a NY6 bowl no one expected

Orange Bowl

Mississippi State (10-2) vs. Georgia Tech (10-3)

Miami

Dec 31, 2014

Few people could have predicted this unlikely matchup as one of the marquee bowl games of the season, but Mississippi State and Georgia Tech have been two of the hottest teams this season.

The Bulldogs spent a good chunk of the year ranked No. 1 before falling to Alabama and then Ole Miss in two of their final three games of the season. The Yellow Jackets won five consecutive games to end the season and got a timely loss by Duke to secure the ACC Coastal Division title and nearly upset Florida State in the ACC Championship game.

If you like running offenses, this game is for you. Georgia Tech ranks second in the country in rushing behind a triple-option offense led by quarterback Justin Thomas. Thomas leads the team in both passing and rushing, but the Yellow Jackets have gotten timely rushing help by running backs Zach Laskey and Synjyn Davis, who have been bruisers up the middle and at the goal line.

Similarly, Mississippi State quarterback Dak Prescott, who was the favorite to win the Heisman Trophy before the Bulldogs struggles in November, leads the team with 2,996 passing yards and 24 touchdowns, but also has been a consistent rushing threat with 939 yards and 13 scores. Prescott has been a nice ground complement to Josh Robinson, who has had a breakout year with 1,128 yards and 11 touchdowns.

It’s Mississippi State’s offensive diversity, and the fact that it’s tied for 14th nationally in scoring, that's going to make stopping the Bulldogs such a task for the Georgia Tech defense.

During its winning streak, Georgia Tech’s defense was opportunistic, turning turnovers into points and then allowing the offense to whittle down the clock with the ground game. However, they weren’t able to force a turnover against a turnover-prone Florida State team and that contributed to the loss.

Prescott has been hit and miss with ball security. He struggled in the middle of the season and against Alabama, but toward the end of the year was better at limiting turnovers. If the Yellow Jackets want to have any hope in this game, they have to force mistakes by the Bulldogs’ offense.

Not to be overshadowed, the Mississippi State defense is quite good in its own right. It allows just 126.5 yards per game on the ground, and with nearly a month to prepare for the triple option, should be able to limit the Yellow Jackets’ ground effectiveness and force Thomas to have to beat the Bulldogs with his arm.

If the game comes down to Thomas’ ability to pass the Yellow Jackets to a win, Mississippi State should be triumphant.

Vegas odds: Mississippi State (-7)

FUN FACT Both Mississippi State and Georgia Tech were picked to finish near the bottom of their respective conference divisions. The Bulldogs were picked to finish fifth in the SEC West while the Yellow Jackets were picked to finish fifth in the ACC Coastal Division.

PREDICTIONS

Graham: Let’s not forget this is a Mississippi State team that was No. 1 in the country for a good chunk of the year before it lost to the new No. 1 and its rival. Georgia Tech might make this a game early, but I think Prescott and Robinson run that Yellow Jacket defense into the ground. Mississippi State 42, Georgia Tech 17.

Nick: Don't play a drinking game with every time you hear the word "option" during the broadcast. Even if you were simply using water, you're going to be overhydrated. Mississippi State 30, Georgia Tech 23.

Sam: Georgia Tech's triple option is a tricky task for any defense, but Mississippi State has the speed and discipline to handle it over the course of 60 minutes. The Bulldogs will get a few key stops in the second half, allowing Dak Prescott and the offense to pull away. Mississippi State 33, Georgia Tech 27.

News sport : Pittsburgh Steelers, in need of Le'Veon Bell insurance, sign Ben Tate

Ben Tate has had a really weird 2014.

The former first-round pick will be on his fourth team in the last calendar year, as he signed with the playoff-bound Pittsburgh Steelers right before they play the Baltimore Ravens. Starting tailback Le'Veon Bell, one of the NFL's top backs, is battling a knee injury. The Steelers don't have much depth behind him, and if Bell can't go or is limited, they need someone to play.

Enter Tate, a once-promising back who is bouncing around the league like a ping-pong ball.

The former Houston Texans running back started the offseason as one of the top running backs in free agency, but the market for backs has plummeted. So he settled for a two-year contract worth a little more than $6.5 million. Outplayed by rookies Terrance West and Isaiah Crowell, the Browns cut Tate. He went to the Minnesota Vikings, got just 13 carries for 38 yards in three games there, and was cut again. He has 371 yards and a 3.1-yard average for the season.

So at least when the Steelers had some concern about Bell, there was some veteran on the market for them to grab. The Steelers hope that Tate never sees the field in the playoffs, but that will depend on Bell.

Bell was hit low by Bengals safety Reggie Nelson and hyperextended his right knee. Steelers coach Mike Tomlin told the Pittsburgh media that Bell rode a stationary bike on Wednesday, and the team will "leave the light on for him" to play. Bell has one fewer day than usual because the Steelers play on Saturday night.

The Steelers will be hoping Bell plays, but Tate will be insurance if he can't. And once the postseason is over, Tate can start looking for yet another team.

News sport : Peach Bowl: Can Ole Miss' defense contain a high-powered TCU offense?

Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl

Ole Miss (9-3) vs. TCU (11-1)

Atlanta, Ga.

Dec. 31, 2014

Oct 25, 2014; Baton Rouge, LA, USA; Mississippi Rebels defensive back Cody Prewitt (25) is congratulated by teammate Senquez Golson (21) after recovering a fumble by the LSU Tigers in the first quarter at Tiger Stadium. (Crystal LoGiudice-USA TODAY Sports) Ole Miss and TCU weren’t really on the College Football Playoff radar when the season began. And yet here they are, squaring off in the first of six CFP bowl games – the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl.

Ole Miss took a big step forward in year three under Hugh Freeze, finishing the regular season ranked No. 9 following an Egg Bowl win over rival Mississippi State. The Rebels’ 7-0 start included a huge win over Alabama that propelled them as high as No. 3 in the country. The season took a turn with back-to-back losses to LSU and Auburn and a shutout at the hands of Arkansas, but Freeze’s team rebounded and essentially knocked Mississippi State out of the College Football Playoff.

The Rebels’ offense was hot to start the season, but became inconsistent down the stretch, especially after star receiver LaQuon Treadwell went down with an injury in a 35-31 loss to Auburn. With Treadwell out, senior quarterback Bo Wallace threw four interceptions and only two touchdowns in the Rebels’ final three games. Overall, Wallace passed for 3,085 yards, 22 touchdowns and 11 interceptions on the season while also running for five scores.

On the other side of the ball, Ole Miss boasts the top scoring defense in the country that gave up only 13.8 points per game. The Rebels’ D faces a huge challenge against a TCU offense that put up 46.8 points and 332.8 yards per game en route to a 11-1 campaign and narrowly missing out on a playoff spot.

Junior Trevone Boykin transitioned to being a full-time quarterback and thrived. The speedy Boykin threw for 3,714 yards and 30 touchdowns while also running for 642 yards and eight additional scores. After B.J. Catalon was injured, Aaron Green stepped in admirably at running back and finished the regular season with 854 yards and eight touchdowns on just 111 carries (7.7 ypc). Josh Doctson was Boykin’s favorite target and can surpass the 1,000-yard plateau with 42 receiving yards against the Rebels. Kolby Listenbee (38 catches, 709 yards, 3 TDs), Deante’ Gray (34/564/8) and David Porter (36/377/3) also saw plenty of looks from Boykin this season.

The key matchup will be TCU’s deep receiving group against a stout Ole Miss secondary. Senior cornerback Senquez Golson was a consensus first-team All-America selection with nine interceptions while fellow corner Mike Hilton had three picks and led the team with 66 tackles. At safety, Cody Prewitt also earned his share of All-American honors.

They’ll need to turn in another big performance in order to contain TCU’s offense.

ODDS

Ole Miss (-3.5)

FUN FACT

In the first year with Sonny Cumbie and Doug Meacham’s air raid offense, TCU set single-season records for points, passing yards and total offense. The Horned Frogs scored 301 points in 12 games in 2013 (25.1 ppg). Coming into the Peach Bowl, the Horned Frogs have scored 562 points (46.8 ppg).

PREDICTIONS

Graham: TCU was left out of the College Football Playoff — through no fault of its own — but it still has a chance to show it's one of the nation's best programs and that it deserves to be among the elite. If TCU's offense gets clicking early, Ole Miss won't have the firepower to keep up. TCU 34, Ole Miss 21.

Nick: Ole Miss' defense is well-equipped to contain TCU's offense. But TCU's defense should win the matchup with Ole Miss' offense. Will Bo Wallace re-live the nightmare that was his first half in the season-opener at the Georgia Dome? TCU 24, Ole Miss 20.

Sam: TCU definitely feels disrespected after being left out of the College Football Playoff and the Horned Frogs will have a great chance to showcase that they are one of the four best teams in the country against a tough Ole Miss defense. TCU pulls away in the fourth quarter and wins. TCU 38, Ole Miss 24.

News sport : 'Redskins' mentions declined 27 percent on NFL broadcasts this year

The Washington Redskins' name came under its sharpest assault in team history in 2014, with organizations mobilizing to condemn it as a slur. While a majority of Americans continue to believe the name should remain, broadcasters used the Redskins name 27 percent fewer times in 2014 than in 2013.

NFL announcers said "Redskins" 472 fewer times in 2014 than in 2013, according to a Deadspin analysis. The team's name was mentioned an average of 115 times per week, with the low point coming this past weekend against Dallas. Fox's team of Kevin Burkhart and John Lynch mentioned the word "Redskins" only 13 times the entire game.

Many broadcasters and media members have ceased using the name altogether, and always draw heat from Redskins fans when announcing their intentions publicly. Deadspin's stats seem to suggest that even those broadcasters who don't necessarily make their intentions known publicly are taking a quiet stand against the Redskins name.

It’s LeBron James’ birthday! Look who’s 30!

Now look at all of us media buzzards diving in to bloviate as to whether or not LeBron James is long for Cleveland. Again. Let’s party like it’s 2009.

We spent ages talking up and down the Cleveland Cavaliers’ various woes and prominent potential, even with a lacking roster, on Monday. This team can still win a championship. This team can still vault to the top of both the Eastern Conference and the offensive efficiency rankings – perches the Toronto Raptors both currently ably occupy. LeBron James can still be the guy that hounds Kyle Lowry, Jimmy Butler, Kawhi Leonard, Stephen Curry or Kevin Durant in the final stages of a deciding playoff game, while still dropping 33-9-9 on the other end.

The problem so far is that the Cavs have dropped 12 of 30 to start the season, not terrible, but not ideal. They’ve also fallen into the lower third of the league in terms of defensive rating. As a result, we’re all chirping, and one Cleveland beat writer, Chris Haynes from the Cleveland Plain Dealer, even offered this on Tuesday morning:

James, who turns 30 today, has no intention of compromising his prime years playing for a sputtering organization. He can opt out of his contract at the end of the season and become a free agent.

Given the massive scrutiny he would endure if he departed Cleveland a second time, if his hand is forced, I'm told he won't hesitate to make the appropriate business decision if it means bolting.

(LeBron James, in anticipation of a giant uptick in terms of what a maximum-salaried player can make, intelligently decided to sign a two-year deal with Cleveland last summer with an opt out clause after the initial season. NBA salary rules encourage such a move; rules that are similar to the ones that also encourage Kevin Love not to sign an extension with the Cavs during the season.)

Now, this is anonymously-sourced, we don’t know how many people are doing the telling here, or even if the telling in question was from more than one person. Chris Haynes is on his first year on the Cleveland beat, which is why many in the blogosphere are scoffing at the report, but it is important to note that Haynes did fantastic work in several seasons while covering the Portland Trail Blazers.

The reason for the season, here, is James’ either tepid or spot-on reaction to questions about rookie coach David Blatt’s work so far this season from Monday:

James was asked after practice Monday if he felt Blatt was the right coach for the team, and he said: "Yeah, he's our coach, I mean, what other coach do we have?"

OK, so, there’s that, but there’s also this:

"I'm happy who we have at our helm," James said. "He's our coach. For it to make a feud between me and Blatt or the team and Blatt, it's just to sell. To sell and get people to read it and put something at the bottom of the ticker. That's all it is. It's funny, you could write those same things when we win, too. It's just write it when we lose because it looks better."

And this:

"I think my relationship with the coach continues to get better and better every day," James said, one day after the Cavaliers lost by 23 at home to the Pistons, one of the NBA's worst teams this season. "It's just two months of us being together. I don't know him fully, he doesn't know me fully, he doesn't know any of the guys fully, and that's to be expected. It's our first year together. But he has our attention."

Pick out what you want, deduce what you need, but also listen to LeBron James when he tells you that all of this nonsense (including the post you’re reading right now) is little more than fish and chip paper.

David Blatt is, currently, not coaching to his full potential. His various pro and international tournament teams featured fully flowing offenses that were gorgeous to watch, teams built around movement and the pass that led to the pass that led to the pass that led to the score. Blatt has taken a penny-wise and pound-foolish approach thus far with the Cavs, working in very orthodox ways with basic screen and roll offenses designed to make sure James, Kyrie Irving, and to a far lesser extent (in ways that aren’t his fault) Kevin Love get easy and productive initial returns.

What’s probably most telling about Blatt’s initial turn with Cleveland is that I genuinely started to write “penny-wise and pound-foolish approach with the Heat” in the prior paragraph.

James’ Cavs cannot be directly compared with the 2010-11 Miami Heat, as we wrote about yesterday. By this time in that season those Heat were a far better team that this Cleveland outfit, and while they didn’t top the Eastern Conference standings that year, the Heat did rank in the top five offensively and defensively when 82 games is said and done. Still, the parallels between Blatt and Erik Spoelstra are there. Coach Spo had two seasons under his belt prior to LeBron taking his talents to Florida (we’re not writing that again) but his offenses both with James in 2010-11 and without him in the previous two years were pedestrian and easy to guard. He eventually got better.

Blatt has already been better, just not at this level and with these sorts of players. It will take time; and while the Cavs will never be a good team defensively with that roster, they can turn into an incredibly-good offensive unit if both Blatt and his players decide to take the long view of things. That will have to be the focus, because with this personnel the defense is not going to get much better. Defense is the problem, but there is not a knockout solution for this season.

There are no killer coaches out there, waiting to take over. Every sideline stalker would absolutely kill for a chance to coach LeBron, Love, and Kyrie Irving, but even the best of candidates isn’t going to solve anything. George Karl is not going to be able to patrol the paint for the Cavaliers. Michael Malone is not going to be able to close out on shooters. Your favorite Highly Regarded Assistant is not going to be able to peel about 10,000 career minutes off of LeBron’s legs in order for him to start playing devastating two-way ball against the Pistons in December.

“What other coach do we have?” may come off as tepid, but it’s also the absolute right thing to say. Nobody else is coming in that would make a major difference, so both the Cavs and Blatt are going to have to figure this out together.

LeBron James will opt out of his contract this summer in order to both make as much money as he can under NBA salary bylaws, and assess his career prospects. That’s his right. Whether or not you believe he’s making any sort of concrete decision 30 games into an 82-game season is entirely up to you.

Simeone causing a stir in Spain

La Liga champions Atletico Madrid have become the mirror image of Diego Simeone as a well-organised and hard-working team.

|||

London - La Liga champions Atletico Madrid have become the mirror image of Diego Simeone as a well-organised and hard-working team with a fierce commitment and a strong rebellious streak.

Prowling the touchline clad all in black with his hair slicked back, Simeone has cultivated a kind of gangster look as he successfully unsettles Real Madrid and Barcelona, the football establishment in Spain.

The combative Argentine refused to accept publicly that Atletico, with far inferior resources, would be able to compete with the big two but with huge effort and a never say die attitude he proved he was up for the challenge.

Atletico were the most consistent of the three teams fighting for the La Liga title last season, basing their play on a rock-solid defence and wearing down their opponents.

Diego Godin's header at Barcelona in May on the final day of the 2013-14 campaign, which earned Atletico the draw they needed to win their first La Liga crown in almost two decades, was yet another goal from a set play and typified the emphasis Simeone puts on strategy.

After wrapping up the Spanish title, they came within a whisker of beating Real Madrid in the Champions League final, leading 1-0 until Sergio Ramos equalised with seconds remaining and eventually falling 4-1 after extra time.

Atletico are currently third in La Liga and through to the last 16 of the Champions League, suggesting Simeone has been able to cope successfully with the exit of leading players like top scorer Diego Costa and defender Filipe Luis, both sold to Chelsea.

Simeone is constantly looking ahead during matches, second-guessing the opposition and ready to switch tactics.

Atletico's team includes many players who had never experienced success until the arrival of the man said to play with a knife between his teeth, who instilled his winning mentality and a “match by match” philosophy.

He took over at the end of 2011 with the team struggling and made an immediate impact as they finished in fifth place before beating Athletic Bilbao to win the Europa League.

Atletico showed by beating Chelsea in the European Super Cup that they were ready to challenge the continent's elite.

In a further sign of what was to come, they won the 2013 King's Cup after stunning Real 2-1 in the final in Real's own Bernabeu arena.

“We are showing that with work you can compete,” Simeone said.

“There are a lot of fans of Madrid and Barcelona that congratulate me for what we are doing and that makes me proud,” added the 44-year-old.

“Fans of all the teams in Spain can identify and feel a small part of this Atletico Madrid.”

Simeone showed the same fighting spirit as a player with Atletico, helping them win the domestic Spanish league and cup double in 1996.

He was a fans favourite for his attitude which he puts down to his upbringing and battling through the youth system at his first club Velez Sarsfield.

He was born in the Palermo district of Buenos Aires and began playing football on the street, but he did not have a disadvantaged childhood with his mother a hairdresser and his father a salesman.

Simeone says it is from his parents that he learned to work hard and he was also influenced by the routine at Sarsfield.

“There they taught me values, wash your clothes, respect, order, everything that helps you in life. From order you start living better,” he said. – Reuters

News sport : Fiesta Bowl: Arizona and Boise State each make a third Fiesta appearance

Vizio Fiesta Bowl

Boise State (11-2) vs. Arizona (10-3)

Glendale, Ariz.

Dec. 31, 2014

Boise State is back in a familiar spot while Arizona should have a distinct advantage in Wednesday's Fiesta Bowl.

Plus, both teams have something to prove.

In the BCS era, Boise State went to two BCS Bowls and both were the Fiesta Bowl. The first, a win over Oklahoma after the 2006 season, is a game that you very likely remember.

The second was a 17-10 win over TCU after the 2009 season.

The Broncos made the Fiesta Bowl as the highest-ranked team in the College Football Playoff rankings outside of a Power Five conference. While Boise State isn't seen as nearly the underdog that it was in 2007, Wednesday's game is a chance for the Broncos to show that they were the appropriate choice by the selection committee after Marshall's win in the Boca Raton Bowl to cap a 12-1 season.

It's also Arizona's third trip to the Fiesta Bowl, though it's been a long time between trips No. 2 and No. 3. The Wildcats last made the Fiesta Bowl after the 1993 season, beating Miami in 29-0.

For the Wildcats, the game is a chance to erase the memories of what happened in December. In the Pac-12 title game against Oregon, a team Arizona beat on the road earlier in the season, the Ducks rolled 51-13.

Looking for a gambling angle on the game? The over (67.5) might be a good bet. Boise State averages nearly 40 points per game while Arizona is at almost 35. Plus, both teams are outside the top 60 in scoring defense.

Vegas odds: Arizona (-3)

FUN FACT

Boise State's win in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl came in now-Washington coach Chris Petersen's first season with the school. Bryan Harsin, a former Boise State quarterback who was on the team for the Broncos' first-ever FBS bowl win in 1999, is in his first year as BSU coach.

PREDICTIONS

Graham: Arizona had a dismal showing in the Pac-12 title game, but I have a hard time seeing that happen again. If quarterback Anu Solomon is healthy and the defense can limit the production of Boise State RB Jay Ajayi, the Wildcats will prevail in a close one. Arizona 35, Boise State 31.

Nick: As Grant Hedrick goes, Boise State goes. Hedrick threw four interceptions in each of Boise State's two losses in 2014. He has five interceptions in the Broncos' 11 wins. While this isn't a claim for four-pick game No. 3, Arizona is the pick here. Arizona 34, Boise State 27

Sam: Boise will put up a good fight for its Group of Five brethren, but Arizona is just the better, more explosive team. The Wildcats want to get the bad taste out of their mouths from the Pac-12 title game debacle. Arizona 34, Boise State 24.
